— The Shri Sita Ram Foundation, USA hosted a celebration for Houston’s community with the 13th International Diwali-Dussehra Festival at the Fort Bend Epicenter in Rosenberg, Texas. An estimated crowd of 12,000 joined the event filled with cultural entertainment, delicious food, stunning dance performances, and a spectacular fireworks finale.

Diwali, or the “Festival of Lights,” is one of India’s most significant cultural events, celebrating the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Traditional activities include food, prayer, gifts, and fireworks, with homes adorned in lamps and rangolis—floor decorations symbolizing prosperity.

“Diwali is more than just a festival for us,” said Dr. Arun Varma, founder of the Shri Sita Ram Foundation. “It embodies ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ or ‘the world is one family.’ We welcome everyone to join us and celebrate our shared humanity, regardless of background or belief.”

This year’s festival emphasized global unity with flags from all 200 nations displayed, alongside active participation not only from the Hindu community, but also from Jewish, Sikh, and Christian communities. Special guests included over 15 Consuls General from Houston and the who’s who of Indian-American community. Spiritual leaders Baba Satyanarayana Maurya and Swami Anantacharya ji traveled specially from India, and inspired the audience with a message of faith and devotion.

The festival this year also featured an exact replica of the Ram Lalla deity from Ayodhya, clothed

in garments once worn by the original deity, which captivated devotees throughout the day. Families enjoyed a variety of entertainment, from Kids’ Orchestra, a Kids’ Talent Show, captivating dances and a Ram Leela, to a grand parade with over 60 cultural and social floats, a laser show, and childfriendly activities like face painting, choo choo train, moonwalks, and a magic show. Booths selling handicrafts, art, and traditional Indian food gave the grounds a true Diwali Mela feel. The evening culminated with a symbolic Ravan, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad effigy burning, representing Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king, a dazzling fireworks display lighting up the Texas sky, followed by a garba dance into the night, leaving attendees with memories of joy, unity, and cultural pride.

Hindus of Greater Houston Host Rangoli Event at Children’s Museum

houSton: On Sunday, November 3, Hindus of Greater Houston (HGH) celebrated Diwali at Children’s Museum of Houston (CMH). HGH organized and conducted a Rangoli exhibit and interactive activity for children.

Children were introduced to the Diwali festival, its significance, how it is celebrated and then offered a guided Rangoli art activity. Children were accompanied by their parents, grandparents and relatives and this offered an opportunity for them to learn about Diwali as well.

Building on the inaugural event last year, HGH volunteers designed a large Rangoli which was a star attraction and elicited

several “Wow!” moments. HGH volunteers demonstrated how to fill colors on pre-drawn Rangoli patterns and then let children and parents do it themselves.

Some children and parents enjoyed mixing up colors, while others were meticulous in separating colors. Some lingered for just a few minutes but most were engrossed in Rangoli art. Many parents said this was a fun but also a Zen-like and meditative experience and may want to do this at their own home.

Vast majority of the museum visitors were non-Indian families. Many were hearing about Diwali for the first time. HGH volunteers gave away waxed and unwaxed

Diya and other Diwali knickknacks in gift bags.

“Our holidays are so festive. We are bringing Hindu holidays, our stories, customs, colors and lights to children and parents in the broader Houston community,” said Chetan Davé, Director of HGH and creator of the event, “It is one thing to learn about Diwali by reading or hearing about it. It is quite another to learn through experience by doing it in a fun, family-friendly, hands-on activity like Rangoli. Kids and parents loved it!”

“We value our growing partnership with CMH and are grateful for their engagement with Hindu community of Houston”, said

HGH President Rachana Shah. CMH Programs Coordinator Stephanie Weisinger said, “The Children’s Museum Houston has partnered with Hindus of Greater Houston on multiple events since the fall of 2023. We’ve come a long way from our first event and have worked together to ensure we’re growing with each event, adding additional programming, giveaways, and educational information for our visitors. I’ve worked closely with Chetan Dave and have been wowed by his determination and drive to work with us on building these events up to make them more exciting and interactive for our guests. These events have been very suc-

cessful, each one bringing in more visitors than the previous time. Most recently, we worked together on our Diwali event; Hindus of Greater Houston invited an artist out to make a beautifully intricate Rangoli design to accompany their Rangoli Art activity for guests to try all while learning about the art/ celebration and even getting to take some powder home to practice on their own! The activity was the perfect addition to our other Diwali activities and performances. This organization has done so much to ensure our guests have a fun, educational experience. We’re very grateful for this partnership, and I eagerly look forward to our future collaborations!”

houSton: The radiant spirit of Diwali illuminated Shri Swaminarayan Temple, Vadtal Dham, on Sunday October 27, as Senior Sewa families from Cypress, Katy, Pearland, and Sugarland gathered for a celebration that was more than just a festivity. This year’s event highlighted the powerful sense of community and unwavering support for seniors, creating connections that truly matter.

The festivities began with a touching Aarti, enveloping attendees in Diwali’s rich traditions. The atmosphere was electric, as children, along with the talented Music Team featuring Imtiaz Bhai Munshi and Shridevi, set a jubilant

tone. Young performers, led by Kusum Sharma, enchanted the audience with a spirited Ganesh Vandana, bridging generations with their infectious enthusiasm. Local singers delivered soul-stirring performances, echoing the values of unity and resilience.

One of the most memorable moments was the exhilarating Garba dance. All participants joined hands, weaving a vibrant tapestry of culture and camaraderie. Seniors reveled in the festivities, creating cherished memories together. The morning started with delightful appetizers and tea, leading into a sumptuous lunch that fostered meaningful connections

and shared stories among families.

In a pioneering initiative, the event addressed the unique needs of seniors during this crucial Medicare renewal period. Attendees benefited from personalized one-on-one consultations, empowering them to navigate recent changes with confidence.

Fort Bend County Judge Surendran K. Pettel added a profound touch to the occasion, passionately stressing the importance of essential family documents like wills and estate planning. He shared poignant stories of individuals facing hardships due to inadequate preparation, urging at-

tendees to take proactive steps for their loved ones’ futures. The Senior Sewa initiative, launched under the Family Services Program two years ago, has thrived, with plans for more in-depth sessions on the horizon.

This Diwali celebration also included a meaningful food donation drive, allowing participants to share their joy with those in need within the community. Sewa’s Young LEAD volunteers played a crucial role in the event’s success, showcasing their commitment and enthusiasm.

Several Sewa seniors and representatives from other prestigious local organizations enriched the

gathering, adding depth to the experience for all involved. Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the event’s profound impact. Ragini Seth remarked, “A truly wonderful event. Kudos to all the organizers for orchestrating such a flawless occasion. Everyone had a fantastic time.”

Celebrating Dipavali: Festival of Light, Joy, and Gratitude at Chinmaya Mission

Lord Krishna’s triumph over the oppressive demon Narakasura.

As the crisp autumn air ushers in the holiday season, families around the world come together to celebrate Dipavali, also called Diwali, the Festival of Lights. While Halloween brings its share of fun with trick-or-treating, Dipavali stands out as a celebration of joy, spiritual renewal, and the triumph of good over evil. With its radiant displays of lights and sweet treats, the Hindu festival holds deep spiritual significance with stories that renew hope, prosperity, and a sense of togetherness.

The essence of Dipavali is rooted in ancient epics that symbolize the victory of good over evil. Most notably, the festival commemorates Lord Ram’s return to his kingdom of Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana; it celebrates

The most iconic image of Dipavali comes from the return of Lord Ram on a moonless night, when the city of Ayodhya was illuminated by countless rows of oil lamps. This illumination signifies the victory of light over darkness, a theme that resonates deeply and universally. Dipavali also symbolizes the victory of knowledge over ignorance, encouraging us to seek wisdom and spiritual growth.

At the heart of Dipavali celebrations is also the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the embodiment of prosperity and noble values. Her blessings bring abundance into the lives of her devotees, and Dipavali is a time to express gratitude while sharing our abundance.

The festive spirit in Chinmaya Mission Houston (CMH) began

well before the main day of Dipavali. The Chinmaya Mission youth group organized a food donation drive in line with the Chinmaya Pledge to “live the noble life of sacrifice and service.” This initiative supported those in need, reinforcing Dipavali’s themes of generosity and selflessness.

On Nov.3, the Smrti Hall at Chinmaya Mission Houston was filled with devotion and cheer as families gathered to mark the occasion. The attendees were dressed in their finest festive attire, their pooja thalis (prayer plates) adorned with diyas (lamps). The joyful atmosphere reflected a deep spiritual connection, as everyone came to worship as one community.

The celebration began with a heartfelt address by Pujya Acarya Gaurang Uncle, who welcomed the Chinmaya Mission family

and offered blessings for the year ahead. The puja ceremony, led by the revered priest Sri Ganeshji, was marked by Vedic hymns extolling Goddess Mahalakshmi.

The powerful chants of the Visnu Sahasranama, the thousand names of Lord Visnu, elevated the spiritual energy of the occasion. The rhythmic chanting created a deep sense of unity.

The CMH celebration concluded with the ancient tradition of Guru Dakshina, a token of gratitude and respect towards the Guru. This tradition is an integral part of CMH’s Dipavali observance, emphasizing the reverence the community holds for Pujya Acarya Gaurang Uncle and the Chinmaya Guru Parampara. His unwavering, devoted efforts still guide the spiritual journey of the Chinmaya family to gain the wisdom of Advaita

Vedanta—the philosophy of universal Oneness.

Dipavali, in all its spiritual richness, reminds us of the power of light—both literal and metaphorical—to bring joy, peace, and wisdom into our lives. The Chinmaya Mission family carried with them not only the joy of the celebration but also the knowledge that the light of wisdom continues to shine within, guiding their path for the year ahead.

houSton: Ruchi’s dedication to journalism and the Houston community has made her one of Houston’s most successful and impactful leading women, founding LCAHouston and immersing herself in Houston’s chic society life. Since moving to the USA in 2002, Ruchi has been a TV and print correspondent for The Statesman and Times of India but is most known for her LCAHouston International Mother’s Day Awards. Ruchi finds the balance between her personal and professional lives equally important.

“As a little girl, I always believed in having a true partner to travel with, to work together, experience things. Someone who will understand my passion for fashion and journalism,” Ruchi expressed, “Someone who’s consistent, someone who will make me a priority.” And Ruchi finally met her perfect match in the summer of 2020 and feeling a mutual instant connection with Walter Sasser. His being a New York fashion photographer turned firefighter and Ruchi a society lifestyle journalist, they were quite the unexpected match up. “At first glance, we’re worlds apart, but our hearts and souls are so together,” Ruchi revealed.

Ruchi celebrated her special day with her bridesmaids. They all have been a huge part of her journey through life, both personally and professionally. She holds

Ruchi Mukherjee and Walter Sassard

her maid of honor Toni Tate and bridesmaids Sippi Khurana, Rita Garcia, Sadaf Choudhury, Meka Coxon, Sneha Merchant, Teresa Reading, Purva Patel, and Pooja Lodhia and her own daughter Aryika.

Walter now works as a Lieutenant at the Magnolia Fire Depart-

ment since moving from New York in 2013. Early in their relationship, a work accident injured Walter for a taxing five-month period. While it seemed hopeless, he found comfort in Ruchi as she stayed by his side during the whole healing process. The relationship’s stability anchored them through the strains

of work, COVID-19, and everyday obstacles, and Ruchi and Walter knew they could always turn to the other for genuine support, advice, or just a shoulder to lean on.

“Something that really made our relationship solid: I finally felt that I had a true partner by my side,” Walter voiced. Although simply

being together was more than enough for the couple, Walter wanted to give Ruchi the fairytale Hindu wedding which they had always dreamed of.

Together, this Diwali (Indian Festival of Lights) they designed a beautiful month long pre wedding celebrations and with their blended family Ruchi’s daughter Aryika and Walter’s two children Luella and Felix who has embraced them from the beginning. The relationship was blessed with a traditional Hindu ceremony with friends and family from all over the world at Galveston’s historical Bryan Museum on November 3, 2024. They wanted people closest to experience the cultures so dear to them and feel inspired by love.

Ruchi has always strived to support local businesses and wants to continue doing so in the wedding, planning a showcase of culture and traditions that incorporates aspects of both the East and West. This highlight of the wedding was the Sangeet at Indian Summers Restaurant in Sugarland with an afternoon of live music by Rashmi Panikar and Shayan.

The message that Ruchi wants to convey with her story is to never lose hope for true love, while also continuing to improve yourself. Although her and Walter’s history reads like a magical fairytale, she knows relationships need nurturing.

‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’: Family Diwali Entertainer

Synopsis: Conman Ruhaan parading as a ghostbuster Rooh baba (Kartik Aaryan), is confronted by not one but two evil forces in a haunted mansion that put his survival and analytical skills to test.

Story: Keeping with the theme of the franchise, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 also pits an unassuming cheeky protagonist against a spooky haveli with a buried past. The centuryold mansion needs to be restored to its former glory and sold, but Manjulika’s terrorising presence in it forbids the owners from doing so. The royal family in dire need of resources, seeks Rooh baba’s intervention. The fraudster takes up the lucrative offer only to find himself tangled in a mess as he discovers two dark forces who claim to be Manjulika.

Close on the heels of Stree 2’s thumping success, comes yet another horror comedy. Anees Bazmee returns to direct BB after his 2022 hit, having taken over from Priyadarshan, who helmed the Akshay Kumar original (2007). Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is structured more as a comedy with elements of horror. Ensemble comedies have been Bazmee’s forte (Welcome, No Entry) after all, so the departure from Priyadarshan’s psychologically tense theme is understood. A particular scene revolving around a superstar is the highlight of this film and one of its finest scenes.

BB3 keeps you invested, and nowhere does it get tiring but it

does have its static phase where the comic punches don’t quite land as much as they should. The story takes a considerable amount of time to build up, but the wait feels rewarding, thanks to a thoughtful twist in the climax. You don’t see it coming at all and the makers succeed in giving a sensible and mature spin to a massy entertainer. The art direction deserves a mention too. The production value is a notch above the previous instalments.

Kartik anchors the film as he reprises the role of Ruhaan/ Rooh baba. He has the maximum screen presence and owns the role. Though this is a Kartik Aaryan show all the way, the women have been a solid backbone and crowd pullers in this franchise. Be it Tabu in the previous film or Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit in this one, the celebrated actresses are absolute scene stealers and stunners.

The film marks the return of Vidya Balan to the franchise after her stellar portrayal of Manjulika in 2007. She lets her eyes do the

talking. Vidya has Madhuri Dixit for company and together, they are like fire and ice. Madhuri with her million-dollar smile, powerful presence and graceful dance moves is a sight to behold. Their iconic dance-off in Ami Je Tomar, where each performs a distinct classical dance form - Madhuri predominantly Kathak, Vidyablend of Bharatnatyam-Odissi, is worth the hype. It’s tough to match up to Madhuri as far as dance is concerned but Vidya pushes herself skilfully. The song placement feels a bit sudden. However, the visual appeal and riveting performances make up for it. Rajpal Yadav, Sanjay Mishra and Ashwini Kalsekar, are extremely talented and deserved better lines. Triptii Dimri’s character arc could have been fleshed out better.

BB3 has its share of highs and lows but it delivers what you expect from a Diwali family entertainer. Make sure you guard the climax for others to enjoy the film, too..-- ToI
