FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Dear Readers, The past few months have been very memorable in many ways. We were given very good opportunities to showcase the diverse talents of our children. It also gives us immense pride to have organized and hosted the CBSE National Swimming Meet 201213. This newsletter’s theme is Mèlange. We have specifically chosen this theme as the past couple of months were an amalgamation of various activities in the school. INS was buzzing with activity and was in a very SPORTY and FESTIVE mood. Many of our kids participated very enthusiastically and made themselves and us proud of their achievements in the various competitions conducted at the Zonal, State and CBSE level. What we have seen over the past months is that the lessons for our students don’t end with the final bell of the day. In fact, the learning experiences that come from participation in drama, music, speech, athletics, and the like, promote lifetime values that cannot always be learned in the classroom. I believe that every student’s sensibilities should be recognized, appreciated and applauded. At our school, we are taking all the efforts to help the child grow holistically by encouraging them and giving them opportunities to participate in competitions that will help them tap their potential. Field trips were also organized for children across all the standards whereby they got the opportunity to visit places that not only nourished their knowledge but also created a path for them to explore further. This school attains its eminence only through the achievement of children. In this newsletter we have tried to encompass various activities that have taken place in our school. We believe that our students should know about the rich cultural heritage of our country and that they understand the significance of celebrating all festivals. My sincere gratitude goes to all our dear pupils who wrote articles for this magazine. The success of this piece of work comes as a result of your endeavors. Even as you read this newsletter, our primary children are gearing up for another very exciting and fun-filled event which they wait for the whole year CONCERT. The creation of the newsletter provides many opportunities to appreciate the kindness and ready help of my colleagues and the students. I take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Vijaya Joshi and Mrs. Geeta Pillai for their valuable support and guidance. So browse through, relax and enjoy !

JOY OF GIVING The quote “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” by Mother Teresa is one that has touched my life. We always think of giving or contributing to the betterment of society but either don’t have the time or don’t know how to start. I had the very same dilemma, but the day we went to Chaitanya Mahila Mandal and Gurukul with Manik Ma’am made everything very clear. If you have the will, you will always find a way. Our school had organised a grain and clothes donation campaign which received an overwhelming response. We received 296 kg of Wheat, 347 kg of Rice, 190 kg of Sugar and 194 kg of Dal which we had the pleasure of distributing. A group of children went to Aashray to distribute the grain and spend time with all the people there. To see the smiles on the faces of the women and children was truly heartening. Jyoti Digvijaisingh, the Founder-Director of the Mandal told us all about how the whole initiative came into force and how it gathered support and popularity. Her story was very inspiring and truly motivating as starting something as selfless and noble as this is hard to find in today’s world. No meeting is complete without music and so we all sang songs together too. Next, we headed to Gurukul and handed out grains there. When I was carrying the bags of grain I realised the true reward of community service is the ability of making a difference in someone’s life or being able to put a smile on someone’s face. It gives you an internal feeling of satisfaction which is everlasting. I hope to continue to contribute and help the society in whatever way I can. Shreya K Nair (X Beta) Student Editor
CELEBRATIONS!
Janmashtami is the festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. In our school, there was a fantastic programme that was held with great pomp and reverence. Our Chief Guests for the day were Dr. Tarita Shankar M’am and Mr. Chetan Wakalkar Sir who offered prayers and then there were two dances performed by the students of Class X and XI. The dance showed the traditional Krishna and the modern Krishna as well. This was followed by the Dahi Handi in which children and teachers both participated and the audience enjoyed themselves a lot. This program was organized by Namita M’am and Prasad Sir.
HINDI DIWAS Hindi is our nation’s official language. It is preferred as the speaking language by most of the Indian population. We celebrated Hindi Diwas on the 14th of September. The teaching staff of the Hindi department organized a small event in which everyone was asked to solve riddles and talk continuously in Hindi for a minute. This small initiative to promote this extraordinary language was a great hit. Premchand Sir had written a poem in Hindi that he read out to the audience. Later a cake was cut to make the occasion even more memorable. This event made the other staff members aware of our rich and unique culture and hindi as a language. As they say “Joh baat Hindi mein hai, kisi aur mein nahin!”
Indira Rocks At Wizkids 2012 Horlicks Wizkids South Asia’s Largest Interschool Fiesta was held in the city on 10th September. Indira National School rocked at this fiesta. We bagged the first position in ‘Music Melody’. Scaling on the notes up and down, the Indira Band rocked the audience. Our school won two more awards for Painting and Essay Writing. Madhusmita Mallick bagged the runner-up trophy and Shreya Nair bagged the Second Runner-up trophy. I, Rituja Ravikiran - Std. X won the ‘Wiz Team 2012’ title. Horlicks WizTeam is a unique personality contest which recognizes the overall character and competence of students. I was declared the winner among many students from various schools across Pune. This will give me the opportunity to represent Pune at the South Asian Grand Finale which will be held at Banglore between 16th-20th December, 2012. I could not hide my pride, happiness and enthusiasm at the thought of moving a level up the ladder. The winner of the South-Asian level shall be awarded with 1 Lakh Rupees cash prize and a trip to South Africa. My thoughts on the whole experience: “It was the most life changing experience ever. At the start of the day I couldn’t believe I could win it, but with the trophy in my hand and the title pinned to me all I felt was Shock! Oh, yes, I could do it!” The trophy and the title made me realize what I am capable of. I made some really great friends and met some wonderful people who motivated me. I am looking forward to participate at the Grand Finale and make Pune proud. Bangalore, I am Coming! Rituja Ravikiran (X Alpha)

We added another feather in our cap, when we got the opportunity to participate at the district level matches conducted by the PDFA (Pune District Football Association). PFC (Pune Football Club) which is a registered club under the PDFA plays in the top tier of the Indian League. PFC organized U-12 Invitation Football competitions for school students during I-League matches. Some of the biggest names in football-Mohan Bagan, Churchhill, Dempo, East Bengal participated in the matches and came to Balewadi to play against PFC.
We proudly organized and hosted the CBSE National Swimming Championship Meet from 6th-9th November. There were about 182 schools and around 700+ students from India and Gulf who participated in the event. The grand success of the event should be attributed to the hard work and perseverance of Mrs. Vijaya Joshi, Mrs. Geeta Pillai and the teaching and non-teaching staff of INS, the participants and last but not the least the staff of Balewadi and the jury members of Pune District Amateur Aquatic Association who ensured that the events were conducted in a fair manner. Two stakeholders of our school, Mr. Mandhan and Mr. Diwan co-sponsored the meet. A few glimpses of the meet.

Wordpower Football Frenzy! I have never been a football fan! But thanks to my school, I got an opportunity to see two PFC matches live at the Balewadi stadium. It was an amazing feeling. I got to see the players so closely. Only then did I realize the difference in watching a match live and watching it on TV. Thanks to Ashish Sir who gave us passes at school. The second time we went to see the match, Sir took us to the VIP area! I was so happy when I got to know that I would be able to see the players up close. Not only that, we were treated to burgers and lemonades at the VIP area! I think I have now begun to understand some rules and techniques of the game. I will also try and watch more football matches on TV so that I can understand the game better. Now that we have the I-League in Football just like IPL, I will also have a favorite team now which is obviously the PFC. Arata, the captain of the PFC team is my favorite player. It was a wonderful experience and I hope to see many such live matches in the future! Adit Raut (IV Gamma)
Hands On Life I, Rituja Ravikiran, a student of class X, Indira National School, won the WizTeam Competition at the Horlicks Wizkids 2012. I recently completed a project for my final evaluation for South-Asian Grand Finale of WizTeam 2012 which shall be held at Bangalore. This project of mine carries 40% marks for my total judgment criteria. I had to do a project for the underprivileged children of our city. The aim of the project was to contribute to the betterment of the society as a whole and pertaining to education, health or social wellbeing. I decided to merge my dancing talents with my project. Dancing could be incorporated in the all the three essential elements that the project demanded and that is how Hands On Life was born. I taught dance to children from various slums in and around our city. I worked with an organization called Seva Sahayog which is based in Pune. I am very grateful to Seva Sahayog’s belief in my abilities and to allow me to start such an initiative in the various slum regions of Aundh, Baner and Pashan. Over a period of 3-4 weeks, I visited the kids and taught them dance for about 3-4 hours everyday. There were kids from all age groups. I named this project of mine as Hands On Life- Dance All The Way as it is an initiative to make all the children feel one and equal and to show that life is a journey and we must dance all the way with satisfaction and happiness. Those 4 weeks of my life were wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. The deep feeling of contentment and satisfaction inside me just made me a better person. Hands On Life is truly an incident that changed my life. I have made so many friends for life and all these friends of mine have made me a better person. These kids are amazingly talented and filled with enthusiasm. Training them was so energetically awesome. Hands on life was not just about dance; we sang, played, painted and I taught them English; they taught me better spoken Marathi too. Getting what you want is not nearly as important as giving what you have. Dancing with all the kids was so much fun and I realized that we have two hands, one to help ourselves and the second one to help others. Hands On Life was a huge success only because of the children, their talent, Seva Sahyog’s constant guidance and my school’s support. After our hard work, we staged our performances once in the slum and once in our school. Tarita Ma’am, Joshi Ma’am and Geeta Ma’am have always been inspiring figures and their words were motivational to me and the children. Hands On Life may have started as my project but now it’s a bond between the children and me; a dream to help the human race by nurturing the talent of the brilliant minds of today. Rituja Ravikiran (X Alpha)

The last bit of togetherness, the last bit as family Tamhini, at first seemed like a small village and just another school trip. But, surprisingly we all realized that it had meant much more to all of us in the end. We started off early morning at 6 am. We boarded our buses at school and met our guides, D.D, Tapan, Sneha, Tanvi, Sameer. As we pushed our way out of the hustle bustle of the city, we found ourselves admiring Mother Nature’s serene beauty. We passed through an abundance of natural beauty on our way through plush clouds engulfing the tips of hills and draped in lush greenery. The temptation to stop and click pictures was constantly on our minds. We reached our destination, where a small hut was waiting to serve us breakfast. Once done, we geared up for a mountain trek. On our way up, we were continually being fed with information on the local wildlife and the kind of vegetation in the forest areas of Tamhini by D.D. After a long walk up the mountain, we reached a sparkling stream where we all had a refreshing bath, splashed water on each other, took pictures, snacked, wandered around in the nearby groves, screamed out funny cheers with Sameer and simply had fun. Our hearts danced to the music that nature bestowed on us. The babbling of the stream, the hush winds swaying the trees, the different chirping sounds that the birds made were so much in contrast to the noise pollution of our city lives. It was as though someone suddenly just kept all the rush on hold and let us breathe for a change. We dried ourselves and walked back down the mountain to the hut for lunch. By then we were very hungry and the food prepared by the villagers was so appetizing, we couldn’t resist it another second and filled our stomachs till we could no longer eat. After a sumptuous meal, we had some time to rest before we boarded our buses again. Our next stop was a magnificent and breathtaking scenic point where we played games like “Bing Bang Bong” and “Zip Zap” with our guides. A steaming cup of tea and plate of pakodi served as a snack before we boarded our buses for the last time to go back to school. The weather was enchanting as the atmosphere cooled down due to the downpour. We danced, sang songs, cracked jokes and had a blast on our way back to the school. When we reached school, we thanked Foliage for this amazing experience and soon realized it was the very last of what we would have as class tenth. These are timeless memories which are tightly bound around each of our hearts and will remain fresh and untamed in our hearts as beautiful times of our school days. Time may pass but it will always remind us of what we had as a class and what we shared as a family. Aayushi Ghosh (X Beta)
FROM THE COUNSELLOR'S DESK Mind, Music and Magic All of us at some time or the other have resorted to music to deal with the everyday life stresses. Music offers what no talking cure can. It reaches the depths of our soul and brings about a change in our emotions and behaviour which is almost magical. Music therapy is much more than just listening to music which changes our mood. Here music is used to reach individual goals in a therapeutic relationship. It addresses physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of an individual. Almost everyone responds to music regardless of any physical or cognitive disability. Music therapy provides support in a way counseling can and also helps to develop skills in many cases. In a typical music therapy session, music is used as a way of exploring emotions and social interactions. It is a pupil-led activity. The therapist improvises music in response to the pupil’s musical playing, singing, movements, breathing pattern, rhythm or mood. There is an experience of togetherness with the therapist and a sense of being heard and accepted. It is not just a passive listening to music but an active participation in creating music, voice and use of movement that leads to the transformation that one aims for. Apart from addressing emotional needs of an individual, it helps in developing communication skills, building awareness of their peers through musical interactions in groups. Music stimulates all of the senses and involves the individual at many levels. With children, quality learning and maximum participation occur when they are permitted to experience the joy of play. The medium of music therapy allows this play to occur naturally. It is highly motivating and yet relaxing and calming. A music therapist is a trained therapist who is accomplished in the use of music and voice. He or she is able to adapt strategies to a variety of settings and across disciplines, thus individualizing music therapy interventions to meet children’s specific needs. Music is a universal language that crosses all cultural lines. We don’t need to know the language to appreciate the music that touches our hearts. Most people enjoy music and music therapy reinforces all other therapies. Whether music is used in a therapeutic setting or not, just sit back, relax and let the music play!
