Deo Family Charitable Foundation commemorates Girmit Remembrance Day

Brisbane, May 24 (Australia India News Newsdesk)

The Deo Family Charitable Foundation recently hosted an event to commemorate Girmit Remembrance Day in Brisbane. Attended by members of the Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland and other guests, the event was an occasion to pay tribute to a significant chapter in history.

Girmit Remembrance Day holds profound significance, marking the arrival of the first Indian indentured laborers in Britishadministered Fiji in 1879. Over nearly four decades, from 1879 to 1916, approximately 60,000 Indians were recruited to toil on sugarcane plantations under conditions reminiscent of slavery.

The Deo Family Charitable Foundation's initiative underscores the importance of preserving and commemorating history.
