M e thod to th e madn e ss ‘Method To The Madness’ is a collection inspired by surrealism with particular influence from collage and photography. The collection combines hand painted fabrics, silkscreen printing and digital printing. Photographer Tim Walker has been a key influence for the collection, with his use of playful and unlikely imagery I wanted to capture this essence within the collection. Walker’s use of scrapbooking to develope ideas was also a particular inspiration. Following on from scrapbooking, I was inspired by collage and illustration artist Quentin Jones. Her work combines photography and painting to create fun collages. Using playful and graphic imagery with bold pop colours, the collection has a tongue in cheek, humorous aesthetic.

COLLECTION OF PRINTS SILK SCREEN & HAND PAINTED

S I L K S C R EE N & di g ital P R I N T I N G ‘Method To The Madness’ is a print collection that explores a variety of different techniques. I was initially inspired by handtinted photographs of the 19th Century, a process where black and white photographs were manually painted with colour to add realism to the photograph. I explored techniques of how to achieve this effect through printed medium. I digitally printed Black and white photos that I had taken and painted in the colour with acid dyes. A series of prints were created with acid discharge pastes and using silk screen printing. The collection is playful and uses drawing and mark making with pop colours. Within this collection, I also produced hand painted fabrics, with a combination of acid discharge pastes and pigment. I wanted to replicate the paintings from my sketchbooks of mark making from photographs. I also embellished into a selection of these prints to add finesse. Finally, producing a collection of digital prints that were bold and graphic, combining photography and collage.

S U R R E A L I S M A 20th century avant-garde movement in art and literature, which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images. The concept behind the collection was to create prints, imagery and photography using a creative process free of conscious control, allowing imagination to run free. The combination of imagery mixed and matched with other media, creates a collection that uses everyday objects and images in unusual places. This is the epitome of surrealism.
