in his capacity as previous Sheriff of Harris County. “Deputy Dhaliwal paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect us, and he will never be forgotten. I am thankful to Representative Fletcher and the United States Postal Service for this important recognition. Sandeep lived his life with the purpose to spread dignity and respect to all he came in contact with, and I am hopeful that the Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal Post Office will inspire all who visit to follow in Sandeep’s example. “Since my son was taken from our family in a senseless act of violence, we have received an outpouring of support and love from the greater Houston community,” said Pyara Singh Dhaliwal, the late Deputy Dhaliwal’s father. “We are so grateful and so honored that Sandeep is being memorialized in this way—forever becoming a part of the city that he served faithfully both in and out of uniform.” “Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal did not set out to be a trailblazer, he simply approached life with a caring heart, a generous spirit, and a warmth that brought people together,” said Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) Southwest Regional Director Bobby Singh. “Along with the many friends here today, our community has been forever changed by his death but this building will forever serve as a recognition of his life. He lived the true American—and Houstonian—life.” Over the past two years, SALDEF Regional Director Bobby Singh has worked hand in hand with Congresswoman Fletcher and the local congressional delegation to ensure that the memory of Deputy Dhaliwal’s service and sacrifice is preserved. “Renaming a federal building for Deputy Dhaliwal in his beloved Houston is a deeply mean-

Houston: On Tuesday, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX07), in partnership with the United States Postal Service, held a ceremony to dedicate the post office at 315 Addicks-Howell Road in Houston, Texas as the Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal Post Office. The post office’s namesake, the late Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dhaliwal, was a nationally recognized figure for his successful efforts to be afforded a policy accommodation to wear his Sikh articles of faith while in uniform. He was killed during a traffic stop in September 2019. “I am honored to play a role in commemorating Deputy Dhaliwal’s remarkable life of selfless service,” said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher. “He represented the very best of our community: he worked for equality, connection, and community through his life of service to others. I was glad to work with a bipartisan delegation, our community partners, and those in the Sikh community, to pass legislation to rename this building the Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal Post Office.” “This remarkable commemoration serves as a permanent reminder of Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal’s lasting contributions to our community,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “We are thankful to Congresswoman Fletcher and the entire Texas delegation for honoring a committed public servant who touched countless lives and served as a trailblazer. He was a true hero who inspired everyone to love their neighbors.” “Anyone who came across Dep. Sandeep Dhaliwal was a better person for having known him. I’m thankful visitors to the newly renamed post office will see his name and be encouraged to learn how special he was,” said Commissioner Adrian Garcia, who originally hired Deputy Dhaliwal

MULTI-SKILLED PRODUCER

KTRK-TV the ABC Owned station in Houston, TX is looking for a hard-working, fiercely competitive, self-sufficient Multi-Skilled PRODUCER who can do it all and someone that has a desire to serve the community.

One of the feature films to be screened is Marathi film “Bittersweet”

Houston: Audiences are in for a treat when the 13th Annual Indian Film Festival of Houston gathers “in person” only at the Asia Society Friday, October 22 and Saturday, October 23. After a period in which people were not able to be together for the yearly event, they will once again enjoy a reception with food by Verandah Restaurant and entertainment by the musical group Moodafaruka both nights. In addition, there will be exceptional shorts, documentaries, and features. Several of the filmmakers are expected to attend and will answer questions at a Q & A session following their screening. The Festival attracts a multicultural audience. Some people who are only aware of Bollywood are surprised by the quality of productions from a variety of Indian locales. This year’s schedule includes thoughtful films as well as a dark comedy in languages such as Assamese, Marathi, Kashmiri, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Hindi, and

English—but each is subtitled, so the dialogue can be understood by all. One of the goals of the Indian Film Festival of Houston is to educate the public-at-large about diverse perspectives of the Indian Diaspora. The Festival has earned a wonderful reputation worldwide. Six films were selected from sixty-six submissions. Normally, more than one hundred are entered, but due to the difficulty of production during the pandemic, the requirements were modified. To be eligible, the film had to be from or about India, produced in 2019 (normally one year, not two) or later, and not have had a public showing in Houston. After the screenings on Saturday night, the Jury Awards Presentation will take place, followed by a photo session. For tickets and movie listings, please go to www.iffhinc.org. We look forward to seeing you at the Asia Society Texas Center.

ZEE5 “Rashmi Rocket”: Racing to the Finish Line in Life and On Track ZEE5 Global, the largest streaming platform for South Asian content, is bringing you an edge-ofthe-seat sports drama RASHMI ROCKET, headlined by the incredibly talented Taapsee Pannu. Made in collaboration with Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP & Mango People Media, RASHMI ROCKET has been directed by Akarsh Khurana. The highly anticipated film will premiere on ZEE5 Global on 15th October, and promises a unique storytelling experience with its unparalleled content. Watch the trailer here: https:// cutt.ly/ZEE5RashmiRocketTrailerUS Set in the salt marshes of Kutch, RASHMI ROCKET is about a young girl from a small village, blessed with a gift. She’s an incredibly fast runner who dreams of crossing the finish line. In the journey to fulfilling her dreams, she soon realizes that the race to the finish line is peppered with many hurdles, and what seems like an athletic contest turns into her personal battle for respect, honour, and even her very identity. Living up to the movie title, the trailer of RASHMI ROCKET showcases an inspiring narrative of its lead protagonist and her journey to become RASHMI ROCKET. It’s full of impactful dialogues, emotions, and a lot of drama with Taapsee Pannu’s acting prowess taking centre stage. The versatile actress appears strong and sensitive in equal parts which balances the palpable energy of the film. Giving her a thrust is the impeccable and talented supporting cast. Don’t miss the moment with Taapsee holding India’s flag that will surely give you goosebumps and the belief that the trailer was worth the wait! Always the one to take on hardhitting and socially relevant subjects, Taapsee Pannu says, “This film is very differently special. I’ve always been approached when either the script or the director is ready to make the film but one line of this story fell in my lap in Chennai and then from there to it becoming a full-fledged film has been a feeling I haven’t experienced with any other film before. Everyone was just so sure about the story from day 1 that it was never a tough job to convince any of the stakeholders to join hands and give their best for this film. Hence the result of this film will affect me a lot more than my other films. Also, I’m extremely proud of it.” Says filmmaker Akarsh Khurana, “When Pranjal and Taapsee got Nanda’s story idea to me, I was instantly hooked because while it is a film that covers a lot of ground, it is essentially about the triumph of the human spirit. It also offered the opportunity to tackle some serious issues, while still being emotional and gripping. I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into it. And now

I can’t wait for people to see the final outcome.” Adds producer Ronnie Screwvala, “So many immensely talented youth do not reach their full potential or even have opportunities owing to the obstacles the system and society throw at them. RASHMI ROCKET is one such example of someone who overcame those hurdles and faced those obstacles head on. It’s a story of resilience, determination and above all the fighting human spirit.” Says Pranjal Khandhdiya of Mango People Media, “While several films have been made on sports, RASHMI ROCKET isn’t just about struggles on the field, but in life; struggles that women in the sports arena continue to face. The story needed to be brought to life with great sensitivity and craft and who better than Taapsee to take on the challenge.” Archana Anand, Chief Business Officer, ZEE5 Global, said, “Audiences today worldwide look for stories that not only entertain but also those that inspire and uplift them; slice of life, rich stories about real people and real situations. Richly adding now to our offering on ZEE5 is RASHMI ROCKET, a gripping story that brings us a very real narrative, brought to life through riveting performances, and we’re sure this story will touch a deep chord with our audiences.” Produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Neha Anand and Pranjal Khandhdiya, ‘RASHMI ROCKET’ is written by Nanda Periyasamy, Aniruddha Guha and Kanika Dhillon and also stars Su-
