3 Vice President Kamala Harris: “India is an Important US Partner”
US-INDIA
Washington DC: Terming India a very important partner, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris said Sept. 23 that the two countries shared belief in a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Harris made the remarks during a joint statement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “India is a very important partner to the U.S. We had COVID-19, the kind of crisis and importance of our shared belief in a free and open Indo-Pacific region. On COVID-19, our nations have worked together. Early in the pandemic, India was a vital source of vaccines for other countries,” the Indian American vice president said. “When India experienced the surge of COVID in the country, the United States was proud to support India in its need and its responsibility to vaccinate its people,” she added. Meanwhile, Modi expressed his gratitude to the U.S. for extending a helping hand to India when it was hit by the second wave of COVID-19. “I extend my gratitude for the warm welcome that you have extended to me and my delegation. Some months ago, we had the opportunity to talk to each other over the phone. We had a detailed discussion at that time. The way you spoke to me so warmly and naturally. I will always remember that,” Modi said in a joint press conference with Harris after the

two leaders met. “It was a very difficult time when India was hit by the second wave of COVID-19. The way you expressed concern and extended a helping hand, I express my gratitude to you. I will like to thank you,” he added. Highlighting that India and America are “natural partners,” Modi said India and the U.S. have similar values, geopolitical interests, and our coordination and cooperation is also increasing. “The vibrant and strong peopleto-people connections between India and the U.S. is a bridge between our two countries, their contributions are praiseworthy,” he added. “Your election as vice president of USA has been an important and historic event. You are a source of inspiration for many across the world. I am confident that under President Biden and your leadership our bilateral relations will touch new heights,” he added. Modi met with Harris a day ahead of his highly anticipated bilateral meet with U.S. President
Joe Biden. This was Modi’s first in-person meeting with Harris after she made history by becoming the first Indian American to become the vice president of America. Earlier in June this year, Modi held a telephonic conversation with Harris and discussed the United States’ strategy for global vaccine sharing and Quad vaccine initiative to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. In a statement before leaving for the U.S., Modi had said he is looking forward to meeting Harris to explore opportunities for cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the area of science and technology. Earlier in the day, Modi met Australian Prime Minister Scott Mor-
rison and held meetings with five global CEOs for potential investment in India. These talks were part of a series of meetings that Modi undertook with select heads of corporates that have the potential to invest significantly in India. Earlier on Sept. 23, the prime minister arrived in Washington for his much-touted U.S. visit. He had earlier addressed the Global COVID-19 Summit called by President Biden. Biden was the host for Modi at the White House on Sept. 24, in the first in-person meeting between the two leaders after Biden took over as the president on Jan. 20. Biden was also the host for the first-ever in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit, which will be joined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. Modi’s U.S. visit concludd on Sept. 25 with an address at the United Nations General Assembly focusing on the pressing global challenges including the
COVID-19 pandemic, the need to combat terrorism, climate change and other important issues. This is Modi’s first visit abroad beyond the neighborhood since the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and senior officials. Earlier, Mukesh Aghi, president and CEO of the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership, explained why the meeting between the two leaders is crucial, saying Harris is quite powerful within the administration and the connection between the two is going to help both countries in the short and long term. “We are proud, we are proud I think. Are we proud because she’s an American? Are we proud that she is the first woman, we would be surprised to break what I call the glass ceiling, but I think more importantly is for Prime Minister Modi to build relationships with Kamala Harris, because you have to understand she comes from the left side of the progressive wing of the party, and they are very much cautious about doing trade deals with nations itself, and they would like to see more of human rights, labor rights embedded into trade deals, so I think it’s important that the relationship between the prime minister and Cabinet house is built,” he said. -- Combined news sources

Education Award for Pratham’s CEO
Houston: Pratham CEO Dr Rukmini Banerji is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Yidan Prize for Education Development for her work on improving children’s learning levels. The Yidan Prize is awarded by the Yidan Prize Foundation — a global philanthropic education foundation working on progress and change in education — and nine people have received it since its inception in 2016. Other than this, the foundation also awards Yidan Prize for Education Research which has been given to Professor Eric A. Hanushek, Paul and Jean Hanna Senior Fellow and Professor, Hoover Institution of Stanford University this year. Each laureate is awarded HK$ 30 million—approximately US$ 3.9 million—half of which is a project fund to help them scale up their work. According to Dr. Banerji, the prize will allow Pratham to work towards the future by expanding their work with younger children. She has done crucial work through the ASER assessment approach and the ‘Teaching at the Right Level’ programme. “The Yidan Prize gives us the opportunity to work on the future and I’m very excited about that. For a number of years we have been thinking about why this problem happens in the first place. Why do children fall behind? What can be done to ensure that the problem that we’ve been working on for the past 15 years goes away? There could be many reasons for that but one is that children come into school already with a disadvantage. Maybe you have a family that’s not very educated, maybe you’ve not had enough pre-school,
Pratham CEO Dr. Rukmini Banerjee
readiness preparation… We have been thinking in the last few years that doing things differently in the early years, the preschool years, first and second grade is important. The new education policy says the same thing, that we need to develop our early years continuum well… Something we are keen on is how do we get schools, preschools and anganwadis functioning better but during the pandemic we have also seen a big surge of support from mothers, parents and communities,” she said. This prize comes at a time when most younger children are not back to school or preschool yet and
there is no certainty about when different states will permit them back to their learning spaces. On working on their goals with these limitations, Dr Banerji said, “Since July we’ve started what we’re calling a ‘mohalla learning campaign’… We’re doing the neighbourhood version of ‘teaching at the right level’ where a young volunteer will work with a small group of kids… We’ve been sending mothers little activities through SMS and Whatsapp like counting the spoons in the house, arranging bowls from big to small… In addition to this we have been organizing mothers in small groups right in their neighbourhood… In their group, we have a ‘smart mom’ who is anchoring it and she has a smartphone. Once a week they get together where they share what they’ve done during the week and the next couple of activities to do. We’ve had an overwhelming response. In 10,000 communities—some urban, most rural—we have almost 30-35,000 moms who have been part of this. We feel that even while schools and preschools have been closed, this is something that has been possible.” -- Indian Express

8 October 1, 2021 ENTERTAINMENT “Nirmal Anand ki Puppy”: A Touching Tale of Mumbaikars part further in the premise. Despite these flaws, it reflects the life of an ordinary man in a fairly simple manner, making it both credible and interesting. The cinematography isn’t flashy; instead, it’s grounded and realistic, lending an organic feel to the film. As Nirmal, Karanveer Khullar gives a decent performance. He disappears inside his character, and his expressions and body language reveal what he’s going through. Gillian Pinto is a delight to watch on-screen. She effortlessly conveys the emotions of a mother, a responsible wife, and a
By Archika Khurana The story revolves around the lives of Nirmal Anand (Karanveer Khullar), an anti-diabetic drug salesman, and his Christian wife Sarah (Gillian Pinto). But, two back-to-back events—Nirmal getting diagnosed with diabetes and the death of his dog (Parie)—have a profound impact on this closeknit family, causing them to react in unexpected ways. Set in Mumbai, ‘Nirmal Anand Ki Puppy’ delves into the complexities that lie beneath the mundaneness of Nirmal and Sarah’s daily lives. As the film acknowledges, Nirmal is the more observant of the two, and his anxieties are highlighted right away in the opening scenes. As a parent, Nirmal is perplexed as to why his daughter is playing with a boy rather than other girls in the neighbourhood, and as the husband, he refuses to let his archivist wife work full-time because he is concerned about who will look after their children. In many ways, he is stereotypical, but that is who he is. Given that Nirmal works as a regional manager for a pharmaceutical company that sells anti-diabetic drugs, being diagnosed with diabetes had a particularly negative impact on him. While coping with the situation and the death of his dog, he makes a significant ca-
reer shift that alters the dynamics of his personal and professional lives. Will Nirmal and Sarah’s puppy love blossom despite their numerous hardships, or will they be crushed by them? Written and directed by an independent filmmaker Sandeep Mohan, this drama focusses heavily on the couple’s dynamics— their grief, love, respect for each other, happiness, compromises and pursuing one’s dreams. The film’s shooting locations are mostly indoors, which are intended to serve the protagonists’ larger issues by making viewers feel more connected to the characters. The screenplay moves at a slow pace, and certain passages are repeated, especially when Nirmal
aspires to be an actor and employs method acting techniques to improvise his understanding of a taxi driver’s life. A lot of time is spent developing the couple’s attachment to their pet (Parie), yet she is only used as a prop when there was ample scope existed to explore her
working woman. ‘Nirmal Anand Ki Puppy’ depicts the monotony of Mumbaikars as well as the modern-day relationships that require equal amount of contribution and compromise from both parties. Overall, this film will undoubtedly touch your heart due to its simple approach and high emotional quotient. -- Times of India
