Philadelphia apologises for experiments on African-American inmates

Thursday.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney also issued a statement, saying that “the historical impact and trauma of this practice of medical racism has extended for generations”.

“Without excuse, we formally and officially extend a sincere apology to those who were subjected to this inhumane and horrific abuse,” Kenney added.

“We are also sorry it took far too long to hear these words.”

Africa’s petroleum producers back OPEC+ production cut

Lagos, Oct 7 (IANS) The African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO) has announced that it supports the recent decision by the OPEC and some non-OPEC oil-producing countries to cut overall oil production by two million barrels per day.

Washington, Oct 7 (IANS) The US city of Philadelphia issued a formal apology for experiments conducted on African-American inmates at a prison decades ago.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, inmates of Holmesburg Prison were intentionally exposed to pharmaceuticals, viruses, fungus, asbestos, and even dioxin, a component of Agent Orange.

The vast majority of those

subjected to this wide range of experimentation were AfricanAmerican men, many of them illiterate, awaiting prosecution, and attempting to save enough money to make bail, Xinhua news agency reported.

“This is yet another tragic example of disgraceful and unethical practices of medical experimentation on people of colour throughout our country’s history,” the city said on

The experiments were conduct ed by University of Pennsylvania researcher Albert Kligman, a long-standing faculty member in the Department of Dermatology before his death in 2010.

The university’s school of medicine in 2021 apologised “for the pain Kligman’s work caused to incarcerated individuals, their families, and our broader community”.

Somali leaders condemn suicide bomb attacks as death toll hits 15

“Their brutal acts will never distract us from rising against them,” he added and vowed to step up anti-terror operations in the region.

HirShabelle, Health Minister and Deputy Governor for the Hiiraan region, were among those killed in the attack which has also been condemned by the UN.

In his statement, the Prime Minister who chaired an emergency security meeting following the blasts condemned the attacks which he said are aimed at derailing efforts to pacify Somalia.

Omar Farouk Ibrahim, the APPO Secretary General, said on Thursday in a statement reach ing Xinhua that it is “a decision well taken”, as he believes “it is the right thing to do to save the industry and also to ensure that there is stability for today and tomorrow”.

“Every country has a responsi bility to protect the interests of its citizens, and if by reducing production, they see it as serving their best interests, so be it. When developed countries make decisions, they don’t sit and think about how they are going to affect developing countries. The interests of their citizens are paramount,” Ibrahim added.

The statement said the decision by OPEC was made following the

OPEC and non-OPEC ministerial meeting on Wednesday, noting it would reduce overall production by two million barrels per day starting from November, Xinhua news agency reported.

It said the adjustment was being made in light of the uncertainty that surrounds the global economy and oil market outlooks and the need to enhance the long-term guidance for the oil market.

Kenya to receive nearly 1.46 mn foreign tourists in 2022

Mogadishu, Oct 4 (IANS) Somali leaders have condemned the twin suicide bomb blasts in the central Somali town of Beledwyene where at least 15 people were killed and 26 others wounded.

In separate statements on Monday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre directed security agencies to step up anti-terrorism measures to ensure security in the country, Xinhua news agency reported. Mohamud also sent his condolences to the families and relatives of the Somali citizens who lost their lives in the blasts that targeted local officials at Lamagalay base which is HirShabelle regional adminis tration headquarters. He wished the wounded quick recovery and directed the government

to provide immediate medical assistance to those whose health conditions are critical.

The President’s statement came as the death toll rose to 15 in the twin suicide bombs that rocked Beledweyne local administration premises, the interim adminis trative town of Hirshabelle state in central Somalia. The police and witnesses who declined to be named said the death toll could rise as some of the wounded are in critical condition.

“The first explosion was a car laden with explosives driven by a suicide bomber that hit the first security gate of the presidential buildings, followed by another blast loaded on a truck not much far from the residential home of Hirshabelle state Vice-President inside Lamagalaay compound, “Ali Jeyte Osman, Governor of Hiran region told journalists.

“This attack is a proof of how the terrorist groups are still hungry for the bloodshed of the Somali people, and they want to dis courage the people who stood up for their lives. The blood of our precious people that they shed every day will not be spared,” Abdi said.

The latest attacks came barely two days after the killing of senior al-Shabab leader Abdullahi Nadir by government and international partner forces on Saturday during an operation in the Middle Juba region.

The government forces have conducted several operations in Beledweyne in recent days against the al-Shabab terror group, liberating more than 40 villages and killing more than 200 militants.

SKorean, US, Japanese nuclear envoys condemn NKorea’s missile provocation

reported.

The two sides called on the North to immediately cease its provocations and condemned the latest salvo of ballistic missiles as a clear violation of multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions, the ministry said in a statement.

The South Korean envoy held separate phone talks with his Japanese counterpart Takehiro Funakoshi.

N.Korea fires IRBM over Japan: S.Korean military

Seoul, Oct 6 (IANS) Top South Korean, US and Japanese nuclear envoys strongly denounced North Korea’s recent back-toback missile provocations during their phone talks on Thursday.

Kim Gunn, special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, and his

American counterpart, Sung Kim, voiced “serious concerns” over Pyongyang’s test-firing of two short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) earlier in the day. The provocation came two days after the launch of an intermedi ate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) over Japan, Yonhap news agency

The three officials agreed to step up bilateral and trilateral cooperation to respond sternly against the North’s nuclear and missile threats, it added.

Concerns have also been growing that Pyongyang could conduct another nuclear test in the near future.

SKorea, US, Japan hold joint naval drills in East Sea involving Reagan carrier group

destroyer, were mobilised, Yonhap news agency reported quoting the Seoul’s military.

They simulated scenarios of North Korean ballistic missile launches and focused on detecting, tracking and inter cepting them by sharing target information, it said.

Seoul, Oct 4 (IANS) North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) over Japan on Tuesday in its first launch of an IRBM in eight months, according to South Korea’s military.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected the launch from Mupyong-ri in the northern province of Jagang at 7:23 a.m. and that the missile flew some 4,500 kilometres at an apogee of around 970 km at a top speed of Mach 17.

The missile flew past Japan, they said, adding that the intelligence authorities of South Korea and the US are conducting a detailed analysis to verify the specifics of the missile.

Pyongyang last fired an IRBM in January. The Hwasong 12-type missile flew some 800 kilometres at a top altitude of 2,000 km.

In a statement over the launch, the US Indo-Pacific Command called on the North to refrain from further “unlawful and destabilising” acts.

“While we have assessed that this event does not pose a threat to U.S. personnel, or territory, or to our allies, we will continue to monitor the situation,” the command said. “The U.S. commitments to the defense of Japan and the ROK remain ironclad.”

ROK stands for South Korea’s official name, the Republic of Korea.

Given its flight distance, Tuesday’s missile appears to have been fired at a standard angle -in contrast to the North’s earlier launch of an IRBM on a lofted trajectory, observers said.

Seoul, Oct 6 (IANS) South Korea, the United States and Japan staged another joint naval exercise in the East Sea on Thursday with a focus on countering nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.

the committee that due to the prevalence of lumpy skin disease among animals, their import from Afghanistan has been temporarily banned.

“The series of North Korea’s ballistic missile provocations will further strengthen deterrence and the response capabilities of the South Korea-U.S. alliance and only deepen the North’s isolation from the international community,” the JCS conveyed in a correspondence with Yonhap, a South Korean news agency. It also condemned the launch as an act of “significant” prov ocation that undermines peace and stability not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the international community, and a “clear” breach of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

The IRBM puts the US territory of Guam within range in a reminder that it poses threats far beyond the peninsula.

The North launched one shortrange ballistic missile (SRBM) on September 25, then two last Wednesday, another two the following day and two on Saturday.

S.Korean Prez Yoon’s approval rating drops after hot mic incident

The exercise involving the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier strike group opened in Seoul, Oct 3 (IANS) South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s approval rating fell for the first time in four weeks after his remarks caught on a hot mic in

New York caused an uproar here, a survey showed on Monday.

In the poll of 2,522 voters conducted by Realmeter from Monday to Friday last week, 31.2 per cent positively assessed Yoon’s job performance, down 3.4 percentage points from the previous week, Yonhap news agency reported.

Yoon’s disapproval rating was 66 per cent, up 3.8 percentage points.

The drop could be attributable to the hot mic controversy and Yoon’s accusation of media ma nipulation after he came under fire for using vulgar words in private remarks to aides caught

on a hot mic during his trip to New York last month, according to Bae Cheol-ho, a senior analyst at Realmeter.

Though the recording of Yoon’s remarks was not clear due to noise, many thought that he used foul language while talking about US Congress and US President Joe Biden. Yoon’s office rejected the claim, saying he was referring to South Korea’s opposition-controlled National Assembly and did not mention US Congress or Biden.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points at a 95 per cent confidence level.

Soon after the launch, JCS Chairman Gen. Kim Seung-kyum and Gen. Paul LaCamera, the commander of the South KoreaUS Combined Forces Command, had virtual consultations and reaffirmed that they would solidify the allies’ combined defense posture against “any North Korean threats and provocations,” according to the JCS.

The allies have recently ramped up their rhetoric against Pyongyang and held a naval exercise involving the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier. They also resumed the Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group (EDSCG) session last month after a nearly five-year hiatus.

Analysts said the North’s recent provocations indicate it has been doubling on its major weapons development schemes, including developing a tactical nuclear warhead mountable on shortrange ballistic missiles.

Chinese aircraft intruded into S.Korea’s air defense zone more than 70 times in 2021

Seoul, Oct Oct 3 (IANS) Dozens of Chinese and Russian warplanes entered South Korea’s air defense identification zone (KADIZ) last year, a document showed Monday.

In a document submitted to the National Assembly, South Korea’s defense ministry said that the number of times Chinese mili tary aircraft entered the KADIZ surpassed 70 last year, similar to that of the previous year.

The number of entries by Russian aircraft into KADIZ has exceeded 10 times since 2017, while topping 20 times in 2019.

Japanese warplanes entered the overlapping South Korean and Japanese air defense zones an average of 500 times per year after giving prior notice, according to the document. The air defense zone was first drawn in 1951 by the U.S. Air Force during the 1950-53 Korean War to prevent air clashes between nations surrounding the Korean Peninsula. The area is not territorial airspace but is zoned off to request foreign planes identify themselves to prevent accidental clashes.

Lahore, Oct 4 (IANS) Pakistan’s Prime Pinister, Shehbaz Sharif, has accused the former premier Imran Khan of being the “the biggest liar on the face of the earth” and injecting poison into society to “dangerously polarise the electorate” after he was toppled from power earlier this year, The Guardian reported.

Speaking in his first interview from Pakistan since he took over as Prime Minister in April, Sharif, 70, spoke unsparingly of the “damage” that Khan, the former cricket superstar who ruled Pakistan from 2018, had

done to the country in both domestic and foreign affairs.

Sharif, who is the younger brother of the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and part of one of Pakistan’s most powerful political dynasties, called Khan “a liar and a cheat” whose policies had left the economy in ruins, The Guardian reported.

He accused Khan, who ran on an anti-corruption manifesto, of conducting the country’s affairs to suit his own personal agenda “in a manner which can be only described as the most

inexperienced, self-centred, egotistical, immature politician in the history of this country.”

Sharif said the leaked audios were “an irrefutable endorse ment that he [Khan] is the biggest liar on the face of the earth. I’m not saying this with a sense of glee but a sense of embarrassment and concern.

My country’s image has been been damaged hugely by these lies told out of mean personal interest.”

Sharif, who has always worked with the military establishment, acknowledged that he faced significant challenges ruling Pakistan while Khan was mobil ising on the streets. Several of the economic decisions made by Sharif’s government, such as raising fuel taxes, have proved very unpopular.

“Never before was I concerned about our country’s future,” said Sharif. “Imran Khan has injected infinite amount of poison in this society and made it hugely polarised as never before...he is distorting facts and creating hate,” The Guardian reported.

Sri Lanka keeps interest rates unchanged

Colombo, Oct 6 (IANS) Sri Lanka’s central bank decided to maintain the Standing Deposit Facility Rate (SDFR) and the Standing Lending Facility Rate (SLFR) at their current levels of 14.50 per cent and 15.50 per cent, respectively.

The central bank announced on Thursday that it arrived at this decision after considering the latest macroeconomic condi tions, expected developments, and macroeconomic projections, Xinhua news agency reported.

It said it noted the present tight monetary conditions, the reducing pace of inflation, and both domestic and global factors have helped the country stabilise.

The current fiscal policies are complementing the monetary policy and are helping to mitigate any build-up of aggregate demand pressures, it said.

The central bank expects the country’s headline inflation to drop to 4 to 6 percent over the medium term.

French energy sobriety plan to switch off Paris monuments at night

of Paris Anne Hidalgo, during a presentation of the “energy sobriety plan” of Paris.

“It is important to show that everywhere, including this monument... which we symboli cally light up in green when there are important moments for the climate, will also participate.”

An earlier switch-off time for the lights on the “Iron Lady”, built by engineer Gustave Eiffel 133 years ago, will lead to energy savings of 4 per cent, Hidalgo added.

Tower, the city’s museums, and the city halls for Paris’ boroughs (arrondissements).

According to the city of Paris, this will save nearly 10 million euros ($9 million).

The goal of the “energy sobriety plan” of Paris is to reduce the city’s consumption by 10 per cent, the equivalent of the energy consumption of 226 schools, Hidalgo explained.

buildings such as the Pharo, the Major, the Longchamp Palace and the Opera will be switched off earlier from the end of the month.

The city of Lille (Hauts-deFrance) has already implemented such measures. According to a statement from the city hall, they represent annual savings of around 170,000 kWh of energy consumption.

anywhere else in France. Shopkeepers are stepping up against this decision.

In Paris, the famous Christmas illuminations on the ChampsElysees will also be significantly reduced.

Paris, Sep 24 (IANS) The lights on the Eiffel Tower will be switched off at 11.45 p.m. from this week onwards, in a bid to save electricity due to the energy crisis.

Other major monuments in the French capital, such as the Paris City Hall, the Saint-Jacques Tower and the city’s museums will no longer be lit from 10 p.m., reports Xinhua news agency.

“The City of Light will remain the City of Light,” emphasized mayor

According to the Eiffel Tower’s operating company, the annual night-time energy consumption of the “Iron Lady” amounts to 6.7 gigawatt hours, or about the equivalent of the energy consumption of a town of 3,000 people.

The monument attracts six million visitors per year.

Meanwhile, the ornamental lighting on the facades and monuments of the capital will be switched off at 10 p.m. from this Friday.

This includes the City Hall, which is usually illuminated until 1 a.m., the Saint-Jacques

She also called on the state to take similar action for national monuments, and for the owners of private monuments to take steps in the same direction.

Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak announced on September 17 that the Louvre pyramid and the facade of the Palace of Versailles would be switched off earlier to save energy.

However, she said that although symbolic measures were important to raise awareness, they are not enough.

Other major French cities are also committed to energy sobriety.

Budapest needs to inform the EC by November 19 about the implementation of the promised changes.

In Strasbourg, where the famous Christmas market attracts over two million visitors each year, the city hall faces the challenge of ensuring energy sobriety while preserving the spirit of the event.

“We are working on the whole project, so that it is coherent. We are thinking about illuminations but also about the 300 chalets which consume a lot of energy,” deputy mayor of Strasbourg Guillaume Lisbsig told the regional press.

Due to a decree on March 31, heating the outdoors of bars and restaurants and all outdoor public spaces will no longer be allowed at the Strasbourg Christmas market this year, or

The committee which organizes the festivities on “the most beautiful avenue in the world” said that it wanted to “signifi cantly” reduce the Christmas illuminations and the lighting of windows.

“The Champs-Elysees ought to participate collectively and in solidarity with the efforts asked of the French,” the committee said.

“This must not compromise the cultural, tourist, commercial, economic outreach of the Champs-Elysees or the aesthetic and playful quality of walks on the avenue during festive periods.”

France, like many other European countries, is facing an energy crisis this winter.

Polish FM signs diplomatic note to Germany on WWII reparations

Warsaw, Oct 4 (IANS) Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau has signed a diplomatic note outlining his country’s demands for reparations from Germany for the damage caused during World War Two.

Budapest, Oct 4 (IANS) The Hungarian parliament adopted the first batch of two laws in order to gain access to billions of EU funds blocked over rule of law concerns.

The first one, passed by a large majority, enables citizens to turn directly to a court if they think that the prosecutor’s office is not willing to initiate a probe for corruption.

The second strengthens the transparency of the legislative process by demanding public dialogue and consultation being conducted before the adoption of a law.

Another law on setting up an “independent authority” to oversee the use of EU funds is scheduled to be adopted on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported.

So far, the Hungarian govern ment has made 17 promises in order to unblock EU funds allocated to Hungary.

If Budapest gives adequate answers to the EC in November, the Hungarian government would also have a shot to get the green light from the EC on 5.8 billion euros ($5.7 billion) of the Recovery and Resilience Facility funds.

Stampede at football match in Indonesia, death toll reaches 174

of Indonesian football”.

Violence at football matches is not new in Indonesia, and Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya are long-time rivals.

Persebaya Surabaya fans were banned from buying tickets for the game because of fears of clashes.

Indonesia launches fact-finding team to probe deadly football stampede

Jakarta, Oct 2 (IANS) At least 174 people have died and 180 others are injured in a stampede at a football match in Indonesia’s Malang in East Java province, Indonesian Police said on Sunday.

The incident took place after police tear-gassed supporters who invaded the pitch late on Saturday evening, BBC reported.

It is one of the world’s worst stadium disasters after local team Arema FC lost 2-3 to bitter rivals Persebaya Surabaya in East Java.

The country’s Chief Security Minister said that spectators exceeded the stadium’s 38,000 capacity by around 4,000, BBC reported.

President Joko Widodo has ordered that all matches in Indonesia’s top league must be stopped until an investigation is done.

Videos show fans running on to the pitch after the final whistle.

Police then fired tear gas, leading to a crowd stampede and cases of suffocation, said

Nico Afinta, Police Chief in East Java.

“It had gotten anarchic. They started attacking officers, they damaged cars,” he said, adding that two police officers were among the deceased.

“We would like to convey that not all of them were anarchic. Only about 3,000 who entered the pitch,” he said.

Fleeing fans “went out to one point at the exit. Then there was a build-up, in the process of accumulation, there was shortness of breath, lack of oxygen”, he added.

Videos on social media show fans clambering over fences to escape. Separate videos appear to show lifeless bodies on the floor.

FIFA, the world’s governing football body, states that no “crowd control gas” should be carried or used by stewards or police at matches.

The Indonesian football associ ation (PSSI) said it had launched an investigation, adding that the incident had “tarnished the face

But Chief Security Minister Mahfud MD posted on Instagram that 42,000 tickets had been sold for the match at the Kanjuruhan stadium.

President Widodo called for this to be the “last soccer tragedy in the nation” after ordering that all Liga 1 games should be paused pending an investigation.

The stampede is the latest in a long line of disasters at stadiums.

In 1964, a total of 320 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured during a stampede at a Peru-Argentina Olympic qualifier in Lima.

In 1985, 39 people died and 600 were hurt at the Heysel stadium in Brussels, Belgium, when fans were crushed against a wall that then collapsed during the European Cup final between Liverpool (England) and Juventus (Italy).

In the UK, a crush developed at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield, resulting in the deaths of 97 Liverpool fans attending the club’s FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

Jakarta, Oct 4 (IANS) Indonesian authorities have formed an independent fact-finding team to investigate Saturday’s deadly stampede that occurred after a football match in East Java province, Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said Monday.

The minister, who leads the fact-finding team, told a virtual press conference that the team was assigned directly by President Joko Widodo to find out the causes of the stampede which killed 125 people and injured at least 320 others, and who would be responsible for the incident.

“This team will work for a maximum of one month ahead.

All results and recommenda tions will be directly reported to the president,” Mahfud said.

The team members consisted of officials from relevant ministries and government institutions, professional football organisa tions, observers, academics and mass media, he said.

Besides establishing the team,

Widodo had also instructed the country’s police and military institutions to respectively probe their officers and soldiers who were allegedly involved in causing the stampede, Mahfud said.

According to local reports, the Indonesian Police have been under fire by the public as many believe that the stampede happened after the police fired tear gas at the crowds, sparking panic among spectators and a stampede at one of the stadi um’s exits.

“In three days, the National Police must impose disciplinary measures towards its regional structural officers assigned in the area where the incident occurred. The police must also immediately name suspects of all possible perpetrators,” Mahfud said.

“Meanwhile, the Indonesian military must impose sanctions and probe all of its soldiers who are proven to have done unnec essary measures that triggered the stampede,” he added.

Island nation Vanuatu calls for treaty to end fossil fuel era

Global Citizen Festival in Central Park.

In his speech, Vurobaravu said: “Every day we are experiencing more debilitating conse quences of the climate crisis.

New York, Sep 24 (IANS) The Pacific island nation of Vanuatu has called on other nations to join them in establishing a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, a proposed international mech anism that aims to explicitly address the source of 86 per cent of CO2 emissions that cause climate change: fossil fuels.

Vanuatu President Nikenike Vurobaravu on Friday made the historic call on the floor of the UN General Assembly, making Vanuatu the first nation-state to call for an international mech anism to stop the expansion of all new fossil fuel projects, and manage a global just transition away from coal, oil and gas.

The President will also launch their call for a treaty to phase out fossil fuels on stage at the 2022

Fundamental human rights are being violated, and we are measuring climate change not in degrees of Celsius or tons of carbon, but in human lives. This emergency is of our own making. Our youth are terrified of the future world we are handing to them through expanding fossil fuel dependency, compromising intergenerational trust and equity.

“We call for the development of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to phase down coal, oil and gas production in line with 1.5 degrees Celsius, and enable a global just transition for every worker, community and nation with fossil fuel dependence.”

The call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty has already been endorsed by more than 65 cities and sub-na tional governments around the globe, including London, Lima, Los Angeles, Kolkata, Paris and the Hawaii State Legislature.

Recently the proposal has also been supported by the Vatican and the World Health Organization.

Significant momentum has built behind the proposal in recent

months and Vanuatu’s call for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is a pivotal step towards building formal diplomatic support for the proposal. Similar moments were pivotal in the legal pathway towards treaties to manage the threats of nuclear weapons and landmines. This historic call doubles down on Vanuatu’s commitment to climate action, following their submission earlier this month of one of the world’s most comprehensive climate targets under the UN.

Vanuatu has also been leading a campaign to have the International Court of Justice issue an opinion on climate justice and human rights, which paves the way for a new era of international climate policy focused on equity and justice and addressing the biggest drivers of the climate crisis -- coal, oil, and gas.

Vanuatu, an already carbon-neg ative country that absorbs more emissions than it produces, is rated the country most at risk of natural disasters, according to the UN.

Countries on the frontlines of this crisis have been calling for urgent, tangible action on climate as they face the impacts of climate change and sea level rise in real time.

He said in 2020, this deadly disease caused Cambodia’s economy to decline into the negative territory by 3.1 percent, which was the first negative growth over the last two decades.

In response, in addition to health measures, Hun Sen said the government launched the National Vaccination Campaign and built a strong herd immuni ty throughout the country.

“This achievement has allowed Cambodia to reopen the country fully and safely in all fields since Nov. 1, 2021, until today, and has made Cambodia’s economy recover gradually with resilience

and strength,” he said.

“As a result, Cambodia’s economy grew at a positive rate of 3 percent in 2021 ... and will likely continue to grow around 5 percent and 6 percent in 2022 and 2023, respectively,” he added.

Hun Sen said that to sustain the economy in the long run, the government will further invest in the fields of healthcare, social protection, human resource development, small and medium enterprises, digital technology, and green development, among others.

He gave the assurance that Amini’s death is being inves tigated “carefully, justly and seriously”.

The Iranian Minister noted that Iran, with a firm and practical belief in democracy, has always paid due attention to its people’s peaceful demands, but “some foreign powers, organised elements and terrorists” have caused the peaceful protests to deviate from their right course and shift toward violence, riots

Turning to bilateral relations, Amir-Abdollahian said the two countries agreed on a new roadmap for developing ties during his recent trip to Rome, Xinhua news agency reported.

For his part, the Italian Minister said Rome attaches importance to its ties with Tehran, expressing strong support for Iran’s efforts to reach a lasting agreement on the revival of the nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Michael Clarke blasts Australia selectors for picking Green ahead of Smith in game v West Indies

“This will be my last World Cup - for sure. The decision has been made,” he told Argentine journalist Sebastian Vignolo.

Messi led Argentina to Copa America Trophy in 2021 after 28 years and the South American giants are one of the favourites to win the Qatar World Cup.

The 35-year-old said that Argentina are always considered a candidate to win the trophy as they have a rich history.

“I don’t know if we are the favourite candidates, but Argentina is always a candidate because of history, because of what it means,” he said.

Four of those came in 2014 when the PSG star led Argentina to the final where they were beaten 1-0 by Germany after extra-time.

He may have missed out on winning silverware with his country then, but he finally got his hands on an international

trophy when he lifted the Copa America last year in Brazil. Messi’s record for Argentina stands at 90 goals in 164 games, making him the third-highest goalscorer ever in men’s international football behind Cristiano Ronaldo (117) and Iran’s Ali Daei (109).

Messi announced his retirement from international football in 2016 after losing in the Copa America final against Chile, but he quickly reversed his decision and has remained the captain of the team ever since.

The PSG forward has been in great form this year with both club and country. Argentina are currently enjoying a 35-game unbeaten streak which started way back in 2019.

Sydney, Oct 7 (IANS) Former Australia skipper Michael Clarke has flayed his country’s selectors for including young allrounder Cameron Green, who is not in the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, in the opening match of the two-match T20I series against the West Indies, while Steve Smith -- who is in the World Cup squad -- was not included in the playing XI. Australia won the opening match against the Caribbean side by three wickets in Gold Coast on Thursday with Green scoring just 14 as opener.

Clarke, a member of the ODI World Cup-winning side in 2007 who later led Australia’s victorious campaign at the 2015 event at home, indicated Cricket Australia’s (CA) selection was going awry ahead of the T20 World Cup at home.

In addition to Smith being dropped, skipper Aaron Finch,

who opens the batting, came in to bat at No.4. However, Finch later revealed following his fine half-century in a winning cause that it was his decision to drop down the order so Green could bat at the top.

Green recently caught the eye following two half centuries in the three-match T20I series in India.

The game against West Indies also saw Mitchell Marsh return to the setup only as a batter.

Marcus Stoinis will return for the three-match T20I series against England in Perth from October 9.

“My theory is this, Mitch Marsh wasn’t bowling so they had to pick Cameron Green over Steve Smith to give us an extra bowling option but what they’re (selectors) doing is shooting themselves in the foot at the moment,” Clarke was quoted as saying on the Big Sports Breakfast.

“The most important thing right now is we prepare for this World Cup... so Steve Smith’s form in Twenty20 cricket over the last couple of years hasn’t been as good as he would like. He’s got to play. He’s got to play and he’s got to own his role, is he going to bat 4, is he going to bat 3? You’ve got to let him play, so even it if it means you play one bowler short in these games, I still think you’ve got to allow your players to play,” added Clarke. Clarke added Australia need to back every single player in the World Cup squad. “I think they’re preparing for both scenarios. If Marcus Stoinis is fit, he’s in the World Cup squad ... If Stoinis is fit then Cameron Green can’t come into the squad, so that’s their plan A,” he said. “If Stoinis is not fit then Cameron Green will come into the squad, so they’re trying to have their cake and eat it -- OK while’s Stoinis isn’t playing get Cameron Green some cricket and bring him in but what they’re doing is burning Smithy (Steve Smith) by doing that because he’s not getting any cricket,” opined Clarke.

“(It looks as if) if Cameron Green is in the squad he will be in the starting XI. That tells me they’ve made a mistake,” he said. “They should have picked him in the squad. Again, with Mitch Marsh they want him to bat at number 3, so Smith is going to be the one to bat at number 4, let him play these games, let him play every game so he goes into the World Cup at his best. He will find a way to make runs, he’s too good a player in any format, especially at a World Cup,” added Clarke.

‘High-profile’ England cricketer facing racism charge: Report

London, Oct 6 (IANS) Racism in England cricket reared its head with another old case coming to light now of a high-profile England star calling his county teammate “P***” multiple times between 2014-16, prompting England and Wales Cricket Board to start an investigation into the matter, a media report said.

According to a report in the Daily Mail newspaper, the claims have been reported to the ECB and the report states their investi gation ‘started in the last three weeks and they are contacting witnesses’.

The player is alleged to have been ‘reprimanded by a wellknown senior player’ after using the slur during a game of football in training, the report claimed.

An ECB spokesman told the media: “We do not comment on who is or isn’t the subject of ECB investigations in situations such as this.”

The report did not name the ‘high-profile’ player nor the

victim of his racist behaviour. The latest allegations once again prove that the allegations made by Azeem Rafiq about the racist abuse he suffered during his time at Yorkshire were not related to one club or group of people and the problem is more deep-rooted.

The ECB have since Rafiq’s allegations charged a number of individuals over their involvement in the scandal and a Cricket Discipline Commission hearing is set to begin later this month. An investigation into allegations of racism at Essex remains ongoing, with three former players reporting they had been victims of racist abuse during their time at Chelmsford, said a report in mirror.co.uk.

Jahid Ahmed described Essex as “a white man’s world where brown people were outsiders”, while Maurice Chambers told the Cricketer that a fellow player had called him a “f***ing monkey” during his time at the club.
