North Carolina: It’s like going home again I’ve lived the majority of my life in Maryland, but I was born a Tar Heel in what was then the small mountain college town of Boone, N.C. My father had been born on the other end of the state in the Edenton area. I returned to North Carolina for college, as do many in the Mid-Atlantic, and spent four years at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. So, while I haven’t lived in North Carolina for a long time, my roots run deep in the state and I’ve spent a lot of time there. A few years ago, our readers indicated an interest in learning more about The Tar Heel State. Many had vacationed on the Outer Banks or along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Others had children in one of the many colleges and universities in the state and wanted to know more about the area. Recreation News responded and we have produced special North Carolina sections in April and Au-

gust in each of the past three years. I confess I’ve especially enjoyed the opportunity to return to places that have been important in my life and to discover new destinations in the state as well. Our other writers have likewise enjoyed exploring North Carolina’s attractions, its natural beauty, and its culinary offerings. This month, we return to the Carolina Coast and explore the northernmost section of the Outer Banks and the state’s southernmost beach communities. Just west of the Outer Banks, we look at historic Edenton on the shores of Albemarle Sound. And, we check in with the areas along I-95 to find the locals’ favorite spots for authentic North Carolina barbeque. Perhaps the most surprising of the North Carolina destinations in this issue is Fayetteville. While many Americans realize Fayetteville is the home of the huge Fort Bragg, it’s a pleasure to learn of the area’s many attractions, its festivals, and its Civil War history. It is also home to some amazing military museums and events that resonate with anyone

who has served in uniform. Of course, the North Carolina section is only part of what you’ll find in this issue, with coverage stretching from State College, Pa., and Gettysburg to the lighthouses of the Chesapeake Bay and the Maryland Renaissance Festival. Enjoy the trip!

Finding your vacation gateway As I cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, that’s where it happens. At that point, I transition from the first part of my trip, leaving the office and familiar home turf, and officially enter that second portion of the trip, the “I am on the approach to my vacation” zone. It serves as a gateway, both geographically as well as psychologically. There are many such gateways I’ve recognized over the years. The aforementioned is my beach gateway, but I have a few mountain ones, too. Route 70 West, crossing Frederick, Md., is my gateway to parts of West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Heading south from I-66, the hustle and bustle of metropolitan D.C. gives way to farmlands and rolling hills as the Shenandoah Valley welcomes me, with mountains to the left and right, just like a pair of open arms. I can almost hear the mountains say, “We’ve been waiting for you.” Heading to points further north, it’s passing New York City. The interesting granite formations along the highway become less and less altered by graffiti artists as more and more tree-lined outcroppings conjure images of the beauty that lies beyond in New England. On journeys further out, different gateways exist. Airport traffic, parking shuttles, security check lines, baggage lines, and the general cattle rush clearly seem to represent the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day lives we are seeking to escape. At what point does your vacation really start to feel like a vacation? Is it when you get that first cocktail in a lounge or on the plane? Is it after landing? After claiming your luggage? For me, it’s after I arrive at my room, drop the luggage on the floor, and plunk my butt down on the bed, even if it’s just for a few moments. It’s a time of transition. It’s that gateway where

you depart the workaday humdrum and stress and glide into that relaxed zone where your daily menu contains tantalizing items to select from. Scientists still can’t exactly tell us why humans need to sleep or what happens in your sleep biologically. All they know is that, without enough, your health fails. Vacations, getaways, and time off hold similar qualities. How many times have you been consumed on a project and start to get less and less efficient until you stop, get up, walk away, and do anything to flush your mind so you can return with renewed clarity and energy? We all need that. Studies repeatedly show that those who fail to take vacations are substantially less productive workers than those who do. If that wasn’t the case, our capitalist system of commerce would have eliminated that facet of life long ago. So, when are you taking your next vacation or getaway? Where is your gateway, geographically or psychologically, and are you ready to cross over to the other side? Relaxation, adventure, fun, family time, and a host of positives await you. You need it. And so do your co-workers. Enjoy!

Exploring Maine, the Maritimes, and the Mid-Atlantic’s charms A recent trip to Maine and the Maritimes proved to be one of my most memorable summer vacations. Not only did we experience two nations in one vacation, but we also enjoyed scenic beauty at every turn, participated in some incredible activities, and had our fill of fresh lobster. After flying to Boston, we traveled to Ogunquit, Maine, where we spent two restful nights at the Cliff House soaking in the spectacular ocean views and the fresh air. Built in 1872 on 70 acres overlooking the Atlantic, the resort will undergo a complete transformation this winter before reopening in 2016. During the first evening of our visit, we enjoyed a stellar performance of Sister Act at the Ogunquit Playhouse, now in its 83rd season. Following a morning of leisure at the Cliff House Spa the second day, we continued our tour of Ogunquit with a Carol Timblin

Lobster Roll Crawl, thanks to Wells Seacoast Taxi. Our first stop was Lobster Shack in Perkins Cove, followed by Jake’s Seafood in Wells. Next was Shore Road Restaurant & Market in York Beach, with our final stop at Fox’s Lobster House, located across from the Nubble Lighthouse in Cape Neddick. We sampled chowders, lobster rolls with mayonnaise or butter on toasted buns, steamers and fried clams, and all the trimmings. Every place had both a unique ambience and presentation of food. The conclusion? Lobster doesn’t get any better — plus, the blueberry pie topped with blueberry ice cream was heavenly. On our way to our next stop in Portland, we traveled through some of Maine’s most beautiful coastal towns, including Kennebunkport, which was celebrating former first lady Barbara Bush’s 90th birthday. Our Portland headquarters was The Westin Portland Harborview, an ultra-modern hotel that occupies the site of The Eastland and still contains the old hotel’s original boilers. The Westin’s Top of the East rooftop lounge affords the best view of the city and the harbor. And, Congress Squared restaurant — also known as C2 —where we enjoyed champagne with fresh herbs and a fabulous chef’s table dinner, was outstanding. Portland’s Ambassador Pass is the best way to navigate the city and see many of its attractions. We took the trolley tour, which included Fort Williams Park and the Portland Head Light, but rain put an end to our plans to tour the harbor. However, it was a great afternoon for visiting the boyhood home of world-famous poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who penned Paul Revere’s Ride, Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha, and other classics. The house was built in 1785-86 by Gen. Peleg Wadsworth, the poet’s grandfather, who served in George Washington’s army. We ended our Portland visit with Maine Foodie Tours, enjoying a walking tour that showcased the city’s exciting restaurant scene. own The Song of the Paddle, met us with kayaks for a two-hour excursion around the harbor. Next, we enjoyed an Acadian lunch at The Hatfield House prepared by owner Laura Muise and her staff. The house was built in 1793 by Abigail Price, a freed slave. At the Historical Acadian Village overlooking Pubnico Harbour, which highlights how Acadians lived in the early 1900s, we sampled Rappie pie and learned about blacksmithing, boat building, lobster traps, and other crafts. That evening, we dined on Digby’s worldfamous scallops at Churchill’s Restaurant at Digby Pines Golf Resort & Spa. Opened in 1929, the resort offers golf, tennis, shuffleboard, croquet, swimming, kayaking, Aveda spa treatments, and other activities. Before our ferry crossing to New Brunswick the next day, we visited the Historic Gardens at Annapolis Royal, which are a tribute to Acadian history. We spent the last two days of our trip at Algonquin Resort, a site that sparkles with sheer luxury following a $30 million renovation. Built as a health resort in 1889 and located at St. Andrews-by-theSea, New Brunswick, it offers golf, tennis, a fitness center, swimming, fishing, ghost tours, spa treatments, and gourmet dining at Braxton’s. At low tide we drove across the ocean floor to Minister’s Island, the summer home of Sir William Van Horne, the Canadian Pacific Railway’s first president, and then took an Island Quest adventure in search of whales, harbor seals, and birds. All too soon it was time to return to Portland for our flights home. Along the way we stopped in Freeport, Maine, home of L.L. Bean, for one last lobster roll at a street stand. Around the Mid-Atlantic According to a Vatican news release, Pope Francis plans to spend five days, Sept. 22–27, in the United States visiting Washington, D.C., New York, and Philadelphia. While in Washington he will meet with President Barack Obama and address a joint session of Congress. In New York, he will address the United Nations General Assembly, attend a multi-religious service at the 9/11 Memorial Museum, and celebrate mass at Madison Square Garden. In Philadelphia he will greet organizers of the World Meeting of Families. The fourth annual Cape May Craft Beer & Crab Festival, featuring hard shell crabs, shrimp, craft beers, and music, will be held Aug. 8 at the Emlen Physik Estate. The event was named one of the Five Best New Jersey Summer Festivals. The family-friendly event will also feature lawn games and acrobats. Admission, parking, and trolley service are free. Outdoor adventures in the Sandhills and Fayetteville, N.C. I felt like Peter Pan, swooping through tall oak trees and above a waterfall, alighting on a platform high above the forest floor. I hadn’t been sprinkled with fairy dust; I was strapped into a secure harness and rolling along strong cables at ZipQuest Waterfall and Treetop Adventure in Fayetteville, N.C. With unique features such as the waterfall and swinging bridges to clamber across, ZipQuest ranks as one of the top zip lines in the country. If you crave more excitement after the

Shoot, climb, and jump

Zipquest offers a variety of day and moonlight adventures above ground. two-hour daytime adventure, try one of the “Zips by Moonlight” nighttime tours. (zipquest.com ) Mention Fayetteville and many people think immediately of Fort Bragg, the nation’s largest military base, so it’s natural that outdoor activities would be plentiful. Zip lining is just one of the outdoor activities you’ll find in Fayetteville and the surrounding Sandhills region. Laid back or high energy, you can choose from a menu that fits your desired adrenaline level.

On and around the water The Cape Fear River provides recreation on land and on the water. Walkers, hikers, bicyclists, dogwalkers, and joggers enjoy the Cape Fear River Trail. The 5.5-mile path takes advantage of the varied terrain, with portions covering gentle hills and others level. Bring a birders’ guidebook; the trail is home to 150 species of birds. An easier way to enjoy the plants and birds is at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden. Gently meandering paths link the “wild” areas of pine forests and river bank with themed gardens — daylilies, shade plants, herbs, butterfly — which are designed, in part, to give visitors ideas

A Cape Fear River Boat Cruise is a refreshing option on a muggy day. Captain Freddie Mims offers two- to four-hour cruises on his spacious pontoon boat. Flotilla commander of the local Coast Guard auxiliary, Mims knows the waterways, history, and ecology of the river. Cruises are by reservation, with a minimum of six paying adults and a maximum of 16 people for a cruise. Kids younger than 12 are free. Insider tip: Bring along a picnic to enjoy with the scenery. Both Fantasy Lake Water Park and Lake Waldo’s Beach Campground are all-day options. Fantasy Lake has a theme park atmosphere. The center of activity is the 6-acre, manmade, sand-bottom lake. It’s dotted with many water slides, teeter-totters, and monkey bars over the water, a water volleyball court, and paddleboats. There is a separate area for children 3 to 11, with scaled-down versions of the adult attractions. Safety is a priority, with a large staff of certified lifeguards. Lake Waldo’s Beach Campground is a pet-friendly RV park which welcomes day trippers. It is a lot smaller and quieter than Fantasy Lake. Lake Waldo is a natural lake with a broad,

Or, try out the Fort Bragg Clay Target Center, which proves that shooting those little clay discs is much more challenging than it looks. For climbers, the Sandhills are relatively flat. But, at the Climbing Place, rock climbers can belay and “chicken-wing.” It has 14,000 square feet of climbing surfaces for all ages and levels of experience. Enjoy the thrill of sky diving without actually jumping out of an airplane at Paraclete XP SkyVenture. With the clever use of a vertical wind tunnel, you’ll simulate a free-fall from 13,000 feet while never being more than a few yards above the floor. Flyers attend an orientation before suiting up and flying with instructors hovering alongside. The basic pack-

age includes two “free falls” of about a minute each, which is the length of a real sky dive. If you decide you want to try the real thing, they also offer tandem sky dive packages. With almost constant good weather and gently rolling terrain, the Sandhills are a natural location for golf courses. Duffers can tee off at 20 courses within an hour of Fayetteville. Designed by pros such as Davis Lane III and Stewart Gooden, they feature 300 uncontested holes on 19 miles of fairways. Plenty of accommodation/golf packages are available.

International focus Sept. 25–27 is the 37th annual International Folk Festival, where you can tour the world without leaving Fayetteville. More than a dozen nationalities demonstrate music, dances, and other cultural arts, while artisan vendors display traditional crafts and the International Café serves cuisine from around the world. When troops return to Fort Bragg from overseas deployments, they bring an appetite for foreign cuisines with them. As a result, Fayetteville has a tasty and varied dining scene. Italian, Mexican, and Greek menus are common, as are sports bars and “American casual.” Visitors also can look for authentic-quality pad thai and biryani or have fun building an entrée at a Mongolian barbecue. And, Fayetteville is one of the few cities with a restaurant serving West African specialties. Edenton’s allure lies in its history It’s easy to see why Edenton, N.C., has been dubbed one of the South’s prettiest towns. Its tree-lined streets, historic homes, walkable downtown, and location on Albemarle Sound invite visitors to enjoy its hospitality. Edenton’s allure also lies within its place in the history books. It’s a community of firsts, including the state’s first permanent settlement and first Colonial capital. North Carolina’s oldest known house, the Lane House, built in 1718, can be found here. And, the town lays claim to the first political action by women in the colonies. Joseph Hewes, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, also called this home. Within 1 square mile, Edenton, a four-hour drive from Washington, D.C., has more than 170 historically important buildings, many from the 18th and 19th centuries. Guided walking tours start at the Historic Edenton State Historic Site on North Broad Street. At this visitor information center, located in the 1892 Louis F. Zeigler House, you can view a short informational video and exhibits on the town’s history. Daily tours visit several historic sites, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (circa 1736), North Carolina’s second-oldest church; the James Iredell Sr. House (circa 1773), once home to a justice of the first U.S. Supreme Court; and the Cupola House (circa 1758), a Jacobean-style home with an octagonal cupola and Colonial Revival flower gardens. A tour highlight is the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse, the country’s oldest courthouse still in use. “Edenton was originally known as the Town on Queen Anne’s Creek,” explained Keith Furlough, a historic site interpreter. “After the death of Charles Eden, North Carolina’s first governor, the name was changed to

Edenton. It was one of the first four towns established in the state.” Edenton Historic Trolley Tours depart from the waterfront near the Penelope Barker House, which serves as the Edenton Welcome Center. In 1774, Penelope Barker rallied 50 local women to boycott English tea and other high-priced goods in what became known as the Edenton Tea Party. The narrated trolley tour travels by many of the same sites as the walking tour, but also through the Edenton Cotton Mill Historic District, consisting of 57 early-20th-century millworkers’ houses, an office building, factory, and church. On weekends, the Edenton Cotton Mill Museum of History is open in the former mill office with displays of artifacts, photographs, and news clippings about the mill (which operated for more than a century), the mill village, and restoration efforts.

Edenton’s maritime heritage After the 50-minute trolley tour, meander through Colonial Waterfront Park, where interpretive plaques tell the stories of the town’s maritime history and role in the Maritime Underground Railroad. One of those Underground Railroad stories belongs to Harriet Jacobs. Born a slave, she escaped in 1842 via this network after hiding in her grandmother’s attic for years to avoid an abusive master. Insider tip: Ask at the visitor center about the Harriet Jacobs’ tour. The Roanoke River Lighthouse, built in 1886, was moved from its Roanoke River location to the Edenton waterfront in 1995. It is a screwpile lighthouse, a type familiar to lighthouse lovers in the Chesapeake Bay region. The one-and-a-half-story Arts and Crafts bungalow, open for tours, is furnished with circa-1915 mailorder items. From the waterfront, head up Broad Street, the town’s main street, to shop at Edenton Bay Trading Company and other boutique shops, or to catch a movie at the restored 1929 Taylor Theater. Finding the best barbecue along I-95 in North Carolina Barbecue is one of our few truly American dishes. It wasn’t brought over from someone’s homeland or carried here on a wave of immigration. The original word may be French or Spanish, and the dish itself might have originated in Haiti more than 300 years ago, but barbecue reaches its absolute pinnacle in Eastern North Carolina. For many people, “barbecue” refers to an outdoor cooking contraption of some kind, usually fired with charcoal, wood, or gas. In Eastern North Carolina, however, “barbecue” refers to the meat itself, not the thing the meat gets cooked on. The meat is most usually pork (read that as “always, except for the most extreme circumstances”), slow-cooked on a rack over a smoky heat source. Hardwood coals are the benchmark for heat and fruitwood for smoke. Correctly cooked barbecue can be pulled apart with a fork; the interior meat shows a creamy white or slightly tan color and bursts with aromatic juices. The flavor is smoky and strong but pleasant and almost sweet. For folks driving I-95 through North Carolina, eating barbecue can also be a welcome distraction, a recess, and reason to pause the journey. From north to south, we have polled the locals, and these are their choice spots for dining on authentic Eastern North Carolina barbecue.

Life’s just a laid-back beach in Brunswick County, N.C. When the Provision Company restaurant opened in Holden Beach, N.C., in 2002, the manager stuck a few old license plates up on the walls as impromptu decorations. Thirteen years later, tags from every state but Rhode Island adorn the walls of this laid-back bar and restaurant. The far-reaching popularity is well-deserved. Try the conch fritters, adventurous and delicious as an appetizer, then move on to the customer favorite — the shrimp burger. Sip a craft brew and watch the shrimp boats on the IntraCoastal Waterway, then wander down to the dock and book your own boat ride for a look at the beautiful homes situated on both sides of the waterway. Holden Beach, a six-hour drive from the D.C. area, is just one of the five barrier islands that make up 45 miles of wide beaches in Brunswick County. The others are Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle, Oak Island, and Bald Head Island. All have avoided commercialization, yet still hold enough

activities to keep the attention of vacationers, including families.

Small town, big party Get out of the sun and into the town of Southport at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Southport has a 200-year history as a small maritime community that celebrates Fourth of July in a big way. In Colonial times, ships anchored in the harbor and fired their cannons. Today, more than 50,000 people descend on the town to celebrate Old Glory and independence. Southport was also the filming location for the romantic thriller Safe Haven, adapted in 2013 from the

Nicholas Sparks novel. You can take a walking tour from the Southport terminal and ferry, and stroll to familiar sites from the movie with the online Safe Haven sites tour. (visitnc. com/story/safe-haven-movie-sites) For an on-the-water experience in Southport, explore the marshes, estuaries, black water rivers, and ancient cypress swamps via kayak with the Adventure Kayak Company.

Where to stay There are a few hotels on the islands — the Sunset Inn in Sunset Beach offers a bed-and-breakfast atmosphere, and the homemade breakfast bread is amazing — but most visitors to Brunswick County stay in vacation rental homes. Families and groups can get a great deal, especially if they book ahead of time, but spontaneous decisions can work as well, so check for sudden openings if you can pack your bags quickly. Insider tip: Local real estate agents say visitors can get a good deal on waterfront vacation rental homes on the many canals on the Intracoastal Waterway side of several islands. Boaters have a handy dock and nonboaters can enjoy the yachts and other boats moving up and down the waterway. Silver Coast Winery is a good place to escape into the woods on Ocean Isle. Adventures for the mellow and the brave The musings penned by visitors into notebooks inside the legendary Kindred Spirit mailbox on Bird Island range from the enthusiastic to the heartfelt. From the access point on Sunset Beach, the mailbox is a 1-mile walk, run, or bicycle ride (the beach is wide, hard-packed, and can hold a standard bike). The Shallotte River Swamp Park Adventure opened this year and offers a variety of challenging fun from canopy tours to an 860-foot zip line to a high ropes course. “If you want a day off from the beach, we’re the ‘other thing to do,’” said the park’s George Howard, “and we don’t just have one activity, but a whole day’s worth.” (shallotteriverswamppark. com) For another rigorous adventure, climb the fisherman’s ladder of the 153-foot Oak Island Lighthouse, built in 1957. It’s not your typical lighthouse tour because, instead of a spiral staircase, you climb a series of ship’s ladders — 131 rungs in all — for an outside balcony view. Rumor has it that about one in 10 people “chicken out,” but climbers as young as 9 and as old as 87 have successfully made it to the top. Will you?

Currituck County: Go wild in the ‘Land of the Wild Geese’ Bouncing along in an open-air safari truck across the sand in Currituck County, N.C., Terry Rowell, a guide for Back Country Safari Tours, demonstrates his skill at both storytelling and driving. As his passengers search for wild horses, he shares a mixture of Currituck’s history and its current juicy local news. Over the course of the meandering afternoon safari, he also rescues a rat snake, fishes a perfectly intact whelk shell from the incoming tide, and calls a naturalist colleague to get the scoop on where the stallions and their mares might be hanging out that day. The beach and unpaved sand tracks in this part of the county are the treasure of the Corolla area, the northernmost part of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. “Currituck means ‘Land of the Wild Geese,’” explained Rowell, noting it’s a word derived from the Algonquian Indian word “carotank.” Indeed, hunting geese and ducks for profit and sport was an important part of the area’s history. But today, in a nature preserve, visitors pass the hauntingly beautiful trunks of the cedar trees that stood here 850 years ago. As the oceans and sand dunes migrate and resettle, nothing ever stays the same here, except for a spirit of wildness that will leave you vowing to return.

Corolla’s local people know the land the best, and there’s a story behind many quirky personalities. In the tiny community of Carova — accessible only via unpaved beach — the only real driveway is paved with aluminum cans. “When the owner is ready to repave, he just puts cans down and drives over ’em,” explained Rowell. Down the road (or, better put, down the sand), we see the Dennis Anderson house. Anderson is the owner of the Grave Digger monster truck and his crew helped design vehicles for Back Country Safari Tours. His house is surprisingly modest except for the color: a swagged-out bright green that exactly matches Grave Digger, the truck that Anderson pieced together from old parts back in 1982. Also in Corolla is Steamers, a restaurant where the chefs are personable, talented people who offer what they call a “takeout gourmet.” Steamer pots to go, they can be enjoyed at a beach house, on the dock, at a picnic table, or in the back of a monster truck. Or, sit down inside, where you can eat steamed shrimp and grab a cold beverage from the fridge. While most accommodations are vacation home rentals in this area, the Inn at Corolla Light provides updated rooms on Currituck Sound with

Plenty of country charm to greet you in Central Pennsylvania County fairs are a perfect slice of Americana and perhaps no state does them better than Pennsylvania. After all, there are more than 100 agriculture-themed fairs in the state. You can find 4-H competitions, tractor pulls, animal shows, and midway rides at every turn. The local fair is woven into the fabric of rural life that still dominates

much of Pennsylvania. With agriculture as the state’s leading industry — and tourism not too far behind — it makes sense that county fairs attract a faithful following. “It is something that pulls people together every year,” said Vicki Brown, who serves on the Huntingdon County Fair Board. “It gives families the chance to be in touch

with agriculture.” Much of Pennsylvania is blessedly rural. No trip to State College is complete without a stop at the Penn State Berkey Creamery for a scoop or two of a favorite flavor. Yes, it’s a full-fledge ice cream shop, but behind the scenes, students working in and around the creamery are learning the latest in food science. Penn State also trains would-be ice cream entrepreneurs on the tried and true methods of marketing and making ice cream. “One of the best things about our area is that visitors can enjoy a more metropolitan flare in the greater State College area — including a variety of cultural and culinary offerings. Living life at the fair Perhaps the best way to experience the country charm of Centre County is to spend a day at the Centre County Grange Fair. Each fair in Pennsylvania has its own unique twist on entertainment. What sets the Grange Fair apart from the rest are the tents. The Grange Fair is the largest agriculture encampment in the nation. More than 2,000 people either set up tents or RVs and live there for the entire week of the fair. Tent sites are hot commodities, and are often passed down in wills from generation to generation. For the Grange Fair faithful, the event feels like a family reunion.

This year’s fair, which runs Aug. 21–29, features nightly grandstand entertainment of country, bluegrass, and contemporary music. Rides on the midway are open throughout the afternoon and evening, and visitors can watch Centre County kids and adults compete for bragging rights for having the best Holstein, tastiest homemade desert, or best aim in the horseshoe pitching contest. Just down the road in Huntingdon County, fairgoers are also treated to classic fair entertainment including draft horse pulls, animal competitions, and a demolition derby. The Huntingdon County Fair, held Aug. 9–15, also features nightly musical acts and the crowning of the fair queen. “I’ve been going to this fair for the past 60 years,” Vicki Brown said. “It’s all about getting together with people, the excitement of bringing a 4-H project, the fun of friendly competition, and the good-old fair food.” The Huntingdon County Fairgrounds is also home to a farmers’ museum that traces the agriculture and rural life history of the region. The museum, open during the fair and every Tuesday the rest of the year, has an extensive display on how families tilled the ground and tended to day-to-day tasks a generation ago.

David Wills House, where President Abraham Lincoln put the finishing touches on the Gettysburg Address. “These tours are a great way to learn where everything is, especially if you’re visiting Gettysburg for the first time,” said Korczyk. If you’re planning to do any shopping, it’s also a good idea to take one of these tours early in your visit, because coupons in the tour’s program guide provide extra savings at all of the locations in case you want to go back for a full meal or take home some delicious gifts. Some of us use it just as a place to sleep, shower, and change. Others find it a relaxing refuge or family meeting point. Still others feel a need for the window at least for day and night orientation. We like the fresh air a balcony provides and find it a peaceful place to begin our morning, right after room service delivers our coffee, danish, salmon, and bagels. ◆ Do you want to be in the front, back, or center of the ship? We see two main considerations here. First, are you prone to sea sickness? If so, the center has less motion. Consider a seesaw — the ends move a lot, the center, not as much. The center of the ship can be convenient to elevator banks and balance the distance from front to back, so you are never too far from your room. On the other hand, we’ve had a room convenient to the centrum and the glass elevators, but when we made it an early night, we kept hearing the music funneling up through the lobby. While that’s a minor annoyance, it did stick in our minds for future reference. ◆ Top or bottom — what’s a better choice? Just like the seesaw illustration on front versus back, there is a pendulum effect when it comes to top versus bottom. In general, lower levels will have less detectable motion for the seasick-prone than the upper floors. To a lesser degree, interior rooms will have minimally less motion. Newer, larger ships also tend to use stabilizing technologies in conjunction with their size to minimize motion. Consider this when booking your ship. If motion sickness is not a primary concern, or can be handled with medicine or in other ways, there are additional considerations in the highversus low-deck decision. Just like in a building, upper views are typically better than lower-level ones. If you have a balcony or window, consider this factor. Convenience is nice, too. We like balcony rooms near the rear and find it convenient to just run up or down one or two flights of steps to snag a snack, hit the restaurant, or return to our room from our favorite pool in the back of the ship for that forgotten book, hat, or suntan lotion. ◆ There are additional options specific to each ship.

People have been fascinated with lighthouses for centuries: Architects admire their structure; artists capture them in sculpture, canvas, and photos; adventurers love to climb them. The Chesapeake Chapter of the United States Lighthouse Society, in partnership with lighthouse organizations throughout Maryland, bid enthusiasts to “See the Lights” during the 10th Anniversary Lighthouse Challenge. The event takes place Sept. 19–20 in the form of a driving tour of the state’s land-accessible lighthouses. These include the Choptank River Replica, Concord Point, Cove Point, Drum Point, Fort Washington, Hooper Straight, Piney Point, Point Lookout, the Seven Foot Knoll, and the Lightship Chesapeake. There is no fee to take the challenge. However, some of the lighthouses have a climbing fee, and some are in state or national parks, which may have an entrance fee. The chapter posts a list of

anticipated fees on its website, as well as a driving map to each location. A complimentary souvenir will be handed out at each lighthouse, whether or not the participants choose to climb it. “The challenge brings participants to the lighthouse from all over the country — 27 states were represented one year,” said Karen Rosage, the event chair. “It’s an educational and fun-filled event as folks travel around the bay. If they visit all (of the sites) they get a special souvenir proclaiming that they’ve ‘seen the lights.’” In addition, the organizers are offering three bonus sites. These are the Sandy Point Shoal, the Blackistone Lighthouse Replica, and Millers Island Lighthouse (which will be viewed from the Dock of the Bay Restaurant in Sparrows Point). Other lighthouse festivals and events take place throughout the country for those who might want to plan a vacation around them. Hike, bike and swim The Breakwater Junction Biking/Hiking Trail is an historic rail trail connecting Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. Few visitors realize that just beyond the hustle and bustle of the outlets there is all of this pristine coastal beauty to explore. Named after the rail line that once ran between Lewes and Rehoboth and carried passengers to the Methodist resort camps along the Atlantic Ocean, the hiking/biking/strolling trail runs for approximately 5 miles through coastal marshes, woods, and farm fields. We had a nice balcony on an upper level with plenty of privacy, but it was directly below where they stored the lounge chairs, so each morning we were greeted by the sound of moving furniture. Similarly, never get a room above or below a bar, nightclub, galley, or public restroom. Remember, also, that not all rooms are available as triple or quad occupancy. After considering these points, keep in mind

Register by Aug. 31 and pay $65, or between Sept. 1â&#x20AC;&#x201C;19 for $75. The fee includes SAG support, T-shirt, lunch, maps, and rest stop refreshments. The rest stops are fantastic this year

Six themed weekends All nine weekends of the Maryland Renaissance Festival are full of performances recreating the 16thcentury English village, but six of the weekends include additional performers or special guests in special themed weekends. Children’s Weekend is Aug.

29–30. One child age 7 through 15 is admitted free with each adult ticket purchased. Children 6 and younger are always free. The Saturday Singles Party is Sept. 5, where visitors can meet other singles and join in special activities. Sept. 6 is the Sunday Renewal of Vows Ceremony, which is open to all. Sept. 7 is Seniors Day. All wise elders 62 and older are admitted free on Labor Day. A Celtic Celebration is planned for Sept. 12–13. Celtic music will be featured throughout the realm at various stages and taverns, and caber toss demonstrations will be happening on the joust tournament field. Pirate Weekend, Sept. 19–20, allows visitors to enjoy rousing special guests, as well as the raucous Pyrates Royal on stage and in taverns. Show up as your favorite pirate. And, Sept. 26–27, the international recording artists Mediaeval Baebes return by popular request for special performances at the Blackfriar’s Theatre.

In the midst of world-renown Shenandoah Valley agriculture, “locally sourced” and “farm to table” have special significance. International influences enhance the region’s gastronomic palette, with 52 languages and all colors and ethnicities present in the melting pot. The city of just more than 50,000 people supports 60-plus locally owned restaurants, along with an array of national chains. More than 15 food-related businesses, including a year-round farmers market, specialty wine and beer shops, food tours, and cooking classes, add to the mix. Perhaps more important than numbers, the food and beverage industry is an active part of the Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, revitalizing the historic city center and transforming it into a destination for culinary tourists. The Harrisonburg Farmers Market, open Tuesdays and Saturdays year-round, could be the phoenix’s nest — the core of the newly risen Culinary District. In an open-air but permanent pavilion, market offerings range from seasonal farm products and foods to fine art, soaps, beadwork, and other crafts. Traditional Salvadoran pupusas line up with Belgian waffles, next to craft-roasted coffee, fresh baked goods, and local cheeses. A quick walk from the market, the Ice House

stands as another pillar of Harrisonburg’s culinary establishment. Inside the repurposed industrial building, Black Sheep Coffee and Brewing shares space with upscale shops. Black Sheep is the archetypical coffee shop, serving fresh-brewed coffees and teas along with fresh baked goods, made in house. Pale Fire brews some 3,000 barrels each year of up to 10 different flavors, and its newly opened brew pub features local produce on the menu.

Local is even in the name The Local Chop and Grill House even has “local” in its name. The menu focuses on “fresh, hand-selected, local, and seasonal foods prepared with progressive flair.” Inside Harrisonburg’s old City Produce Exchange building, the restaurant capitalizes on a vintage atmosphere that includes large wooden doors, an ornate, angled staircase, brick interior walls, and rustic beams. Chef Ryan Zale works with regional producers, selecting by hand many of the foods used in his kitchen. He does his own butchering and makes cheeses and charcuterie. True to the chop house genre, Local serves quality steaks and chops, organically raised poultry, house-made charcuterie and cheeses, organically grown seasonal produce, and fresh baked goods. Food.Bar.Food, one of Harrisonburg’s more adventurous restaurants, serves “Global Comfort Food ... exploring a broad spectrum of styles, traditions, and flavors.” The decor is as creative and attractive as the food and weekly cocktail specials. Taking full advantage of a converted garage, Food.Bar.Food subscribes to the genteel Southern tradition that brunch should be huge, with special dishes and brunch cocktails infused with international flavors. The sparkling cocktails with frozen fruit are a house specialty. Two common threads tie together many of Harrisonburg’s newer restaurants: an emphasis on using locally produced ingredients whenever pos-

sible and repurposing once-thriving downtown commercial space. But, restaurants are only half of the equation. The region’s legion of specialty producers is the other. Three Brothers Brewing is one of a half dozen breweries, wineries, or cideries that quench the region’s thirst. Visiting the brewery can be an education in craft brewing. The tour is geared to visitors’ interests. And, if you need a nosh to go along with the brew, one of Harrisonburg’s armada of food trucks is conveniently parked just outside.

Ice cream and more Up the valley from Harrisonburg, Mount Crawford Creamery is an opportunity for true foodies to actually see the cow that produced the milk they are buying. Milk products do not come any fresher than immediately from the source. Mount Crawford’s milk is simply delicious, even for devout lacto-phobes. Along with several kinds of milk, look for traditional buttermilk, ice cream mix, heavy cream, butter, and other products from regional agriculture. And, don’t forget to visit the cows and their calves. While generally sought for its scent, lavender appears as a flavoring in a number of recipes and foods. The White Oak Lavender Farm stocks a cupboard full of lavender vinegars, jams and jellies, spices, and baking mixes. In the midst of fields of growing lavender, the farm invites visitors to explore the grounds and the petting area, life-size checkerboard, duck pond, labyrinth, distillery, drying barn, and additional gardens.

Beachcombers vie for prizes at glass festival That interesting piece of glass you found washed up at the beach just might be worth $1,000 if you win the coveted “Shard of the Year” competition at the North American Sea Glass Festival, being held Aug. 29–30 in Ocean City, Md. Sharp-eyed beachcombers can vie for cash prizes in several categories at the festival, which will be held at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center. Nearly 60 sea glass artists from a number of states will exhibit and sell their work, and collectors, novices, speakers, and authors are expected to be on hand. Last year’s festival in Cape May, N.J., drew 5,000 attendees. “It’s definitely the premier event for sea glass for the year,” said Valerie Weston, of the North American Sea Glass Association, the group that originated the festival 10 years ago. Weston said the association was formed to educate the public about the differences between genuine and artificial sea glass. Weston said genuine sea glass evolves from household or manufacturing trash that ends up in the ocean. Over years, the glass bottles or dishes break into shards that are smoothed and rounded by tumbling over and over in the ocean’s waves. The result is beautiful sea glass in many colors and patterns with a frosted-looking appearance. The glass can be found on beaches around the world. Artificial sea glass is manufactured, but experts know how to distinguish it from the real thing. “So far they (the manufacturers) haven’t been able to duplicate Mother Nature,” Weston said. From the sea glass, artists craft jewelry in unique designs. Prices can range from $20 to $2,000, according to Weston, an artist who runs Suncoast Sea Glass in Tampa, Fla. The glass also is used to create home decor items, such as mosaics, lanterns, and decorated mirrors. It also turns up in marbles, toys, bottle stoppers, and buttons. Besides exhibitors’ booths, the event will include lectures on the historical significance of Delaware sea glass by shipwreck treasure hunter Bill Winkler Sr.; tips on identifying sea pottery by Patricia Samford, of the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab in St. Leonard, Md.; and stories about sea-glass hunting in Greece by Christeena HockinMinopetros.

In addition, collectors are invited to display their pieces in a “no-sell zone,” and the public is encouraged to bring in shards for identification by experts. Admission is $5, and free for children younger than 12. Some of the proceeds will go toward shoreline conservation, preservation, and beautification. What is the lure of sea glass? Weston believes it’s partly “the mystery of the ocean,” the delight of finding things on the shore, and the opportunity to make new creations out of old debris. “Once it tickles your collector gene, it’s a fun thing to do,” said Weston. The hobby is also free, she pointed out.

New and improved Are you intrigued by inventions and inventors? Delve into the subject at the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation Hall in Washington, D.C. The new permanent gallery opened recently at the National Museum of American History. The signature exhibition, Places of Invention, looks at locations in America that became centers of invention and the stories of the dreamers behind the innovations. Examples include the rise of the personal computer in Silicon Valley in the 1970s and ’80s; hip-hop’s birth in the Bronx, N.Y., in the 1970s; cardiac innovations in Medical Alley, Minn., in the 1950s; precision manufacturing in Hartford, Conn., in the late 1800s; Technicolor in Hollywood in the 1930s; and clean-energy innovations in Fort Collins, Colo., happening today. A large interactive map invites visitors to contribute their own stories of innovative communities. The “Inventive Minds” section spotlights American inventors and the work of the Lemelson Center. There also will be public programs and research opportunities. A popular attraction is the handson Draper Spark! Lab. Children ages 6 to 12 can work their way through the invention process from start to finish.

Brew Skies Festival quenches thirst for bluegrass music Mix live music, craft beer, and beautiful scenery and what do you get? The Brew Skies Festival, Aug. 21–22 in West Virginia’s Canaan Valley. Heading into its fourth year, the festival takes place at Timberline Four Seasons Resort near the town of Davis, less than three hours from Washington, D.C., using U.S. Route 48. Both national and regional bands will present 25 performances over the two-day period. Headliners include guitarists Paul Barrère and Fred Tackett of the band Little Feat, the Larry Keel Experience, Woody Pines, and If Birds Could Fly. West Virginia favorites include Qiet, The Soul Miners, and LocalMotive. Bluegrass will be paramount, but there will be a wide range of musical genres, including blues and rock, according to Stephen Dilettoso, of Mountain State Brewing Compay, which sponsors the event. Performances take place outdoors on the main stage behind the lodge at the bottom of the ski slope and on a secondary stage called the Beer Garden. Bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the music, which will be continual. The festival will be a good chance to sample

West Virginia’s craft beers — which are products of a growing industry — because it falls during the first-ever West Virginia Craft Beer Week. Dilettoso said the state now has 11 breweries, with five more on the drawing board. At least nine of the breweries will be represented at the event. The 10-year-old Mountain State Brewing Company in Thomas is one of the biggest and oldest microbreweries in the state, according to Dilettoso. A kids’ section will be available during the family-friendly event, which will also include artisans and food vendors. Lodging options are available at canaanvalley.org. The Canaan Valley Resort will have shuttle service to the festival. Advance tickets are $55 for a weekend pass or $35 for a day pass. At the gate, prices rise to $60 for a weekend pass or $40 for a day pass. Dilettoso said city dwellers will enjoy visiting the Canaan Valley, where the high elevation in the Allegheny Mountains often means cooler temperatures. Timberline Resort is known for its ski slopes, but has activities year-round. The region is full of opportunities for hiking, biking, golfing, horseback riding, fishing, boating, and whitewater rafting.
