You are on an island in the middle of a lake. The lake is in a remote part of the country and there has never been a bridge connecting the island to the mainland. Every day a tractor and wagon gives hay rides around the island. Puzzled as to how the tractor had gotten onto the island, you ask around and find out that the tractor was not transported to the island by boat or by air. Nor was it built on the island. Explain how the tractor got there? Look For The Answer In This Week’s Edition!

Flag Day: 5 Interesting Facts About the U.S. Flag
1. On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to adopt the official flag of the United States, which had 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 stars in a blue field. That same day, the Continental Congress also established the Continental Army. 2. The true origins of the flag’s design is unknown. According to American folklore, during the American Revolution, George Washington commissioned Betsy Ross to design and sew the flag for the new nation. However, historians have been unable to prove the story to be true. Nevertheless, the legend made Ross a patriotic icon during the late 19th century. Also muddling the facts are the claims by Francis Hopkinson, an author and signer of the Declaration of Independence, who is also said to have designed the first official American flag. 3. Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin school teacher, lead the first formal observance of Flag Day in 1885. He spent many years of his life calling for the annual observance and has been dubbed the Father of Flag Day. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day, but it wasn’t until 1949 that Congress passed legislation declaring it a national holiday. However, Flag Day is not a federal holiday. In fact, Pennsylvania is the only state to observe it as a legal state holiday. 4. There have been 27 official versions of the U.S. flag since 1777. Today’s 50-star version was created by a 17-year-old high school student in 1958 in Ohio for a class project. He got a B- on the project. 5. There are six American flags planted on the moon by the crews of Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17. Of the six, five are still standing. The first flag, planted by Neil Armstrong, was blown over by the exhaust during liftoff of Apollo 11.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Flavor, convenience and the fun factor drives thousands of home cooks each year to fire up their backyard grills. Preparing meals over an open fire imparts smoky flavors to various foods, and can be a low-fat, quick method of cooking. Cooking over an open flame also can be dangerous.

Preventing flare-ups Although many consumer grills are designed to prevent flare-ups, they can still happen. Here are some ways to reduce the risk of high flames and overcooked foods. • Trim as much fat as possible without sacrificing flavor. Excess fat that drips down into the coals can ignite easily. Consider using lean meats in burger patties. • Limit use of sauces and marinades. Sugary or oily marinades and sauces may be more prone to ignition. Try dry rubs and then add a small amount of sauce when the heat is low during the final minutes of cooking. • Wait to grill until windy conditions abate. Oxygen fuels fires, and wind that can channel between the grates may cause bigger flames. Try to keep the grill away from windy areas, or wait until breezes die down before continued on page 11

How to prevent or safely extinguish grill flare-ups continued from page 10 cooking, if possible. • The grill manufacturer CharBroil advises leaving the lid open when searing fatty foods. • Keep a clean grill. Remove residue from the belly of the grill and clean the grates after each meal is made. Handle flare-ups with care If flames do rise, keep calm and try these techniques. • Leave room to move foods on the grill. Keep empty spots on the grill where food can be moved if a flare-up occurs. • Turn off the burners. When using a propane grill, turn off the gas when flare-ups begin. Then move the food to another area. • Starve the fire. If possible, close all vents and the lid to deplete the oxygen supply to the fire. • Smother the flames. Never use water on a grill, as any existing grease can pop and explode when it comes into contact with water. This Open also may cause flames to spread. Instead, use baking 24 Hours

Protect eyes from ultraviolet rays ing long hours at the beach or skiing without proper eye protection. UVB rays cause photokeratitis, and these rays can burn the cornea, potentially causing pain and temporary vision loss.
Photokeratitis Excessive amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time can cause photokeratitis, which is equivalent to a sunburn of the eye. Photokeratitis may occur after spend-
Pterygium Pterygium is a growth that forms on the outer portion of the eye, or the cornea and conjunctiva. The World Health Organization says that prolonged UV exposure can contribute to this condition. Pterygium may extend over the cornea and reduce vision, requiring surgical removal.
Macular degeneration According to the American Optometric Association, macular degeneration is a deterioration of the part of the retina that is responsible for sharp, central vision. In addition to UV rays, chronic exposure to shorter-wavelength visible blue and violet light can be harmful to the retina. The sun and many artificial light sources, such as LEDs and smartphones, emit blue light. Some blue light can be beneficial, but some can be harmful to the eyes. Lenses that absorb harmful blue light or block it can prevent retinal damage.
Cataracts UV exposure also can contribute to the formation of cat-

Thanks to increased awareness about the perils of exposure to ultraviolet rays and skin damage, a greater number of people routinely apply sunscreen before spending time outdoors. But while people take steps to prevent sunburns, skin cancer and premature aging, they may fail to consider that UV rays also can damage their eyes. Just as people protect their skin from the sun, so, too, should they safeguard their eyes. Prevent Blindness America warns that the sun is comprised of UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays may hurt central vision by damaging the macula, or a part of the retina at the back of the eye. UVB rays typically affect the front part of the eye or the lens and cornea. The following are some common eye conditions that can be linked to exposure to UV rays.

Today’s automobiles come with more gadgets than ever before. New car buyers can now choose from a host of amenities geared toward making roads easier to navigate and long trips more comfortable. Whereas nonessential amenities once cost buyers a substantial amount of money, nowadays many auto manufacturers include options once considered luxuries in their standard packages, meaning more drivers have the chance to enjoy their new vehicles in style. While not all amenities are free, and some may still cost drivers a considerable amount of money, the following are a handful of features drivers may find too irresistible to ignore. • Satellite radio: Satellite radio has been around for awhile, but only recently did it begin to become a standard offering in new 220 6th St Clymer vehicles. a deal where their initial satellite radio subscription, whether it’s a few months or a full year, is included in the cost of the vehicle, while others may need to foot the fill for their subscriptions from jump street. But many new cars are satellite-compatible, which is good news to drivers who want to expand their musical horizons beyond the offerings of their local terrestrial stations. • Television: The vehicles of today often mimic mobile entertainment systems, and no such system is complete without television. Built-in televisions are nothing new, and many a parent has expressed gratitude that in-car televisions and DVD players can serve as mobile babysitters when taking the kids on long road trips. But some auto manufacturers have begun to offer broadcast television in their vehicles, which is made possible by a built-in television antenna that is capable of picking up nearby channels. • Massaging seats: Heated seats have a reputation of being a luxury well worth the extra investment when continued on page 17

Fun amenities to consider for your next vehicle continued from page 16 buying a new car. But motorists with some extra cash to spend may want to consider massaging seats. Such seats are typically limited to the backseats, but they work in similar fashion to massaging armchairs. Passengers or even drivers taking a break on a long road tip can jump into the back of their cars, recline the backseat and then enjoy a massage to iron out all those aches and pains that developed over the last several hours traversing the highways. • Adaptive lights: If you’re the type of driver who prefers his or her amenities be more about function than luxury, then adaptive lights might be the perfect feature for you. Adaptive lights may swivel as an automobile turns a corner, making it easier for drivers to see. Some adaptive headlights also can sense darkness, protecting drivers who may be distracted by the amenities inside their vehicles and forget to turn their lights on the moment twilight arrives or the sun sets. Today’s automobiles are a testament to innovation, and drivers may find that certain amenities make driving more enjoyable than ever before.

While many cyclists focus on safety and strictly adhere to the rules of the road, some cyclists engage in behavior that may go against the flow of traffic or is downright dangerous. The League of American Bicyclists reminds riders that whether in a car or on a bike, the rules and rights remain the same. It's necessary to obey traffic signals and stop signs.

is a low-impact way to exercise. Having a backyard pool makes swimming and outdoor fun that much easier. Although exact numbers are difficult to come by, various sources indicate there are approximately 4.5 million residential swimming pools across the United States. While it once was relatively rare to find a backyard swimming pool in Canada, things have changed — especially in Quebec. No other province comes close to matching Quebec for backyard pools, which has well over 300,000 backyard pools, more than Ontario (which has five million more people). Quebec also has more pools per capita than almost anywhere else in North America according to numbers compiled by Pool & Spa Marketing magazine. Pools can be enjoyable places to gather and make for the focal points of yards, but they require careful use so fun is not overshadowed by tragedy. Unfortunately, young children have the highest risk of pool injury or drowning, with more than 200 youngsters drowning in swimming pools each year. The American Red Cross and National Swimming Pool Foundation® have partnered to educate home pool users. The following guidelines are important when adults and children are enjoying the pool. • Create barriers. Preventing accidental MADE IN THE USA drowning means removing easy access to pools. Pools should be Sales/Service ALL Brands surrounded by secure of Doors & Openers 724-479-8687 fencing with an automatically latching gate. Extra precautions like installing a safety cover on inground pools and removing or securing ladders when the pool is not in use can help as well. • Establish rules. Each pool owner should establish their own set of rules for the pool. These can include “no running around the pool,” “no diving in a shallow pool” and “no riding toys at poolside.” Pool owners can customize rules as they pertain to safety issues in their yards. • Maintain constant supervision. People of any age can drown. That is why it’s always safest for swimmers to swim with a buddy or with someone watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics says an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach when infants and toddlers are swimming. This is known as “touch supervision.” For older children, an adult should be paying constant attention and remain free from distractions, like talking on the phone, socializing, tending to household chores, or drinking alcohol. • Use approved flotation devices. Individuals who do not know how to swim should rely on a Coast Guard-approved flotation device. Water wings and general pool floats are not adequate, especially in situations that requires someone to be saved. • Take swimming lessons. Knowing how to swim will not entirely remove the risk of drowning, but it certainly can reduce it. Many swim programs teach water survival skills as well as general swimming techniques. Fun around the pool is par for the course come summer. But fun must be balanced with safety when swimming.

Weeding through lawncare service options According to Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, lawns take up 40.5 million acres and individuals spend $30 billion on average for lawn and garden upkeep in the United States alone. People certainly love their lawns and often wonder if those lawns are best left in the hands of professionals. The National Gardening Association states that 72 percent of American households do some work in their yards. However, a growing number of homeowners also hire others to make their lawns look pristine. Homeowners who want to leave lawncare to the pros can consider the following factors as they search for a company that best suits their needs. • Lawncare services that are licensed and insured provide more peace of mind to homeowners than the alternatives. Should an injury occur on your property while work is being done, an insured business will be able to take care of it and you won’t be liable. • Businesses that belong to a professional or trade organization invest in continually learning about the evolution of lawncare. This increases the likelihood that member companies will be up-to-date regarding the latest, most environmentally friendly lawncare techniques. Participation in a trade organization also may indicate education in the landscaping field. • Research reviews before hiring. Although public reviews may not paint the entire picture and they often reflect only the very positive or very negative experiences previous customers have had with a given business, they can provide an idea of how a lawncare company interacts with its customers. Prospective customers who contact the Better Business Bureau may learn if there have been any glaring complaints against a particular contractor. • Ask each business what services they provide. While nearly every lawncare contractor will mow the lawn and
trim shrubs, many homeowners prefer companies that can adapt when the yard needs a change. This may include pest treatments, fertilization, aeration, and seasonal cleanups. • Look for a company that’s organized and connected. Customer service should be a factor when choosing a lawncare service. You want to be able to reach the com-

Treatments for Alzheimer’s disease continue to evolve Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most prevalent types of dementia in the world, affecting an estimated 35.6 million people all over the globe, and that number is expected to double in 20 years. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America estimates that as many as 5.1 million Americans may be living with Alzheimer’s disease. Australian company Actinogen Medical says Alzheimer’s is Australia’s second biggest killer. According to a 2012 study commissioned by the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, 747,000 Canadians were living with cognitive impairment, which included, but was not limited to, dementia. People with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia may experience a decline in mental function severe enough to reduce their ability to perform everyday activities. Some of the cognitive functions that may be impaired include memory, communication and language, ability to pay attention, reasoning and judgement, emotional control, and social behavior. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, nor is there an effective long-term way to prevent potential mental decline. However, that has not stopped scores of researchers and medical teams that continue to study the efficacy of different drugs and therapies. The following are some of the more promising options in the works. Leukine A safety trial on the drug Leukine already is underway at the Colorado University Anschutz Medical Campus. “We found so far that Leukine is safe in people with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Huntington Potter, the director of Alzheimer’s research at the university. “That means it doesn’t have the side effects that so many other Alzheimer’s drugs have had, which are swelling in the brain and bleeding into the brain.” Leukine has been successful in removing the plaque or amyloid along the outside of nerve cells in the brain of mice. Researchers do not know the exact mechanism for removal, but the drug is working and working Vein Specialist, quickly. Leukine also may Dr. Yeshwant G. memory function in people with mild cognitive impairment. “There is growing evidence that insulin carries out multiple functions in the brain and that poor regulation of insulin may contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Neelum Aggarwal, a neurologist at Rush and the lead investigator of the study. The 18-month clinical trial will study the nasal spray versus a placebo in 275 adults between the ages of 55 and 85.
Xanamem Australian researchers at Actinogen Medical have begun trials of a new drug called Xanamem. More than 170 patients with mild dementia in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom will take part in the placebo-controlled 12-week trial. The medicine blocks the stress hormone cortisol in order to improve mental function for those with dementias. In 2015, an Edinburgh University study of mice showed reducing cortisol in the brain improved their memory and decreased the number of Alzheimer’s-associated amyloid plaques in the brain. Researchers continue to work as they seek a successful, long-term option for treating or preventing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
