Why dental hygiene is essential for overall health The importance of maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums goes beyond having fresh breath and a white smile. Many people are surprised to discover that oral hygiene plays an integral role in overall health. Research indicates that oral health mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. Also, regular dental visits can alert dentists about overall health and pinpoint if a person is at a risk for chronic disease. An oral health check-up also may be the first indication of a potential health issue not yet evident to a general medical doctor.

Heart disease - According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a distinct relationship between periodontal disease and conditions such as heart disease and stroke. Joint teams at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, found that people with bleeding gums from poor dental hygiene could have an increased risk of heart disease. Bacteria from the mouth is able to enter the bloodstream when bleeding gums are present. That bacteria can stick to platelets and subsequently form blood clots. This interrupts the flow of blood to the heart and may trigger a heart attack. Brushing and flossing twice daily and rinsing with mouthwash can remove bacteria and keep gums healthy.

Facial pain - The Office of the Surgeon General says infections of the gums that support the teeth can lead to facial and oral pain. Gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease, as well as advanced gum disease, affects more than 75 percent of the American population.

Dental decay can lead to its own share of pain. Maintaining a healthy mouth can fend off decay and infections, thereby preventing pain.

Pancreatic cancer - In 2007, the Harvard School of Public Health reported a link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. In the ongoing study, 51,000 men were followed and data was collected beginning in 1986. The Harvard researchers found that men with a history of gum disease had a 64 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with men who had never had gum disease. The greatest risk for pancreatic cancer among this group was in men with recent tooth loss. However, the study was unable to find links between other types of oral health problems, such as tooth decay, and pancreatic cancer.

ease. As a result of the study, experts think that the bacteria can move via nerves in the roots of teeth that connect directly with the brain or through bleeding gums. These health conditions are just a sampling of the relationship between oral health and overall health. Additional connections also have been made and continue to be studied.

Alzheimer’s disease - Various health ailments, including poor oral health, have been linked to a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In 2010, after reviewing 20 years’ worth of data, researchers from New York University concluded that there is a link between gum inflammation and Alzheimer’s disease. Follow-up studies from researchers at the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom compared brain samples from 10 living patients with Alzheimer’s to samples from 10 people who did not have the disease. Data indicated that a bacterium — Porphyromonas gingivalis — was present in the Alzheimer's brain samples but not in the samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer’s. P. gingivalis is usually associated with chronic gum dis-

Eat! EAT! EAT! The origins of Oktoberfest VITO’S UNBEATABLE DEALS

The origins of Oktoberfest can be traced to a wedding that took place in Munich, Germany on October 12, 1810. To celebrate the marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of SaxeHildburghausen, the citizens of Munich were invited to the festivities, which were held on the fields in front of the city gates. The public fields were renamed "Theresienwiese" in honor of the new bride, and that name has withstood the test of time, even though locals now refer to the fields as "Wies'n." In honor of the Prince and his newly minted Princess, horse races were held on October 17, and historians are still uncertain as to who initially proposed the idea to include horse races in the festivities. One of the people suspected of proposing the races, Franz Baumgartner, eventually saw his horse end up in the winner's circle, where the steed was cheered by the roughly 40,000 spectators on hand to witness the events. The festivities, including the horse race, were repeated a year later, giving birth to the annual tradition of Oktoberfest. While 40,000 spectators might have seemed like a lot of people in 1810, attendance at modernday Oktoberfest festivities dwarfs that number, as Oktoberfestbeerfestivals. com notes that more than six million people attended the festivities in 2013. In 2015, festival workers served 7.3 million liters of beer.

here’s how It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

The benefits of waxing vehicles After a thorough washing and interior detailing, many vehicle owners put the finishing touch on their cars and trucks by applying a coat of wax. Is this a practice of automotive vanity, or does waxing actually pay legitimate dividends? A coat of wax provides a pristine shine and can help protect paint from the elements. Waxing may not be as essential as in years past, when vehicle paints were run-of-the-mill lacquers that didn’t offer much in the way of protection. But waxing can still provide a PUGH BOY’S variety of benefits that go Auto Sales “A Stinking Good Deal!” beyond making a vehicle $ look good when cruising ‘04 FORD FREESTAR 2,500 $ ‘08 KIA SPECTRA 3,795 ‘06 CHEVY COBALT COUPE $3,995

down the highway. • Protects paint’s clear coating: According to the research team at consumer resource site Angie’s List, failing to occasionally apply wax or another protectant to the vehicle’s exterior can cause a breakdown of the clear coat that protects the paint. If the clear coating deteriorates, the paint can be exposed to road salt and may be vulnerable to damage from oxidation. • Covers up blemishes: Properly applied wax can cover small scratches or light blemishes in the paint job. This may delay having to get a new paint job. • Shields against bugs and bird debris: A freshly washed car can seem like a magnet for bird droppings and bug splatter. A coat of wax is another protectant against these issues, and may make it easier to clean off residue so it doesn’t stick to and damage the vehicle’s paint. MyWoodChevy.com

• Reduces leasing expenses: Lessees may want to know that applying wax can keep a vehicle in better condition, which can pay dividends when it is time to turn in a vehicle. The dealership will perform a thorough inspection and could charge for discoloration, scratches or other paint issues. Waxing regularly may help reduce those expenses. • May help prevent careless driving: A person who diligently takes care of his or her vehicle may translate that care into caution behind the wheel. If one is excited to keep a clean and well-maintained car, it makes sense that the same person will want to protect the vehicle in other ways, such as through safe driving habits. • Provides exercise and fresh air: A day spent washing and waxing a vehicle can be enjoyable to those who can use some time outdoors. • Improves resale value: A well-maintained car or truck is more attractive to potential buyers. That can translate into a higher resale value, whether the vehicle is sold privately or as a trade-in. Waxing a vehicle is beneficial in various ways. New formulations are easier than ever to apply and can provide that shiny, well-maintained look drivers covet.

Every year children anxiously count down the days until they are able to put on their costumes and head out into the neighborhood in search of candy. Although Halloween is meant to be a fun occasion for the young and the old alike, it can also be unsafe. Costumes may impair a child's vision and motor function. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says that studies indicate Halloween is in the top three among holidays that produce the most visits to hospital emergency rooms. Finger and hand injuries account for 17.6 percent of injuries, and children ages 10 to 14 sustain the greatest proportion of Halloween injuries. Trips and falls also account for a high number of injuries. There are also a good deal of children who become injured before Halloween arrives, many of whom sustain lacerations when carving pumpkins. To make Halloween a safe holiday, children and adults can heed these suggestions. • Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. Although kids might want to wear shoes that match the costume, shoes that fit well and are comfortable are a safer bet. This will help prevent tripping and falling over cumbersome shoes. It also reduces the risk of developing blisters and discomfort when walking from home to home. • Go trick-or-treating in groups. Children should not be allowed to go out in search of candy alone. Going in a group means that someone can get help if need be. Also, there is safety in numbers. Predators won't view a child as an easy target if he or she is with fellow trickor-treaters. • Be visible. Since daylight saving time begins shortly after Halloween, there are fewer hours of daylight for Family Farm 8thYour Annual Since 1834 Renshaw Farms

trick-or-treating. When Halloween falls on a weekday, children have to wait until after school to venture out, and it can quickly become dark. Therefore, make sure that children are equipped with flashlights and put reflective tape on their costumes so they will be more visible to fellow pedestrians and motorists. • Stick to the sidewalks. Children should stay on sidewalks and cross the street only at established crosswalks. • Do not enter homes. Unless a child is with an adult and the home is owned by a trusted friend, kids should not enter homes for treats. • Avoid candles and jack-o-lanterns. A costume can easily catch on fire, so it is best to steer clear of candles, luminaries and lit pumpkins. • Bring water. Costumes can become hot and uncomfortable, especially when worn for long periods of time. Be sure children have water to rehydrate themselves. continued on page 20

nying a costume. Avoid rigid items that can cause injuries. • Examine all candy before eating. Before kids have their first bite, parents should inspect candy wrappers to determine if there has been any tampering. Also, avoid homemade treats from homes unless you know the people who prepared the items.

THE

GREAT OUTDOORS Did You Know? The Tour de France began in 1903 as a publicity stunt. French journalist Geo Lefevre initially conceived the idea of the grueling cycling competition in an attempt to boost the circulation of L'Auto, the daily sports newspaper where Lefevre worked. Together with his editor, Henri Desgrange, Lefevre developed a 1,500-mile clockwise loop of the country that began in Paris and continued through Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, and Nantes before returning to Paris. While today's race includes 21 stages, the initial race included just six, though each stage averaged 250 miles. By contrast, none of the 21 stages that make up the current Tour de France exceed 150 miles. Those six stages included the especially difficult first stage, which stretched almost 300 miles from Paris to Lyon. But the distance of stages was not the only difference between the initial race and the one cycling fans are familiar with today. Unlike today's cyclists who compete as teams, those who competed in the initial Tour de France rode as individuals and were not allowed to receive any assistance once the race began. As a result, many riders rode with spare tires and tubes attached to their torsos so they could address any tires that flattened during the race. In addition, riders who participated in the initial

race rode at night, whereas today's competitors do not. Ultimately, the first Tour de France was won by 32-year-old Maurice Garin, who beat the next closest racer, Lucien Pothier, by three hours, a margin of victory so great that no rider has ever beaten it.

Closing the pool for another season Closing a pool at the end of the swimming season can be bittersweet. Homeowners may be sad to bid adieu to the lazy days of splashing and swimming, but ready to embrace the cooler weather and the beauty of autumn. Before the leaves begin to fall from the trees, pool owners must prepare to close, or winterize, their pools.

circulate any chemicals added through the water. • Drain the pool’s water to the appropriate level. Water should fall just below the skimmer opening. Many pools do not need to be completely drained for the winter. • Shut off the filter pump, heater and any other equipment. Let all water drain out and allow equipment to dry before storing them away. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for lubrication and covering. Install freeze plugs if you choose to use them. • Adjust electricity settings. Turn off the circuit to outdoor outlets that feed the pool equipment, testing to make sure the power is off. • Put accessories away. Remove any ladders, diving boards, slides, external drain lines, and other recreational materials from the pool, storing them in a garage or shed so they are not subjected to potentially harsh winter weather. • Inflate air pillows to roughly 80 percent full if you will be using them. Gather your helpers to attach the pool cover or leaf catcher net. Secure it thoroughly with anchors, water bags, wire fasteners, or whatever method is applicable for the cover and pool type. Remember, a quality pool cover will last for several years and keep leaves, dust and other unwanted items out of the water. Come early autumn, homeowners can begin closing their pools to keep them secure and clean until the next swimming season begins. PA#107189

• Gather your supplies. Make a list of the supplies you need to close the pool. Having everything on hand will make the process far more efficient than trying to wing it. Closing a pool can be a large job, so it pays to have some extra hands available. Enlist some helpers who will be available to hand you materials or to assist with placing the cover on the pool — which can be challenging to do on your own. • Don’t wait until the last minute to purchase necessary chemicals. The chemicals used throughout the season will also be needed in the winterization process. Therefore, be sure you have enough before pool supplies become difficult to find in area stores. These include sanitizer, algaecide and pH-balancing chemicals. • Clean the entire pool area. Ensuring the pool water and the surface of the pool is clean can make reopening the pool easy. Vacuum the pool thoroughly, removing any debris and organic matter that can contribute to algae growth. Don’t forget to brush down the walls of the pool and clean the jets and area where the filter skimmer meets the pool. Pool walls have plenty of crevices where algae can hide and multiply. • Test the water. Leading pool products manufacturer Hayward recommends adjusting the pH to between 7.2 and 7.8 to prevent stains, scaling and algae growth. Alkalinity should be 80 to 125 ppm for plaster/ gunite pools and 125 to 150 ppm for other pool types. Test the level of available chlorine, and super-chlorinate the pool to maintain a sanitation level of at least 4 ppm. Once the pool cover is on, the amount of chlorine that escapes due to sunlight and evaporation will decrease. An algaecide may be used, if desired, as well. In very cold climates, a pool-water antifreeze may be necessary. Check with your pool supply retailer for more information. • Run the filter. Run the filter at least 24 hours before disassembling the filter for the season. This will help

Answers to Puzzles From Page 15 Word Scramble: SHOWER

Paint and renovate correctly Changing paint colors is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to add a fresh new look to the interior or exterior of a home. Both exterior and interior paint can be used to protect homes and make strong impressions. Painting projects are fun and can be easy, but not all projects are so simple. Homeowners may need to exercise patience and devote an ample amount of time to get the job done right. One errant drip is all it takes to turn a perfect paint job into a colorful mess. While paints are much safer now than in years past, they still need to be handled with caution and disposed of with care after the job is done. Painting can be a tricky project because the fumes and chemicals found in many paints make these products more difficult to dispose of.

ers in the United State throw out 64 million gallons of paint per year. While latex paints are not considered hazardous waste, they should be recycled. Oil-based paints, however, are considered hazardous household waste (HHW) and must be disposed of properly. All homeowners should check with their trash and recycling collection centers regarding the proper way to dispose of paints, stains and varnishes. It’s also possible to visit Earth911.com and find a disposal facility online.
