NEW OLYMPIC RECORD | Men's 1500m | 3:27.65

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” - Isaiah 43:18-19

2025. 2025. Twenty Twenty-Five. There, I have said it thrice. Yet it still sounds strange, new, and not entirely comfortable. But here we are—already in the year's final quarter, or 25% of the way through the 21st century. Wow!

At Cathedral, our school calendar sets a unique rhythm. When January arrives, we're only halfway through our academic year, saying hello to the new and goodbye to the old at the same time. And true to form, we pack so much into each school day—both in and out of the classroom—that we relish our breaks almost as much as we look forward to returning to the Hill.

This upcoming semester will be no different. January 2025 brings our fourth J-Term, with National Catholic Schools Week and National School Choice Week rounding out the month. As this publication goes to print, we are planning the dedication of our grotto. We are forever grateful to the Ryan Hasbrook '92 family for making this beautiful project possible. Lighting a small votive candle in this sacred new space is sure to become a cherished tradition here on the Hill.

February brings our annual ShamrAuction—a beloved tradition spanning over four decades—where we gather to celebrate and support our incredible Irish family. While we honor this long-standing event, those of us leading Cathedral High School also have the privilege of looking forward, planning for the future in innovative and vibrant ways.

In the spring, we look forward to the St. Patrick's Day Parade, Easter, the Irish 500, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. We've changed things a bit this year, so please note that Baccalaureate for the Class of 2025 will be on Sunday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the Welch Activity Center. Commencement will be on Monday, May 19, at the Fishers Event Center. Graduation will begin at 6:30 p.m. We look forward to celebrating the awesome Class of 2025!

Fostering a spirit of collaboration—of which I am a huge fan—our leadership teams are actively working

together to develop our new Strategic Plan. Focusing on our Student Experience, we've distilled several brainstorming sessions into three key themes: Experiential Learning (J-Term, Service, Internships, etc.), Technology Integration, and Faith and Wholeness. These broad themes will soon take shape as practical initiatives designed to continually enrich our students' journey, transforming and preparing them to make the world a better place. We are truly energized and inspired as we collaborate with our Board of Directors to set Cathedral on a path that will continue to distinguish us as a premier Catholic Holy Cross high school.

Sometimes, we look back to move forward. The vision of Holy Cross founder Basil Moreau and Cathedral's own founders continues to give us the words and hope we need to face the future.

2025 and beyond, here we come! And with Our Lady leading us, we are confident that we shall not tire!

Our Lady of the Hill, pray for us!

Gratefully yours,

Cole Hocker '19

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ADVANCEMENT

Dear Cathedral Family,

As we reflect on the remarkable stories in this issue of Highlights, we are reminded of the profound impact of our Holy Cross Core Values, which guide and unite us in our shared mission of faith and education. Our mission calls us to transform the hearts and minds of a diverse group of students, empowering them with the competence to see and the courage to act. This mission, rooted in our vision to be the Catholic high school of the future, drives everything we do—both in the classroom and in our broader community.

This year, as the Catholic Church celebrates its Jubilee Year, we are reminded of its profound call to renewal and grace. A Jubilee Year inspires us to deepen our faith, embrace forgiveness, and commit ourselves to acts of service and love. At Cathedral, this celebration resonates as we strive to live out the Gospel message in every aspect of our mission.

The dedication of our grotto this year serves as a tangible reminder of God’s love and presence on our campus. It offers the Cathedral community a sacred space for reflection and prayer, reminding us of the power of divine providence.

Our commitment to excellence shines through achievements like Cathedral’s Platinum AP Honor Roll recognition and the outstanding success of our students and educators in academics, arts, and athletics. These accomplishments reflect the hard work and Zeal that drive our community to greatness.

Integrity and family are evident in every interaction at Cathedral. Whether celebrating our retiring leader, Dave Worland, or participating in Holy Cross pilgrimages, we are strengthened by living our faith at the center of all we do.

In educating hearts and minds, Cathedral’s mission extends beyond academics. This is exemplified by initiatives like our partnership with the Village of Merici,

which fosters inclusion and service. Similarly, our community has provided hope and relief to families impacted by Hurricane Helene, demonstrating compassion and a commitment to transform lives through action.

Our dedication to inclusiveness and diversity is evident as we honor the leaders, educators, and alumni who have shaped Cathedral’s rich history in our Circle of Excellence. From embracing students of all backgrounds to fostering a culture where everyone belongs, we remain committed to ensuring that every voice is heard and valued. The Irish spirit— bold, diverse, and inclusive—continues to thrive, reflecting our unwavering belief that unity in diversity strengthens our community and mission.

The option for the poor calls us to serve those in need. Cathedral’s tuition assistance programs, including the Danny Weed ’93 Memorial Endowed Tuition Assistance Fund, ensure nearly half our students can access the transformative power of a Cathedral education, regardless of financial barriers.

Your support is vital to continuing this transformative work. Through your generosity, we empower students, enrich lives, and build a future that reflects the values of Blessed Basil Moreau. Together, we ensure Cathedral remains a beacon of faith, education, and excellence.

In faith and gratitude,

CATHEDRAL'S GROTTO

A Sacred Place for Devotion, Meditation, and Reflection

Cathedral's Grotto will be a beautiful space for the Cathedral family to pray, reflect, meditate, and fill our hearts with Zeal! It is across from the roundabout, close to the Joseph “Papa Joe” Dezelan field on Cathedral's campus. As this publication was going to print, construction crews were putting the final touches on this gorgeous sacred space. Thank you to the Ryan Hasbrook '92 family for making this project possible.

Lumen Accreditation - IDOE Grant Award Exciting Fall Semester for Cathedral High School

Cathedral High School has been granted the status of “Accredited” by The Catholic University of America (CUA) through the Institute for the Transformation of Catholic Education (ITCE) and its Lumen Accreditation program.

The Lumen Accreditation process consists of a six-year cycle of renewal. Phases throughout the process advance and promote the distinctive excellence of K-12 Catholic school education while accompanying Catholic school communities as they strive for continuous growth in fulfilling their missions spiritually, intellectually, culturally, and operationally.

“We are thrilled and humbly honored to be one of the first schools to be accredited through the Lumen program at The Catholic University of America,” said Cathedral President Rob Bridges, PhD. “For 106 years, Cathedral has led the way in Catholic education, and this accreditation is a sure sign that we are continuing to do so.”

The official accreditation status follows the completion of an onsite visit by a team of representatives from CUA and other experts from the field of Catholic education. The onsite visit team reviewed school data, observed the school community and classrooms, conducted community interviews, and provided growth and mission fulfillment recommendations.

“The Lumen Accreditation program is value-added for us, primarily because it is mission-based. Any Catholic school that really believes in its mission will be well-served by a Lumen Accreditation,” said Dr. Bridges.

Also, this fall, the Indiana Department of Education awarded Cathedral the IDOE Educational Excellence Grant for Excellence in Academic Gains. This award, worth up to $250,000, recognizes an individual school that has made the most progress in improving student achievement. According to the IDOE, the awarded funds may be used to “continue the amazing work that earned Cathedral this prestigious award.”

Congratulations to our innovative and zealous educators and our hard-working students. Greatness called, and Cathedral answered.

COLE HOCKER '19

Olympic Gold Medalist Answers the Call to Greatness on a World Stage

Electric, joyful, proud—those are just some of the words to describe the atmosphere as more than 250 people gathered in Cathedral's Dining Hall on August 6 to watch Cole Hocker '19 compete in the 1500m race at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

There were hugs, tears, and USA chants as he was first to cross the finish line in 3:27.65, setting a world record and winning the gold. Fewer things are more gratifying than seeing a family member achieve greatness on a world stage, especially someone as humble and hard-working as Hocker. And Hocker's Cathedral family could not have been prouder.

“He has always been laser-focused,” said Athletic Director Rick Streiff. “Cole has always been a competitive athlete with the talent to go with it.” Not only does Hocker have the talent and focus of a champion, but he also has the faith of one. After winning the gold medal, Hocker said, “I just let God carry me through the finish line.” Later, he added, “I just felt like I was getting carried by the stadium and God.”

It was beautiful to see our Holy Cross value of Zeal on a world stage! Zeal, which is the Holy Cross value for the 2024/25 school year, is the great desire to make God known, loved, and served. Those with this virtue fulfill their duties with eagerness, affection, courage, and perseverance. (Kind of like an Olympic champion!) Cole Hocker makes our Holy Cross value of Excellence shine like gold.

HOLY CROSS PILGRIMAGES

Dan '70 and Betsy Brunette Investment Awards Continue to Bless Educators

Professional development is highly encouraged at Cathedral, and that includes spiritual development. To transform the hearts and minds of our students, as our Mission states, Cathedral must ensure that our educators have a heart full of Zeal to make God known, loved, and served. Thanks to the generosity of Dan '70 and Betsy Brunette and the establishment of the Dan '70 and Betsy Brunette Educator Investment Award, Cathedral was able to offer a second year of life-changing Holy Cross Pilgrimages for educators.

Two groups were blessed with pilgrimages this fall. Six educators (Dawn Gilmore, Jon Kane, Michael Moffatt, Greg Smith, Grace Trahan-Rodecap, and Beth Wissler) spent a week in Italy. Thanks to Cathedral's former Chaplain Father Emmanuel, the group secured housing across the street from Vatican City. The pilgrims saw the Pope twice, during his Sunday Angelus and Wednesday Audience. They attended Mass several times at the Vatican, toured the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel, and prayed

in breathtaking Basilicas throughout Rome. “It was truly a beautiful pilgrimage shared with amazing colleagues,” said Beth Wissler. “I feel beyond blessed to have had this experience.”

The pilgrims also toured the Colosseum and Palatine Hill, another fantastic part of their journey. With that said, the highlight was their time in Assisi. While in this peaceful town perched on a quiet countryside, the pilgrims saw the tomb of Carlo Acutis, who will soon be canonized a Saint. Their special tour guide, Father Phillip, invited them to Mass at St. Francis's tomb. “That Mass moved me to tears,” said Grace Trahan-Rodecap. “During his homily, Father Phillip encouraged us to ask God each day, ‘What do you want from me today, God?’ I was inspired to include that question in my morning prayers.”

Left Photo: Attending the Pope's Wednesday Audience was a special moment during the trip.
Right Photo: The pilgrims attended a beautiful Mass here at the Tomb of St. Francis, which is located in the breathtaking Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi.

Greg Smith added, “As a recent convert to Catholicism, this journey helped me better understand and connect with the global Catholic church. I saw pilgrims from all over the world coming to Rome to seek Jesus. Being in St. Peter's Basilica, hearing Mass in Italian, reflecting on the unparalleled beauty of the vast, ornate places of worship helped remind me that our God is one for all people all over the world. I felt a sense of universality and appreciation.”

Seven Cathedral educators (Greg Bamrick, Linda Bamrick, Marian Bender, Maribeth Cloud '86, Kathy Douglass, Father Jomy Mathew, and Mark Matthews) traveled to France. “It was a blessing to be able to walk in the footsteps of Father Jacques Dujarie, founder of the Sisters of Providence, and Blessed Basil Moreau,

HOLY CROSS AWARD WINNERS

founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross,” said Mark Matthews.

The France pilgrims spent time in Paris, Le Mans (where Holy Cross was founded), Ruillé-sur-Loir, Tours, La Chapelle-Montligeon, Alençon, and Lisieux. “Participating in the Holy Cross Pilgrimage to France profoundly impacted me personally, professionally, and spiritually,” said Maribeth Cloud '86. “The highlight of the journey was visiting the Chapel of Notre Dame de l'Habit, a humble chapel in the French Countryside that belonged to Blessed Basil Moreau. I will forever be grateful for the time spent with my colleagues, praying and sharing our faith in this sacred space.”

Please help us congratulate these fantastic students who received a Holy Cross Award! Educators nominated students for living out the Holy Cross Core Values. Congratulations to all of these incredible students and their families.

Blessed

is given to students who demonstrate leadership, excel in the classroom, and serve the Cathedral family and their community. The Blessed Basil Moreau Award recipients are Paul Arthur '25, David Nevins '25, Mary Eifert '26, Michael Gallagher '26, Braydon Miles '27, Lillian Monahan '27, Jay Brooks '28, and Chase McCloud '28.

The Saint Brother André Bessette Award is given to students who provide generous service to others, involve themselves in student activities, and demonstrate Christian values. The Saint André Bessette Award recipients are Chloe Shadiow '25, Olivia Uskert '25, Alex Batt '26, Ingrid Cardoza '26, Grant DeFrantz '27, JC Pohlman '27, Ryder Carpenter '28, and Betsy Lindner '28.

We'd also like to congratulate the students and educators named Holy Cross Student and Educators for August-November. August - Issy Cadwell '26 and CeCe Kasberg '83; September - Krista Bohannon and Wade Knapp '25; October - Regina Jones '25 and Gary Spurgin, and November - Lisa Ford and Mark Ugo '25. Thank you, all, for living out our Holy Cross Values with such Zeal!

EPITOME OF A SERVANT LEADER

For generations of our Irish family, it's hard to imagine not seeing Dave Worland walking the halls at Cathedral High School. But after 22 years, two highprofile positions, countless awards, and thousands of lives impacted, Worland retired from Cathedral in October. “My health is good right now, and there is so much I still want to do before that changes,” said Worland. “My wife, Janet, and I are excited about spending more time together with our children and six grandchildren.”

Worland joined the Cathedral family as principal in 2002 after serving as Lafayette Central Catholic's principal for 15 years. Under his leadership, Cathedral won two National Blue Ribbon School awards, in 2004 and 2016. In 2017, the National Speech and Debate Association and Crossroads District named Worland Principal of the Year. And in 2019, he was named one of Indy's Most Pivotal Leaders.

While the awards speak to his hard work, many would say Worland's most significant impact has been his countless acts of kindness and commitment to serving others. There is a reason many of his Cathedral colleagues refer to him as “Saint Dave.”

“He is one of the most personable people I have ever known,” said Shannon Braun, assistant to Worland from April 2016 to January 2020. “He has a way of building people up and empowering them to believe in themselves and be the ultimate person they are meant to be.”

During his time as principal, Worland's three children, Lance Worland '05, Courtney Worland '06 Carr, and Sean Worland '09, graduated from Cathedral. Lance's

graduation started a Cathedral tradition. “When Lance received his diploma, he hugged me and told me happy birthday,” said Worland. “It was my 50th birthday that day. Later, teachers asked me if all Cathedral educators with a child graduating from Cathedral could sit on stage and hug their student after they received their diploma. The answer, of course, was yes!”

In 2020, Worland moved from the Principal's Office to the Advancement Office and was named Senior Vice President for Mission and Advancement. While this position kept him busy, he continued his community outreach. Worland serves on the board for the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. He is also a former board member of the IHSAA. He is heavily involved with the Catholic Business Exchange and Champions Together, a collaborative partnership between the IHSAA and Special Olympics Indiana.

Dave Worland Retires After 22 Years of Service
Top Photo: Dave poses with Darrin Gray (pictured left) and former Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy (pictured center) during the 100th Dad's Day Meeting at Cathedral in 2014.
Right Photo: Courtney Worland '06 Carr and Sean Worland '09 congratulate their brother Lance Worland '05 on his graduation from Cathedral.

“Mr. Worland has been an incredible presence in Bryce's Cathedral journey, playing a pivotal role not only as a mentor but also as an inspiration,” said Christine Hahn, whose son Bryce graduated in 2024. “Through Bryce's involvement in Champions Together, Mr. Worland became a guiding force, helping Bryce develop his leadership skills and passion for enhancing Cathedral's impact. Their shared compassion and empathy for others is truly remarkable.”

Worland was inducted into Cathedral's Circle of Excellence in 2022, and true to those who know him, his retirement from Cathedral has not slowed his drive for excellence or his Zeal for helping others. Among his volunteer work, he is co-chairing a capital campaign benefiting Washington Catholic Schools and Lady of Hope Parish in Southern Indiana. “That is where I was blessed to get my first high school job,” said Worland, “and it's where Janet and I met and were married.”

As Worland reflects on the past and focuses on the future, he said, “I hope to be remembered for my commitment to collaboration with teachers, other administrators, parents, and the wider community, working together to ensure a Holy Cross Catholic education that prepares students for the challenges of the future.”

The Cathedral family is forever grateful to you, Dave Worland, for your commitment, loyalty, and service to dear old Cathedral, and we hope you can get some much-deserved rest as you continue your work selflessly in serving those around you.

Cathedral's Johnny Mac's Coffeehouse Partners With Village of Merici

In August 2024, Village of Merici clients started volunteering in Cathedral's Johnny Mac's Coffeehouse, allowing them to expand their work skills and give back to the community. Cathedral's Chris Beaty '00 Entrepreneurship Class, led by educator Kurt Freytag, operates the coffeehouse and has the added benefit of fostering new friendships while honoring the school's Holy Cross Core Value of Inclusivity and Diversity.

The Village of Merici provides direct support services and independent, apartment-style housing to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Overarching goals addressed through the mission include independence, housing, employment readiness, social skills, community integration, and self-advocacy.

Colleen Renie, a former Cathedral parent, wanted a place where her son Jason could live independently and maintain a sense of community. In 2005, she and a small group of parents of intellectually and developmentally disabled adult children met to discuss the possibility of developing a residential program rooted in mutual support. They called the concept Village of Merici after St. Angela Merici, a 15th-century Italian woman who became known for her extraordinary service to the poor, the displaced, and other marginalized people. Colleen Renie's son Matt, who graduated from Cathedral High School in 2011, has formed business ventures with lifelong friend, professional football player, and 2011 Cathedral graduate Ted Karras to raise thousands of dollars for the organization.

Johnny Mac's Coffeehouse opened at Cathedral High School in March of 2023. It is dedicated to the memory of John McCormick, also known as Johnny Mac, a 1990 graduate of Cathedral High School and educator whose passion was ensuring his students learn how to “get along in life,” especially concerning finances. His family and friends have no doubt he would be pleased about this beautiful collaboration.

Top Photo: The family poses for a beautiful picture following the November 2024 baptism of Dave and Janet Worland's granddaughter, Marley.
Right Photo: Jason Renie (pictured left) enjoys working alongside Cathedral students in Johnny Mac's Coffeehouse.

We believe every child has the potential for greatness and our exceptional educators challenge their students every day. The result? Whatever future you may choose, you will get the best possible start at Cathedral. And it starts the moment you arrive.

Nearly 1,200 students from 68 zip codes and 14 counties are impacted by the Cathedral experience.

THE HIGH SCHOOL SELECTION PROCESS

The High School Selection Process is excellent preparation for the experience of choosing a college: the sooner you begin learning about your school options, the more opportunities you will have to experience campuses and find the right fit for your child!

As early as kindergarten, students can attend Camp Cathedral on the Cathedral High School campus. It's a wonderful opportunity to get to know the school and meet great educators and coaches. Visit CampCathedral.com in February for a list of summer camps for the summer of 2025.

Also, in elementary and middle school, consider attending school events to learn about the culture and traditions of the school. This can include theatre, choir, orchestra, band, and sports.

Join the mailing and email lists of schools your family is interested in by contacting the admissions office. This will ensure you receive invitations to events and important information about the school. Cathedral's admissions office can be reached at admissions@gocathedral.com or 317.968.7368

EMPOWERING GREATNESS

THE DANNY WEED '93 MEMORIAL ENDOWED TUITION ASSISTANCE FUND

Great guy. Everyone's friend. Wonderful sense of humor. Those are some of the phrases used to describe Danny Weed '93. “Everyone loved Danny,” said his stepfather, John Collins. “He had a big heart, and family was very important to him.”

Sadly, Danny Weed passed away in September 2020 at the age of 44, but his family wanted to make sure his legacy lived on. That's why they established the Danny Weed '93 Memorial Endowed Tuition Fund. “All four of our children graduated from Cathedral, and we have two grandkids there now,” said Collins. We wanted to do what we could to give other children an opportunity to get a Cathedral education as our children and two of our grandchildren have been so fortunate to do.”

“The love everyone felt for Danny was so evident on the day of his funeral,” said his mother, Mary Collins. “We received enough donations to purchase a lovely bench in his honor that now sits on Cathedral's campus. Thanks to the bench and this endowment, his spirit will be with us forever.”

Cathedral is deeply grateful to Danny Weed's family for their generosity and for honoring his legacy by making a meaningful difference in the life of another student. If you want to learn more about endowed funds, please scan the QR code.

EMPOWERING GREATNESS

CRAFTS

FOR KIDS AND SWIFTIES

Cathedral students got crafty this quarter, making everything from bookmarks to bracelets. On Cathedral's 106th birthday, September 13, students made bookmarks, keychains, rosaries, and other items later delivered to nearby Catholic grade schools. On Philanthropy Day, students created dozens of friendship bracelets with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officers. Officer Iris Farries and McKenzie Jordan '27 (pictured left) had a great time creating bracelets. Officers who worked patrol downtown for the Taylor Swift concert handed out the bracelets to “Swifties” as they made their way to the show.

And speaking of philanthropy, thank you to everyone who donated to our Ignite the Irish student fundraiser! Students raised nearly $260,000, which will go toward tuition assistance. Students also donated a portion of their funds to their favorite club or activity.

GRAND REUNION

From 1954 to 2019, classes ending in 4 and 9 had a wonderful time at this year's Grand Reunion. “Lifelong Connections” isn't just a slogan; it's a reality at Cathedral High School.

FOREVER IRISH LADIES BRUNCH

An annual fall favorite, the Forever Irish Ladies Brunch combines brunch with engaging the lifelong connections of Cathedral. This is a great opportunity for Cathedral mothers, alumnae, alumni mothers, and grandmothers to reconnect with friends and make new ones!

Our keynote speaker this year was Indiana's Chief Justice Loretta Rush, who shared how her Catholic faith has guided her impactful 40-year career in the legal field. Special thanks to our Sponsors and our Irish Angel Hostesses! Also, thank you to the Irish Adrenaline Show Choir for providing beautiful music to kick off the morning.

CATHEDRAL BRINGS CHRISTMAS TO NORTH CAROLINA

As a Holy Cross school, we educate the hearts and minds of our students, meaning we combine knowledge with values to transform our young people and empower them to make a difference in the world. A significant way we did that this fall was by asking our students to make a difference in the lives of two Catholic grade schools still reeling from the impact of Hurricane Helene.

“When I was at Muskegon Catholic in Michigan, our students helped school communities down south rebuild after Hurricane Katrina,” said Cathedral President Dr. Rob Bridges. “It was a life-changing experience for everyone involved, and when I heard about the devastation in North Carolina, I knew this was an opportunity for Cathedral to make a difference.”

Thanks to one of our educators, Sister Mary Ann Stewart, we were able to connect with Immaculata Catholic School in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Director of Marketing Grace Trahan-Rodecap called the school's principal and quickly learned about the devastation in the small Catholic community. “Students and teachers suffered huge losses,” said Trahan-Rodecap. “Many in the school either had homes damaged or destroyed. I asked Principal (Margaret) Beale, ‘How can we help?’”

Principal Beale shared that with everything her community dealt with, many families were convinced their children wouldn't have presents this Christmas. Principal Beale wanted to change that, so Immaculata partnered with Asheville Catholic School to open a Christmas Store for families heavily impacted by the storm.

Cathedral went to work bringing in toys and donating to the schools' Amazon Wish List. President Bridges, educator Br. Matt Rehagen, and Cathedral parents Joe Haley and Andrew Spencer delivered the toys to the

schools in early December. “I am just overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the Cathedral family,” said Principal Beale. “Cathedral has richly blessed our community, and we are forever grateful.”

The hope is that Cathedral's partnership with the North Carolina schools continues. “I'd love to see our students return in the fall to do service projects,” said President Bridges. “As a Catholic Holy Cross school, we have much hope to bring!”

CHRISTMAS ON THE HILL

Christmas came early to the Hill as we celebrated Christmas on the Hill on December 9. Roughly 300 kindergarten through third-grade students from Enlace Academy came to Cathedral to decorate cookies, play games, bounce in bounce houses, see their favorite cartoon characters, pet animals (including reindeer), and meet Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Santa ditched the sleigh and arrived in an IndyCar (pictured bottom left), thanks to Cathedral parent and IndyCar driver and team owner Ed Carpenter! We want to thank everyone who played a role in making this day so special, including Aly Saum '12 Weaver, and educators Lisa Finn and Katie Lewis. Also, thank you to Andrew Christiansen '99 and The Crabby Apple Family Orchard and Market, the Cathedral Mothers' Club, and our friends at Indy Characters and More LLC.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA

Director of Admissions Anna Taul and her family thoroughly enjoyed Breakfast with Santa this year! Her husband, Wes Taul, is holding their daughter, Monica Taul '42. James Taul '40 is sitting on his mom's lap, and John Taul '38 is seated far right. We want to thank Cathedral's Alumni Association and Choir Program for providing this winter wonderland of fun for our Cathedral family

CATHEDRAL KICKS OFF GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM

Cathedral was excited to start a flag football program this season, the second year it's been offered in Indiana. Girls flag football is led by the NFL's PLAY 60 Program, with the Indianapolis Colts as Cathedral's local franchise sponsoring 30 area teams in 2024.

The Irish went undefeated in three games in 2024, improving with each game and establishing a solid foundation for the future. Teams were divided throughout the state into four-team pods, with the Irish going unbeaten within their pod against Bishop Chatard, Christel House, and Purdue Polytechnic.

“I didn't try to overwhelm them by giving them too many plays and things like that,” Coach Eric Bruns said. “We ran four or five plays and just got them

down really well and then worked on some basic fundamentals and practices, and that seemed to pay off.”

There was no postseason in 2024, but there are plans to build toward that in the future and add more regular season games. Bruns said there is a strong effort to grow flag football locally and nationwide, especially with flag football being an Olympic sport in 2028.

“We had a booth at Open House this year like all the other sports, and we had a lot of foot traffic of girls who came in that were interested in possibly participating. We'll probably have even more girls interested in wanting to play next year, which is a good thing,” shared Bruns.

Sports Wraps

Competition Cheer Team

Cathedral's Competition Cheer Team finished first in their division at the Hoosier Regional and will compete in the UCA National Cheerleading Championships at Walt Disney World in February. Go Irish!

Boys Cross Country

Brian Gross, Cathedral's girls cross country coach since 2023, took over as head coach of the boys program in 2024. It was a program comprised of a strong senior class with an eye for the future and some young runners who should form the program's core moving forward.

“The number one thing that stood out was an outstanding group of seniors,” Gross said. “They were hard workers, good guys. They were always looking for a way to pitch in and help out. Their competitiveness and their grind really stood out. My only regret was that I wish I had a chance to coach those seniors for the last four years. I'm proud of the success they had this season.”

Leading the Irish in 2024 was senior Will Wise, who missed the postseason with a stress fracture after running in the 16:40s during the regular season. Wise is considering running collegiately.

The Irish boys finished seventh in the Section 17 meet at Mount Vernon.

Football

This season was about perseverance, and the Irish very much persevered and excelled.

“The kids rose to the occasion multiple times,” Head Coach Bill Peebles '88 said.

The Irish in Peebles' seventh season as head coach finished 6-4 against one of the state's toughest schedules in 2024, beating perennial state powers such as Center Grove and Ben Davis. Though faced with injuries at the season's start, the Irish finished the regular season seventh in the state Class 6A Sagarin ratings and seventh in the state Class 6A USA Today rankings.

The Irish followed a difficult regular season with a strong start to the postseason. They beat North Central, 36-0, in the Class 6A Section 6 semifinal before losing to No. 1-ranked Lawrence North, 24-7, in the section final. Lawrence North marked the third No. 1-ranked team the Irish played in 2024.

Girls Cross Country

Cathedral High School girls cross country built for the future in 2024 and turned in a strong season with a young, talented roster. The future is bright for a traditionally strong program.

The Irish girls in Brian Gross' second season as head coach featured a slew of productive freshmen led by a senior, Addison Stanley, who provided valuable experience and leadership.

“We knew we were bringing in talent, but how deep that was was surprising,” Gross said.

The Irish girls finished second in the Section 17 and 15th in the Region 4 meet.

Girls Golf

Transitioning from a veteran lineup to a younger team, Cathedral High School girls golf achieved a successful 2024 season.

The Irish improved significantly throughout Nick Jamell's '13 second season as girls golf coach, finishing a strong third in the 2024 City Tournament, then advancing through the sectional round and into the regional round of the postseason.

“I was really pleased to make it out of sectionals and have a good showing in the City,” Jamell said.

The Irish finished third in the Section 18 meet at Maple Creek Golf Course and 12th in the Region 4 Tournament.

The 2024 season provides a solid foundation for the future, with young golfers on the Varsity and JV gaining experience—and entering the offseason focused on improving and moving forward.

Boys Soccer

There was accomplishment, and there was disappointment. And if the latter came at the end of Cathedral High School's 2024 boys soccer season, that doesn't overshadow all that came before.

The Irish spent Joel Russell's fifth season as head coach of one of Indiana's top programs achieving multiple huge victories and standout performances before a heartbreaking loss in the postseason.

“Ultimately we were measuring this team's success by how well we did in the playoffs,” Russell said.

The Irish, who finished the 2024

season 14-4-2 and No. 8 in the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association Class 3A rankings, won two games in the Section 10, Class 3A tournament before losing the title game to Lawrence North 1-1 on the ninth penalty kick.

“We outshot them 25 to 5, but with soccer, a break happens here or there, and the time starts ticking real fast if you're on the wrong side of it,” Russell said. “For us, the stars didn't align our way that night.”

The Irish beat Shortridge 3-0 in the first round of the sectional and Lawrence Central 3-0 in the sectional semifinal.

Girls Soccer

They achieved and grew. Cathedral High School girls soccer turned in big victory after big victory in 2024, all of which made it a significant season for what is perennially one of Indiana's top programs.

“We really had a fantastic year, all things considered,” Marc Behringer '84 said.

The Irish in 2024 registered yet another strong season in Behringer's 29th season as head coach, ranking among the state's top programs with a strong senior class while transitioning with one of the youngest teams of his tenure.

Girls Soccer (cont.)

The Irish finished the season No. 10 in the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association state Class 3A rankings. Among the team standouts was senior Abby Beasley, whose accomplishments include being named to the ISCA AllState First Team.

The Irish finished the 2024 season 13-5-2, losing to Carmel 3-1 in the Section 9 championship game after beating nationally ranked Westfield in the sectional semifinal.

Boys Tennis

This was a strong season, full of memorable moments. Cathedral High School boys tennis continued its strong tradition in 2024—and if it wasn't an easy season, it was a fulfilling one.

“It was the most positive season we've had in my four years here,” Jeff Giles said.

The '24 Irish in Giles' fourth season as head coach finished 9-8, again navigating one of the state of Indiana's toughest schedules en route to many highlight moments, including a fourth consecutive City Championship, a second consecutive sectional championship, and a regional championship.

“From a record standpoint, you might look and say, ‘Gosh, these guys were 9-8; that was kind of a mediocre season,’” Giles said, “but it was very positive as far as reaching our goals.”

Girls Volleyball

Cathedral High School girls volleyball achieved much in 2024, continuing to grow a program that long has been one of Indiana's best.

“When we revisit memories from this season, it will definitely be with pride because of how much this group overcame,” Karrie Quenichet said.

In Quenichet's third season as girls volleyball coach, the Irish overcame injuries to key contributors and starters— and the absence of multiple projected starters—to again achieve postseason success.

“Before the season even began, senior leadership looked a little different than what we had envisioned,” Quenichet said. “But these girls worked so hard to redirect and reshape this program for what would eventually be their legacy to pass on.”

The Irish registered a victory over Class 2A power Brownstown Central, who entered the postseason ranked No. 1 in the state, and two victories over Center Grove. They also beat Westfield, Brebeuf Jesuit, New Castle, and Penn teams—and won a City Championship.

The Irish finished in the Top 15 overall in the state for a third consecutive season.
