GET TO KNOW GARY GINSTLING In 2013, Gary Ginstling joins the ISO as CEO, bringing a combination of senior-level orchestra leadership, artistic planning, earned income generation and fundraising, strategic planning and communications experience to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. As the General Manager of The Cleveland Orchestra since 2008, Ginstling has led the orchestra’s artistic planning, as well as orchestra operations, educational and community initiatives, electronic media projects and The Cleveland Orchestra’s extensive national and international touring programs. Prior to his work in Cleveland, Ginstling served as the Director of Communications and External Affairs for the San Francisco Symphony (2006-2008), where he oversaw the national public relations campaign to launch the Keeping Score television project, and as Executive Director for the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra (2003-2006), where he delivered three years of balanced budgets and reduced the symphony’s debt by 60 percent.
A native of New Jersey, Ginstling earned a MBA at the Anderson School of Business at UCLA. A clarinetist, Ginstling earned a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School and a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Yale University. He has performed with the San Francisco Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic and served for 12 seasons as Principal Clarinet for the New West Symphony in Ventura County, California. He and his wife, Marta, have two children.
ISO Director of Communications Jessica Di Santo caught up with Gary Ginstling and asked him a few questions about the Orchestra, his love for music and moving to Indianapolis. What appealed most to you about working with the ISO? The people. I really enjoyed getting to meet the Musicians, Krzysztof, Jack, the members of the board, the staff and people in the community. Everyone I met was so enthusiastic about this institution that I knew right away I wanted to be a part of it. Plus, the diversity of the ISO’s programming means there is something that will appeal to just about everyone. When did your love of symphonic music begin and what attracted you to a career in it? My parents began taking me to concerts at an early age, and I will never forget the first time I heard a live orchestra. To me, there is simply nothing that compares to hearing a symphony orchestra live; and one of my goals is to make sure more people have a chance to have that same kind of experience which I had when I was younger. What excites you about moving your family to Indianapolis? Again, it comes back to the people. Everyone I’ve met has been so friendly and welcoming, and I can’t wait for my family to get to know the area. And we’ve already gotten my kids Colts and Pacers gear! What do you see for the future of the ISO? Playing more great concerts for more people than ever before.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH INSPIRING MUSICAL EXPERIENCES TO MEET COMMUNITY NEEDS. The Sallie Mae Fund Young People’s Discovery Concerts
The Art of Leadership
Designed to introduce grade school children to musical concerts and the ISO, Discovery Concerts are one-hour educational concerts that attract over 20,000 students to the Hilbert Circle Theatre annually. In additional to attending the performances, teachers are supplied with learning resources prior to the event so they can prepare their classes for what they will see and hear.
The ISO hosts an interactive, professional development program using music-making as a metaphor to explore universal leadership issues.
.....................................................................................
The ISO’s MYO is a youth and family development program designed to use the life skills learned in music instruction to engage youth in activities that discourage at risk behaviors and keep them committed to staying in school.
Side-by-Side Through coaching opportunities and an annual free performance, Side-by-Side allows talented high school students to share the stage with their professional counterparts from the ISO. Sponsored by Fifth Third Private Bank.

Symphony in Color More than 35,000 elementary school children throughout Indiana participate in Symphony in Color, an enrichment program offering a unique blend of two disciplines: symphonic music and visual art. Sponsored by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana and McDonalds of Central Indiana, the program culminates in a juried exhibition at the Hilbert Circle Theatre and the Indiana State Museum.

Outstanding Orchestra, Creative Concerts The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s talented musicians, renowned conductors and innovative programming attract top talent, so that central Indiana audiences can enjoy world-class musical experiences week after week. However, subscription and single-ticket prices cover only a third of the costs to put on these concerts. That’s why your help is critical. With your generous donations, the ISO can continue making quality concert experiences from our exceptional musicians for years to come.
Community Engagement Did you know that the ISO and its youth and family development program, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, provide many concerts throughout the year that are free and open to the public? Or that the ISO founded an interactive, professional development program used by a variety of organizations that uses music-making as a metaphor to explore the art of leadership? The ISO strives to allow everyone to experience the thrill of making music, be it in a classroom, at a concert or even in the least likely of places. The cost of keeping our ticket prices affordable to the community we serve is covered by contributions from individuals like you. Your support is vital to maintaining a world-class orchestra in our community and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy it.
