56th Queensland Parliament Grand Official Opening
Mr Paul de Jersey, Governor of Queensland inspecting the guards.
Q
ueensland's 56th parliament was officially opened on 14th Feb 2018. In a 45-minute speech to formally open the 56th Queensland Parliament, Governor Paul de Jersey confirmed the Parliament would move for a sitting in the regions and it will preside over an "era of profound change". The entire Queen sland Parliament will head to the regions this term, in a first for the Palaszczuk government. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has previously taken her cabinet to the regions, calling it "governing from the regions", but this will be the first time she has taken the whole 93 members of Parliament. "In recognition of the challenges and opportunities in regional Queensland, my government will continue its initiative of governing from the regions," he said. A 19-gun salute fired from Kangaroo Point and Mr de Jersey received the Royal Salute and inspected the guard, band and mounted police, and trumpets were played. He welcomed all MPs and urged them to work for the people of Queensland. "You will be making a significant contribution to the opportunities and responsibilities of the government and the state of Queensland in an era of profound change," he said. Following the opening speech, MPs
headed to the Speaker's Green for a garden party. Between 2002 and 2011 and across various governments, four sittings of the Parliament occurred in regional Queensland cities - Townsville, Rockhampton, Cairns and Mackay. The sitting in 2002 was the first time the Queensland Parliament had sat outside of Brisbane in its 142-year history. It is traditional for the Governor, the Queen's representative, to use the government's advice in drafting the speech, and outline its agenda over the coming term. Mr de Jersey said the government would be consultative, listen to Queenslanders and continue to consult with the crossbench. "Those members sitting on the crossbenchers can be assured that my government's commitment to consult applies equally to them," he said. "They can expect regular briefings on key matters and important legislation that will be put before this Parliament. "They can expect the Parliamentary committee processes to provide scrutiny of the government's legislative program and its expenditure." Mr de Jersey also welcomed MPs back to Parliament for 2018.

"Unlike the first Parliament opened by [Governor] Sir George Bowen, this Parliament has strong, representation of women and among those is the first member of Torres Strait descent, the member for Cook Ms. Cynthia Lui, from Yam Island, some 2232 kilometres from here," he said. Other priorities on the agenda include health and education, cyberbullying, working with federal and local government and jobs. In the audience, in addition to sitting MPs, was Ms Palaszczuk's father and former minister Henry Palaszczuk, Labor state secretary Julie-Ann Campbell, Queensland Law Society deputy president Bill Potts, Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers and outgoing speaker Peter Wellington. The coming term of office will be a shorter "buffer" term of just under three years following the introduction of fixed four-year terms, with the next election already set for October 31, 2020. Usual sittings of Parliament begin on 15th Feb 2018, with the government planning to introduce 16 bills.

Queensland’s Top Year 12 graduates cheer at the Achievement Awards!
Outstanding Academic Achievers 2017
M
ore than 80 per cent of Queensland year 12 OP students have achieved an OP 1-15 this year, according to Education Minister Grace Grace. Individual results were released overnight with more OP1s having been achieved this year compared to 2016 and more students having completed year 12. There were more year 12 students in this year's cohort, with 53,098 teenagers starting their final year of schooling compared to 51,613 last year. About 93 per cent of year 12 students have passed their studies and have earned their Queensland Certificate of Education, with these numbers on par with last year. A total of 26,859 students chose the OP pathway and 22,121 of these have achieved a result of OP1-15. This equates to more than 82 per cent of OP students having achieved a 15 or better - a one per cent increase compared to last year. A total of 753 students have reached an OP1, equating to about 3.5 per cent of the OP cohort - which is the same as last year. Education Minister Grace Grace today recognised the state’s top Year 12 graduates from the class of 2017 at the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) Achievement Awards on 17th February 2018 at State Library of Queensland. The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) host-
ed the event at the State Library in South Bank where 32 students from 20 state and non-state schools received prizes in six categories. “These annual awards are a special opportunity to honour the hard work and commitment of our top students and the teachers and families who supported them,” Ms Grace said. “This year’s overall Outstanding Academic Achiever award went to Rachel Hauenschild of Kenmore State High School who received a certificate, trophy, and $5000 prize money. “She achieved exceptionally highly in all her school subjects, the Queensland Core Skills Test, tertiary entrance ranking, and in two university subjects and will pursue her passion for mathematics at The University of Queensland where she has a scholarship. “I look forward to hearing Rachel’s name associated with many more achievements in the future.” Rachel Hauenschild wanted to pursue a career in mathematics. Upon receiving Vice- Chancellor’s scholarship, she will be studying Bachelor of Mathematics at University of Queensland. She shared that when she found out that she had won an award she felt privileged to be recognised for her hard work and thanked her parents for their support and encouragement.

Minister Grace said the 2017 Year 12 cohort was the largest ever to graduate. “Approximately 53,000 Queensland students completed Year 12 last year, so the 32 students who’ve been recognised today can be very proud of their achievements. QCAA chief executive officer Chris Rider said the awards highlighted the strength in depth of secondary schooling in Queensland. “Queensland schools support pathways to further education, training and work for all Year 12 students, while also enabling the very brightest to achieve to their full potential,” Mr Rider said. “All today’s award winners are well placed to be successful at university and make valuable contributions to the community in their careers.” Aditya Chilukuri from Brisbane State High School was the only student of Indian Origin in Distinguished Academic Achievers list. His career goal is to pursue research or entrepreneurship in computer science or engineering. He shared that his favourite subjects are Chemistry and Economics. He feels that chemistry gives a very real practical context to the world. The QCE Achievement Awards are sponsored by Bond University, Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, The University of Queensland and University of Southern Queensland.

Prime Minister Modi Interacts with Students, Talks About Exam Stress during Pariksha Pe Charcha
PM Modi interacting with students
Audience at the event
Key Points
I
ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with students at Delhi's Talkatora Stadium. The session - "Pariksha Par Charcha", saw over 1,400 students listening to PM Modi. He took questions related to exam stress from students from across the country. The Prime Minister's Office had received thousands of questions from students across the country, ranging from stress and parental pressure to yoga and how to deal with the competition. During Narendra Modi's 'Pariksha pe Charcha' interaction with students of Class 10 and 12 on exam-related stress, one student in the audience asked the prime minister if he himself was prepared for his 'exam' next year, the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. "How are you preparing since you'll also be facing an exam in the form of Lok Sabha elections next year?" Girish Singh, a Class 11 student of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Mungeshpur, New Delhi asked.
In response, Modi smiled and said that had he been the student's teacher, he'd advise him to become a journalist because only a journalist could've thrown him such a tricky question. Modi also pointed out that elections come and go but it is the time that he invested in the service of 125 crore Indians as that matters more. Emphasising on the need to disengage from the end goal to focus on the task at hand, he said that politics is not in his nature and that he wants to keep doing something constructive. “I always believe that you keep studying, trying to learn, and keep all focus on learning. Make the student inside you as energetic as possible. Make this your lifestyle... Exam, result and marks should be a by-product. You have done your work; the result will come. If you go by marks, you may not achieve what we really want... I work on the same principle in politics.”
“All my time, energy and strength and mental capability, all should be spent on the 1.25 crore Indians. Elections will come and go, they are all by-products,” he said. Modi added: “Our situation is such that you have exams once in a year, we have exams 24 hours in a day.” He recalled how the Jana Sangh, the predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), lost all the seats in a Gujarat election. “They had 103 candidates. Whoever wanted to fight was given a ticket. Out of 103, the security deposit of 99 was forfeited. Four candidates survived. With their deposit money, they had a party and distributed sweets.” He recalled how the workers celebrated with that money and said that it is this jovial humility that takes people forward in life. Given that a high-octane election campaign is in its final phase in Tripura. It seemed like Modi's message
wasn't only meant for students but also for his party workers. Modi said that he takes an exam every day, and his credentials are put under the spotlight even when a small election takes place. He spoke about how ambition takes a toll on happiness and how dreams should be grounded in the joys of every day instead of setting a long-term goal. “You become what you become, every single day,” he said. Modi also spoke about the need to develop EQ or emotional quotient. “Today, I am a student and you are my examiner. You can give me marks out of 10 later. Don't think of me as the prime minister but as a friend,” Modi said, responding to questions from the students gathered at the stadium as well as those who wrote in their queries and doubts. Answering a question on how to handle the stress some students undergo even after preparation, Modi

said, “We all prepare honestly but if we don’t have confidence, we tend to forget things at the last minute. Self-confidence comes by challenging ourselves and working hard. We should always think of bettering ourselves.” “People think concentration is a major thing that has to be learnt. But that is not true. Everyone throughout the day does something which requires complete concentration,” he said. Modi has displayed a keen interest in the increasing stress levels of school and college students across the country. Recently, he penned a book Exam Warriors addressing the issue. In his monthly radio program 'Mann Ki Baat', the prime minister had urged students to celebrate examinations like festivals to reduce stress.

Q
ueenslanders can now jump online and apply for rebates of up to $300 on energy efficient appliances to save on their electricity bills. Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said first rebates should be flowing back into the first applicants’ bank accounts by the end of February. “People who have already bought new energy-efficient fridges, air-cons and washing machines since 1 January, and have registered for the rebate,
have 30 days from tomorrow to get those applications in,” he said. “Of course, you have to meet the criteria to receive the rebate. “If you haven’t bought one already, I’d encourage householders to consider buying appliances with at least a fourstar energy rating. “It’s is one of the best ways to save on your electricity bill, and that’s why this rebate is part of our $2 billion Affordable Energy Plan – to help make Queenslanders’ power bills more affordable.”
Energy Efficiency Council chief executive officer Luke Menzel said that big appliances humming away in the background were often massive energy hogs, and that new models with a high star rating could be much cheaper to run. “Upgrading to a new, more efficient fridge or air conditioner can be one of the easiest ways of cutting your energy bill,” he said. “It’s great news that the Palaszczuk Government is helping Queenslanders upgrade their appliances, so families
can lock in those savings as quickly as possible.” Member for Mount Ommaney Jess Pugh said families in her local area could save up to $700 per year simply by replacing a 30-year-old fridge. “My message to my constituents is to look hard at this offer – especially after the week we’ve had with the aircons blazing,” she said. The rebates apply to new, eligible fourstar or higher appliances purchased from 1 January 2018: $200 for washing machines; $250 for fridges and

Nirav Modi & the Banking Case
O
n 14th Feb morning, Punjab National Bank informed the Bombay Stock Exchange that it has detected some "fraudulent and unauthorized transactions" in one of its branches in Mumbai to the tune of $1771.69 million (approx.). Following the announcement, the share price of the State-owned bank plunged 10%. Nirav Modi and his three firmsDiamond R Us, Solar Exports and Stellar Diamonds-were allegedly procuring the LoUs from the PNB's Brady Road branch for the past seven years. Punjab National Bank (PNB), the country's second-largest public-sector lender, is now in the middle of almost $2billion transaction fraud case. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) received two complaints from PNB against billionaire diamantaire Nirav Modi and a jeweler company alleging fraudulent transactions worth about ₹11,400 crores, the Press Trust of India reported. This is in addition to the ₹280-crore fraud case that he

is already under investigation for, again filed by PNB. Recently the revenue department has issued tax notices to the banks that loaned money to companies run by Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi - the jewellers in the eye of the storm. Who is Nirav Modi? Nirav Modi, the billionaire in the middle of this controversy, is a luxury diamond jewelry designer who was ranked #57 in the Forbes list of India's billionaires in 2017. He is the founder and creative director of the Nirav Modi chain of diamond jewelry retail stores, and is the Chairman of Firestar International, the parent of the Nirav Modi chain, which has stores in key markets across the globe. His designs have been worn to the Oscars by 'Hidden Figures' star Taraji P. Henson and to the Golden Globes by Dakota Johnson, among others. Actor Priyanka Chopra is the brand ambassador. How the fraud was detected According to the complaint filed by PNB with the CBI on January 28,
the fraudulent issuance of Letters of Undertakings (LOU) was detected at the Mid Corporate Branch, Brady House in Mumbai. A set of partnership firms -- Diamond R US, Solar Exports and Stellar Diamonds -- approached the bank on January 16 with a set of import documents and requested for Buyer's Credit to make payments to overseas suppliers. The firms have Nirav Modi, his brother Nishal Modi, Mr. Nirav's wife Ami Nirav Modi, and Mehul Chinubhai Chokshi as partners. Buyers Credit is, typically, a shortterm loan facility extended to an importer by a bank to finance goods and services. It is a common mode of transaction in international trade where a bank extends credit to the importer and a finance agency based in the exporter's country guarantees the loan. As there was no sanctioned limit in the name of the firms, the branch officials requested the firms to furnish 100% cash margin for issuing the LOU for raising the Buyer's
SBI launches Global NRI centre at Kochi
T
he State Bank of India (SBI) launched its Global NRI (GNC) center, a one-stop customer service solution for all NRI banking related services, in Kochi. Leveraging its strong NRI customer base of over 33 lakhs as on January 31, the bank, through its GNC aims to centralize operations which are currently spread across 16 circles, 92 NRI branches in 66 different locations and several NRI intensive branches. The GNC will be a single point of contact for SBI branches, customers, relationship managers, representative offices and foreign offices. NRI customers can now avail SBI’s banking services from any part of the world, through a wide range of online facilities like account opening, inprinciple sanctions of loans and instant remittances, state-of-art technology, professional and specialized dedicated teams, a 24X7 contact center to offer customer support and issue resolution. To further enhance the service experience for NRIs, the bank also launched other related services such as Wealth
management, SBI Intelligent Assist, Free Post box service, SBI Mingle for NRI’s, and Remittance facility for US based customers. “We have witnessed consistent growth of our NRI banking portfolio. Our endeavor is to offer all our products and services on digital platform so that our NRI customers experience the ease of banking with us from wherever they are in the world and that’s why we have centralized all our services and offering under the Global NRI center besides offering them specialized services,” said chairman SBI, Rajnish Kumar. “Technological advancements are creating opportunities to modernise and de-risk the way vital remittances are transferred across borders. Formal remittances are also seen as a key stepping stone to improving financial inclusion by encouraging more people to have bank accounts,” Kumar added. SBI embarked on its international journey with the opening of its first international branch in Colombo in 1864. Today, it boasts of 207 offices in 37 countries.
Credit. At this, the firms contested that they have been availing this facility in the past; but the branch records do not corroborate this. On digging further, the bank officials discovered that two of its employees had fraudulently issued LOUs in the past without following prescribed procedures and approvals. The employees had then transmitted SWIFT instructions to the overseas branches of Indian banks for raising Buyer's Credit without making entries in banking system to avoid detection. The complaint also said that the funds so raised for the payment of the Import Bills have not been utilized for such purposes in many cases. As per the FIR, five of the SWIFT messages (SWIFT is a messaging network used by financial institutions to securely transmit instruction) were issued to Allahabad Bank in Hong Kong and three to Axis Bank in Hong Kong. What will happen now? One of the worrying aspects of the scam is that in its statement, PNB
says that based on the fraudulent transactions, other banks appear to have advanced money to the customers abroad. It goes on to add that these transactions are contingent in nature and any liability arising out of these on the bank will have to be decided based on the law and genuineness of underlying transactions. Meanwhile, Joint Secretary in Department of Financial Services Lok Rajan said “I don’t think this is out of control or too big a worry at this point. That is my broad sense.” However, the ₹11,400-crore scam comes at a time when the Central government is attempting to provide a breather to ailing PSBs, having announced a ₹2.11 lakh crore capital infusion to the sector in October 2017. As of now, the only good that could come out of the affair would be some fresh consideration to implementing better practices in public sector banking.

In Memoriam: Sridevi, the First Major Female Superstar of Indian Cinema
B
ollywood actress Sridevi who charmed audiences with her larger-than-life performances died on February 24, 2018 in Dubai. The 54-year-old actress drowned in the bathtub in her hotel room in Dubai, and after a short investigation local police ruled out foul play, allowing her remains to be returned to India. She is survived by her husband Boney Kapoor and two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi. Sridevi is considered as the Bollywood’s first female superstar who gave several box-office hits with no man beside her in a leading role. Born in Sivakasi, a small town in Tamil Nadu famous for its firecracker factories, she was the daughter of K Ayyappan, a lawyer, and his wife, Rajeshwari. The family ran a small plastic manufacturing unit. Sridevi’s mother and her sister Srilata often accompanied her on film shoots. Adept in several South Indian languages, in her early career, Sridevi was involved in the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema industries. But she also managed what was for her time a rare crossover from the southern film industry, thereby gaining nationwide recognition and appeal. In fact, many of the early roles that set her on the path to becoming Bollywood’s first female superstar were remakes in Hindi of regional-language hits, including the films Himmatwala and Sadma (both 1983). Sridevi retained her striking good looks, and in her most popular roles
portrayed strong, funny women: the investigative journalist in Mr India (1987) who is not above going under cover as a cabaret dancer; the street-smart dancer in ChaalBaaz (1989), whose stunt scenes are also comic ones; and the Afghan warrior in Khuda Gawah (1992) who rides a horse into battle. Her mercurially comic facial expressions, her overthe-top outfits and the dance moves were all a piece with the gusto and spontaneity of her acting. Sridevi was in her heyday a massive box office draw, in addition to which she won five Filmfare Awards, the Hindi movie industry's answer to the Oscars. After marrying Boney Kapoor in 1996, Sridevi got another Filmfare nod for her performance in 1997's Judaai before withdrawing from the movies. A 15-year big screen hiatus followed, during which she and Boney brought up two daughters - Jhanvi, 20, and Khushi, 17. The time eventually came when Sridevi itched to return to films, and she launched her comeback with the 2012 hit English Vinglish, which India submitted unsuccessfully to the Oscars. Her incredible film career saw her work in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, and in 2013 she was honored with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest of the civilian honors granted by the Government of India. Her last film release was the 2017 thriller Mom, which was reported to be her 300th motion picture.

Before cremation, Sridevi's mortal remains were kept in Celebration Sports Club for three hours as she wore a red kaanjeevaram and gold jewelry, wrapped in national tricolor and placed in a glass casket decked with flowers. Outside Celebration Sports Club, fans of Sridevi from across the country gathered with flowers and posters to bid a fond farewell. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Rekha, Vidya Balan, Shahid Kapoor and wife Mira Rajput, Hema Malini and her daughter Esha Deol, Sushmita Sen and Farah Khan apart from the Kapoor family gathered at the condolence meet as well. During her funeral procession towards Vile Parle Seva Samaj Crematorium, thousands took to the streets in the western city of Mumbai along with Sridevi’s daughters Khushi and Janhvi, her widower Boney Kapoor, Bollywood royalty including Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The death of Sridevi has also led to a wave of speculation over the pressures on the industry's leading women and the murkiness behind their success. A last post was shared on Sridevi's Twitter on 28th Feb 2018, hours after she was cremated with state honors in Mumbai. Sridevi's husband Boney Kapoor posted an emotional note from her account, putting into words the void his wife's death has left and asking that the family be allowed to grieve in private.
Sridevi Kapoor was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, for services to the movie industry.

Indian News Queensland | ACHIEVEMENTS
Women’s Day Special Dr. Tanya Unni - Empowering Society Through Art You were award winning child artist in films. Yet you choose dance over films. Why? The kind of excitement and thrill you get, when you perform a piece of art you love, is what inspires one to keep performing. I get that kind of adrenaline rush when I perform classical dances on stage. I worked in films at a very young age. But the thrill I experience in performing dance made me follow my heart. Though I have offers from films even now, I prefer chasing my own dreams in my own time. I am very passionate about dance, Indian art forms and culture. Though I have learned and performed Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam on stage shows. Out of all the dances I am absolutely mesmerised by Mohiniattam which made me delve further into it, research and perform. I want to bridge the cultural gaps and build harmony through integration of cultural forms. I believe art can bridge the gap in multicultural community thus “Bond beyond Border” is what I aim through my dances. Hence I chose the theme for my theatrical as “Empowering society through art”.
I
nternational Women’s Day is a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements and is about admiring, appreciating and making every woman feel special for their respective role in all our lives. The day is marked around the world with arts performances, talks, rallies, networking events, conferences and marches. India is a country where women are worshipped in many forms. From Sarojini Naidu to Kalpana Chawla, Indian women have been looked high stupendously for their unmatched contribution in every field though sometimes we fail to identify them in our real day-to-day lives. Let us look at the amazing women around us who expertly juggle between personal, professional lives and also contributes to the community. One such remarkable woman is Dr. Tanya Unni. Hailing from one of the most prominent literary families in Kerala-India, she is a very talented doctor who has founded one of the largest chain of non-corporate medical centers in Gold Coast, Australia and is also an established dancer who promotes all art forms through her organization Australian School of Indian Arts (ASIA). Tanya is a doctor in dermatology by profession. She started learning dance at the age of 3 and has won several awards in classical dances in India. She was notable child artiste in Film industry and even won the Kerala State Film Award for ‘Best Child Artist’ at the age of 7. She is the great granddaughter of Late O.
www.indiannewsqld.com.au
Chandu Menon, who authored the first major Malayalam novel Indulekha in 1892.
Why did you choose doctor as profession? My grandfather, late Dr KG Menon was a doctor. I grew up seeing him
serve people and I knew then I that I want to be a doctor. It was never an option. Serving people, helping community these were instilled in me at a very young age because of him. Who all are there in your family? I live in Gold Coast with my two sons and my soulmate, business partner and best friend all rolled into one: Ameer. He is extremely supportive and the reason I can follow my dreams. My eldest son just started school and my younger one is still a toddler. Who are the inspiring women in your life? Parents are always looked upon for inspiration by children. My parents have always supported and inspired me. But one woman I really look up to is Mother Teresa. Apart from my grandfather the reason I wanted to become a doctor and serve people was because of her. Her selfless service touched my heart and it gave me the strongest desire to serve the community in whichever way I can. The dancers I grew up watching- be it Sridevi, Madhuri in Bollywood or professional performers, they inspired me in learning those small moves in dance and build up my passion.
Tell us about your recent musical performance “Indulekha”. I grew up hearing the name of ‘Indulekha’ always in my home. I read the book during my teenage years and it captivated me. The character influenced me so much that I developed a kind of affinity towards her, bordering on hero worship. I even wished my parents had named me after her. I often tried to put myself into the skin of Indulekha, the beautiful, accomplished and independent woman. For me Indulekha wasn't just a heroine created by my great-great-grandfather, O. Chandu Menon in his novel, she was the living embodiment of modern woman. So, I always wanted to do something on my own with this work, but I was not sure of how to go about it. During a casual visit by Soorya Krishnamoorthy to my place, he stoked my curiosity on ‘Indulekha’ and convinced me to interpret it through dance. The idea stuck in my mind and finally I got to portray the character in a “theatre musical” presenting a new dance style in Trivandrum, Kerala. Instead of a page by page adaptation of the novel, Soorya sir helped me script it by connecting the social situation of that time to the present, with situations that are similar to my own personal life. Hence the theatrical Indulekha is based on ”Journey through the author's mind.” FInally I was able to present it with artist Vineet Kumar in January this year.

What is the message you would like to give on women’s day? How do you manage being doctor, dance and family? (Laughs) I don't manage, I just cope with it!! I strongly believe in the philosophy “ You are what you THINK you are”. And this is one strong message I want to give to all women. Whatever be the circumstances and responsibilities we have, we need to THINK positive, be constructive, speak assertive first. If we think Positive we will develop the energy to move forward and everything will fall into place. I strongly believe Universe does help you to achieve your dreams if you take the first step. If you really want something, train the mind, start working with positive thoughts, juggle with possibilities. Changes in simple things will pave way to bigger things in life. And give the strength to move forward and chase your dreams. Dr. Tanya Unni is truly an inspiration and a role model for all women who wish to balance their profession, passion and family. She has proved with her own life that things can be worked out if you have the determination and Will to make it work. Team INQ would like to thank Dr. Tanya Unni for her contributions. Less than a month for Australia’s biggest sporting event Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018!
B
adminton is one of the fastest racket sports in the world and at GC2018, the sport is set to entertain the crowds at Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre. The Commonwealth’s best athletes will come head to head in a test of speed, agility and precision. With the Badminton mixed teams draw announced today, here’s everything you need to know about the speedy sport, before the Games begins. How it works At GC2018, six medal events will be on display including the men’s and women’s singles and doubles, the mixed doubles and the mixed team event. The first player to reach 21 by two clear points wins the game and the best of three games wins the match. At deuce (20-all) the team or player that scores two points in a row wins the game. The Commonwealth Games is one of the few competitions to feature the mixed teams event. The exciting format brings men and women and singles and doubles athletes together and the strongest team across all disciplines prevails. It starts with the group stage, which sees nations face off against their opponents across all five matches men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, women’s singles and mixed doubles. Teams play all other three nations in their group before the top two teams play for medals in the knockout rounds.
The team that wins the most matches will finish at the top of their group. For example, if one team wins all of the five matches contested in a round they will have a score of five for that round, and their opponent will have a score of zero. The top two teams progress to the knockout rounds. The mixed team event is held for the first five days of Badminton competition, with medals decided on Monday, 9 April, and can provide an exciting preview of the singles and doubles action to come. The following six days of competition will feature the singles and doubles events, including the mixed doubles. The training Badminton players cover a distance of approximately 5km per match, according to three-time Oceania champion and Olympian, Wendy Chen. “It requires a lot of body reflexes and great eye and hand coordination. We’re constantly jumping and landing, we’re constantly turning, all the time, you have to come back to the centre position after each shot.” Training for badminton is intense, ensuring athletes are prepared for the long rallies, and impact on their bodies. For Chen, a training week can include three weight training and court sessions and four gym and running sessions. “It’s really high intensity, we have to be really, really fit,” she said.

GC2018 Multicultural Community Ambassador, Wai Kiong Chan hosted the draw announcement event and shared the Malaysian community’s excitement about the Games. “It’s great that the Commonwealth Games brings everyone together as there are so many other countries from various regions of the Commonwealth taking part.” GOLDOC CEO Mark Peters was also looking forward to the competition and expected the Badminton competition to draw widespread interest across the world.
Commonwealth contenders The competition is shaping to be fast and fierce at GC2018. Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei is one of the sport’s highest profile athletes and he took out the singles title in 2006 and 2010 before missing Glasgow due to injury. He set the fastest smash in history in 2015, clocking 408 km/h, an unbelievable feat when you consider the fastest recorded tennis serve is 263.4km/h, set by Australia’s Sam Groth. “Lee Chong Wei has been dominating the sport for more than 10 years, he’s even written a book about it,” Chen said. In the women’s competition, India is expected to be tough competition with former world number one and Delhi 2010 gold medallist Saina Nehwal and Glasgow 2014 bronze medallist Pursala Venkata Sindhu hopeful to take to the court at the Games. Festival 2018 is a celebration of Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. It is 12 action-packed days of free culture running from 4 - 15 April 2018 where one can experience music, theatre, circus, dance, ideas, visual arts and film from the Gold Coast, Australia and across the globe. Lifschitz, Festival 2018 Creative Director Kate Fell and Bleach* Festival Artistic Director Louise Bezzina form the creative brain power behind the 12-day program of arts and cultural events at GC2018. Fell has worked in the arts and culture industry for over 15 years and has seen Queensland’s arts and cultural landscape evolve, particularly in the last five years. A major sporting event like the Commonwealth Games provides a platform for sport and art to come together, a natural connection, Creative Director Kate Fell rationalised, but the sport’s influence on the performances on stage might not be what you expect. The festival has been programmed in the form of three acts: Encounters, Change and Aspire. The three themes are threaded through the program, which includes more than 1,000 performances from music to theatre, circus, dance, visual art and film.

It is best known around the world for the organic coloured rice powder that is thrown on each other, leaving festival goers coated in colour by the end of the day. Bhajan (Satsang) on Friday 16 March at Helensvale Community Centre, 31 Discovery Drive from 7.15pm to 9pm Our usual bhajan day is on the 3rd Friday of every month where everyone enjoys the satsang (association of like minds to seek the truth) and brings a plate to share. In this Kali Yuga (age of strife and discord), rig veda (hymns of love/ devotion e.g. gayatri mantra) and sama veda (musical chants) via satsang are the easiest form of smoothing life’s rollercoaster rides.

T
he world, today, is facing an unsurmountable problem of rising health care costs. The price of diagnostic tests, treatment facilities, medicines, health insurance, associated travel and accessibility – is beyond the reach of even those who are capable of paying for the same, let alone the underprivileged and most vulnerable sections of society. Around the world, governments are unable to find the solution to this grave problem. Imagine the plight of a family where a new born child is diagnosed of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) that needs corrective surgery as treatment and key to survival, but which costs few thousand dollars, even at the most reasonably priced hospital. This dismal picture, however, has a new ray of hope in the form of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital Centres for Child Heart Care offering best quality treatment to children with Congenital Heart Disease, totally free-of-cost. This article describes the selfless service offered by these centres, dedicated to humanity. Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is one of the most life-threatening conditions affecting young children, accounting for nearly one-third of all major congenital defects. CHD refers to a defect in the structure or function of the heart, commonly known as “hole in the heart”. However, this privilege of early diagnosis and timely management is restricted to children in developed countries only. Unfortunately, majority of children born in developing countries and afflicted with CHD do not get the necessary care, leading to high morbidity and mortality.

Incredible hidden places in India to visit
T
he world is home to many incredible destinations that have yet to be overrun by tourists. India has got many interesting and unexplored places. India is like a deep tunnel, where you could dig in to explore deeper and still you find something new, every moment. Here are the best less known travel destinations in India.
DZONGU (NORTH SIKKIM)
CHAKRATA (UTTARAKHAND)
This virgin remote village is a homeland of the Lepcha community. The beauty of this place lies in the rawness of the nature. You can explore about lepchas community, which is an authentic yet beautiful community in a sense that takes pride in showcasing their cultural programs and their eating habits.
UDAYAGIRI AND KHANDAGIRI CAVES (ODISHA) In the Indian state of Odisha, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves are the earliest group of Jain rock-cut shelters. A feed for the eyes, these caves are of high importance preserving history, rock-cut architecture, art and religion. The wall carvings and rock-cut painting in these caves tell us much about the origin and development of Jainism.
DHANUSHKODI (TAMIL NADU) Built by Nature after one of the worst storms that Tamil Nadu has ever seen, Dhanushkodi can aptly be called a gift from beyond. Azure sea, white sand beaches and a lazy, idyllic vibe, makes Dhanushkodi one of the most beautiful yet sparsely known beaches in India. October- February are the best months to visit Dhanushkodi. Summers are mild, but the monsoons see showers as well as storms, so you might want to steer clear of Dhanushkodi at that time.
Bored of travelling clichéd hill stations like Dehradun, Mussoorie, Nainital, Shimla and Almora? Take a trip to exotic destination Chakrata which is only 93kms from Dehradun. This lesser- known destination is magical and blessed with beautiful hills, which is covered by grass and meadows and another side is forest laden. The USP of this place is its calmness and relaxing atmosphere.
LEPCHAJAGAT (WEST BENGAL) This peace-filled destination provides you a much-needed break from your monotonous life. It’s a perfect place to explore a diversion from the queens of hills, Darjeeling. The place has accumulated popularity with the beautiful views of the mountain Kanchenjunga.
MAHESHWAR (MADHYA PRADESH) If Varanasi is a bit crowded for you, then head to Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh. Known as the Varanasi of Central India, this small holy town is located on the banks of the Narmada river and is dedicated to the deity Lord Shiva. A highly spiritual place, Maheshwar draws in pilgrims and holy men to its many ancient temples and ghats. You can take a sunset boat ride down the river banks and explore the city’s famous textile markets.
NIGHOJ POTHOLES (MAHARASHTRA) The potholes are the result of the Kukadi River which forms a deep canyon like structures carved in the rock beds. The best time to venture a trip to see these astonishing potholes are summers as the water level goes down in the river. This geological miracle will surely excite you to visit this place, many times. PATAN (GUJARAT) This is a little visited town, but its narrow streets are bordered by the elaborate wooden houses with more than 100 Jain temples, with their intricate carvings. There are ethereal and elegant hand-woven sarees, which makes this place even more than a worth visit with your husband and family. MAJULI (ASSAM) Majuli, one of the most surreal places in India is also the World’s largest river island. Connected via boats with the city of Jorhat, Majuli is a beautiful exotic location, yet unknown to most of the tourists in India. Majuli has also been nominated for one of the places in UNESCO World’s Heritage List. The culture, mostly very locally defined due to high tribal population is quite unique and it has been referred as the cultural capital of Assam. The ideal time to visit Majuli is between October to March, however the monsoons are also quite beautiful in Majuli.
HAMPI (KARNATAKA) Set in a spell-binding landscape of giant red rock boulders, palm grove forests and green rice paddies, the ancient and majestic temples leave you wondering how such a place could have existed so long ago. As a World Heritage Site, Hampi does attract a tourist crowd, but if you stay on the other side of the river from the bazaar (accessible only by paddle boat!) you’ll be able to relax in the paddy fields and watch sunset over the red rock plains. www.indiannewsqld.com.au

The Important Things in Life
A
philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So, the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar. He then asked once more if the jar was
full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.” “Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.” “If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to
the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party, or fix the disposal.” “If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party, or fix the disposal.” “Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

Indian News Queensland | HOROSCOPE
Horoscope March 2018 Aries
Mar 20 – Apr 20 Right now, at the first of this month you’re feeling as though you’re overworked and overburdened. In fact, it’s difficult to hold back the tears sometimes. You feel as though you’ve done all you can do, and you’ve waited and waited for the load to be lifted but to no avail. Those troublesome money matters may take legal action to get settled. However, they will be settled in your favor. And, there’s more good news as the month progresses. You will soon hear some welcome news on two fronts. One being your monetary situation, apart from the legal issues and the other around your own spirituality. You will KNOW that you have grown spiritually and that some important life-lessons have been learned because your life will feel like it’s working now! Good for you.
Taurus
Apr 20 – May 21 It looks like it’s time for you to take a vacation! You’ve been on a pretty rough journey the last few weeks and even though you’ve kept your cool most of the time, enough is enough. Haven’t you noticed yourself getting angry with the wrong person for the wrong reasons? That short-tempered activity has to do with some anger turned inward that occasionally spurts out at other people. It’s time to get away from it all and get a fresh perspective! You’ll find that you will begin to be creative again and pro-active rather than reactive. And, of course, your mood will improve dramatically. So, get away even if it’s just for a weekend!
Gemini
May 21 – Jun 21 Even though your heart has been broken in the past, it’s time to risk again! You’ll be attending a wedding this month or planning one of your own. (maybe just to yourself but that’s the way to make it manifest in reality) It’s also a good month to take advantage of certain opportunities that look like they *might* be financially rewarding. The good news is that they’re more rewarding than you ever thought possible, so go for them! This is not a good time to take that long journey you have been contemplating. Wait until April. Also, this is an excellent month to bring into your awareness some issues that need to be resolved in your consciousness rather than hoping your subconscious will take care of them. It may take some digging, but you know the issues you’ve put on a back burner. Get them off that burner and deal with them!

Capricorn
Jun 21 – Jul 23 There’s movement in the Universe for you right now to start making plans around your family. You’ve got one major decision that will be difficult but after that’s taken care of, you can get on with your life. The Universe will support your decision in this situation and everyone will be satisfied too. (Even though they may give you some dissention beforehand) Someone in your support system could use a hand in February. They’ve been there for you in the past and you certainly have the strength right now to support them. The cards recommend that you spend some time in meditation to draw to you that new job you’ve been wanting! You CAN make it happen, you know.
Jul 23 – Aug 23 This is a month of incredible change for you! Yes, you’ve had “wins” in the past but this month will eclipse all those. And, having said that, you know that sometimes for change to occur, the old ways must be torn down. That part can be painful but as the phoenix arises from the ashes so will your life in this month and to heights you didn’t realize possible. These wins are not necessarily in finances. They are mostly interpersonal like family and friends and lovers. Dreams will come true and you will be celebrating with loved ones who will finally start to see justice happening. And, if that isn’t enough your own creativity and productivity will be at an all-time high!
Sep 23 – Oct 23 You’ve gotten all those nagging doubts out of your head and now you can go ahead and let yourself relax into that wonderful relationship! In fact, you have two relationships that are excellent this month because you’ve let go of the doubts. One is your relationship with your job and the other with that special someone. You were afraid you’d have to walk away from one or both because the “old tapes” kicked in but you’ve conquered them and now you can embrace your Good! You’ve looked long enough and hard enough. Enjoy what you have. In addition, that new money that is coming in ought to be put into investments rather than spent! You’re going to need it later.
Oct 23 – Nov 22 If you don’t let your perfectionism get in the way, this can be a wonderful month for you. You can be happy with that “new” car even if it’s not perfect. You can be happy with your relationship even if it’s not exactly what you had in mind. I strongly suggest you look at why you have a need for everything to be so perfect and then let it go. It’s not that you’re a bad person, it’s that that is what you were taught was RIGHT from childhood. Other people see YOUR imperfections and like you anyway. Do the same for them. I invite you to change that thinking and feeling because there’s so much waiting for you right now! Don’t let yourself be paralyzed by this perfectionism because there is potential here for everything you could want to start to materialize this year starting in March.
Nov 22 – Dec 22 It looks like you’re going to be one busy person this month. I perceive you rushing around achieving all kinds of things! And the clear majority of them will turn out well! Your judgement abilities will be at an alltime high. There is one caution here for this month. I perceive someone who does NOT wish you all the best and you need to outsmart this person, or s/he could do some damage to all your plans. You know who this is. Don’t let the charm fool you. Use that good judgement! You’ll be especially strong in the financial department if you don’t let that person influence you or those around you. All in all, it could be a very productive month for you!
Dec 23 – Jan 20 There is no limit to what you can do this month IF you’re prepared to let the transformation happen and if you can accept it when it does. The way to handle this is to know with every part of you that there is limitless bounty for you in the Universe and you can draw on that any time you like or want! Use your prosperity consciousness to reassure you. Use positive affirmations to calm you. And, be aware that on the earthly plane all enemies have already been vanquished. You may not see that at this moment, but it has already happened in the Universe. Your basic Spirituality is extremely high this month so don’t be surprised at ANYTHING that happens and keep your childlike sense of wonderment!
Aquarius
Jan 20 – Feb 18 You may feel as though you’re under siege at times this month and be tempted to relax in ways that could be dangerous for you. Be very careful of overindulging in anything! Particularly any mind-altering substance. It could be disastrous. You have a great deal of ability to draw from the Universe whatever strength you might need. You can also use that ability to attract to you all the things you’ve been wanting or needing. Your metaphysical talents are particularly heightened in March, so use them not only for your benefit but for those around you. At the end of the month, you will be starting a new project, job or relationship and it may include a major move; perhaps even to another State. For some of you, there will be news of an inheritance, depending on other influences.
Pisces
Feb 18 – Mar 20 There’s a lot of joy in store for you this month! I see a family celebration with a truly happy group. I believe the celebration is for you. You’ve worked hard, and you deserve this. You’ve made sacrifices for your goal and nothing is more fulfilling than having hard work rewarded. However, on another front, there is a feeling of a road you have to walk which is difficult and you’re not sure if there is happiness waiting at the end of the journey. In fact, there’s some despair that everything isn’t going to turn out the way you’d hoped. You haven’t decided to walk away from this situation but you’re very sad about the whole thing. No real decision has been made yet, so just feel the sadness and focus on the joy in the other situation. More will be revealed later.
Virgo
Aug 23 – Sep 23 Your watchword for this month is “new.” New relationships, new money, and new spirituality. You hold the world in your hands and it’s at your feet if you choose to embrace all this “newness.” You just have one more hurdle to jump. Some old ideas will have to go, and a change of consciousness will have to take place to make all this to manifest in reality but you can do it! You’ve done your groundwork well and it’s time to reap what you sowed. Your spirituality will be in the forefront of your consciousness all month as well as that hard-worker that you are enchanted by. S/he will be an outgrowth of your heightened spirituality as will your success on the job.
