Chariot festival at the King George Square

A festival which brings all cultures together is the chariot festival. It was intriguing to see local Australians participate in the ratha yatra pulling the chariot, dancing and chanting Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare.

The parade of the chariot went around on Adelaide Street upto Elizabeth Street and back attracted many onlookers taking photos, some also paid their homage to the deity.

The parade culminated at the King George Square where the welcome ceremony was held. Cr. Vicki Howard, Cr. Robert Lambert and community leaders were present at the Chariot Festival. It was organised by the Iskon festival of chariots and Bhakti Yoga Centre. There were stalls of Henna, Indian clothes, jewelry, artifacts and of course food. The hospitality of the organizers was very warm and humbling. Vicki Howard in her speech addressing the crowd said that "I am grateful to be here with such wonderful people who are here to celebrate this festival. I keep telling everyone that what makes Brisbane great is it's people like you who are so welcoming of all cultures."

The original Festival happens in June at Jagganath Puri, which has been celebrated for over 2000 years. It is a spiritual festival which also showcases the culture of India which has trickled down from many years.
