Indians Air their Views on Steve Jobs’ Resignation from Apple

SAN JOSE: Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple has stepped down due to health reasons with Timothy Cooks, COO, taking helm. Known as the guy who revolutionized the computer industry along with Steve Wozniak, a computer club guru and brilliant

computer engineer he ran into at Hewlett Packard, their destiny was tied together from day one. Attributed as a global visionary, Steve Jobs has pioneered and made Macintosh products - the ipod, ipad, itunes, iphone - a counter culture lifestyle, something that has bordered on becoming a technology cult following of sorts - associated with romance, youth and creative inspiration. Apple has changed the world culture by its innovative and stylish devices. Apple shares today are at $383.58 with over 11 million shares being traded daily. The company has an annual $1.58 billion profit, and sits on about $18 billion surplus with zero debt. Indo American News has been using Macintosh computers and devices as technology to aid in its weekly publication since 1982. Known to be leaders in desktop publishing, Indo American has heavily relied on Macintosh computers to help advance its design

to benefit its readers and advertisers. We are sad to see him resign due to health reasons. Born on February 24, 1955, Steve Jobs was born to Joanne Simpson, a speech therapist and Abdulfattah “John” Jandali, a Syrian Political Science Professor. Given up for adoption by his parents, he was adopted by a lowermiddle class couple, Paul a machinist from the Midwest and Clara Jobs, under the guarantee they send him to college. Steve Jobs credits Imogene Hill his 4th grade Cooks now CEO teacher who engaged and inspired him in real learning experiences. Steve Jobs Joined Atari the first videogame company in 1974, created by Nolan Bushnell in 1972. He got his boss to fund his trip to India to gain spiritual enlightenment. To his dismay, he found the guru to be a conman. Two years later, just 21, Steve Jobs along with Wozniak started Apple. This was mainly inspired by his cultivating apples at the All-One farm having joined a hippie community. Steve Jobs released the first computer the Apple I and marketed it at $666.66 each that earned them $774,000. Three years later, Apple II, increased sales to 700 percent making him $139 million, making Steve Jobs a millionaire by the age of 25. By 1980 Apple publicly traded and was valued at $1.2 billion on the first day of trading. Apple has had its share of ups and downs, failures, and faced stiff competition from IBM. Samsung, Google and Microsoft have

taken turns eclipsing Apple from time to time. Somehow, Apple has kept bobbing back up vowing its fans with better and fascinating devices. Steve Jobs’ genius was to diversify revenue streams right from the start. Purchasing an Animation studio from George Lucas and renaming it Pixar Studios, he poured in $50 million of his own money to get it going. It started making realistic animation forays accomplishing Toystory, Cars, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles. Pixar movies helped Jobs net $4.1 billion. Disney which paired with Pixar Studios and had major successes in revenue wanted to acquire Pixar, making Steve Jobs the single largest shareholder in Disney. Steve Jobs has resigned before in the 90s leaving his CEO position to start a Hardware and Software company, NeXT Inc. Apple soon bought NeXT for $429 million in 1997 to help with research and development into new, out of this world products. Diagnosed with a rare form of Pancreatic cancer - a neuro endocrine tumor which Steve Jobs had to have surgically removed in 2004, and a liver transplant in

A younger Jobs holding his company logo, a real apple.

2009, Jobs has been very guarded about his health condition. Neehar, a previous employee of Apple for eight years, says “I am saddened to see Steve Jobs leave. I know he will guide the company as far as his health permits. Steve Jobs is a visionary and the products he has created are phenomenal. The culture he has created will survive for ages. Indians have been a vital part of Apple’s fabric and not only to Apple but in contributing skills to many of the world corporates in design, technology, and management. Neehar is now with AppExchange, an online marketplace for cloud computing applications, an original partner to Salesforce.com Many Indians have spoken on facebook, twitter and social media about Steve Jobs’ resignation: Blogger “Ankur” noted on “iphonehelp” that Apple’s image is closely associated with Jobs, the company might find it hard to cope without him. “Jobs is iconic, has numerous fans and is considered a wizard. Apple products sell because he holds them high.” On Rediff.com “Rohit Bajaj” says Jobs is his “hero” “always ahead of his time… his extraordinary intuition has defined the computer industry for years.” Neeraj, another reader says, “Steven Paul Jobs is a great inspiration for me and of course for all youngsters … A true worker and an innovative man, wishing him a quick recovery.” Surbhi Jain a reader of Hindustan Times, lamented Mr. Jobs’ decision to stand down: “I’m sad… and will miss the novelties in apple devices.”

“Mulkeet Shah” draws a parallel between Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian cricketer and Steve Jobs saying, “iextremely sad will miss an iconic figure a lot! SteveJobs! The SachinTendulkar of the gadget industry!” Arvind Malhotra, an associ-

ate professor at the University of North Carolina, and an expert on Apple’s strategy says, “They’re sitting on a cash pile,” Jobs always grew from within. If [the] lack of his vision and availability causes the future pipeline not to be there, that’s when the acquisition model comes into play.” In an email to all employees, Cook said: “I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change. I cherish and celebrate Apple’s unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that—it is in our DNA. We(will) continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.” He also paid tribute to Jobs: “Steve has been an incredible leader and mentor to me, as well as to the entire executive team and our amazing employees. We are really looking forward to Steve’s ongoing guidance and inspiration as our Chairman.”

Welch Allyn Eyes Indian Healthcare Market

Babulbhai

CHENNAI (Hindu): The 96-year-old family-owned $ 700 million Welch Allyn, Inc. of the U.S., a well-known global name in the field of frontline diagnostic products, has set its eyes firmly on the burgeoning Indian healthcare market. As a part of its five-year business plan for India, Welch Allyn has inked a partnership agreement with Chennai-based Garuda Med Equipments. The objective of this partnership arrangement is to consolidate its product marketing efforts in India under the Garuda platform. Welch Allyn has already had an alliance with BPL. With its tie up with Garuda, the American company has not only re-jigged its game plan, but also conveyed seriousness about its strategy in India. “We see a lot of growth opportunity in India, which will be a focus country for us,” said Con Hickey, Senior Vice-President (Asia Pacific) of Welch Allyn. Addressing a press conference

here on Tuesday, Mr. Hickey said Welch Allyn had for decades been developing state-of-the-art products designed to meet the needs of the primary care market place. Though not big in size, the American company, he said, had been a dominant supplier of diagnostic

products related to eye and ear care. Given the size of population and the growing awareness among people for wellness, India presents

Welch Allyn a huge opportunity. At the moment, the diagnostic product requirements of India are met from its overseas production bases, he said. To a question, he said a production facility in Asia could be considered if the business volume picked up in the region. Garuda, according to its Director L. Muthu Krishnan, is in the process of setting up 40 region-wise dealers across the country. “Each state will have a minimum of one service point,” he added. Welch Allyn has named Garuda its exclusive distributors for frontline diagnostic products, cardiopulmonary and low end vitals (SPOT, SPOT LXi and ProBP). Welch Allyn also launched CP 50 ECG (electrocardiograph) and Connex ProBP 3400 digital blood pressure device in the Indian market. “These are simple and smart products with connectivity features,” explained Francis Sim, Director (Regional Sales) of Welch Allyn.

‘Bol’ Gets Indians Talking - Riveting Story Line, Multiple Societal Issues

By Ravinder Bawa DELHI (Dawn): Facing stiff competition from Salman Khan’s Bodyguard on Eid, Pakistani film Bol is managing to hold its own thanks to word of mouth publicity. Dealing with multiple issues ranging from misogyny to prostitution to fanaticism, Bol is director Shoaib Mansoor’s second offering after Khuda Ke Liye. Bol was released alongside mega blockbuster Bodyguard, ‘That girl in yellow boots’ and ‘Mummy Punjabi’. Bol offers a riveting storyline and great acting, with people publicising the film more than the PR agencies. For starters, there is actress Vidya Balan who says, “Loved Bol! Love the performance of the father. The boy who played Saifuddin was cute. My heart went out to him.” Tushar Pahwa, from the audience, puts it, “Bol is a ubiquitous filmwhether a Muslim family in Lahore or a Hindu family in Bihar, everyone can relate to it. Women and transgenders are disrespected in India and Pakistan both. A good gift for Eid indeed.” Many gave tickets to family and friends in beautiful gift envelopes as eidi. “This was my eidi to my sister The film’s message has been well received. I felt my sister must see this movie as an example,” says Shahnawaz Siddique, a shop keeper. Film critic Taran Adarsh says, “I think the word of mouth publicity is

Samir Soni, who acted in films like Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham, Fashion and others explains, “To coexist and prosper we need to have a better understanding of each other and issues that affect us. We notice we are similar and this ends fear and resentment. Cinema is perhaps the most important medium that brings us closer and removes political boundaries.” The social theme of the movie has attracted the intelligentsia. Rukmini Sen, a senior entertainment journalist, describes the film as “rebellious, brave and original”. She adds, “Bol talks about the state of the third gender in Pakistan. Condition of women and third gender is pathetic in most parts of Asia so the film represents the silence of many of us. Bol deconstructs issues of sexuality and sexual identity very sensitively. It sees the issue in its larger context of patriarchy, feudalism, religion and nation state.” The treatment of the story is much talked about. Satish Sharma, a painter by profession, appreciated the director’s strokes. “It was a joy to see how the director puts some of the old world wisdom in the right perspective. Whenever the father of the actress tried to escape a situation by quoting old quotes, she would correct him by putting his lines in the correct perspective. I thought it was intelligently handled.”

Toyota to Hire 1,500 People in India by 2012 Ford Motors to Build $1 Billion

NEW DELHI (ET): Japanese car-maker Toyota today said it will hire about 1,500 people for its Indian operations by next year as it gradually expands its production capacity in the country. The company, which is present in India through a joint venture with the Kirloskar Group, is investing Rs 1,650 crore to ramp up its production capacity by one lakh units and for increasing localisation of components by 2014. “We will be hiring about 1,500 permanent employees by 2012 to meet our expansion demand. In addition to this, we will hire some contract workers a l s o , ” To y o t a Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Deputy Managing Director (Commercial) Shekar Viswanathan told PTI on the sidelines of an Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) summit here. The company will hire people across various disciplines as the expansion programme gradually unfolds, he added. TKM currently employs around

4,500 employees at its two facilities in Bangalore, of which 70 per cent are permanent employees. At present, the company is expanding the combined capacity of its two facilities in Bangalore to 2.1 lakh units from 1.5 lakh units

by 2012. Subsequently, the capacity at the first plant will be hiked further to 1,00,000 units from 90,000 units, while the output at the second plant will be increased to 2,10,000 units from 1,20,000 units. The firm invested Rs 3,200 crore to set up its second manufacturing facility, with an initial installed

capacity of 70,000 units per annum, which is now being expanded to 1.2 lakh units annually. The company had also announced plans to set up an engine plant and expand its transmissions capacity at a combined investment of Rs 500 crore to cater to demand for its Etios and Liva models. The company will launch the diesel variants of its small car Liva and sedan Etios in India on Friday. The firm had introduced the petrol version of the Etios last year, while the Liva model was rolled out in June this year. At present, the company has capacities in place to manufacture 6,000 units of the Etios and Liva every month. It will ramp up the production volume to 6,800-7,000 units per month by October, including the diesel variants. Earlier, the company had said it plans to sell 60,000 units of both the Etios and Liva this year, of which over 20,000 units are likely to be the Liva model. The company has so far sold about 30,000 units of the two models since their respective launches.

Manufacturing Complex in India

GUJARAT (BB): US auto giant Ford has started construction on a $1 billion manufacturing and engineering complex in India as it bets on the country to help drive global growth, a company statement said Tuesday. The new manufacturing facilities in Sanand in the western state of Gujarat will create 5,000 jobs, and will be able initially to produce 240,000 vehicles a n d 270,000 engines a year, Ford said. The first vehicles and engines are due to come off the line in 2014. The complex highlights the automaker’s plan “to aggressively grow the Ford brand in India,” said Ford India president Michael Boneham. The new manufacturing facilities are targeted at helping Ford reach its goal of increasing worldwide sales by nearly 50 percent by the middle of the decade to eight million vehicles a year. “We are aggressively expanding in markets around the world that have the most growth potential,” said Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Asia Pacific and Africa.

Ford has made several moves to support its aggressive expansion plan in India, with the company’s total investment in the country to date now at $2 billion. Rising incomes and rapidly expanding young populations have turned Asia into a battleground for global car manufacturers such as Ford, GM and Toyota, which hope to grow revenues b y steering towards t h e AsiaPacific region and Africa. Ford began selling its cars in 1996 in India and in China one year later, but it only recently stepped up its game as it emerged from recession and restructuring in the United States. Last year, Ford announced it will bring eight new vehicles to India by mid-decade, the first one being the Fiesta, launched in July. The Detroit firm still has a long way to go to make the region a significant revenue generator. Ford is a comparative minnow in China and India with only three percent of the markets -- the two fastestgrowing globally.

To help promote his new film also starring Sonam Kapoor, Shahid will become an employee of the department for a day and like a typical weatherman, will be involved in weather forecasts. The IMD, which is in charge of providing the country’s weather forecast, will get Shahid to learn the tricks of the trade too. “Mausam is about seasons of love and not exactly about t h e w e a t h e r. However, the marketing team came up with this unique idea and everyone loved it. We are working on getting the required permissions for it now. I’m sure it will be interesting,” says director, and Shahid’s father, Pankaj Kapur. Since Mausam happens to b e K a p u r ’s directorial debut, Shahid is believed to be very hands-

on about coming up with innovative initiatives to promote it. So even as the makers plan a musical event to celebrate the success of the film, Kapur, who has sung a song in the film, will also hit the stage to perform live for a public audience. He will sing the track Saj Dhaj Ke..., which he has sung with singer Mika Singh in the film. Meanwhile, the film is also in the news for its

five promotional trailers, which are apparently pending clearance with the censors on humanitarian grounds, as one of them features a cow. Apparently, the Censor Board has now asked the film’s producers to obtain clearance from the Animal Welfare Board, since a sequence shows a cow passing by in a frame. The film is a star-crossed tale of a Punjabi Indian Air Force pilot and a Kashmiri girl.

Wanted: Asecond FitODI Indian Cricket Team against England on

SOUTHAMPTON (ZN): When team India takes the field at The Rose Bowl, Southampton for the

Tuesday, there would hardly be any player sitting in the dressing room.

Zaheer Khan had a hamstring pulled on the first day of the England tour followed by an ankle injury. Harbajan has had a stomach injury, Yuvraj and Rohit Sharma fractured their fingers, and Gautam Gambhir has concussion with vision problems, Sachin is also out with an inflamed toe, that leaves most of the valuable players out

Half of the original squad is out of the series and have flown back and some of them have been asked to join the team from India. The ODI series is a chance at redemption for the men in blues but putting up a fit XI seems to be bigger task than the one at redemption. Interestingly, Indian team would have only six batsmen to choose from the squad to play in the XI if the likes of Tiwary, Jadeja and Badrinath fail to reach in time. Though, it has been confirmed that Manoj Tiwary has just landed in time for the match. At least, India team can afford to choose out of seven now. It has been a wretched series for India so far, not only because of the performance but the untimely injuries and the rain interruption in the first ODI where India could have put up a good show. The injury list started swelling on a daily basis right from the start of the series and out of the original squad seven players have been ruled out so far. Vi r e n d e r Sehwag is out with hearing problem and failing to recover from the shoulder injury. Zaheer Khan, who opted out of West Indies tour, in a cruel twist of fate, had hamstring pull in the very first Day of the England tour. Later on, he picked up an ankle injury which lead to an immediate surgery. This

Tendulkar, Dravid Move up in ICC Test Rankings

DUBAI (Samachar): Senior batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid gained a place each in the latest ICC player rankings for Test batsmen, which is being headed by South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis. While Tendulkar improved from fifth to fourth, Dravid rose a rung to ninth from tenth position.

fifth after scoring only 10 and 17 in the recently completed Test against Australia. Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott are other batsmen in the top-10. England now boast of four bowlers and equal number of batsmen in the top 10. Australia’s Shane Watson and Ryan Harris, Rangana Herath of Sri

Tendulkar has moved to fourth while Dravid is at number nine.

Among Indian bowlers, pace spearhead Zaheer Khan gained a place to be at sixth despite being ruled out of the recently concluded four-match Test series between India and England after sustaining hamstring injury on the very first day of the opening match at the Lord’s. As England claimed the title of number-one Test side in the world with a 4-0 series victory, four of their batsmen made it to the top10, with Ian Bell being the most notable. Bell and Alastair Cook have jointly claimed the second position after Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara slipped three places to

Lanka and Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez and Misbah-ul-Haq have achieved career-best rankings in the latest list, which was released after the completion of the Galle Test between Sri Lanka and Australia and the one-off Test between Pakistan and Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. The player rankings will now be updated after the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia, which starts on Thursday in Pallekele, while the Test Championship table will be updated after the conclusion of the third and final Test between the two sides which starts in Colombo on 16 September.

has put him out of cricket for nearly 8 months. His availability for the all important Australia series is also in doubt. Ishant Sharma also has an ankle niggle and has wisely decided to sit out. Harbhajan had a stomach injury, Yuvraj and Rohit Sharma fractured their fingers and Gautam Gambhir

is suffering concussion and vision problems. The Master Blaster also has been ruled out with inflammation on the toe. It seems Sourav Ganguly might as well be ready to pad up to complete the playing XI.
