an international furore. Several Muslim nations, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Indonesia and Iran, as well as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation have officially protested their statements and demanded an apology. However, the chilling threat issued by AQIS has alerted the security agencies in the country. The letter also mentioned Ghazwa-e-Hind -- the battle for India -- in which they said victory of Muslims in the country. "At the same time, we bring tidings of death and destruction to the rulers of India, of
executions and hangings, of imprisonment and being bound with chains," read the letter. Meanwhile, suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma was provided security by the Delhi Police in the wake of death threats she has received over her controversial remarks. She had lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police on May 27 alleging that she has been receiving death threats and target hatred against her. Based on this complaint, an FIR was registered under sections 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation), 507 (Criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) and 509 (Word,
gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code at the Special Cell police station against unidentified people. However, during the probe, Sharma, yet again lodged a complaint against certain persons regarding promoting enmity. "After examining the said complaint, section 153 (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) of the IPC was added in this case," Delhi Police spokesperson Suman Nalwa said.

New Delhi, June 3 (IANS): Welcoming over 12,000 millionaires in 2019, Australia has emerged as the most preferred migration destination for high net-worth individuals worldwide. Australia has one of the most conducive environments in the world to do business and has a very strong and robust economy. Queensland, Australia, is emerging as the preferred destination for migrants due to its excellent handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and opportunities in the education, minerals, renewable, and agriculture sectors. The interim Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement further boosts the strong relationship between the two countries. The agreement will eliminate tariffs on over 95 percent of the goods and services on Indian exports to Australia. Australia will also gain sizable market access in India, with tariffs being eliminated on more than 85 percent of the Australian goods and services exports to India. At the end of June 2019, 6,60,350 Indian-born people were living in Australia, more than twice the number (307,590) as on June 30, 2009, and this is further expected to increase. This makes the Indian-born population the third largest migrant community in Australia. Abhinav Bhatia, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner -South Asia, Trade & Investment Queensland, addressed the audience, including senior business leaders, at a seminar organised by Phoenix Business Advisory. Explaining the decision-making factors during
migration and why Queensland is the preferred choice, he stated, "With a growing economy and excellent quality of life, Queensland is a choice many immigrants and Australians are making to put down roots. Due to the Queensland government's successful handling of the Covid- 19 pandemic, Queensland has seen the highest interstate migration in the last 20 years. "Brisbane (the capital city of Queensland) being the host city for the 2032 Olympics and Paralympic Games, has provided a catalyst leading to various developmental projects and business opportunities in many industries. Furthermore, Queensland has closer ties with India than other Australian states, contributing 60.7 per cent to national export value in 2021. These factors and proactive support by Migration Queensland make us the ideal choice for Indian investors and innovators." The event offered a platform for interested individuals to interact, which guided entrepreneurs with information about important policies, visas, and migration procedures to set up their business. Being well connected with the rest of the world, Queensland provides an excellent opportunity for the Indian business community. Moreover, migrants can access top-quality education and healthcare by making the state their home. Under the Queensland Business Nomination programme, innovators and investors can apply for migration to Queensland by exploring the various business opportunities.

And the overall environment has been deteriorating."
Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), June 9 (IANS): Darul Uloom Deoband, one of the largest Islamic seminaries in India, has sought strict legal action against all those who have made objectionable statements against Islam to spread 'hatred' in the country. This statement comes days after the Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind and All India Muslim Personal Law Board made a similar demand. Darul Uloom Vice-Chancellor, Maulana Mufti Abul Qasim Nomani, has issued a statement saying, "I strongly condemn the insulting remarks on our beloved Prophet. Religious sentiments of
the followers of any faith cannot be provoked in the name of freedom of expression. Insulting the Prophet will not be tolerated by Muslims, in India or abroad." He urged the government to "frame a law to deal with cases where religious symbols of Muslims are targeted". Nomani further said, "India is a secular country and people here have been living together for centuries. These communal and extremist elements are not only harming the country's social harmony but also disturbing the nation's secular fabric and ethos."
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, a socio-religious organisation with a large Muslim following across the subcontinent, had said that "insulting the founder of Islam has deeply hurt the feelings of Muslims around the world". "We hope that the law enforcement agencies will take legal action against the perpetrators without further delay," said Jamiat's General Secretary, Maulana Hakimuddin Qasmi. The move follows several Arab and Islamic countries condemning the controversial remarks made against Prophet Muhammad by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and the party's (now expelled) Delhi unit media head Naveen Jindal.

NIO to conduct drilling operation on Ram Setu site Panaji, June 8 (IANS): The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) will conduct a drilling operation at the site of the Ram Setu in the seas off Rameshwaram island for collection of samples to study the phenomenon of sand accumulation on the site, the Central government institute's Director Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh said on June 8. Speaking to reporters near Panaji, Singh also said that the sea level rise and accumulation of sand has covered the site of the Setu. "Since then sea level has increased and covered a majority of the portion. Lot of sand has covered everything. So what we are going to do is undertake a drilling project in the area, collect the sample and the more samples we get from the areas, more results
can come and we will be able to tell something about the Ram Setu," Singh said. The director of the Goa-based NIO, which functions under the aegis of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, also said that the agency, which along with the Archaeological Survey of India, has been tasked with conducting scientific exploration and research on the Setu, will be able to make headway on the project over the next two years. "We have conducted two field trips (so far). We have done geophysical surveys already. With the geophysical survey, we have tried to locate the location where it could be, because right now there is sand everywhere, it is submerged under sand. Sea level keeps on increasing. Sea level earlier was down," Singh also said.

Sydney, June 8 (IANS): US space agency NASA is set to launch three rockets into space from a private space port in Australia for scientific research. The rockets will be launched between June 26 and July 12 from the Arnhem Space Centre, which is owned and run by Equatorial Launch Australia, the Guardian reported. time. "Soaring fertilizer costs and access to farm labour and imported machinery will continue to challenge many Australian farm businesses, but Australia has shown throughout the pandemic that we are a reliable and resilient food producer and exporter," Jared Greenville, executive director of ABARES, said on June 7. "Reduced confidence in international markets is a concern for Australian producers
as they are central to both global food security and the longterm prosperity of Australian agriculture." Beef and veal were Australia's leading agricultural export products, at a value of A$8.4 billion in the 2021 financial year. Aside from these, the country is also a popular exporter of wheat, the export value of which equalled A$6.8 billion in the same year.
Australia’s largest retail group to discontinue reusable plastic bags Canberra, June 3 (IANS): Following bans on single-use plastic bags across the nation, Australia's largest supermarket chain, Woolworths, has taken the transition one step further by pledging to phase out all types of plastic bags in their stores. The company has pledged that its supermarket stores and retail subsidiary, BIG W, would phase out all plastic bags across its Australian stores by June 2023, the change estimated to remove 9,000 tonnes of plastic from circulation annually, reports Xinhua news agency. While making the announcement on June 3, Managing Director of Woolworths Supermarkets, Natalie Davis, said the reusable bags were originally introduced to help customers adjust to the removal of single-use plastic bags. "We've seen a huge shift in
shopping habits since we stopped giving out single-use plastic bags, with eight out of 10 customers now bringing their own bags from home," she said. "The reusable plastic bags have played their part and now it's time to do away with selling plastic shopping bags at our checkouts for good." On Wednesday, New South Wales (NSW) became the last state or territory to prohibit the use of single-use plastic bags, as the state looks to phase out all "problematic", single-use plastics. Over the following 12 months, a slew of "problematic" plastic items would join the ban, including plastic straws, plastic cutlery, cotton buds and other single-use plastic containers. "Single-use plastic items and packaging make up 60 percent of all litter in NSW," said NSW Environment Minister James
Griffin while announcing the ban on June 1. "By stopping the supply of problematic plastic in the first place, we're helping prevent it from entering our environment as litter, or going into landfills." The bans in NSW are part of an "NSW Plastic Action Plan" that aims to stop 2.7 billion items of plastic from entering the environment over the next 20 years.

Canberra, June 2 (IANS): Australian researchers have discovered a previously unknown koala population in a major boost to conservation efforts. In a study published on June 2, Australian National University (ANU) researchers revealed the existence of a "significant" koala population in the Kosciuszko National Park, a colder, more arid landscape than traditional koala habitats, reports Xinhua news agency.

Wales (NSW) National Parks and Wildlife Service, observed male koalas at 14 sites in the park, prompting hopes that the area could become a refuge for the species. "These findings are important because of the area's elevation, which we hope will make the populations more resilient to climate change," ANU ecologist David Lindenmayer said in a media release. "Kosciuszko is going to be one of the last places in NSW to really experience some of those extreme temperatures. And so it will be ... a really important refuge for beasties like that, that could otherwise be quite climate sensitive. I'm pretty excited about what we're finding,"
it's reassuring that we might have more of a hope than we originally thought." Australia's federal government in February officially listed the koala as endangered after a decline in population numbers due to land clearing and bushfires. Earlier in the year, it announced an additional A$50 million ($35 million) in funding over the next four years for koala recovery programmes. Experts have warned that without major intervention the species could go extinct by 2050. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, 60,000 koalas perished in the catastrophic 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires in Australia.

This is going to be the first time that NASA is launching rockets from a commercial facility outside the US, and the first NASA rockets launched from Australia since 1995. The mission aims to investigate heliophysics, astrophysics and planetary science phenomena only observable from the southern hemisphere, the report said. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese arrived in Darwin after a two-day visit to Indonesia on June 8 night. "We can trace Australia's celebrated connection to the space industry back to the 1950s
and as a nation we have to build on that legacy," Albanese was quoted as saying. "This project will bring together global and local industry to take Australia's space sector into a new era," he added. According to NASA's Heliophysics Division director Nicky Fox, the launches more than 300 kilometres into space would "allow us to explore how a star's light can influence a planet's habitability among other things." "This commercial launch range in Australia opens up new access to the Southern Hemisphere's night sky, expanding the possibilities for future science missions," NASA associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate Thomas Zurbuchen said in a statement.
Former ‘MasterChef’ winner, season 14 judge Andy Allen talks about his life journey Mumbai, June 6 (IANS): Andy Allen, who won the fourth season of 'Masterchef Australia', is back on the show 'MasterChef Australia: Fans & Favourites' this time seated on the judge's chair. The culinary artiste recently looked back at his journey from winning the show to judging the new talents' skills at work. He calls his journey "pretty wild" as he says, "Winning the competition was actually a big surprise. I didn't know what to do with the win." Andy, who was one exam away from becoming an electrician, headed to 'Masterchef Australia 4' where he met guests chefs Mark Labrooy and Darren Robertson and with them, he took a role down at Three Blue Ducks Pop Up at Falls Creek in 2013. Recollecting the events after season 4, Allen shares, "But then I was lucky enough to link up with the guys from the Three Blue Ducks (Australian) which gave me a pathway in the industry - and that then ultimately led to me being asked back as a judge in the current format." The new season brings back 12 popular contestants including a few season winners from previous editions like Julie Goodwin, Sashi Cheliah, Billie McKay, Minoli De Silva, Tommy Pham, Alvin Quah, Michael Weldon, Mindy Woods, Christina Batista, Sarah Todd, John Carasig and Aldo Ortado, where they compete against each other for the prize money of 250,000 dollars.
One would wonder how MasterChef Australia would engage the audience in terms of entertainment and imparting knowledge on new skills. Well Andy has a straight up answer in his sleeve, "I think having 12 favourites back immediately gives it entertainment value. They've been there before, people know them and love them, and now they have to really show off their industry skills against 12 unbelievably good home cooks the fans." For him the artistic expression in food begins with the flavour as he says, "It's all about flavour. You can have all the bells and whistles but if an artistic creation doesn't taste good, it's lost." 'MasterChef Australia: Fans & Favourites', is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

The Prime Minister met with a Tamil asylum seeker family who returned to central Queensland after more than four years in immigration detention. Priya Nadaraja and her family could personally thank Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for their safe and legal return to Biloela. The Nadesalingams are still to be given permanent residency, but PM Albanese sees "no impediment" to that. Anthony Albanese had taken his senior cabinet to regional Queensland last week in Gladstone and met with the Nadesalingams, who arrived in Biloela on Friday afternoon. Priya, Nades and their two Australian-born daughters,
Kopika and Tharnicaa, are presently living in the central Queensland town on bridging visas granted by the new Labor government. After Labor won the election the family was granted bridging visas, allowing them to return to Biloela. Nades Murugappan and his wife, Priya, married in Australia after arriving in the country by boat and in 2014 settled in Biloela where their daughters were born. In March 2018 the Australian Border Force (ABF) removed the family from Biloela after Priya's visa expired and Nades' claim of refugee status was rejected. They have spent the last four years in detention in Melbourne, on Christmas Island

Australia reports record flu cases in May Of those, 47,860, or 54 per cent,
were reported in the two weeks leading up to June 5 as winter set in, reports Xinhua news agency.
Canberra, June 12 (IANS) Australia has reported a record 65,770 flu cases in May, which marked an increase of more than 100 per cent from the previous record set in May 2019, authorities said on Sunday. As of June 5, 87,989 total influenza cases have been logged in Australia in 2022, according to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS).
"From mid-April 2022, the weekly number of notifications of laboratory-confirmed influenza reported in Australia has exceeded the five year average," the NNDSS update said. There have been 27 influenzaassociated deaths in Australia in 2022 and 733 cases have been treated in hospital, 6 per cent of whom were admitted directly to intensive care. Experts have warned that, with restrictions now lifted, Australia is facing an influenza resurgence over winter which, paired with a spike in Covid cases, could put significant pressure on the health system.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese meets Biloella family and most recently in Perth, amid ongoing court challenges to any move to deport them. "The effect of my intervention enables the family to return to Biloela, where they can reside lawfully in the community on bridging visas while they work towards the resolution of their immigration status, in accordance with Australian law," Treasurer Jim Chalmers said in a statement.
"This government remains committed to Operation Sovereign Borders and keeping people smugglers out of business." The coalition had ruled out move to allow the family to stay in Australia despite
the children being born in the country, arguing that doing so would encourage more arrivals to the country by boat. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had said soon after winning the elections that he believed "you can have strong borders without being weak on humanity". "These two young girls were born here in Australia. Nades is a meat worker in Biloela. We struggle to get people who are meat workers. We import temporary labor into our meat works," he had said back then. "And they want, the community want, this family back to Biloela. And that would be an entirely appropriate outcome."

EDITORIAL
From the editor's desk Why a Quad line-up is a must to counter
Nupur Sharma is symptom of a deeper divide
Nupur Sharma India is presently in the middle of an intense public backlash—protests and riots, largely spearheaded by the Muslim community, along with a very displeased United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Oman, and Iraq amongst over two dozenMuslim-majority nations. At the centre of the storm is Nupur Sharma, a Bhartiya Janta Party spokesperson, and her party colleague Naveen Jindal. Reportedly, on 26 May Nupur Sharma made a comment in a heated TV debate on the Gyanvapi Mosque dispute about Prophet Mohammad, which she claims was a quotationfrom the Quran and the Hadith which the Muslim community has deemed very offensive. Jindal also shared a tweet later. In response, though much later, the BJP suspended Nupur and expelled Jindal from the party saying, “The BJP strongly denounces insults of any religious personalities of any religion. The BJP is also against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy”.India's ambassador to Qatar, Deepak Mittal labelled Nupur and Naveen as "fringe elements' ' who did not represent the Indian government views. Interestingly, the non-spontaneity of the public backlash, which did not start immediately after the remarks were made, but after India apparently buckled under growing protests in Qatar, UAQ, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations tells a different story. Soon protests spread across India, prompting a tough law and order response, especially in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where scores have been arrested, and many rioters have had their illegal properties bulldozed. While Nupur withdrew her comments saying that it was merely a quotation, and in response to insult being hurled at Lord Shiva, the public anger seems to have abetted little. One must bear in mind that since a Shivling has been found in the water tank of the Gyanvapi Mosque, at the orders of a local court, social media has been flooded with memes and posts by celebrities, activists, politicians and general public to mock the Shivling, one including

the photo of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. So, one must ask are Nupur’s comments really the source of the backlash, or is there something else that meets the eye? A closer look at India’s domestic politics will demonstrate that Nupur Sharma is merely a symbol of a much deeper divide between the Narendra Modi government and the Muslim community and the opposition, since May 2014. This divide has only deepened with the passage of time as a range of policy decisions were taken by the Modi government. For starters, when Narendra Modi came to power with 282 seats in May 2014 ending the coalition era politics, his detractors were quick to dismiss the verdict saying only 31% had voted for him, therefore it is not a popular mandate. Ever since, every decision of the government has been mocked and dismissed, be it the Swatch Bharat campaign or the Jan Dhan, PM Awaas or Ujjwala schemes. His foreign visits were mocked as “hugplomacy”. Modi was being compared with Adolf Hitler. The left-liberals critics, overlooking the majority principle in a democratic polity, labelled the Modi government as Fascist and authoritarian and perpetuating majoritarianism. Calling names became the new norm in the opposition ranks as BJP’s national rise continued ridingModi’s mass appeal and a slew of the government’s policy measures. Between 2014 and 2019 the party added another ten crore voters to its party base as a large number of public welfare schemes took effect. The BJP also swept elections in numerous states including Hayyana, Jharkhand, Goa, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam and of course Uttar Pradesh. But what seems to have irked his detractors and the Muslim community, particularly the most, has been the Triple Talaq Act, Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, Citizenship Amendment Act, and counter terrorism operations across the LoC against terrorist camps in the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and Balakot. A defiant and muscular standoff with China in the Ladakh sector further augmented Modi’s leadership and national image which received a further boost in the wake of the Supreme Court judgement to build the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. All these policy measures proved instrumental in delivering success to the BJP in state elections and also in the 2019 general elections taking its tally from 283 to 303 further deflating Modi critics’ wits and spirits. As seen during the anti CAA/

received and an important South Pacific state, Fiji, joined the initiative as the 14th member. In the context of Chinese efforts, Fiji joining IPEF is a strategic signal.
The South Pacific region consists of many smaller Island states that enjoy vast exclusive economic zones (EEZs). The region is vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Due to its strategic location, it is emerging as a key theatre in the great power politics. The South Pacific has traditionally been dominated by Australia. France maintains control over some territories (like New Caledonia) in the region and is an important player in regional geopolitics. The United States (US) too holds considerable interest in the strategic affairs of this region. Now, China is making efforts to gain a foothold in the South Pacific. The growing Chinese interest has forced Australia and the US into action. As some regional states flirt with China, the great power politics is sharpening in the South Pacific. Three recent developments help us understand the intensifying strategic rivalries: first, Solomon Islands signed an agreement with China. The leaked draft of the agreement suggests that China has been granted an important role in the security-related matters in the Solomon Islands. More importantly, the increasing presence in the Solomon Islands will facilitate the greater Chinese role in the South Pacific. The South Pacific has long been a focal point of competition for recognition between China and Taiwan as well. Slowly but steadily, China has managed to persuade some regional states to switch the recognition. The Solomon Islands has switched the recognition from Taiwan to China in 2019. Therefore, the increasing forays by China in the region are designed to not only expand its own influence but undercut Taiwan's presence. Second, in the last week of May, the US along with three Quad partners (India, Japan, Australia) and other nine countries (including seven from ASEAN) unveiled the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). So far, the IPEF has been wellNRC protests in Shaheen Bagh in Delhi and other parts of IndiaMuslim majority countries have continued to add fuel to the fire and supported public protests in India against the government. Many outfits such as the Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India at the

The IPEF is significant as the Indo-Pacific strategies of the four Quad countries lacked an economic dimension. In fact, the US had withdrawn from the Trans-Pacific Partnership whereas India refused to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The IPEF signals the willingness of these countries to work together in shaping the economic future of the region as well. And finally, China's foreign minister Wang Yi visited the South Pacific region. During the visit, he sought to persuade the South Pacific Island states to sign a wide-ranging, new agreement. The agreement would have dramatically expanded the Chinese presence and influence in the region, especially in the domain of defence and security. However, many Island States refused to go along. As per reports, Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea and Samoa were concerned about the Chinese proposals. All three developments have received considerable attention in the strategic circles across the Indo-Pacific region. The newlyelected Australian government, led by Anthony Albanese of the Labour Party, has been hard-pressed into action as the rising challenge of China in the backyard poses difficult questions for the Australian foreign and security policy. Some strategic analysts have argued that China's willingness to expand its strategic presence in the South Pacific is a direct response to the new, trilateral defence partnership between Australia, United Kingdom (UK) and the US, known as the AUKUS. The AUKUS will help Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarines. It entails a longterm defence relationship which has bound the three countries tightly together. However, ChinaAustralia relationship has been deteriorating before the signing of AUKUS. For now, China's efforts have not succeeded due to the lack of consensus among the South Pacific countries. China has released a position paper. China's foreign ministry spokesperson
forefront of anti-government protests have been labelled as “Extremist organisations” by the Kerala High Court. Today, Nupur Sharma lives under a strong police protection given the constant threat for rape and life to her and her family from a large number of groups
has said that "China will continue to maintain close communication with relevant parties, give full play to the China-PICs [Pacific Island Countries] Foreign Ministers' Meeting, and build an even closer community of shared future between China and PICs." It is clear that China will continue to make efforts to expand its presence and persuade the South Pacific states to agree on Chinese proposals. However, what is surprising is that, despite the known concerns about the strategic implications of China's growing presence, some states in the South Pacific are willing to consider Chinese proposals. Perhaps, just like Island states of the Indian Ocean, South Pacific countries are also playing one major player off against the other to obtain maximum benefits. The growing Chinese presence has already alerted Australia and the US to pay greater attention to the region. The joint statement released after the Tokyo Quad summit in May contains a paragraph outlining the approach of Quad countries towards the Pacific Island countries. The statement notes that, "we will further strengthen our cooperation with Pacific Island countries, to enhance their economic well-being, strengthen health infrastructure and environmental resilience, to improve their maritime security and sustain their fisheries, to provide sustainable infrastructure, to bolster educational opportunities, and to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change, which pose especially serious challenges for this region." The Quad countries are "committed to working together to address the needs of Pacific Island partners. We reaffirmed our support for Pacific Islands Forum unity and for Pacific regional security frameworks." It is clear that to contain the expanding Chinese power, Quad countries would be necessitated to work together, individually and collectively, in the South Pacific. and individuals from India and abroad. Therefore, in the context of the last eight years of domestic politics, seeing the current protests and backlash in isolation will be misplaced and shortsighted.

Historic agreement achieved in Lorne Melbourne, June 10: The Andrews Labor Government today celebrated the historic, nation leading agreement to establish the Treaty Authority, reaffirming the delivery of treaty, truth and justice in Victoria. Premier Daniel Andrews, the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gabrielle Williams and the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria gathered on Gadubanud Country of the Eastern Maar people in Lorne, where in ceremony, an agreement was signed. Treaty is about doing things differently and about proudly embracing Aboriginal lore, law and cultural authority. The exchange symbolises the agreement reached between the Victorian Government and the Assembly to establish the Treaty Authority, an independent umpire that will oversee Treaty negotiations. The Treaty Authority Bill was introduced into the Victorian Parliament on 7 June, giving the independent body the legal powers it needs to facilitate Treaty negotiations and resolve disputes between parties. The Treaty Authority will be a nation-leading institution without precedent, drawing on international best practice but adapted for Victoria to ensure Aboriginal lore, law and cultural authority are observed and upheld. Assembly Member Aunty Charmaine Clarke presented the Premier with a message stick, giving him permission to address the Assembly. The Premier spoke of how Treaty will change
the shape of Victoria’s cultural landscape, and how Victorians view and understand our identity, history, and future. Premier Daniel Andrews said: “As the Uluru Statement from the Heart tells us, the only way future generations can flourish is when Aboriginal people have power over their own destiny – Treaty will help us achieve this.” “I’m honoured today to be invited to address the First People’s Assembly of Victoria and celebrate with them the important step of establishing the independent Treaty Authority,” he added. Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gabrielle Williams said: “Treaty is about doing things differently. Today, we’re on Country signing the agreement for the Treaty Authority – another step towards achieving genuine selfdetermination for Aboriginal Victorians.” First Peoples Assembly Co-Chair Aunty Geraldine Atkinson said: “Ours is the oldest living culture on the planet. It’s clear that our lore and law has stood the test of time and I’m overjoyed and very proud to see it being embedded into the very core of the new institutions we’re creating to get Treaty done.” First Peoples Assembly Co-Chair Marcus Stewart said: “If we want Treaty to deliver, if we want it to improve the lives of our people, we have to think outside the colonial system and instead put Aboriginal culture at the heart of all we do. I’m pleased to say this agreement does that.”

Melbourne, June 8: A new mental health hub will give Aboriginal groups leadership to redesign how care is delivered to their communities across the state, as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s landmark reform agenda, transforming the way the mental health of Victorians is supported. Minister for Mental Health James Merlino today launched the new Balit Durn Durn Centre in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO). The Balit Durn Durn Centre will work in collaboration with health services and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to undertake research, provide workforce training and development, and share best practice in delivering culturally appropriate and tailored support. Mental healthcare is best driven from within communities that know their needs best – that’s
why the Labor Government is supporting Victorian Aboriginal communities to develop their own informed care pathways that are informed by their connection to language, lore and cultural knowledge. The Centre will support the establishment and expansion of a highly skilled and professionally qualified workforce to meet growing demand for more Aboriginal clinical and therapeutic workers - delivering at least 30 multidisciplinary scholarships through RMIT and Deakin Universities by 2025. 13 scholarships have already been awarded so far in 2022, showing strong interest in the program and a strong desire for Aboriginal Victorians to work in community providing culturally informed and sensitive care. The new centre delivers on a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System which called for community leaders, organisations, people, families and carers to have their voices and experiences included in a redesign of the mental health system. Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said the Andrews Labor Government programs will ensure.

Pakistan should focus on safety of its minorities: India comments from Pakistan. The absurdity of a serial violator of minority rights commenting on the treatment of minorities in another nation is not lost on anyone. The world has been witness to the systemic persecution of minorities including Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and Ahmadiyyas by Pakistan.
New Delhi, June 6 (IANS): India on June 6 strongly objected to Pakistan's comments and said that Islamabad should focus on the safety of its minorities. Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Arindam Bagchi said: "We have noted statements and
"The government of India accords the highest respect to all religions. This is quite unlike Pakistan where fanatics are eulogised and monuments are built in their honour. "We call on Pakistan to focus on the safety, security and wellbeing of its minority communities instead of engaging in alarmist propaganda and attempting to foment communal disharmony in India."
Earlier, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Arif Alvi strongly condemned the derogatory remarks made by two now-suspended BJP spokepersons against Prophet Muhammad. Taking to Twitter on June 5, Sharif said: "I condemn in strongest possible words hurtful comments of India's BJP leader about our beloved Prophet (PBUH). Have said it repeatedly India under Modi is trampling religious freedoms & persecuting Muslims. World should take note & severely reprimand India. "Our love for the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is supreme. All Muslims can sacrifice their life for the Love & Respect of their Holy Prophet (PBUH)."
European Parliamentarians reject crucial draft climate law that aim to deliver on the EU's in order to find a way forward on climate action ambitions.
Brussels, June 9 (IANS): Members of the European Parliament have sent back three draft laws forming part of the European Commission's "Fit For 55" climate legislation package, referring them back to Parliament's committee on environment (ENVI) for further consideration. The draft legislations were on the reform of the Emissions Trading System (ETS), the European Union's (EU) Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the Social Climate Fund, reports Xinhua news agency. Parliament was meant to adopt its position on legislative proposals
The measures are part of the "Fit for 55" package and seek to reduce the EU's greenhouse gas emissions and energy dependence, while supporting businesses and people in the transition to a sustainable economy. The EU is pursuing the most ambitious climate target: to cut emissions substantially by 2030 and bring them down to net zero by 2050. However, the European Parliament rejected the report on the revision of the ETS by 340 votes to 265, with 34 abstentions. Parliament's rules of procedure provide for the possibility, upon request by a political group or members, to refer a file back to committee for further consideration. MEPs voted in favour of postponing a decision on the two other reports so the ENVI committee will now discuss the matter in a forthcoming session
the files. Once a compromise has been found in the committee, the plenary session will vote again. The ETS obliges more than 10,000 power plants and factories to hold a permit for each tonne of CO2 they emit.
Intelligence agencies tracing origin of AQIS letter New Delhi, June 8 (IANS): Intelligence agencies are working to trace the origin of a letter reportedly written by the AlQaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), in which the terror outfit warned of carrying out 'suicide bombings' in the metro cities to avenge the 'insulting' remarks against Prophet Muhammad made by two now suspended BJP spokespersons. The agencies suspect that the terror outfit might provoke the youth to join its anti-India agenda on this pretext. This letter was circulated on social media on June 7. This is not the first time that the terror outfit has issued such threatening letter, but this time the security agencies are taking the matter more seriously. Sources said that all the inputs received by the various intelligence units are being collected to prepare a comprehensive report to avoid any terror strike. "The saffron terrorists should now await their end in Delhi, Bombay, UP and Gujarat. They should find refuge neither in their homes nor in their fortified
army cantonments," the AQIS letter read. It said the "hearts of Muslims all over the world are bleeding" and are filled with "feelings of revenge and retribution". "At the same time, we bring tidings of death and destruction to the rulers of India, of executions and hangings, of imprisonment and being bound with chains," read the letter. Several Muslim nations, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Indonesia and Iran, as well as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), have officially expressed their displeasure over the remarks against Prophet Muhammad. "The terror outfits are highly radicalised groups. They might be provoking the youth to join their anti-India campaign. The agencies are working on a number of inputs. Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal are just a pretext for them to radicalise the youth in the name of jehad," said a source.
Canada imposes new sanctions on Russian oil, gas, chemical industries The Minister said in a news release on June 8 that these new measures are imposing a ban on the export of 28 services vital for the operation of the oil, gas and chemical industries, including technical, management, accounting and advertising services, Xinhua news agency reported.
MEPs want to make the proposal more ambitious and also want municipal waste incineration to be included in the sector from 2026. They also want a more ambitious carbon levy on imported goods to stop companies from moving outside the EU to avoid emissions standards, a practice known as carbon leakage. The Social Climate Fund will address any social impacts that arise from a European Commission proposal to extend emissions trading to the building and road transport sectors.

Terrorism deaths down globally, but up in Africa: UN chief told a meeting of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact on June 8.
United Nations, June 9 (IANS): The number of deaths from terrorist attacks is down globally but increasing in Africa, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. "Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 48 per cent of deaths attributed to terrorist groups globally last year," he

Terrorist groups like al-Qaida, the Islamic State and their affiliates are continuing to grow in the Sahel and making inroads into central and southern Africa, he added. Terrorist groups exploit power vacuums, longstanding inter-ethnic strife, internal weaknesses and state fragilities, Guterres said. In conflict-affected countries like Congo, Libya and Somalia, terrorism intensified cycles of violence, fueling further instability, undermining peace efforts, and setting back development goals, Xinhua news agency reported. However, he added that such groups also seek to exploit and manipulate
grievances in society and mistrust governments in largely peaceful countries such as Mozambique and Tanzania. The UN chief is optimistic following a visit to Borno State, Nigeria, once a Boko Haram stronghold, now on the road to reconciliation and reintegration. "I met people eager to restart their lives, including children who were once associated with Boko Haram, and women who are committed to ending the cycles of violence and discrimination under which they have suffered for so long," he said. "The United Nations family is standing with them and we will continue our support as they rebuild their lives, and work to renew the social contract

between people, communities and government." Guterres said the Nigerian government's strategy is to re-establish trust with the people, creating conditions to dismantle Boko Haram's recruitment mechanism. He added that many former Boko Haram fighters are even reintegrating into society. The people themselves undermined the work and terrorist actions of Boko Haram, he added. But he warned that terrorism cannot be effectively addressed without tackling the conditions conducive to its spread. Weak institutions, inequalities, poverty, hunger and injustice all provide fertile ground for terrorist recruitment and violent extremism. The
Secretary-General said an integrated and holistic approach is essential to the United Nations' counter-terrorism strategy. He called for investing in health, education, protection, gender equality and justice systems accessible to all and creating truly democratic systems and processes so that every person can have a voice in the future of their communities and countries. "Upholding human rights is critical to tackling some of the world's most complex problems, and must be at the center of our counter-terror efforts," Guterres said. "This is our duty, our legal obligation, and our strategic imperative."

‘Unfounded assumptions’: India rejects Yale environment index rating New Delhi, June 8 (IANS): Rejecting the bottom rank in environmental performance index by the Yale Centre for Environmental Law & Policy, India on June 8 said that many indicators used for assessing the EPI are based on "unfounded assumptions" with some of them "extrapolated and based on surmises and unscientific methods". Rejecting the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2022 released recently by the American University that had put India at the bottom most 180th rank, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) announced that it does not accept Yale's analysis and gave a longish explanation for the same.
rate of change in emission of the last 10 years instead of modeling that takes into account a longer time period, extent of renewable energy capacity and use, additional carbon sinks, energy efficiency etc. of respective countries," the Ministry statement said, adding: "Both forests and wetlands of the country are crucial carbon sinks, which have not been factored in while computing the projected GHG emissions trajectory up to 2050 given by EPI 2022." India has already achieved the target of 40 percent of installed electricity capacity from nonfossil fuel based sources.
As per Yale Centre for Environmental Law & Policy website, EPI 2022 provides a data-driven summary of the state of sustainability for 180 countries using 40 performance indicators across 11 issues.
India also said that the historical data on the lowest emission trajectory has been ignored in the computation and said: "The weight of indicators in which the country was performing well has been reduced and reasons for change in assignment of weights has not been explained in the report."

New Delhi, June 8 (IANS): In view of the heavy pollution faced by residents of Delhi-NCR every year with coal having a major share in the rising emission levels, the government has declared to ban the use of coal as fuel by the industries from October 1 and directed the industries to shift to PNG or biomass-based fuel.
governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi that "these units would need to switch over to PNG or biomass fuel by September 30 in areas where PNG infrastructure and supply is available and by December 31 for those areas where PNG infrastructure and supply is not available", the directive said.
Industries that are likely to face issues related to availability of infrastructure and supply of piped natural gas (PNG) have been given an exemption till December 31 and the coal ban for them will be applicable from January 1, 2023. "Failing it, the industries shall be closed down and not permitted to schedule their operations," read the Commission for Air Quality Management in Delhi NCR and Surrounding Areas (CAQM) directive.
Meanwhile, the Commission said it had received submissions/ representations from certain industries that furnaces/kilns involved in metal melting/ smelting/heating/refining processes need desired temperature/specific heat and calorific value which would not be achieved through use of biomass fuel.
However, even with the use of biomass fuel, these units shall need to adhere to the stipulated emission standards, read the directive dated June 2. Unlike earlier years, the phenomenon of air pollution is not restricted to mere winters. The latest data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed that the number of ‘poor' air quality days was the highest since 2018 between January 1 and May 31 this year. An air quality index (AQI) between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor'. AQI over 401 is considered 'severe'. Delhi is currently experiencing ‘poor' and ‘very poor' AQI while in some stations, it is ‘severe'. With respect to the industries, the Commission has already told the
Also, industries with standalone cupola-based foundries, which mandatorily require a carbon feedstock, in addition to the fuel, had made a representation for permitting use of metallurgical coke, both as fuel and feedstock in cupola-based furnaces. After examining the technical, technological and process requirements for these two categories of industries and considering the need to "optimally balance the imperatives of sustainability of industries as also the emissions from such industrial operations that have a direct bearing on the air quality, the Commission approved the proposal to permit both such fuels but for "industrial application only in regions beyond the jurisdiction of GNCTD". The Commission also specified the permissible levels of emissions for particulate matter (PM), SO2, NOx and CO2.
Former govt responsible for Aus gas crisis: Minister Canberra, June 5 (IANS): Australia's Energy Minister Chris Bowen on June 5 blamed the former government for the country's gas crisis. Bowen said nine years of "denial" under the previous government "has ill-prepared our country for this crisis", reports Xinhua news agency. Australians are facing soaring gas and electricity prices as a result of increased winter demand, gas shortages and unscheduled outages at coal-fired power stations. The former coalition government in 2017 legislated a "gas trigger" that allowed liquefied natural gas (LNG) destined for export to be requisitioned and deployed in the domestic market. "The way they design the
trigger, as I said, it's about as blunt as a basketball in terms of effectiveness in the short term. It is not the answer to this short-term crisis," he told Sky News Australia. Peter Dutton, the new leader of the opposition, said Bowen's response to the crisis was demonstrating Labor's inexperience in government. "They don't know which way to jump at the moment. And you know, it'll take them a while to find their feet," he said.

MAKE IN INDIA
Make in India: Investment opportunities As world economies restart their engines in a bid to regain lost ground due to the Covid-19 pandemic, India too shows signs of economic buoyancy and promise. India’s Make in India initiative holds a key to the global economic revival, something that should interest Australian government ministries, corporate sector, entrepreneurs, institutions seeking R&D collaborations and Australia Inc in general, among others. India assumes greater importance as several major world economies including American, Japanese, German, British and South Korean look to move out and diversify their businesses from China. India has jumped to 63rd rank in the World Bank’s Ease of Development 2020 report, and has also been ranked as the 9th largest recipient of Foreign Direct Investment destination in 2019 by the World Investment Report 2020 of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
India’s journey towards becoming a major domestic EV hub By Ishita Sirsikar and Srijata Deb Strategic Investment Research Unit (SIRU)
The country’s determination to achieve a smooth transition to a green and cleaner economy has witnessed significant fervour. Significant emphasis has been laid on the transition to a carbon neutral economy and the emergence of Electrical Vehicular (EV) systems. This is the foundational step in going beyond the ‘end of pipe’ solutions to control carbon emissions and initiating efforts to prevent vehicular pollution in the country. The upcoming projects and investments in this regard are envisaged to produce significant results in the country, in addition to encouraging good practices to reduce polluting effluents. This pivot to clean mobility has become the need of the hour, considering the focus on climate change and building sustainable development goals. In the recently released World Air Quality Report 2021, 35 out of 50 cities with the worst air quality were from India. In this context, the need for heavy reliance on carbon-neutral public transport by the residents, the promotion of electrical vehicles for personal and/or commercial purposes and the need to adopt other relevant cleaner mobility practices remain at the forefront of several policy discourses. Thus, in particular for the electrical vehicular systems, the coming few years remain pivotal as the Centre targets to achieve at least 30 per cent of the on-road vehicles to be electric by 2030. Several schemes have been put in place to incentivise companies to build EVs and batteries locally, in order to boost supply and complement a myriad of benefits for EV buyers. The country has been doubling down on its EV ambitions, focusing on cultivating demand for EVs at the domestic forefront while also developing its own locally-produced EV manufacturing industry which could cater to this demand at home and of the neighbours. For instance, initially envisioned for three years, FAME-II got a twoyear extension in June 2021 owing to a number of factors including the pandemic. It aims to support 10 lakh e-two-wheelers, 5 lakh e-three-wheelers, 55,000 e-fourwheeler passenger cars and 7,000 e-buses. As a part of this, the government has made a push for indigenous manufacturing with a number of automakers answering
www.indianews.com.au
the call. While e-two-wheelers and e-four-wheelers receive significant coverage, the threewheeled EV is an emerging key player in the market. Three-wheeler EVs, such as e-autos and e-rickshaws, currently account for over 65 per cent of all EVs registered in India and cater to the huge demands of public transportation in the country. Two-wheeler EVs, on the other hand, are a distant second, accounting for over 30 percent of registrations, while passenger four-wheeler EVs account for only 2.5 per cent, as highlighted by NITI Aayog. Furthermore, the EV registrations data for various states highlight that Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal account for close to 80 percent of all e-three-wheeler registrations, with U.P. accounting for close to 40 percent of all registrations. Of these five states, Assam, Delhi, U.P., and West Bengal have formalised EV policies while Bihar has a draft policy with a final policy due to be introduced later in 2022. E-three-wheelers, such as e-rickshaws, are now a familiar sight in these States, having been created and manufactured locally. These cars, which cost between 1 lakh and 1.5 lakh and are made by a slew of local workshops and small businesses, have dominated the e-three-wheeler industry. Local manufacturers have created a truly Indian EV with its unique design suited to Indian commuter needs, thanks to financial aid from FAME-II. Legacy automakers have been struggling to compete with these local producers with their own e-three-wheeler solutions. These states’ EV regulations, implemented as part of FAME-II, have played a key role in encouraging this growth. The goal of these five states’ EV regulations is to increase consumer acceptance of EVs while also boosting local manufacturing. All five states offer a complete exemption from road taxes and registration fees. In some circumstances, Assam, Delhi, and West Bengal have tied incentives to battery size (in kWh), with extra benefits such as lower lending rates and scrappage incentives. The state of Uttar Pradesh has taken a different approach to subsidies, providing 100 percent interestfree loans to state government
employees for the purchase of electric vehicles in the state, as well as a 30 percent subsidy on the road price of electric vehicles to families with a single girl child. To encourage the sale of electric vehicles manufactured in the state, the state of Uttar Pradesh exempts all such vehicles from SGST. It has established incentives to encourage the manufacture of electric vehicles in the state. Bihar’s draught electric vehicle policy follows a similar pattern, focusing on uptake and manufacture. These states have done very well in the FAME-II initiative and are on track to meet the 5-lakh e-threewheeler target. India’s success in the e-threewheeler industry is due to the development of both the demand and supply sides. Subsidies, tax breaks, and zero-interest loans have all helped to boost demand for these vehicles. These vehicles provide a lowcost mode of transportation for millions of people, are simple to maintain, and have low operating expenses, making them extremely popular among operators. In comparison to its two-wheeler and four-wheeler counterparts, the indigenous design enables for easy local manufacturing in workshops and small businesses, as well as making them comparatively straightforward to charge and maintain. This success in the e-three-wheeler market has been difficult to reproduce in the e-two-wheeler and e-four-wheeler markets, which face demand and supply issues. Evidently, two-wheelers and four-wheelers are primarily associated with personal use, customers are understandably hesitant to accept such vehicles due to the challenges accompanying the models. The recent occurrences of e-scooter fires have further contributed to the fear. In India, finding dependable manufacturers with proven track records in the twowheeler and four-wheeler EV space is difficult. This exacerbates the supply shortage, and there are few economical options available to consumers. As a result, future practice must include suitable design and passenger safety criteria. For effective implementation, future EV policies must take into account existing and growing stakeholders on both the demand and supply sides. Source: Invest India, Government of India

RBI says 75% of rise in inflation projection for FY23 due to food 2022-23 does not take into account the impact of monetary policy actions taken today," Das said in his remarks earlier this morning while spelling out the outcome of the ongoing monetary policy review meeting that started on Monday. For FY23, the RBI sees overall inflation at 6.7 per cent, with 7.5 per cent in Q1, 7.4 per cent in Q2, 6.2 per cent in Q3, and 5.8 per cent in Q4, taking into consideration the normal monsoon and average crude oil basket price of $105 per barrel. New Delhi, June 8 (IANS): Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das, while estimating India's overall retail inflation for FY23 at 6.7 per cent, said that the 75 per cent of the increase in inflation projections can be attributed to the food group. China, whose growth forecast for the current calendar year was cut by 0.8 per cent from the January forecast to 4.3 per cent, will be the second-fastest growing major economy. United Nations, June 7 (IANS): Against the backdrop of a global economic deceleration from the fallout of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the World Bank has cut India's growth prospects to 7.5 per cent for the current fiscal year -- but the nation will still retain its position as the world's fastestgrowing economy.
The RBI on Wednesday raised the repo rate by 50 basis points to 4.9 per cent to tame rising inflation, which has been now above RBI's 6 per cent tolerance level for four months in a row. Coming to growth, India's real GDP growth in FY23 is seen at 7.2 per cent, will 16.2 per cent in Q1, 6.2 per cent in Q2, 4.1 in Q3, and 4.0 in Q4, with risks broadly balanced, Das said in his post policy statement.
The Bank's Global Prospects Report reduced India's growth by 0.5 per cent from the 8 per cent forecast made in April when the impact of the Ukraine conflict was just beginning to be felt, and 1.2 per cent from the 8.7 per cent forecast in January. It estimated India's growth in the last fiscal year at 8.7 per cent. For the global economy as a whole, the report cut the growth rate by 1.2 per cent -- from the 4.1 per cent forecast in January to 2.9 per cent. World Bank President David Malpass issued a stern warning that the world faces the risk of stagflation -- a situation of economic stagnation accompanied by high inflation. "Even if a global recession is averted, the pain of stagflation could persist for several years -unless major supply increases are set in motion," he said.

The Bank attributed the growth forecast cut for India to "headwinds from rising inflation, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical tensions offsetting buoyancy in the recovery of services consumption from the pandemic". "Rising inflationary pressures led to an unscheduled policy interest rate hike in May," it added. On the other hand, it said, "Growth will also be supported by both private and public fixed investment, buoyed by government incentives and reforms to improve the business climate." The Bank forecast India's growth rate in the next fiscal year to moderate to 7.1 per cent, although it will be 0.3 per cent higher than the projection in January.
The US and the Euro area had their growth forecast cut to 2.5 per cent, a reduction of 1.2 per cent for the US from January and 1.7 per cent for the Eurozone. Giving the global picture, the World Bank said, "Following more than two years of (Covid) pandemic, spillovers from Russia's invasion of Ukraine are set to sharply hasten the deceleration of global economic activity. "The war in Ukraine is leading to high commodity prices, adding to supply disruptions, increasing food insecurity and poverty, exacerbating inflation, contributing to tighter financial conditions, magnifying financial vulnerability, and heightening policy uncertainty," it said. In South Asia as a whole, the report said, "The Russian Federation's invasion of Ukraine has weighed on growth in the South Asia region (SAR) after a solid recovery in the second half of last year and amplified preexisting vulnerabilities." It said that "while the direct impacts from trade and financial exposure to Russia and Ukraine are minimal, spillovers from rising commodity prices, higher borrowing costs, and weaker external demand are significant" It warned that "additional increases in commodity prices, particularly wheat, could put further upward pressure on food prices eroding real incomes and reducing consumption" while rising energy prices "could further increase inflation, worsen current account positions, and divert resources away from productivity-enhancing investment and social protection". Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's economy is forecast to shrink by 7.8 per cent during the current calendar year, while Maldives is expected to grow by 7.6 per cent. Bangladesh's economy is forecast to grow this fiscal year by 6.7 per cent, Pakistan by 4 per cent, Nepal by 4.1 per cent and Bhutan by 4.7 per cent.

which has again risen to $120 per barrel, we project current account deficit (CAD) to widen to more than $90 billion (in FY23) from an estimated $47 billion in FY22," the report said. India's merchandise trade deficit widened to a record high level of $23.3 billion in May 2022 from a deficit of $20.1 billion in April, the report said citing the Ministry of Commerce and

Aussie hospitalisations rebound amid easing Covid restrictions Canberra, June 1 (IANS): The number of people who were hospitalised in Australia rebounded in 2020-21 amid easing Covid-19 restrictions, data has revealed.
Of those, 7.4 million were discharged on the same day they were admitted and 4.4 million spent at least one night in hospital - increases of 8.1 and 3.3 per cent, respectively. AIHW spokesperson Adrian Webster said the increase could largely be attributed to coronavirus restrictions easing across most of Australia in the second half of 2020 and early 2021.
“The significant increase in hospitalizations at the national level can be largely attributed to the easing of restrictions following the first waves of the pandemic in most states and territories, particularly restrictions on elective surgery,” he said in a statement. “The increase also reflects efforts to clear the backlog of surgeries that had been created the previous year.” In the state of Victoria, where a strict Covid lockdown was instituted in 2020 between July and October, hospitalisations

one month prior to the study. Both groups were matched on key demographic characteristics.
A total of 5,233 fresh cases were recorded in a span of 24 hours as against 3,714 reported on the previous day, the Union Health Ministry said on June 8 morning. In the same period, the country has reported 7 Covid deaths, taking the nationwide death toll to 5,24,715. Meanwhile, the active caseload of the country has also risen to 28,857 cases, accounting for 0.07 per cent of the country’s total positive cases. The recovery of 3,345 patients in a span of 24 hours took the cumulative tally to 4,26,36,710. Consequently, India’s recovery rate stands at 98.72 per cent. Meanwhile, India’s daily positivity rate has gone up to 1.67 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate

Shattering to think Andrew Symonds is Mithali Raj bids adieu to her record breaking international not with us anymore: Shane Watson after the deaths of leg-spin legend Shane Warne and wicketkeeper Rod Marsh in a span of less than 24 hours in March. Watson felt the cricketing community will have to be around Symonds' family, especially his kids Chloe and Billy.
career
"His poor two kids, such beautiful kids and they adored their dad as well. We need to make sure we rally around his family as much as we can, as I know he would do that for us."
Brisbane, June 2 (IANS): Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson paid a glowing tribute to Andrew Symonds, declaring the late all-rounder the greatest teammate he ever had. Symonds left the cricketing world in mourning after dying at the age of 46 in a car crash in Townsville, Queensland on May 14. "You felt bulletproof when you played in the same team as Andrew Symonds. Having him at the point and just knowing he always had your back no matter what. And to bat with him was something very special. It is shattering to think he is not with us anymore." "I look back at old footage I have seen over the last couple of weeks and (shaking head) he was so good, just so incredibly good. And to go with it one of the best
teammates you could ever have," said Watson to former England pacer Isa Guha on ICC Review Show. Watson further claimed that there weren't many players born with the same ability as Symonds and even compared him to West Indies batting great Sir Vivian Richards. "He was very much Viv Richards reincarnated in the way he played. Even before I played against him you always heard about this big, powerful, six-hitting batter who could do everything and who was an amazing athlete." "His ability to bowl spin and medium pace, he was one of the best fielders to ever play. His allround ability was something we haven't seen much of and won't see much of again." Symonds' untimely demise comes
Isa agreed with the same. "Just thinking of his friends and his family and his beautiful kids as well, I am sure everyone will be there to support. Not just the Australian cricketing community, but also the wider community around the world." She also paid a tribute to Symonds, recalling the time spent working with the all-rounder as a commentator recently during the cricketing summer in Australia. "We have lost two unbelievable people from cricket, alongside Rod Marsh not long before that, and I still can't quite believe what is going on, it doesn't feel real." "He (Symonds) was actually a shoulder to cry on in the aftermath of the Shane Warne (news) as we were working together in broadcast and we were just trying to keep each others' spirits up. It just doesn't feel real and is hard to comprehend really what has happened."
CA unveils all-new coaching staff after Mott, Sawyer’s departure
Melbourne, June 6 (IANS): Cricket Australia (CA) on June 6 named Jude Coleman and Dan Marsh as assistant coaches of the all-conquering women's team after the positions fell vacant following the departure of head coach Matthew Mott and his team. Mott -- a long-serving Australia women's head coach under whom the team won a record-extending seventh 50-over World Cup in New Zealand recently -- moved to England after being appointed their men's white-ball coach, while his assistant, Ben Sawyer, has been appointed New Zealand women's team head coach. Mott's second assistant, Shelley Nitschke, has stepped into the interim head coach's role of the Australian women's team. Jude Coleman is a multiple Indoor Cricket World Cup-winning

captain, while Dan Marsh led Tasmania to their first Sheffield Shield triumph in 2006-07, according to cricket.com.au. Australia have a busy schedule ahead of them with the Meg Lanning-led side keen to clinch an historic Birmingham Commonwealth Games gold medal in July-August to add to the ICC 50-over World Cup trophy this year. Australia will also play a T20 tri-series involving Ireland and Pakistan. Both Jude Coleman and Dan Marsh "are familiar with the national set up with the former having led the Australia A women's side to a 5-0 clean sweep against England A earlier this year, while the latter supported her during that series," according to the report. Coleman is currently assistant
coach of the South Australia Scorpions and Adelaide Strikers WBBL side, while Marsh, who played 150 first-class matches for South Australia, Tasmania and Leicestershire, scoring 8146 runs and collecting 174 wickets with his left-arm spin, is the current assistant coach of the Tasmanian Tigers women's team," according to the report. The duo will assist Nitschke in Brisbane in June when Australia organise their final camp ahead of the tour of the UK and Ireland. "It's great to have coaches of such high calibre in the Australian system who we can call upon like we have with Jude and Dan," said Ben Oliver, EGM of High Performance and National Teams. "Both have extensive coaching and playing experience and did a brilliant job with the Australia A team earlier this year, so we know they'll be of great assistance to Shelley, Meg and the team over the coming months. "We're excited for Ben and this new opportunity; he's been a key part of the success of our world champion women's team over a number of years and is ready for the challenge of leading an international programme."

New Delhi, June 8 (IANS): Legendary India batter Mithali Raj on June 8 called time on her storied international career, bringing an end to a glorious 23-year career. Having made her debut as a 16-year-old in 1999, Mithali's career has spanned nearly 23 years across four different decades during which time she became the central cog in the growth of the women's game in the country and beyond. Mithali finished her international career with a staggering 10,868 runs - the most in women's cricket. She scored 7805 ODI runs in 232 matches, at an average just over 50 while has 2364 runs in 89 T20Is, as well as 699 runs in 12 Tests, including a century and four half-centuries. The 39-yearold Mithali, who captained India to the final of the ICC Women's World Cup 2017, also holds the record for the most matches (28 matches) captained in Women's World Cups, breaking Australian legend Belinda Clark's record
during the ICC Women's World Cup 2022 in March. She also led India to four consecutive Asia Cup triumphs -- 2005-06, 2006-07, 2008, 2012. However, perhaps Mithali's most significant achievement as captain came in 2014 as India sealed a historic Test series victory in England, with Mithali guiding the team home with an unbeaten 50 in the second innings. As a skipper, Mithali has 89 wins out of 155 - the most by any player in women's ODIs. Her 155 matches as captain is also the highest in women's ODIs. The batter also became the second youngest centurion after she scored a century on ODI debut in 1999. At 16 years and 205 days, she became the youngest centurion in women's internationals. The record was only broken 22 years later in 2021, when Ireland's Amy Hunter achieved that feat on her 16th birthday. The veteran has also most runs in a series by a captain. In the 2014-17 ICC Women's Championship, Mithali scored 535 runs in 17 matches, the most by an India captain in an ODI series. The 39-year-old Mithali also played most matches (232) and hit most fifties (64) in women's internationals ODIs. Mithali is also the only Indian woman to score a double century in Tests. Her score of 214 (v England in 2002) is the second-highest individual score in women's Tests.
Former teammates speak at memorial service for Andrew Symonds
Family and close friends gathered in Townsville prior to the memorial for a private service on May 27 morning that comes with a dress code of definitely no jacket and tie required, before the public memorial later that afternoon at Riverway Stadium, an ICC report said.
Townsville (Queensland), May 27 (IANS) :A host of former teammates and Australian Test stars here on Friday spoke at a public memorial service for allrounder Andrew Symonds, who died in a car crash earlier in May. Symonds died at the age of 46 on May 14 when his car left the road and rolled in Hervey Range just outside of Townsville in the Australian state of Queensland. Test wicket-keepers Ian Healy and Adam Gilchrist, former Australia coach Darren Lehmann, ex-Queensland captain Jimmy Maher and long-time friend Matthew Mott were among the confirmed speakers, with the memorial set being streamed live at the Queensland Cricketers' Club at Symonds' former home ground the Gabba in Brisbane.
Details of the memorial come after a period of mourning for many of Symonds' former teammates, with tributes for the Queenslander coming in thick and fast following his shock death. While Symonds only played 26 Tests for Australia, he was more well-known for his exploits with the white-ball as he represented his country in 198 ODIs and 14 T20Is.The cricketer played a major part in successful World Cup campaigns in 2003 and 2007, with his hard-hitting in the lower-order and prowess in the field a clear standout in what was a dominant period for Australia. He also picked up 133 ODI wickets bowling a combination of medium pace and off-spin that was vastly underrated.

Save Soil movement celebrates World Environment Day 2022 in Melbourne Earth Buddies of the Save Soil movement celebrated World Environment Day on Sunday, June 5 with a Save Soil at Federation Square event. The fun-filled event was organised by enthusiastic Earth Buddies to raise awareness of the need to Save Soil to Save the Environment. The event included a children’s story telling activity, singing and dancing. For the special children’s story telling activity, our little Earth Buddies dressed up as creatures (Dung Beetle, Worm, Nematode, Ant) that live in the soil and enacted the story of why the creatures wanted to Save Soil. The energy and enthusiasm of the Earth Buddies, and the colourful dress up costumes generated a buzz from passerby - despite a cold Melbourne day. The Earth Buddies joyfully and enthusiastically shared the important message of the need to Save Soil at the fun event. Most of us take the food that we eat for granted. However, the food

of today is 90% less nutritious as compared to that of the early 20th century. Research conducted by the United Nations predicts that by the years 2040-2045, there will be 40% less food available for our growing population, which will reach 9.4 billion people by that time. That is happening because our soil is degrading rapidly. 27,000 species of soil microorganisms are becoming extinct per year. In addition, we have 80 – 100 harvests left and that is just another 45-60 years of farming globally. Therefore, we are facing soil extinction and the fallout from that will include ongoing famines, relentless civil wars and mass forced migrations. The solution is to regenerate our soil and to ensure that there is at least 3-6% organic content in the soil so that we can grow nutritious food. At present, there is less than 1% organic content in over 60% of the farming lands globally. If we start working on solutions to regenerate soil now, it will
take 25-30 years to see results. But if we don’t act for the next 25-30 years, it will take 150 - 200 years to restore soil health and fertility. The only way to prevent soil extinction is to ensure that soil regeneration is enshrined in government policy globally, in each country. As citizens, we have to speak with one voice and let our governments know that soil health is important to us. To initiate citizen movement, Sadhguru, the founder of the Save Soil movement, at the age of 65, has given voice to the plight of soil, by undertaking an arduous 30,000 km, 100 day, solo motorbike ride across Europe, Middle East and culminating in Southern India in late June 2022. On his journey, Sadhguru has been meeting citizens, influencers, scientists, prime ministers of nations and ministers for the environment to raise awareness and to garner support. This movement is not a protest or agitation. It aims

Art Basel Hong Kong 2022

This year’s show will offer dynamic public programs that highlight local artists
he 2022 edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong, and second edition of its hybrid fair, welcomes 130 leading galleries from 28 countries and territories. Alongside robust presentations across Galleries, Insights, and Discoveries, this year’s show will offer dynamic public programs that highlight local artists and create meaningful connections in the city and across the globe. Hong Kong-based moving image pioneer Ellen Pau’s new, sitespecific moving image work ‘The Shape of Light,’ co-commissioned by Art Basel and M+, supported by the Lead Partner UBS, as well as a special tram project with artists Cherie Cheuk Ka-wai, Stephen Wong Chun-hei, and Shum Kwan-yi, commissioned by Art Basel and co-presented by the Hong Kong Tourism Board will be featured. Art Basel Live, Art Basel’s multichannel digital program will once again amplify the show’s content to global audiences. Co-commissioned by Art Basel and M+ in celebration of Hong Kong and its thriving art scene, Pau’s ‘The Shape of Light’ explores the possibilities of the immaterial and the material, transforming light into digital objects. Featuring a popular sutra in Mahayana Buddhism, ‘The Heart Sutra,’ expressed here through sign language, the ritualistic video meditates on the concept ‘form is emptiness, emptiness is form’. Natural phenomena like fire, water, and light are rendered in aweinspiring computer-generated animation. The work will be presented on the M+ Facade from May 20 to June 19, 7pm to 9pm daily. There will be a live performance by Ellen Pau on May 27, as well as a talk and screening on May 28. A four-day online screening from May 29 to June 1 will allow local and international audiences to view a collection of Pau’s pioneering videos and installations made between 1988 and 2015. Commissioned by Art Basel and co-presented by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the Artist Tram Project will invite local artists Cherie Cheuk Ka-wai, Stephen Wong Chun-hei, and Shum Kwanyi to project their works on the exteriors of Hong Kong trams, the vehicles in one of the city’s most iconic transport systems. Like moving canvasses meandering along the island, the three trams capture the artists’ vivid
imaginations and experiences of the city’s landscapes and everyday scenes, engaging with the public and the artists’ own memories of Hong Kong In conjunction with the show at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), Art Basel Live will return, featuring Online Viewing Rooms (OVRs), livestreamed videos, virtual tours, and multilingual VIP and public walkthroughs. A dynamic online conversation series premiered in February 2022 as part of Art Basel Live with an artist talk by Apichatpong Weerasethakul and will run through May 20. The series will include a panel, surveying the development of the Asia Pacific Triennale, and a talk on how galleries in Asia are redefining the art marketplace. Violence is symptomatic of the alienation of Punjab’s youth IANS
in fact has no money and falls deeper into debt with every passing year. [A] report by Common Cause points towards an ingrained distrust of the police and by extension, the government. Some people may be able to identify a year or a period when this distrust took root; for others, it is just a 'given' that they grew up with. Militancy itself was a symptom of a long-standing sense of alienation. The state's response drove that alienation deeper. Ruthless measures employed to crush it perverted the administrative culture, particularly police culture. The courts were paralysed for 20 years. Industry was always denied to Punjab on the pretext that the state was vulnerable to attack, and, in recent years, tax-holiday packages granted to neighbouring states have drained away industry and jobs. Traditionally, Punjab has been an agricultural state; but, if any hope remained in agriculture, then farmers and farm labourers would not be committing suicide.

Successive state governments have come in on big talk but, either because of indifference or inability, all the indicators show the state on a downward path. Parties woo the voters with solemn oaths to provide corruption-free and efficient
governance; they promise to rescue agriculture and revive the villages; they commit to attracting industry and creating jobs. If the claims are to be believed, would lakhs of young people and their parents make such a heroic effort to get out of Punjab, get out of India? It must also be pointed out that the politicians of Punjab send their own children abroad, which strongly suggests that they do not believe what they say either. 'It Can't be Worse There' The motivations of those desperate to leave Punjab are largely economic, but not only economic. Another thing that drives them to risk everything to get out of Punjab is the belief that there is absolutely nothing that they can do to change a corrupt administration, a rapacious police force, and a selfish, static, unresponsive political culture. A story in 'The Indian Express' of March 3, 2018, quotes a youngster from a village in Gurdaspur district:
events of the 1980s and 1990s will be gone. Some of that generation were sufficiently alienated from the government to get into a war with it. They were not alienated from home and faith, so fighting still seemed worthwhile. Very few of their children and grandchildren have much awareness of, or interest in, the traumas suffered by the preceding generation. They see so little hope in their homeland that fighting does not seem worthwhile; they simply leave. If militancy was a symptom of alienation, then the present generation is even more alienated than their elders were. Legacies do not always have to be recognised or articulated to endure. (Excerpted with permission from SAGE Publications India from the book The Legacy of Militancy in Punjab: Long Road to 'Normalcy' by Inderjit Singh Jaijee and Dona Suri)

Hers is not the problem of Indian women or of mothers, and certainly not of 'women'. Top Destinations for Sustainable Stays in 2022
C
elebrated by millions of people across the globe, World Environment Day aims to create awareness and encourage action for the protection of the environment. And while one can practise sustainability in multiple aspects of one’s life, travelling sustainability can be a traveller's priority, especially with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and resumption of travel. This World Environment Day, Booking.com has compiled a list of destinations across the globe with the highest percentages of Travel Sustainable properties on their platform. Travel Sustainable badge recognizes the impactful efforts properties worldwide are making to help protect the planet and contribute positively to their local communities. From trendsetting cities to stunning natural parks and destinations making a concerted effort to manage their travel volumes more consciously, there is plenty of inspiration for the 94% of Indian travellers who say that sustainable travel is important to them – no matter where your sense of adventure and exploration might take you. Hoedspruit, South Africa Nestled beneath the majestic Northern Drakensberg Mountains, the scenic town of Hoedspruit is surrounded by the largest privately-owned conservation area in the world. The town is located in the heart of the UNESCO registered Kruger to Canyons Biosphere where the local community takes part in several recycling and conservation initiatives and showcases local produce at the Lekker Farmer’s market to support the surrounding area. Known as one of the best places for a safari in South Africa, visitors can immerse themselves in the beautiful surroundings by respectfully observing the incredible wildlife in their natural habitat. To witness the admirable work the town does with regard to protecting animals, visitors can spend time at – and make a contribution to – the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. celebrated as an international role model for climate action, having taken multiple measures to ensure a net positive impact. The Swedish capital uses renewable energy sources and recycles 99% of the city’s solid waste. It also has one of the cleanest – and tastiest – tap waters in the world, so there’s no need to buy bottled water. Since the city is relatively compact, there are options to explore it more sustainably, with a great public transport system and many sights within walking distance. The city offers a community bicycle program that allows people to rent one of 1,000+ bicycles that are scattered throughout Stockholm. Visitors can also explore the city from the water: an evening city kayaking tour offers the unique experience of paddling through Stockholm’s waterways to admire the architecture and landmarks, ending with a traditional Swedish meal. Arusha, Tanzania Known as Tanzania’s safari capital and a wonderful stopover for keen hikers heading to scale Mount Kilimanjaro, Arusha is exactly halfway between Cairo and Cape Town. With the breathtaking dormant volcano of Mount Meru as a backdrop, Arusha is easily explored by foot and is known for its environmental efforts such as tree planting initiatives, sustainable agricultural volunteering programs, and a water sanitation project which visitors to the area can support. The East African city is also known for its monumental clock tower and various cultural tourism programs on offer, including a tour of the Olpopongi Maasai Cultural Village and Museum where visitors can experience the local Maasai culture firsthand. This is an ideal way to learn more about and connect with the local community – perfect for the 69 percent of Indian travellers who say they want to have authentic experiences that are representative of the local culture when they travel.

After refocusing their efforts and allowing the island’s ecosystems to start to recover, Boracay is now responsibly welcoming visitors again, managing volumes with a daily tourist limit. The island has also implemented an array of sustainable eco-tourism practices, including the adoption of electric tricycles, and now relies on solar power as its main energy source, seeking to ensure a long and healthy future.
Puerto Iguazú, Argentina
Located northeast of Colombia’s capital Bogotá, the charming town of Villa de Leyva is known for its rich history and traditional whitewashed architecture. In the heart of the town lies the stunning Plaza Mayor, home to the city hall, museums, hotels and shopping passages for visitors to explore and support the work of local artisans. Visitors should consider timing their trip to coincide with the annual tree festival, the Festival del Árbol, which is held in October to celebrate the natural wonders the town has to offer. A celebration of the region’s indigenous plants, the festivities include everything from lectures on conservation and sustainable tourism to performances from local musicians.
Located where Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina meet, Puerto Iguazú is home to the magnificent Iguazú National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and voted one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. With 275 waterfalls, the most renowned and arguably most stunning is the semicircular Devil's Throat, more than 269 feet (82m) high and located at the very heart of the national park. For those wanting to explore with minimal impact, the luscious landscape is accessible by foot via the many hiking trails, or reachable by the Ecological Train that crosses the jungle. Visitors can observe the wildlife in the surrounding tropical forest; with over a thousand different species of animals and plants, it’s part of a larger ecosystem that runs through most of Latin America. To help preserve biodiversity and protect the park, as well as the local community, the hospitality sector has kickstarted several initiatives including litter and street cleaning to ensure the numbers of tourists do not adversely affect the area and the people who live there. Boracay, Philippines An idyllic tropical island destination, Boracay is the stuff Instagram dreams are made of. Featuring no fewer than 17 stunning beaches and coves, including the stunning 2.5 miles (4km) long White Beach, visitors have stretches of pristine sand and sea to surf, kiteboard, and snorkel, or to simply relax and soak up the sunshine. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Known for its live music scene, acclaimed museums and galleries, the iconic CN Tower and an incredible skyline, Ontario’s capital and Canada’s largest city is also a fantastic destination for those with an eye on traveling more responsibly. Mesmerizing and modern, Toronto is best discovered through a tour with a local guide to escape the tourist trail and discover local markets and hipster hangouts. In efforts to address climate change, the environmentally-conscious Toronto is actively supporting the take-up of electric vehicles, offering carbon offset credits, and even introduced a Green Roof Bylaw in 2009, requiring buildings to have a green roof for vegetation to grow. As Toronto is now blessed with incredible fruit and vegetable growers and nearby farms just outside of the city, the farm-to-table ethos has been adopted widely by many of the city’s most popular restaurants, where visitors can enjoy delicious food grown close to home.
Given its warm and welcoming atmosphere, its historic canal houses, cosy cafes, and small boutique shops, it’s no wonder the Dutch capital is so popular with travellers. Although Amsterdam has struggled for years with what some might call ‘too much of a good thing,’ in terms of tourism, it’s actively addressing the issue by encouraging visitors to explore outside of the crowded city centre and its infamous redlight district. By redirecting travellers to its many charming neighbourhoods, the hope is to spread the positive socioeconomic benefits of tourism more evenly throughout the city and surrounding areas. On a national level, the Dutch government is rewarding sustainable initiatives, taxing polluting activities, making investments in soft mobility
At the base of the Himalayas and located right on the Ganges River, Rishikesh is a beautiful city surrounded by rippling rivers and majestic mountains. An exquisite and calming place to nurture the soul, visitors can tap into the rejuvenating vibe by participating in wellness activities like a sound healing session. A world renowned destination for yoga, meditation, and hiking, the city has also taken multiple measures to be more sustainable, including becoming vegetarian by law and actively encouraging plant-based eating to support the environment. Rickshaws, one of the main traditional transport options in the city, have been fitted with CNG-powered engines in an effort to reduce pollution, while local artists are producing art installations using single-use plastics.

e're bringing a new found love of road trips with us, with travel restrictions easing and summer travel on the horizon. Staycations may have felt like the only option for the past few summers, but we've realised that those local adventures helped us appreciate the ease and flexibility of having our own wheels when on vacation. Last year, 48 percent of Indian tourists rented a car as part of their vacation, giving them all the freedom of car ownership - at a fraction of the cost, and pretty much anywhere in the world. This indicates that travellers intend to avoid taking public transportation on their next trip because they know that nothing says freedom like hitting the road and seeing where it takes them. It's all about giving people the freedom to explore the world on their own terms, which fits with today's trend toward more independent, personalised travel. ‘Making good time’ doesn’t mean going fast; it means making sure every minute is a joy. Motorways might be convenient, but the real adventures are to be found on the backroads, where we’re free to turn off and explore every interesting forest, building, turn off, or beach we happen to stumble across. The right car is vital Above all, the car needs to be right for the trip. A compact car can make sense if the itinerary includes lots of busy city streets - but for a long trip with plenty of people and stacks of luggage, there’s nothing like having some extra space to stretch out. Whether looking for an SUV for extra comfort and space or something with a bit more horsepower, Booking.com offers travellers a broad range of rental cars with easy-to-use search functions.
There’s nothing like organized chaos It’s great to keep it flexible… within a few basic parameters. For example? A circular route avoids a long, boring drive at the end of the trip. And even the most laid-back itineraries can benefit from including a few ‘musthave’ experiences. A refundable accommodation booking allows for a change of last-minute plan, and if you can’t actually make the trip for whatever reason, it’s worth bearing in mind that you can always opt for car rentals which come with free cancellation 48 hours before pick up. Going off-grid? Mobile data is a lot cheaper than it used to be, but that doesn’t mean the connection’s always reliable. So downloading maps and music ahead of time can make the trip a lot smoother and more enjoyable. Take ten The experts say it’s healthy to factor in a 10-minute break every two hours or so. orld Environment Day is here, reminding us to rethink our lifestyle and how it impacts the earth, our original home. Small, and smart changes in our daily choices can make an immense impact and help build a sustainable world. Simple but mindful decisions in design and materials can play a key role in building an environmentally friendly home. While these initiatives can make a difference in the environment, they can also prove to be incredibly rewarding and costeffective for the homeowner. For instance, a sustainably designed home can help lower energy bills, increase efficiency, and will overall require less maintenance over time. So, as World Environment Day approaches, here are some highlights from a few Airbnb ecofriendly stays, and the measures taken by the Hosts towards sustainability and a better tomorrow. Shivgarh - Heritage Farm Stay near Jaipur, Rajasthan
The eco-reserve spread over 200 acres, is the best way to get a real taste of farm experiences. Sustainability is the primary driver of how this stay functions. Its 400-year-old heritage structure has been retained as it is, along with the original surrounding. Solar power is used to make it more energy efficient. Most of the food and beverages served are sourced from local farms or grown locally. The Hosts have also ensured the integration of the local community of artisans, where you will find most of the furniture crafted locally, using local materials.
and rainwater harvesting. Even the construction is done through recycled bricks and all the furniture is handmade by local artisans. Our food is farm to table and we only source hyper locally. Along with keeping the environment safe, we want to grow with the local community”. Besides offering a rustic experience complete with an outhouse, a fire pit, and tree pads, the stay is also pet friendly! Meditation Hut, Heal Farm, near Bhimtal, Uaarakhand
The best way to appreciate nature is to be in it. Set in the middle of the forest near Sattal lake, trees can be seen as far as the eyes can see. Given the role of biodiversity in the ecosystem, the stay has been deliberately built in harmony with the surrounding natural biodiversity. The hosts also employ permaculture practices to retain the richness of the biodiverse surroundings. Besides being extremely cautious in integrating the exterior design into its natural habitat, the hosts have maximized natural light, and installed composting toilets and glass-roofed bathrooms among other things. In addition to these, there is ample room for yoga and meditation, creative workspaces, and a library. Speaking on the idea of the ‘gift economy system’, Airbnb Host Adnan says, “Nature is to be nurtured, both within and outside. We plant seeds we wish to see grow and prosper, both in soil and soul, this is an endeavour to give back as we too grow in the process”
Planning pays off Even the most spontaneous adventure is better with a bit of prep. Not just the physical stuff (from snacks and drinks to sunscreen and appropriate footwear), but answers to a few important questions, like “Who’s driving?” or “How many hours a day?”.

June 03, 2022 (IANSlife) Inside the Orange Box: A Lifetime of Collecting, an online sale of extraordinary handbags, will be on public preview at Christie’s Palazzo Clerici, Milan, from 17 to 19 June 2022. This single-owner auction represents a celebration of one collector’s passion, showcasing an encyclopedic collection of Hermès handbags, accessories, lifestyle objects, textiles, jewellery, watches and more. Comprising a total of 257 lots, including 145 handbags, the auction is open for bidding from 14 to 23 June 2022. Lucile Andreani, Head of Handbags, Christie’s EMEA: “We are thrilled to present Christie’s first Handbags & Accessories auction ever held in Italy, which follows the success of our first singleowner Handbags and Accessories sale, held in Paris earlier this year. This truly unparalleled offering exemplifies a lifetime of collecting by a passionate connoisseur of all things Hermès. Never before has such a large and dynamic collection appeared at auction and we are delighted to showcase these coveted limited edition pieces at Christie’s Milan this season.” Rachel Koffsky, International Head of Handbags, Christie’s: “This auction is a celebration of one collector’s passion. It presents a colourful and whimsical array of Hermès designs throughout the decades, amassed by a wise collector, patron and true connoisseur, whose passion and knowledge resonate throughout the designs.” A highlight lot of the auction is a rare 2010 denim and black Evercalf leather Shadow Birkin 40 customised by Petit H (estimate: €10,000 – 12,000). The Shadow Birkin was first introduced in 2009 by famed French designer, Gaultier made his mark on the house by reinterpreting classic styles in contemporary ways. For the Shadow, he sought to create a trompe-l’œil effect through the illusion of a top flat and sangles. In reality, the design is a raised impression, making it the only Birkin to stray from the traditional structure. The piece was customised by Petit H working with the collector, who as a patron of Hermès could choose custom designs from the workshop. The innovation and
reinterpretation of materials by the Hermès workshop is demonstrated in the artistry of the Picnic series. The delicate nature of osier, or wicker, means it is used by only the most skilled artisans. The resulting basket pattern is paired with Barenia leather, the material used in saddles. The collection will present an Osier Kelly 35 (estimate: €18,000-24,000), first seen in 2011 as part of the Spring Summer Collection by Jean Paul Gaultier. The 2016 Spring/ Summer Picnic Party collection saw the introduction of an expanded variety of wicker items, and the auction will offer designs of this period including the Picnic Farming Bag (estimate: €4,0006,000) and Picnic Garden Party (estimate: €3,000-4,000). A 2013 limited edition natural Barenia leather and toile Ghillies Birkin 35 (estimate: €6,0008,000), one of Hermès’s most coveted designs will be presented. Introduced in 2012, the Ghillies was an extension of the Haute bijouterie collection produced in 2011 by Pierre Hardy, Artistic Director of Jewellery at Hermès. The design is distinguished by its decorative trim, inspired by the broguing on the Scottish men’s dress shoe of the same name. The auction will showcase the sought-after 2011 Candy Collection. Available in four colours; Kiwi, Celeste, Lime and Rose Tyrien, this design was only produced in Epsom Leather featuring bright colours set against a darker contrasting hue inside. Further highlights include a beautiful selection of Sac à Malice handbags, first introduced in the late 1980s. These wearable works of art feature different themes, with the clasp playfully incorporated into the designs for example as a parachute, champagne cork or flagpole finial. A selection of Hermès accessories will be offered including the latest edition of Rodeo Pegase charms. Inspired by the mythical winged horse, this design has been coveted by collectors since its launch and can be even harder to find than a Hermès handbag. Created by Pascale Mussard at Hermès to create unique objects, designs and shapes by reusing pieces or only available in very limited editions.
