Launch of Prof. Sarva Daman Singh’s Understanding Gandhi – A Mahatma in the Making latest book: 1869 – 1914
P
rof. Sarva Daman Singh is an eminent historian with a special interest in Indian affairs. With doctorates in history from the Universities of London and Queensland, Prof. Singh made Australia his home in 1974. He has taught at universities in India and Queensland; and held chairs of Indian History, Culture and Archaeology. He also served as the Honorary Consul of India in Queensland from 2003 till 2011. A prolific writer, his other works include Ancient Indian Warfare with Special Reference to the Vedic Period, Polyandry in Ancient India and Indians Abroad.
Spread over 565 pages, this volume provides a unique insight into Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s early years. Beginning with his academic pursuits in England, the book catalogues his struggle against apartheid in South Africa. It examines his forays with Imperial subjugation and the tenets that led to the development of his doctrine of non-violence and self-sacrifice – a doctrine that ultimately led to India’s independence. All proceeds from the launch event on 22nd September at The Institute of Asian Studies was donated to charity. The book is now available on Amazon.

one marrow donor drive - Hope 4 Sujith was organized by Malayalee Association of Queensland and supported by Simply Human Inc - Superheroes Without Capes. It was conducted on 22nd September 2018 at Annerley. Mrs. Sudha Nair from MAQ had taken the lead and been at the forefront in all the donor drives since past couple of years; alongside Founder & President of Simply Human Inc. Ms. Prerna Pahwa. This drive is a ray for hope for many people like Sujith and his family in Brisbane. Sujith is an IT engineer before he was tested for Philadelphia chromosomepositive acute lymphoblastic leu-
kemia three years ago. It is a type of cancer that happens to very few people. Since then Sujith has had six rounds of chemotherapy. A solution to his ordeal is bone marrow replacement. However, finding a donor for Sujith is like finding a needle in a stack of straws. One problem is that the people of Indian origin register very little for the bone marrow donation. Anju, wife of Sujith says "People do not even know about the process of bone marrow donation. Less people register for that reason, if a donor is found for Sujith, then they don’t have to give their bone marrow. This process is called peripheral blood stem cell donation." MAQ is
the first community organization to mandate Bone Marrow Donor drives; they certainly have set an example for others to follow. SIMPLY HUMAN Inc raises awareness of Leukemia, bone marrow transplant procedure and stem cell storage through their online presence inclusive of social media and other platforms to educate others so that they can take well informed decision of become a registered donor. For organizing informative sessions regarding bone marrow donor drive, bone marrow transplant procedure and stem cord preservation; please feel free to contact Simply Human Inc. on info@SimplyHuman.org.au | Web - www.SimplyHuman.org.au | Follow them on Facebook & Twitter.

Bengali Society of Queensland Drought Appeal 2018
O
n Sunday, 16th September 2018, a fantastic community effort marked the Bengali Society of Queensland’s 20 years of existence and history has been made at the Queen Street Mall Centre Stage when the young and adults, novice and professionals took to the stage for a great cause. As we are all aware of the severe drought conditions in Queensland; our aim was to provide some assistance to our farmer friends and what could be the best way to raise funds – a cultural showcase in the heart of the city. Our nominated charity has been Drought Angels based in Chinchilla who provide the struggling farmers with all kinds of assistance ranging from food, clothing, feedstock etc. With only 3 staff and over 50 volunteers, they are working hard to assist our farmers through such difficult times. Due to such a short notice, we couldn’t have a representative come and attend our program, but they are very appreciative of our initiative.
Vande Mataram on violin kickstarted our gala fundraising event followed by a chorus song “We Shall Over Come” which laid the foundation of our campaign. The next 3.5hrs just flowed through flawlessly, thanks to MC Tapas Mandal and MC Sarbani Dhur as different performances kept the audience engaged. Our final number was “I Still Call Australia Home” sung by Anita Parakh-Morgan, the Soprano from Queensland Opera and what a feeling – the whole city mall reverberated with her powerful voice and definitely an excellent way to end our stage event. Our member kids performed and sang on stage, some danced and some played instruments. Music involved Indian Bollywood, Bengali, Bhangra and offcourse our great Aussie popular numbers. Our young performers who made us very proud included Arushi & Anusha Bhattacharya, Arundhuti Mukherjee, Kriti Mukherjee, Lakshanya Govarthanan, Paean Sarkar, Mohini Sarkar, Rishav
Panda, Trisha Das, Yanna Das, Shilpi Chattopadhyay, Nilanjana Dasgupta, Inika Bose, Sarbani Maitra and Deeptangsu Maitra. Amongst our very talented adult performers were Jutish Das, Raviskesh Singh, Aswin Narayanan, Binny Jaradi, Yashwant Saboor, Madan Panda and Anita Parakh-Morgan. Our group performances included D4Dance Australia, Dance Galatta and Rich Virsa – all compelled the audience to move to their grooves and goes without saying, set the stage on fire! Needless to say, others who were not on stage, were busy in collections and our kids have played a pivotal role in in aspect – we collected a whopping $1,050 in cash & coins from the public. Our total tally now sits at $6,750 which has been donated to the Drought Angels to support our struggling farmers. Felicitations to Mr. Amit Basu, President BSQ and his team and all BSQ members who have supported the event!

N
avratri, meaning 'nine nights', is one of the most popular and widely celebrated Hindu festivals in many parts of India. Folk singers Umesh Barot, Dharmesh Barot, Ahmed Khawra, Sajid Khawra and Team were invited to perform where in the songs begin slow and gradually speed up, sending the dancers into a trance. The event was attended not only by the Gujarati Community but also had Indians from other states as well as Queenslanders. Kashmiri Pandits Australia (KPA) observe Martyrs Day – submit memorandum to High Commissioner of India in Australia and seek justice for the community
T
o observe the Balidan Divas / Martyr’s Day on 14th September, Kashmiri Pandits Australia (KPA) paid homage to hundreds of martyrs of community members. 14th Sep is commemorated as Martyr’s Day or Balidan Divas. As a mark of respect and commemoration for all the martyrs of religious extermination and genocide, Kashmiri Pandits Australia - in Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra - all came together and submitted the same memorandum to Consulate offices - High Commissioner of India, HE Mr. A.M. Gondane (in Canberra) and consular officers in different cities. This was an extension of what has been done by the community representatives of team Global KP Diaspora (GKPD), across the world, USA, Finland, Germany, UK, Singapore, New Zealand, Africa and India. There was a high decibel - moral, emotional and verbal - support from all the major cities of the world and this was showcased by the support which our petition got Petition of Kashmiri Pandits to Indian PM Narendra Modi. In a span of 10 days, the petition managed to collect close to 14000 signatures, from 50 plus countries. To put it into perspective, the aboriginals of Kashmir, Kashmiri Pandits (Kashmiri Hindus or locally known as Battas), 14th September is observed as Martyrs' Day since 1990, in memory of Mr. Tikka Lal Taploo, one of the community’s icons, who was assassinated by terrorists in Kashmir (in the state of Jammu And Kashmir, India) in 1989. This was followed by largescale and selective killings, rape and torture of the community. Nearly 1500 men, women and children were tortured and filled by inhuman ways, and was used to scare the minority community (which was Battas) and because they represented the idea of India in Kashmir and were the emblems of nationhood. The terrorists and radicals, with support from most of the local majority population, tried violence and scare tactics to frighten the community and create an environment to push them to the wall and throw them out of Kashmir. Kashmiri Pandits have a history and connection with their homeland and they had to leave all of that – ancestral properties, land, religious places, spiritual, cultural and social relics, and their way of life, and have since been living as refugees in their own country.
www.indiannewsqld.com.au
Some of the slogans which Kashmiri Pandits had to hear through were: • “Ralive, Tschalivie ya Galive” (Convert, Leave or Perish) • “Yahan kya chalega, Nizam-eMustafa” (We want to be ruled under Shari’ah) • And the WORST of them all “Kashir banawon Pakistan, Battaw varaie, Battaneiw saan” (We will turn Kashmir into Pakistan alongwith Kashmiri Pandit women, but without their men folk). And these slogans were communicated using various methods – by shouting in the mass protests on streets, through loud speakers of mosques, private talks within the neighbours, newspaper advertisements, notices on Pandit homes and selective killings. With that happening in the backdrop, on the fateful morning of 19th Jan 1990, nearly 700000 Kashmiri Pandits left their homeland in the dead of the night, to safer places like Jammu, Udhampur, New Delhi and other Indian cities, with the assumption that they will return after some weeks when the situation has been got under control by the government. But alas, it has been 28 years and counting, and our homeland has gone form bad to worse, with radicalism penetrating through the society. On 14th Sep, this year, Kashmiri Pandits Australia (KPA) representatives came together and paid homage to the martyrs. They submitted a memorandum to High Commissioner of India, HE Mr. A.M. Gondane, in Canberra, as well as to Honorary Consul in Brisbane, Mrs. Archana Singh and in the consular office in Melbourne, and were given a patient hearing and assurance to pass on our memorandum to higher offices of Prime Minister of India. New Delhi and adjoining cities, which has the highest concentration of the displaced Kashmiri Pandits, saw the community offering their homage to soldiers and civilians, who sacrificed their lives in Kashmir while fighting the terrorism. Hundreds of Kashmiri Pandits came together at Shaheed BK Ganjoo Park at Kalibari Marg and offered floral tributes to the brave souls. Bhajans were recited and tributes were paid to the martyrs. In New Delhi, a delegation of Kashmiri Pandits also submitted the same memorandum to Mr. Hansraj Ahir, Union Minister of Home (MoS), and addressed to the Prime Minister of India, requesting him
for justice to victims of terrorism. Our memorandum focused on the fact that Kashmiri Pandits must be recognized as a bonafide, standalone party in the Kashmir conflict based on our indigenous heritage and the Genocide perpetrated. Government of India was requested to formally engage with the community representatives so that confidence building steps can be initiated which could lead to: 1. Recognition of the exodus and ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Pandits as Genocide 2. Making available to the Displaced Kashmiri Pandits all benefits, relief and socio economic, civil and political rights as laid down in the international covenants of internally displaced persons uprooted from their Homeland due to religious and sectarian violence. Upgradation of the pro-
posed State Temple and Shrine bill based on community guidance would be a good step in this direction 3. Accord recognition to the displaced Kashmiri Pandit community as a legitimate stakeholder in the final solution to the current imbroglio. Kashmiri Pandits sought an institutional, inter-ministerial mechanism to coordinate with the Kashmiri Pandit representatives for the effective implementation of the abovementioned demands and to deal with any other exigencies or contingent situations. Consideration for setting up of: 1. Constitutional arrangements for the return and rehabilitation of all seven hundred thousand Displaced Kashmiri Pandits in a separate, single, concentrated Homeland carved out in the Valley of Kashmir.
2. The Constitution of India along with all associated laws and provisions be allowed to flow freely in the newly created geo-political territory without the shackles of Article 370 or Article 35A. 3. How Should We Care For Our Elderly? “I had been feeling increasingly uneasy about my elderly mother who lives alone in her home. ” I phone and visit regularly but her mobility had gradually been deteriorating and I was worried about her safety. Then it happened – a fall, which left her badly shaken and bruised. I realized that had I not visited her later that morning and found her, she would have been left on the ground distressed and in pain for hours, unable to get up or summon help. I had previously tried to talk her into wearing a personal safety alarm pendant that triggers a call to a care team in the event of a fall, but she refused to even consider it. She said she was fine and that she is always careful! After the fall she realized how vulnerable she was and changed her mind. She asked me to ring TAUS Care and I purchased their Connected Care pendant – which I might add, is now always around her neck – even in the shower - its waterproof!. For $5 a day we now both have peace of mind that should she fall again, assistance is immediately at hand.” “Safety for our Frail Elderly,” was the topic for discussion at a luncheon held by a group of Indian ladies who meet monthly at each other’s homes. Started over 40 years ago by Shobha Rawal, these meetings enable the ladies to catch up with each other to share news; delicious food; and enjoy good company. My name is Lorraine Angeli and it was my privilege to accompany Prabha Sriram, Director of Tradern Australia Care and Training Services: (TAUS Care) to their September lunch. I am the Operations Manager for TAUS Care and Mrs. Sriram asked me to join her in a conversation with the ladies about safety protection for our frail and vulnerable loved ones. What a delight it was for me to meet this wonderful group. Coming from a multicultural background myself I felt right at home with this dazzling array of beautiful women in their colorful saris. At the lunch I shared with them the story of my mother and her fall and the importance of acquiring a TAUS Care personal safety alarm service for her. I explained that during my 30+ years experience in the Australian aged and disability care sector, I often saw people who were elderly, at risk of falls. People feel very safe in their own homes and often don’t see how frail they have become. We, as care providers, see the deterioration in their mobility, but it is not until they have a fall, or a near miss, that they realize how vulnerable they are. When a fall does happen - the consequences can be devastating. I am lucky that my mother only experienced bruising and shock after her fall. I have seen other elderly suffer broken
www.indiannewsqld.com.au
hips, legs, arms – even concussion, after their falls. Once in hospital many do not recover sufficiently to return home. A sad consequence for them and their families. The general public is not aware of the seriousness of falls, particularly for the elderly. Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injury in Queenslanders aged 65 years and over, with older people at greatest risk of sustaining an injury from a fall. At least one in four older people have a fall each year; over 40% have multiple falls and over 30% of those who fall, require medical attention. (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality and Health Care: safetyandquality.gov.au). To state some figures: In 2012-2013 about 100,000 people aged 65 and older were hospitalized due to a fall. While hip fractures accounted for 74% of fall injuries; injuries to the head (22%) were also common. (Australian Government: Australian Institute of Health and Welfare: aihw.gov.au). Tradern Australia Care and Training Services is not only a domiciliary Aged and NDIS Service Provider, they are also in partnership with Australia’s leading Healthcare provider Tunstall which provides a range of 24/7 personal and medical safety alarm systems, to suit the individual needs of people. For many families, knowing that there is a personal safety alarm system for their elderly parents, that
can immediately provide 2-way communication access to a care team at any time; or have an ambulance called in an emergency, is a great reassurance. TAUS Care in partnership with Tunstall also provide a range of other technology integrated services such as the “Find Me Watch” – a cellular personal emergency response system, panic alert, GPS tracker and fall detector all in one unobtrusive watch device. Their ICP Connected Health Solution provides remote monitoring of a person’s vital signs and health condition from their own home. This technology has proven to enhance the quality of life and clinical outcomes for people with long-term chronic conditions such as congestive health failure; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; cardio vascular disease; asthma; diabetes; hypertension; cystic fibrosis; inhome dialysis etc. Tradern Australia Care and Training Services has seen the immense benefit such technologies can offer in not only helping people understand and better manage their health, but also contributing to a reduction in hospital visits – because their conditions are being well monitored at home. The Tradern Australia Care PARTNERSHIP with Tunstall means that people and their families can contact TAUS CARE for information, purchase, support and personal assistance with installation, to those choosing this ‘safety net’
of care for their loved ones. As a user of a personal alarm pendant device my mother now has greater confidence knowing that should an emergency occur, she has immediate access to assistance.
TAUS Care welcomes inquiries about their extensive range of culturally sensitive in-home Aged and Disability Care Services and the Tunstall Healthcare Personal Safety Systems.

Indian man admits to Ganesh 'visarjan': murdering new wife in VIC How it impacts AN INDIAN man has pleaded guilty to the India's ecology stabbing murder of his new wife at her Melbourne home just months after their wedding day.
A
N INDIAN man has pleaded guilty to the stabbing murder of his new wife at her Melbourne home during an argument after Australia Day drinks. Douglas Derick Eustace, 44, met Mary Freeman, 41, while on holidays and proposed to her within weeks so he could return from India to live in Australia. But less than four months after the October wedding, Eustace fatally stabbed Ms Freeman at her Hallam
home, shortly after midnight on January 27. “Guilty,” Eustace pleaded as he was arraigned on a single charge of murder in the Victorian Supreme Court. At an earlier court hearing, magistrate John Hardy granted AAP access to court documents, including witness accounts of the events surrounding the killing. The documents show Eustace turned himself in at a Dandenong police station, lighting a cigarette as a group of people watched him ar-
rive, asking how his night had been. “The man said, ‘Not good. I just killed my wife’,” one witness said in a statement. “He said, ‘I was sick of her. I couldn’t take it any more … I just slashed her’.” Another bystander said the man put out his cigarette and walked casually inside to speak with police, smirking. “I was totally shocked by how the male was acting and talking,” the witness said. “It seemed like he was totally calm and happy about what he had done. “He had a smirk on his face.” Eustace met Ms Freeman some four months earlier and they were married in October. A friend of Ms Freeman said she looked “sad and anxious” on her wedding day and later revealed she was “fed up” with the relationship. “She would say that she would only stay in it until (he) got his permanent visa,” the friend told police. “She was counting the days.” The stabbing took place after a lighthearted debate between Eustace and Ms Freeman evolved into an argument as they were drinking with friends on Australia Day. “They were having a discussion about who is superior, the female or the male,” one friend told police, noting the group was laughing at first. But it escalated, and the pair went into a bedroom before the friends heard loud screaming. They rushed in to find Eustace covered in blood and holding a large knife, court documents allege. Ms Freeman, with blood on her chest, was gasping and died despite her friends giving first aid and calling paramedics. Eustace, who is in custody, will return to court for a pre-sentence hearing on December 12.

Thousands of Dead Fishes Wash Ashore Mumbai’s Beaches After Ganesha Visarjan
A
n increasing number of devotees have switched to celebrating the extremely popular Maharashtrain festival of Ganesh Chathurti in an eco-friendly manner. However, it still leaves out a large population that remains wary of the environmental harms they cause. This in turn has, over the last few years, led to the severe damage of the ecological balance of the city's coastline. A lot has been done to create awareness and implement preventive measures, but with the numbers involved, these efforts have not had an impact. Also, being a sensitive issue, activists tread carefully. Yet it is imperative to point that most environmentally-harmful practices are products of the last couple of decades. Here are some of the most damaging consequences of the city's most favourite festival: Plaster of Paris IdolsThe most damage perhaps arises out of the idols made out of Plaster of Paris (PoP). E-coexist.com explains, “PoP is not a naturally occurring material. While idols made out of naturally occurring clay (shaadu in Marathi) dissolve within hours of immersion in water, PoP idols may take anywhere between several months to years to fully dissolve. In addition, when chemical paints are used to decorate the idols, these paints contain heavy metals such as mercury and lead, which seep into the water as the idol dissolves.” Decorations used at the Nirmalya or place of worshipAnother potential threat arises from the use of non-biodegradable products used to decorate the place of worship. Many a times, even those who opt for an eco-friendly idol, tend to use objects such as thermocol, plastic and chemical paints for the purpose of decorating their place of worship, which create issues of waste
Follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/IndianNewsQueensland
management. What is worse is that some even tend to immerse these decorations along with the idol. “In Pune and Mumbai, the municipal corporations tell people not to immerse the 'nirmalya' into the water. Instead, they have installed large bins shaped as traditional pots or 'kalashes' to receive this,” informs e-coexist.com. Visarjan or ImmersionWith the number of idols involved and their competing sizes, the action of idol immersion itself, is extremely harmful to the environment. So even those with eco-friendly idols end up contributing to the excessive materials added into the water bodies causing unintentional damage to the ecosystem. To add to that, nonbiodegradable idols can block the natural flow of water bodies, allowing stagnation. A set of guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)point out, “In the present scenario, metals, ornaments, oily substances, synthetic colours, chemicals are used to make paint and decorate idols for worship and when these idols are immersed our aquatic and surrounding environments get severally affected.” A related study on lakes by CPCB in 2010 found that:* The acid content in the waters increased* The TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) increased by a 100%* The Dissolved Oxygen content increased during the day due to the agitation of waters during immersion and reduced at night when organic discharge increased* The heavy metal content sampling showed a ten fold increase in metals such as iron, while copper content in the sediments increased by 200 to 300%. Considering the day-to-day rise of pollution, as a devotee, one can take many precautionary measures to ensure environmental safety during the festive seasons.

AIBC National Chair Jim Varghese shares his vision for Australia - India Business relations
A
ustralia India Business Council Nation Jim Varghese shares an insight to the future plans of AIBC. Jim says “I am very encouraged that Ms. Sanushka Seomangal, AIBC National Vice Chair from NSW and I have been elected by a majority of 88 per cent of all the votes cast in a secret national ballot. This is a great vote of confidence in our election platform of driving a sharper business focus for all activities of the Australia India Business Council. I have commenced a process of updating our national and state strategic plans. These plans will have Key Performance Indicators and provide a sharper business focus to all our activities. We will use the ‘An India Economic Strategy to 2035 - navigating from potential to delivery’ report as the policy framework for our strategic plans and incorporate any strategic responses from the Government of India. I will set up a National Chair’s Email hotline for members of the AIBC to
give constructive feedback and business focused suggestions. At the end of the day we have a very simple Key Performance Indicator: What have we done to increase the trade and investment between Australia and India? I look forward to working with our membership and our stakeholders to increase and enhance the business to business relationship between states and territories of Australia and the states of India. Our network of state and territory chapters will be energised and empowered to embrace our ambitious business agenda. I also welcome more involvement from Australians of non-Indian origin as we consolidate our identity as the pre-eminent Australia India Business Council. We look forward to working collaboratively with any persons or organisation that supports our business objectives and outcomes, especially through our industry chapters.”

Red meat industry to review structures
T
he document that governs the red meat industry is being reviewed nearly twenty years after it was
created. The Red Meat Advisory Council has announced the industry’s Memorandum of Understanding will undergo a comprehensive review led by Mr Jim Varghese AM. “The MOU has been a foundation document for the red meat and livestock industry over the past twenty years and this review is about evaluating, enhancing and elaborating on the successes we have had under the MOU,” said chair of RMAC Mr Don Mackay. The review will be undertaken by a taskforce chaired by Mr Varghese, a renowned policy thinker and reviewer who has held various private and public service roles including Director-General roles in Main Roads, the Department of Education, Employment and Training and the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries in both Queensland and Victoria and the current Chair of the Australia-India Business Council. “It is my expectation that this review will strategically position the industry for future challenges and opportunities. I look forward to working with all the key stakeholders to produce a revised MOU that would ensure the sustainability and prosperity of Australian red meat and livestock businesses,” Mr Mackay said.
www.indiannewsqld.com.au
Expressions of interest for the remaining five taskforce spots will be open from today until October 3. “We are looking for high quality candidates from a range of disciplines and backgrounds for our taskforce,” Mr Mackay said. “We want a breadth of experience across policy making, governance, advocacy and out of the box thinkers to make this review as comprehensive and effective as possible.” Recommendations are expected by the end of March 2019. Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud welcomed the review, saying the red meat industry was “big business” and there was a need to make sure it was ready for new opportunities and challenges. “The MOU put in place 20 years ago carves out the funding and service delivery arrangements between peak councils, research and development corporations and the Commonwealth,” he said. “What was put in place two decades ago might not be fit for today. “The review is also in line with the recommendations of the Senate Inquiry into the effect of market consolidation on the red meat processing sector. “It is an important opportunity to set the direction of the sector. “I thank RMAC for showing the leadership to have this work done.”

T
he month of Purattasi starts from the mid of September and ends in mid of October. This month is referred to as Pathrapadham in Sanskrit. This is the sixth month in the Tamil calendar. The month of Purattasi has many significances as per the Hindu mythology. As per Hindu faith it is believed that the departed souls from body rests peacefully in the adobe of the almighty. During this month the departed souls are believed to descend to earth from the cosmic world seeking attention from family members. It is believed that on the first fifteen days of this month these souls rest on earth which is referred to as Magalaya Batcham. Therefore, the respective family members of the departed soul are advised to offer their rituals to the departed souls to get blessings and prosperity. Navarathiri, one amongst the famous Hindu festivals falls in this month. Navarathiri as the name
suggests is celebrated for nine days. Nava means 9 and Rathiri means night in Tamil. During these nine nights generally, women offer special prayers to Goddess Durga (Shakthi). This festival is celebrated in many ways across the Indian sub-continent. This festival is also termed as Dussehra in the northern part of India. It is believed that Goddess Durga (Shakthi) waged a war against the demon Magishasuran for eight days and attained victory on the ninth day. To celebrate the victory of the Goddess all the devas in the cosmic world worshipped the Goddess with their weapons the very next day of victory. This day is celebrated as Vijayadasami (meaning Vijay-Victory, Dasami-10th day). Throughout these ten days people offer different forms of idol worship at their home, invite others to their home to take part in worship, distribute gifts to young female kids who take part in the worship and serves food to those who
come home for the worship. During Vijayadasami people tend to clean all their daily use work instruments, present it in front of Goddess Durga to cherish in their work. This day is also considered very auspicious for kids who start their schooling. In early days parents take their children to teachers (gurus) in this day to start their lessons in education/ arts. This practice is still being followed in many parts of India. Another important happening is the Navarathiri Brahmotsavam in the Lord Balaji temple at Tirupathi (10th to 18th of October 2018). During these nine days the Lord takes a ride in different chariots around the streets of the temple. Worshipping Lord Balaji during these events will result in immense visual pleasure and mental peace to the devotees. May we all worship Goddess Durga and Lord Balaji during this auspicious month and attain prosperity.

'Modicare': India's Prime Minister promises free health care for country's poorest citizens
I
ndia’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, has launched the world’s biggest health insurance scheme, promising free coverage for half a billion of India’s poorest citizens ahead of national elections in May. The bottom 40% of India’s 1.25 billion people will be covered under the flagship program, dubbed “Modicare”, unveiled in the federal budget earlier this year. The 100 million lowest-income families will be provided 500,000 rupees ($6,900) – a sizeable sum in India – in annual health insurance to treat serious ailments. Modi handed medical cards out at the launch in Ranchi, capital of the eastern state of Jharkhand, calling it a historic day for India. “We want to strengthen the hands of the poor and stand shoulder to shoulder with them in pursuit of good health,” he said on Twitter. The scheme is expected to cost the central and 29 state governments $1.6bn per year. Funding will be increased gradually according to demand. India’s overburdened public health
system is plagued by a shortage of facilities and doctors and most people use private clinics and hospitals if they can afford to. More than 60% of the average family’s spending goes on medicines and healthcare, the government estimates. A private consultation can cost 1,000 rupees ($15), a huge sum for millions living on less than $2 a day. A report published this month by The Lancet medical journal found substandard healthcare was responsible for an estimated 1.6 million deaths a year in India – the highest anywhere in the world. Modi will seek a second term in next year’s elections on a platform of pro-poor policies and “Modicare” is a key plank of his pitch to low-income Indians. But critics have questioned how the government plans to fund such an enormous safety net. “This is going to be another scam. It will benefit only private insurance companies. Agarbatti (Incense Sticks) smoke is MORE harmful than cigarette smoke and may cause cancer! Why agarbatti smoke is dangerous Agarbattis are an important part of Hindu rituals. Not only do they signify spirituality but also denote peace and prosperity. While the smell of all things good may make you feel calm from within, chances are that agarbatti smoke may be harming you more than a cigarette! Study As per a 2015 Chinese study, when agarbattis are lit, the smoke that comes out has tiny particles which disperse in the air. Turns out, that these fragrant sticks emit toxic particles which can harm our body at a cellular level. Genetic mutation GENETIC MUTATION: The study confirmed that incense smoke contains three kinds of toxins which

can lead to cancer. These three kinds are mutagenic, genotoxic, and cytotoxic. Therefore, agarbattis can cause a gene to mutate, which is the first pre-requisite to cancer and other lung diseases. Genetic mutation can cause a change in the DNA, which is not a good sign. Reaction REACTION: Once you breathe in the smoke coming from agarbattis, it gets trapped in the lungs, which can lead to an inflammatory reaction. Since the particles contain as many as 64 compounds, it can cause irritation in the respiratory passage. Extra fine particles EXTRA FINE PARTICLES: This is mainly due to the fact that agarbattis contain extra fine particles which can be dangerous to our body, and the addition of artificial fragrances can only add to this danger.

The Way God Helps
T
here was a small village by the river. Everyone lived happily and offered regular prayers at the village temple (Church). Once during the monsoon season, it rained heavily. The river started overflowing and flood entered the village. Everyone started to evacuate their homes and set out to go to the safe place. One man ran to the temple (Church). He quickly went to the priest’s room and told him, “The flood water has entered into our homes and it is rising quickly. And water has also started to enter the temple. We must leave the village as in no time it will sink under the water! Everyone has set out to go to the safer place and you must come along”. The priest told the man, “I am not an atheist like you all and I have a full faith in God. I trust the God that he will come to save me. I will not leave the temple, You may
go!” So, the man left. Soon, the water level started to rise and reached the waist height. The priest climbed on the desk. After a few minutes, a man with the boat came to rescue the priest. He told the priest, “I was told by the villagers that you are still inside the temple, so I have come to rescue you, please climb on the boat”. But the priest again refused to leave giving him the same reason. So the boatman left. The water kept rising and reached to the ceiling, so the priest climbed to the top of the temple. He kept praying to the God to save him. Soon the helicopter came, they dropped the rope ladder for the priest and asked him to climb on and get inside the helicopter, so they can take him to the safer place. But the priest refused to leave by giving him the same reason again! So, the helicopter left to search and help others.
At last, when the temple nearly submerged under the water, the priest kept his head up and started complaining, “Oh Lord, I worshiped you for all my life and kept my faith in you! Why didn’t you come to save me?!” The God appeared in front of him and with a smile, he said, “Oh mad man, I came to save you three times! I came running to you to ask you to leave for the safest place with other villages, I came with a Boat, I came with a Helicopter! What is my fault if you didn’t recognize me?!” The priest realized his mistake and asked for forgiveness. He got his chance to go to the safe place one more time, which he accepted. Moral: In life, opportunities come unknowingly without any recolonization. We fail to recognize it and keep complaining that life didn’t give us the opportunity to lead a successful life. Always take every chance you get to make a better life.

Canadian Rockies and Alaska – A Winning Combination!!
I
was recently on a cruise tour of the Canadian Rockies and Alaska – and it still rates for me as the second-best holiday ever – obviously after my honeymoon! So, when we’re asked about our favorite cruise destinations, the answer for me is always easy – the Canadian Rockies and Alaska. Why? O Canada! Thank this glorious land for maple syrup, peanut butter and Jim Carrey on this spectacular sojourn through the stunning Rocky Mountains. Nature drank a lot of coffee when she designed these two epic destinations. Twice as big as Texas, Alaska is a pristine paradise overflowing with grand glaciers, mighty mountains, fir forests that stretch forever and wondrous wildlife – plus near 24-hour daylight in the northern summer to see it in all its glory. For me, Alaska and its unspoiled beauty evoke emotions that make me want to go back. Add a dose of ‘Rocky Mountain High’ vaccine to your Alaska cruise and you have a prescription for one truly breathtaking holiday. I had the fortune of preceding my cruise with a rail and coach tour from Vancouver to the Canadian Rockies. Wow – what an experience! We started in Vancouver, one of the world’s prettiest Harbour cities, and took the bucket-list Rocky Mountaineer train to Jasper following a picture postcard route snaking through towering peaks. We enjoyed the view from domed glass ceilings on two-storey carriages affording stunning views in all directions. Just don’t drink too much water. Pity the traveler on the Rocky Mountaineer who goes to the restroom and comes back to hear fellow passengers spotted a whole family of brown bears waving at the train! Or so they’ll tell you!

The best thing about combining the Canadian Rockies and Alaska in the one holiday is that after you return from the Rockies to Vancouver, the adventure is only half over as a luxury, week-long cruise to Alaska is still ahead of you. It’s hard to find a week-long cruise as perfect as one to Alaska, with an idyllic mix of ports, scenic cruising past glaciers and relaxed days at sea. I love the three main Alaskan ports of Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway with their gold rush saloons, frontier spirit, colorful, indigenous Tlingit culture and the majesty of the mountains just a few streets away. The highlight, of course is Glacier Bay where massive glaciers thunder into the fjord. What a thrill! You won’t want to be inside playing bingo on that day! Here are some other reasons why Alaska is an ideal cruise destination: The Scenery – Breathtakingly spectacular sums up Alaska. Abundant pine forests, towering, snow-cloaked mountains, mighty glaciers plummeting into the sea, glistening lakes and frontier gold towns with ‘wild west’ saloons. The famous Inside Passage that almost every Alaskan cruise trace is a maze of beautiful waterways lined by a thick green blanket of pines, cedars, firs and hemlocks. Your cruise ship will stop in front of a massive glacier in Glacier Bay, so you can watch the awe-inspiring process of ‘calving’, where giant pillars of ice tumble into the ice-blue water in front of you. The Wildlife – From the ship or ashore you are bound to see some of Alaska’s rich bounty of wildlife including whales, otters, bears, deer, caribou, moose, bison, eagles and salmon. The Culture – Alaska boasts a rich fabric of native Indian and Eskimo cultures, showcased in recreated vil-
lages and colorful song and dance shows that cruise passengers can visit. Great Ports – There may be three or more ships docked at the ports, but each destination is filled with color, excitement, wonder – and lots of shopping. A stroll along the restored frontier-era storefronts and saloons of Skagway will take you back to the days of the Klondike Gold Rush. Lofty peaks loom over beautiful Juneau where a stop at the traditional Red Dog Saloon with its straw floor
will have you singing along with the guitar player. While in Ketchikan, we recommend visiting the Land of the Midnight Sun – Because Alaska is so far north, you can enjoy extra-long days of sunlight, daylight 24 hours a day during the summer solstice on June 21. Walking around the deck at 11pm after dinner and seeing Alaska in all her glory in muted daylight is a real thrill. Despite what you may think, Alaska is not that cold in summer, with average temperatures
Follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/IndianNewsQueensland
up to 18 degrees Celsius. Combining the Canadian Rockies and Alaska is a real feast for the senses and having done it myself, I can only say: do yourself a favor and treat yourself to one of the best holidays ever. You’ll be escorted by friendly tour hosts, almost everything is included, and everything is looked after from start to finish. You don’t even have to carry your bags between hotels, trains, ships and airports.

Raame brings multiculturalism to the regions—celebrating the famous moon festival at Strathpine, Qld By: Reena Augustine, Kelly Shorten, RAAME
“Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilisation.” — Mahatma Gandhi
T
hey say that when the opportunity knocks at your door steps you never say no, you grab and do it, if its successful you win and if not you learn. Same happened when I was given the opportunity to put on a multicultural fashion show for Brisbane North Chinese Association Inc. to celebrate Moon festival. I saw my dream turning into reality in a new place (Strathpine) and show in Queensland which myself and my organisation is very proud to bring to the people of Australia. The Audience were overwhelmed to be a part of this beautiful dream of togetherness that has now become a colourful, inclusive and successful reality. Every model came to the show with their best traditional outfit and full traditional make and were all very keen to walk the stage with pride. The crowd was ‘wowed’ at the authenticity and diversity of models who displayed traditional attire from over 40 countries, including members as young as 3 through to seniors aged 80 who have walked the earth for much longer. This simple act illuminated the shared values of unity and inclusivity that Raame aspires to and and deeply resonates the values held by the founder that’s me “Reena Au-
gustine” that, “No one is left behind”. As they rightly say “Love is the essence of life” ,Love grows with togetherness, it is the acceptance of others in our life despite many differences. From childhood, we grow up with the love and affection of our parents and family members. We experience the different pattern of love as we grew up like the love between siblings, love between friends. In each case, love works as a bond between people. The nature of love may vary from time to time, but the destiny is one and only to encourage togetherness. And this is what we proved on the day with a huge success of bringing various cultures together and mainly the importance of a connected society. “Global connectedness” and appreciation of different cultures, plays a key part in world peace and inclusion of individuals is the main factor for eradicating depression. Returning to our beginning…. if life is what happens when we are busy making other plans, we must all allow our plans breathing space. In a busy schedule we must never forget to pause, look around and embrace those opportunities for togetherness and multiculturalism that can be as simple as sharing a common thread. for true and meangingful connection to cultivate within our lives we need to stop, look up and connect with authenticity.

Indian News Queensland | HOROSCOPE
Horoscope October 2018 Aries
Mar 20 – Apr 20 This is likely to be a highly significant month for you! First of all, your time and attention lately has been on your finances or matters to do with your personal property. Now, as Mars assumes retrograde motion in this area of your chart, you can expect a slow down of your plans. Perhaps you are inclined to back pedal a little, which is no bad thing, particularly as, with the New Moon eclipsing the Sun in Libra, you have an opportunity to make a new beginning where partnerships are concerned. And since Jupiter spends a last three weeks also in Libra, before moving on into Scorpio, never has there been a greater chance for you to make your closest relationships all you want and need them to be.
Taurus
Apr 20 – May 21 As Mars turns retrograde in your sign expect some hold ups or delays in your current projects. You have probably been very busy lately and now you may feel a little frazzled as a result. But with the New Moon eclipsing the Sun in Libra, it is work or health matters that occupy most of your attention. You now have a chance to make a new beginning where the work scene is concerned and also in matters to do with your health or diet. And with Jupiter nearing the end of its journey through Libra, if you haven’t yet taken advantage of the opportunities that have presented themselves to you over the past year, where either your job or your health is concerned, then it is time that you did!
Gemini
May 21 – Jun 21 Mars has spent the last two months in the area of your chart connected with self sacrifice, and you may have been giving much of your time to helping others less fortunate than yourself. Or you may have been putting much energy into a project that has yet to be unveiled. Now, with Mars retrograde, there is a slow down in your plans or less demand for your time from others. But in the meantime, the New Moon eclipses the Sun in Libra, where Jupiter has been providing you with opportunities to grow and develop creatively. Now you have the chance for a new beginning in any creative venture, even for trying something new that gives you pleasure, which could range from games of any sort to romance.
www.indiannewsqld.com.au
Cancer
Jun 21 – Jul 23 Mars in Taurus has been pushing you towards working with others and encouraging you to spend time on your long term objectives. If you have been able to find like minded people with whom to work, then progress will have been made, but now, as Mars turns retrograde, you can expect a slowing down of your plans here. In the meantime, however, the New Moon on the October 3rd 2018, which eclipses the Sun in the area of your chart connected with home and family, heralds important new beginnings for you in this respect. While Jupiter has spent the last year in Libra, you have had many opportunities for growth or expansion in your home or family life. Since Jupiter moves on later this month, why not reach out now and take that step forward?
Leo
Jul 23 – Aug 23 While Mars has been in the area of your chart connected with your career and your public persona, you have been at your most ambitious, although working in harmony with colleagues will have needed some effort on your part. Now that Mars turns retrograde you relax a little and are less competitive and easier to get along with. Meanwhile, the New Moon on Monday, which eclipses the Sun in Libra, suggests that those opportunities that you have been experiencing throughout the last year regarding a change of location, or getting to grips with new ways of communicating, even learning new skills, are again being dangled in front of your nose! Jupiter only spends another three weeks in this area of your chart and the New Moon suggests new beginnings – so why not?
Virgo
Aug 23 – Sep 23 While Mars has been in Taurus, a lot of your time and energy has no doubt revolved around foreign matters, whether with travel or people, or perhaps in legal business too. And now, with Mars retrograde, you will need all your patience, as there may be a slowing down, or delays in your plans. But in the meantime, the New Moon, which eclipses the Sun in the area of your chart connected with your finances, allows you to make new beginnings where income or property is concerned. Jupiter is about to move on from here, having been presenting you with opportunities to improve either your income or your property during the past year. Now is the time to make that new start – will you take the opportunity to do so?
Libra
Sep 23 – Oct 23 The New Moon eclipses the Sun in your sign on the 3rd, and emphasises and reiterates what Jupiter has been offering you for the past year. You have a chance for a new beginning, an opportunity to change your attitude or your life in a big and advantageous way. Later in the month, the emphasis moves to your income and possessions, where you are inclined to be generous and even extravagant. But with Mars in Taurus, it seems you are prepared to fight for what you feel is rightfully yours where jointly owned property or shared resources are concerned. With Mars retrograde until early December, however, you may be persuaded to settle for less than you hoped for.
Scorpio
Oct 23 – Nov 22 While Mars, the co-ruler of your sign, remains in Taurus, there are signs of tension with partners or in your closest relationships. If you have a very good and strong relationship, however, much can be accomplished between you at this time. But now, with Mars in retrograde motion until early December, work on your joint projects slows down a little. And where tension between you is concerned, you are inclined to back off somewhat from your position of non-compromise, thus improving matters between you. In the meantime, the New Moon eclipses the Sun in the area of your chart connected with hidden matters and selfless love and you may now make a fresh beginning in this direction. And as you do so you will find, to your delight and gratification, that as Jupiter enters your sign at the end of the month, you enter a whole new phase of personal growth and self development that could set you on the right path for the next twelve years!
Courtesy: www.horoscope2018.guru Jupiter, your ruler, spends a last few weeks here so don’t miss your chance to find new friends and acquaintances who will join you in achieving your ideals.
Capricorn
Dec 23 – Jan 20 Jupiter has spent nearly a year in the area of your chart connected with your career or public persona and during this time any efforts you have made to get ahead should have resulted in considerable progress, with recognition or promotion. Now the New Moon eclipses the Sun here and you have a chance to capitalise on all that effort, to show the world a new you, or take an entirely new direction with your career or objectives. For the last two months, however, Mars has been chipping away at your self discipline, trying to get you to take time out to enjoy yourself or to give free rein to your creativity. But now, as Mars goes retrograde for a few weeks, you should be able to put the urge to have fun on the back burner and concentrate on your career and reputation at this very important time.
Aquarius
Jan 20 – Feb 18 While Mars has been in Taurus, your home and family will have been claiming much of your energy, time and attention and there would have been a certain amount of tension in the home if anyone tried to oppose your plans! Following this, Saturn aligns with Uranus, your ruler, indicating that concerns over finances or property become more of an issue, creating conflict between you and someone close.
Now, however, Mars turns retrograde and your plans suffer a slow down which will be to your advantage in the long term. Meanwhile, and more importantly, the New Moon eclipses the Sun in Libra on the 3rd and you have the opportunity to make a new beginning where travel, education or even legal matters are concerned. This continues the influence of Jupiter here during the past year, which has been giving you opportunities to widen your horizons in some way, perhaps by learning more about the world, its people and its languages. Since such major ingredients for change happen rarely, should you pass up this chance?
Pisces
Feb 18 – Mar 20 Jupiter has been in the area of your chart connected with jointly owned property or shared resources for the past year, bringing you opportunities for expansion in this respect. Now the New Moon eclipses the Sun here and heralds new beginnings where such matters are concerned. This could be a wonderful chance to restructure your joint budget or to benefit in some way from your shared property. In any case, you have three more weeks to make up your mind before Jupiter moves on into Scorpio. But can it be just co-incidence that the Full Moon on the 17th occurs in Aries, the area of your chart connected with your personal income and property and indicating, finally, that there can be a resolution to your financial dilemma?
Sagittarius
Nov 22 – Dec 22 While Mars remains in Taurus you are likely to have been suffering from some tension, either in the workplace or where your health and fitness is concerned. No doubt you have been working hard in either or both of these areas, but have also experienced some frustration whilst doing so. With Mars now retrograde in this area of your chart, whilst you continue to put in the effort, the tension should ease up slightly. Meanwhile, the New Moon eclipses the Sun in Libra and you have a wonderful opportunity to review and re-evaluate your long term goals and to find a group of like minded people to help you work towards them.

I
n 2015, Vicky Kaushal made his Bollywood debut with Masaan, which was first offered to Rajkummar Rao. Today, with back-to-back successes, Vicky is being hailed as the Rajkummar Rao of 2018. Vicky is basking in the glory of Lust Stories, Raazi, Sanju and now Manmarziyaan. And the actor can’t stop grinning ear to ear. “It feels very overwhelming. It’s not just for me, but for my entire family. They are in a very happy space right now. The films that I got to work on and them doing good and then people appreciating your work in it,” he says. “It is probably the best validation, the best compliment that when somebody says you are getting good things in life and you deserve this. I have had a journey where I have knocked at many doors and after all that journey, when people say you deserve to sit on this chair, that really feels good. It motivates you. It feels
that if you get this after working hard then why not work harder? “This appreciation, love motivate me to do that. It just makes you smile for no reason. It’s a beautiful phase to be in. It’s a beautiful space to be in that in the middle of a walk, a meeting or eating, you start smiling. You are so overwhelmed with the love you are getting,” the actor says. If stardom comes along with enviable perks, it also brings with it mammoth, nerve-wracking expectations from the audience and the industry who want you to keep the magic rolling. But for Vicky expectations are something he enjoys. “When you take this journey of becoming an actor, there are only destinations – one where people give you that limelight and expect the world from you, and two, they don’t know who you are and they don’t care what you are doing. You have to choose where you want to go. I have worked hard to reach here. I wanted them to
for a couple of years, including on Bombay Velvet in which he also had a cameo. The mentor-prodigee relationship has now turned into a friendship. “Anurag sir and I have had a beautiful journey as human beings. It’s been from him being my mentor to now being my buddy, I was scared when I thought I was working with my mentor. I am very much at ease when I know I am working with my buddy. That happened in a very organic way. It happened on Manmarziyaan. Having been directed by him in three films, Vicky, perhaps, understands Anurag’s working process better than other actors. That he would give both his arm and leg to work with him again is because Anurag works on his actors in a subliminal manner. “He is very intimate with his actors. He is not someone who will hold the mic and say, ‘Arey, do like this or that.’ If there’s something, he will come up to you and say it in your ears. He never tells you how to perform. He talks about the thought process. ‘Think about this and then try to do this. Imagine this world and this has happened to you and now this is what you want,’ he tells you this way.
T
he fourth character poster of Thugs of Hindostan is out and this one introduces Katrina Kaif ’s Suraiyya. In the poster, Katrina can be seen posing on a stage in front of an audience. According to the makers, Katrina “plays the role of an outrageously beautiful performer Suraiyya in Thugs of Hindostan. Suraiyya is the most gorgeous girl in British India who makes every man go weak in their knees. She is the best dancer of the country that people throng to watch.” From this character introduction,
we can be sure that Katrina will surely be seen in a great dance number in the film. She had earlier shot for a song with Prabhudheva for Thugs of Hindostan. Apart from Katrina Kaif, Thugs of Hindostan also stars Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Lloyd Owen. So far, we have already seen the character posters of Bachchan’s Khudabaksh, Shaikh’s Zafira and Owen’s John Clive. Aamir Khan’s character poster is still awaited. Thugs of Hindostan is being directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and is set to release on November 8.
Mukesh Ambani walks daughter Isha to Anand Piramal on her engagement day
M
ukesh and Nita Ambani's daughter Isha got engaged to Ajay and Swati Piramal's son Anand in a starry, dreamy ceremony at Lake Como in Italy over the weekend. The festivities continued for three days, from September 21 to 23 and saw the who's who of Bollywood adding star power to the event. Isha and Anand got engaged at the foothills of the Alps, as their parents and family members cheered them on. Mukesh Ambani walked Isha down to fiance Anand. Isha looked stunning in a biege dress, while Anand was the quintessential Indian groom in traditional attire. nied them down the aisle. The night saw a live performance by musician John Legend, as tourists in Lake Como watched the night sky lit up with an extensive display of fireworks that lasted quite some time. A bird's eye view of Lake Como last night left tourists at the resort area with their jaws on the floor. Many people took to Instagram to share glimpses of what they called an 'Indian Royal wedding' in Lake Como. The festivities kicked off on Friday with a welcome lunch and ends on Sunday with a farewell lunch. In between, the Ambanis and Piramals gave Lake Como a weekend to remember. Lake Como is arguably the most famous of all lakes in Italy and all of Europe, with Hollywood celebri-
ties regularly retreating to the resort town. George and Amal Clooney have a villa in Lake Como. However, all of that was put to shame this weekend, when Mukesh and Nita Ambani hosted their daughter Isha's formal engagement party in the Lombardy town. Bollywood stars Sonam Kapoor with husband Anand Ahuja flew down to Como from Milan after attending the Milan Fashion Week. Aamir Khan and wife Kiran Rao were also snapped at the engagement. Filmmaker Karan Johar made his way to the engagement ceremony with about 50 bags in tow. Khushi Kapoor flew from Mumbai on Friday morning, and her sister Janhvi joined her in Como from Switzerland, where the latter was
shooting for Brides Today. Fashion designer Manish Malhotra, who was with Janhvi during the Brides Today shoot, too was at Como. Malhotra posed with Priyanka Chopra and her fiance, American singer Nick Jonas, for a photo. Both Priyanka and Nick were dressed in Manish Malhotra creations. Anil Kapoor, meanwhile, left people mighty impressed, posing by the picturesque Como in a tux.

From about 3 kilometres from Villa Olmo, the venue of the engagement yesterday, tourists clicked a cavalcade of cars making their way to the 'Indian Royal wedding'. The Ambanis and Piramals made sure their kids' engagement was the event of a lifetime. Isha and Anand's families have been friends for over four decades now. The two are expected to tie the knot in December this year.
