Australia focuses on Indian diaspora for economic success

Indian businesses abroad are being lured to Australia under a new and exciting Australian Government initiative. The Global Business and Talent Attraction Taskforce has been established to create quality Australian jobs by attracting high value businesses and exceptional talent to Australia to help turbo-charge the economy.

The Taskforce brings together experts from the Commonwealth and State and Territory Governments as part of the Government’s JobMaker Plan. Special Envoy, Peter Verwer AO, who leads the Task force, says Australia is seeking trailblazers, entrepreneurs and proven enterprises in the future-focused industries of Health and Life Sciences, Financial Services, including FinTech, and Advanced Manufacturing and its many streams.

“We are focused on top-tier businesses and individuals who can bring their networks, energy and ideas to our shores as soon as possible,” Mr Verwer says.

“We will be leveraging our networks, including the Indian diaspora, to help identify companies and individuals who can significantly contribute to Australia’s economic recovery by filling supply chain.”

Eligible companies will have access to fast track visas with a streamlined pathway to permanent residency and a personalised end-to-end service for relocating to Australia.

Senator Paul Scarr says the taskforce is a further opportunity to progress the relationship between India and Australia.

“The taskforce is an exciting opportunity for those in the Australian Indian diaspora to contact Indian businesses and individuals and promote this once in a lifetime opportunity,” Senator Scarr says.

“I am incredibly excited and passionate about the taskforce because it allows the two countries to continue to build important relationships and bring more Indian talent to Australian shores.”

Senator Scarr says the taskforce follows growing interest in India, including An India Economic Strategy to 2035 report, which reveals the untapped potential that Australia can benefit from.

“The Australian Indian diaspora is over 750,000 strong and the fastest growing diaspora in Australia,” Senator Scarr says.

“This diaspora will have a big role to play in the partnerships of the future between India and Australia. It is very much part of Australia’s economic strategy and success.

“The report also tells us India’s financial services will grow to 2035 and that India is an emerging hub for research and development. Australia should build on its business relationships with India and bring talent to Australia, so everyone wins.”

The report also follows a successful virtual India-Australia Leaders’ Summit between Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

The meeting led to the creation of a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) between Australia and India. The CSP takes the bilateral relationship between India and Australia to a new level of cooperation, based on mutual understanding, trust, common interests and the shared values of democracy and the rule of law. The CSP also means the Foreign and Defence Ministers will meet at least every two years.
