People’s Choice Festival is more than just a home for local artists By ALEXA LEWIS correspondent@centrecountygazette.com BOALSBURG — The 23rd annual People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts and Crafts will again celebrate the homegrown talents of Pennsylvania artists while also offering a variety of activities for families. On the grassy grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum in historic Boalsburg, the fourday festival starts on Thursday, July 9, and ends on Sunday, July 12, simultaneously as the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts takes place in State College. People’s Choice began in 1993 by local artisans who were cut from the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts’ line-up.
To this day, the festival still features only instate artisans, and it has reached its maximum capacity for artists this year with nearly 200 set to participate. But beyond showcasing art from home-based artists, the festival harnesses a different atmosphere than that found at Arts Fest. “I think people come to our festival for family time and — to be perfectly honest — for affordable art and the open atmosphere,” said Cindy Rockey, one of the festival’s co-directors. “You’re walking on grass instead of down streets.” More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the festival this year to enjoy the art, but also the 22 food concessions, six wineries, 12 specialty food vendors and more than 40 entertaining groups. And Rockey really wanted to emphasize that kids’

events are scheduled throughout all four days of the festival. Every day is a kids’ day, she said, with activities that range from face painting and a petting zoo to an interactive science museum. A designated children’s circle will host most of the activities that are intended for kids, which also include a BMX stunt team, tie dying and the Little Smilin’ Choo Choo. “I call it a safer atmosphere because all the children’s things are in the circle. It’s smaller than running up and down streets,” Rockey said. The specialty food tent features local food producers serving some of Pennsylvania’s best treats including maple sugar candy, chutneys, coffee beans and salsa, according to the event’s website. Guests can also expect to hear a variety of musical genres throughout all four days with performances ranging from the Happy Valley Cloggers and the Keystone Society of Swing to Saturday night’s headliners, the Cliff Turner Band and the local band Pure Cane Sugar. This festival isn’t just limited to people. Dogs are welcome and the specialty tent — for the first time — will sell dog treats. Family-friendly People’s Choice Festival has grown through the years From Gazette staff reports BOALSBURG — It’s been 22 years since a handful of volunteers got together to create a homegrown arts festival. In 1993, there were 50 vendors, a couple food stands and a few live bands. Now it’s one of the largest and most family-friendly arts festivals in central Pennsylvania — attracting more than 110,000 visitors over a four-day period. This year, the People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts features nearly 200 artists, about two dozen food vendors and more than 40 acts on the two stages. The event started when George Marion, a local artist, wanted to start a brand new arts festival to be held on a grassy lawn in Boalsburg. It seemed that there were far more local artists than could possibly be accommodated at State College’s Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. Marion and his compatriots wanted a venue to share their creations at the same time. Marion and his wife, Nancy, both energetic artisans, were up to the challenge of organizing the first event. Marion placed an ad in the paper and there was a write-up, as well.
Cindy Rockey, who had already organized a few such events, suggested the Pennsylvania Military Museum grounds as a good location — and it remains an exceptional venue to this day. Rockey recommended a few artists and also signed up as an artist, showcasing her handmade stuffed animals, household decorations and specialty Christmas items. John Madison, who was new to the area in 1993, had been helping his wife, Georgia, as she sewed her handmade welder’s hats. “We were just getting into the hat-making business,” Madison said, “and I saw the article in the paper. We went to George and Nancy’s house and took our hats with us.” The Madisons were accepted into the first show. Rockey and Madison, are now the co-directors of the People’s Choice Festival. They took over a few years ago when the Marions retired and moved south. With all the work they do to present each festival, neither one exhibits at the show anymore. Their artistic labor of love has become the show itself. “I think there were about 60 artists that first year,” Madison said. “They were all along the military

museum entrance road, with about four food vendors over by the monuments. We had one little stage. It was a hay wagon. Someone made us a yellow, red and blue canvas backdrop and a little roof. That was it, a hay wagon. The festival now has two huge entertainment tents that seat hundreds. Chris Kepler, the event’s entertainment director, remembers one particular year quite vividly. “One that stands out was, I believe in 1995, when the storm blew the entertainment tent down at night and the firemen took the gear to the fire hall for safekeeping. We got things up and running in time to open the next morning. Diana Stapleford, a broadcast executive with Magnum Broadcasting, has been with the festival for 18 years as marketing and sponsorship director. She’s responsible for publicity and raising funds for the festival. People’s Choice runs on donations and sponsorships. “The more donations and sponsors we get, the more we can improve the show year after year. We appreciate this support more than you know, Stapleford said. The People’s Choice grounds are so spacious, no matter how large the crowd, visitors feel free and unfettered. Some festivalgoers bring babies in strollers or their pets. One of the things that makes People’s Choice a little different from most arts festivals is that all the artists, entertainers and food vendors are from Pennsylvania. The selection of arts and food are also chosen to suit the budgets of growing families.
“At first, this was a ‘silly little arts festival’ that nobody thought would come to much of anything, Madison said. “Thanks to George and Nancy, it’s become ‘the local show’ in my opinion. Many local folks come every year, every day. The people have really supported the People’s Choice Festival, and we appreciate it. The festival exists because of the Marions’ energy, enthusiasm and perseverance. Sadly, Nancy passed away last year; George now lives in Florida. They’d be proud of their legacy, and, 22 shows later, how the “second generation of volunteers is taking it to the next level, while preserving the original goals — exclusively Pennsylvania vendors and entertainers, affordable crafts and a wholesome family experience.

MUSIC
Lineup
By KENDALL RUSSELL correspondent@centrecountygazette.com BOALSBURG — This year’s lineup at the People’s Choice Festival features some old favorites — Velveeta and Riley Roth will both perform — but expect to see some new faces, too, such as up-and-coming fiddler Megan McGarry. Check out the daily schedule for the festival’s free live entertainment.
THURSDAY, JULY 9 11:30 A.M. ■ North: Anything Goes
Three music lovers form the core of this band: Jim Kerhin on plectrum banjo, Jim Chapman on soprano saxophone and trombone player Mike Loewen. They’re known for playing just about any genre — hence their name, “Anything Goes.” And, yes, their set does include Cole Porter’s song of the same name. The band recently made an appearance at Centre County’s Grange Fair.
■ South: Leia Wasbotten PSU vocalist Leia Wasbotten is no stranger to the stage. From soloing as a member of Penn State’s Essence of Joy choir to winning the grand prize at the Centre Sings 2015 competition, Wasbotten’s soaring pipes stretch far beyond her years. She’s at home behind a set of piano keys, but put a mic in her hand and she’ll blow you away.
1 P.M.
■ North: Ride the Song A trio of old friends who share a love for blues, folk and country, Ride the Song makes music as slick as their beards. Banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar and harmonica — once these guys set down their instruments, your soul will be hurting for more. This acoustic group recently lit up the stage at Blair County Arts Festival and WCCS Radio’s Acoustic Hour.
4 P.M.
■ North: The Strayers Bill Strayer started laying down music tracks back in the ’90s, but his career took a turn for the better once he met his future wife and accordionist, Denise. The duo became a trio when State College native Josh Troupe joined up as percussionist not long after. In 2014 they released their eponymous debut album, which features six original songs and a one-of-a-kind blend of folk and Americana.
■ South: Urban Fusion Band Two vocalists and four musicians comprise this decades-old group dedicated to the sound of cool, honeyed jazz. An eclectic group of students, professors and local music enthusiasts, Urban Fusion finds new ways to coalesce the best parts of jazz and rhythm and blues with each toe-tapping performance.
5:30 P.M.
■ North: Make Mine Country With Shelby Nester as lead vocalist and Jim Wilson as lead guitarist at the band’s helm, Make Mine Country pursues one singular goal: to keep traditional country music alive. The band recently opened the show at The Wheeling Jamboree, a gathering of country music lovers from regions all across the U.S.
■ South: Justin Fabus
Classic rock isn’t going anywhere, and it’s because musicians like The Backyard Rockers are constantly finding fresh ways to reinvigorate the genre. Known for their “free-form approach,” these musicians channel Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, reminding us all why they were the best musicians of their time. The Rockers recently added a new guitarist/bassist, Mo Yon, to their lineup.
Named one of the “Best-Up-And-Coming Pittsburgh Bands” of 2014, Justin Fabus is a budding country music star with a modern take on the classic genre. At only 28 years old, he’s performed at locations up and down the East Coast with standout musicians such as Gary Allan and Craig Campbell. Fabus released his first EP back in 2013, and followed that up with a new single and music video, “Kiss of a Gypsy,” last summer.
2:30 P.M.
7 P.M.
Highlighting the trumpet, trombone and tuba players from the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band, Heritage Brass brings the sound loud and proud. They play everything from classic arrangements to modern pop, from Bach to the Beatles, and have performed at spots all over the Mid-Atlantic and New England. They’ve also entertained stadium-sized crowds at Major League baseball games and NASCAR races.
Most of the members of this band may be reaching their golden years, but a little maturity isn’t stopping these musicians from livening up a crowd. These talented instrumentalists play everything from jazz and swing to big band covers and Latin hits. The Second Winds proves that age really is just a number — but music is timeless.
■ South: The Wreckers
The ’80s are back and they’re better than ever. One of the most iconic bands in the State College area, Velveeta has entertained crowds here for nearly two decades. No longer just a “cheesy ‘80s cover band,” Velveeta has earned a wide fan following with their electrifying setlists. Good luck staying in your seat when they cover fun classics such as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “My Sharona” and “Safety Dance.”
■ South: The Backyard Rockers
■ North: Heritage Brass
The Wreckers started off as just a pair, the Mark and Roy Band, but quickly grew into a full-sized band, adding a drummer, bassist and stellar vocalist Kasi Damiano to their crew. Their setlists feature the best pop/rock tracks of the modern age (Bruno Mars, Neon Trees), with some unforgettable classics, such as the Eagles, to get crowds of all ages on their feet.

FRIDAY, JUNE 10 11:30 A.M.
■ North: Guitarman Studios Rock School A local music workshop nestled in the downtown area, the guys behind Guitarman Studios have taught music to central Pennsylvania youth for more than 20 years. Some of these performers aren’t old enough to hold a learner’s permit, but they do know how to shred a guitar — and they’ve been practicing for months to show off their precocious musical skills. Adults love them; other kids want to be them. ■ South: Easterly Chamber Players This trio of classically trained musicians has performed simple, heart-wrenching arrangements together since 2006. Flutist Diana Gold Toulson teaches at State College’s Music Academy, while her husband, Smith, recently retired from Penn State as a professor of clarinet. Rounding out the group is harpist Anne Sullivan, who has released two solo CDs and four chamber music recordings.
1 P.M.
■ North: Riley Roth She’s only 16, but Roth has come a long way from releasing her first album at age 11. Currently dominating the Reverbnation Country Charts for State College, Roth placed as a finalist at the Texaco Country Showdown and was also invited to audition for season 8 of NBC’s “The Voice.” Move over, Taylor Swift — there’s a new pop-country star blowing up in front of our eyes. ■ South: Tussey Mountain Moonshiners Winners of the 2010 DelFest Bluegrass Band Competition, the Moonshiners love everything to do with bluegrass and string music. They’re a five-piece quintet with a long history of playing together, but they don’t sing covers — originals only, please. The Moonshiners released their debut album, “I’m Going Home,” with 13 original tracks, to stellar critic review in 2011.
2:30 P.M.
■ North: State College Rock Camp Rock Camp is a music education program that helps kids aged 10 to 18 reach their full potential as artists, teaching them everything they need to know to put on an awesome live performance. Guided by drummer Matt Price and guitarist Jeff Gibble, instructors at Robert M. Sides Family Music Center, these young rockers will play as part of the new “Young Performer Series” alongside other budding musicians. ■ South: Dave Wilson “Smooth” Trio From the age of nine, Dave Wilson knew he wanted to be a musician. Now, decades later, he’s an accomplished saxophonist who’s performed at the Jazz by Night festival, the Scranton Jazz Festival and Harrisburg’s American Music Festival, and headlined at JazzFest in York. He’s the leader of his own contemporary jazz trio, and they’ve rebranded what it means to be “smooth” with their unique arrangements.
4 P.M.
■ North: Megan McGarry McGarry is a young artist with massive potential. Picking up her first fiddle at 6 years old, she’s been on stage performing bluegrass and other American roots tunes for 12 years. Now a singer/songwriter at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, McGarry has added new instruments to her repertoire, including the mandolin, mandola and clawhammer banjo. Her warm personality also helps attract younger fiddlers-in-training to her private tutoring sessions. ■ South: Lenina Crowne Eric Faust and Mike Mulligan first came together to play music as Penn State freshmen. Since then, their band has gained five new members and a major following in the State College area.

Justin Fabus, of Pittsburgh, is a budding country music star with a modern take on the classic genre. Named after the same Lenina of Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” the band is known for its quirky conflation of indie, folk and rock ‘n’ roll — and self-described “groovy” sound.
5:30 P.M.
■ North: Happy Valley Cloggers Clogging is an American style of folk dance that involves impossibly complex footwork and rhythmic tapping. No one does it better than the Happy Valley Cloggers, who put on a fiery performance at last year’s People’s Choice Festival. With national clogging champion Kimberly Fliko at the organization’s head, the Cloggers are guaranteed to get crowds cheering at the upcoming Summer’s Best Music Fest, the Bellefonte Children’s Festival and the Bloomsburg Wine Festival. ■ South: Joe Bonson & Coffee Run The members of this traditional country band have been writing their own original songs for more than a decade. Bonson has garnered a reputation for his deep, smoky vocals, leading the band through five CD releases and many years of successful live performances. Their newest album, “Lookin’ Back,” will be available for purchase during their People’s Choice set, and the band is scheduled to perform at the Shade Gap Picnic and the Juniata County Fair later this summer.
7 P.M.
■ North: Deacons of Dixieland An experienced eight-man band, the Deacons play waltzes, blues, country, polka and more, all repurposed to fit their colorful Dixieland jazz style. They’ve entertained crowds in the State College area since 1988, but have even traveled as far as New Orleans to put on dazzling shows. The Deacons released a 19-track CD, “Revival,” in 2008. They’re also scheduled to perform at Bellefonte’s Summer Jazz Festival later this summer. ■ South: Pure Cane Sugar These sweet sirens embody the phrase “girl power.” A longtime local favorite, Sugar is comprised of three talented musicians — Kate Twoey, Molly Countermine and Natalie Race — and their backup band. When these ladies come together to perform, their weaving vocal harmonies will play in your head long after the show has ended. You can normally catch their pure Americana sound at local bars such as Zeno’s Pub, Big Spring Spirits and Elk Creek Cafe.

■ South: JR Mangan Band featuring Olivia Jones Another local favorite, JR has served up tunes and tonics at Cafe 210 West since the 1980s. Olivia Jones, a recent Penn State graduate with sultry pipes and an impressive range, joined up with JR’s band last year. Together, they’ve put on awesome shows multiple nights per week, with crowds dancing and singing along to old classics such as “Take On Me” and more modern mixes of songs like “Killing Me Softly.”
SATURDAY, JUNE 11 11:30 A.M.
2:30 P.M.
■ North: Harrisburg Mandolin Ensemble
■ North: Richard Benninghoff Richard Benninghoff isn’t just a magician — he’s also a skilled entertainer with years of experience under his glittering belt. He has a reputation for involving audience members directly in his show, making for a unique interactive experience. In his years entertaining in State College, Benninghoff has performed at company events, parties, festivals and family reunions.
■ South: Triple A Blues Band Andy Tolins is a bluegrass, blues and swing aficionado, and he’s lent his talent to multiple bands in the State College area throughout his career. He currently acts as the frontman for the Tolins’ Bluegrass Revue and Triple A Blues Band, a quintet devoted to urban and country blues. Their debut CD, “Highwater,” won the award for Billboard/Musician Magazine’s Best Unsigned Band Competition. Tolins is also a member of The Screaming Ducks, a classic rock band out of State College.
1 P.M.
■ North: Keystone Society of Swing A group of musicians as young as 18 and as old as 80, the Keystone Society is a long-running nonprofit organization with a history of recreating the classic sound of swing music. From charity balls in Danville to fundraisers in Lock Haven, the band has performed all over Pennsylvania since 1985. Audiences are always brought to their feet by the Society’s bouncy melodies and enthusiasm for big band swing of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s.
Forged in the summer of 2011 by a common passion for the mandolin family of instruments, this Harrisburg quintet dabbles in a variety of genres: bluegrass, jazz, classical, roots and more. The band plays both covers and original arrangements, fully exploring the range of string music with five members as opposed to the traditional four. Most recently, they’ve played to receptive audiences at the Bellevue Park Community Concert and the Lewisburg Arts Festival.
■ South: Thunderbolts Production Unit Thunderbolts Production Unit is a nonprofit youth organization in Berks County that instructs girls in the art of baton twirling. With some students as young as age 3, these performers are as cute as they are talented. The Thunderbolts also incorporate dance, props and pom-poms into their routines, so they are sure to have some surprises in store for the People’s Choice audience. Earlier this month, the girls put on an unforgettable show at the Shoemakersville’s 250th Anniversary and Children’s Fair.
4 P.M.
■ North: Black Cat Belly Dance and Friends Shannon Bishop is an expert in Middle Eastern and Egyptian styles of belly dance, and her dance troupe, Pepper Lotus Dance Ensemble, is the only of its kind in the entire region. With her exotic, languid movements, Bishop and her troupe have hypnotized audiences up and down the East Coast. She’s been invited to perform at People’s Choice numerous times in the past, and also puts on regular shows at Kaarma India Restaurant in downtown State College.
■ South: Chiz Rider Ministries A self-taught trumpet player, Chiz Rider has been refining his jazz/pop fusion since he first picked up an instrument at age 4. He performs at more than 250 concerts annually alongside other popular Christian acts such as Carman, DC and Larnell Harris. As a jazz artist, Rider is dedicated to expressing a powerful love of God within all of his music.

■ North: David Zentner Trio
Submitted photo
The Tussey Mountain Moonshiners are one of several local bands that will appear at the People’s Choice Festival.
If you’re a fan of Conway Twitty and George Strait, you’ll love David Zentner’s humble, down-to-earth brand of classic country. A former solo musician from Nashville, Tenn., Zentner takes audiences back to when heartwarming country music reigned Billboard’s singles chart. Zentner recently released a CD, “My Kind of Country,” and is scheduled to take the stage at both the Central PA Festival of the Arts and the Mifflin County Youth Fair.
20 — People’s Choice Festival 2015 — Centre County Gazette
■ South: Your Dad’s Friends Self-described as Central PA’s Good Times & Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Band, Your Dad’s Friends first coalesced in Altoona in 2002. Known for their oldies rock sound and tight vocal harmonies, the band is influenced by bands such as The Monkees, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones and The Turtles. Watch out, festivalgoers, the British Invasion has arrived in State College.
7 P.M.
■ North: Little German Band The Little German Band has been reviving traditional German culture in State College for more than half a century, recreating the era of Munich brass bands and entertaining audiences with waltzes, authentic German folk, marches, polka and a few original arrangements. Decked out in lederhosen purchased in Germany, the Little German Band has put on shows at Octoberfest in Baltimore and the NYC Baron Von Steubon Parade, as well as a private performance for former President Jimmy Carter.
■ South: Cliff Turner Band With a musical career spanning four decades, no one knows bass guitar like Cliff Turner. Last year he added keyboardist Joseph Tombasco and vocalist Tabby Wilson to his crew. It’s unlikely any State College band has a wider selection of covers — they play everything from modern pop such as Bruno Mars to classic artists such as David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac. You can catch one of their energetic performances any Friday or Saturday night at The Darkhorse Tavern.
SUNDAY, JULY 12 10:30 A.M.
■ North: St. John’s UCC with Nittany Knights No one can ever say going to church is boring — not when there are choruses as lively as the Nittany Knights around. The Knights have been singing a capella since before the girls from “Pitch Perfect” were even born, so it’s safe to say they know how to put on a great show. The chorus performs regularly at local events such as Grange Fair and the Foxdale Residents Concert, but also offers special treats such as holiday sing-a-grams for that special someone on Valentine’s Day.
11:30 A.M.
■ South: Andy Angel Quartet We missed this quartet at last year’s People’s Choice — their big band sound, influenced by jazz and contemporary rock, steal the spotlight whenever they start up a tune. Headed by Andy Angel, a seasoned professional trumpet player, the quartet balances out their huge sound with smooth, lighthearted rhythms. The band plays often at the York Swing Club and PA Dancesport in Hummelstown.
NOON
■ North: KJ KJ, of Lewisburg, is a singer and guitarist with a penchant for writing deeply personal, affecting lyrics. Her ballads draw from folk influences, but each of her evocative songs resonate with original melodies and harmonies no other artist could produce. When she’s not performing at festivals and concerts, KJ brings her warm personality to stages as a motivational speaker, combining her music with uplifting themes of optimism.
1:30 P.M.
■ North: Altoona Chapter Sweet Adelines This Altoona-based chorus features an all-female lineup of passionate vocalists of all ages. Trained in barbershop-style harmonies, these sweet songstresses put together their own rich renditions of country, jazz, rock and ballads. The chorus rehearses at the Jaggard United Methodist Church, but have traveled all over the country to compete and perform. They recently came

■ South: Elvis Impersonator Brad Crum The King of Rock and Roll is back by popular demand, and he’s just as talented as ever. A regular guest at People’s Choice, Crum wows crowds every year with his mirror-image impersonation of Elvis Presley. He’s got the pipes to match, too, with a vocal range that spreads across three and a half octaves. For those who remember what the King was really like, Crum is an unforgettable blast from the past. Fortunately, you have two chances to catch him perform at this year’s festival.
3 P.M.
■ North: Country Express Four guys with an undying love for country, Country Express is one of this year’s new arrivals. After dealing with the passing of their bassist in 2010, the quartet honors their late friend with each exciting performance. Country Express will close out this year’s festival with their classic country setlist, featuring songs like The Kentucky Headhunters’ “Walk Softly on this Heart of Mine” and Tommy Tutone’s “Jenny Jenny.”
