R. K. Narayan, The Great Indian Writer in English Only few people would identify the name Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami with R.K. Narayan, one of the greatest Indian novelists writing in English. Born and brought up in the present day Chennai, his famous works include The Bachelor of Arts, The Dark Room, The English Teacher, The Financial Expert, The Guide, The Man-Eater of Malgudi, The Vendor of Sweets, Malgudi Days, and The Grandmother's Tale. R.K. Narayan’ books are a reflection of his inner thoughts, experiences and beliefs. Through his books, R.K. Narayan brought forth the spirit of ordinary life. A struggle or clash form the basis of most of his works and this struggle dons many roles, such as tradition and modernity, old and new, custom and change and so on. He wrote on the trials and tribulations of ordinary people and seldom touched upon political issues and high philosophy. Graham Greene –R.K. Narayan’ Mentor and Friend Since the death of Evelyn Waugh, Narayan is the novelist I most admire in the English language. Graham Greene Graham Greene, the great English author and playwright played a pivotal role during the struggling years of R.K. Narayan. He shortened his name to R.K. Narayan on Greene’ advice. Graham Greene changed the tile of his first book ‘Swami, the Tate’ to ‘Swami and Friends’ and recommended it to his publisher. Graham Greene similarly worked sincerely for the publication of his next two novels The Bachelor of Arts, originally titled by R.K. Narayan as Chandran and The Dark Room. Their friendship extended over six decades and though they knew each other from the 1930s, they did not actually meet until the 1950s. His Works Though R.K.
