Power Tube India Embarks on joint Venture for Geo Magmatic Power Plants H O U S TO N : P o w e r Tu b e International has concluded a joint venture partnership with Kuldip Singh, owner of Power Tube India to cover the entire Indian Sub-continent which was selected for its unique geopolitical, ethnic, geographic and historical associations with its neighbors under historical considerations. Singh was selected over 13 other international firms for the JV and will also provide an assembly plant for the Power Tube system. The Power Tube is a geothermal magmatic driven generator. One 10 megawatt unit can eliminate 400 tons of atmospheric pollution, the equivalent of 1 million gallons of fuel or of 1240 tons of coal. It provides a total non-contamination environment, does not produce acid rain, create landscape eyesores or visual pollution or destroy the fauna or flora. The Power Tube system has taken almost 11 years to develop and has replaced successfully the

usual power generation technology that is over 150 years old. New technology, materials and scientific calculations had to be developed to get Power Tube to where it is today. Long periods of testing on two prior prototypes, MB 2000 and MB 2002 eliminated any doubts about the technology and innovation developed the knowledge base to assemble, test and certify the commercial prototype, Argus A10. One Power Tube unit of 10 MW needs only 10x10 meter land, where as other conventional systems need minimum 10 Acres. One 10MW unit needs 3 months to install, others need minimum 3 years to install For a larger unit, the 10MW Power Tube, the savings to the environment over one year (compared to equivalent hydrocarbon production) would be to eliminate the equivalent of burning 1 million gallons of fossil fuels, 1,450 tons of coal for steam

or 400 tons of pollutants into the atmosphere. Power Tube’s technology will also eliminate the danger of contamination of underground aquifers. It will not contribute to acid rain, prevents global warming and does not use any atomic fuels. It will provide a higher standard of living in third world countries by providing clean affordable energy that will not devastate the landscape. The Power Tube system is the logical Solution to curbing vast levels of energy pollution since it does not consume hydrocarbons and so does not generate any pollution or acid rain. The electrical energy does not consume natural resources but comes from a renewable resource and is produced at a low cost. Finally, the equipment leaves a small visual footprint and requires minimum maintenance. “This new product has the potential to provide a higher standard of living in Third World

Singh has plans to build 4 or 5 assembly plants for the Power Tube in various parts of India as well as separate plants for the drilling equipment. The Indian operations will be headquartered in Chandigarh where Singh already has an IT business, Allied Technology. Singh has several businesses in Houston and has over 40 years of experience as an electrical contractor in India. Himachal Pradesh is reportedly considering experimenting with Power Tube Technology according to HP chief minister Prem Kumar

Dhumal after a recent meeting with the Singh in New Delhi. He said that the state was also working on solar and wind energy generation technologies and would explore the possibilities of experimentation of Power Tube, low cost, non-polluting and silent power generation system also which could supplement the power demand of the state. Singh advised Dhumal of the benefits of the Power Tube system and invited him to visit power plant sites in USA. He said that Himachal Pradesh had varied climatic zones

and the technology would be of immense benefit to meet the local electricity requirements of consumers. Singh has also been approached by officials of the Jammu & Kashmir to see the feasibility of beginning operations in the state. Inderjit Singh CEO of Power Tube India Chandigarh visited Power Tube Houston for the Technical conference. He says that the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh will visit Houston in the third week July for further discussion on installing Power Tubes in India.

Amul to Take Taste of India to US, Europe ANAND (TOI) : The cradle of India’s White Revolution, the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd — better known as Amul Dairy — will now take the big leap of entering the US and European markets. The ‘Taste of India’ would reach the doorsteps of ethnic South Asians living abroad as the country’s premier dairy cooperative plans to set up manufacturing bases outside India. This decision was taken during the 65th annual general meeting held on Saturday. Amul will initially produce ghee

and paneer. “There are around four million Indians and six million Asians settled in the US. We are exploring the country to tap the real

market potential of brand Amul, which is still not realized there,’’ Amul Dairy’s managing director

Rahul Kumar told TOI. The dairy co-operative union will finalize the exact location for the proposed facilities within a month. While California, Virginia and Wisconsin are considered to be milk-rich states of the US, the concentration of Indians , especially Gujaratis, is more in states like New Jersey and New York. The urge for ghee among ethnic Indians is satisfied in the US largely by Canadabased players like Nanak and

Airlines Focus on Holiday Trip Packages to Generate Growth NEW DELHI (DH): Trying to cash in on the peak summer travel season, an increasing number of Indian and international airlines are transforming themselves into wholesome travel managers, providing hotel bookings, sight-seeing tours and even local conveyance, both overseas and within the country. According to aviation analysts, over 13 million Indians travelled abroad for business and leisure last year. “Holiday packages provide airlines with a value-added product which guarantees increase in revenues especially in the holiday season. Even hotels and other partners benefit from the package,” Amber Dubey, director, aerospace, for KPMG said. Air India gets 20% of its revenues from holiday packages during the holiday season. Vacationers and business travellers globally look forward to the ‘one-stop’ shop concept like ‘dial a holiday’ and ‘web-based’ travel and stay plans. “Air India was the first airline in India to start it. Internationally this is a well- known and successful revenue model for airlines,” saying that Air India started holiday packages in early 2000s. Vijay Mallya-promoted Kingfisher Airlines was among the first to offer holiday packages this summer season through a membership program. Baba Ramdev’s Ten Point Charter to Free India from Black Money By S GanGadharan MUMBAI (DNA) Baba Ramdev’s ten-point charter of demands to usher in a new India freed from the vice-like grip of black money has only been cursorily dealt with in the media, with the man behind it stealing all the limelight. Of Ramdev’s demands, at least one — the removal of high denomination currency notes from the economy to prevent internal black money generation — is too important to be dismissed out of hand. In a land where currency is still king, and small transactions a legion, the policy tilt towards issue of bank notes of Rs500 ($12) and Rs1,000 ($22) and whether this fosters the climate for illicit transactions need a critical look. US and UK have done it Let’s consider the situation in the US and the UK. In the US, the highest denomination bank note is $100 and in the UK, it is 50 pound sterling. As a multiple of the basic currency unit, it is 100 in the US and 50 in Britain. In India, however, the highest value bank note is 1,000 times the basic currency unit — a rupee. These two nations have avoided higher denomination only because they facilitate corruption, money laundering, and other acts

of malfeasance. With advanced payment settlements in place, the use of cash is restricted to small transactions. Clearly, the monetary authorities in the US and UK have found a link between high value bank notes and clandestine dealings, and this has influenced their approach to printing security notes. In India, too, we have seen in recent years shady dealings of this sort, and Parliament itself saw a display of huge chunks of currency. Getting back to Ramdev’s charter, it goes on to observe in a language that economists might be proud of, “Today, we have Rs100 lakh crore of black money inside our economy and that’s because Rs1000, Rs500 notes make it easier for corrupt people to transport, carry and store large sums of money for purpose of illegal and corrupt dealings. These notes should be removed immediately. There is no use of these notes when 80 crore + people in our country live on a daily income of Rs20 (0.50 cents) and never get the luxury of even seeing a Rs500 note.” There is an element of truth here. Because of the short life span of smaller denomination notes, they have been coinized. (By the end of

Baba Ramdev started the fast against corruption in India, bribes are a way of doing business in the homeland. Black money or unaccounted money floats in the economy daily trading hands in business transactions. The corruption is so rampant that the government is now thinking of ways to curb it by giving all its citizens a bio-metric ID number. There is a lot of cleaning up to do, but it is definitely a start in the right direction for India

this month, even the 25 paise coin will cease to be legal tender). This means more demand for notes in the denomination of Rs10, 20, 50 and 100. But even the availability of these notes — as a proportion of the total notes issued in value terms — has shrunk. The Reserve Bank of India says that its policy in this regard is influenced by the demand for notes of various denominations, the replacement of soiled notes and reserve requirements. Of course, economic growth is also one deciding factor. But it is still difficult to accept that the demand for smaller value notes has abated and hence the drop in both their value and volume in relation to the total over time. The ATM factor More probably, practical considerations have come to the fore. Printing high value security notes is economical. As the RBI has noted in its last annual report, the cost incurred in this respect has

nearly doubled to Rs.2,754 crore ($600M) in 2009-10, from Rs1,440 crore ($313M) in 2004-05. A new factor was the widespread use of ATMs. Started in a small way in the late eighties, now the use of ATMs is widespread, and the use is largely confined to withdrawals of cash. Here, stocking these machines with higher denomination notes makes sense, as the need for replenishment at longer intervals helps banks save both operational and capital costs. Thus, the bias towards Rs500 ($12) and Rs1,000 ($22) notes is technology- driven - the spreading network of ATMs. The irony is that while the rich can avail of modern modes of payment, the common man’s cash needs are rather small. Yet, the pattern of bank notes in circulation favours the former at the expense of the latter. The larger issue remains. The amount of black money in the economy and the rate of its growth are disturbing. But demonetisation of high value notes may not help much as the ill-gotten wealth might be kept in gold or invested in real estate. Rather, if such an effort is made, instead of a brief case, both the bribe taker and the bribe giver may be obliged to carry a suit case - inconvenient no doubt but not that difficult. The causes of the proliferation of unaccounted wealth have to be tackled first - why is it that without greasing palms, one cannot secure a ration card, a driving licence? A frontal attack on black money must be the first step. A rapid switch-over to noncash modes of payment must be made. This will pave the way for a currency management policy in which smaller denomination notes are preferred. Corruption , Kautilya wrote in his Arthasasthra, is like fish drinking water. It exists but is hard to detect. Baba Ramdev’s charter of demands and the demonetization of high value notes can address the issue once it comes to the surface; but to nip it in the bud, a new national ethos, a conducive tax policy and compliance regime, and effective regulatory and enforcement machinery must be in place. The Augean stables have to be cleaned first. Are our political masters up to the task?

Tatas Overtake Ambanis on Market Wealth

Babulbhai

NEW DELHI (ET): Tatas may not be known for being on the stock-based rich lists, but changing market dynamics have led to the salt-to-software conglomerate overtaking the combined market wealth of the two Ambani groups put together. The share prices have been tumbling in recent past for both the Reliance groups, led by the billionaire brothers Mukesh and Anil Ambani, and the analysts put the blame on a string of controversies surrounding them for many months now. On the other hand, a host of Tata group firms have grown stronger, in terms of stock market valuation, while shrugging off an overall bearish sentiments in the broader market and even some controversies related to them. In the process, the stock market wealth of the entire Tata group has grown to close to Rs 4,40,000 crore - highest for any corporate house and bigger than the combined figure of the two Ambani groups together at about Rs 3,67,000 crore. This marks a sharp reversal of the things seen about an year ago, when Tatas were smaller than the Mukesh

Ambani group alone. Tatas have about 30 listed companies, while the Mukesh Ambani group has only two. As per the latest market value of individual groups, Tatas rank on the top, followed by Mukesh-led Reliance group at second position

Ratan Tata

with about Rs 2,85,000 crore. The Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-ADAG), which ranked third after the Mukesh-led RIL group and Tatas a year ago, does not figure even among the top 10 groups now. In the past one year, R-ADAG’s market wealth has plunged by over Rs 60,000 crore to close to Rs 82,000 crore now. The Mukesh-led group’s valuation has also fallen by about Rs 73,000 crore, but that of Tatas has grown by more than Rs 1,00,000 crore in

the same period. The Tata companies that have added significant market wealth in the past one year include TCS, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Titan, Tata Coffee, Tata Chemicals and Rallis. On the other hand, all the companies of the two Ambani groups, barring the smallest of them Reliance Broadcast Network, have lost market value since July last year. In the MDA group, Reliance Industries has lost about Rs 72,000 crore, while the only other listed firm Reliance Industrial Infra Ltd has also lost about Rs 650 crore. Among ADAG firms, the losses are about Rs 21,000 crore for RCOM, about Rs 20,000 crore for R-Power, Rs 14,000 crore or R-Infra and over Rs 5,000 crore for Reliance Capital. While the Reliance companies have been traditionally known as very aggressive when it comes to the stock market, Tatas have been mostly known as conservatives on this front. Investors have historically preferred Reliance stocks for wealth creation, but situation is changing drastically as both Ambani groups are giving below-market returns.

He said the country is still facing infrastructure and utilities issues, but there’s been a dramatic improvement since the company launched a plant there in 2003. Miller said the advantages to doing business in India still greatly outweigh the disadvantages. “The growing economy is impressive,” he said. “They’re hard–working. It’s been a good relationship and a growing business for us.” Fellow panelist Robert Johnson is the CEO of Cimcor, a Merrillville company that develops Internet security software. Johnson said the India market is “exciting” and he plans to enter it in the next six to nine months. “We like a country with mature markets and strong financial institutions in place,” he said. “Truly India meets those criteria.” Johnson said his company was originally drawn to selling its product and expanding its market to other countries but assured that the research and development of his product would remain in Merrillville. “We’re dedicated to trying to help the economy of Northwest Indiana,” he said. The symposium was initiated by a grant IU Northwest Associate Professor Surekha Rao received from the Department of Education’s

Center for International Business Education Research. Rao invited local business and community leaders. “This symposium provided me an insight I did not have before about doing business in India,” Shabbir said. “It also provided me with an opportunity to by speak with the consult of India as to what kind of regulations and rules are required.” (In the photo: Mukta D. By roB EarnShaw MERRILLVILLE (NWIT): A growing economy, low labor costs, a stable political environment and investor–friendly policies are just some of the reasons India is calling for business with Northwest Indiana. An Indiana University Northwest symposium Thursday on doing business in India welcomed Mukta Tomar, consul general of India in Chicago, who provided a general sense of the business climate in her home country. The symposium at the Indian American Cultural Center included local business leaders who either have a partnership in India or were in the process of entering that market. Tomar said the relations between the U.S. and India has seen remarkable transformation during the last decade. “Today our economic ties are robust and growing,” she said. A growth rate of 8.6 percent in gross domestic product, a young population, and a country with the second–largest pool of scientists and engineers in the world were some of the factors Tomar pointed out as beneficial for a business relationship with India. Miller’s Precision Enterprises in Hammond has been doing business with India since 2003. Mike Miller, chairman of the company that produces Tyvek garments, said the company was first drawn to India because of its stable democracy,

Daryl Harper Blamed for Bad Decisions by India

KINGSTON, Jamaica (TOI): Umpire Daryl Harper came in for some scathing criticism from the Indian cricket team, which blasted the Australian for his poor decisions during the first cricket Test against the West Indies. Such was the exasperation that a senior member of the side said

pressmen approaching him. Indians were upset that Harper made at least three critical errors against India and three in favor of West Indies during the match. “Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh and Dhoni himself for done in; (Darren) Bravo twice and once (Shivnarine) Chanderpaul

The opinions of many somehow seem to converge that Daryl Harper is controversial and known to make poor decisions that affected India’s Test results against the West Indies. The Indian players believe that Daryl made three errors that ruled in favor of West Indies during the match, something that the Indians now detest

that whole team wishes that Harper does not officiate in the third Test. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni did little to hide his disgust at the standard of umpiring in the Test, which they won by 63 runs to take a 1-0 lead. “If correct decisions were made, the game would have ended much earlier and we would have been in the hotel by now,” Dhoni said at the post match press conference. The Australian would stand for one last time when India take on West Indies in the third Test at Dominica from July 6. “We don’t want him -- you can quote it as the reaction of the entire Indian team,” said a very senior member of the side. Though Dhoni did not name anyone of the two umpires officiating in the match --- Ian Gould (England) and Harper -several Indian players openly termed the latter as the centre of their ire. “It’s Daryl Harper six not out,” said another senior cricketer as soon as he saw a bunch of Indian

benefitted,” chimed in another Indian cricketer, bristling with aggression. Raina was given out caught in the leg-trap off Devendra Bishoo and television replays suggested no edge from either bat or gloves of the batsman. Harbhajan Singh was ruled out leg before wicket when the ball clearly was seen going way above the height of the stumps. Dhoni was cleanly caught at point region off Bishoo but the bowler had cut the return crease in his bowling run-up and the delivery should have been called a no-ball. All three decisions in question were given by Harper in India’s second innings. Then, when West Indies batted for the last time, there were confident appeals against Bravo and Chanderpaul which were not upheld. The controversial Australian umpire is regarded worldwide as the worst umpire in the ICC list of elite umpires.
