Corporation BRIEF:

Port Blair Municipal Corporation proposed to construct 555 affordable housing units & 2 commercial at Port Blair. The project envisages construction of affordable houses for EWS population as well as commercial (retail+office) in order to generate revenue to meet the construction cost incurred and also cross subsidy to be extended to 555 beneficiaries. Bengaluru Cantonment is one of the three important railway stations serving the city of Bengaluru and it is located in the locality of Vasanth Nagar and nearby to Shivajinagar. BANGALORE CANTONMENT STATION HAPPENS TO BE THE CITY'S OLDEST RAILWAY STATION. THE STATION WAS SET ESSENTIALLY TO CONNECT MADRAS WITH KOLAR. THE STATION WAS ONE OF THE ACKNOWLEDGED TOURIST ATTRACTION BACK THEN. TIMELINE 1853 The construction of the Civil and Military station (as known then) started

1862 The train services commenced to begin its first run to transport British troops to and from Madras Presidency with just one platform in effect

LATE 1800'S Station was advanced with another track and platform

1970'S The no of platforms increased from 2 to 4 passenger platforms

2011 Bengaluru cantonment station got a face lift with the remodelled entrance and ticketing counter behind the platform 2 which was opened to public on January 2011 by K Muniyappa, Union minister of state for railways

• Excellent connectivity to other parts of Bangalore City as there are two sub urban station that connects with the Bangalore Cantonment Railway station. • Enhanced visibility and excellent frontage development could expect to command a premium.

WEAKNESS • Undulated terrain at site could lead to high construction cost. • Most of the surrounding lands are owned by government agencies such as railways, defence etc. Thus limiting real estate activities.

7C’S OF DESIGN 1. CITY CENTRE The sympathetic redevelopment of Bangalore Cantonment station in Bangalore turns a historic rail terminus into a dynamic transport hub and a destination in its own right.

2. CONVERGENCE The station facilitates social and community activities for the people of the city accessing and using the Indian railways,the sub urban station, the retail and commercial zones making provision of spaces to engage the travellers as well as commuters all under one roof.

3. CONSERVATION The design proposal sensitively preserves the existing station building in its original form which is a heritage building.

4. CONGESTION The existing design of the station poses a problem of chaotic vehicular and pedestrian circulation due to absence of amenities resulting in ineffective movement about the site


Proposal 5. COMMUNICATION With an increase in the magnitude of passenger traffic, comes the need for a dynamic system that guides passengers to the respective counters and platforms that ensures maximum efficiency in minimum time.
