Third Space & Collective Memories A social space where citizens can gather in an open but sheltered place. Its importance also calls for an icon that signifies the spirit of the city. We approached this by gathering the collective spatial memories and identities that citizens will relate.

These scenes were then simplified into their formal elements. In doing so we asked questions such as: what is its use? What affects does it produce? How do people interact with/around it?

The underlying patterns are used as spatial experiences to create identifiable places from the collective memory.

The elements are then used as architectural objects that are composed by examining the principles needed such as entry, circulation, gathering to create various third spaces for the public. sheltering roof

Subduing Land Subsidence Analyzing multiple geopgraphical maps, it is evident that Jakarta is sinking rapidly due to the ‘over-pumping’ of groundwater aquifers. Reviving the crowded rivers is paramount, and opens up a question between human and nature. The project imagines a gradual revival of Jakarta’s rivers through migration and accompanied by movable units of architecture, allowing a new landscape and waterscapes that will aid groundwater absorption

Bangkok Royal Seedbank In a dystopic future where the world went through climate catastrophes, Bangkok rose as a power center with its treasury of seeds. This project imagines the Royal Seedbank as imagined in the novel ‘The Windup Girl’, where rare seeds become coveted treasures that is hidden away in underground vaults that is guarded by sacred monks as the project navigates between the pragmatic and the sacred.

When the world has gone through climate catastrophe, old notions of wealth will change. Precious stones, metals and resources are only valuable for its scarcity and perceived need. In a future where agricultural blight has taken over, seeds have become precious resources, coveted for its gene and caloric potentials. Scientific advances have brought biological warfare in forms of plagues that attack humans and blights that ruin crops. The Thai Royal Seedbank navigates between the new sacred meaning imbedded from its newfound substance, and its pragmatics of preservation and fortification from outside powers.

The Royal Seedbank ultimately forces a dialogue between the pragmatics of infrastructures and the symbolic meanings and metaphors of sacred temples. The project brings up the question of metaphorical symbols and identity in the built environment. Perhaps, the pragmatic can only ever offer ‘a model of a truer world’ when introduced by symbolic and metaphorical meanings. This of course raises the question of which symbols and metaphorical values are apt. After all, even aesthetic choices are inherently political and imposes itself.

Structure Analysis Analysis of an existing built project to understand the design of its structural system and members by using SAP2000 and Matlab applications. Our group analyzed the Adidas World of Sports Arena in Herzogenaurach, Germany for its floating gridded box that is held up by diagonal stilts.

well as responsiveness to future developments. The result is a striking landmark formed by an abstract volume housing three workspace floors that hovers above a modeled landscape. This sculpted hill accommodates the building’s entrance area, part of which is publicly accessible, leading to a vast bright atrium suitable for a variety of events.

The adidas ARENA forms a distinctive landmark on the adidas World of Sports campus in Herzogenaurach. The new office and reception building marks the campus’s main entrance, welcoming visitors to the adidas group’s World of Sports headquarters and lending it a strong visual identity. The ARENA’s architecture is both functional and expressive, its sculptural shape emphasizing the passion for sports that adidas represents. A floor area of 52,000 square meters provides nearly 2,000 employees with modern and sustainable workspace organized on flexible, organic principles.

Second Floor Plan

The heart of the ARENA is the dramatic floating staircase in the atrium. Rising through the bright and spacious light well, it takes employees up to the three-story workspace section and offers exciting views into the atrium, across the open-air level out over the campus, and up to the office floors. A central “main street” links these three levels both vertically and horizontally to create a space akin to a lively marketplace suspended in mid-air. On each R

The architectural idea behind the ARENAPlan builStructural ding is predicated on a finely balanced interplay between transparency, landscape, and a modern concept of work based on communication and interaction across professional fields as 1

The Adidas Sports Arena employs a structural system where a floating box of fixed members are held up mostly by diagonal columns underneath. The structural considerations include: • Pin joints for the diagonal columns isolate the moments that happen internally to the members in the floating box massing. • Structural members of the floating box (beams and columns) have to account for the big moment and shear that happens internally. In addition, to minimize the structural dead load, the beams are designed to maximize its moment diagram (biggest on the fixed connections.) • Since the diagonal columns take much of the axial load, the choice of using composite columns make sense as the concrete would provide for much needed axial support.
