Among the memorable productions Janet has directed on the IRT’s stages are The Glass Menagerie (1999), Ah! Wilderness (2002), The Drawer Boy (2004), Looking over the President’s Shoulder (2008), The Diary of Anne Frank (2011), James Still’s The House That Jack Built (2012), and To Kill a Mockingbird (2016). Celebrating the IRT’s 45-year legacy this season, she directed A Christmas Carol.

LEADERSHIP: JANET ALLEN EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Creating world-class professional theatre for Central Indiana audiences of all ages has remained a career-long passion for Janet Allen. She began at the IRT in 1980 as the theatre’s first literary manager–dramaturg. After four years in New York City, she returned to serve ten years as associate artistic director under mentors Tom Haas and Libby Appel. She was named the IRT’s fourth artistic director in 1996, and last season celebrated her 20th season in that role. In 2013, she was named the IRT’s executive artistic director. During Janet’s tenure, the IRT has significantly diversified its education services to both adults and children, expanded its new play development programs, solidified its reputation as a top-flight regional theatre dedicated to diverse programming and production quality, and established the IRT as a generous content partner with organizations throughout central Indiana. Janet’s passion for nurturing playwrights has led to a fruitful relationship with James Still, the IRT’s playwright-in-residence for 19 years, and the creation and production of 15 new works, the Indiana Series, that examine Hoosier and Midwestern sensibilities (seven of them by James Still). Her collaboration with playwrights has brought the theatre prestigious grants from the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Joyce Foundation, and the 6

Janet studied theatre at Illinois State University, Indiana University, and Exeter College, Oxford. As a classical theatre specialist, she has published and taught theatre history and dramaturgy at IUPUI and Butler University. Janet’s leadership skills and community service have been recognized by Indianapolis Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Award, the Network of Women in Business–IBJ’s Influential Women in Business Award, Safeco’s Beacon of Light in Our Community Award, a Distinguished Hoosier Award conferred by Governor Frank O’Bannon, Girls Inc.’s Touchstone Award for Arts Leadership, and the Indiana Commission on Women’s Keeper of the Light Torchbearer Award. She is a proud alum of the Stanley K. Lacy Leadership program (Class XIX) and the Shannon Leadership Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is a 2013-2014 Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Arts Fellow. In April 2015 Janet was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and received a Medallion Award for significant national contributions from the Children’s Theatre Foundation of America. Janet is a member of the Indianapolis Woman’s Club and Congregation Beth-El Zedeck. She lives in an historic house built in 1855 in the downtown Chatham Arch neighborhood with her husband, Joel Grynheim, their two daughters, her mother, and two lovely mutts.

In 2016, Suzanne was honored to serve as a panelist for Shakespeare in American Communities in cooperation with Arts Midwest. Suzanne is active in the community, having been the treasurer of Irish Fest for nine years, a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the Day Nursery Association for seven years, and a past treasurer of IndyFringe.

LEADERSHIP: SUZANNE SWEENEY

Suzanne is a graduate of the College of William & Mary (undergraduate) and Indiana University (M.B.A.). She started her career as a CPA; prior to coming to Indianapolis, Suzanne worked in finance for more than 10 years, living in such varied locales as Washington, D.C. ; Dallas, Texas; Frankfurt, Germany; Honolulu, Hawaii; and even working for three months in Auckland, New Zealand (where, yes, she went bungee jumping). Suzanne is an alum of the Stanley K. Lacy Leadership Program (Class XXXI). Suzanne lives in the Old Northside, with her 13-year-old son, Jackson, and their foxhound rescue dog, Gertie.

MANAGING DIRECTOR Suzanne is an 18-year veteran of the IRT, managing every administrative area within the theatre at one time or another during that period. Serving as the managing director is the capstone to her career here. Her main responsibility had been to serve as the chief financial officer of the theatre, running the business office, human resources, and information technology functions. As the CFO, she helped to steer the organization through 15 years of balanced budgets (and 15 audits!). She also served as the interim managing director for 18 months in 2004-2005. Suzanne is continuing the work of helping to implement a structured and inclusive fundraising effort, including moving the theatre more proactively into planned giving, as well as expanding its marketing efforts and creativity. She is excited to be moving into year four of this leadership role of the organization she loves.

New Harmony Project, Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference, the Colorado New Play Summit, the Lark in New York, Launch Pad at UC–Santa Barbara, Perry-Mansfield New Works Festival, Telluride Playwright’s Festival, New Visions/New Voices, Fresh Ink, and Write Now at the IRT. Three of his plays have received the Distinguished Play Award from the American Alliance for Theatre & Education, and his work has been produced throughout the United States, Canada, China, Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Australia. Other theatres that have produced James’s plays include the Kennedy Center, Denver Center, Geva, Cornerstone Theater Company, Ford’s Theatre, People’s Light & Theatre, the Barter, Pasadena Playhouse, Portland Stage, the Station, the Asolo, Company of Fools, the Children’s Theater Company of Minneapolis, Metro Theater Company, B-Street Theatre, Tricklock, Vermont Stage Company, the Round House, American Blues, Illusion Theater, and the Mark Taper Forum.

LEADERSHIP: JAMES STILL PLAYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE During James’s 19 years as playwright-in-residence, IRT audiences have seen his plays April 4, 1968: Before We Forgot How to Dream, The House That Jack Built, I Love to Eat: Cooking with James Beard, The Velveteen Rabbit, The Heavens Are Hung in Black, Interpreting William, Iron Kisses, Looking over the President’s Shoulder (twice), The Gentleman from Indiana, Searching for Eden, He Held Me Grand, And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank (thrice), Amber Waves, and The Secret History of the Future. He has also directed many productions at the IRT, including The Mystery of Irma Vep, Red, Other Desert Cities, God of Carnage, Becky’s New Car, Rabbit Hole, Doubt, Bad Dates, Plaza Suite, The Immigrant, and Dinner with Friends, as well as his own I Love to Eat, Looking Over the President’s Shoulder (2001), and Amber Waves. This season the IRT produces his new play Miranda and he directs Dial “M” for Murder.

Recent premieres at other theaters include the Denver Center Theatre production of Appoggiatura which was a nominee for Outstanding New Play for the Henry Awards at the Colorado Theatre Guild. Appoggiatura is the second play in the family trilogy that began with the award-winning The House That Jack Built. The final play in the trilogy is Miranda which premiered earlier this year at Illusion Theater in Minneapolis. Also premiering recently was The Widow Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC. James's short play When Miss Lydia Hinkley Gives a Bird the Bird has appeared in several festivals around the country and was a finalist for the Heideman Award from Actors Theatre of Louisville. New plays in the works include (A) New World , as well as an adaptation of the classic Black Beauty commissioned by Seattle Children’s Theatre. James also works in television and film and has been nominated for five Emmys and a Television Critics Association Award; he has twice been a finalist for the Humanitas Prize. He was a producer and head writer for the series PAZ, the head writer for Maurice Sendak’s Little Bear, and writer for the Bill Cosby series Little Bill. He wrote The Little Bear Movie and The Miffy Movie as well as the feature film The Velocity of Gary. James grew up in Kansas and lives in Los Angeles.

James is an elected member of the National Theatre Conference in New York, and a Kennedy Center inductee of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre. Other honors include the Todd McNerney New Play Prize from the Spoleto Festival, William Inge Festival’s Otis Guernsey New Voices Award, the Orlin Corey Medallion from the Children’s Theatre Foundation of America, and the Charlotte B. Chorpenning Award for Distinguished Body of Work. His plays have been nominated four times for the Pulitzer Prize, and have been developed and workshopped at Robert Redford’s Sundance, the 8 Christina D. Harper, Tracey N. Indiana Theatre, which was renovated to contain three performance spaces (OneAmerica Stage, Upperstage, and Cabaret) and work spaces, reviving this historic downtown entertainment site. To keep ticket prices and services affordable for the entire community, the IRT operates as a not-for-profit organization, deriving more than 50% of its operating income from contributions. The theatre is generously supported by foundations, corporations, and individuals, an investment which recognizes the IRT’s mission-based commitment to serving Central Indiana with top-quality theatrical fare. INDIANA REPERTORY THEATRE PROFILE HISTORY

Since the Indiana Repertory Theatre was founded in 1971, it has grown into one of the leading regional theatres in the country, as well as one of the top-flight cultural institutions in the city and state. In 1991 Indiana’s General Assembly designated the IRT as “Theatre Laureate” of the state of Indiana. The IRT’s national reputation has been confirmed by prestigious grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lila Wallace–Reader’s Digest Fund, the Theatre Communications Group–Pew Charitable Trusts, the Shubert Foundation, and the Kresge Foundation; and by a Joyce Award from the Joyce Foundation. The IRT remains the largest fully professional resident not-forprofit theatre in the state, providing 120,000 live professional theatre experiences for its audience last season. These experiences included 40,000 students and teachers from 56 of Indiana’s 92 counties, making the IRT one of the most youth-oriented professional theatres in the country. A staff of more than 100 seasonal and year-round employees creates nine productions exclusively for Indiana audiences. Actors, directors, and designers are members of professional stage unions. The IRT’s history has been enacted in two historic downtown theatres. The Athenaeum Turners Building housed the company’s first eight seasons. Since 1980 the IRT has occupied the 1927

GREAT STORIES, GREAT PERFORMANCES BY JANET ALLEN, EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

The thriller genre is a great means of gathering people from many different viewpoints and ages under a subject matter umbrella that deeply connects us as humans. We all share a fascination with human evil and murder, whether that comes at the hands of the gentle Agatha Christie, or the bloodthirsty Quentin Tarantino. Dial “M” for Murder lives somewhere in the middle—retaining some of the gentility of the British thriller, it also adopts the sociological nuance of the post-War, ruthless, get-ahead economy, with the very frank plotting of a cold-blooded murder. The play’s gender viewpoint provides another source of its suspense: Margot seems to exist in a world entirely peopled by men. One of the greatest sources of this script’s enduring power is the same thing that makes it ripe for great performance— the depth of characterization that Frederick Knott brings to the proceedings. We learn a great deal about these characters in deep conversations they share about how their pasts affect their present moments: past misdeeds, past discoveries, past longings. The backstories of the characters seem to have 20

brought them, inexorably, inevitably, to their fateful actions. And unlike today’s movie and TV thrillers, it almost all happens with language. Save one brief action sequence, the suspense is meted out in words, in the cascading power of language to persuade, to confuse, to implicate, to elicit doubt and fear. This makes for perfect stagecraft and delicious work for actors. As we draw IRT’s 45th season to an end, we thank all of you who have been with us on the journey—a journey bringing this institution from birth into its true adulthood; a journey through many seasons of variety in playmaking; a journey through this season, from The Three Musketeers through Finding Home: Indiana at 200 to Dial “M” for Murder and many others in between. SURPRISE VS. SUSPENSE BY JAMES STILL, DIRECTOR

Thanks to the movie (based on the play) directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Dial “M” for Murder is a story we think we know. There I’ve said it … the two scariest words in the murdermystery genre: Alfred Hitchcock. Who hasn’t pulled back a shower curtain hoping not to find something out of Psycho? “Hitch” (his well-known nickname) had plenty of witty things to say about murder. One of my favorites is: “I have a perfect cure for a sore throat: cut it.” What you may not remember is that Dial “M” isn’t a typical mystery, because the audience is in on the murder plan from the beginning. I find that twist to be one of the many compelling things about the story. Playwright Frederick Knott makes the audience both witness and accomplice to the attempted murder of Margot. In that way, Mr. Knott reinvents the murder mystery and turns it on its head. The venerable question posed by a murder mystery is “Whodunit?” But Dial “M” asks a different question: “WillHeGetAwayWithIt?” By turning the genre inside out, Mr. Knott not only changes the question that drives the play, but also how the audience is drawn into the play. The character Tony has spent a year working out the details of

his wife’s murder, and in theory, it’s fool-proof. But to quote the character Max: “…in stories things turn out as the author plans them to…. In real life they don’t—always.” In Dial “M,” when things don’t go exactly to plan, they get even more … interesting. Mr. Knott had the great instinct to focus less on mystery and more on suspense. Hitchcock, of course, was known as the Master of Suspense. He said, “Mystery is an intellectual process, but suspense is essentially an emotional process.” Hitchcock also made a distinction between “surprise” and “suspense.” Surprise is when two people are sitting at a table and a bomb goes off. Suspense is when two people are sitting at a table and the audience knows there is a bomb about to go off … so they are waiting for the surprise. … Hitchcock had something to say about audiences too: “Give them pleasure: the same pleasure they have when they wake up from a nightmare.” Photo by Amber Mills.

When James Still approached me about doing the music and sound for Dial “M” for Murder, I said yes before he could even finish the question. As a lifelong devotee of Alfred Hitchcock films and an eternal student of the music of Bernard Herrmann and Dimitri Tiomkin, I leapt at the chance to explore the stylish beauty of this suspense thriller. The first step in this process for us was determining that we would be willing to embrace the conventions of classic movie thriller music. In our irony-laden post-modern world of today, there’s an aversion to allowing music to show emotions in cinematic underscore, with a focus towards mega-volume and excitement. But Dial “M” is a thriller from another era, in which a slow dramatic build is essential to creating the suspense needed for the story. Music is essential to creating that feeling of dread and suspicion. The next step in the process was understanding how important romance is to the story, and how music could convey that sense of a love long passed with embers that are still smoldering. The final step is incorporating all of these ideas into the actors’ performances.

Pulling from the rich Hitchcock canon of suspense films, while generously nodding to film noir’s distinctive graphic qualities, we’ve placed our Dial “M” in an elegant, Hollywood-esque London apartment. It’s 1952. The upper surround (which we’ve dubbed the “mega-cornice”) sits above the apartment, separate but echoing its architecture. Projected images and Hitchcockinspired closeups will illuminate this surface, helping us drive the suspenseful and more intricate plot points of the story. The way that this set piece looms and leans out over the apartment below is meant to enhance the dark psychological quality of these film-noir-inspired compositions. The images will feature odd angles, odd scales, and odd croppings, creating in the audience a subtle sense of discomfort or imbalance as our story unfolds.

When we began discussions about the look of the characters in Dial “M” for Murder, one of the first things that director James Still brought up was the idea of the characters feeling like they inhabited a lush Technicolor world of early fifties American cinema. We decided to use this idea of color palette to convey character, and to rely on lighting and projections to evoke the film noir qualities of the play and setting. As a design team, we’ve worked carefully together to craft a world that feels very heightened and tense, as befitting the suspense of the play.

It’s set in 1952; with Margot our only female character, it’s a great opportunity to contrast the femininity of her character with the men who both threaten and protect her. This was the era of Dior’s New Look, when women were excited to dress more extravagantly and colorfully after the war, and it gives us an opportunity to convey Margot’s wealth and polish. Chris is thrilled to return to the IRT stage and work again with the incomparable James Still, after appearing at the IRT in James’s The House that Jack Built. Chris’s Chicago theatre credits include Romeo and Juliet at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Letters Home at Griffin Theatre, and ENRON at TimeLine Theatre. He was seen in Henry IV Part 1, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Tartuffe at the Theatre at Monmouth in Maine. Television credits include Chicago Fire (NBC), Crisis (NBC), and Mind Games (ABC). Chris also does stand-up comedy and improvises at the Upright Citizens Brigade. He hails from Norwalk, Connecticut, but currently resides in Los Angeles. Chris earned his B.F.A. in acting at the Theatre School at DePaul University.

MEREDITH GRANGER PENDLETON & WILLIAMS

Meredith Granger is pleased to return to the IRT stage after first appearing in 2000’s State of the Union. Between then and now, he has been seen and heard in the lobby as a costumed caroler prior to performances of A Christmas Carol. Recent stage outings include 1776 for Bloomington’s Cardinal Stage Company and last August’s IndyFringe Festival. Meredith has appeared in mysteries including the Midwest premiere of The Penultimate Problem of Sherlock Holmes, Frederick Knott’s Wait until Dark in Louisville, Arsenic and Old Lace and Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution in Indianapolis, and lately as part of an interactive murder mystery dinner show. He also contributed to the study guide for IRT’s 2008 Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure.

DAVID MOSEDALE O'BRIEN

David is delighted to make his IRT debut. Locally, he has played Lear in King Lear with First Folio, the Duke in Measure for Measure and Franklin in Arden of Faversham with Hoosier Bard, Marley and OId Joe in A Christmas Carol and Captain Brackett in South Pacific at Beef and Boards, Antigonus in The Winter’s Tale and Douglas Finch in Impressionism with Wisdom Tooth, the Stage Manager in Our Town and Polonius in Hamlet with Acting Up Productions, and Herr Schultz in Cabaret for Bobdirex. ROBERT NEAL CHIEF INSPECTOR HUBBARD

This is Robert’s 17th season with the IRT, where he has performed in more than 40 productions. He is a company member of Heartland Actors Repertory Theatre, where last summer he directed The Winter’s Tale. Other local theatres include ShadowApe, the Phoenix Theatre, and Cardinal Stage; he has also performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Early Music Festival. In 2012 he reprised his role as James Beard in James Still’s I Love to Eat for the James Beard Foundation Awards at Lincoln Center in New York City. Regional theatre credits include Syracuse Stage, the Blackstone Theatre, the Bailiwick Repertory Theatre, American Players Theatre, Pennsylvania Center Stage, the Oklahoma and Kentucky Shakespeare festivals, and the Brown County Playhouse, as well as the English American Theatre Festival in Dusseldorf, Germany. Television credits include NBC’s Chicago Fire. Robert’s training is from Penn State (M.F.A.) and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He is a recipient of the 2007 Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Grant and the 2016 Theatre MVP Grant from the Central Indiana Community Foundation.

Paul’s most recent production in Indy was Peter and the Starcatcher at the Phoenix Theatre, where he was also seen in their regional premiere of Hand to God and before that, Silence: The Musical, as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Other favorite productions in Indy include Sweeney Todd at Actors Theatre of Indiana directed by IRT’s Richard J Roberts, Les Misérables at Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre, The Sound of Music at Beef & Boards, Cabaret for BobDirex, and several IndyFringe Festivals. He frequents classes at ComedySportz Indy and is a bonsai enthusiast.

SARAH RUGGLES MARGOT WENDICE

Sarah is excited to make her IRT debut. Chicago credits include Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits! and Tug of War: Foreign Fire at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and Vices and Virtues at the Neil LaButte Festival. Sarah received her M.F.A. in acting from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is represented by Grossman & Jack Talent.

Steve makes his IRT debut. He currently lives and works in Chicago, where credits include The Solid Sand Below and Support Group for Men (Goodman Theatre), As You Like It (Chicago Shakespeare Theater), Tea and Sympathy (The Artistic Home), and Changes of Heart (Remy Bumppo). Regional credits include Henry IV Part I as Hotspur, Measure for Measure as Angelo, King John, Twelve Angry Men, Mary Stuart, Titus Andronicus (Utah Shakespeare Festival); Richard II, Love’s Labor’s Lost, and Love’s Labor’s Won (Illinois Shakespeare Festival); and The Tempest, The Critic, The Winter’s Tale, Henry V, Comedy of Errors, Widower’s Houses, and Ah, Wilderness! (American Players Theatre). He can also be seen as the recurring character Commander Hicks on Chicago PD and Chicago Fire on NBC.

THE COMPANY FREDERICK KNOTT PLAYWRIGHT

Frederick Knott (1916-2002) was born in China, the son of English missionaries. He was educated in England and earned a law degree from Cambridge University. He served in the British Army in World War II, rising to the rank of major, and eventually moved to the United States. Dial “M” for Murder started as a BBC television production. The play premiered in London in 1952, followed by a successful Broadway run. Knott also wrote the screenplay for the 1954 Hollywood movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 3D, starring Ray Milland and Grace Kelly. Write Me a Murder was produced on Broadway in 1961. Wait until Dark was produced on Broadway in 1966; the film version was released in 1967 starring Audrey Hepburn.

JAMES STILL DIRECTOR

James is the IRT’s playwright-in-residence. He has directed many productions at the IRT, including The Mystery of Irma Vep, Red, Other Desert Cities, God of Carnage, Mary’s Wedding, Becky’s New Car, Rabbit Hole, Doubt, Bad Dates, Old Wicked Songs, Plaza Suite, The Immigrant, and Dinner with Friends, as well as his own I Love to Eat, Amber Waves, and Looking Over the President’s Shoulder (2001). During his 19 years as playwright-in-residence, IRT audiences have seen James’s plays Miranda, April 4, 1968: Before We Forgot How to Dream, The Velveteen Rabbit, The House That Jack Built, I Love to Eat, The Heavens Are Hung in Black, Interpreting William, Iron Kisses, Looking Over the President’s Shoulder (twice), The Gentleman from Indiana, Searching for Eden, He Held Me Grand, Amber Waves, And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank (thrice), and The Secret History of the Future. KATE SUTTON-JOHNSON SCENIC DESIGNER

At the IRT, Kate has designed Becky’s New Car and Rabbit Hole. Based in Minneapolis, she designs extensively in the Twin Cities area as well as regional venues. In 2007, she received the Ivey Award for Emerging Artist in the Twin Cities, and in 2016 she was honored again with an Ivey for her design for Sweeney Todd. Kate also works as a designer in the museum world, and her exhibit design work can be seen at numerous museums around the country. Kate grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and went on to study design at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she graduated in 2002.

TRACY DORMAN COSTUME DESIGNER

At the IRT, Tracy has designed The Great Gatsby, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Game’s Afoot, The Crucible, Dracula, The 39 Steps, The Heavens Are Hung in Black, Rabbit Hole, Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, Intimate Apparel, Searching for Eden, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, and Jitney. Opera credits include The Masked Ball and The Elixir of Love for Austin Opera, and associate for Julie Taymor’s Grendel. Off Broadway Michelle designed Fifty Words. Her lighting has been seen at many of the nation’s leading regional theatres, including the Goodman, Steppenwolf, the Alliance, Center Stage, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and many others. She was awarded the prestigious NEA/TCG Career Development Grant for Design. Michelle is head of lighting design at the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Theatre and Dance.

At the IRT, Lindsay has designed The Mystery of Irma Vep, Good People, and Agnes of God. His Broadway credits include Bronx Bombers and A Time to Kill. Regionally he has designed for Geva, the Guthrie Theater, Center Stage, American Conservatory Theatre, Hartford Stage, South Coast Repertory, Alliance, Goodman, Arena Stage, Yale Repertory, the Old Globe, Chicago Shakespeare, Steppenwolf, Lookingglass, and many others. Richard has been resident dramaturg for 19 of his 27 seasons with the Indiana Repertory Theatre. He has also been a dramaturg for the New Harmony Project and Write Now. He has directed the IRT’s productions of The Cay, Bridge & Tunnel, The Night Watcher, Neat, Pretty Fire, The Giver (2009), The Power of One, and Twelfth Night, as well as four editions of A Christmas Carol. Other directing credits include Actors Theatre of Indiana, the Phoenix Theatre, Edyvean Repertory Theatre, Indianapolis Civic Theatre, IndyShakes/Wisdom Tooth, Butler University, and Anderson University. Richard studied music at DePauw University and theatre at Indiana University. In 2003 he was awarded a Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

NATHAN GARRISON STAGE MANAGER

This is Nathan’s 21st season at the IRT. He has also worked with Center Stage in Baltimore, Utah Shakespeare Festival, and Brown County Playhouse. TRACY DORMAN COSTUME DESIGNER HOW DID YOU BECOME A COSTUME DESIGNER? I grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. I didn’t do any theatre until I got to college. And I never performed—it’s my worst nightmare. Truthfully! But I was very crafty, always did art, started sewing very young, making my own clothes and stuff. So I was interested in fashion and costume design. I went to Washington University in St. Louis and I started out in the Fine Arts program. Then I took an Intro to Costume class and I was hooked. I had been always interested in other time periods, and I loved reading, and characters, and movies, and going to the theatre. So costuming really embraced all of those different areas of interest, because I could read and then imagine the characters in my head, and make it happen on stage. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PART OF THE COSTUME DESIGN PROCESS? I still love what I first loved about it, which is reading plays and re-imagining them and inventing ways to bring these characters to the stage. I love the research. I love the collaborative process of coming up with the concept. When I first started out, I think that it was more cerebral. I really liked the solo process of designing, the sketches, the research and development process. And now I sort of love it all equally. I love the fitting part of the process, where it starts to come together. I really love tech, figuring it out on stage, and the physical part of making it happen. Each step of the process is so distinct for a costume designer, because one is on paper, and then you’re putting it on actor’s body, and then you’re putting all those bodies on stage. The arc of that journey from the very first moment you talk until you get it on stage can be a really long, arduous process, and I have come to appreciate all the parts of that process.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT WORKING AT THE IRT? Since I did my first show here in 2004, I’ve done a show at the IRT almost every season pretty consistently. Janet [Allen, executive artistic director] has put me with different directors, and that’s been really lovely for my career, because it has helped me develop other collaborations over the years. Because I have worked at the IRT so long, spanning 14 years, it feels like a family, like I’m going home to an institution that I have a deep connection with, both artistically and personally. As someone who works mostly in regional theatre, and travels for most of my job, it is really lovely to go to a place where it feels really comfortable and I feel really supported. Professionally, what I really appreciate—and when I talk to other designers and directors I work with, everyone really appreciates—is the design process at the IRT. A lot of careful thought and support is put into developing the show and the

design, long before the production happens. And that does not happen everywhere. At the IRT, they bring us in for a design conference, and there is a lot of follow-up, and you have a lot of time to really build a production. I think that really shows when you see the final product on stage. At the end of the day, I love when it’s opening night, and you can say, I did it. We did it. When you’re in that moment, and you see those people on stage, and they are who you imagined… It’s such a collaboration with the actors and the director and the costume staff. It really takes a lot of back and forth to create those characters on stage. That’s what we’re all working towards— bringing those characters to life.
