Contents Special Christmas Edition 2013 6 How to choose ART as a gift 8 Malta, the FILM star 10 indulge HER – what to buy the woman you cherish

A note from the Editor Every year, I look forward to Christmas from the first signs of the end of Summer, and this year was no exception. I promised myself I’d find the time to write proper messages in my Christmas cards, this year designed by the lovely Isabel Warrington; to hand make more of my gifts, having witnessed the work of the inspiring Maria Muscat, and also to make sure my Santa has a good idea of what I’d like under the tree, so I can focus on the sales and not returns come Boxing Day….. Over my years in Malta, I’ve learned to book my theatre tickets early, to have an extra gas cylinder (in case of a repeat of a part-cooked Christmas lunch one year), and a few extra gifts set aside for any impromptu invites.

BUYING ART AS A GIFT

Mediterranean Dream IV

L

ove and appreciation are the only requirements for buying art, together with the familiarisation of the techniques used which comes through visiting exhibitions and art spaces. There is no right or wrong way to buy art but everyone would like to know that they are spending their money wisely, especially when it comes to buying art as a gift. This is by far not an easy task and only recommended when buying for people you know well enough to know what spaces they need filled, names of artists they have already purchased from, or what they like. Many people think that buying a work of an artist that is already established, or a local artist, would be appreciated and valued more. Using ‘the name’ as a point for sale only comes about through a lack of appreciation of the art itself. No one can guarantee an increase in value and from my experience, those artists with more ability to grow in terms of investment are those just starting out in their career and seeking opportunities. Art galleries, most especially commercial ones, are the right place to find out this information as galleries monitor sales’ movements within their establishment, being less likely to stock on nonmoving artworks. As a gallerist myself, my best selling artists are not Maltese and definitely not high end names. There is always the element of competition in appeal, price and value for money between well-known artists and emerging artists when exhibited together. When buying art as a gift, there is usually a budget on what the buyer is willing to spend. This tends to narrow down the selection so pooling in as a group, when possible, is a better option for a better selection. One can compare prices of artists and weigh them against their biographies, like where they studied, the quality and quantity of shows they have participated in, or galleries they are represented by, and also by the standard of the work itself. Assessing an artist’s biography becomes more important when the art that you want to buy is expensive or significant. The more the artwork costs, the more respected, established and documented the artist should be. People usually buy art for those they are close to or enough to know what their interior spaces look like and what style they like. For the final piece of advice, do not leave it to the last minute. The best artworks are usually sold right away and oftentimes, the artworks that most people would have had an eye on would have been sold by the time they come for it. Buying art needs its time.

Jazz by Olaug Vethal

When trying to describe styles, there are numerous terminologies to describe them but it is really quite simple. Many people come and ask for modern art but the term in itself is too vague. Modern Art, in the art history timeline, started in the late 19th Century with Impressionism, the term for art usually painted on the spot in natural sunlight (‘en plein air’), using thick brushstrokes, in a small matter of time in order to depict the impression of a particular moment. Post Impressionism followed and while still following with Impressionistic characteristics, the emphasis was on geometric forms. Symbolism also stood as part of the modern art era but along the turn from the nineteenth century onto the twentieth century, Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism and Futurism gained momentum. Fauvism was characterised by strong colours like those used by Matisse, Cubism was about having objects analysed, put apart and reassembled in an abstracted form like we find in Picasso’s works, Expressionism is all about expressing moods and experience, opposed to the physical reality, whilst Futurism is associated with future concepts like speed and technology. Modern Art did not end there and movements that

ended the Modern Art era included Abstract Expressionism with artists like Jackson Pollock, Pop (referring to the popular culture) Art with artists like Andy Warhol and Op (optical) Art with artists like Bridget Riley. To understand all this to determine the style that one likes, it would be good to take note of the themes depicted in artworks collected. It could either be wholly abstract in nature like we saw with abstract expressionist artists, futuristic and optical artists, landscape as if it were in one’s memory like impressionistic art, or figurative. However, we find landscapes and figures that take on more of an abstract nature. These we would call abstract landscapes or figurative abstracts. The terms - Fauvism, Cubism and Expressionism, have all had figures used in abstract form, either through the colours used or through geometric forms or expressive brushstrokes. If someone likes futuristic art, you would definitely know as they depict strange and dream like scenes like those of Salvador Dali and Giorgio de Chirico among others. Contemporary Art and Modern Art are often associated but they do not carry the same meaning in the world of art. It is hard to explain but it is generally used for artworks that are more avant-garde or cutting edge in nature. Genres are usually post-modernist and they could also include Pop Art, Installation Art and Performance Arts. I would say that only a few people with a good understanding of contemporary art are inclined to appreciate Contemporary Art.

Colour and expressionism are the most common traits found in the artworks found at the gallery and the themes vary from landscapes to abstracts, figurative and conceptual. Artists found at the gallery include Adrian Abela, Anna Nightingale, Anthony Weitz, Antoine Stevens, Carmel Bonello, Caroline Navarro, Christopher Saliba, Clemens Hasengschwandtner, Goran Cejkov, Henry Alamango, Jimmy Grima, Josephine Scerri, Kenneth Zammit Tabona, Marie Louise Kold, Micko, Pauleen Micallef, Pietro Piccoli, Rupert Cefai, Samuel Sultana, Selina Scerri, and Unni Askeland. Information about each artist may be found on the gallery website: www.christinexart.com.

‘Christine is usually found at her art gallery together with her girls, selling other artists’ artworks, or curating art exhibitions. She would be found indulging in sweets until she’d realise that she had enough’.

Jean Pierre Borg discusses Malta in the movies

TAKE 1

T

he glamour and charm of “Cinema” is many times associated with lavish parties, extravagant award shows and numerous magazines reviewing the designer wear and jewellery on display at such events. With Malta hosting the 25th edition of the European Film Awards last December, a fortunate crowd stood witness to such a display, which included a steady flow of internationally known European stars, including Helen Mirren, Mads Mikkelsen, Bernardo Bertolucci and, why not, our own Maltese actress Marama Corlett, all walking on the red carpet at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. Admittedly, they all deserved this honour since the road to fame or stardom is not an easy one and such events are simply the culmination of much hard work. Indeed, the final product gracing the cinema theatre screens is always the result of a collaborative effort of hundreds of film professionals

8 –indulge / Christmas 2013

who passionately work in an industry that is often inclement to the unaccustomed. Malta has for the past 88 years played host to countless productions. Film crews are a common sight around the Maltese Islands, where the wide variety of natural locations, historical settings or even the urban spaces often become a hive of film-related activity. As over the years the popularity of Malta as a film destination soared, the regular flow of productions meant that a skilled workforce became increasingly involved in the workings of this industry, and as a result, gained more experience in the specialised skillset required of a regular film crew. Maltese crew members thus became renowned for their extensive and talented craftsmanship, to which the epic sets and props built on the island are a testimony. The earliest film known to have shot scenes in Malta was ‘Sons of the Sea’ a British silent production helmed by

producer/director H. Bruce Woolfe. Having been granted a rare permission by the British Admiralty to make a film aboard their ships, Woolfe was in Malta in 1925, filming scenes for the film which is not only considered to be the first film shot in Malta, but is also the first ever fiction film to boast Admiralty support within the British Empire. Unfortunately, only four of the original six reels survive today. However, Maltese film enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the last two reels were completely shot on land and sea in the Għajn Tuffieħa and Ġnejna area. Malta, in this segment, is used to stand in for an unnamed island in the Eastern Mediterranean. Il-Qarraba is clearly visible a number of times and most of the action takes place in the area known as il-Minżel tal-Majjiesa. Again with full Admiralty support, Woolfe’s company returned to Malta in 1927 to produce the WWI naval epic ‘The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands’ (1927). While the Admiralty’s

FILM

support in making these naval related films was the initial reason why Woolfe had set base in Malta, ‘Bolibar’ (1928), his third film partly shot in Malta, resulted from his discovering the unique film locations offered by Malta at the time. Set in Spain in 1812 during Napoleon’s Peninsular Campaign, most of the exterior shots in ‘Bolibar’ were filmed in Mdina and Ħaż-Żebbuġ, marvellously re-creating the Spanish fortified town in the plot. It is documented that 900 costumes had to be specially made and brought to Malta, where much of the exterior filming was done with the help of the Devonshire Regiment, the Royal Artillery and 1000 Maltese extras. A yet unknown Elissa Landi starred as the film’s love interest and many later claimed that it was her role in ‘Bolibar’ which propelled her to Hollywood stardom. Woolfe’s company returned to Malta one final time in 1930 to produce ‘Tell England’ (1931). Set during the tragic Dardanelles campaign, Malta was used to stand for Gallipoli, with the beaches at Mġiebaħ, Għajn Tuffieħa and Marsaxlokk used to re-create the tragic landings of the Anzac forces in 1915. Following ‘Tell England’, the filming of feature films in Malta seems to have understandably ceased for some 20 years as the world was at war. Nonetheless, research is still ongoing so the prospect of eventually discovering other films shot in this 20year lull is plausible. Future articles in this series will seek to document the long history of film-making on our shores, from its humble beginnings in the mid-

1920s to our current resilient film servicing industry. With our own indigenous film industry still in its infancy, hopes couldn’t be higher. As this article goes to print, Maltese film ‘Simshar’, passionately directed by Rebecca Cremona, is being submitted to a number of prestigious film festivals and one cannot but wish the admirable team behind ‘Simshar’ much success and who knows, maybe also a strut on a famous red carpet as well. Jean Pierre Borg has for the past years been researching on the films that have been fully or partly shot in Malta. For more information, curiosities and trivia about the Maltese film industry, contact the author on 79710271, email jeanpierreborg@live.com or visit the ‘Filmed in Malta’ Facebook page.

STYLE

Carina Camilleri take us to the

Battle of trends for 2013/14

Texture or plaid Wearing texture needs to come with a warning; it can make anyone look a size bigger, so wear with care. Mohair sweaters, as at MaxMara or oversized shearling jackets or best of all, furry bags, so cuddly and so cool! Plaid, tartan, checks can bring in the rebel out in all of us and give an updated grunge and punk look. Wear with the boot of the season, the studded & buckled biker boot by Saint Laurent or pointed killer heel ankle boots for women who can’t do flats!

Animal vs opulence For me there IS only one winner and that is opulence but many will be very happy to see the return of the leopard amongst other animal print. Keep it elegant and add a touch of camel to keep it classy. For those who are not fond of animal print (like me), a leopard printed high-heeled pump or clutch should do the trick to introduce you to the trend. The opulent woman will want to keep it contemporary. Gucci have done fabulous gowns ordained in sequins and ostrich feathers raising the bar for full on glamour! Style, class and luxe - fabulous!

Simplicity

Red or white? Both I say!

No contenders here. This is a winner hands on, always. Never under estimate the power of modern simplicity. Invest in great quality pieces like a classic t-shirt, a white shirt, a shift dress, a pencil skirt and a wicked bag - these will be staples in your wardrobe and will get you through the season.

Red is for the woman who wants to stand out and wants to be seductive. Take your pick from scarlet to pillar-box to crimson. For full impact add a touch of lipstick in the same colour. This season’s white story is about luxury and simplicity. Be it a Valentino lace dress or fabulous ankle boots, there is a certain knack to pull this off well.

Lady vs Masculine These trends have appeared yet again to the delight of many women. Some say it is undeniably the season of the lady with a dash of 50’s and 30’s secret glamour. Figure hugging tailored jackets, modest midi skirts revealing a thigh-high split in motion and perfectly undone hair hinted at a day of clandestine adventures. Lanvin has killed this trend. Whether for work or for play, mannish influences are also a powerful statement this season BUT with a touch of feminine. Add subtle sensual separates to mannish suits or my all time favorite a white shirt! Seal the deal with lace up brogues.

JEAN MARC BIANCHI SAYS

LOUNGE ABOUT THIS CHRISTMAS WITH FURNISHINGS FROM LOFT.COM.MT

I

t’s the time of year when you trade your T-shirts for wool sweaters, your beach towel for umbrellas, and your air conditioning for a roaring fire. The first signs of dark grey clouds and the first rainfall are exciting. But while your kids still have visions of swimming in their heads, you’re envisioning heating bills (ouch)… and ways of keeping, and making the house warm and cosy.

Create Your Own Work of Art A composed display feels friendly and charming against a casual (and marked-up) chalkboard wall. The recipe? Something high and curvy, something low and wide, and a natural element that offers a burst of colour. An earthenware vase or large bowl, with an array of dried leaves, mixed with pine cones, and twigs could provide for that ‘work of art’.

As homeowners we’re often faced with the harsher realities of the changing seasons. A heavy rainfall doesn’t just mean a day off school or work; it can also mean a leaking window, or a blocked water drain.

Play With Colour

Most winter home prepping can be accomplished in a single, dedicated weekend. And you don’t have to spend a lot of money either; you just need to be smart about it. Be creative… and imaginative.

Colour connects a riot of items: deep magenta travels from the rug to the basket to the pile of cushions. Even consider replacing the curtains. Select nice fleece rugs, again in deep colours, to curl up under, whilst watching TV.

22 –indulge / Christmas 2013

Mix and Match Materials Soft materials—rich velvet upholstery and a luxe alpaca throw—clustered with hard, shiny surfaces create intriguing tactile interplay (sort of makes you want to pet the furniture). Don’t be afraid to tuck a big, generous chair into a snug nook for an intimate reading spot, together with a dedicated reading light.

INTERIORS

Wood paneling or a wood flooring, warmed over by a rustic floor rug would invite guests to actually sit on the floor!

Invite Nature Inside

Embrace Spontaneity

A terrarium, like a bowl of fish, adds life to a room. It also reflects light, so it’s nice for brightening dark walls. Delicate greenery feels calming and homey—and sophisticated when contrasted in a sleek, modern vase.

Quirky vignettes are perfect for drawing visitors away from the main seating area toward intimate corners. Unexpected juxtapositions, like a low-riding chandelier above a tufted ottoman, spark curiosity and add delight. A glowing flame (not necessarily a fixed fire place), but a decorative appliance that creates it.

MARIA MUSCAT shows us how to have a

Crafty Christmas This is a step by step tutorial of how to make the easiest, sweetest, eco-friendliest and possibly the cheapest Christmas decorations ever. By using paper that would normally have ended up lining your bin or cat-litter tray, some of those random buttons you’ve come across in the past and (may I say, wisely) hung on to and pieces of ribbon from around the house (yes, even ribbon from last birthday’s present packaging or last Christmas’ panettone); here’s a simple paper-craft technique that’ll open up a world of options for the crafter inside you. With some thought and bit more patience, these paper flowers can easily replace most shop bought decorations. They make for perfectly festive window décor, sit prettily on your Christmas tree, add a touch of magic to your table settings, hang beautifully as a centrepiece cluster from a chandelier and liven up your Christmas gift packaging as fancy name tags.

You’ll need *A4 paper – I’m using a plain sheet to demonstrate however I strongly suggest you re-use some unwanted magazine covers to cut down on waste! *a ruler *a pen *glue *a pair of buttons *a piece or ribbon around 20cm long – the idea is to buy less and re-use more so for practice or a one-off sample do look around the house for some left over string/ribbon *scissors *spray in festive colours (optional) *pegs and some disposable gloves if you want to protect your manicure

24 –indulge / Christmas 2013

CRAFTS STEP BY STEP

Step 1 Using ruler and pen divide your chosen A4 sheet width-wise into equal strips. In this case I used the width of the ruler as the width of each strip to make my job easier still.

Step 6 Add just a touch of glue to the areas where the loops meet but not to the centre just yet to…

Step 2 Cut along each line to get equal and separate strips.

Step 7 …Achieve this result.

Step 3 Add a bit of glue at the very edge of each strip and fold over to create petal-like loops.

Step 8 Once the flower is formed and the glue has dried sufficiently, gently space out the paper loops away from the centre using your fingers and add a touch of glue down the centre of the flower to bind everything together.

Step 11 Et voilà, you may now hold up your festive flower with pride.

Variations on the same theme Variation 2 Use a stiff magazine cover – and the effect is pretty much the same as if you were to use brand new paper, if not slightly more charming. Variation 3 Alter the width of each paper strip and get a bit creative with pinching each paper loop with your fingers.

Step 4 You’re meant to end up with an array of paper loops. Using pegs to hold the ends in place as the glue dries is a good idea especially if you’re working on more than one flower at a time.

Step 9 When it comes to spraying I tend to prefer a light touch and just a hint of colour rather than an all-over coat, however feel free to go as crazy and use as many colours as you please.

Variation 4 Whilst retaining the same width, shorten the length of each strip and add a ribbon with glue on to each strip lengthwise before the flower is shaped and glued into place. Variation 5 Once your flower is formed, spray it almost entirely in gold with red and green sequins glued on to each petal as embellishment.

Step 5 Centre each loop in such a way so as to form a flower. Every paper loop must touch at the centre and sides therefore I do not suggest you use any glue at this point so that you’re better able to form, press and wrestle each individual one into the desired size and shape.

Step 10 The spray paint dries instantly so you can go on to strategically glue your chosen buttons on opposite sides of the flower to cover up any imperfections at the centre as well as loop the ribbon through one of the flower ‘petals’, gluing it into place.

Tips • keep your glue nozzle clean at all times to avoid gluey mishaps • remember that the décor options are endless once you’ve mastered the basic steps.

Monique Chambers’ ideal

seasonal meal

If you are having a quiet Christmas and want a taste of the less traditional without lots of fuss, try these recipes, which are pretty good for a special mid–week supper too.

A gourmet chestnut soup a knob of butter 1 onions, chopped 1 small garlic clove, finely sliced 1 celery sticks, chopped 1 medium potato, diced 200g cooked chestnuts 500 ml vegetable stock

The vegetarian option This offering is by the gorgeous Lorraine Pascal, but don’t just save it for the non meat eaters – it is also great as a supper dish! Defrosted shortcrust pastry (2 sheets) 4 leeks, finely sliced 4 rosemary sprigs, picked 6 thyme sprigs, roughly chopped

100 ml single cream In a saucepan, melt the butter and fry the onion, garlic and celery till soft but not coloured. Add the potato, chestnuts, stock and bay, with salt and pepper to taste.

600g mixed nuts (e.g. pecans, cashews and hazelnuts)

Brush any exposed pastry with the beaten egg.

150g Gruyère, grated 3 free-range eggs 150g dried cranberries

Once the potato is soft, remove the bay leaf and blitz with a hand blender till smooth.

125g frozen cranberries

Serve with crusty bread.

When not cooking, creating or cloudspotting, Monique Chambers enjoys reading and renovating homes.

26 –indulge / Christmas 2013

Stir in the eggs until well combined.

5 sage leaves, roughly chopped

Boil, then simmer for 30 minutes.

Stir in the cream and check the seasoning.

Blend the nuts in a food processor to a coarse powder and add to the leek mixture with the cheese. Mix until well combined and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Spoon half of the filling into the tin, pressing it down tightly with a wooden spoon. Tip over the dried cranberries, press down a little and finish with the rest of the pie filling, pressing down well.

3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 250g chestnut mushrooms, finely chopped

1 bay leaf

Toast the nuts in the oven for 8-10 minutes (keep an eye on them as they burn really easily). Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.

Preheat the oven to 200°C and grease a 18cm springform cake tin. Line the tin with the pastry allowing overhang. Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the leeks, rosemary and thyme for 4-5 minutes, or until softened. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Add the mushrooms and sage and cook for 2-3 minutes, then remove from the heat, transfer to a large bowl and set aside to cool. (Reserve two tablespoon of this mixture for the gravy).

Roll the reserved pastry into a circle, and using the cake tin as a guide, cut out a circle with a 1cm/½in border. Place the pastry over the top of the tin and squeeze or crimp the lid onto the pie to seal it, trimming any excess. Cut a slit in the middle of the pie to let any steam escape and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes. Remove the pie from the oven and carefully remove the tin. Slide the pie onto a baking tray and glaze the top and sides of the pie with the beaten egg, then return to the oven for a further 15 minutes, or until golden-brown. Remove the pie from the oven, glaze the top again and top with the frozen cranberries. Return to the oven for a further 5-10 minutes.

FOOD

Champagne and berry jelly

Cheese pie This ridiculously easy but delicious cheese pie is great for all those unidentifiable cheeses in the fridge. Shared with me by my favourite friend from Sicily.

This isn’t difficult to make but does have to be made first to give it time to set. It really looks like you have made an effort, and is light, so you don’t have that stuffed feeling which is usual after Christmas lunch. 100 ml hot water

Preheat the oven to 180°C.

20g caster sugar

Use a ready made puff pastry sheet in a circle shape.

175 ml Champagne / Prosecco

Spread fig jam or pickle (mango chutney works well) over the pastry.

2 leaves of gelatine

Chop up cheeses and pile up to about 2 inches high (or use a whole Camembert or similar round cheese) then cover the cheese with the pastry.

50g of berries

Cover in eggwash and bake for 25 minutes. Serve with a Port and fresh Maltese bread. Of course, you could serve with a salad…

Put the water and sugar into a small saucepan over a low to medium heat. Stir to dissolve the crystals, then raise the heat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, simmer for five minutes, then remove the pan. Pour the sparkling wine into a large heatproof bowl and add the gelatine. Set aside for about five minutes, or until the leaves are soft and squidgy. Take out the leaves, squeeze off as much liquid as possible, and add them to the sugar syrup. Whisk furiously until the gelatine has completely dissolved, then pour the syrup back into the bowl with the sparkling wine and whisk to combine.

My friend’s fish dish This recipe was shared with my when I started my first job, and I make it so regularly, I wish the lady knew that she was right, it does always impress! Preheat the oven to 200°C. Unroll a sheet of puff pastry, leaving a couple of inches at each end, add a packet of flavoured microwave rice down the centre (Tilda and Uncle Ben’s both have a good selection), add salmon fillets over this mixture, and add halved boiled eggs and /or spinach leaves on the top of this. Eggwash the edges and pull together and crimp, using the remaining egg to coat the outer casing. Place in the oven for 25 minutes.

Allow to cool thoroughly, then refrigerate the jelly for about one hour. As soon as it starts to thicken, stir in the raspberries or other fruit. Divide the jelly between two glasses and cover them with cling film. Refrigerate for four to six hours, or until they have completely set and serve.

Preheat the oven to 180°C Place the milk, cream and vanilla pod into a saucepan and bring slowly to the boil. Place the eggs, egg yolks and sugar into a bowl and combine.

Bread and butter pudding with white chocolate and whisky Whip up a delectable pudding in minutes, This is quite rich, so you don’t seem to be able to eat too much, in one sitting anyway! 350 ml milk

Stuffed quail with marmalade and whisky When M&S put their stock of Orange and Whisky marmalade on the shelves, I crave this dish. I was introduced to it by Bompas & Parr and have adapted it to my own taste. Use 4 quail (if not boneless, tie the legs together) 8 tbsp orange and whisky marmalade Dram of whisky Bunch of fresh thyme Salt and pepper 4 rashers streaky bacon, cut in half 200 ml chicken stock.

350 ml double cream 1 vanilla pod, split 2 eggs 4 egg yolks 150g caster sugar 150g roughly chopped white chocolate 10 slices of white bread, roughly chopped 110g butter 60 ml whisky 25g sultanas or orange zest 2 tbsp icing sugar (to dust)

When the cream mixture has come to the boil, remove from the heat and remove the vanilla pod. Whisk the egg mixture into the cream mixture. Add the white chocolate and whisk until melted and smooth. Grease an ovenproof dish and butter the bread. Place the bread into the dish, overlapping the slices. Drizzle the whisky over the bread, then scatter over the sultanas. Pour over the custard mixture. Transfer to the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden-brown and just set. Remove from the oven and dust with icing sugar. Place under a preheated grill or use a mini-blowtorch to caramelise the top. To serve, place portions of the pudding into serving bowls with a scoop of ice cream.

Mix the marmalade, half of the whisky, thyme, salt and pepper together and spoon over the quail. Cover loosely and then leave to marinate while you prepare your vegetables. A pureed celeriac and spinach are my recommendation. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Put a criss-cross of bacon on top of each bird. Season with pepper. Spoon the marinade over the birds again. Put the birds in a pot so they are snug, and cover. Cook in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. While the birds are cooking, reduce the chicken stock by half, or until it is slightly syrupy, and add the whisky. Use this as a sauce to moisten the birds, which do have a tendency to become dry.

S

pringbank distillery is an independent, family-run distillery which began legal distillation in 1828. The current chairman is Hedley Wright, the great, great, great grandson of Archibald Mitchell, the last in a long line of illicit distillers and the great, great grandson of John Mitchell, the family’s first legal distiller. Being a Boutique Distillery, it is one of the few Scottish distilleries where 100% of the production happens at the same site. It is very rare to find a distillery that still malts their own barley, but Springbank is one of only two distilleries which does so. The whole production process, from malting, milling, mashing, fermenting, distilling, maturing to bottling, happens in Campbeltown. Three malt whiskies are produced at the Springbank distillery, each with a unique character. Hazelburn is an unpeated and fruity whisky that is made to commemorate the Irish way of distilling; this carefully crafted Single Malt is distilled three times to give it its individual identity. Springbank is a lightly peated malt and distilled two and a half times, of course it is the oldest of the malts produced in the distillery and interestingly enough the reason for this unique method of distillation has been lost to time. As a Single Malt Springbank is characterised by its oily texture and a very light sensation of peat, once a drop of water is added to it the scent opens up and changes drastically. Long lasting, Springbank is known to coat the inside of your mouth and steadily reveals its length through a complex interplay of flavours.

Finally we have Longrow, first distilled in 1973 it originally started out as an experiment when the chairman set out to prove that it was possible to produce an Islay-style whisky on the mainland. The experiment was so successful that it was distilled a few years later and has remained in the Mitchells ever growing portfolio of Single Malts. Peat dried for over 48 hours this is a wonderfully Smokey whisky with delicate fruit. Being a Boutique distillery it only makes sense for it to be found in small and specialised Boutiques! Springbank Single Malts are imported and found exclusively in The Wine Boutique Franks, for more details please contact our outlet in the Plaza on 2388 2148 or send a email to aabela@franks.com.mt

The Festive Season at Valletta Waterfront From a variety of dining experiences to convenient parking, and a designated children’s area, the Christmas season at the Valletta Waterfront promises to be an ideal destination for all the family.

H

istorically of great cultural and economic importance, the Valletta Waterfront has been restored and revitalised by the Valletta Cruise Port consortium (formerly VISET) to suit the ever-changing requirements of a dynamic Grand Harbour. The Valletta Waterfront destination combines food and beverage, retail and entertainment outlets within a maritime hub, which for the past ten years has proved to be a highly popular destination with Maltese, sea passengers and tourists alike. For those in search of a relaxing evening of good food and entertainment, the Valletta Waterfront’s many restaurants and bars present a variety of offerings catering to different tastes, with dining right at the water’s edge. The establishments’ indoor dining areas are situated inside the tastefully refurbished, historical stores, originally constructed by Grand Master Pinto in 1752. Today, ushering in a modern era, the iconic doors have been revived with an artistic impression of colour, representing the storage of goods from days past, with blue for fish, green for produce, yellow for wheat and red for wine.
