WILSHIRE EBELL THEATRE, Home of Shelly Garrett's Beauty Shop It was the first Urban Stage play to ever have SOLD OUT shows in this theatre. The production ran for two years in California, to SOLD OUT audiences, before Mr Garrett decided to take it out on tour

It's called BEAUTYSHOP, the nation?s number one, urban comedy stage play for three decades, holding box office records all across the United States BEAUTYSHOP was the funniest, most successful black stage play in American history The production and its writer/producer/director, Shelly Garrett has received more than twenty-three (23) keys to various cities, including city and state proclamations.

No one can explain the success of this hit production, which exploded across the country In Atlanta, BEAUTYSHOPtickets were being scalped outside the 4,600 seat Fox Theatre for $150 00 per ticket and that was for balcony seating; all due to the two weeks of performances being SOLD OUT, before the production even reached the city.

In Dallas, Texas, people stood in long lines, at the majestic Theatre for over two hours, before performance time, on opening night, hoping the box office would release some ?house seats?or ? producer seats ?In New York City, Baltimore, Washington, DC, Detroit and Philadelphia, patrons stood in line for hours, IN THESNOW, with single-digit temperatures, purchasing tickets for upcoming performances of Shelly Garrett's Beauty Shop !

SYNOPSIS

The setting is an urban beauty salon, based in Los Angeles The ?Divas Unleashed?Beauty Shop is presided by ?Big Mama Lucille,?who spends more time trying to keep peace in the shop, than she does doing any hair Then there is the wildly, crowd-pleasing favorite, ?Christopher Rich?, the male and gay hairdresser. If no one ever gets their hair done during the two-act performance, many people will get their heads re-arranged, courtesy of Christopher Rich?s lip! No one gets the best of him! He verbally buries all comers during the war of gay jokes, fat jokes, short jokes, ugly jokes and all funny one-liners that fly around the shop, inhabited mostly by very well-dressed women Plenty of trash is spoken and the body language is anything but shy The ending of the show, which has been called a perfect ?Cinderella?ending, leaves tears of happiness and joy in the eyes of the audience

While Doris was the Executive Producer / Producer / Assistant Director of all of his national stage productions Shelly Garrett said, It's difficult to run this company without her In fact, I think she is running it now, not me With the leadership and guidance of Doris Garrett, the Garrett family and an amazing team; Beauty Shop is poised to entertain fans, old and new, with performances worldwide

Doris Garrett is now the CEO / Director / Producer and wife of the late Mr. Shelly Garrett. She hails from Bainbridge, Georgia, but relocated to an Atlanta suburb in 1992

Armed with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre, Doris graduated in 1984 from Albany State University in Albany, Georgia During her reign there, she pledged Delta Sigma Theta and Gamma Sigma-Sigma sororities and was crowned ?Miss Charm?of Albany State

After graduating, Doris continued as a model, doing runway, print and trade shows in Atlanta and New York City

Other activities included being a member of the ?Royal Passionettes?Drill Team and selected as captain, during her senior year. Speaking of crowns, she was chosen as one of the queens, "Miss Alpha Love," for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, each year of her college years. Her acting career began in 1992, when she portrayed a lead role in ?To Kill A Mockingbird?at a theatre in Atlanta However, her professional acting career first began in Shelly Garrett?s ?I?m Doing The Right Thing, With The Wrong Man,?which happened to be playing to sold-out crowds at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, during its national tour in 2002.

It was the beginning of something very beautiful and very special, she became the wife of Shelly Garrett and also, the Executive Producer of all of his national stage productions. Shelly Garrett said, ?It?s difficult to run this company without her; in fact, I think she is running it now, not me It takes so much pressure off of me, since my main concern is dealing with the talent aspect and writing the scripts.?She is more involved in casting all of her husband?s productions, as well as over-seeing both his PROFESSIONAL PLAYWRIGHT?SWORKSHOPSand his PROFESSIONAL ACTOR?SWORKSHOPS throughout the country Yes, it?s all about the multi-tasking and Doris Garrett has her thumb print on every aspect of SHELLYGARRETT ENTERTAINMENT, LLC
