India House Hosts International Day of Yoga 2021

Houston: India House celebrated the seventh annual International Yoga Day (IDY) on Monday, June 21 with an event featuring several yoga demonstrations, along with remarks by the Consulate General of India, Houston, and a joint yoga protocol accessible for all levels of yoga practitioners. The event, which took place outdoors on the grounds of India House – a non-profit organization serving Houston’s Indo-American community – was also livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube. “People from different faiths, cultures, languages and colors all came together as a world family to celebrate a common interest in yoga,” said Mark Ram, one of the event’s yoga instructors, who has been a Raja Yoga Meditation teacher for the past 30 years. “It was great to see the focus and enthusiasm of all the participants.” First proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a General Assembly address in 2014, International Yoga Day is now observed worldwide to recognize the many benefits of practicing yoga, an ancient Indian mind-body practice. Although India’s own IDY events took place virtually this year due to a second wave of the virus, Col. Vipin Kumar, executive director of India House, was happy to host

a safe, outdoor event in Houston, where outdoor event restrictions have been lifted by the Texas State governor since March 2, 2021. “Yoga is a holistic approach to health and well-being, which was evident at India House on June 21st” said Kumar, who thanked the Consulate General and supporting organizations for giving India House the responsibility of hosting this year’s event. The United Nations chose “Yoga for well-being” as this year’s event theme, focusing on the role the practice can play in fighting social isolation and depression, problems

that have become widespread as a result of COVID-19. In the U.S., more than 42 percent of people surveyed by the U.S. Census Bureau in December reported symptoms of anxiety or depression, an increase from 11 percent the previous year. “The current global COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health,” said Aseem Mahajan, Consul General of India, Houston. “Being a Yoga practitioner myself, I encourage Texans and other states that we serve,

like Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New Mexico, to practice yoga, as it helps in boosting the respiratory and immune systems, dealing with lifestyle related diseases, stress and for leading a healthy and balanced life,” Mahajan added. Data shows that more people have been turning to yoga over the past decade. Nearly 37 million U.S. adults practice yoga, and that number has only gone up during the coronavirus pandemic. According to ResearchAndMarkets.com, yoga equipment sales grew 154 percent in 2020, as people began

taking virtual yoga classes from home. And MindBody, a software company that provides business management tools for the wellness industry, reported that yoga is the most popular virtual class booked on their platform, with an average of nearly 22,000 yoga bookings per day. At Monday’s event, several of Houston’s top yoga instructors, including Nancy Martch, Shekhar Aggarwal, Mark Ram, Vishwarupa Nanjundappa, Catherine Urso, Farida Meguid, and Ryan Atlas, conducted the Standard Yoga Protocol, which is a suggested guideline for the IDY celebrations, published by the Government of India, Department of AYUSH Advanced level, difficult asanas, or postures were also performed.

Nine of 11 Bee Finalists are Indian-Americans Orlando: Nine of the 11 finalists for this year’s US Spelling Bee contest are Indian-Americans, reflecting the dominance young kids from the small ethnic community have had on this prestigious and high-pressure endurance test for more than a decade now. The 11 spellers, of which nine are Indian-Americans, will compete for the champion title during the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals on July 8, a statement said on Monday. The National Bee is a high-profile, high-pressure endurance test. The final rounds of this year’s

contest will be hosted in person at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida, and will be broadcast live in prime time on ESPN2. The 11 finalists are Roy Seligman, 12, from Nassau, The Bahamas; Bhavana Madini, 13, from New York; Sreethan Gajula, 14, from Charlotte, North Carolina; Ashrita Gandhari, 14, from Leesburg, Virginia; Avani Joshi, 13, from Illinois; Zaila Avant-garde, 14, from New Orleans; Vivinsha Veduru, 10, from Texas; Dhroov Bharatia, 12, from Dallas; Vihaan

Sibal, 12, from Texas; Akshainie Kamma, 13, from Texas and Chaitra Thummala, 12, from San Francisco. Over the past 20 years, IndianAmericans have been dominating the Spelling Bee contest even though they comprise only about 1 per cent of the US population. The Bee was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. But there were eight co-champions in 2019, seven of whom were Indian-Americans, bringing the total number of Indian-American champions since 1999 to 26. -- PTI

Tamil Nadu Foundation of Houston Hosts Annual Father’s Day Celebration Houston: TNF’s Houston Chapter hosted its annual Father’s Day event at the Texas Avenue Park on Saturday, June 26th, 2021. The Houston chapter is a non-profit that aims to provide education to the underprivileged children in the Thiruvarur district in India through its esteemed ABC project. This is now the 3rd year TNF’s Houston Chapter has hosted this event and they were happy to host it in person after being unable to in the past year due to the pandemic. Many people from the greater Houston area came together and had a blast with the various events and specialties such barbecue throughout the evening, music, dancing, a special yoga lesson from a renowned yogi, a dads’ debate segment and of course, karaoke. The Houston Chapter was excited to invite a Himalayan Master Yogi Shri Amudha Bharathi for an exclusive Father’s Day treat. Yogi Shri Amudha Bharathi gave a lecture on Vaasi, a form of yoga that focuses on the inner breath and a more meditative branch of yoga. Following his thought-provoking lecture, the fathers split up into groups for a fun and incredibly entertaining debate; one group argued that meditation was a necessity or played a helpful role in navigating through life, while the other group argued that mediation was just a hype. The discussion was the cause of many laughs throughout the crowd with great points from both angles and a question still left

and strength. He contributes to the community in many facets, from acting in Tamil Stage Creations dramas to hosting music fundraising events for various non-profits. Both these fathers are admired by the Houston Indian community and their achievements and contributions will impact us for many years to follow. International Day of Yoga 2021 Features Chair Yoga for Senior Citizens

By Thara Narasimhan Houston: For the 2021 International Day of Yoga, members of the Houston community, supported by the Consulate General of India Houston and ICCR India, organized an event “Chair Yoga for Seniors 65+”. This event, held at the Gujrati Samaj of Houston Event Center on June 20th, was instructed by Meena Kankani, the owner of Swasth Yoga in Katy. Meena is a highly qualified yoga therapist and instructor with experience teaching yoga at senior living centers, hospitals, and to the general public. She is certified through the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), SVYASA, e

Cornell’s Whole Food Plant Based Certificate and Food Matters’ Nutrition Certification on nutrition and lifestyle management. The Senior Yoga Session started with prayers that tuned the mind and body and was followed by a series of simple stretches leading to skeletal exercise. A simple yet important spinal alignment exercise to build balance, strength, and flexibility of the senior group of practitioners was performed. The group was then led to a series of poses that relaxed, the head, neck, chest, shoulders, arms, abdomen, knee, and the legs were systematically approached. The Salutation of the Sun- “Surya Namaskar” with variation of sitting

on the Chair Surya Namaskar was practiced slowly and rhythmically. This is one of the most important Yoga practices that rejuvenates the body and refreshes the mind. The winding down with a calming sequence was well presented to get a complete relaxation. Yoga practice was completed with “Anulom Vilom” Pranayama breathing in and out and a meditational minute with warming hands and face was the final closure. It was a very rewarding one and a half hour of Yoga poses that was well planned for seniors with low to moderate intensity. Indeed, all can benefit from this Yogabhyasa (Yoga practice) that was led by the expert instructor

Meena Kankani of Swasth Yoga. Any seniors 65+ can join chair yoga classes every Saturday at

Cross 5-for Yields India’s Second ODI Loss

Bristol (ESPN Cricinfo): India Women 221 (Raj 59, Verma 44, Cross 5-34, Ecclestone 3-33) vs England Women Kate Cross’ second career fivefor and a second successive threefor from Sophie Ecclestone were pivotal to England restricting India to 221 in the second ODI in Taunton. India captain Mithali Raj top-scored for her side with 59 - a second straight fifty in as many games - after opener Shafali Verma made 44 in her second outing in ODIs. After losing the toss, India showed better intent with the bat than the first ODI. Openers Smriti Mandhana and Verma mixed caution with aggression against the new-ball tandem of Anya Shrubsole and Katherine Brunt, who employed short deliveries while making use of the movement off the pitch and in the air. The fifty opening stand came up in the 11th over. In the next over, the introduction of a third pacer, in Cross, gave England their breakthrough and Cross the first of her five wickets. Mandhana, bowled in the first match trying to late cut a good-length, scrambled seam delivery towards the third man, chopped on a similar away-going ball in a similar attempt, this time the movement upon landing only

slightly more, the pace less. England had turned to spin as early as the ninth over, with leftarm spinner Ecclestone bowling six overs for 20 runs and picking up the wicket of Verma in her first spell. Six shy of a maiden ODI fifty and parched of runs in the first three balls of the 17th over, Verma trotted down the pitch but was stumped adeptly by Amy Jones as Ecclestone dragged the line of the on-a-fourth-stump-line delivery slightly short to have Verma miss her cut. No. 3 Jemimah Rodgriues, replacing Punam Raut in the XI that saw two additional changes, struck two emphatic fours in Ecclestone’s fifth over. That’s all she could score in her 15-ball stay before offering up a leading edge off

Cross down the wicket for Brunt to complete an easy take. After India slipped from 56 for 0 to 77 for 3 in the space of 29 balls, Raj and her deputy, Harmanpreet Kaur, strung a fourth-wicket stand of 68 runs to lift India to 145 for 4 by the 34th over. It was the duo’s third fifty-plus stand in their last four ODI innings together and their 15th fifty partnership in ODIs overall. Their collaborative effort ended with Cross eliciting a cavalier hoick off Kaur that ended up in a benign top edge for Cross to gobble up. The next-best partnership was worth just 15, between Raj and Deepti Sharma, whose flick found Sophia Dunkley in the deep and Cross making giant strides on her merry march to a memorable outing.
