Bravus Mining and Rockhampton Basketball to play on to 2024 Bravus Mining and Resources Community Manager Ally Foley said the company was delighted to be able to continue its support of Rocky’s basketball family on, and off, the court.

Bravus Mining and Resources and Rockhampton Basketball Inc will be shooting a perfect six from six following an extension of their Major Partnership agreement through to 2024.

Ms Foley said alongside encouraging grassroots engagement, the agreement will see the home of Rockhampton Basketball remain as Bravus Arena to provide a high-quality venue for all levels of competition as well as non-basketball not-for-

profit and community-run events. “Our local team members are big fans of Rocky basketball, whether that’s getting on the court themselves, watching their kids play, or cheering the Rockets and Cyclones on from the stands,” she said. “We’re also big fans of the work Rockhampton Basketball does to foster fun, wellbeing, teamwork, and sense of community that aligns so perfectly with our values.

“Rocky remains an integral part of who we are now that our Carmichael mine is in operations, and we’re delighted to sign on again with an organisation that delivers such broad benefit to our community.” Rockhampton Basketball Inc General Manager Wade Rebetzke said the partnership renewal was a significant momentum boost ahead of the city hosting the Basketball Queensland State Championships both this year

and in 2024. “The facilities and opportunities we can offer our athletes thanks to partners like Bravus Mining and Resources are fundamental to why Rockhampton Basketball continues to grow locally and perform nationally,” he said. “We’re proud to have the Bravus brand feature on the home of Rocky basketball for at least another two years and thank them for their enormous support of our organisation and region.”

Revolutionary mRNA manufacturing set for Greater Springfield materials, set to begin later this month from a facility in Greater Springfield.

Advance manufacturing of mRNA raw materials and purified mRNA will begin in Greater Springfield this month in a breakthrough step towards sovereign end-to-end vaccine manufacturing. Australian biotech company Southern RNA and Springfield City Group have announced a partnership in Greater Springfield’s BioPark Australia to develop a scalable mRNA therapeutics production facility. The first step will be Southern RNA’s production of mRNA raw

A larger planned facility, scheduled for opening in early 2024, would allow for mRNA drug substance production and the manufacture of other therapeutics, vaccines, and cancer treatment. The output would provide sovereign capabilities for Australia in times where supply chain are disrupted, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Southern RNA’s design has been informed by the work of its Canadian partner Northern RNA which operates a manufacturing facility in Calgary. Northern RNA is manufacturing a COVID vaccine for local market in Canada and is also exporting its products oversea to clients in the USA, India and other parts of the world. “Australia is set to become a global hub for mRNA therapeutics

product development, with announcements of Moderna, BioNTech and more recently Sanofi all converging downunder. Southern RNA will be integral in supporting the worldclass ecosystem that is emerging here, by offering services and raw materials to these leading pharmaceutical companies and Australian Researchers.” Southern RNA’s Head of Operations Garry Heaney said. “Currently, we are focusing on producing raw materials that enter into the manufacturing of mRNA vaccines (pDNA & Cap Analog). We also have the capabilities to produce purified mRNA to supply within Australia and in nearby regions. At the same time, we will begin constructing a larger Pilot facility that we aim to open in early 2024 with full accreditation from the Therapeutic Goods

Administration for GMP manufacturing. “We look forward to working with Springfield City Group, who have been innovative and forwardthinking in their efforts to bring this advance manufacturing capability to southeast Queensland.” Springfield City Group Chairman Maha Sinnathamby AM said Southern RNA’s goals aligned with the founding vision for the city. “We began Greater Springfield with the goals to enhance human and social capital and this is fundamental to Southern RNA’s approach,” Mr Sinnathamby said. “BioPark Australia is a 22-hectare innovation space that will bring the best and brightest together to provide solutions for this city and beyond. “The ability to create vaccines that will provide sovereign certainty

for Australia is a worthy goal as we’ve seen from the pandemic disruption of recent years. “Springfield City Group will continue to collaborate with innovative companies that can make use of the opportunities in our expanding Knowledge Precinct.” Southern RNA has global experience in medical innovations, utilising its North American partner to establish a breakthrough facility for Australia. “Australia needs to establish, onshore, domestic mRNA manufacturing capability to meet the current and future vaccination challenges that emerged during COVID-19,” Mr Heaney said. “BioPark Australia presents an exciting opportunity to make this happen with world-class production that can benefit the nation.”

New research shows healthy black-throated finch populations at the Carmichael mine World-first research into the Black-throated finch has found populations of the bird are thriving at Bravus Mining and Resources’ Carmichael mine. Bravus Mining and Resources has used the latest findings from three years of expert on-the-ground science to update its Black-throated Finch Management Plan, which is one of many State and Commonwealth regulatory documents that form the operation’s rigorous environmental approvals. New research shows healthy black-throated finch populations at the Carmichael mine

The number of habitat condition monitoring sites has more than doubled to 40 under the revised Management Plan, and the research ecologists will add motion-sensing cameras at water troughs and at small water bodies to the cutting-edge bioacoustics and automated radio telemetry tech already in use. The time researchers spend watching water sources have also been amended to 9am-midday after results showed that was when the vast majority of birds were coming to drink. The updates to the Management Plan were made in consultation with the Queensland Department of Environment and Science, and with feedback from the Blackthroated Finch Recovery Team. In all, the amendments build on the thousands of hours Bravus Mining and Resources has spent monitoring the species within the non-mined areas of the company’s leases and 33,000-hectare conservation area over a total of 12 years. Bravus Mining and Resources Chief Operating Officer Mick Crowe said the data collected to date from 449 individual birds fitted with a radio transmitter or uniquely identifiable coloured band showed the populations of finches local to the mine were doing well. “The Carmichael mine has some of the strictest environmental conditions of any resources project in Australia’s history,” Mr Crowe said. “As part of those conditions we developed a targeted

Bravus Mining and Resources Head of Community Kate Campbell said the business was proud to support White Cloud Foundation’s work in regional Queensland. “We’re proud to operate in regional Queensland and we always seek to back our local communities,” she said. “We recognise that many people who live in regional areas experience challenges in mental health and face additional difficulties accessing help. “The White Cloud Foundation delivers evidence-based, practical supports to people when they need it, such as the standout Meals for Mums service. “This is just another way we are helping regional communities to thrive on top of the jobs we support that help local families and the opportunities we create for local businesses. “Our Carmichael mine is exporting coal and ramping up production to meet growing demand so we are looking forward to sharing these kind of benefits with people in north and

central Queensland for decades to come.” The sponsorship is funded under the Bravus Community Partnership Program, which offers grants of up to $10,000 for not-for-profit businesses, groups, or associations in central and north Queensland. The program is aimed at enhancing communities through education, skills development, health, sustainability, environmental stewardship, and social welfare. Ms Campbell urged local community groups to apply for the annual program, which is awarded each quarter. “If your local group has a great community initiative, we would really encourage you to jump on our website and put in an application,” she said. Since construction commenced on the Carmichael Mine and Rail Project, Bravus has contributed more than $2 million to not-forprofit, charities, school groups and other organisations across the businesses’ operational footprint. Carmichael mine •

The Carmichael mine is producing high quality coal for export to nations around the world that want to lift their people out of energy poverty.

The mine continues to safely and efficiently ramp up to its constructed level of production which is in the order of 10 million tonnes per annum.

More than 2,600 people were employed and more than A$1 billion paid to regional Queensland contractors and businesses since construction began on the Carmichael project in 2019.

Although the primary construction phase is finished, Carmichael still has more than 750 people on site at any time while another third are on days off.

Carmichael coal is high quality with low sulphur, low trace elements and low ash which meets the import requirements of many international markets, including those in the Asia-Pacific region.

Carmichael coal is sold into the international seaborne export market and its ultimate destination depends on market demand.

Indian Supreme Court finds Hindenburg allegations against Adani to be false

Bravus’ parent company the Adani Group has welcomed the Indian Supreme Court’s findings of “no regulatory failure” and “no evident pattern of manipulation” following expert investigation of stock manipulation and financial fraud allegations levelled at the Group by USA-based short sellers Hindenburg Research. Indian stock market regulator the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) likewise told the Court it had "drawn a blank" in

www.indianews.com.au

its probe into alleged violations in money flows from offshore entities into the Adani Group. Both independent investigations were triggered after Hindenburg Research published a report on 24 January 2023 that used selective misinformation and discredited allegations to purposefully undermine the reputation of the Adani Group and profit by shortselling shares in Adani Group companies. The Group has vehemently denied

the allegations. The findings of the expert sixmember Committee appointed by the Supreme Court were made public late on Friday 19 May (Indian Standard Time) and state the “allegations of stock price manipulations or violation of Minimum Public Shareholding norms by Adani group companies cannot be proved at this stage.” “At this stage, taking into account explanations provided by SEBI (and) supported by empirical

facebook.com/indianewsaustralia

data, prima facie it would not be possible for the Committee to conclude there was a regulatory failure around the allegation of price manipulation," the Committee said in its report.

None of our businesses have been contacted by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission or the Australian Tax Office about any of the allegations in the Hindenburg Report.

The Committee’s report also categorically stated that short selling activity took place before the release of Hindenburg’s report, with evidence of a build-up in short positions and profiting from squaring off positions after prices crashed post-publication of Hindenburg’s disproved allegations.

It remains business as usual at our port, rail, and mine operations, which are exporting Australian coal, mined at the Carmichael mine and by our customers in the Bowen Basin, to the world.

Bravus is pleased the Committee’s findings confirm the Adani Group’s public position that the Hindenburg Research allegations were not only false and baseless, but were also motivated. All of Bravus’ businesses are Australian companies that comply with Australian corporations and securities legislation.

Our Australian operations support a sustainable and affordable energy mix that helps lift global populations out of poverty, while prioritising local jobs and community benefits at home. As a group of companies, Adani is the world’s largest solar company and is investing heavily in research and development of other alternative generation sources.

Risk to life and livelihoods as activist sets fires on Carmichael Mining Lease with Queensland’s fire service commissioner after an activist started an illegal bushfire on the Carmichael Mining Lease in central Queensland, dangerously close to fuel stores, our airstrip, and an accommodation village housing 500 mine workers. Activist fire viewed from the air

The illegal fire Mr McAvoy lit on 8 June 2023 as viewed from the air

Bravus Mining and Resources has sought an urgent meeting

On June 8, activist Coedie McAvoy allegedly used a butane torch to light a fire in tinder-dry bushland near a dam north of the operational Carmichael mine. The fire came within three and a half kilometres of the mine’s airstrip where 43,000 litres of extremely flammable aviation gasoline is stored. Another few hundred metres away is the Labona accommodation village which 500 mine workers call home. Mr McAvoy posted a video to social media of him in front of the fire and holding the butane torch, laughing "light it up, let’s go". Mr

McAvoy did not seek a permit and had no firefighting controls such as water trucks, graders, or additional fire breaks in place. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) has launched an investigation and Bravus is considering what civil action can be taken regarding any damage to mining infrastructure, as well as the loss of any fences, gates, or feed for cattle that are agisted on the land. A Bravus Mining and Resources spokesperson said the company had written to QFES Commissioner Greg Leach seeking a meeting and urgent intervention to stop Mr McAvoy's increasingly dangerous and antisocial behaviour before other illegal, uncontrolled, fires are lit and cost someone their life or livelihood.

“A bushfire that gets out of control can have catastrophic consequences and only good luck prevented this illegal and grossly irresponsible fire becoming a tragedy,” the spokesperson said. “This activist is lighting fires on our land without approval, without any of controls in place, and with no way to manage the fire should it get out of control. “In our view, that is reckless and dangerous behaviour. “The reality is had the wind changed, this fire could have killed someone. “This fire could have destroyed not only mine infrastructure but hundreds of hectares of pastoral land, livestock, fences, homesteads, and cattle yards, not to mention the flora and fauna we are conditioned to protect under our environmental authority.

“The activists unlawfully camped on our Mining Lease have shown time and time again they have no respect for other people’s safety, property, or the law. “Mr McAvoy is already before the courts for assaulting an Indigenous environmental ranger and a security guard as the pair went about their lawful work on the Mining Lease. “One of Mr McAvoy's associates, Noah Busiko, has also been charged with criminal offences for interfering with stock gates and disrupting cattle grazing in the region. “Enough is enough. It's time the authorities used the powers readily available to them under the law and removed Mr McAvoy and his activist mates from our Mining Lease and the scene of these crimes.”

Carmichael mine delivers on its promises to regional Queensland Mr Crowe said the business’ focus was now on continuing to export coal to meet growing global demand for thermal coal for energy, particularly in India and Southeast Asia. Contact: media@ bravus.com.au +61 438031780 2

and commissioning of the mine’s export infrastructure and those tonnes railed to the port for export during the first year of mining operations. All of the coal was safely transported from the mine to the North Queensland Export Terminal, north of Bowen, by the Bowen Rail Company using trains running on the 200-kilometre Carmichael Rail Network that connects the Galilee Basin to the Newlands Rail System into the Port of Abbot Point. Bowen Rail Company, also a Bravus Australia company, was established in 2020 and now employs more than 150 people in the local Bowen community to run, support, and maintain its locomotives and rollingstock. The first 10 million tonnes of high-quality thermal coal from the Carmichael mine near Clermont in central Queensland have been mined and railed for

export to nations overseas as planned. The milestone covers the shipments sent during testing

Data on thermal coal from the World Coal Association and the International Energy Agency • There is 2184GW of operational coal-fired power around the world. • At the end of 2022, there was 151GW of new coal-fired power under construction across 16 countries. This generation is due to come online by 2026. • Global coal consumption was forecast to rise by 1.2 per cent in 2022 to reach an all-time high of 8GT (ie 8 billion tonnes). • Coal is still the world’s largest single source of electricity at more than 37 per cent of all

www.indianews.com.au

generation. • Coal will still be 22 per cent of global generation in 2040, while taking a larger share of the load in emerging markets (39 per cent of generation in Southeast Asia in 2040). • 1.7 billion people gained access to electricity for the first time between 1990 and 2010. Of these, around 93 per cent did so through coal.

Bravus Mining and Resources Chief Operating Officer Mick Crowe said the 10 million tonnes railed milestone was an achievement shared by the tens of thousands of people who had so passionately supported the business over the years of obtaining its comprehensive approvals and building the mine and railway. “This is a terrific milestone for our team, our contracting partners, and supporters of our

business,” Mr Crowe said. “It also shows clear delivery on the commitments we’ve made, particularly to people in north and central Queensland, and just how much the coal industry can contribute when the job is done well. “We said at the outset of the Carmichael mine and rail Project that we’d deliver more than 1,500 direct jobs during the construction and testing and commissioning period. “We well and truly exceeded that with more than 2,600 people employed at the peak of construction and more than A$2 billion paid to regional Queensland contractors and businesses.

“There’s no question that Australian coal will play a role, alongside renewables, as part of the global energy mix that delivers reliable and affordable power with reduced emissions intensity,” Mr Crowe said. “Our advantage is we have all of our key Federal and State approvals in place, and we have the low-cost, high-quality reserves to be mining profitably through the price cycles for decades to come.

“That investment in jobs and contracts has flowed on in production and today we have more than 750 people working at Carmichael at any one time, with another third of that number on their operations swing. “Importantly the bulk of these people live in a regional city or town named Townsville, or Rockhampton, or Clermont, or Charters Towers or Mackay, and that’s something we’re very proud of.”

“That’s good news for those nations trying to lift their citizens out of energy poverty, and it’s good news for regional Queensland and the thousands of people who want a job in mining or to supply to our industry.”

• The Bowen Rail Company (BRC) is a Queensland rail freight business launched in August 2020.

151GW is more than double all existing capacity in the Australian energy market.

“We are already meeting the rising demand for thermal coal in our region with a product that not only has a lower emissions profile than coal supplied by international competitors, but one that is mined responsibly in a highly regulated environment with the right checks and balances in place.

Bowen Rail Company

Data from the World Coal Association shows 151GW of new coal-fired power is under construction in 16 countries and due to come online by 2026.

• BRC operates on the Carmichael Rail Network, a 200km railway connecting the Carmichael mine 160km northwest of Clermont in central Queensland to the

Newlands Rail System. • BRC transports high quality coal from Carmichael to the North Queensland Export Terminal north of Bowen. Here, Carmichael coal is exported to nations around the world where it is used alongside renewables to help lift people out of energy poverty while at the same time reducing emissions intensity as the world transitions over coming decades to a low carbon future.

insights for others working to study and protect this species around Queensland.”

In a new scientific article published in the international journal Ecological Informatics, the researchers detailed the use of machine learning to make major advances in the technology used to analyse bioacoustics data.

Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence and computer science where computers use data and algorithms to improve the accuracy of their performance, imitating human learning.

Bravus Mining and Resources Chief Operating Officer Mick Crowe said this latest research and innovation built on the company’s comprehensive work to protect the local finch population.

The innovation comes only months after world-first research into the Black-throated Finch found populations of the bird are thriving at Bravus Mining and Resources’ Carmichael mine.

“We developed a targeted Management Plan to protect local Black-throated Finches and their habitat as part of the strict environment conditions our Carmichael mine operates under,’’ Mr Crowe said. “Research undertaken over many years now shows those plans are working and the finches are thriving.

Members of the E2M research team downloading data from one of the 10 bioacoustics recorders installed on the Carmichael Mining Lease and 33,000 hectare conservation area

“However, our work is also contributing a new understanding of the species and this exciting development to unlock new monitoring technologies will help to improve the management of finch populations more broadly in Queensland. “Innovations like this help ensure our Management Plan remains world's best practice and that we continue to mine in a way that is responsible and creates jobs and business opportunities for regional Queenslanders for generations to come.” E2M Senior ecologist John van Osta said the research was developed in consultation with the Queensland Department of Environment and Science and would support the development of automated recognisers for other rare and difficult-to-survey bird species.

To support the management of the finch population, Bravus uses bioacoustics recordings to help track bird movements and to identify individual bird's home ranges, providing insights into their day-to-day behaviour. While bird calls can be recorded and later manually analysed, automated recognisers can instantly detect the target bird call and are a more accurate way to detect bird species than even visual surveys. However, they typically require many examples of bird vocalisations to accurately train. To produce a more accurate automated recogniser for the Black-throated Finch, researchers used more than 9000 hours of audio recordings of the species in the Carmichael mine conservation area. Using machine learning methods more common in medical imaging analysis and natural language processing, the program was taught how to target data to improve the finch model and manage ambiguous bird calls. The result was an automated recogniser with a library of more than 1000 Black-throated Finch calls and a model that can successfully identify the birds as well as human experts in the field.

“Research undertaken over many years now shows those plans are working and the finches are thriving.
