2021 Hindu Heritage Youth Camp: A Unique Experience Since 1985
grow older and become counselors who work tirelessly to give back to the next generation of young HinduAmericans. HHYC was hosted at Victory Camp this year, and will soon be hosted at its very own campsite which is in the process of being built. I know both campers and counselors are thrilled to see that HHYC will finally get its own campsite built to reflect our Hindu faith.
Visit the new campsite virtually at https://www.texashinducampsite. org to learn more about the work in progress and also consider donating towards the cause that is so near and dear to our hearts. Going to camp was one of the best decisions I made for myself
not only as a Hindu but as a human being – I’m forever grateful for the shared experiences I’ve had there and I so look forward to being a counselor next year as I complete my senior year soon. Bhool mat -- Anshumi Jhaveri, Senior, Dulles High School. Photo: Akhil Singh

Every year, I count down the days till Hindu Heritage Youth Camp (HHYC) or what’s popularly known amongst campers and counselors as the “best five days of the year”. HHYC is a five-day summer camp founded in1985, in which elementary through high school students are taught to expand their knowledge of Hindu teachings and culture while disconnecting from technolog. While religious camps are popular in the US, there’s so many things about HHYC that make it so special. For many kids, being a Hindu in America is a unique experience – Hindu Americans are used to being a minority in their classrooms, activities and overall day-to-day life. HHYC brings Hindu American kids together and provides a sense of belonging, strengthening one’s identity as both a Hindu and a human being. The way they do this is through a unique approach which adheres to the belief that Hinduism is a way of life. While this is a religious camp, Hinduism is not taught to students by dissecting religious texts and prayers. Rather, it is taught to students through educations, arts and crafts, yoga, singing bhajans, and playing games outside. All of these activities are conducted and crafted by counselors who are mostly college students and extremely proud to call themselves previous campers of HHYC. This year’s camp was directed by Ranjan Veludandi and Shamal Shah, both previous attendees and counselors of HHYC. Having gone to HHYC for so many years, I can definitely say that I’m so grateful for the educations. The counselors work diligently to teach Hinduism to campers by discussing modern day issues and topics, all while relating it back to core principles and values of Hindu teachings. This not only keeps children engaged, but actually shows us how to apply our religion in our lives. One of my all-time favorite educations over my years of camp has been on “Feminism in Hinduism”. Not only did we learn about all the Hindu Goddesses, we were able to see how such an ancient religion has been rooted in the belief that all people are equal, and that we should value our women just as much as we do our men. Each year, a wide variety of topics are covered and students of all ages strengthen their values and deepen their knowledge of the applicability of Hinduism. Counselors have connected Hinduism to sports, discussed cultural appropriation, and even taught us about Hinduism in relation to mental health. We begin the day with yoga, and spend the rest of our mornings engaged in physical activity outside which are connected to stories in Hinduism. In the evening, different grade levels of campers routinely compete each day to see who can sing bhajans the loudest and show their devotion for Bhagwan (God). Each night has a different event, with some favorite ones being Garba and Holi. Aunties and volunteers work tirelessly every single day to make us tasty food in between all of our activities and events, and campers get the opportunity to learn “seva” through helping serve food to their peers. While all of these activities are extremely fun, the best part of camp is undoubtedly the relationships which are fostered. Six years ago, I met my absolute best friends at camp. These friends have become family to me and I know hundreds of other campers and counselors can say the exact same. There’s a reason so many campers graduate and return as counselors, and it’s the bonding which occurs as a result of these five days in the summer. Every part of HHYC is laced with so much love, effort, and a respect for Hindu values. All of these traits become a part of each attendee, and the legacy continues as campers

Cruise Drug Bust Case: Aryan Khan Remains in Jail
Mumbai: Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan will remain in jail after a special court in Mumbai on Thursday reserved its order on his bail plea. Aryan Khan was arrested in connection with the seizure of banned drugs, on board a cruise ship off the Mumbai coast. During the hearing, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) stated that Khan was a regular consumer of contraband for last few years. Citing government’s national policy on narcotics drugs, Khan’s counsel Advocate Amit Desai argued that he, as an end consumer, was a person affected by the drug abuse. Stating that the international convention has taken a decision that all the countries should take drug trafficking and drugs abuse seriously because it is affecting society, the nation and the world, NCB’s counsel Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Anil Singh said he doesn’t agree with the argument that involvement of kids can be a reason for consideration for granting bail. “Drugs are also affecting youngsters, college students. Argument was advanced that these
are young boys, they are kids. And that may be one of the considerations for granting bail. I don’t agree with this. You are our future generation. The entire country will be dependent on this generation. ” he said in court. Desai, appearing for Aryan Khan, however, referred to the national policy on Narcotic Drugs and Pyschotropic Substances, saying that the government’s policy itself speaks of being sensitive to students of schools and colleges and a different approach for peddlers. Citing a Bombay High Court order, he also said the HC had not agreed with the contention that ce-
Earlier this month, India anlebrities are to be treated harshly, stating that they are equal before law. Opposing the bail plea filed by Khan, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, representing NCB, said that he was a regular consumer of contraband for the last few years. “The record and evidence placed before the court show that he (Aryan) is a regular consumer of contraband for the last few years. Contraband was found in possession of Arbaaz Merchant, who accompanied the applicant. It is clearly recorded in panchnama that the contraband was for consumption of both.” -- IE

New Delhi: Due to the COVID19 pandemic, all visas granted to foreigners were suspended last year. Various other restrictions were also imposed on international travel by the Central Government to arrest the spread of the COVID19 pandemic. After considering the evolving COVID-19 situation, foreigners were later on allowed to avail any kind of Indian visa other than Tourist Visa for entry and stay in India. However, the MHA had been receiving representations from several State Governments as well as various stakeholders in the tourism sector to start Tourist Visas also, to allow foreign tourists to come to India. Therefore, the MHA consulted all major stakeholders like the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Tourism and various State Governments where foreign tourists are expected to arrive. After considering various inputs,
the MHA has decided to begin granting of fresh Tourist Visas for foreigners coming to India through chartered flights with effect from October 15, 2021. Foreign tourists entering into India by flights other than chartered aircraft would be able to do so only with effect from November 15, 2021 on fresh Tourist Visas. All due protocols and norms relating to COVID19 as notified by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare from time to time, shall be adhered to by the foreign tourists, carriers bringing them into India and all other stakeholders at landing stations. House of Secrets: Beyond Gory Details, Re-examines Case that Gripped Nation By Rohan Nahaar Avoiding the exploitative tone that most true crime documentaries find irresistible, Netflix’s House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths goes beyond the gory details and addresses the sociological and psychological aspects of a case that made national headlines in 2018. That title is as salacious as it is willing to get. Eleven members of the same family were found hanging in the living room of their north Delhi house one summer morning; three generations, dead in what appeared to be an occult ritual gone wrong. Their bodies were discovered by neighbours who noticed a disturbance in their daily routine. An hour later, everyone from chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to Rinkiya ke Papa had arrived at the scene of the crime; thousands of curious locals had surrounded the area, climbing on rooftops to get a better look at what was being described by screeching news anchors as one of the most shocking crimes in years. And it really was. Not since the Nithari killings or the Arushi double murder case had a crime story made national news so rapidly. Call it a coincidence, or purely my ignorance of other major stories of this kind, but each of these three cases happened in and around New Delhi. This is quite a sobering realisation to have. While I’ve never been to Burari, or even that part
of town, I’ve lived in this city my entire life. It’s one thing to watch fictional shows such as Paatal Lok and Delhi Crime and admire the attention to detail with which they were put together, but it’s rather distressing to relive a case that truly makes you question the very idea of decency. The access that the filmmakers have been granted in House of Secrets is admirably expansive. A lesser series would’ve been quite content with rounding up the next of kin, a couple of journalists, and whichever cop was willing to talk and called it a day. But House of Secrets throws a handful of psychologists into the mix, adding a key perspective that is usually missing in programmes such as this. The Burari deaths were presented ‘only as the bizarre’ by the media, a clinical hypnotherapist says in the show, but despite doing ex-
one policeman might seem at recalling details of what is clearly the biggest case of his life, even he can’t help but restrain his commentary when asked about the devastation that it has left behind. The policeman freely admits that he is asked about the Burari deaths even today, and in a way, his participation in this documentary proves his point. While debating with his right-hand man about whether or not the deaths can be
classified as suicide or murder, his partner excitedly describes it as an ‘incidental death’, before quickly correcting himself: “Accidental death, I mean.” There’s an aura of opportunism about these two cops, and it wouldn’t at all be surprising if they continue telling stories about the Burari deaths well into retirement. They weren’t exactly involved in the investigation, but just happened to be posted at the right ‘thaana’ at the right time. In a keenly-observed moment that the filmmakers cleverly choose to retain in the show, the cop cuts a call by telling the person on the other end that he is busy shooting a documentary. It reveals so much about him. -- HT

IPL Final: CSK vs KKR
Dubai: When the IPL came to a halt in May, Kolkata Knight Riders were gripped by Covid, gripped by the fear of losing their wickets, gripped by opponents’ bowlers in the powerplay and gripped by surfaces that didn’t aid their game. Their approach was far from the blueprint Brendon McCullum was trying to imbibe. Needing to win virtually every game in the second half, they hoped they would be able to invoke the spirit of 2014, where they went on a bull run - going from two wins from seven to winning every single game from there on - to lift the trophy. They haven’t come close to winning the cup since, but four weeks into the UAE leg, they are a step away from the miracle they were trying to draw crumbs of comfort from, after being isolated in their hotel rooms in Ahmedabad in May. Their opponents, Chennai Super Kings, have been there and done that so many times now that approaching a final doesn’t seem new anymore. The hurt of having not qualified for the playoffs for the first time, in 2020, seems to have been a big turning point in terms of the direction they have taken. From the chop-change of last year to change-only-if-needed mantra, they look as settled and calm as a side can come during a knockout, knowing very well how to put together all the pieces of their jigsaw blindfolded. Deepak Chahar: new ball. Ruturaj Gaikwad: anchor. Faf du Plessis: enforcer. Robin Uthappa: aggressor. Dwayne Bravo: death bowling. Josh Hazlewood: hard lengths. MS Dhoni? Magic. Of the kind from four days ago, when he got the better of Avesh Khan when it came to a one-on-one battle, under pressure, of the kind he has thrived on for so many years. This being the last game before the mega auction is sure to elicit emotions. The “Dad’s Army” will possibly be playing together for one final time. There won’t be a better way to go out than with the cup. It’s a game between a side that hasn’t lost a final against one that makes so many that they treat all of them like just another game. It’s a contest between two World Cup-winning captains who have been far from their best with the bat. Dhoni provided glimpses of the old Dhoni earlier in the week. Will an out-of-form Eoin Morgan have the last laugh here? Shakib Al Hasan, a two-time IPL winner with Knight Riders, will be available for the game. His participation needed some sort of a sign-off from the BCB, given he will have to leave for Oman, where Bangladesh open their T20 World Cup campaign against Scotland less than 48 hours after the IPL final. The only call Knight Riders may have to make is picking between Shakib and Andre Russell, if fit. For Super Kings, Suresh Raina may continue to sit out after having an indifferent tournament with the bat. Robin Uthappa, who hit a sparkling half-century in the previous game, is expected to retain his place in what could be an unchanged XI. One of the reasons for Super Kings’ resurgence this season is their partnership of Gaikwad and du Plessis, whose 1150 runs together is the most by an opening pair. Knight Riders need to find a way to disturb this. du Plessis has gone at 137.2 in the powerplay so far this season. -- ESPN Cricinfo

What makes CHAIBOY so disruptive and special? “Our contemporary approach is one that aims to introduce tea to various industries”, says Samir.
