World Health Day is celebrated on 7th April every year to mark the founding anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO)


World Health Day Campaign, 2017 The theme of the World Health Day campaign 2017 is Depression – Let’s Talk.


Depression - Global Statistics Depression is a common mental disorder

Globally, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression

Out of which only 10% are effectively treated

The 2nd leading cause of death in the age group of 15-29 years is suicide

Depression is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disability

Women are more prone to depression than men

Chronic depression often leads to suicide


Depression: Indian Statistics  Depression is the most prevalent mental illness  WHO estimated that approximately 36% of Indians are depressed  In a study report, for every 100,000 Indians between the age group of 15-29 years, 36 commit suicide annually  By 2020, depression will increase to 5.7% of the total burden of diseases to become 2nd leading cause of disability


What is depression?  Depression is a common yet a serious medical problem which negatively affects how you feel, your thinking and your actions.  Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.  It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and eventually decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.  It is a completely curable disorder.


Causes of Depression

Abuse physical, sexual or emotional abuse Conflicts personal conflict/conflicts within family members and friends Death Loss of a loved one may increase the risk of depression. Family History Increases the risk of depression Chronic illnesses Depression co-exists with a major illness or can be triggered by another medical condition. Substance Abuse 30% of people with substance abuse problems have major or clinical depression
