Welcome to English Hedgerow, the first collection by Primrose and Mabel. I’m Jo Richards, designer, photographer, maker, mum and wife, and founder of Primrose and Mabel. After having my two children, and 20 years spent as a wedding photographer, the surface pattern design industry called to me. I needed a change. One that indulged my passion for drawing, painting, making, and one that allowed me to create things that made my heart sing. And here I am. Primrose and Mabel is named after the two kindest, funniest, most loved Grandmothers I could ever have wished for. They taught me, not only how to sew, knit and crochet, but how to appreciate the simple things in life, and how to find beauty in everything. Their passion for their gardens encouraged my love of nature, and their infectious personalities made me the person I am today. My aim as a surface pattern designer is to fill people’s homes and lives with joyous patterns that sing to them, make them smile and bring pleasure to all those who enjoy them. Be it fabric in a piece of clothing, a lampshade on an antique lampstand, or a beautiful notebook in which to write your inner most thoughts, they should all be beautiful, and hopefully inspiring. I hope you enjoy looking at my first collection as much as I have enjoyed creating it.

As children, my brother and I spent many a weekend and school holiday at our Grandparent’s house in Hambledon, a small rural village surrounded by countryside in Hampshire. Most of our fondest childhood memories include walks in the country lanes, visiting our Grandad on the farm where he worked and rooting around in countless countryside hedgerows to ‘see what we could find’. I couldn’t have asked for a happier childhood. This collection is inspired by those hedgerows, the ones that edged the fields where our Grandad worked, the ones where we discovered numerous species of plants and flowers, ones that we hid behind before jumping up and scaring the flocks of birds in the fields beyond. Pretty hawthorn, bluebells and snowdrops in the spring, celandines, daisies and primroses, my Nan’s namesake. Wild roses and rosehips, flying birds and delicate butterflies, blowing dandelion clocks, sending their wishes scattering into the air, and finding magical mushrooms and toadstools in the undergrowth. So much fun. This collection beings together all of those memories, beautiful nature and a stunning pastel colour palette which invokes the calming spirit of the English Hedgerow.
