Indian Embassy Condols Bridge Collision

Washington DC: The Indian Embassy in the US has condoled the “unfortunate accident” in Baltimore where a cargo ship manned by a 22-member Indian crew, struck and demolished a key bridge, an accident that may have killed six people and brought one of the most important ports in the northeast US to a grinding halt.

Several vehicles were crossing Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which is more than 2.6 km-long when it collapsed after the container ship collided with one of its supports Tuesday early morning. Officials said the Singapore-flagged ship ‘Dali’ suffered a “power issue” and issued a distress call moments before the crash.

US President Joe Biden, in remarks at the White House, said the alert sent by the ship’s crew before the collision saved lives.

“Personnel on board the ship were able to alert the Maryland Department of Transportation that they had lost control of their

vessel…As a result, local authorities were able to close the bridge to traffic before the bridge was struck, which undoubtedly saved lives,” Biden said.

“Our heartfelt condolences to all affected by the unfortunate accident at the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore,” the Indian Embassy in the US said in a post on X.

It said that the Embassy has created a dedicated hotline for any Indian citizens who may be affected or require assistance due to the tragedy. The Embassy is ascertaining details regarding the vessel’s crew.

Ship management company Synergy Marine Group said in a statement that the crew on Dali is “All Indian, 22 in total.”

“All crew members, including the two pilots, have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution,” it said. -- IE

IAPAC’s “Conversations Over Coffee” Event on the U.S. Judicial System

KAty: On March 17, 2024, the Indo-American Political Action Committee (IAPAC) hosted a dynamic session of Conversations Over Coffee (COC) at Turmeric Indian Restaurant in Katy, TX. The event, chaired by Deepti Nigudkar and Parvin Shaikh, brought together prominent legal professionals from Fort Bend County, including District Attorney Brian Middleton, Judge Christian Becerra from the 434th District Court. Moderated by IAPAC board member Purusottam Sahoo, the gathering provided an engaging platform for dialogue and insight. As IAPAC President, Dr Roopa Gir noted in her introduction, COCs aim to foster civic engagement, strengthen community relations, and promote informed voting decisions.

The event provided a unique platform for the Indian American community to directly interact with key figures in the local justice system. Attendees gained valuable insights into the inner workings of the courts and the challenges faced by legal professionals.

DA Middleton emphasized his office’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable, stating, “Our highest priority always and forever will be the protection of our most vulnerable, which are women and children.” He also discussed the importance of making “evidence-based decisions using

best practices” to ensure fair prosecution while holding offenders accountable.

Judge Becerra provided insights into the daily operations and challenges faced in the 434th District Court. Under his leadership, the court has implemented reforms to reduce case backlogs and utilize technology for more efficient proceedings. “What we’ve done in my courtroom is we’ve updated the AV system, right, that allows

us to check in on our phone,” he explained. Judge Becerra stressed the significance of bringing positive reform to the justice system in Fort Bend County.

The Q&A session allowed for a lively exchange of ideas and concerns. During the Q&A session, the officials addressed a range of topics, including:

- Educating voters: Judge Becerra emphasized the need for elected officials to engage with the com-

munity and be accountable. DA Middleton discussed his office’s efforts to provide community feedback and the importance of in-person outreach.

- Differences between the federal and state legal systems: DA Middleton explained the jurisdictional differences and how his office collaborates with federal agencies on cases.

- Bail reform and protecting the rights of the accused: The officials

discussed the challenges of the cash bail system and the importance of upholding the presumption of innocence while ensuring public safety.

- The role of partisanship in the judicial system: Both Judge Becerra and DA Middleton stressed that their duties are to interpret the law and seek justice impartially, regardless of political affiliations.

County Judge KP George commended IAPAC for organizing educational sessions like COCs across town. “It is very important and I’m glad that IAPAC is engaging in these kinds of educational sessions to encourage civic engagement in this community so that we can be better informed citizens,” he remarked. County Judge George also highlighted various internship opportunities available for high school and college students through his office and other county departments.

‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’: Powerful Biopic

Story: Was Savarkar a devout patriot or a bomb golavala who incited violence? Accused and acquitted of multiple conspiracy theories which includes Gandhi’s assassination, the biopic takes a closer look at the fiery freedom fighter and his tumultuous life.

Review: Vinayak Damodar Savarkar aka Swatantrya Veer Savarkar has been a controversial figure in India’s freedom struggle, given his unequivocal allegiance to armed revolution, notwithstanding the consequences. The revolutionary endured years of torture in the cellular jail. He paid a hefty price for his ideology by being dragged in the centre of a political storm ever since.

Hailed by some for his bravery and humiliated by others for his mercy petitions to the British, the film makes him feel heard and seen. His formation of ‘Hindutva’ prioritised country over religion, condemned casteism, social hierarchy, superstition, and inequality. One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. One man’s hero is another man’s villain. Every truth has two sides. Randeep Hooda’s biopic on Savarkar, doesn’t flinch while speaking its truth, hoping to rein-

state the dignity and respect, that the writer-freedom fighter was stripped off over the years Spanning decades, right from pre to post independence, the film understands the key events of Savarkar’s life without rushing through it. Contribution of his family in the freedom struggle, formation of secret society Abhinav Bharat, activities at India House, belief in the teachings and mindset of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, differences with Gandhi and absolute hatred for slavery, injustice, and oppression, this one’s all encompassing. Given the sheer magnitude of the story, this was a tough one to crack but first-time director, Randeep Hooda, who also plays the titular role makes this a compelling watch.

Tense, engaging and unsettling, the film does more than presenting a recap of historical events. It delves into the psyche, morals, and implications of it all. Nothing is surface level. Each frame has a story to tell. Barring one song that plays in the background in the second half, no time is wasted in music to get the patriot in you going. The dialogues get your blood pumping. The film is technically sound and transportive. It doesn’t exploit or glorify Savarkar’s ordeal at the Kaala-

pani (solitary confinement) but weaponises it. Some scenes stay with you like the interactions between Gandhi and Savarkar. The clash of ideologies never led to disrespect.

What sticks out as a sore thumb in an otherwise well-made film is the blatant vilification of the Indian National Congress and Gandhi as a minority and British sympathiser. The film doesn’t propagate violence though. It wants you to merely acknowledge the sacrifices of armed revolutionaries which are often overlooked because ‘ahimsa’ paved the way to freedom.

Interestingly, Hooda’s massive physical transformation is just the tip of the iceberg. He presents Savarkar as both heroic, and helpless, and someone who fought till the end despite the inhuman atrocities inflicted upon him. While Gandhi was hailed as a Mahatma, Savarkar was compelled to wonder if the himsa (violence) he supported for justice and Swatantrata (freedom) led to sarvanash (destruction) instead. This one’s a polarising but powerful biopic that attempts to vindicate Savarkar. It tells his side of the story.
