Dear Stakeholders of INS Though I have had a long association with INS this is the first time I am interacting with you through Young Minds. I take this opportunity to share with you some of my beliefs about schooling. a)

We are known as a school with high expectations, high standards and high achievements. To support our students in their endeavours we appreciate the encouragement and motivation parents give their children at home because it has been our experience that children who are well adjusted and able to meet classroom expectations are the ones who get that support at home.

b) As a school we have a firm discipline code in place however we do not believe in punishment but in course correction. If we work collaboratively and praise good behaviour and ignore bad behavior, I am sure we will see positive results. We need to be firm and consistent if we want well behaved and happy kids. c)

We are the role models for our kids. Let us ensure that we exhibit the behaviour and ethics that we want our kids to model.

d) We are a child centered school where all our efforts and endeavours are concentrated around the achievement of each child. e) We believe that school should be a space where the child looks forward to and should be happy to come to. With that end in view our teachers ensure the well being of every child in their class. f)

I know that academic achievement is extremely important however it is not the only aspect of school. Encourage your kids to participate in and enjoy the entire spectrum of activities that the school has to offer.

g)

Lastly maintain a cordial relation with the school and be respectful of your ward’s teachers. This will send out the message to your ward that school & teachers are sacrosanct.

h) Also attach the utmost importance to school norms so the child understands the value of discipline. This will make life easy for parent, child and teacher and will translate into success for the child. On that final note I take your leave and look forward to a long and fruitful association with you. Geeta Pillai Chief Executive Principal, INS

Leisure - The key to perfect work life balance. Leisure is defined as any activity that is spent away from chores/work/school. They are basically recreational activities that support the all round development of the individual and help one to recharge ones batteries. Leisure activities vary from individual to individual. They may be group/individual activities, indoor/outdoor, they may cost a lot of money or be extremely cheap. If we are able to provide our children a safe, fun and stimulating environment in which to explore their interests they will learn social skills, build independence and enhance their self-esteem. This will lead to increase in psychological well being and life satisfaction which in turn will improve cognitive functioning. Parents my sincere request – please plan for your child’s leisure time. Let him engage in activities that he is interested in. However as an adult guide him to take up one team sport and some indoor activity that will engage him and bring a sense of fulfillment. Wean him away from electronic gadgets – If possible be a part of your child’s leisure activities at least on holidays. This will help to improve your equation with your child.

Let me share with you my leisure Activities. - Walking – improves my physical well being - Cooking – makes my family happy. - Reading – Broadens my mind - Watching English comedy serials – Makes me Laugh I also want to find time for some volunteer work. Improving our relationship with leisure will help us to reduce job stress, improve our work related skills, increase tolerance levels and enhance our decision making. So take a pledge to engage in some leisure activities collectively as a family or as individuals as we know that “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Mathematics in Daily Life

Dear Readers

Many people are unable to make a connection between the numbers on the paper and what they do on a daily basis.

Its next year already! Greetings from everyone at INS. We had a terrific start to the year. Thank you parents, for supporting us throughout the year. We know the challenges parents, children and teachers face everyday, and the struggle to overcome/handle stress to maintain ‘emotional balance.’ As a result of this ‘stress’ phenomenon, the emergence of ‘Leisure time’ is gaining momentum. Class room activities are in full swing, and the thought of ‘leisure time activities’ will lift up the student’s spirits and act like a breath of fresh air to cool their academic brows. Hope the articles and fun activities will be your stress busters.

Title: Birth of the universe Throughout the ages, the one thing that has fascinated the human mind is the mysteries that remain unraveled in nature. And perhaps the most fascinating of them all is the birth of the universe. There have been many theories regarding this and the one that finds universal appeal is the Big Bang theory. Although everyone calls this theory as a Big Bang one must be cautious, so as to not think of this as a conventional explosion. Rather it was a sudden expansion on a whooping scale. Further the big bang is not about the bang itself but rather what happened in the first 3 minutes after the bang. In order to understand this theory one has to imagine that all of the matter in the universe, and it means every single particle of matter between here and the edge of creation, was squeezed into a spot which was so compact that it has no dimensions. This is known as a singularity. Here neither space, nor time existed. And so from nothing our universe was born. In a single blinding moment, the singularity assumed heavenly proportions creating space as it moved on. The first second gave rise to gravity and other forces that govern the universe. In less than a minute the universe was a million billion miles across and still growing fast. There was tremendous amount of energy that was generated which fueled the nuclear reactions that rise to the lighter elements like hydrogen and helium. In 3 mins, 98% of matter there was or will ever be was produced. AND WE GOT A UNIVERSE. This idea had been around since the 1920’s when Georges Lemaitre first proposed it, but it wasn’t a very accepted idea in cosmology till mid 1960’s, when two astronomers Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson made an extraordinary discovery. They were trying to make use of a large communications antenna owned by Bell Laboratories, New Jersey and their experiment was being messed up by a steady background noise. The noise was constant and came from every point in the sky at all times through the year. For a year the two scientist did everything that they could to eliminate the noise including rebuilding the instrument but nothing worked. Unknown to them at Princeton University a team of scientists lead by Robert Dicke were trying to find the very thing that these two astronomers were trying to eliminate. They were working on a theory proposed by the Russian scientist George Gamov that if you look deep into space you will find the remnants of the background radiation left over by the Big Bang. Gamov had calculated that by the time it crosses the vastness of the cosmos and reaches the earth it will be in form of microwaves. The noise that Penzias and Wilson were hearing was the noise that Gamov had postulated. They had found the edge of the universe and seeing the most ancient light of the universe. The two astronomers unaware of their discovery called Dicke for a solution for their problem and realized what they had stumbled on to. They received a Nobel prize for their discovery in 1978. Incidentally, disturbance from the cosmic background radiation is something all of us have experienced. If you tune your TV to a channel that it doesn’t receive, about 1% of the dancing static that you see is due to this ancient remnant of the Big Bang. So the next time you complain that there is nothing on, remember you are watching the BIRTH OF THE UNIVERSE.

Math is all around us, even in the kitchen. When cooking a meal, we sometimes check the recipe to measure the portion or double-check the ratio of ingredients. Choosing between a cup of sugar or a half cup is a mathematical decision. Even setting and checking the timer to make sure the dish cooks for the appropriate amount of time requires math skills. When at the mall looking for an outfit to wear, we use math. Calculating sales tax, finding the right size and determining which store has the best sale are all mathematical problems. A consumer may have to figure out if 20 percent-off an item is better than Rs.20 discount. When shopping for everyday items at the grocery store, we must be able to count money and make sure we receive the correct amount of change. Saving, spending and investing money needs a fair amount of mathematical knowledge. You must understand interest rates and calculate compound interest in order to make good financial choices. An investor must consider these factors when looking for the best investments to make his money grow. Playing the stock market requires math to calculate losses and gains as the value of stocks rises and falls. When purchasing a house, homeowners negotiate mortgage terms based on interest rates and what makes the most financial sense over the long period of time. Calculating the distance and time it will take to travel from point A to point B requires math skills. Drivers even use math when choosing a petrol station, often driving around to find the station with the lowest price per litre. When using public transportation, we must read train and bus schedules to determine which train or bus will get us to our destination on time. There are many such examples that will make you aware of the significance of the subject called..‘MATHEMATICS’ Compiled by Sunita Desai

English is a funny language No wonder the English language is so very difficult to learn. I sometimes wonder how we manage to communicate at all! We’ll begin with a box and the plural is boxes. But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes. The one fowl is a goose but two are called geese, Yet the plural of moose should never be meese. You may find a lone mouse or a whole set of mice, Yet the plural of house is houses not hice. If the plural of man is always called men, Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen? If I speak of a foot and you show me your feet, And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet? If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, Why should not the plural of booth be called beeth? Then one may be that and three would be those, Yet hat in the plural wouldn’t be hose. And the plural of cat is cats and not cose. We speak of a brother and also of brethren, But though we say Mother, we never say Methren, Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him, But imagine the feminine she, shis and shim, So English, I fancy you will all agree, Is the funniest language you ever did see.

Leisure Leisure time simply means a period in which you spend doing things other than your work. It means a type of recreational activity. I like to play cricket or draw in my leisure time. I also like to play video games or just play on the computer. I play card or board games with my family. I do like to swim as well as cycle. I enjoy pleasure drives and boating. Leisure activities are important since they refresh our minds. At the end of the day, how positive one feels is important. Rishabh Jain (V Beta)

Why Study Shakespear?

Golf & My Leisure

Ability to Turn a Phrase

When my game of life is ailing I can turn to only one place- where there’s mud under my shoe spikes and I hit a 39 or sometimes 40 in the back nine- where I go to make things right and better, is also the place where I go in my leisure time. When we say leisure we mean our free time away from business, school and all tensions of life. It is the time which we take out for us to be ourselves and do what makes us happy and brings us pleasure.

Many of the common expressions now thought to be clichés were Shakespeare’s creations. Chances are you use Shakespeare’s expressions all the time even though you may not know it is the Bard you are quoting. You may think that fact is “neither here nor there”, but that’s “the short and the long of it.” Bernard Levin said it best in the following quote about Shakespeare’s impact on our language: If you cannot understand my argument, and declare “It’s Greek to me”, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you claim to be more sinned against than sinning, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you recall your salad days, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you act more in sorrow than in anger, if your wish is father to the thought, if your lost property has vanished into thin air, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you have ever refused to budge an inch or suffered from green-eyed jealousy, if you have played fast and loose, if you have been tongue-tied, a tower of strength, hoodwinked or in a pickle, if you have knitted your brows, made a virtue of necessity, insisted on fair play, slept not one wink, stood on ceremony, danced attendance (on your lord and master), laughed yourself into stitches, had short shrift, cold comfort or too much of a good thing, if you have seen better days or lived in a fool’s paradise why, be that as it may, the more fool you, for it is a foregone conclusion that you are (as good luck would have it) quoting Shakespeare; if you think it is early days and clear out bag and baggage, if you think it is high time and that that is the long and short of it, if you believe that the game is up and that truth will out even if it involves your own flesh and blood, if you lie low till the crack of doom because you suspect foul play, if you have your teeth set on edge (at one fell swoop) without rhyme or reason, then - to give the devil his due - if the truth were known (for surely you have a tongue in your head) you are quoting Shakespeare; even if you bid me good riddance and send me packing, if you wish I were dead as a door-nail, if you think I am an eyesore, a laughing stock, the devil incarnate, a stony-hearted villain, bloody-minded or a blinking idiot, then - by Jove! O Lord! Tut, tut! for goodness’ sake! what the dickens! but me no buts - it is all one to me, for you are quoting Shakespeare. Compiled by Vinaya Teacher

Golf is said to be a ‘Rich man’s Game’ as it has all the facilities one would want and need to enjoy life like a club house, exotic food, gym, walking plaza, swimming pool and much more, and all these are available at a golf resort.. One of the social aspects of the game is the 19th hole (club house/ bar). Not only are its facilities great but also it’s a game which keeps you close to beauty and nature. Beautiful courses is one of the most attractive features of the game, golf courses are some of the most beautiful places one can spend a few hours chasing a little white ball. Another motivating factor for players is the social aspect of the game. Playing around with friends on a beautiful day on a great course can provide a very special memory. Golf is unique as it can include all ages and abilities. To most recreational players golf is a social game. Part of the social aspect is the etiquette that is required by players during the round. Players are required to adhere to certain social etiquette while playing the game, which makes it a gentleman’s game. People tend to sleep or watch T.V. in their leisure time but they never realize what they are missing in life. According to new studies by doctors and CNN it is seen that T.V. can result in a bit of brain dead feeling and also it cuts years of one’s life. Whereas a sport like golf has healthy effects on your mind. Latest studies show that a good round of golf can be therapeutic for mind, soul and body.It prevents heart diseases and keeps a person’s mind stress free. Learning to set goals for your game as well as learning the best way to organize your thinking and other mental skills are things regular players can do to improve their game. To be a better player one has to practice all skills. Golf is a different game in all. Great players of tennis, basketball and football take it as a challenge to play this sport. Athletes use golf to test their speed; they hit a shot with sand wedge and run to catch a ball. Michael Jordan a great basketball legend said ‘For a competitive junkie like me, golf is a great solution because it smacks you in the face every time you think you have accomplished something. That to me has taken over a lot of the energy and competiveness for basketball’. This is what I do in my leisure time, I play the game of golf. Tanaya Chandra (X Alpha)

Leisure “What is this life if full of care We have no time to stand and stare…’’ These words truly portray the state of the world today, where most of us are running a rat race and the rest of us are simply caught in a net of drudgery. We have no time to stop and look around us. We begin our day with the tensions of work and end it with those of traffic jams and power cuts. For many of us there is no escape from this situation, but how different our lives would be if we took ten minutes off from our busy schedule to admire a butterfly, smell a flower or listen to the song of a bird. Some of us might simply like to sit down alone and be with our thoughts. The concept of leisure differs for each person. Some people like to play cards, some to watch films, others to go shopping or visiting friends. There are yet others who just like to settle down with a good book. Whatever your concept of leisure, you must derive enjoyment and happiness out of it. These days, doctors too advocate the necessity of leisure for a healthy life .leisure is also important for the progress of civilization. It is the basis of all culture. I wonder whether Shakespeare could have written his memorable plays if he had spent all his time earning money and accumulating material goods… who knows? If Newton had not been relaxing under the apple tree or James Watt had not been idling away his time in his mother’s kitchen, we might never have heard of the law of gravity or the steam engine!!! Literature Reflects the Spirit of the Age

Photography

Today’s education system revolves solely around mathematics and science. When a student is asked about which profession he wishes to pursue, the answer is always engineering or medicine. Gone are the days when people aspired to be best-selling authors or heart touching poets. It can be said that the inclination to literature is gone. It is now believed that writing and reading literature is not at all necessary in a world that requires the knowledge of math and science. What people don’t know is that even math and science are a form of literature. Isaac Newton’s ‘Principia’ is a work of literature that has paved the way for modern physics. Mathematicians such as Kepler and Pappus wrote about the conic sections such parabolas, hyperbolas, circles and ellipses. Math is now filled with the use of these sections. The people considered Galileo’s theories insane. He published his work in the form of books and people of other places understood them. If he hadn’t written those books we still wouldn’t be able to understand the solar system.

“What is the aperture?” I asked my brother at the dead of the night. We were miles away from any human habitation, beneath the silvery skies of the Milky Way, with not a cloud in sight. The sky looked surreal sprinkled with stars of varying brightness, much to our joy! Both of us were photographing star trails.

Literature has been the cause of many massive events. Many of the ideas that Hitler had were due to Charles Darwin’s and Herbert Spencers books. The famous writer Jules Verne wrote about many things which no one knew anything about. He wrote about the center of the earth and the bottom of the sea long before anyone knew its immense depth. He wrote about different objects that did not exist at the time. Inventors went on to create the objects he had written about.

The best way to learn the intricacies of this small but complex machine - the camera - is through experience. We try to understand what mischief light plays and how one can shape it to achieve desired results! It opens our eye for detail as even the most mundane scenarios can be seen in a ‘new light’ - a different perspective. And we all have our little version of it, riddled with different angles, effects, or textures.

Literature of the past has shaped the world we live in today. If we don’t give importance to literature we will lose what has created the world we live in today.

A layman’s perception of photography is ‘point and shoot’. These are the cameras of the bygone days. “All you need is a good camera” is a nothing more than a cliché now. I believe that a good scene merits an equally good technique. The features of the camera assist us in enhancing the image. The right blend of shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure compensation and ultimately the composition is what makes a photograph appealing and unique. Showcasing the exquisiteness to the world through your viewfinder is the real art.

Rohan Kharwadkar (IX Alpha)

Music Music would take a thousand books to define. The chirping of sparrows you hear every morning, the drops of water leaking from your tap and falling rhythmically, it is a mere part of what we call music. I would refer to music as anything pleasant to one’s ear, though even this doesn’t fit as an expression of what music is.

A photograph keeps a good moment from getting lost in the timeless past and as much as the photography fascinates us, it allows us to capture moments we might never see again. “Keep the ISO at its highest,” my brother explained. We were at Bandhavgarh tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh. The quintessential beauty-the tiger was walking majestically towards us. A wildlife enthusiast couldn’t ask for a better opportunity for capturing this magnificence but with the light fading fast it was tough to capture the real splendour of this creature. The change in settings of the camera proved to be very useful and I got some excellent eye-level shots.

Although just a hobby to me, I take being a ‘novel’ photographer as a challenge in itself. I relish in finding such methods that appeal to a viewer’s eye.It opens doors to a new dimension of the world. Swastid Badve (X Alpha)

We express music in various ways. We may sing, we may play an instrument, we may make use of our surroundings, or anything such. Any of these, if used properly and mastered, can make music.

Leisure - Poem

Music is a part of my life. I look at it as much more than a hobby, much more than a way to pass time. It lightens my mood; if I’m sad, it makes me happy, and if I’m happy, it makes me even happier. It also places in front of me the challenge of performing the piece of music with perfection, to which I never give up. I enjoy music, as the joy you feel when someone actually likes a piece of music you’ve made on your own is one incomparable with anything and everything else. Moreover, the emotions that can be expressed through music, from spooks to glory, are something that could have never been done, if not for music.

If in your free time

“If music can touch my soul, whether it is heavy or light - this is my music.” – Tilo Wolf, one of the greatest German musicians of all times

Few things you can do when you are at leisure.

Omkar Kulkarni (X Alpha)

My friends it is no crime, You pick up a book and have a look Or go online on Facebook. Playing sports or having fun, Walking briskly under the sun. It is all such a great pleasure, You can be active by playing games Or just simply stare at flames. Watching mickey mouse and Pluto, By the TV like a couch potato. Staring at the wall becomes fun when you are bored,

Leisure - Poem

Instead, you can play on a game board.

Oh! Monday, it’s full of homework load

You can cuddle up your cat,

Hurray! Saturday it’s playtime dude.

And settle on the mat;

Whole week we are tired and stressed, Sunday is the leisure time, oh! I am blessed. Revision and preparations or exams ahead

Or eat junk food till you get fat. Sleeping like a log; being careless,

April is the leisure month for fun and play.

Things to do when you are at leisure are endless.

Leisure time is for pizzas and toys

It is best to say that this time is treasure,

Let’s go to the fun world of animals guys.

We have just listed a few things you can do when you are at leisure. Pranjali Talanki (V Omega)

Leisure If one asks me , what I would like to do in my leisure time, I would say , I’d like to help people in need. And that would be truly satisfying. I feel that helping people is like serving God himself. I can help the needy by donating clothes, food and many other items. Hence, I would like to help the needy. I follow this dictum, and you may too: H - help T - the N - needy. Sreeja Ravi Kiran (VI Gamma)

Leisure

English and India

My Books

‘Student of Indian origin yet again wins the Spell Bee in USA’

Books are fun, books are great

‘India: Back office for many overseas corporations’

To have them with you, oh what a mate!

‘BPOs, Call Centres: New employers for the English – speaking Indian youth’

Books are my friends, so to read them I try

What has put India at centre-stage today?

“Mommy I’m bored” I seldom cry.

The answer that emerges is clear. Our strength lies in our ability to use grammatically correct English and to apply it in various fields of progress. Be it the field of technology, medicine, law, new research, Indians are at the forefront in using their knowledge of English. The global requirement for effective communication in English is being fulfilled by Indians.

Waiting at the doctor’s or the airport, is long enough For reading a book makes me feel time isn’t enough. I don’t complain when I’m stuck in traffic, ‘Cause I always carry a book that is terrific.

But a word of caution: There is every possibility that this edge over others could be lost. The student population has embraced English, but the English is punctuated with slang, colloquialisms and words of other languages. This version of the language is spoken almost to the exclusion of the formal variety of English.

“Finish your homework” from mom I never hear, I do it quick, to continue a book whose end is near Most faithful friends they are my books I love to grab one by hook or by crook So to all my friends out there, grab a book and read! Never say “I’m bored” indeed! Rachana Pathrikar (X Alpha)

It is necessary that the students learn formal English to be able to use it at appropriate places. Reading, listening, speaking and writing the language correctly with good vocabulary, will help the students in their progress. Students need to urgently wake up to the fact that reading good literature develops not only vocabulary but also the thought process. To be able to convey one’s thoughts correctly and effectively is indeed a talent which needs to be cultivated. There is no denying the fact that the English language has gone from strength to strength in India. It is no longer an elitist option but a necessity if one wants to progress.

Laughter The Best Medicine Three professors-a physicist, a chemist and a statistician- go to visit their dean. Just as they arrive, the dean is called out of his office, leaving the three professors alone. While they’re sitting in his office, they suddenly notice there’s a fire in the waste paper basket. The physicist says, I know what to do! We must cool down the materials until their temperature is lower than the ignition temperature, so the fire will go out.’ The chemist says, ‘No! No! We must cut off the oxygen supply, so the fire will go out due to a lack of one of the reactants.’ While the physicist and the chemist argue, the statistician runs round the room starting other fires. “ what are you doing?” the other two scream. “ I’m trying to get an adequate sample size,” the statistician replies. 5) The Farmer, the Baker and the Cook:

Lewis Carrol, who wrote Alice in Wonderland , was really the mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He often combined his interest in logic with his wild imagination to invent puzzles similar to ‘The Farmer. The Baker, and the Cook.’ In Carroll’s puzzles, he presents a series of statements that he claims to be true. The object is to use all of the statements together to produce a single conclusion.

While standing in a line at the supermarket one day, Mrs. Cook realized that her friends Mr. Farmer and Miss Baker were right behind her in line. When she discovered that they did not know each other, she introduced them, saying, “Isn’t this odd. Here we are, a farmer, a baker and a cook. But none of us has the name that goes with our job.”

Here is one of his problems. The five true statements are:

The baker replied, “ That really is odd.” Which name goes with which job?

The third goes to every third locker and, if it is closed, he opens it, and if it is open, he closes it. The fourth student does this to every fourth locker, and so on. After the process is completed with the thousandth student, how many lockers are open?

4) Answer: Lewis Carroll’s Logic: Shakespeare was a clever writer. Analysis; By combining [3] and [5], you get “Shakespeare was a true poet.” By combining this result with [2], you get “Shakespeare can stire the hearts of men. By combining this result with [4] you get “Shakespeare understands human natur.” And finally, by combining this result with [1], you obtain “Shakespeare was a clever writer.”

5) Answer: The Farmer, the Baker, and the Cook: Since the baker replied to Mrs. Cook, it is clear that Mrs. Cook is not the baker. Therefore, the baker must be either Mr. Farmer or Miss Baker. Since no names match the job, the baker is Mr. Farmer. From this it is clear that Mrs.Cook must be either the cook or the farmer. Since she cannot be the cook, she is the farmer. Miss Baker is the cook.

6) Answer: Solution The only lockers that remain open are perfect squares (1, 4, 9, 16, etc) because they are the only numbers divisible by an odd number of whole numbers; every factor other than the number’s square root is paired up with another. Thus, these lockers will be “changed” an odd number of times, which means they will be left open. All the other numbers are divisible by an even number of factors and will consequently end up closed. So the number of open lockers is the number of perfect squares less than or equal to one thousand. These numbers are one squared, two squared, three squared, four squared, and so on, up to thirty one squared. (Thirty two squared is greater than one thousand, and therefore out of range.) So the answer is thirty one.
