September 11 Commemorative Events at Arya Samaj of Greater Houston
A 5 KM walk took place in collaboration with Sewa International and Houston Durga Bari.
By Shivam Nayyar Houston: In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of September 11, Arya Samaj Greater Houston held two events this past Saturday – hosting a blood donation drive preceded by a 5 km walk, both in partnership with other community organizations and to promote a healthy lifestyle and selfless giving back to community. The day started at 7:00 am for its volunteer team, getting ready for a 5 km walk in collaboration
with Sewa International (“Sewa”) and Houston Durga Bari Society. On this clear cool morning, about 25 enthusiasts started off from the Arya Samaj parking lot taking the McClendon to Bishop Forenza trail going south and then looping around Brays Bayou heading east to the Brays Bayou Playground near Eldridge Parkway, before the corner back towards Arya Samaj along the northern leg of the loop running parallel to Schiller Road. Upon return, many stayed back to participate in the blood donation
drive. Arya Samaj Greater Houston also hosted it’s second blood donation drive of 2021 in conjunction with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, supported by Hindus of Greater Houston (“HGH”) and Sewa. The September 11th commemoration blood donation drive was an even greater success than the record setting April 2021 blood donation drive, an annual event every spring as part of Arya Samaj’s community health fair. This time, we had 35 pre-

registered donors, and 11 walk-in donors, donating 40 units in total including several double-RBC donations, and improved across all metrics from the records set in April 2021, which had rung in 36 units of whole blood, plasma, and double-RBC donations. Our events represent the wideranging objective of Arya Samaj, namely, to promote the wellbeing of all – physical, spiritual, and social progress of every human being. This is the sixth principle from among the Ten Principles of Arya

Houston: Sewa international’s charity golf event to commemorate 9/11 had a successful start at the Southwyck Golf Course in Pearland. Ed Thompson, Texas State Representative, District 29, teed off the inaugural shot after a moment of silence in memory of the brave victims of 9/11. Chad Roberts from the Pearland Police Department came out to support the event and handed out the awards. The tournament was held in a four-person scramble format, and seventy-two players from across Houston participated and competed fiercely for the awards. Among those vying for top places were
members of an all-women team who were golfing for the first time, and two 12-year-olds. Gitesh Desai, President of Sewa International, Houston Chapter welcomed all golfers and guests at the golf tournament. He talked about Sewa International and its service projects. He mentioned that the tournament was an outstanding charity event with a great blend of golfers and volunteers’ spirit for raising funds and awareness about selfless service. He highlighted that the tournament was a fun-filled day of bonding and camaraderie - a true display of Sewa’s mantra - “Together we serve better”.
This event was planned, organized, and managed by Sewa volunteers, several of them school children, who turned out on a glorious late summer day to support this cause. Funds raised from the event will be used for service activities. The event was the culmination of months of planning, preparation, and hard work by the Sewa organizing team led by Anup Bhasin and Jaivijay Ramu, who have ambitions of turning this into an annual event. Anup Bhasin of Sewa International’s Houston Chapter thanked the sponsors

‘Bhoot Police’: A Blast for Saif Ali Khan and All of Us Watching By Shubhra Gupta
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Yami Gautam, Jaaved Jafferi Director: Pawan Kripalani Rating: 2.5 stars Vibhooti and Chiraunji have to be amongst the most original names to grace a bhoot-pret-bhatki-hui-aatma (ghosts, lost souls) Bollywood outing. The moment you hear them, you crack a smile. And that smile stays in place for quite a while in this supernaturalhorror comedy featuring a couple of crack ghost-busters, till it runs out of steam. Elder bhai Vibhooti (Saif Ali Khan) plays it for laughs. He is in it for the lolly, and the ladies, the more credulous the better. The younger one, all serious and solemn, aka Chikoo (Arjun Kapoor), is a believer. He is convinced there are ghosts, and other-worldly creatures, and that their job, as ‘tantriks’, is to help people get rid of these evil spirits. In which pursuit, he goes about clutching an old book, and muttering mantras, while the ‘bada bhai’ hoots and claps, and rolls his eyes. It’s when a questing lass (Yami Gautam) whistles them up to her Dharamshala tea estate, where she lives with her sister (Jacqueline Fernandes) that the game changes. A very scary spirit, called a ‘kichkandi’ (nice, creepy name), is about. The brothers have to banish the said ‘aatma’ in order to get her petrified workforce to breathe easy. From here on, it’s open season.
schtick, can we please junk this one?) and spitting out black juice. Is it for real, or all smoke and mirrors? But while it stays in the let’smake-fun-of-ghosts zone, it really is funny. Especially when Saif is on song, which is quite often: he is having a blast, and makes sure we do, too. Arjun Kapoor fits the part too, as do the girls. What’s truly a saving grace is that nothing gets too dark. And no one takes themselves seriously at all, even if you feel like ruffling Ms Fernandez’s perfect blowout: there’s a ghost in front of her! But it does get

Little girls who mysteriously appear and disappear, a dog with an ancient bone which is deposited under a bed, a ‘havan’ to banish bad spirits, a plot to wrap wool around eyes. A cop (Jaaved Jafferi) who’s hot on the heels of the two brothers shows up, just to stir things up. Monsters come crawling out of the walls, and all is set for the final showdown. In between are some nice little jibes about the stuff that’s going on around us, which is the real horror show. Vibhooti demands GST on a ‘bhoot bhagao’ transaction, snarkily brings up the ‘beti bachao beti padhao’ slogan, and cosies up to a good-looking supplicant who calls him ‘Guruji’, and pleads with him to go back with her and ‘make America great again’. One random fellow says, ‘I’m the baba who sold his Maruti’. Yes, no monks, and no Ferraris here. ‘Do hazaar ke note mat dena, pata nahin kab band ho jaayen’, says another. And this, my favourite, from Vibhooti Baba: ‘I see dead people.’ Haha.
too long. At one point a character says, ‘enough of this horror show’. True, true. These guys will be back, we are told I don’t need a crystal ball to tell you that there will be a sequel. Get set for more fun and games. -- Indian Express

Dhoni vs Rohit to Kickstart IPL from UAE beginning September 19 By Nagraj Gollupudi
Dubai: The remainder of IPL 2021 in the UAE will resume in Dubai on September 19 with MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings taking on Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians. The fixtures were unveiled on Sunday, with a total of 31 matches spread across 27 days. Click here to access the full schedule The Super Kings will return to these same shores where they finished second from last on the points table in IPL 2020. However, they have bounced back this season to be placed second, with five wins in seven matches. That opening fixture of the second leg will be followed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore taking on the Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi. Like the Super Kings, the Royal Challengers are in contention for the playoffs, and are currently placed third. The Knight Riders, meanwhile, need a succession of wins to remain in the race. The matches will be held across three venues. Dubai will host 13 games, including Qualifier 1 (October 10) and the final on October 15, while Sharjah, which will host a blockbuster first game between Super Kings and Royal Challengers on September 24, is also slated to host Qualifier 2 (October 11) and the Eliminator (October 13)
Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians vs MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings: here we go again BCCI/IPL
as part of their 10 matches. The Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi will host eight matches. There will be seven doubleheaders in all during the UAE leg. There will be no change in the timings of the matches: afternoon matches will start at 3.30pm IST while the evening games are scheduled for 7.30pm starts. The BCCI’s top brass - president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah - were in the UAE last week to finalise preparations for the tournament. The IPL was postponed in May
after members from a number of teams tested positive for Covid-19 amid a devastating second wave that hit India. The tournament will be followed by the BCCI’s hosting of the T20 World Cup immediately in UAE from October 17. Crowds will be allowed at the IPL for the first time since the 2019 edition. ESPNcricinfo understands IPL chief operating officer Hemang Amin relayed that information to the franchises on Tuesday, saying fans will be back for the second half of the IPL in
“reduced capacity”. The IPL, which was suspended in early May, resumes from September 19 and will be played at three venues in the UAE: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. While the IPL issued a media release on Wednesday, calling the return of fans a “momentous” occasion and adding that it would allow “limited seating” at the three venues due to the UAE government’s regulations during the Covid-19 pandemic, it did not specify the percentage of tickets that would be put on sale.
The exercise, though, will be a rehearsal for both the local governments in the UAE and the BCCI for the 2021 men’s T20 World Cup, which starts on October 17. While the first round of the World Cup will be played in Oman, the Super 12s and the knockouts will be hosted by the UAE. This is the second edition of the IPL to be played during the pandemic. In 2020, too, the BCCI had shifted the IPL to the UAE where the entire tournament was played behind closed doors. This year’s IPL started in India on April 9, also behind closed doors, but was suspended indefinitely on May 3 after several members from four different franchises at two different venues tested positive for Covid-19. With the prospect of the outbreak growing further, the BCCI was forced to suspend the tournament after 29 matches. The primary reason behind bringing back crowds could be the fact that the vast majority of the public in the UAE has been fully vaccinated. While it is not clear what the various conditions put in place for overseas fans will be, one mandatory rule is likely to be that they need to be fully vaccinated. Fans can buy tickets for the remainder of the tournament, from September 16, on the official website www.iplt20.com or on PlatinumList.net. -- ESPN Cricinfo

Forgiveness -- A Key to Self-Empowerment For over a quarter century, Swami Mukundananda, a globally renowned teacher of Spirituality, Vedic scholar, and Bhakti saint, has been travelling far and wide, awakening and guiding thousands of spiritual seekers. Wherever he goes he attracts huge audiences and answers questions put forth by the audience. Many of these questions & answers are compiled on Swamiji’s book called Spiritual Dialectics © Below is an excerpt on a question that is commonly asked – about forgiveness. A devotee asks: I have a question about relationships with other souls while on the spiritual path. My business partner swindled the business and drove me into the toughest two years of my life. Today I am settled again, but I am unable to forgive him. How to get peace of mind when someone has wronged us to no end? Swamiji’s answer: This material world is like the prison house of God, souls that have turned their backs to Him have been put here. So, we cannot expect the people of this world to behave like Saints. There will always be people who will come to cheat us and on some occasions they may even succeed. That is life. We all get cheated once in a while. But the important thing is to learn to take it in our stride. That is where the quality of forgiveness comes in. If we continue to harbor resentment towards those who have wronged us, we will be unable to progress spiritually. Resentment acts like a poison in the mind filling it with bitterness. And we keep reliving the sour experience within, pinned down to the past.

Swami Mukundananda
Someone aptly said:” Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” On the spiritual path we must be careful not to nurture ill feelings towards anyone, realizing they will harm us more than anyone else. Forgiveness is a sublime personality trait that immediately releases all bitterness from the mind. It is a favor we do, not to the other person but to ourselves. The lives of saintly people are full of inspiring stories of how they forgave their wrongdoers, and even succeeded in winning them over by their love. A person made an attempt on the life of Mahatma Gandhi while he was living in South Africa. Mahatma Gandhi refused to hate the man. He said, “I shall love him and win his love.”. One year later that same man came and apologized to Mahatma Gandhi and wept for forgiveness. This is the characteristic of great personalities; they refuse to allow their minds to dwell on hatred towards anyone. - Swami Mukundananda: Swami Mukundananda, a world-
