Brisbane’s dining scene is reaching new heights—quite literally—with the official opening of Mulga Bill’s Café on the Kangaroo Point Bridge and the upcoming launch of Stilts, the city’s first above-water restaurant.

Since its opening on December 15, the Kangaroo Point Bridge has quickly become a vital active transport link, with an average of 10,900 trips taken over it daily. Now, the addition of Mulga Bill’s at the bridge’s CBD landing gives residents and visitors even more reason to visit. The 60seat café offers casual dining from breakfast through dinner, featuring fresh coffee, pastries, wood-fired pizza, steak, and seafood—all with stunning river views.

Tassis Group, the well-known hospitality operator behind Brisbane hotspots like Opa, Longwang, and Rich and Rare, has brought the two new venues to life. Group owner Michael Tassis said the opportunity to create dining spaces on such an iconic bridge was “simply unmissable.”

“Brisbane is a city that thrives on its connection to the river, and our venues will offer a truly unique way to experience it,” Tassis said. “Mulga Bill’s is a relaxed, all-day spot where everyone—from bridge walkers to families and city workers—can grab a great coffee or woodfired pizza to take away or dine in while soaking in the riverfront views.”

The café’s name, Mulga Bill’s, is inspired by Banjo Paterson’s famous poem Mulga Bill’s Bicycle, reflecting the bridge’s role in promoting active transport and reducing congestion in Brisbane. Meanwhile, Stilts, an elegant 130seat restaurant perched above the bridge’s CBD-end, will soon open its doors. Specializing in modern Australian cuisine, Stilts will serve premium steaks, fresh seafood, and a selection of top Australian wines. Its design pays homage to Queensland’s iconic stilt-based architecture and will feature a fine dining room, alfresco seating, and full lift access.

Brisbane City Council’s Transport Chair Ryan Murphy highlighted the significance of the new dining destinations, saying they will help transform the bridge into one of the city’s premier attractions.

“Brisbane has some incredible restaurants along the river’s edge, but the Kangaroo Point Bridge will deliver the city’s first above-water dining destinations,” Murphy said. “The opening of Mulga Bill’s and Stilts will create more for people to see and do on our beautiful Brisbane River.”

Murphy also emphasized the bridge’s role in supporting Brisbane’s vision as Australia’s lifestyle capital.

“Brisbane is renowned for being a river city, and these new dining destinations will provide a space for people to enjoy Brisbane’s incredible lifestyle while taking in panoramic views of the river, CBD, and Story Bridge,” he said.

“The Kangaroo Point Bridge will be the perfect destination for residents and visitors alike before, during, and after the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

The launch of Mulga Bill’s and Stilts marks the completion of the $288-million Kangaroo Point Bridge precinct, part of Brisbane City Council’s broader Bridges for Brisbane initiative. The bridge is the third active transport bridge to open in 2024, following the Breakfast Creek / Yowoggera Bridge and the Neville Bonner Bridge.

With its unique riverfront location and world-class dining experiences, the Kangaroo Point Bridge is set to become one of Brisbane’s most iconic destinations—blending lifestyle, connectivity, and culinary excellence in one breathtaking setting.
