WELCOME TO MEMPHIS

Designed in-house by Indigo Living, this new collection of furniture captures the season’s latest look in simple, practical and elegant pieces.

SETTING THE SCENE

Featuring dark wood, cone-shaped legs and polished-brass details, the Memphis collection echoes contemporary classics in silhouettes that are designed to complement one another or to stand alone as statement pieces.

Inspired by the renowned Danish architect and interior designer Finn Juhl, the collection reflects Juhl’s love of simple forms and strong lines—furniture that never loses sight of its functionality. Elements such as the uplifted cabinet case, tapered legs and thin solid-wood handles act as Indigo Living’s reinterpretation of Juhl’s masterpieces.

Sensing the arrival of dark-coloured wood on the style horizon, Indigo Living began researching how this material and its dramatic aesthetic could provide warmth and character to a space. “The Indigo Living team has over 30 years of design and trend-spotting experience,” says John McLennan, Indigo Living Executive Chairman and Founder. “We see dark wood coming to the forefront. We opted for a warmer dark wood to create a warm ambience, as opposed to something that was too cold.”

The angled grain of the dark oak adds interest to each piece, while polished metal detailing enhances the look of the wood.

Indigo Living’s goal was to design items that would be as much at home in compact spaces as in expansive rooms. “We listened to our customers, and were very mindful to create pieces that offered smart storage solutions as well as flexibility in utility,” says McLennan. Customer feedback helped Indigo Living decide on the

size and scale of each piece, and ensured that practical elements were built in. From cabinets and bedside tables to dining tables and media units, the collection offers ample storage. It’s also practical to use—extendable dining tables allow flexible options for the use of dining-room space. This required Indigo Living to create an unusual yet functional table-base design.

From the initial design brief, Indigo Living progressed through a research phase, followed by brainstorming, sketching, reviewing samples of colour and hardware, then finally, production—a process of six months from start to finish. Throughout, Indigo Living drew on the functionality and bold minimalism of Danish design. The collection’s distinctive cone-shaped, tapered legs and sleek details echo contemporary classics, providing a lighter, airier aesthetic that works perfectly for spaces small and large.

The vision of architect and cultural figure Tommy Pao-Watari, Little Tai Hang will become a magnet for design-loving travellers who appreciate attention to detail and bespoke artisanal touches.

BUILDING CHARACTER

Tucked away in the quaint neighbourhood of Tai Hang is a hip new complex encompassing a boutique hotel and serviced apartments—Little Tai Hang.

Pao-Watari intended Little Tai Hang to reflect Hong Kong’s modernity and unique culture, while providing a chic experience— making it appealing to business and leisure travellers alike. The development is “sophisticated yet down to earth; quiet yet in the heart of the city,” Pao-Watari told the South China Morning Post “These contrasts bring an edge to the property that we hope appeals to those looking for something off the beaten track yet accessible.”

With this in mind Pao-Watari selected Indigo Living as the interior design team to help bring his vision to life. Indigo Living was selected to create and style the entire interior of the complex, from planning spaces and customising built-in features to selecting materials for hard and soft finishes.

With an eye on global trends and local markets, as well as 30 years of design experience, Indigo Living brought to life the vision of a space that was both classy and cosy. Indigo Living ensured the project was on track through regular site inspections and meetings, confirming in person that the various elements worked together as planned and were up to standard. As well as custom-designing fittings, Indigo Living sourced quality product lines from artisan suppliers around the world, for both the hotel and the serviced apartments. As a result, Little Tai Hang feels like home—an upscale home filled with personality.

Creative touches introduced by Indigo Living helped to balance the spirit of the neighbourhood with modern design sensibilities. It was important that Little Tai Hang retained a vintage feel, so Indigo Living incorporated timeless design elements into the interiors, such

as mid-century furniture, clusters of mix-and-match picture frames, hardwood bookcases, a model ship or two, and a playful handdrawn logo inspired by 19th-century illustration.

Yet the interiors remain contemporary, ensuring Little Tai Hang subtly stands out in its neighbourhood. Corner bathrooms are finished in marble and flooded with light, and the colour scheme invokes natural greens blended with jewel tones that accentuate the sweeping views of the harbour and Victoria Park. Every design element serves a purpose: with strong, clean lines and smooth surfaces, nothing in the rooms of Little Tai Hang goes to waste.
