Indian government reaffirms commitment to diaspora:

Gen. V. K. Singh to attend Hall of Fame

T

he Indian government has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to two important goals of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy – “diaspora” and “Act East Policy” by confirming the attendance of Minister of State for External Affairs Gen V. K. Singh in one of the biggest events of the Indian diaspora in New Zealand – the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame awards instituted by the Indian Weekender. So far New Zealand has been missing from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s high-octane emphasis on the global Indian diaspora. The Indian Weekender’s Kiwi-Indian Hall of Fame awards, which is the biggest formal event in the Indian diaspora calendar in New Zealand, offers exactly the kind of opportunity for the Indian government to reiterate its commitment to the diaspora in New Zealand. The event brings together representation from almost all major regional and religious communities across India on one single platform in New Zealand with a mutually shared goal of awarding excellence and role models within the Indian community in New Zealand. The major community organisations represented in the event are New Zealand Indian Central Association, Auckland Indian Association, Indian Association of NZ, Shanti Niwas, Gandhi Niwas, Telangana Association, Auckland Tamil Association, Auckland Marathi Association, Bhartiya Samaj, Auckland Sikh Society, Hindu Council, and Punjabi Cultural Association.

Opportunity to realise Modi’s dream of connecting beyond ‘colour of the passport.’

E

arlier this year Prime Minister Narendra Modi while opening the Pravasiya Bhartiya Divas in Bengaluru, had made a remark that New Delhi must look beyond the ‘colour of the passport’ to the ‘blood relationships’ that applies to all of the diaspora, signalling the intent to take the romance with the diaspora to the next level. This New Zealand event offers the first major opportunity to realise that dream of connecting with the Indian diaspora beyond the ‘colour of passport.’ Indian diaspora in New Zealand is a panoramic collection of people of Indian descent emanating from places other than India such as Fiji, Bangladesh, Pakistan, South Africa, Malaysia, the Caribbean, Africa, North America, the United Kingdom and Western Europe. In fact, this Indian diaspora in New Zealand closely collaborates across their ‘colour of passports’ to pursue many mutually shared common cultural objectives.

The Hindu Council of New Zealand, a global Hindu organisation, brings together people of Indian descent from different countries like India, Fiji, Malaysia, South Africa and many more on a common platform to jointly lobby for a long felt cultural need of respectfully dispersing ashes of the deceased people in open waters.

Commitment to “Act East Policy”

L

ikewise, Gen V. K. Singh’s visit to New Zealand is also a demonstration of India’s emphasis on the “Act East Policy.” India’s policy to build bridges with the eastern part of the globe has been an important facet of India’s foreign policy since the early 1990s, which was elevated by the Modi government to Act East in 2014. The Act East Policy focuses on the strengthening of India’s economic and strategic relations with the key players in India’s east – the wider Asia-Pacific region - of which New Zealand is a key player.

Recently, the Indian Minister was in the Fiji to host a two-day conference organised under the framework of the Forum for India Pacific Islands Co-operation (FIPIC) on May 25-26. The fact that the Indian Minister has chosen to return to New Zealand within a week of being earlier in the South Pacific neighbourhood reiterates growing geopolitical importance of the region in India’s worldview. India and New Zealand both are maritime nations with extended coastlines and their dependency on the freedom of navigation, and open trade lanes are critical for their economic well-being. There is a lot more to achieve for both India and New Zealand in improving maritime cooperation, enhancing trade and overall strategic alignment in global politics.

Buoyant diaspora ready to play the role of catalyst in NZ-India bilateral relations

P

rime Minister Modi has transformed the way India looks toward its diaspora in contribution to India’s overall economic development and acting as a bridge to the nations that host them. The presence of a key Indian Minister in this important diaspora event has confirmed that the Indian government is keen to harness the power of the diaspora in the fast growing bilateral relations between New Zealand and India. The Indian diaspora is buoyant and ready more than ever to play a transformative role in New Zealand-India bilateral relations.

The Indian Weekender

Riding the wave of disruption

The Indian Weekender is ready to face challenges that the wave of disruption is throwing at the media industry ¡¡ DEV NADKARNI

T

echnology-driven convergence has changed the way we live our lives. All we need is a mobile phone connected to the internet to do an ever widening range of tasks. Banking, paying bills, finding our way around, staying in touch, getting the latest news, watching our favourite shows and movies – the list is limited only by the number of apps on your phone… It is this convergence of knowledge, communication and commerce that is causing widespread disruption in almost every aspect of life. The largest taxi company in the world doesn’t own a single taxi; the world’s largest accommodation provider owns no property and the largest seller of airline tickets owns nary an airline, a plane or a travel agency. Disruption is the name of the game. It is incredibly democratising and empowering to the end user, not to mention its elegant simplicity, which are reasons enough for its rapid uptake on a global scale. Technologydriven disruption is affecting almost every human activity, whether social or commercial. In some industries it is a causing change in an unprecedented manner. The stand out example of such a churn is the media industry. The ubiquity of handheld connected devices, the cheap and easy availability of internet connectivity and entrepreneurial ingenuity have turned the traditional one-to-many media model on its head. Today, the media consumer is on an even technological keel as the media publisher or broadcaster. The mobile phone is capable of

doing everything that a traditional media house can do. Traditional media houses are thinking hard to ride this at once frightening and exciting wave of disruption without coming a cropper. While some are trying to build pay walls, others are trying to merge and cooperate rather than compete. Still others are trying to add allied businesses to their media offering with such virtual products as community platforms, auction websites, making opportunities available for their readership to make money, bundling entertainment platforms and even getting into the business of providing communication infrastructure like fibre. No media house has come up with a successful model for commercial success as yet. The churn hasn’t peaked and it is too early to predict what will emerge as a successful formula for the media enterprise of the future.

While the larger media organisations have been trying hard to find the sweet spot, smaller ones have been doing their own thing as well. Starting out eight years ago as a paper-only fortnightly, The Indian Weekender was quick to add on online and mobile platforms within a year of its founding, showing rare farsightedness for a small start-up niche community publication. Over the years it carefully honed its content offering, building increasing avenues to interact with its impressively growing audiences. All the while Indian Weekender has kept itself abreast of all developments in media and content delivery models both technologically and commercially. Just over the past year, it has invested heavily both in infrastructure and time for setting up systems to gauge audience preferences and reactions to almost all its content in real time.

This has enabled it to continuously fine tune its content resulting in ever improving statistics that has delighted both readers and advertisers. For a media outlet of its size and scope, the The Indian Weekender management has in some ways been going neck-and-neck with developments in the larger media landscape, albeit restricted to its core audience, which is the Kiwi-Indian. With this strategy, it has nearly saturated the Kiwi-Indian demographic in New Zealand making it the go-to media outlet to reach the community. This is borne out by statistics across several comparative parameters. What’s more, as in the larger scenario of disruption, The Indian Weekender is now poised to integrate its audience’s communication, entertainment and business interests into one growing platform of knowledge, content and commerce. It has already launched a ticketing platform called www.ticketbazaar.co.nz for Indian events. Plans to launch new E-Commerce platform www.dealbazaar.co.nz is also underway and is almost ready to be launched. Another initiative - a pullout called Property Bazaar is being inaugurated in this anniversary special edition of the newspaper. Most importantly, The Indian Weekender has developed the desirable habit of keeping its ears close to the ground, listening to what the community’s knowledge, information and entertainment needs are and addressing those with the right content and delivery platforms. Clearly, The Indian Weekender is up for any challenges that the wave of disruption will throw at the media industry in the short term.

Historic ‘Gajaraj Sthapna’ at Bhartiya Mandir:

Four important things to know ¡¡ SANDEEP SINGH

B

hartiya Mandir – the oldest and the largest Hindu Temple in New Zealand – installed two elephant deities, symbolised as “Dwarpal” in Hindu architecture, just at the entrance of the temple in a religious ceremony on Sunday, June 4. The elephants have a unique place in the Hindu traditions. In addition to providing a means of transport, they symbolically represent a divine attribute. The elephant vāhana represents wisdom, divine knowledge and royal power; it is associated with Lakshmi, Brihaspati, Shachi and Indra. Lord Indra was said to ride on a flying white elephant named Airavata, who was made the King of all elephants by Indra. A white elephant is rare and given special significance. The two elephant deities each weighing 1.5 tonnes were installed with the help of specially commissioned cranes early morning on Sunday. The official unveiling of both the deities was preceded by pooja and yajna organised in the main sanctum of the temple. There was a huge gathering of devotees and members of the

community attending the religious ceremony. Speaking to The Indian Weekender, the Mandir President Hemant Parashar said that it was a historic day for the temple for many reasons. “In our Hindu tradition, elephant or Gajaraj is considered as Dwarpaal – the gatekeeper - and an integral part of a temple. “There is lot of history associated with these elephant deities,” a visibly excited Mr Parashar said. The Puketāpapa Local Board member Shail Kaushal, a devotee of the temple himself, was invited to officially inaugurate the deities after a small pooja by the Mandir priest.

The elephants have a unique place in the Hindu traditions... The elephant vahana represents wisdom, divine knowledge and royal power; it is associated with Lakshmi, Brihaspati, Shachi and Indra.

Holy Trinity Cathedral creates history, hosts Iftar for Muslim community ¡¡ RIZWAN MOHAMMAD

T

he Holy Trinity Church in Parnell, defying the negative attention drawn toward the Muslim community across the world, hosted an Iftar party for the ShiaMuslim community of Auckland on Queen’s Birthday, Monday, June 4. More than 200 members of the Shia Muslim community of different nationalities attended the Iftar party in the church hall premises followed by a brief address by the Church and the representatives of the Shia Muslim community. The Holy Trinity Cathedral is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Auckland. It is situated on the ridge in Parnell, overlooking the waters of the Waitemata Harbour, the Cathedral is a place of worship, gathering, music, the arts, and learning, and is rich in New Zealand art and sculpture. The iftar was hosted under ‘The Common Word’ annual activities jointly organised by the Cathedral and Shia Muslim – Christian Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. The first Common Word Seminar was held at Auckland University in 2013. In the month of Ramadan observant Muslims fast during daylight hours. The fast is broken at sunset each night with a large meal called an Iftar. Muslims are urged to

invite others to break the fast with them. The Iftar is an opportunity for non-Muslims to get to know their Muslim neighbours. The evening commenced at 5:30 p.m. with the call for prayer while the visitors stationed themselves inside the cathedral. The visitors were offered dates, as a customary practice to break the fast. The church arranged a special hall for the visitors to offer their prayers (salah) and followed by dinner. “We offered our Salah in the church premises; this is so wonderful. Islam is the religion of brotherhood and events as such show how we can bond with other faiths and beliefs and work toward one goal, that is making this world a better place to live,” Waqar Taqvi, a member of the

Shia-Muslim community said. Rakesh Naidoo representing the Human Rights Commission of New Zealand and Phil Goff, the Mayor of Auckland and Ethnic Liaison Officer for Auckland City District Inspector Robert Stanton were invited to the Iftar party. They addressed the gathering of the Shia-Muslim community and the Christian community present at the historic event. Noting that ‘Christian witness in a pluralistic world includes engaging in dialogue with people of different religions and cultures (cf. Acts 17 2228)’ the Inter Diocesan Ecumenical Group encouraged Anglicans throughout New Zealand to consider building bridges with their Muslim neighbours by hosting an Iftar meal at parish facilities. The post dinner address inside the cathedral commenced with reciting

the verses of the Holy Quran and the Bible that conveyed the message of brotherhood and peace and the oneness of God. “This was a historic event for New Zealand and Auckland, and it was a touching moment for many participating as we met as friends,” Reverend Ivica Gregurec from the Holy Trinity Church said. “Diversity in our country has come rich, and it should never divide us. What happened last week in London, in Kabul and Manchester, is appalling. And I say this in confidence that nowhere in the Quran or in the Bible is it written to take lives of the innocent,” Mr Goff said addressing the attendees at the Cathedral. “I believe that in this city and this country we can set the example of love and peace for the world. Ramadan Mubarak to all,” he added.

Respectfully dispersing ashes of the deceased:

A long felt cultural need of NZ Hindus T ¡¡ SANDEEP SINGH

he long felt cultural need of Hindus living in New Zealand of respectfully dispersing ashes of their loved ones in open water received a major boost last week when a submission made to Maori Select Committee in this regard was accepted for further action. Indeed, this is a step forward in a long drawn out process where several Hindu community groups have been putting together concerted efforts since the past few years to seek a favourable legislative intervention in a mutually amicable manner to an otherwise emotionally contested issue. “We are waiting to hear on the Hindu community submission to the Maori Affairs Select Committee,” says Selva Ramasami of Wellington Hindu Council. The Wellington Hindu community in close association with the Hindu Council of New Zealand has long been leading a consultative process on behalf of the larger wider Hindu community in New Zealand to get an amicable and mutually acceptable solution that reconcile cultural needs of both the communities.

What is the saga about?

A

ccording to the 2013 Census, Hinduism is the second largest and fastest growing religion in New

Zealand after Christianity with about 89,000 adherents. It is expected that the actual numbers would have swelled since then. The settlement of Hindus in New Zealand dates back to the arrival of sepoys (Indian soldiers) in the 19th century, with the first communities from the Punjab and Gujarat arriving in the 1890s. Until the 1980s almost all Hindu migrants came from Gujarat. Later they arrived from all over India and from elsewhere, including Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Fiji and South Africa. Like all migrants around the world, Hindus also brought with them the cultural artefacts that were

According to the 2013 Census, Hinduism is the second largest and fastest growing religion in New Zealand after Christianity with about 89,000 adherents

important for them for the emotional and spiritual wellbeing in their new chosen homeland. Subsequently, like everywhere else in the world the Hindu settlers in this Land of the Long White Cloud – New Zealand – have had to campaign and lobby for getting their individual cultural practices accepted in public spaces and public life of their newly adopted home. Like everywhere else in life, not all endeavours are equally successful as some causes are bigger than others and in Winston Churchill’s famous words require “blood, toil, tears and sweat.” Fortunately though, in New Zealand not all struggles of new migrants have required literally what Churchill meant by blood, toil, tears and sweat. Nevertheless, some struggles have been longer than others and deserve merit of public recognition and an acknowledgement of those individuals and community organisations that have borne the burden of waging the campaign on behalf of the entire community. This is the saga of the incremental progress of Hindu aspirations of the long felt cultural need of being able to disperse the ashes of their loved ones in a respectful and dignified manner in New Zealand. Not to mention that dispersing ashes in open waters is

also a cultural need of members of the Sikh community, another religion emanating from India.

The problem – absence of legislative clarity on dispersal of ashes in open waters

T

he fact that the age old Hindu practice of dispersing ashes of their loved ones in a culturally appropriate manner in open waters is contested, especially by Maori, who find the practice detestable exactly for the same reasons – emotional and cultural – is not new altogether. The practice of releasing ashes into flowing water is considered as purifying ritual among Hindus, whereas this custom offends Maori, for whom water is both a life-giving force and valued food source that must be sustained. To be fair to New Zealand’s legislative system, there is no current law at the moment that necessarily allows or stops Hindus from dispersing ashes of the deceased people in open waters. Although there is a requirement to get permission from the local council before scattering ashes in parks and other public places. The current state of play on this issue is a bit ambiguous with not much clarity if dispersal of ashes is

allowed in a respectable and dignified manner in New Zealand. As a consequence, there have been many instances where Hindu Council of New Zealand have been approached by the local council about the sighting of pooja items including red and white clothes, flower garlands, burnt cartons, coconuts, etc. on beaches – a situation of discomfort even for the Hindu Council. “The council have also decided to stop any pooja item being dispersed at Waikowhai beach where previously we had an official designated site adding to the confusion,” Vinod Kumar, the President of the Hindu Council said.

t is this innate desire to be able to disperse ashes of our loved ones in a respectful and dignified manner that has driven the Wellington Hindu Association and the Hindu Council of New Zealand to seek an appropriate legislative intervention, though in mutual consultation with the Iwi and Maori Tikianga. It all started from April 04, 2011 when a group of Wellington Hindu community leaders including Sourirajan Venkatachari, Rajiv Chaturvedi, Jagdish Prasad, Kamil Lakshman and Selva Ramasami held a discussion with the Hutt City Council to put forward a request about community’s aspirations.

It was followed by Hindu Council of NZ Second Wellington Regional Hindu Conference on April 9, 2011, where the community’s need for a dignified farewell to the deceased according to the traditional practice of dispersal of ashes was presented in the light of the then review of the Burial and Cremation Act of 1964. As Maori and Hindu viewpoints were brought together on a discussion table, creative solutions to differing practices emerged. In the interim, a comment from Warahi Paki, Chairman of Waikumete’s Urupa Committee was welcomed by the representatives of the Hindu community for a possibility of reconciling mutually competing expectations. “I don’t see too much problem with the dispersal of ashes out at sea – the ocean is quite big,” Mr Paki had said. Meanwhile, Auckland Council had proposed Cemeteries and Crematoria By-law 2014 which invited some resentment about the expectations imposed on the members of Hindu community. Following this lead, along with

prevailing collective desire within the community, the Wellington Hindu community met the Law Commission on December 4, 2014, to highlight the lack of guidance on the disposal of ashes of cremated bodies. The Law Commission had taken a note of the ambiguity in the law by commenting that the scattering of ashes should not be restricted under the statute. This means that the scattering of ashes should not be the subject of a statutory offence. It was recommended that given the competing interest at play and the impracticality of enforcing a restriction, it should be for individual local authorities after consultation with iwi, to develop guidelines for the scattering of ashes in their region. The representatives from the Hindu community have approached Maori Affairs Select Committee with a plea that lack of guidelines may not be the ideal situation for the Hindu community to perform their cultural obligation in a respectful and dignified manner. The key emphasis was to develop policies and guidelines at the national level for the Regional and Local Council’s engagement with iwi around the country for the immersion of ashes in the waterways. The first written submission was made to the Select Committee on June 27, 2016.

The current state of play on the issue

O

n April 5, 2017, representatives from Hindu community have appeared for an oral submission to

the inquiry into whanau access to and management of Tupapaku, which was a follow-up of a previously made written submission of the recommendation to the Maori Select Committee on May 16. The committee has accepted the submission and will report back to the Minister for further action as is the standard practice with every other Parliament Select Committee. The Minister is further required to take a decision within three months of receiving the report from the Select Committee. The Select Committee, however, is not limited by any such time-constrains to report back to the Minister or take any immediate actions. The Hindu community in New Zealand is hopeful of a positive outcome soon. “We are working towards getting an official approval to disperse cremated ashes in the sea. “We have made submissions and will keep everyone informed,” President of the Hindu Council Mr Kumar said, being hopeful of a positive outcome from the

submission to the Select Committee. Kamil Lakshman, who has been an integral part of the Wellington Hindu community driving for a legislative change is also hopeful of a favourable outcome of the legislative process. “It will mean a great deal for our Hindu community to have the ability to disperse ashes into the river or sea without it being an offence. “If this Bill is passed it will mean our community has been given a legislative right compared to the present situation,” Ms Lakshman said. “I personally will be delighted to have a positive outcome from the Committee. “This will be a great tribute to late Dr Rajiv Chaturvedi who has been very much involved in this process from the beginning,” Mr Ramasami said.

The promise of lobbying in Parliament

M

eanwhile, speaking with Indian Weekender, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, the first Kiwi-Indian MP and the Chairperson of the Law and Order Select Committee has assured of further lobbying on this sensitive issue in Parliament. “This is an excellent example of the Indian community’s successful engagement with the law-making process in New Zealand. “I can assure everyone that I will be personally lobbying for this important matter for our communities in Parliament,” Mr Bakshi told The Indian Weekender.

Two burglaries, two neighbourhoods, same outcome:

Victims expecting more from NZ Police T ¡¡ SANDEEP SINGH

wo burglaries reported in the community over last week where homeowners lost their gold and jewellery are not satisfied with the police response and the promise to attend crime scenes in reasonable time. In July 2016, the Police Minister Judith Collins had announced that the police would attend every burglary thus changing it from “volume crime” to “priority offence.” Om Prakash Garg, 59, who lives with his wife and two kids in Papakura, South Auckland was surprised, though not much concerned initially, to find the door of the bedroom locked on the night of Thursday, June 1, after returning from work. They have been living in the house for the past many years and believed it to be a safe neighbourhood. However, Mr Garg could not hold his nerve for long as the family had stored a substantial collection of gold jewellery bought locally and from India for their daughter’s forthcoming wedding in a locker in that bedroom. Mr Garg peeked through the window from outside only to find the room in chaos with everything jumbled and messed up. Immediately he called his wife to confirm if they had left the room messy as the family was expected to go out to a local temple earlier in the

Om Prakash Garg

evening, only to be disappointed and to realise the family’s worst fears that the inevitable had happened – the house had been burgled. Mr Garg is a self-employed accountant, his wife owns a beauty business, and the family has been working and saving hard for their daughter’s wedding. “All our gold jewellery worth $6070,000 has gone just in one night,” a visibly frustrated Mr Garg told Indian Weekender. “Only $28,000 worth of jewellery was insured as we have been slightly casual in getting everything insured. “It’s not just financial loss. Rather there was an enormous emotional value attached to that jewellery as much of it was inherited down generations in the family,” Mr Garg gasped. However, it is not just about the misfortune of burglary that is

affecting the Garg family. The police response, the family says, has left them short of their expectations. “We reported this incident to police on Thursday night itself, and given the fact that there was another incident of burglary in a neighbour’s house the same morning when police has arrived on the scene, we were also expecting police to come at our place,” Mr Garg said. “On the contrary, we were advised over the phone not to touch anything till the investigative officer (fingerprint experts) arrive next day. “The fingerprint expert arrived the next day but we are not satisfied with our entire experience with the police. “The police is saying that with the report of crime and collection of fingerprints it is the end of the story,” Mr Garg said. “It is not end of the story for our family. We have worked hard for our wealth only to lose it just when we needed it the most and the police is not even considering it worth to come to the scene and investigate properly,” Mr Garg said. “Our family has not slept in our home since the last three nights because we are too scared as burglars had been able to enter in our property without any fear of consequences.” Mr Garg complained.

nother young couple, Kashish Bakshi and Alka Rani, is living in fear in Epsom when they found their home disturbed on Friday night last week. Mrs Bakshi was the first of the two to arrive home on Friday evening only to find that their house in a chaotic mess, with drawers and bags left open. Her first port of call obviously was her husband who works as a chef and usually finishes late in the night to confirm their worst fear that their house had been burgled. Mrs Bakshi was too shocked to handle the situation alone and she sought help from a family friend living next door. The lady neighbour joined Mrs Bakshi in calling the police, expecting some immediate help to arrive soon.

However, the response from there was less than the expectation of the couple. “We tried calling police two and three times till midnight hoping somebody would arrive on the scene, only to be told that nothing is going to happen until tomorrow,” a visibly anguished Mr Bakshi told The Indian Weekender. “The fingerprint expert arrived the next day and asked us to remain outside the house while they collect fingerprints. “That’s all police has done so far. “What about assuaging our fears that this will not happen again? We have not been able to sleep in the house since last three nights. “The burglars are walking free out there without any fear that police is hunting for them,” Mr Bakshi said.

Sri Chinmoy Peace Run celebrates its 30th anniversary in Christchurch

The Indian Weekender

The Canterbury Muslim Community Trust hosts its first iftar

¡¡ GAURAV SHARMA

T

he New Zealand leg was organised between May 2—12, and covered Hamilton, Putaruru, Rotorua, Taupo, Napier, Hastings, Masterton; it started in Mt Maunganui in Tauranga and culminated at Wellington. On June 4, 21 runners from the Sri Chinmoy Centres of New Zealand and abroad, including from Russia and South Africa, gathered at the Lotus-Heart Vegetarian restaurant in the Garden City to mark the 30th anniversary of the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run which was, for a number of years, known as the World Harmony Run. A unique initiative in many ways, the Run, which was founded by Sri Chinmoy in 1987, is a global relay seeking to inspire the creation of a more peaceful world with its motto ‘Peace begins with me’, informed Niryana, the New Zealand coordinator of the Run. “Since last 30 years, the Run has been to more than 140 countries around the world. The torch that we run with and pass from hand to hand represents humanity’s aspirations, hopes and dreams for peace. We visit renowned heritage and cultural sites, many recognised by UNESCO,

to encourage people to experience the values and culture of others. We are also welcomed in churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other places of worship, fostering the feeling of universal oneness,” he added. An important part of the Run are the school visits, and during this year’s New Zealand leg which took place between May 2 and 12, from Tauranga to Wellington, the runners visited over 20 schools, including the Peterhead School in Hastings, St Mary’s Catholic School in Tauranga, and Marewa School in Napier. “Our school programme typically lasts 45 minutes and includes a simple introduction to the Peace Run. It also includes music and a chance for the children and staff to hold and run with the Peace Torch within the school grounds. This is a fun and memorable experience for students which contributes to

ideals of physical fitness, positive values, global awareness and peace,” explained Mr Niryana. The organisers were also very delighted that this time over six mayors, couple of deputy mayors, and several councillors took part in the Run. Notable ones were Councillor Andy Foster from the Wellington City Council, Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule and Deputy Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst, and Councillor Maxine Boag from the Napier City Council. On the Sri Chinmoy Peace Run’s future plans in New Zealand, Mr Jogyato, who also ran the firstever Peace Run in New Zealand in 1987, said, “We will carry forward our relay torch to South Island next year in March, maybe from Nelson to Dunedin. The planning for this is still ongoing and we intend to have at least 20 runners for that leg as well.”

Auckland’s Indian streets ¡¡ DEV NADKARNI

L

ong before Kiwi-Indians came to live in them, many Auckland streets had historic ties with India Given New Zealand and India’s shared colonial past, the two countries have plenty in common. The English language, similar government and legal systems – and of course cricket! But the two countries also shared several administrators, many of them landing here in New Zealand after stints in India either to work here or to hang their boots and live a life more relaxed than back home in England. Many of these men and women became Auckland’s early colonial settlers building substantial homes on tracts of land they had bought. Many of them also helped the early Auckland City administration name the streets around their properties. Even the name Auckland has an Indian connection. William Hobson, New Zealand’s Governor at the time of signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, declared this city the capital and named it Auckland, after his benefactor George Eden, the Earl of Auckland, who was at the time the Viceroy in India (18361842). His successor Henry Hardinge (Indian Viceroy 1844-48) also has a road named after him in Auckland. The town of Bombay and the Bombay Hills to the southeast of Auckland are named after an eponymous vessel after the city of Bombay in India that brought in settlers to the region in 1863. Almorah is a picturesque hill station in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand and Gilgit is a town in Kashmir. Both have lent their names to streets in Epsom, thanks to Colonel Arthur Morrow, who served for many years in the Indian Army in and around those Indian towns. Incidentally, Kashmir Road in Glen Eden also takes its name from India’s northern most state, apparently the work of another retired army official who worked in that state and settled down in West Auckland. A road in Mangere, originally called Fourth Avenue, was later changed to Ganges, after a ship that took its name from the great Indian river, which brought immigrants from Europe after World War-II. An earlier vessel of the same name also brought in settlers in the 1860s. Also taking its name from a migrant ship named after India’s great mountain range is Himalaya Crescent in Lynfield. There is also a Himalaya Drive in Pakuranga, but thought to derive its name from an earlier vessel of the same name. Khandallah Place in the Avondale-New Windsor area takes its name from a popular western Indian hill station between the cities of Mumbai and Pune that was a holiday haunt of the colonials. A suburb in Wellington also has the same name, though spelt slightly differently. Khyber Pass Road in Newmarket is named after the famous mountain pass of the same name, once a part of undivided India connecting to Afghanistan. According to some city historians, military personnel were deployed to blast through the rock while building the road, reminiscent of the building of the original Khyber Pass by the Indian Army’s 58th Regiment. Tucked away in Blockhouse Bay is Lucknow Place, named after the historic capital of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It was so named relatively recently in 1967. Ellerslie’s Malabar Drive takes after a ship that brought in migrants to New Zealand and Australia. Unfortunately it was wrecked off the Sydney coast and that area is now a suburb called Malabar as well. Malabar is a coastal area in the beautifully

lush southern Indian state of Kerala. India’s eastern Himalayan state of Sikkim has lent its name to a street in Manukau while another in Titirangi, Tagor Street, appears to have been named after one of India’s greatest litterateurs, the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The bustling town of Surat, in western India’s Gujarat state, famous for its diamond trade, finds itself in a street name in Glen Eden. Named so after a ship that brought in immigrants in 1864. Even a plant with an Indian name, though a poisonous variety, has a street named after it. Mairangi Bay’s Datura Street is named after the Finally, in March this year a new development in Papatoetoe was named Deepak Lane, which was proposed to the local board by its Indian origin developer.

The red herrings

S

ome Indian-sounding names of Auckland streets are not really Indian Korma Road in Mount Roskill has nothing to do with the popular Indian dish. It is named after a gentleman called Korman who ran a fabric mill in the area. Moira in Ponsonby is not named after a Goan village but one in Ireland. Similarly Salem is not after the Tamil Nadu town – rather it’s after a village in Wales. Glen Eden’s Nandana Avenue is believed named after the Nandina plant, also called sacred Chinese Bamboo. Rama in Point Chevelier is after a torch used to catch eels. Though Shah is an Indian last name, it is not certain who Shah place in Glen Eden is named after. Arabi Street in Sandringham sounds like the Hindi word for people from Arabia but is of uncertain origin. Arun (Stanmore Bay) and Arundel (Mt Roskill) Streets, though with an Indian ring to them, are named after a place and a river in England.

‘First home buying is a learnable skill,’ says Global Finance The Indian Weekender

G

lobal Finance, one of the leading mortgage and insurance companies in Auckland, will be completing 18 years of service to the community. Indian Weekender got in touch with Ajay Kumar, Director of the company and asked for his views on the latest developments in the property market and tips for the first home buyers of Auckland.

Global Finance offers unique inter-saver plans in which we do not increase the mortgage instalments, and we try to save interest so that homebuyers can become mortgage free as soon as possible.

IWK: According to you, where is the Auckland property market going? Ajay Kumar: Auckland property market is definitely in imbalance, which means there is more demand than supply. Although this imbalance is not huge, it is still there. We believe that many people are still looking for the houses, but there is a shortage of properties in the city. IWK: Do you acknowledge that there is a housing crisis in Auckland as reported in the media? AK: I strongly disagree that there is a crisis in the housing market. Yes, there is a shortage, but it cannot be termed as a crisis. Nobody is living on the road; everybody is living in houses. People are finding accommodation in rental properties if they are not in a position to buy houses, but certainly, no one is living on the streets. IWK: When you get clients to buy houses, what do you suggest them – purchase a new property or existing property or buy a section and build on it? AK: I advise people to buy a newly built house because there are so many incentives attached that are not available for buying existing homes. It is not easy to build a new home in Auckland as there is a shortage of skilled labour and builders to construct the houses. The newly built houses have some advantages. For example, even if you have 10 per cent deposit and you fulfil their land criteria, the banks will be keen to approve your loan. If you are a KiwiSaver holder and you have completed five years, then you can get a subsidy from Housing New Zealand, which provides a subsidy of $10,000 per person. So if the husband and wife are buying the property, they get $20,000 which is apart from the KiwiSaver. That is a big push and a huge advantage for the buyers. This is, however, provided after

We have won more than 40 prestigious awards from various institutions such as ANZ Bank, ASB Bank, Westpac Business Awards and we are the best in customer service. We have arranged around 5 billion of loans which is generally not possible for any other advisor in the country. At this time we are serving roughly 23 per cent of the Indian community in Auckland, and 18 per cent in the country and that is a significant milestone for us. We are there in the community to fulfil the dreams of the people, for them to buy a house, business or a commercial property and we are considered specialists in saving the interest on loans within their capacity.

Getting closer to the dream of your own home If you are a KiwiSaver holder and you have completed five years, then you can get a subsidy from Housing New Zealand, which provides a subsidy of $10,000 per person

they fulfil another land criterion for the subsidy which is applicable in Auckland. IWK: It is in the news that there is a rise in the price of the properties in the market, do you think there is an opportunity for people or first home buyers to peek outside Auckland? AK: The property prices have not risen in the past few months, and in fact, property prices have gone down. Whether you buy the property in Auckland or outside, you will have to meet the bank criteria. Of course, the price of the property outside Auckland is cheaper, and it depends on how much deposit you have and how much you can afford. Even if the prices rise, the interest rates are far less than what we had earlier and so your mortgage does not go up. IWK: What advice do you have for the first home buyers? AK: First and foremost is planning. You have to plan in advance. If want to buy the house in the next few years, you should start saving the money. It can be either from your salary, as a

gift from your parents and from other sources, such as selling some of your assets that you feel are not necessary. Second, you must accumulate as much deposit as possible in your account so that you can convince your lenders you have enough savings. Whatever miscellaneous cash you have it should go to your bank account, whatever money you have from your cash job, deposit it in your bank account so that lenders can verify. Third, if you have a credit card, then clear your card debts. We have seen many people having cards with high limits, and it is unused. For example, you have a credit card of $20,000, and even if you have used just $1000, it gives a negative figure to the lenders. There is no point in increasing the card limit because smaller amount or limit of credit card gets more loans. Similarly, if you have small hire-purchases or personal loan, you should clear them or keep it minimal. The lesser debts you have on your head, the more loans you will get for your house. Lastly and the most important, keep your credit check clear.

IWK: How does Global Finance add value to its customers? AK: Global Finance offers unique inter-saver plans in which we do not increase the mortgage instalments, and we try to save interest so that homebuyers can become mortgage free as soon as possible. We encourage home buyers to not to stay on their mortgage for a long time, say if the lender is saying 30 years or so, try to finish the loan as early as possible. We start our services from the date loan is applied for till the time the loan is finished, so we give a lifelong service to our customers, and that is what has kept us connected to the Indian community. We make adjustments in the journey of the homebuyers depending on their financial situation changes so that they are benefited throughout. IWK: Tell us about the growth of Global Finance. AK: Global Finance is one of the largest mortgages and insurance advisory companies in New Zealand established in 1999. We have completed more than 17 years in business.

The Indian Weekender Property Bazaar set to fill the market gap T he Indian Weekender’s Property Bazaar is set to fill the current market gap in providing enough choices to the fast growing segment of Kiwi-Indian property buyers. There could not have been a better time to launch Indian Weekender’s Property Bazaar than the current exciting times in Auckland property market. Apparently, the market is cooling

off, and there is emerging unanimity of wisdom across the political spectrum about the shortage of houses in Auckland’s property market thus raising hopes of an increase in the supply of the number of houses. The buyers are looking for more options. Kiwi-Indian community, the fastest growing community in New Zealand

which according to a conservative estimate roughly corresponds to one in every nine Aucklander is in the property market, both as first-home buyer and investors. The current options available to this consolidated segment are widely scattered. The property sellers, aware of growing numbers of Kiwi-Indians

and their equally growing pockets are looking for more options to reach out to this segment. Indian Weekender is setting out to fill this gap by creating a platform where both marketers and buyers in the community can go together to create a mutually win-win situation for everyone. In this edition, we bring out an eightpage special property pull out.

Thought of the week

Editorial New Zealand’s Indian diaspora yearns for a suitable place in Modi’s ‘diaspora narrative’

“You must be the change you want to see in the world.” – M.K. Gandhi

The Funny bone

M

odi’s ‘diaspora narrative’ - as it may be defined – is the narrative of an emotional and spiritual re-connect between India’s long forgotten children living in distant lands away from their original homeland that is the modern Indian state. Presumably, the time has come to manifest in the open about what has been long felt within our communities that the Indian diaspora in New Zealand yearns for a suitable place in Modi’s ‘diaspora narrative.’ The yearning has never been as pronounced as it is right now when one of the key Ministers in Prime Minister Modi’s government and an integral part of Modi’s ‘diaspora narrative,’ Gen V. K. Singh, is attending the biggest formal event of the Indian diaspora in New Zealand. Gen. V. K. Singh, by personally leading several evacuation missions of the Indian diaspora in distress in many war-torn territories around the world, has rightly emerged as an integral part of Mr Modi’s ‘diaspora narrative,’ who enjoys a fondness and a level of connection with the diaspora, outmatched only by Mr Modi himself. This argument is duly substantiated by an important fact of India’s 2014 national election results where the margin of Gen V. K. Singh’s electoral victory against his nearest rival was the second largest in the country. Once again, only behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself! In that respect, Gen. V. K. Singh’s attendance of Indian Weekender’s signature event Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame awards is a demonstration of a commitment of the highest order by the Indian government toward the Indian diaspora in New Zealand. However, the vibrant diaspora which had largely felt ‘overlooked’ if not forgotten altogether earlier when New Zealand was missing from Prime Minister Modi’s itinerary when he last travelled in the region, is longing for more. The desire is to get a suitable place in the Modi diaspora narrative. The central philosophy of Mr Modi’s diaspora narrative is that the diaspora is an ‘asset’ rather than a ‘liability’ and they wield economic, intellectual and political clout in several countries of the world that need to be harnessed to its full potential to advance India’s domestic and foreign policy goals. It also recognises that the people of Indian origin living in various parts of the world are generally well educated, and most of them hold professional positions or are engaged in their businesses. Many amongst them are acclaimed professionals, artists, scholars, and heads of universities and CEOs of multi-national corporations in the host countries. Toward that end, Indian diaspora in New Zealand ticks all the above boxes of having amongst them top CEOs, intellectuals, scholars, businessmen, entrepreneurs and hard working people who add value to both the host society and the original home, wielding considerable ‘soft power.’ Probably, the only missing link has been an appropriate utilisation of this diaspora in transforming bilateral relations between New Zealand and India. Setting a precedent of Indian Minister’s presence in Kiwi-Indian Hall of Fame awards The role of the diaspora needs to be institutionalised in driving this bilateral relation, and one important way of doing this is by setting a new precedent of ensuring an Indian Minister’s presence every year in this high profile Indian diaspora event of New Zealand. This annual community awards event where representatives of almost all major community organisations in the country are present along with top echelons of the political elite of the New Zealand government offers an unparalleled platform to the decision makers of both the countries to discuss bilateral relations. To many this may appear an unreasonable expectation as of today, however, for the influential Indian diaspora in New Zealand that has long waited for its turn to get its due place in Mr Modi’s ‘diaspora narrative,’ this is a modest expectation.

Meet the Indian Weekender team

Bhav Dhillon

Sandeep Singh

Bhav, the Publisher and Managing Editor of The Indian Weekender is the man responsible for bringing a new vision, energy and ambition that have become a talk of the town within the community, readers and peers in the Indian media landscape in New Zealand. Mr Dhillon, ever since assuming the full responsibility of running this ship, has done three things perfectly –giving a vision to the team, providing adequate tools to pursue individuals and collective goals and backing up his team resolutely. The results are for others to judge.

Mahesh Kumar

Sandeep is the newest member of this team and taking his time slowly to comprehend the winds of change going through The Indian Weekender’s vision, goals and multiple digital platforms. Taking responsibility for reporting, analysing and connecting with the community along with reluctantly editing the content, Sandeep is slowly getting into the groove in this new role. By his own admission, he has a lot to learn about the challenges thrown upon by the changing landscape of print and electronic media.

It’s not easy to quantify Mahesh’s (or Mahesh Ji as he is fondly referred to by the team) value to team Weekender in plain words as he is everywhere from designing, sales, marketing, distribution, writing and all other remaining responsibilities. It will not be an exaggeration to say that Mahesh has been steadying the ship during the transformative times when we are collectively aspiring to grow faster than ever before. In between taking care of his diverse responsibilities, he finds time to write his popular column Tech-mate for our print and digital editions.

Rohan DeSouza Described as an entrepreneur on a mission within our team, Rohan has for long deflected our team’s collective complaints of not being seen enough in the office by his disarming smile. However, winds of change in The Indian Weekender have not left him as well as he is forced to visit and meet the team more frequently than a year ago. He has spearheaded the planning, designing, and hosting of several digital platforms and launching of many new verticals in the recent past.

FEATURES

Swati Sharma If there is anyone in this team who has evolved in the role and the value that she brings to The Indian Weekender to the extent that could be described as transformational, then it is Swati. From donning the role of Chief Reporter to shouldering the extra responsibility of Events, Website and Social Media Manager, she has travelled an inspiring journey in a pretty short time. That might tell you about the pace and the magnitude of the shift that The Indian Weekender has taken in the last one year. The Indian Weekender’s repeated story of this year of amplifying into multiple digital platforms is aptly reflected in Swati’s day-to-day work.

Friday, June 8, 2017

Yashmin Chand Like everyone else in this team, Yashmin has also evolved by leaps and bounds in the last one year. From designing to accounting to even maintaining the news website, the journey could be challenging for many others, but not to our Yashmin. She does everything with a calm and perfection, except for Thursdays, which is our print day and nothing of this applies to Yashmin on Thursdays.

Rizwan Mohammad Rizwan can easily be termed as the Man Friday of The Indian Weekender team, who has to be involved in every reporting, video-shooting, news-writing, facebook-live, events, newspaper-distribution or any other enterprise organised by The Indian Weekender. Right now he is thriving on the winds of change going on in The Indian Weekender’s vision, goals and self-belief in extending new horizons.

The Indian Weekender

Gaurav Sharma Gaurav continues to work remotely from Christchurch bringing our Southline segment. Though seen little in our Auckland office, his passion and dedication for real and sensible journalism is not missed. Normally, it is hard to get hold of him over the phone as he is busy most of the time. The surest way of finding him is to drop a text to him raising a question on anything related to his story, and pat comes his reply, often with explanations and arguments that invalidate the query on his story. And then we share greetings, ensuring all is well down south.

Our Auckland Branch remains open from 10.00 AM to 2.00 AM on Saturday

Southern Institute of Technology(SIT)

S

outhern Institute of Technology (SIT) is proud to have many Indian students studying with us. Creating and fostering excellence are important facets of SIT’s academic and sporting goals, and students such as Pratik Vinoba Thamboor, Tashi and Nungshi Malik and Gagandeep Singh, make it seem easy. Pratik’s sporting excellence shines through on the hockey field. Having been awarded the prestigious John Wright full scholarship in hockey, he is focused on getting to play for the Southern Dogs in the New Zealand National Hockey League and coaching the senior girls’ collegiate team. Gagandeep Singh is using the knowledge he has acquired through his studies during the Diploma in Sport and Exercise at SIT, to help him with his bodybuilding. He has been carving his way to the top of the bodybuilding community in Southland, winning the South

Island Body Building Championships twice in a row and qualifying for the New Zealand Nationals, putting him well on the way to the coveted Mr New Zealand title. Twins, Tashi and Nungshi Malik are also used to collecting titles. Having studied a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise and with female empowerment the cause spurring them on, they have now become the world’s first siblings and twins, as well as the youngest persons and first South East Asians, to complete the Adventurers’ Grand Slam (scaling the highest peaks in all continents and skiing to the North and South Poles). Their achievements can be proudly lauded, but we know we haven’t seen the best from them yet! SIT looks forward to supporting future Indian students on their sporting and study journeys.

Indian-origin set to become first gay PM of Ireland

I

ndian-origin and openly gay Leo Varadkar is set to succeed Enda Kenny, who has been taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland since 2011. Varadkar was elected on Friday as leader of Ireland’s Fine Gael, the country’s biggest political party. Varadkar secured 60 per cent of the total weighted vote in the contest while his only rival Simon Coveney, minister for housing, planning, community and local government, only took 40 per cent. In mid May, Kenny retired as leader of Fine Gael under pressure from both inside and outside of the party. In a statement after Varadkar’s victory, Kenny congratulated his successor as leader of Fine Gael, saying that he wanted to extend his “heartiest” congratulations to Varadkar. “This is a tremendous honour for him and I know he will devote his life to improving the lives of people across our country. He will have my full support in the work that lies ahead,” Kenny said. The current taoiseach said he will now provide a “brief but appropriate” period for Varadkar to form a new government. “The most important priority has to be the continued progress of our country led by Fine Gael in government. I know that Leo has the capacity to provide the leadership required in order to achieve this,” Kenny said. Varadkar, while delivering his victory speech, said he was honoured to be elected as party leader. He said it

Leo Varadkar

is the start of a more democratic, more engaged and more inclusive Fine Gael party. Earlier, his only rival Coveney pledged full support to the new party leader. Coveney said Varadkar was a worthy winner of the contest and that he would work side by side with him to do everything he could to help the new leader. Born on January 18, 1979 in Dublin, Varadkar is the youngest child and only son of an Indian immigrant father and an Irish mother. The young Dubliner was 22 when he entered Irish politics. At 27, he was elected to parliament. Varadkar will become the youngest taoiseach in the history of the country at 38. The Dail Eireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament, must now vote to ratify Varadkar, a move that is expected to take place within the next fortnight.

Virat Kohli exudes calm, tames Pakistan again in ICC Champions Trophy match

I

ndia defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by 124 runs in a rain-marred Group B encounter of the Champions Trophy on Sunday. Asked to bat first, the Indians rode on a power-packed performance by the top order to post a challenging total of 319/3 in an innings affected by rain twice -- and consequently shortened to 48 overs. Further rain interruptions forced the match officials to revise the target to 324 runs off 48 overs according to the Duckworth-Lewis method. The Pakistanis were off to a steady start thanks to openers Azhar Ali and Ahmed Shehzad, who put together an opening stand of 47 runs in nine overs before pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck the first blow for India by trapping the latter leg before. Ali continued to battle on, top scoring for Pakistan with a steady 50 runs off 65 balls before being dismissed. But the rest of the Pakistan batsmen seemed to buckle under pressure and failed to rise to the challenge. The promising Babar Azam - touted as Pakistan's answer to Virat Kohli seemed decidedly ordinary during his 12-ball stay in the middle, scoring just eight runs before a superb reflex catch by Ravindra Jadeja off Umesh Yadav's bowling ensured his departure. A 30-run stand between Ali and Mohammad Hafeez followed by a 23run partnership by Hafeez and Shoaib Malik was the only bit of resistance that the Pakistanis could manage thereafter. Apart from Ali, Hafeez was the only Pakistan batsmen who managed to stand up to the Indian bowlers even as wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end. He scored 33 off 43 balls with two hits to the fence. Fast bowler Umesh Yadav was the most successful among the Indian bowlers with figures of 3/0 in 7.4 overs. Fellow pacer Hardik Pandya and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja returned identical figures of 2/43 while Bhuvneshwar Kumar notched up 1/23. Earlier, a brilliant batting display helped India post a challenging 319/3. Top-order batsmen Rohit Sharma (91 runs in 119 balls), skipper Virat Kohli (81 not out), Shikhar Dhawan (68 runs in 65 balls) and Yuvraj Singh (53 runs in 32 balls) were the major contributors. All forged crucial partnerships, played the ball to its merit and post-rain, when it was more difficult to bat with the same concentration, applied themselves to the English conditions. Apart from the top order, all-rounder

Hardik Pandya's cameo (20 runs in six balls) was also useful. World No 8 Pakistan, on the other hand, were seen struggling throughout the innings. Their fielders dropped several catches and their bowlers bowled poor length. For India, Rohit and Shikhar started on a cautious note and just when both the batsmen seemed to be settling in the middle, rain played the spoilsport. After almost a 40-minute hold-up, with the scoreboard reading 46 runs in 9.5 overs, India regrouped their strategy and started counter-attacking. Rohit and Dhawan displayed some brilliant shots in order to boost the run rate. Rohit, who was struggling initially, got to his half-century in the 19th over with a pull that went for a six at the mid-wicket. Soon, in the very next over, Dhawan also brought up his 50 with a fine shot at backward point. After scoring 110 runs in 20 overs, both sought to exploit the conditions and poor fielding from the Pakistani players. But while doing so, Dhawan was caught at deep mid-wicket by Azhar Ali off Shadab Khan in the 25th over, breaking their 136-run partnership. Kohli, who came in, supported Rohit well at the other end by simply rotating the strike. Rohit, who now seemed confident

at the crease, kept on punishing the bowlers. But in the 33rd over, the skies opened up again and play was interrupted. After a 45-minute hiatus, the ViratRohit partnership soon ended in the latter's run-out – and he missed a welldeserved ton. In the 37th over, Virat wanted to steal a single but a strong throw from backward point by Babar Azam did the trick and Rohit, who slammed seven boundaries and two sixes, failed to scramble home. Incoming batsman Yuvraj Singh, true to his reputation, started thrashing Pakistani bowlers all around. The pressure started building on the bowlers and fielders and, as a result, they dropped Yuvraj and Kohli in the process, which cost them hugely in the death overs. The two batsman forged a 93-run partnership for the third wicket before Yuvraj was adjudged leg before wicket in the penultimate over after the Pakistan skipper went for a review and was called correct. An unperturbed Kohli and new batsman Pandya played freely and started knocking the ball out of the ground. Pandya hit three consecutive sixes off Imad Wasim in the last over. Shadab and Hasan Ali took one wicket each.

DHARMENDRA considers himself a newcomer in Bollywood D harmendra has been part of showbiz for over 50 years, but still considers himself to be a newcomer. The veteran actor said he still has miles to go and things to learn. The 81-year-old actor, who is working on his first international short film Dream Catcher, added that he wants to immerse himself in work. “I think I am still a newcomer. I still have so much to learn...One can achieve something only by learning. If I say that I have learned a lot and come a long way, I will lose the enthusiasm,” Dharmendra said at an event here. He added: “I want to keep working. Work is worship for me whether it is film or at my farm.” The actor says his passion for films remains the same. The reason behind it is because he wants “to touch hearts and film industry is the best medium” for it. Revealing his secret about good health, the yesteryear’s hero said: “I exercise regularly. My soul is pure it tells me where I go wrong. My roots are still connected to my village.” The senior actor, who will soon complete 60 years in the industry, has entertained audiences with movies of all genres – from the intense Bandini and Satyakam to potboilers like Raja Janiand Pratigya, and as a comic artist with perfect timing in Sholay and Chupke Chupke. In recent times, he was seen in “Apne” and Yamla Pagla Deewana. The husband of Bollywood’s ‘Dream Girl’ Hema Malini is humbled by all the love and appreciation he has received. He said: “More than an actor, I am just a boy from Punjab, a sweet boy. I know people love me for that quality.” Dharmendra hopes his grandson Karan, who is the son of actor Sunny Deol and will make his Bollywood debut with Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, also

gets the same amount of love and admiration. Talking about his first international short film Dream Catcher, Dharmendra said: “It is a beautiful and wonderful story.” Being helmed by Santoshh Shivamm, it also stars Pooja Priyanka and Australian actor Travis Jeffery. The Indo-Australian project, being made in collaboration with Australia-based producers Rishi Raj Films and Kinopticon Productions, is written by Rahul B. Seth. The 20-minute film, which was shot in Delhi and whose next schedule is expected to be in Mumbai, narrates a love story and puts the focus on the role technology plays in a relationship. The Dillagi actor said that the film will also highlight how technology is being misused. “Machines are someway taking children away from their parents...I thought we can bring this issue into focus, and hope it will touch hearts,” said the actor, who will be seen essaying the role of actress Pooja’s father in the film. Meanwhile, Veteran actor Dharmendra said he is averse to the idea of a film based on his life, saying he will never give permission to any filmmaker to make a movie tracing his life’s journey. “I will never let them make that biopic,” Dharmendra said. Asked the reason, the yesteryear’s hero said: “Because my life is not worth it. However, I will keep on telling parts of my story through several other ways.” Dharmendra, 81, also asserted that he doesn’t even intend to write a book about his life. The senior actor, who will soon complete 60 years in the industry, has entertained audiences with movies of all genres – from the intense “Bandini” and Satyakam to potboilers like Raja Jani and

AUCKLAND’S HOTTEST BOLLYWOOD STATION

Marathi cinema is becoming commercial: Riteish

Ranveer Singh: I’m not as crazy as Lady Gaga: “ Outrageous fashion” has been a part of his life since school days. And actor Ranveer Singh, known for his eccentric style, says his craziest look is yet to come but it can’t be crazier than how pop star Lady Gaga dresses. “In school and adolescence, I was known for my outrageous fashion. I was the first to sport baggy jeans and show off the top of my briefs as a fashion statement, the first to wear sports jerseys, use styling gel, wear chunky silver jewellery. “It’s how I have always been. People in my school WhatsApp group are hardly surprised; they say it’s good to know I haven’t changed,” Ranveer said in an interview to Vogue India’s June 2017 issue. He admits he is a “bit far-out” with his fashion choices, but said: “My craziest look is yet to come. I think Lady Gaga is outrageous and I love her, but I am not that crazy. “For every post-apocalyptic outfit I wear, I also have very normal clothes. I call it the goalkeeper syndrome: he makes nine good saves and no one comments but it’s the one he misses that’s remembered. I wear normal clothes all the time but it’s the one time I’m feeling whimsical that gets noticed.” The actor, who is working on Padmavati, recounted how when Band Baaja Baaraat happened, stardom hit him “head-on”. “Suddenly, I was in the limelight without the tools to cope with the attention. And when you are unsure, your guard goes up. A part of that measured response was to dress conventionally. “This was to continue through that initial phase of stardom. The change, the empowerment, ultimately came from the validation I got for my performances,” added the actor, who got critical acclaim for “Lootera” and commercial acclaim for Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela in 2013 He describes it as a turning point. “People recognised that I was good at what I did,” he said, remembering a time when he went to a chat show wearing an Ermenegildo Zegna suit, Kolhapuri chappals, a fedora and retro facial hair. “I remember thinking that after a long time I looked and felt like the guy I lost somewhere along the way.”

ctor Riteish Deshmukh is more than proud about Marathi cinema coming into the forefront and says it is now becoming commercial from just being a regional cinema. Talking about the appreciation of Marathi cinema, Riteish told IANS: “I think it’s wonderful. Marathi cinema from regional is kind of becoming mainstream cinema.” The actor says that in a few years “Marathi cinema will become as commercial as Tamil cinema or Telugu cinema.” Patronage is important, added Riteish, who is the son of former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, late Vilasrao Deshmukh. “It is important for films to do well and for that it’s important to have patronage... What happens in Maharashtra is that there are two industries that have been patronised – The Hindi and Marathi industry... In Maharashtra, Hindi is the first choice and second is Marathi,”he said. The 38-year-old actor agrees that there has been a great talent exchange

So let’s judge her based on her actions and not by her clothes,” she said. Talking about who she gets inspired by in life, Sunny said: “I don’t get inspired by a particular person. That is very inspiring.”
