In 2018, 46 films from 22 countries and areas of the Asia Pacific region received APSA nominations, including the first nomination for a film from Uzbekistan. During the Ceremony, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) announced the four recipients of the 9th round of the MPA APSA Academy Film Fund, created to support, at script stage, new feature film projects originated by APSA Academy members and their colleagues across Asia Pacific. ment of the ‘Bo Ai’ (Universal Compassion) spirit, promotion of tolerance, inspiring positive change and fostering the human spirit. The inaugural recipient was announced as director Feras Fayyad (Syria) for feature documentary The Cave. Fayyad was the winner of the APSA for Best Documentary Feature Film in 2017 for Last Men in Aleppo, which was also nominated for an Oscar. APSA International Jury President, Russian producer of 2014 APSA Best Feature Film Leviathan, Alexander Rodnyansky said “We have had the great fortune to be presented with a unique line up of films that represent the different countries, cultures and talents of our region. It’s a huge and very rare opportunity to learn and understand so much about other people’s lives and I have discovered new worlds by watching them. Shoplifters turns an intimate story about an unusual family into a metaphorical social analysis that is relevant not only for Japan, but everywhere, where we are faced with a frightening panorama of a family crisis and presented with a utopian alternative in which you can choose your relatives; where closeness becomes a conscious decision (even for children), not a predetermined fate.” Chair of APSA and its Academy Michael Hawkins said “Now in its 12th year, the Asia Pacific Screen Awards grows in strength and influence throughout the region, and the success of the Academy and its initiatives are testament to this. The MPA APSA Academy Film has had a record number films premiere in Cannes and Venice this year, as well as the Asia Pacific Film Lab project winning at Locarno. It is heartening to receive Academy members back to Brisbane, with APSA nominations, and to welcome our new Academy members from the 2018 nominees.” Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said: “My deepest congratulations to tonight’s winners. We are in awe of your creativity, perseverance and bravery. As Australia’s culturally-diverse New World City, we recognise the importance of connecting with our closest neighbours and of coming together to honour the creative talent of our vast region. I’m proud that Brisbane continues to shine a spotlight on powerful stories, foster cross-cultural dialogue and celebrate filmmakers whose accomplishments too often go unrecognised. The awards have brought some of the region’s most exciting filmmakers to the city alongside more than 600 film practitioners here for the World Congress of Science and Factual Producers. The Asia Pacific Screen Awards have been a driving force in transforming Brisbane into a film business hub, creating opportunity for local practitioners and strengthening the city’s significant business and cultural ties with the region.

Viswanathan, has carved a niche for himself in the history of Tamil Nadu, India and internationally through his educational and community leadership activities. He has served society in many capacities through politics, education and social work. He conceived high goals and has achieved them against all odds. He is founder of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) and has embossed both VIT and Vellore on the world map. I met Chancellor Viswanathan for first time during 1999-2000, during his visit to Australia. From my first meeting with him I realised his noble personality, service oriented thinking and concerns about community wellbeing. I have been really fortunate to meet Dr. Viswanathan and been given the opportunity to
work with him over the past 15 years in an organisation named Global Congress on Manufacturing and Management (GCMM). Dr. Viswanathan leads the GCMM board as President, and I as secretary. The GCMM board has organised 8 international congresses in number of countries, such as Australia, India, China, New Zealand, Thailand, Brazil, with the next congress in 2020 in Liverpool, UK. Dr. Visvanathan’s leadership and inclusive nature has helped to strengthen the GCMM board and expand internationally to 29 countries. I really admire his energy, vision, and strategic leadership in terms of community engagement, and supporting minority communities and other socially and economically disadvantaged communities. He has helped thousands of families to realise their dreams by providing educational opportunities irrespec-
tive of background, race or religion. In addition to his educational contribution, his work for the Tamil community is remarkable and outstanding. Recently he has started ‘Thamil Iyakkam’ and brought all Tamilians and various Tamil associations under its aegis. ‘Thamii Iyakkam’ encompasses Tamil settlers all over the world. Vaikuntha Ekadashi
Hindu Cultural Hub at Clayfield Courtesy: Viswa Easwaran
V
aikuntha Ekadashi falls during Dhanur solar month in Hindu calendar. Dhanur month or Dhanurmasa is known as Margazhi month in Tamil Calendar. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is Shukla Paksha Ekadashi out of two Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha Ekadashis in a month. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is observed according to Solar Calendar and because of that it might fall either in Margashirsha or in Pausha month in Hindu Lunar calendar. In Gregorian calendar there might be none, one or two Vaikuntha Ekadashi in a year. The Legend behind Ekadashi: Once Lord Vishnu was in his Yog Nidra when a demon named Murdanav came to challenge Him to a duel. Instead of Vishnu responding, a damsel arose from the Ekadash (eleven) Indriyas (organs) of Vishnu. Murdanav became so attracted to this damsel that he asked her to marry him. The damsel agreed, but only if he agreed to a duel with her. Blinded by passion, he agreed to a fight with her and she killed him. Pleased with her devotion, Vishnu granted her a boon. She replied, "Oh Prabhu! As I have manifested from your Ekadash Indriyas, let my
name be Ekadashi. I desire that people should observe the Ekadashi vrat (fast) and control their Ekadash indriyas on this day. Vishnu gave the blessing that "anyone who observes Ekadasi fast will be freed of their sins and will attain moksha." Ever since, Hindus fast on Ekadashi day, which occurs twice every month in the Hindu calendar. Benefits - Vaikuntha Ekadashi is also known as Mukkoti Ekadashi. It is believed that Vaikuntha Dwaram or the gate of Lord's inner sanctum is opened on this day and devotees who observe fast on Vaikuntha Ekadashi attain salvation by going to Heaven. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is very important day for Tirumala Venkateswara Temple at Tirupati and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is known as Swarga Vathil Ekadashi in Malayalam Calendar followed by people of Kerala. Parana means breaking the fast. Ekadashi Parana is done after sunrise on next day of Ekadashi fast. It is necessary to do Parana within Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before sunrise. Not doing
Parana within Dwadashi is similar to an offence. Parana should not be done during Hari Vasara. One should wait for Hari Vasara to get over before breaking the fast. Hari Vasara is first one fourth duration of Dwadashi Tithi. The most preferred time to break the fast is Pratahkal. One should avoid breaking the fast during Madhyahna. If due to some reasons one is not able to break the fast during Pratahkal then one should do it after Madhyahna. At times Ekadashi fasting is suggested on two consecutive days. It is advised that Smartha with family should observe fasting on first day only. The alternate Ekadashi fasting, which is the second one, is suggested for Sanyasis, widows and for those who want Moksha. When alternate Ekadashi fasting is suggested for Smartha it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day. Ekadashi fasting on both days is suggested for staunch devotees who seek for love and affection of Lord Vishnu.

For the very first time, five stalls were located at the entrance to the hall, where sponsors of the 2018 Diwali magazine displayed their businesses. The benefits of this celebration go beyond the reward of a great function celebrating the Hindu Festival with everyone. It helps strength the strong sense of Indian community, it provides an opportunity for other communities to enjoy our Indian culture and food, and it creates greater awareness of our Community and helps build a stronger community. The Society is thankful to all the performers that took part and the audiences who came out in great numbers and supported the event. Follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/IndianNewsQueensland

“When the Prime Minister of the country asks ‘How are you? How is your health?’ what more can bring happiness. I got an opportunity to even share some time with him during lunch. There were many more good moments when the ministers of various states got connected with me. I would actually meet them all when I went to their states; I would even request them to support this massive campaign. A lot of schools and colleges eventually started inviting me to speak in their institutes. In about thirteen months, I was able to take 4,278 lectures impacting more than 3.2 million students across the country. Apart from students, I got to spread awareness to lakhs of villagers, people at the hospitals, tea shops, and everywhere possible.” According to me “Economic growth is the tag that the world gives, when people over exploit the natural resources. This act of over exploitation of the resources leads to natural calamities and global warming. People affected by these natural calamities suffer even without food and water, leading to death. All of these are interlinked. If there is any kind of a problem that is occurring within the society, each of us is responsible!” “The entire world is a family. So, whenever I will be there at someone’s house, I will at the house of my own family. I will never feel a difference. We all are human being we should help each others.”

Why AIYAI: Wrathful Soul will be a success
The irrational fear of the unknown isn’t likely to diminish, in fact it is eternal, being embedded within the human DNA, harkening back to an extremely rational fear of the dark when our more primitive ancestors were in the greatest mortal danger. This hardwired survival instinct echoes through the generations and manifests sometimes as a fascination, which may be a direct link to subconsciously needing to study something in order to know how to best avoid or combat it.

Thus these stories resonate with viewers far more seamlessly than any other genre. The fact that these types of films are not driven by “A list” (and very expensive) cast, tells us all we need to know. As a genre it is without a doubt historically the most successful, especially when shooting budget to return ratios are closely examined (Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project, Halloween etc). People love to be scared, AIYAI will do just that. AIYAI is a Supernatural Thriller with international broad-spectrum appeal designed to cater to both the Asian and Western Markets. It is a spell bounding story translated in to an extremely captivating screenplay navigated by relatable distinct characters.

A major sequence of the Film has been shot in Jimbour Homestead, the largest English style heritage listed country house in Queensland. Built in the 19th Century, a symbol of grandness and opulence, it has added extraordinary production value to the Film. The aura of this architectural marvel has added another dimension to give a classic viewer experience. The audience are in for some jaw dropping horror and stunts in other crucial locations namely the age old Toowong Cemetery and a realistic set of a Crematorium room built by our master production designer. A fantastic screenplay executed visually by a skilled team, AIYAI is expected to prove it will be a stand out Film in terms of making, entertainment factor and keeping the audience engaged, to an extent they will be drawn deeply in to the world of the Film. aushaliya Vaghela describes her campaign for the Legislative Council seat from the Western Metropolitan Region as a crusade for the Indian community, which she says has given her abundant love and acceptance over the years. Calling herself a “proud migrant”, Ms Vaghela believes it’s high time we have an Indian representative in the Victorian Parliament. “I am a migrant, like so many of us, and I’m proud of that. I came to this country in 1998 and not a day goes by when I don’t recognise just how fortunate I am to live here,” Ms Vaghela told SBS Punjabi. “We are one of the most educated migrant community and we still do not have a representative in our Victorian Parliament. tative in Victorian Parliament, says Labour candidate Kaushalya Vaghela. Having served as a Multicultural Advisor to the Labor Party-led Victorian Government, Ms Vaghela is quite familiar with the halls of the Parliament and wishes to bring her experience and leadership to the position. “Entering politics wasn’t something I had planned for but being part of the advocacy group for the community has made me go on a political path. I have acquired the experience while working with a minister, and it has given me an insight as to how Australian politics or the government works,” said Ms Vaghela. Apart from her stint as an advisor, Ms Vaghela has also served as the President of the Victorian chapter of Subcontinental Friends of Labor (SCFOL), which is a conduit between the Labor Party and the members of the subcontinent communities. She has also held the position of a secretary within South
Asian Public Affairs Council (SAPAC) Australia, a non-profit organization that promotes the interests of the South Asian community. Labor can be trusted to deliver the infrastructure and investment we need in western suburbs, says Ms Vaghela. A scientist by profession, Ms Vaghela is making health care and education as central issues of her campaign. “We must aspire to lead the nation in education standards and continue to build quality schools to both cope with our rapidly expanding population in the West and educate the scientists of the future. “We must continue to invest in our health system to ensure no Victorian ever has to worry about what will happen if a loved one gets sicks,” added Ms Vaghela. She strongly believes that Labor Party has what it would take to improve infrastructure and living con-

Calls for dowry abuse to be recognized as domestic violence under Australian law
T
he disturbing number of Indian and South Asian women experiencing domestic violence and even being killed by their partners as a result of dowry-related abuse is an "alarming" problem that requires an urgent national response, the first hearing of the Senate inquiry into dowry abuse in Australia in September 2018. Survivors of dowry-related abuse and a range of experts working to address it gave evidence as part of the focused probe into the "alarming growth" of dowry abuse in migrant communities, which an ABC News investigation revealed has resulted in a spate of horrific murders and suicides in recent years. As part of the cultural practice, which has been illegal in India since 1961, a bride's family typically pays the groom and his family a dowry of cash, gold, gifts and property at the time of marriage. However, it is common for grooms and their families to escalate demands for additional sums, which has resulted in violence, abandonment and even death when brides do not comply. Indian and South Asian women who have migrated to Australia as part of arranged marriages and who have temporary migration status may also be threatened with deportation by their husbands, who have the ability to withdraw sponsorship of their wives' visas if they do not
deliver on demands for more dowry. There are many cases like the one in Maroochydore. A man slapped his wife of four months, dragged her by the hair and threatened to kill her because he was under pressure from his Indian family to extract a $20,000 dowry payment from her, a Queensland court has heard. Key points: Couple's marriage arranged in India and man's family demanded dowry payment, court heard Prosecutor said offences grounded in India's patriarchal culture Man's lawyer told court her client was familiar with Australian cultural values The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court to assault, assault occasioning bodily harm and breaching a domestic violence order. Magistrate Maxine Baldwin told the man that he would have had to have been "living under a rock" not to know that Australia was "very serious about domestic violence". She said she wanted to impose a sentence that would be a deterrent and show that Australia "has had a gutful" of domestic violence. The court was told the couple were brought together in an arranged marriage in India after knowing each other less than a month.
"I just went up there [India] and got married and came back within 28 days," the man told the court. But only four months into the arrangement there were problems. The court heard the man, an Australian citizen, brought his new wife back to south-east Queensland, but that the couple were from different religions. They were living with one of his relatives, and his family in India were calling to demand their $10,000 share of a $20,000 bridal dowry. Police prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Stephens told the court that over a week this year, the man threw a cup of tea on the floor, slapped his wife, dragged her by the hair, hitting her
head on the bed frame and threatened to kill her. The man's lawyer Anna Smith told the Maroochydore court her client had lived in Australia for a number of years, was familiar with Australian values and that his culture was not the reason for the assaults. Magistrate Baldwin said she accepted arranged marriages and dowries were Indian traditions but that she was not in a position to judge those cultural traditions. "The reality is this isn't over a dowry thing — the cultural aspect of that most Australians would find abhorrent," she said. "If you say he's an Australian he's been living here, isn't it incumbent
upon him to say, 'I'm in Australian, we live here, we don't collect dowries for women anymore'?" She sentenced the man to six months in prison, suspended for two years, ordering him to also undertake a domestic violence prevention program. Melbourne-based international anti-dowry campaigner Manjula O'Connor told the committee it was also vital the Australian Government consider how women on temporary migrant visas could be better protected from — and receive support for — dowry-related abuse and threats of deportation given their ineligibility for Centrelink, Medicare and longterm housing.
3 Indians Drown in Moonee Beach While Saving Family Members
T
wo Indian nationals died and another is still missing after they drowned in Australia's Moonee beach on Monday. All the three victims belonged to the same family and have been identified as residents of Telangana. The accident occurred after the trio jumped into the water to rescue their family's drowning children but were caught in the currents. The children were saved by a rescue team and taken to the hospital. Nazreen, sister of Junaid who is still missing, said, "My brother Mohammed Abdul Junaid, 28, was staying in Sydney since 2014. Yesterday, Junaid along with his father-in-law Mohammed Ghouse Uddin, his two daughters Easha, 17, Ramsha, 12, one son Mohammed Aaqib, 15, and his cousin Rahat went to Moonee beach near Coffs Harbour for a holiday." "Three children were playing near the seashore when they got troubled
in the waves. On seeing this Junaid, along with his father-in-law Ghouse Uddin and cousin Rahat sprung into the water to save the children. All of them were facing difficulty in the water and were drowning when a rescue team reached the spot and saved the three children." The rescue teams were also able to rescue Ghouse and Rahat from the sea but were unable to revive them. Junaid could not be found. The search operation for him had started yesterday but was stopped due to low light. The search operation resumed in the morning. The three children Easha, Mohammed Aaqib and Ramsha are currently undergoing treatment in Coffs Harbour hospital. Police praised the “outrageously brave” locals involved in the initial search with one lifesaver going 700m from the beach to rescue one of the teenagers. Coffs Harbour City Council lifeguard co-ordinator Greg Hackfath
told Nine News Moonee Beach is unpatrolled and Moonee Creek which feeds into the beach has a “strong flowing outgoing tide”. “We had a significant amount of rain the day before yesterday overnight and coupled with an outgoing tide and a lot of rain with flood waters, the creek was roaring,” he said. “I can only assume they have gone swimming in the creek and perhaps the three teenagers went in first and got into trouble and then the three adults have gone in, and then, unfortunately, it’s been a horrific result.” The Beach Safe website states that the 4.6km stretch is not patrolled by lifeguards. “It faces east-southeast and is one of the more exposed and hazardous, with waves averaging over 1.5m,” the website reads. An investigation has been launched and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Dementia trials on humans in Queensland
A
ustralian dementia sufferers could have their memories restored if a Queensland trial of a breakthrough ultrasound technique proves successful in humans. The technology removes toxic plaques from the brain and has successfully reversed Alzheimer's symptoms and restored memory function in animal models at the University of Queensland's Brain Institute. Professor Jurgen Gotz says researchers using ultrasound have been able to activate microglial cells, which he describes as "kind of garbage men" that go through the brain removing all the toxic things that float around. "When you look into an Alzheimer's brain, the brain
is full of toxic amyloid and normally these garbage men should do their job," he said. "But sometimes they don't it," he said. So with the ultrasound the scientists trigger them to do their job and then they remove the amyloid and at the same time restore memory function. Prof Gotz says the technique is not a full cure for the disease. But researchers hope that once it is further developed, the method will allow plaque to be removed for about three years before another treatment is required. "We will push out the age at which Alzheimer would develop, which effectively means for a patient it could feel like a cure," he said. "When used at a stage when the (disease) is not too
advanced ... Alzheimer disease can be prevented even in people who are predisposed." Testing of the pioneering ultrasound technique will begin in Brisbane in late 2019 following a federal government grant of $10 million. The trial will involve a small number of patients and will explore whether the technique developed at UQ in 2015 is safe to use in the fight against the degenerative condition. Alzheimer's disease affects more than 350,000 people nationwide. UQ says that without a medical breakthrough, the number of Australians living with the disease is expected to increase to almost 1.1 million by 2056, bringing the cost of hospitalization, care and lost productivity to more than $1 trillion.
All you need to know about Lime, Australia’s newest bike-sharing operator
U
S company Lime has disregarded the failures of oBike, ReddyGo and ofo in Australia, and launched its bike-sharing service in Brisbane and Sydney. The company believes its Aussie venture will find similar success to that which they already found in the US and Europe. “Sydney’s need for innovative transports solutions gives us confidence we will see high uptake of Lime electric bikes within the community,” said a spokesman in a press release. Lime also said that they have found success in cities “similar to Sydney, such as Seattle”. Just like other bike-sharing apps that have launched in Australia, Lime’s fleet of electric scooters and bikes are planted in several locations around the city for you to access. All you need to do is download the Lime app on your smartphone, find nearby scooters, e-bikes and pedal bikes, scan the QR code or enter the bike code to unlock it and you’re away. Once you’re done riding around you just have to lock your bike back up and leave it in a safe, sensible area for the next user. How much do Lime bikes cost? The price to ride any Lime vehicle is $1 to unlock the bike or scooter and $0.15 for every minute you ride. That’s $1 every four minutes, $5 for 20 minutes and $15 per hour. If you plan on using a bike all day, keep costs down by picking up a new one for each ride. Where can I find them? You can find Lime bikes all over the United States as well as in Paris, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Brussels and even New Zealand. In Australia, they’re limited to Sydney and Brisbane so far.
www.indiannewsqld.com.au
In Sydney, the bikes are restricted to the inner city. Your best bet of finding one is in places like Surry Hills, Sydney CBD, The Rocks and Newtown, but there’s over 300 scattered across Sydney. Bad news for those living in the suburbs, though – there are absolutely none available. Let’s hope that Lime is a success in its initial roll-out so we can get some bikes in Blacktown! What kind of bikes are there? Lime offers three distinct vehicles. The Lime-S is an electric scooter with a 250-watt motor that offers a 32+ kilometre maximum range and 23.8 kph max speed. You monitor the scooter’s battery via the app to avoid getting stranded. At this stage, the scooter is only available in Brisbane. The main offering – and what’s hitting Sydney – is the Lime-E electric assist bike. Rather than being fully electric, the Lime-E automatically engages the motor to give the rider a bit of a boost once you start pedalling. This bike has the same motor and maximum speed as the scooter, but a much larger 80+ kilometre range. Also hitting Sydney is the LimeBike, which come in 1-speed, 3-speed and 8-speed variants. For example, the 1-speed is fine for short rides around the city, the 3-speed will let you climb some hills and the 8-speed is best for those riding down the M2 cycleway. Are there any rules? Well, there are two main rules: don’t steal the bike and don’t leave it in a random place for someone else to deal with. Users also have to be 18+ and have a driver’s license to qualify to drive the Lime-S scooter. Apart from that you just need to abide by standard traffic rules, wear a helmet, park away from pedestrian walkways and use hand signals. Oh, and don’t toss your bike in the Yarra
River like oBike users did in Melbourne. Will Lime succeed? I hope so. Their service has proven massively successful, particularly on American college campuses and in European cities. There’s no reason why Aussies couldn’t benefit from the same service, whether it’s in universities or across the entire city. Lime’s electric fleet should set it
above previous share bike companies. Companies like ofo and oBike offered regular bikes that people weren’t particularly comfortable riding in Sydney traffic, and they weren’t suited to Sydney’s size and layout. Other bike-sharing apps also lacked government support, something the NSW government has promised to change.
Follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/IndianNewsQueensland
Lime predicts its service will be very popular in Australia’s summer months. They’re hoping places like Bondi, Manly and other inner city hubs will be teeming with locals and tourists exploring the city on their bikes and scooters. Bike-sharing is an important mode of sustainable transport and I think that with Lime, Sydney will finally embrace it.

The Faith of Test Series would be History
A
ustralia vs India, fourth Test at the SCG — The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is no longer up for grabs but there is still plenty to play for in the fourth Test between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Both teams will be playing for the same thing in the New Year’s Test — history. The Indians are looking to make it and the Australians are out to avoid doing the same thing. Anything other than a loss for Virat Kohli’s men and they will become the first Indian team to win a Test series in Australia in their 71 years touring the country. Tim Paine and teammates try out some pink hats ahead of the fourth On the flipside, if Tim Paine’s team fails to win the Sydney Test they will become the first Australian side to ever lose a Test series at home to a team from Asia. In truth, that says more of how incredible a feat this would be for Kohli’s team than Australia. Af-
ter all, it is a feat that evaded the Pakistani outfit of the late ‘80s and ‘90s, featuring Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Javed Miandad; the Indians of the ‘00s with Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble; and the Sri Lankans of the same decade with Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardne. No wonder Kohli said winning in Australia was an “obsession” for him after India’s dominant win in the Boxing Day Test. For the Australians, it is a new year. Despite starting the year with Ashes glory, 2018 will not be fondly remembered by the Australians who won just three Tests and were plunged into crisis at Cape Town. However, victories have been few and far between, and so too have centuries. Three matches into the home summer and no Australian batsman has registered a century — India’s batsmen have tallied three tons so far.
Indian Cricket Team in Australia 2018-2019

he India cricket team are currently touring Australia from November 2018 to January 2019 to play four Tests, three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. Initially, the Test match at the Adelaide Oval was planned to be a day/night fixture, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declined the offer from Cricket Australia to play the match under lights. In April 2018, the Western Australian Cricket

Association confirmed that the Perth Stadium would host its first ever Test match. During the second Test, it became the tenth venue in Australia to host a Test match. India's regular wicket-keeper for limited overs matches, MS Dhoni, was not named in the side's squad for the T20I fixtures for this series and the ones against the West Indies. Instead, India's Test wicketkeeper, Rishabh Pant, was selected in Dhoni's place. The T20I series was drawn 1–1, after the second match finished in a no result.

ent of the children, the impact of the drama was further enhanced by the costumes they wore. Several hours of practice went into the drama and for the senior students, this was also a learning experience in that they learnt about Ramayan and also about various characters in the epic. In addition, they also learnt about the art of public speaking, dramatics and time management. Throughout the act children carried the character and exhibited their deep understanding. The moral that the children learnt was that irrespective of our relationships and circumstances one has to always uphold Dharma. Furthermore, the parents of BSK were taken down the memory lane by the short video on activities of BSK such as celebrating festivals and other events in 2018. This was also a motivational video for all other audience to understand the way BSK operates and celebrates. This year is quite significant as it marks the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s address at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. His historic speech changed the perception of other nations and religions towards Bharat and Hindu Dharma. The series of events which happened before and during the Chicago summit were brilliantly enacted in the form of drama by students and parents. The skit included key events of Swami Ji’s life such as the birth of Narendranath Dutta, his childhood
and the education along with his journey of transformation from Narendranath to Swami Vivekananda. The skit further continued Swami Vivekanand’s journey to Chicago and his addressing the parliament of world religions. The whole auditorium was echoed with applauses when our student addressed the parliament as “My dear brothers and sisters….”. This was astonishing to the spectators. A booklet published by VHP Queensland, containing all the essential sholkas for recitation by children was released by Swami Atmeshananad ji. The first copy was received by Smt. Archana Singh. This book will be given as a part of BSK curriculum for 2019 prospective students. The booklet is also available to general public at a nominal cost of $5. Those interested can request a copy by sending email to bskqld@live.com.au. The students from Gold Coast centre then performed a dance in the praise of Lord Krishna. The boys were dressed up as Lord Krishna and girls as Radha. This was followed by a scintillating group dance by the children to a song from the popular Telugu movie Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum. The dance depicted the avatars of Lord Vishnu with a message about how good always triumph over evil. The children dressed up as avatars of Vishnu and narrated the story of each avatar through dance. The dance was well received by the dance who asked for it to be done once more. The costume, props, lighting, powerful song and the amazing performance by the students took it to a different level. The honourable guests shared their thoughts and gave their blessings and encouragement to the students.
Further, the efforts of children were acknowledged by the distribution of certificates and trophies. The programme ended by the vote of thanks acknowledging the efforts and contribution all involved in the success of the event. BSK Queensland thrives to organise many such events that will bring positive changes in the life of our children and parents. The BSK Queensland has been functioning since 2010 in Queensland and is run by dedicated volunteer parents and on a not-for-profit basis. The BSK classes are held on Sundays (during regular school terms) from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM in Brisbane (at Sunnybank State High School, Sunnybank) and in Gold Coast (at Benowa State High School, Benowa). During the first one hour and fifteen minutes children are taught the essential values that underpin Hindu Dharma, shlokas and value education from Hindu scriptures. Also, BSK inculcates interest in ancient Sanskrit language that forms the foundation for Vedas and Upanishads, and therefore spoken Sanskrit is also being taught. Then for 45 minutes, children are also taught traditional Indian games, yoga and exercise for everyday practice to make them strong and develop leadership qualities. BSK believes that a healthy mind and healthy body are important for all round development of a child. In the remaining 30 minutes, children learn their own mother tongue. Please contact BSK Queensland at bskqld@live.com.au for additional information, in relation to the Sunday classes, volunteering and sponsoring opportunities.

Infused water recipes for when plain H2O just won’t cut it
T
he first rule of wellness: Hydration, hydration, hydration. Basically, every healthy influencer swears by downing a glass of water first thing in the a.m. (with a nice slice of lemon, of course), dietitians preach about its importance in aiding digestion, and beauty experts swear it’s the key to having dewy, glow-y skin. But here’s the thing: Not everyone loves the taste of plain water, making drinking enough a bit of a struggle. And it probably means you’re more likely to reach for juice, soda, or kombucha than H20—making your hydration habit come with a sizable side of sugar. Womp, womp. But there’s no need to just be sad and basic with your water in the quest of good health. You can infuse your water with fruit, herbs, and spices to add flavor without any added sugars—so it’s really the best of both worlds. And a word to the wise: Infused waters are also clutch during holiday season when you’re trying to hydrate after a long night of nog and mulled wine. What’s not to love? 1. Strawberry-orange mint water This combo of citrus and mint from Simple Vegan Blog creators Alberto Aragon and Iosune Robles is basically the definition of refreshing. Since winter isn’t exactly peak strawberry season, buy a bag of frozen ones, slice, and add a few after they de-thaw. 2. Strawberry rosewater chia fresca The First Mess creator Laura Right loves a good chia-infused water— but she adds a floral twist with one teaspoon of rosewater. The mix of fruit and floral gives it the perfect amount of sweetness—you won’t even be tempted to add sugar. 3. Pomegranate mint water Give your glass a holiday twist with just two ingredients: pomegranate

and mint. (And optional honey, although that’s technically an added sugar!) Not only are you getting a nice boost of antioxidants and vitamin C, but the mint also helps with digestion, making this infusion a good one to sip on after you eat. 4. Veggie water Of course, fruit isn’t your only infusion option; adding veggies can be just as refreshing. Oh, So Delicioso blogger Desarae Fowler likes making a big water dispenser, adding in celery, cucumber, parsley, lime, and mint, and refilling her glass all day. Talk about spa water vibes! 5. Rosemary citrus water Sure, adding a few sprigs of rosemary to things like pizza and roast chicken is normal, but trust: It taste great in water, too. Delightful E Made blogger Erin Indahl-Fink balances out the flavor with a few slices of lemon, adding a layer of brightness to the taste. 6. Cucumber mint water Cucumber mint is the little black dress of water infusions—a classic. It has only two ingredients (besides, you know, the water and optional lime), but it elevates the taste so much that you’ll likely drink more than you would otherwise. Pretty great hydration hack, right? 7. Lavender mint water Notice a theme here? Mint pairs well with virtually anything—and that includes lavender. This is a great infusion to sip on when you want to experience a bit of calm, like if you’re stressed out at work or there’s a lot going on at home. Sip, swallow, and breathe. 8. Lemon orange cherry bergamot mint water This infusion is both calming *and* energizing due to the mix of bright citrus and grounding cherries, which is linked to promoting sleep and relaxation. And it also has— you guessed it—mint.
Do you think Google’s “smart compose” create inboxes full of Gmail-speak?
G
oogle unveiled Gmail’s new Smart Compose feature at its annual developer conference in May & later modified it further in September. Smart Compose builds off the idea of Smart Reply, predicting what you’ll write next as you type in the body of an email. To turn on Smart Compose, make sure you’re using the new Gmail, then click on the Settings tab in the top right corner. Within this panel, click the box next to “enable experimental access,” and then save
your changes at the bottom. Once turned on, you should see a prompt the next time you begin a new email that tells you about Smart Compose and prompts you to press the tab key whenever you see a prediction you’d like to accept. As you write, suggested text to complete sentences will appear in the background of your email in a lighter text. The actual experience of using Smart Compose in the few emails I tried was not very useful, and it often only prompted filling in a single word at the end of

a sentence, like in instances of “if possible” or “is this okay.” It’s very likely that the more you use Smart Compose, the better it will get at recognizing how you write and understanding context, but I found it to be less intuitive than that Taco Tuesday demo that was shown onstage. Smart Compose is currently only available in English, and Google gives fair warning that “Smart Compose is not designed to provide answers and may not always predict factually correct information.”

How to make the most out of New Year's Resolutions
D Looking at Mirror
O
ne day all the employees reached the office and they saw a big advice on the door on which it was written: “Yesterday the person who has been hindering your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the funeral in the room that has been prepared in the gym”. In the beginning, they all got sad for the death of one of their colleagues, but after a while, they started getting curious to know who was that man who hindered the growth of his colleagues and the company itself. The excitement in the gym was such that security agents were ordered to control the crowd within the room. The more people reached the coffin, the more the excitement heated up. Everyone thought: “Who is this guy who was hindering my progress? Well, at least he died!” One by one the thrilled employees got closer to the coffin, and when they looked inside they suddenly became speechless. They stood nearby the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul. There was a mirror inside the coffin: everyone who looked in-

side it could see himself. There was also a sign next to the mirror that said: “There is only one person who is capable of setting limits to your growth: it is YOU.” You are the only person who can revolutionize your life. You are the only person who can influence your happiness, your realization, and your success. You are the only person who can help yourself. Your life does not change when your boss changes, when your friends change, when your partner changes when your company changes. Your life changes when YOU change, when you go beyond your limiting beliefs when you realize that you are the only one responsible for your life. “The most important relationship you can have is the one you have with yourself ”. Moral: The world is like a mirror: it gives back to anyone the reflection of the thoughts in which one has strongly believed. The world and your reality are like mirrors lying in a coffin, which show to any individual the death of his divine capability to imagine and create his happiness and his success. It’s the way you face Life that makes the difference.
id you look forward to the holidays for a short rest to recharge your batteries, reflect upon your business and then start planning for the new year? Many of my clients share that they enjoy the short break, but then harsh reality of life quickly sets in, and they complain about being tired, overworked and burned out. Can you relate? Most entrepreneurs and executives have high-performance expectations for themselves and can feel disappointed with their lack of progress regarding their health, relationships and their revenues after reflecting upon the past year. That's when we are now convinced that something's gotta change, right? Suddenly, we are empowered and excited by moving into the "New Year." We come up with all sorts of New Year's resolution ideas. It's our chance to start fresh like a new baby. We get in the car and rush to join the gym (again) while setting some great New Year's resolutions for our body and our business, thinking to ourselves, This is it, this is my new year of success, prosperity and happiness. A lot of people have great resolution ideas to achieve their goals, like automatic bank transfers for saving money and a new smartwatch to help with weight loss. However, statistics show that only 9.2 percent of people ever achieve their New Year's resolutions and break free from their bad habits. I believe that New Year's resolutions not only don't work but can make matters worse. Most people live in a safe comfort zone where they have scripted their life with their subconscious mind. The subconscious acts as a recording that repeats the same song over and over again. We might be telling ourselves all day long that we want something different from our past but, in vain, our history plays back by default, and we get the same results. Do I need to remind you about the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing and expecting different results? Now that I have hopefully touched a sensitive nerve, you are probably asking, "So why do most New Year's resolutions fail? If they don't work, then what does work?" The reasons why most New Year's resolutions fail Unfortunately, most of us create too much resistance by injecting too many resolutions and goals into our minds. We write down a long list of stuff like the following. • Quit smoking. • Quit drinking. • Lose weight. • Spend more time with friends and family. • Read more books.
•
Eat more healthy food or stop eating junk food. • Learn to play an instrument. • Learn a new skill, like social media marketing. • Meet new people. • Travel more. This process results in setting too many expectations and creating unrealistic goals. We end up with a long list of trying to do everything at once, relying on our emotions to keep us motivated until we achieve them. So, what should you do instead of making New Year's resolutions? Change just one of your habits that creates the most change. I discovered that making just one small change in your daily repetitive routine is a crucial step to alleviate the resistance that comes with change. Remember that real change takes time, effort and patience. According to research from University College London, it takes about 66 days to completely break an old habit, and it can take much longer to master something new. While you are anchoring this unique pattern of action into your life, you are also uploading a new program in your subconscious. To stay motivated, it is important to celebrate even the smallest positive changes. As you transform, it is very natural to experience different waves of emotion as you become more aware of how you feel. Honestly, selfawareness is the key to unlock all your potential for success. 21 habits of highly successful people What do highly successful entrepreneurs have in common? They share productive habits that lead to prolific action which translates into positive outcomes and results! Ultra-successful people like Bill Gates, Daymond John, Oprah, Richard Branson, Marcus Lemonis, Deepak Chopra and even Napoleon Bonaparte all share everyday habits that are proven to produce success: Here's just a list of the 21 habits of successful entrepreneurs: 1. They keep a journal. 2. They talk to themselves in a mirror. 3. They meditate. 4. They read. 5. They embrace their fears. 6. They know that failure is part of success. 7. They associate with only positive people. 8. They set intentions. 9. They talk to the universe. 10. They are thankful. 11. They prioritize their time. 12. They don't sweat the small stuff.
Follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/IndianNewsQueensland
13. They focus on what they can control. 14. They actively listen. 15. They enjoy money as a byproduct of their dream. 16. They don't count on luck. 17. They love having fun and celebrate. 18. They forgive themselves and others. 19. They never give up but will change when needed. 20. They don't make rash or emotional decisions. 21. They listen to their intuition. Hopefully, you noticed that most of these new habits are not activities, like going to the gym. Instead, they relate to creating new patterns for your thoughts. Once you change your thoughts, your habits and actions will automatically change, too. It typically takes 21 days to shift into a new gear, so don't give up! In his bestselling book PsychoCybernetics, author Dr. Maxwell Maltz says the "human mind takes almost exactly 21 days to adjust to a major life change." Even though his research was originally on traumatic life events, he claims the principle applies "universally" and works just as well on positive changes. If you can stick with it for only 21 days, you will have an excellent chance to succeed in achieving your goal because you changed just one habit. Commitment is key! You can do anything for 21 days, right? Don't worry if you fail for that day, just keep going to the next day and the next day after that. Remember to celebrate your small victories, so you train your subconscious brain to program you for continued success. Start by doing something about today and don't waste your time thinking about why it may not work, or you won't do it. Your one new daily habit will soon replace your motivation, and it will become a consistent part of your life, like brushing your teeth. The reason you are an entrepreneur is that you are far from average and taking educated risks gives you an edge. You rise up daily, make lifechanging decisions, and you hopefully perform better every day by overcoming challenges and solving other people's problems. You can do this!

However, as part of state nomination application process, certain states require financial proofs for settlement purpose of the applicant. This process is applicable only at the state nomination stage , and the amount to show varies with the participant states and number of persons in the application.

I want to apply for permanent residency in future. But now a days getting Pr in accounting is hard and points are very high like 80 to 85 which becomes difficult for me to meet that points. Therefore I am looking for another pathway that is trade course which leads to Pr. If I get enroll in one year diploma like automotive or painting and after completion of course do job ready
program during my temporary work visa 485. Does it worth and better option? Ans: Thank you for the email. First of all, to get a 485 visa, you have to complete a full time CRICOS approved course in Australia having a duration of two years at least. We advise to complete the current course successfully and apply for 485 visa in which you get another 2 years of stay in Australia. This visa allows you to undertake further study or full time employment in Australia. You can take a decision more prudently after completing the current course.

The most-grand wedding of the Season Isha Ambani - Anand Piramal
I
sha Ambani had probably the biggest wedding of the year. The daughter of Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani tied the knot with Anand Piramal on December 12 at her Mumbai residence, Antilia. From Kapoors to Khans, the who’s who of Bollywood attended the big fat Indian wedding. Even former President Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, P Chidambaram, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Andhra Pradesh CM N. Chandrababu Naidu came to wish the
newlyweds. Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh represented the sports fraternity at Isha-Anand’s wedding. Hillary Clinton and Rajinikanth were also seen at the do. While the Piramals, reportedly, held an intimate reception on Thursday, the Ambanis are today hosting a bigger wedding reception at Jio Garden in Mumbai. Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain will also perform at the “reception and musical concert”.
Deepika Padukone on why ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor skipped her wedding reception
D
eepika Padukone has finally addressed the question -- why did ex Ranbir Kapoor skipped her wedding reception. Deepika and Ranveer Singh hosted the party on December 1, which was attended by Bollywood celebs. It is over a month since Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh got married in Italy’s Lake Como and then went ahead and hosted multiple wedding receptions in India
but people’s fascination with the nuptials is far from over. Deepika, in a new interview, has answered all questions around her wedding. One of the most important, of course, being why did her ex Ranbir Kapoor didn’t attend the wedding reception. Deepika and Ranveer’s wedding reception had everyone from Amitabh Bachchan with family, to Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma and Shah Rukh Khan among others. Con-
spicuous by their absence were Ranbir as well as girlfriend Alia Bhatt. While an online portal later reported that the two actors were busy with shooting of their upcoming film Brahmastra, Deepika has now said, “We’ve not spoken. I mean, we spoke before the reception but we have not spoken after. But, that’s him. I’m not surprised at all. But, that’s the relationship we share and that’s the beauty of that relationship; so much is said without saying much at all.”
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas ties the knot in a picturesque ceremony
P
riyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas were married over a three-day affair at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan Palace. Their wedding has been a coming together of two cultures, and this was reflected in their celebrations as well. From the lavish sangeet ceremony to the emotional Christian and Hindu weddings, pictures and videos from the events have been shared online. Priyanka and Nick were married in accordance with Christian tradi-
tions on Saturday, in a ceremony officiated by Nick’s father, Paul Kevin Jonas Sr. Priyanka and Nick were dressed in Ralph Lauren ensembles, as were their bridesmaids and groomsmen. A fireworks display was organized, followed by a multi-cuisine dinner. A second wedding ceremony, this time in accordance with Hindu traditions, was held on Sunday at the same venue. But before that, a traditional ‘choora’ and ‘haldi’ ceremony was held at around 12:30 pm, ac-
cording to the Mirror. Women wore bracelets embossed with the initials ‘NP’ while the men wore broaches. Priyanka, 36, wore a red sari, while Jonas, 26, was dressed in a traditional outfit and turban. Nick arrived on a ‘ghodi’ and with a full ‘baaraat’. The two-hour wedding ceremony was followed by lunch. An after party that went on till the early hours of the next day was organized. The couple have organized receptions in different cities during the month.
water in Delhi at those extravagant weddings, which could even shake GDP numbers. We are talking about us — fingers hurting and eyes watering — as we scroll down the photos and videos of these celebrity weddings. And then, we bumped into the photos of the wedding of badminton players Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap. Finally, we derived that panacea, the perfect salve, we were looking for to recover from the injuries the wed-
dings of this season have inflicted on us. Their wedding was a private function, but since some recently held sangeets have redefined what a 'private affair' apparently can be, we couldn't believe our eyes when we saw a simple photo of the duo — nothing but a red garland standing out in the photo. It was love at very first sight — and at that very sight, we conferred on this 'badminton wedding' the award of the best wedding of the year.

aina's shaadi to Parupalli Kashyap was everything so many others weren't. Quiet, graceful, dignified, funny, and all about two people in love. Silence is golden. That gold may not be so valuable in the bullion market, but it is precious to a soul tired of the glitzy, big-budget and wasteful weddings we have recently seen in a seemingly unending blingy baraat. THE MAGICAL SHEN YUN EXPERIENCE
S
hen Yun presents five thousands years of Chinese civilisation in a live performance on stage. Through classical Chinese dance, breathtaking music and gorgeous costumes, the show introduces an ancient world once lost. In February and March, the performance will be returning to Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and if previous years are any indication, tickets will go fast. Shen Yun Performing Arts is a nonprofit company based in New York. It was formed in 2006 by artists from around the world who came together with a mission – to show the world what Chinese culture once was. In China, this traditional culture has been devastated over 70 years of communist rule. In fact, Shen Yun is not even allowed to perform in China today. Worldwide, the company gave 500 performances in 150 cities last season alone. Across the Australia, United States and other parts of the world, its performances were regularly sold-out. What makes Shen Yun so popular and inspiring? The name Shen Yun means, “The beauty of divine beings dancing.” Some audience members describe it like this: You can go to China and see it with your eyes, but Shen Yun lets you experience the real China with your soul. At the heart of a Shen Yun performance is classical Chinese dance – and this company performs it like
www.indiannewsqld.com.au
no other. This is an ancient art form with a history of thousands of years. Its explosive tumbling techniques combined with gentle elegance make it exhilarating and beautiful to watch. The performance includes storybased dances, with tales of heroic warriors, colourful figures like the Monkey King and legends that take place high up in the heavens. Other dances celebrate China’s ethnic groups and dynasties. The live orchestra combines Western and Eastern instruments, creating a refreshing sound different from any other orchestra. Each performance includes hundreds of authentic, handmade costumes. The full theatrical effect is achieved with a dynamic, animated backdrop. It is like looking into a living painting, as the images interact with the dancers and orchestra in pure perfection. Shen Yun’s artists, like the ancients who came before them, believe that art is meant to uplift and inspire. They incorporate meditation and study of traditional culture into their rigorous daily training. In their interviews, they talk about cultivating goodness and virtue. This spiritual grounding comes through in their performance, filling the theatre with a sense of anticipation and joy. Shen Yun will return to Brisbane at QPAC’s Concert Hall from 26– 27 February, and to Gold Coast’s HOTA, Home of the Arts from 12–13 March. Visit ShenYun.com for show details and tickets.
