Air India to Create Major Operations Centre in Dubai
DUBAI (DNAI): Virtually ruling out plans to develop a global hub in Europe, Air India has decided to create a major operations centre in Dubai for the huge traffic demand from various parts of the country. The decision to build a hub in Dubai was taken because “there is a lot of demand for traffic from the Gulf to various points in India” and the maximum number of flights operated there, Air India CMD Arvind Jadhav said here today. His statement came as civil aviation minister Vayalar Ravi said the government was considering extending financial support to Air India and discussions were going
on between the airline management and bank consortium to convert its high interest loans to low interest ones. “I may have to do the next round of discussion with the finance minister. They have made some suggestions on how to go about it and save money. They asked us to save Rs5,000 crore per year. How to do that is one question. So we have to increase the income,” Ravi told PTI. He said the bank interest was very high “so reducing it or getting moratorium is another question. These are the issues to be discussed with the finance ministry, banks
and the Reserve Bank and then only we can come to a conclusion”, he said. The minister, who is also the Overseas Indian Affairs Minister, was speaking on the eve of the inauguration of the Air India hub here today. Air India had started hub operations in Frankfurt which it closed down a few months ago. It was also looking at some other locations in Europe. Speaking on the hub, Jadhav said that because a lot of demand is coming out of the entire country so we can’t take all of them in Delhi or Mumbai and bring them to Dubai. continued on page

Coarse Cereal Expensive as Indians Start Eating Healthy PUNE (ET): Food companies’ rush to capitalise on the multigrain ‘fever’ is giving a new air of respectability to coarse cereals, once known as the poor man’s staple. The market for jowar, bajra and ragi is witnessing a turnaround never seen before as urban Indians begin to take a more active interest in what comes off their plate. Jowar, or sorghum, is the biggest beneficiary. Price of this cereal — has tripled in the past three fiscals, beating even its superior cousin Wheat in the game. Jowar is currently ruling at 34-36 per kg as against 21 a kg for Saurashtra Lokwan and 26 per kg for MP Sihor — the two costliest wheat varieties in the Pune wholesale market. Companies are launching new products every day to cash in on rising consumer concerns about health and well-being. There are now multigrain breads, biscuits, even dosas in the market. Leading bakery and dairy products maker Britannia Industries is procuring multigrains for its NutriChoice biscuit as well as porridge and oats under its Healthy Start breakfast mix brand. “Britannia’s procurement of multigrains has gone up almost 45% in the past six months, a company executive said requesting anonymity. “Procurement of oats has increased the most. Another food maker, ITC Foods, launched
its multigrain flour Aashirvaad four years ago. The product is a mix of wheat, soya, black gram, oat, maize and psyllium husk. “ITC’s multigrain atta (flour) is growing at nearly 3-4 times the overall atta market, which is why the procurement (for multigrain) has increased in recent months, said Chitranjar Dar, chief executive of ITC Foods. But this may change soon as the company is in the process of launching more multigrain products. Jowar is known for its high nutritional value. It is rich in fibre and is gluten-free, which helps in fighting diabetes, arthritis and celiac disease. The cereal also helps bones and teeth. Jowar has similar content of proteins, carbohydrates and fats as wheat, said Ritika Samaddhar, chief dietician at Max Healthcare. But as against wheat, it has much higher content of fibre, nutrients and vitamins because it is usually not processed much. “Awareness of jowar’s benefits to control lifestyle-related disorders and availability of such foods in outlets has led to an increase in its consumption, Samaddhar said. While consumption has gone up production has declined, piling more pressure on the price of the commodity. Area under jowar in Maharashtra has fallen over the years.

KTK vs DC: Kochi Tuskers Kerala Restrict Deccan Chargers to 129/7 NEW DELHI (Samachar): R Vinay Kumar took three wickets while RP Singh scalped two as Kochi Tuskers Kerala restricted Deccan Chargers to 129/7 in their IPL match at Nehru stadium in Kochi on Wednesday. Kumar took his second wicket when he had Cameron White caught by captain Mahela Jayawardene at deep mid-wicket. White hit a six and 2 fours in his 34-ball 31 and added 90 for the fourth wicket with his captain Kumar Sangakkara. Kumar struck again on his next delivery when he had Sangakkara caught behind by Parthiv Patel off a slower ball. Sangakkara’s 47-ball 65 was studded with 10 fours.
The partnership between Sangakkara and White came after RP Singh dismissed Sunny Sohal and Shikhar Dhawan in his first two overs to dent the Deccan Chargers innings. RP Singh trapped Sohal plumb in front of the wicket in the first over and in his next over Raiphi Gomez took a good catch running towards long-off from mid-off to dismiss Dhawan to place Deccan at 6/2. Deccan lost their third wicket when R Vinay Kumar had Bharat Chipli caught by S Sreesanth at midoff to reduce the visitors to 20/3. The breakthroughs came after Kochi captain Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and chose to bowl. Kochi have brought in Brendon
McCullum and S Sreesanth in place of Muthiah Muralitharan and VVS Laxman. The Chargers have dropped Pragyan Ojha in favour of Manpreet Gony. Get Ready for 27 Movie Sequels: Hollywood, Bollywood Meet
By Meena Iyer (TOI): Blame it on inertia; or blame it on the compulsions of commerce. Just the fact that 27 sequels of good, bad and indifferent Hollywood and Bollywood franchises will play at a theatre near you in the coming seven months, tells a story by itself. While Bollywood sets the sequel ball rolling with Indra Kumar’s Double Dhamaal in June, followed by Mukesh Bhatt’s Murder-2 in July, Sagar Bellary’s Bheja Fry 2, and the biggest one Shah Rukh Khan’s Don-2 on Christmas; Hollywood is going to beat the Hindi film industry hollow because they start with the shriek feast Scream 4, followed by West is West, a sequel to Om Puri’s East is East and then go into
Fast Five, Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 (3D /IMAX 3D), The Hangover 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, X-Men: First Class, Cars (2D & 3D), Transformers 3 (3D), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2), Paranormal Activity 3, Happy Feet 2 (3D),Mission Impossible 4 that has our very own Anil Kapoor teaming up with Tom Cruise. Why this sudden sequel traffic jam? “Paucity of original ideas,” says trade analyst Amod Mehra. “Honestly, Bollywood has been facing a brain drain for the longest time. We have nothing like ‘original’ left within our films. We have either been remaking regional films or stealing from foreign ones, or worse, revisiting our own past cinema.” Another producer cringes as he insists it’s lack of ideas that’s most certainly to be blamed for this. Says he, “A bright mind like Ram Gopal Varma became so defunct that he actually had the temerity to make a Ram Gopal Varma ki Sholay. This shows how even the sharpest mind can reach its nadir when not challenged enough.” But there are others who believe
that it isn’t just the paucity of original scripts that prompts filmmakers into making sequels. Says producer N R Pachisia, “Hollywood has been making sequels for six decades now...and they have been extremely successful. In fact, there are many instances where the sequels have done better box-office business than the original movie has.” Rattling off the most obvious examples of sequels like Mad Max, Die Hard, the Carry-on series, Spider Man, Superman, and Shrek, Pachisia says, “We in Bollywood are late bloomers.

Oil prices in New York have surged 37% in the past six months to $112.67 per barrel , according to data compiled by Bloomberg . Imports by India, which buys almost three quarters of the petroleum it uses from abroad,
climbed to a sevenmonth high of $8.2 billion in February. “The rupee has come under pressure mainly because of dollar demand from importers, particularly oil companies,” said Paresh Nayar, Mumbaibased head of currency and money markets at the Indian unit of FirstRand. Offshore forwards indicate the rupee will trade at 45.26 to the dollar in three months, compared with expectations of 45.09 at the end of last week. The airline CMD said the company wants to use resources more effectively and ensure that on time performance gets better.
“We have to keep our aircraft in a place where there are maximum number of flights. Outside Delhi and Mumbai, the largest number of flights is in Dubai,” he said, adding that after making hubs in Mumbai and Delhi, the “logical step” was to make a hub in Dubai in order to utilize resources and become more competitive.

Tata Consultancy Services Eye Healthcare Acquisitions in Germany and Japan MUMBAI (ET): India’s leading software services exporter, Tata Consultancy Services , is eyeing acquisitions in Germany and Japan in the healthcare sector, its chief executive said on Monday, as it looks to expand beyond its core U.S. market. TCS and smaller rivals Infosys Technologies and Wipro have been looking for overseas acquisitions to boost growth amid growing competition from global rivals such as IBM and Accenture. “ We w a n t t o l o o k a t opportunities for bringing some strategic capabilities, whether it is in platforms, whether it is in markets, N. Chandrasekaran told Reuters in an interview at the company’s corporate headquarters in Mumbai. The firm, which has about $2 billion in cash, has not set aside a specific amount for acquisitions, said Chandrasekaran, who is an avid long-distance runner and has completed marathons in Mumbai, New York , Prague, Stockholm and Vienna. “As long as TCS goes in for acquisitions for skill sets or expanding geographies at a
reasonable price, there is reason to believe an acquisition should prove to be positive, Jagannadham Thunuguntla, head of research at SMC Global Securities. TCS, a unit of the salt-tosteel Tata Group conglomerate, expects to see “marginal improvement in pricing for the fiscal year that began in April and expects to sustain current operating margins, Chandrasekaran, who said. The company posted operating margins for fiscal year 2011 of 27.8 percent under U.S. accounting rules. TCS, whose clients include Citigroup and General Electric , last week reported a 23-percent rise in fourth-quarter profit, beating estimates on rising demand. But the firm flagged wage hikes and currency volatility as main threats to its profit margins for this fiscal year. The country’s $60 billion outsourcing sector provides an array of services, including software coding and managing
computer networks and call centres for overseas firms such as British Airways, BT Group Plc, and Sony Corp. The U.S. technology market, the largest for Indian technology firms, will expand 8 percent in
2011, up from 7.4 percent projected earlier, with software, IT consulting services and technology outsourcing growing faster than last year, research firm Forrester said earlier this month. TCS expects strong outsourcing demand from overseas clients,
but the uncertainty in the global economic environment needs to be watched out for, Chandrasekaran said. “The macro is something we have to keep in the back of mind, but there are lot of signs of pick up in deal momentum, said the executive, a TCS veteran who took the top job at the country’s No. 1 software exporter in 2009. The United States accounts for more than 50 percent of revenue at Indian technology firms. Still, Indian firms are looking to grow in Europe, where demand has long been tepid, and emerging markets like Latin America and Africa , where rapidly growing economies are spurring demand for outsourcing. TCS expects technology budgets at top clients to rise 1 to 4 percent in the current fiscal year as companies boost spending on technology to improve efficiency and meet new regulatory norms like Basel III for banks , Chandrasekaran said. Chandrasekaran, who is also
the managing director of TCS, said staff turnover was a challenge for TCS, and the company would be comfortable with a 10 percent attrition rate over the medium to long term. Indian technology firms are seeing high turnover rates as they battle to keep their staff from being poached by larger global rivals. TCS is seeing increased business opportunities in new services sector like pharma, retail and utilities while it expects its mainstay financial services sector to continue to grow, Chandrasekaran said. TCS is “investing a lot on developing new platforms for supply chain and social media and on cloud computing, he said. Cloud computing, or the hosting of sites and services on the Internet, is viewed as the future of computing for consumers and corporations in an increasingly wireless world. Shares in TCS, valued at about $52 billion, closed on Monday up 0.5 percent i n the Mumbai market that fell 0.2 percent. Credit Suisse on Monday downgraded TCS to “neutral from “outperform, “ saying all positives were priced in. Photo: Geeta

It is not a joke to take up such a large drive in just one day. “It has to be a concerted effort of a large number of people coming together for a cause. Since it is very intensive in nature and a 43-km stretch has to be cleaned in one day, we have divided the villages into five zones and 20 sub-zones and each zone will get mechanical help like trucks, loaders and dumpers. Each person will put in at least three man hours into cleaning the beaches on May 1, which means 30,000 man hours in just one day,” Yadav said. Expressing concern at the increasing litter in the form of polythene bags, bottles, junk food covers, cigarette stubs, paper plates and other material, thrown by the tourists,Yathish Baikampady, a zonal head of the beach cleaning drive said, “They may not do it on purpose as most of them come A massive cleanup of the Mangalore coastline is about to take place from ghat areas. Public Private Partnerships to Develop India Tourism NEW DELHI (Siasat): Union Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay said state governments should develop tourism infrastructure through the public private partnership (PPP) mode to attract more investment to the sector. After a regional conference of tourism ministers of the northern and central states in Rishikesh last week, Sahay said the state governments should opt for the PPP mode and enlist the services of private consultants to oversee the projects to bring tourism dollars. The minister said he had also discussed the possibility of a single window clearance for 80-90 hotels in the states, modelled on the policy pursued by the central government. He said the tourism goal of the country was to attract atleast “one percent of the global tourists” for which “hotels across the states would need at least 400,000500,000 more rooms”. Tourism ministers from eight states attended the conference in Rishikesh, he said. “I told the states that I would motivate private investors to invest and provide them with consultants from our panel if they came forward with good projects. It is a task to make state tourism more vibrant,” Sahay said. Sahay said tourism employed the largest number of people in

Sahay said he was planning to develop the Buddhist, Sufi, Jain and Sikhism tourism circuits. Commenting on his state Jharkhand, Sahay said: “Tourism in Jharkhand has been neglected for the last 10 years. The money given to them for a project in 2004 has not been used till today. The minister said the government would promote tourism in south Asia, especially in the Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh regions, with more people-to-people contacts. “India’s tourism sector is witnessing an encouraging growth, with foreign tourist arrivals at 5.58 million in 2010,” Sahay said.
