TREND REPORT MILAN DESIGN WEEK

There are few events as influential to the world of interior style as Milan Design Week. People flock to Italy’s fashion capital to scope out the latest designs in furniture, lighting and home furnishings. This season, it’s all about spaces that have soul.

GET THE LOOK 1

Terracotta: a colour revered for being warm, welcoming and rich. Spotlight on Fromental:

Dress to Impress

Luxurious, hand-painted wallpaper

With a passion for artistry and high-end craftsmanship, Lizzie Deshayes and Tim Butcher founded

Fromental in London in 2005. Their goal: to make the world’s most beautiful wallpapers, harnessing the tradition of authentic Chinese silk painting and the skill of its artists.

Today, Fromental creates wall coverings, fabrics and accessories that define style. Its atelier spans two continents—its creative team in the United Kingdom and China develops each design, spending a significant amount of time to ensure each panel is unique and magnificent. Artists then spend up to 600 hours on individual panels, hand-painting and hand-embroidering with fine silks. Each finished product is a work of art—the result of exceptional craftmanship.

Apprentices at Fromental follow a traditional path to attaining artistry, working through all stages of the development of the history of painting. They study 17th-century text

The Mustardseed Garden in order to learn the basic forms within nature, then practise calligraphy in order to reach the freeform, unconscious grace of the true master.

Layers of tradition also build the textiles used to create the wallpaper. In order for paint to attach to silk, the fabric must be coated with a special gum—a process that has been used in silk-scroll painting for millennia. Once painted, the silk is bonded to hand-made Xuan paper. It takes skill and confidence to wet a just-painted masterpiece in order to mount it to two layers of backing.

Artists and designers also work on developing new techniques to expand Fromental’s choices of execution. In one design, the Ponti, the mounting master crafts the shape of the design by intercutting sheets of silk to build a wallscape—a type of architectural marquetry never seen before in wallpaper.

Fromental’s wall coverings are made where painters are most exquisitely skilled at

creating its designs—in China. The country’s heritage of silk painting, the respect afforded to painters, and the desire to retain long-held traditions inform each Fromental work of art.

Fromental’s wall coverings now adorn some of the most presitigious properties around the world, including The China Club in Hong Kong, The London in New York City and Los Angeles, and The Goring in London. You can now own your own stunning piece of artistry. Indigo Living have partnered with Fromental to create a range of unique, eye-catching artworkpieces to hang in your home.

The Pedder Collection

Designed in-house by Indigo Living, this new furniture range blends up-to-the-minute design sensibilities with elegant forms and modern functionality.

Featuring natural straightgrain walnut veneer, long clean lines, and pops of texture in the form of gun-metal flashes, furniture from the Pedder Collection looks equally at home in a wide variety of apartments and decorating styles.

Each piece is easy to incorporate into fast-paced, demanding lives. The Indigo Living team took design inspiration from the structure and pace of busy, central-city living—the collection is named after Pedder Street, near Hong Kong’s busiest MTR station. Chic, streamlined design elements unite the various pieces of the collection. In some furniture items, two black electroplated stainless steel legs reference railway tracks, while on storage pieces, rectangular doors and drawers reference grids glimpsed along the railway line.

In a collection devoted to efficiency and ease, function is just as important as form. One key piece which reflects this priority is the Pedder Collection bedside table, which is compact, yet maximises the storage area within. The sideboard and TV cabinet also have a significant amount of capacity for important items to be tucked out of sight. The extending dining table allows a living room to become ready for a dinner party in a matter of seconds—the Pedder Collection recognises that lives are adaptable and compact rooms have many demands placed on them, and that clever furniture can help days run more smoothly.

The Pedder Collection’s walnut finish is designed to accommodate a variety of tastes and styles, as the wood is neither too light nor too dark to blend in with existing decor. Thanks to Indigo Living’s knowledge of wood grain, the team chose a high-grade finish for these pieces. A real walnut wood veneer was specifically selected to provide a straight grain, and this natural finish is a mark of quality.

Each item from the Pedder Collection blends in unobtrusively with existing furniture pieces, allowing it to be mixed and matched with a variety of styles for an eclectic look that exemplifies the diversity of city living.

London Calling

Indigo Living crafted custom furniture for a landmark London hotel, fitting out rooms and suites in contemporary luxury.

The Langham London is grandeur personified, perched on Portland Place facing towards Regent’s Park in the district of Marylebone. Built between 1863 and 1865, the Langham was the city’s largest and most modern hotel at the time of its construction, and little has changed—today it remains a bastion of five-star splendour, with an impressive heritage. Literary masterpieces were written within its walls, it has featured in countless films and television shows—including, of course, a James Bond film—and countless dignitaries have called it home.

The Langham was an exceptional location for Indigo Living’s firstever London-based project. When the hotel recently renovated around 50 of its guestrooms and signature suites, it commissioned its long-term interior decorators, Richmond, to revive the spaces. Richmond turned to Indigo Living to supply furniture.

Working in a star-studded, top-class aesthetic is familiar territory for the Indigo Living team. London is the third Langham property to benefit from Indigo Living’s touch—its hotels in Hong Kong and Sydney also feature custom-made furniture pieces.

For London, the brief was for crisp, clean and contemporary— furniture that felt light and modern, with understated luxury, but decadence all the same. Custom-made pieces were a must, so the Indigo Living team began by producing a series of shop drawings for Richmond to review. Following that, a mock-up of each different piece was produced and approved, before mass production of the furniture could begin.

Indigo Living created elegant pieces that spoke quietly of their quality through high-end materials and finishes. The team’s partnerships with various suppliers meant they could select the best of the best for each item.

Quality was the key, from the very first stage—ideas, moodboards and sketches—to the finished rooms. Today, London’s original opulent hotel is ready to welcome a new succession of famous guests.

DINING DECISIONS

Selecting a dining table can often be an overwhelming affair with a multitude of choices. Don’t fret, our buying guide can help you select the perfect table to play host to your family meals. 1

Space. Try to leave 107-122cm between your table and wall to allow guests enough room to sit down and get up with ease. 2

Shape. Opt for the classic, popular rectangular look for clean, well defined lines. To save space or in a square dining room opt for a circular or oval table and aim to have 6 or less chairs around it. 3

Style. Select a table that suits your style. If you have an open plan space select a table that is a natural extension of your living room. Small apartments benefit from glass, or tables with a reflective surface. If you often have guests around, an extendable table allows you the flexibility to make the best use of your space, as and when you need it.

After moving to Hong Kong from London four years ago, busy working professional Yvonne Lacey learned how to turn her Happy Valley apartment into a home.

Living in a one-bedroom first-floor apartment, Yvonne knew she wanted to put the time and effort into turning her small space into a retreat that reflected her personality, values and interests. She shared her ideas with Indigo Living’s stylist, Hamish Leung, and he proposed a series of layouts for her apartment. “His layouts allowed me to fit much more in than I had expected,” she says. “I was looking for the apartment to feel like home, and offer a cosy feel, but also be welcoming and spacious enough to allow me to entertain friends. wanted to make sure I had enough seating so guests could be comfortable.”

Hamish made some suggestions for paint shades, and together they chose gold and blue as the key colours for the space—“Very sophisticated, elegant and serene,” says Yvonne. An on-trend, calming pink was selected for her bedroom, while a soft grey in the living space was chosen to offset the polished gold finishes of the furniture. The painting service offered through Indigo Living’s Design Studio made it easy for Yvonne to visualise the finished space rather than dealing with colour and furniture choices separately. “Too often when renting, we don’t think about painting, but it makes a huge difference, and makes the apartment feel more like your own,” she says.

Entertaining is important to Yvonne, and her furniture reflects this, with lots of places for friends to linger. To make the space appear bigger, the styling team added curtains across the living room’s large double windows in the same colour as the walls, arranging made-to-order window furnishings on Yvonne’s behalf. Finishing touches suggested by Hamish included large-scale artworks and dramatic lighting. “I love how they’re conversation starters, and focal points,” says Yvonne. “I would have thought that smaller would be best—but the statement pieces Hamish suggested work so well. They’re fresh, modern and contemporary. They’re bold and really pull the room together.”

Heaven Scent

Created in-house by Indigo Living, this fragrance collection sets the mood with a range of ambient aromas developed for different spaces.

In winter, people naturally gravitate towards fragrances that are warm and calming, and this is the time of year when Tonka & Sandalwood shines—from its first notes of sweetness through to the spice of tonka beans, held together by a base of earthy amber.

“Tonka & Sandalwood first hits you with a sweet aroma of vanilla and benzoin, which is a sweet resin taken from the bark of styrax trees commonly used in Arabic incense,” says Rory Calderwood, Buyer at Indigo Living Hong Kong. “As the candle burns, the rose and tonka notes become clear. Tonka beans add a warm and intoxicating element, similar to cinnamon.”

The new fragrances are available in candles and diffusers, which have also been updated. Candles feature a new wax formula, which

increases the intensity of the fragrance and helps it travel further in large rooms. Diffusers are now packaged with 16 reed sticks, meaning that extra sticks can be added for a stronger fragrance, or fresh ones substituted later for longer-lasting scents.

As well as matching fragrances to seasons, each scent is designed to suit a different area of the home. In the kitchen, a citrus-based diffuser is advisable as it helps keep the air fresh and crisp. By contrast, in the bedroom, a candle provides a gentler fragrance than a diffuser. Select a scent you find subtle, such as Freesia & White Musk, which creates an unobtrusive ambience. “In the living room, no rules apply”, says Calderwood: “Your living room fragrance should be the fragrance that you are instinctively attracted to. It’s the place where you should feel totally relaxed and in your own environment.”

WHOLE LIVING SPACE
