WHY WE RIDE
I choose Indian Motorcycles because they stand apart from the crowd, they are classy and classic and have a brilliant history and when I’m riding my 2019 Scout, it feels like flying. The connection that I feel to the world and the wind and the grass and open spaces, is true freedom for me. Suzanne Serelle, Sydney Australia
I ride a 2018 Road Master Elite. They stand out, have a unique look and then of course the history. They ride like no other. Feeling the breeze in your face, the smells of the grass the country air the working farms on the long distance cross country rides, spells freedom. David Digby WA Australia
CHOOSE I ride a 2017 Chief Vintage which I’ve had the joy to customise, Just like the joy I feel from riding. It’s my Zen moment. Peace and solitude. I’ve always had a secret love affair with the Indian Motorcycle brand. I’m so happy to finally be with one, a perfect partner to share the adventures of life! Chris Keeble. Sydney Australia
006
WISELY I grew up around old bikes and I always loved the backstories to them. I eventually purchased a 2018 jade green Springfield. It was the best choice ever. The look of an Indian is one to behold, they are so perfect. Truly amazing motorcycles. Tony Hille. Sydney Australia
007
At the age of 52 and being hit by a few of life’s curve balls. A bike license seemed like a necessity. I test rode a JD Limited Chief Vintage at the Indian Dealership in Sydney and from that moment on, I was sold. With only a few short years of riding yet over 260,000ks, with around 5 to 6 round trips of Oz.... you cannot wipe this cheesy grin off my face. A far superior cruiser in all departments over anything else I’ve ever ridden. Tracey Fellows (Indian Jack - Sydney NSW Australia)
FUEL CAFÉ - EAST LYNNE AND MOTORBIKE MUSEUM TO CANDELO FOR LUNCH AND MORE Words and pictures by Chris Keeble
The beautiful Sapphire Coast. There are so many hidden treasures here, it’s very hard to choose a route. But chosen I have! 008
On this occasion I make my way to East Lynne, about 3 to 4 hours south of Sydney, a township on the Princess Highway that has only one thing to see. That’s the Fuel Café (pies and petrol) and a must stop for any Indian Motorcycle rider. Bede Cooper, the owner, has collected very rare artefacts and most of them are Indian motorcycle collectables from another era. I was lucky, as it turned out on this day there was
a rally of old pre 1954 Indians there! Grab yourself a coffee, and we will soon head off down the winding and beautiful Princess highway through various small villages, recently devastated by bushfires.
if you are running short on time stay on the Princess Highway. Don’t let the word highway put you off, for a highway it’s one of the best with lovely curves and sweeping bends to keep any rider happy.
As you head south out of East Lynne, we come to the busy tourist spot of Batemans Bay. It is from here where you can take the coastal road, George Bass Drive, that meanders through a number of seaside villages. OR
Whichever way you choose you end up on the Princess Highway as you come out of Moruya and continue heading south through Mogo, for cute shops and a zoo, Bodalla, for cheese and dairy and Narooma, for oysters.
009
Then 20 minutes past Narooma you’ll need to keep a look out for the Central Tilba Historic Village right turn off, this place is worth a stop and a look around. Check out ‘Tilba Sweet Spot’ which is famous for all the old-time sweets and old school milkshakes. If that is enough adventure for one day you could finish the afternoon here at Tilba, enjoy the great pub in town that often offers live music on weekends,

and make your way back to where you’ve come from. But for those a little more adventurous I’m pushing it today because I still want to ride the country roads around this area. Leaving Tilba, it’s back on the Princess Highway as we pass through Cobargo, half of this town was unfortunately lost to the fires earlier this year. In 25 minutes or so you will be tuning right to Cooma on the Snowy Mountains Highway, ride for 26kms and turn left on Mogilla Rd, from here follow your nose for 21ks of great scenic road with big country vistas, my happy place, and you’ll find yourself in Candelo. This funky yet sleepy little town has a pub and a few cafes. Candelo General Store and Cafe recommended for a terrific lunch. Eat up and let’s continue.
Alternatively, from Candelo you can take the 33km journey to the coastal town of Tathra, famous for it’s wharf with oysters to die for and continue on north to Bermagui a top fishing spot via a very famous and well-loved motorcycle road about. This is what dreams are made of! Hunker down in any one of these amazing villages for the night if you can. I know the folk from these parts appreciate the support from visitors and bike riders are very very welcome!
East Lynne Store Princes Hwy, East Lynne NSW 2536 Open 7 days a week 9-5
From Candelo, we go inland to Wolumla which is 16ks away and meets the Princess highway. If you’re after an overnight stay head south from here and in no time you’ll hit Merimbula, a beautiful seaside town famous for whale watching with lots of accommodation available.

Although you can’t ride the entire way around this enormous and beautiful deep blue lake spotted with more than 1,000 islands, when the road runs out there’s a ferry to keep you going. Whether you’re about to ride from Brisbane to Mount Mee, Ararat to Avoca, or East Lynn to Candelo getting your gear in order can be a daunting task, Even if you have the Scout’s new QuickRelease Saddlebags. After safety, the most important aspect of any ride is staying dry. There’s nothing worse than wet feet and a wet saddle, so whatever the forecast calls for, prepare for the worst. You’ll want rain gear, along with a solid pair of waterproof boots. And it never hurts to throw in a lighter, more comfortable pair of shoes for nighttime, when you’re off the bike and hitting the town. If you have space, you won’t regret including an extra pair of underwear and socks, in case the water finds a way in (and it will). If you’re much of a hiker, you know the next rule: Layer it up. Even if it’s hot where you’re riding, if you’re changing elevations or starting out in the cool of early mornings, you’ll need a heavier pair of gloves and either a warm liner or windbreaker to fight off the chill. If you’re riding somewhere cold, you never know when the sun’s going to come on strong—and when you’ll need to drop a layer. Always pack at least one shirt that you don’t ride in. Something that looks
and smells a little more appropriate when you’re off your bike. As for pants, you can wear your one pair of favorite riding pants for a week (especially if you’ve got the new cooled seats; see page 024), and pack one more for when you’re off the bike. Throw your phone, chargers, and other gadgets in a dry bag, so you know they’re always safe. After that it’s just the basics: toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and a hat that can cover up your helmet hair. Toss in some aspirin, too, since the long hauls tend to bring out a few extra aches and pains.
RIDER KNOWLEDGE
How to Corner Better By Joe Dryden, professional stunt rider Feeling the bike move as you lean into a turn, hearing the pegs scrape just a bit—for many of us, it’s the best part of riding. And the more confident and experienced you get, the better it becomes. That’s why we asked Joe Dryden, a professional stunt rider (who, in his free time, rides an Indian Chieftain) for some tips. You may not ever be chased by Keanu Reeves like Dryden was in John Wick 2 (or have to fight Reeves while he’s on horseback and you’re on a motorcycle, like Dryden did in John Wick 3), but at least you’ll have even more fun the next time you find yourself on a twisty road this fall.
Get the right tires
“There is a reason some tires are more expensive than others. It makes an unbelievable difference. And make sure they’re at the correct pressure.”
READER TIPS
Here are some of the best tips straight from Indian Motorcycle riders.
PACK DAILY ITEMS IN ONE BAG AND LONGER-TERM ITEMS IN ANOTHER. THAT WAY IF IT’S JUST A QUICK LAYOVER IN A MOTEL, THERE’S ONLY ONE BAG TO BRING IN. —LORI S.
Learn before you turn
“You have to practice. Don’t try to learn as you go. I recommend finding an open space, like a parking lot, where you can push your bike around and learn what it can do. Start a big-radius circle at five to ten miles an hour. Tighten up until you feel the floorboard touch and then back off of it. You need to know what that feels like.”
PUT EACH DAY’S WORTH OF CLOTHES, SHIRT, UNDERWEAR, AND SOCKS IN ZIPLOCK BAGS. SIT ON THEM TO GET AS MUCH AIR OUT AS POSSIBLE, THEN SEAL THEM UP. SAVES A TON OF SPACE. —DENISE C. TIRE PLUGS, A SMALL FLASHLIGHT, FIRST AID KIT. DON’T LET YOUR TRIP END PREMATURELY BECAUSE YOU FORGOT THE BASICS. —DAVID Y. LEAVE AT LEAST HALF THE STUFF YOU THOUGHT YOU WANTED. THEN TRY TO LEAVE HALF OF WHAT’S LEFT. —JEFF P. OF ALL THE DEALERS THAT I’VE VISITED, NONE HAS HAD AN ISSUE MAILING A SHIRT TO ME. I PAID THE POSTAGE AND NEVER HAD TO CALL BACK TO ASK. —TODD L. REMEMBER, IF YOU TAKE TOO MUCH STUFF, YOU CAN ALWAYS MAIL IT HOME. —BRIAN B.
Look where you want the bike to go, not where it is
If you’re hard off the gas at high rpms, the bike will engine brake and you won’t get a smooth entry into the turn.”
“Focus on the farthest point through the corner that you can see. Look there and your bike will follow. And don’t be afraid to use the whole lane, especially as you link turns.”
Push your bars for turns
“You’ve got to understand counter steering, which is when you push the inside bar and pull on the outside bar. It makes cornering much easier, especially with big bikes. You don’t have to fight the bike. Instead, you can relax. A relaxed rider is a good rider.”
Keep your speed
“You never want to throttle into a corner, but you also don’t want to be totally off the throttle. Speed should be consistent. That means being aware of engine braking, too.
011
BONUS LESSON FROM A STUNT RIDER: WHAT TO DO IN A CRASH, FROM A MAN WHO CRASHES ON PURPOSE
Even the safest drivers can be in accidents. If you find yourself in a situation where you’re going down, Dryden’s biggest piece of advice is to let go of the bike. “People hold onto the bike for way too long,” he says. “Once you get close to making contact with the pavement, you need to let go. The pavement will do the work and pull you off. When I crash for a scene, my main priority is making sure I don’t get tangled up in the bike.”

WHY WE RIDE Left: Even the police escorts joined in on this group shot in Richmond, Virginia, during 2017’s International Female Ride Day®. Below: Founder Vicki Gray. Opposite: Women from all over the world post pictures of their IFRD experiences.
INTERNATIONAL FEMALE RIDE DAY ®
Every year since 2007, International Female Ride Day® has brought together women from all over the world. They don’t share the same background, and they usually don’t share the same asphalt. But they do all share the same love of riding— and the same goal of encouraging even more women to join them. What It Is
A globally synchronised ride day that recognises and celebrates female riders from any country and from any club, no matter what they ride. This year’s was in partnership with Indian Motorcycle. When It Happens
Because of the pandemic, this year’s IFRD was August 22. But next year it’ll be back on its regular date, the first Saturday in May. Check motoress.com for details.
How It Started
Although Vicki Gray’s father didn’t ride, he did fly planes. He loved the speed, the turns, the rush. And so did Vicki (above). Instead of in the air, though, Gray found those thrills on a motorcycle. She rode her first bike at age 16, and she never looked back. Soon she was racing bikes, and then, teaching others as an instructor. She knew there were other female riders out there. There had to be. But it was hard to see them. They were rarely featured in
012
dealership brochures, and there were few communities for female riders to interact. In 1998, she decided to fix that problem by starting a website—the first was called Race Girl, then she created Motoress—as a resource and a way to provide support for female riders. On the site, you’ll find riding news, tips and techniques, and bike and gear reviews. But Gray still wanted to do more. As she saw it, women’s opportunities to ride were limited, and that meant that the opportunities for other women to see
women riding were limited. “It’s not easy,” she says. “If you take a woman who has a career, a partner, children, a house, things to do, it’s very hard for motorcycling to become a priority.” So, she created a day that would make it one. The first International Female Ride Day® took place in the summer of 2007. “I wanted to stop the cycle of positioning women as if we were just starting to ride. Women always have ridden,” she says. The problem was, there weren’t often seen riding. Gray saw an easy solution: “I asked women to just get out there—to show everyone how many of us there are.” The first year was limited to riders in Canada and the U.S., but in the second year other countries joined in. The U.K. Australia. Kenya. Each year after that, female riders in other countries got word of the day and joined in, too. Thirteen years later, the movement is worldwide. “Women are doing the very same
thing I am, at the very same time, all over the world. It almost gives you goose bumps. It’s a thrilling connection,” she says. “International Female Ride Day® has propelled a lot of women forward into motorcycling. They see an example. That was the whole purpose. I tell women that they are role models. And their message, as it’s always been, is inclusion and diversity. It’s strong, it’s powerful, and it just keeps going,” Gray says. “It’s unbelievable.” How To Get Involved
To look for a ride in your area next year, contact your local dealership or check Facebook. If you don’t see one, no problem. Just start your own. It doesn’t matter where you ride, for how long, or with whom. Grab a friend or go solo. And be sure to post a pic from your ride on social media and tag it either #IFRD or #InternationalFemaleRideDay.

This year, we created all-new custom paint schemes— deep, subtle, and striking colours, like this blacked-out Vintage Dark Horse that’s available for the first time ever. We introduced innovative new features, like headlights that shine farther and brighter, and move with you as you turn, and seats that cool you down with the same system they use to warm you up. These little details will change the way you ride, and make you love your Indian Motorcycle even more than you already do.

A LOOK INSIDE THE PAINT PROCESS SCOUT BOBBER IN MAROON METALLIC SMOKE
Five exclusive factory paint schemes for the Scout and Roadmaster were launched this year. A.J. Konchar ( below), senior graphics designer at Polaris, explains the process of creating and—just as fun—naming the new colours. Two big themes running through Indian Motorcycle are heritage and craftsmanship. We want to create colours that showcase that, but also colours you’re not going to see every day. We look all over for inspiration—at the motorcycling industry, auto, apparel, everything we are seeing. We send guys to custom bike shows in the U.S. and Europe. We need to see what people are doing. It truly is a beast that never sleeps. I’ll drive down the road and see something out the window and yell to my wife, “Take a picture!” You might see something as simple as a coffee mug that has a cool finish on it, and you go, “Ooh, I wonder if that would work.” You can take inspiration from anything, and then you give it to our painter in industrial design, who mixes it up as a custom paint. Different people are interested in different things, so it’s all about identifying which person goes with which bike and figuring out a colour scheme that will grab onto that audience. Some of the themes come from our 120-year history. We can pull things from way back in the past and update them to give people a throwback. For one of the 2021 Scout Icons, that was more of a two-tone theme, with pinstriping around it. We can play with the pinstriping a lot: You can have something that blends in, something metallic that sparkles a bit. It’s a nice way to get a little accent, and it’s all handapplied. People are getting in there and putting it on. We talk a lot about first read versus second read. In the first read, you get the overall impression of the bike. The chrome, paint, and motor all work together. The second read is when you see the details, like two tones, pinstripes, size, and placement. That’s really cool, when someone goes, “Oh, I didn’t notice the matte or the pinstripe.” You see that sparkle in their eyes. They’re excited. The more they look, the more they notice. That’s my favorite part. Naming the colours isn’t bad, either. For that, we all meet at a local bar, buy a few pitchers, and start coming up with ideas.

HEADLIGHTS THAT SHOW YOU MORE… It’s an easy concept: The more road you can see, the better your ride will be. “We had to make sure the punch, which is how far the light shines, and the spread, which is how wide the light goes, were great,” says Dan Peterson, Indian Motorcycle’s product development lead. This year marks the introduction of the Pathfinder Adaptive LED Headlight and the smaller Pathfinder S LED Driving Lights, which give you the clearest and widest
possible picture of any road. “Three low-beam lenses get you the best combination of punch and spread” without blinding riders coming in the opposite direction. And when you have the road to yourself, you can see every bit of it, thanks to a high beam that “gives great spread, and a secondary long high beam,” he says. “A really good LED headlight has a 240-meter punch. Ours is 270. It’s unbelievable.”
018
The lights are available in both chrome (top row) and black ( bottom row).
…AND FOLLOW EVERY MOVE When you take a turn, typical headlights take a moment to catch up, shining on the side of the road until you’ve straightened back out. “Your eyes want to go to the brightest part of the light, and we want that to be the apex of your turn,” Peterson says. The Pathfinder Adaptive LED Headlight (available for Thunder Stroke models) and Pathfinder S LED Driving Lights (available for all Heavyweight models) automatically
adjust to shine where you need to see most. “As you lean into a turn, we dim the punch of the headlight and the lights on the high side, and light the apex with the first adaptive light. As you get deeper, it turns on the other 2, 3, 4, 5 lights.” Thanks to a software designed specifically for this system, the lights come on smoothly and gradually, giving you extreme performance with no distractions.

ALONG WITH A 116-CUBIC-INCH ENGINE, REMOTELOCKING SADDLEBAGS, AND A PUSH-BUTTON POWER WINDSHIELD, EVERY 2021 ROADMASTER LIMITED COMES STANDARD WITH A NEW FEATURE: THE HEATED AND COOLED CLIMACOMMAND ROGUE SEAT (SEE NEX T PAGE). 021
A SEAT THAT COOLS YOU DOWN JUST AS WELL AS IT WARMS YOU UP Whether it’s so cold that your body feels like a block of ice, or so hot you start to think you’ll melt into the pavement, these seats will take care of you. And they’ll do it with technology that’s completely new: “When you look at a cooled seat in a car, it has perforations. We can’t do that in a motorcycle,” Peterson says. With a seat that’s constantly exposed, moisture would get into the system every time it rained, and road dirt would pretty quickly plug up those holes. Without
that option, Indian Motorcycle engineers had to get creative. “We have thermoelectric modules in the seats—one for the passenger and one for the rider. Both are connected to graphene, a conductive, flexible material. If you pull current across the graphene, it will cool. If you push current across the same path, it heats,” he says. One seat, two temperatures. Riding season just got a whole lot longer—and a whole lot more comfortable.
022
GIVE YOUR PASSENGER THE BACKREST THEY DESERVE For short rides, the passenger behind you doesn’t usually worry about comfort. They’re just holding on and enjoying the thrill. But spending hours with nothing behind you for support is a recipe for exhaustion and back pain. The new Low-Profile Quick-Release Passenger Sissy Bar and Low-Profile Passenger Pad goes on and off without tools, doesn’t break the bank, and won’t ruin the sleek lines of your bike. The low-profile design incorporates chrome styling details and a black vinyl pad cover to match the rest of your bike. You’ll both be happy.

I grew up locally here in Albury/ Wodonga, adventuring the countryside on a mountain bike. I started at Blacklocks Lavington 3 years ago, previously working in Real Estate. I have gone from driving to finding a new found love of motorcycles, and have recently achieved getting my motorcycle license. Whilst working for Blacklocks I have had the chance to ride a diverse range of brands, and am proud to say my favourite Indian Motorcycle is the Iconic Scout Bobber.
My favourite Indian would have to be the Scout Bobber but I’m a lover of all motorcycles.

Previously running our former Melbourne dealership, Roman has recently relocated to Cairns and is now leading the charge in setting up an all-new Indian Motorcycle dealership and rider community in Far-North Queensland. Being a keen rider, he’s biting at the bit to jump on an Indian and head out to see what Far-North Queensland has to offer. You’ll be seeing him around town on a Scout, FTR, Chief or Chieftain which are his personal favourites. Make sure you drop in for a coffee and get him up to speed on all the best riding roads in the region! Luke MacKenzie Service Technician

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE EMERALD MEET OUR SMALL BUT EFFECTIVE TEAM AT INDIAN MOTORCYCLE EMERALD!
Ross Drayton Dealer Principle
Ross has been around the V Twin industry for many many decades and has had a passion for not just riding but customising and understanding what a rider is really looking for in their motorcycle. Connecting new riders to the right model is paramount to not only a great purchase but ensuring the correct rider safety goals can be achieved. Throughout his riding career Ross has ridden across many nations and mixed with many cultures all bound together by one passion and that is their motorcycle. Ross believes that, “purchasing an Indian motorcycle is not simply buying a motorbike, it’s becoming part of the whole Indian culture that goes back to 1901 when it all began. It’s not motorcycles, it’s not leather jackets, it’s not about rallies and just riding, it’s all those thing combined that create the passion and soul that is Indian. No one does it better than Indian.” Ross is looking forward to “working with customers on building and developing their new ride, caring for their existing one, or just meeting our Indian brothers and sisters. We are a family and we understand what that means, so come on in and see us anytime.”
