Introduction  The World Hypertension Day (WHD) 2017 was first inaugurated in May 2005  The objective of the WHD is to promote public awareness of hypertension and encouraging prevention and control of this silent killer  The theme for World Hypertension Day is “Know Your Numbers with a goal of increasing high blood pressure (BP) awareness in all populations around the world”


Global Hypertension Stats

Worldwide, the silent killer called Hypertension is estimated to cause 7.5 million deaths. Approximately 12.8% out of the total deaths are caused due to hypertension.

Uncontrolled hypertension is a major risk factor for fatal conditions like coronary heart disease and ischemic as well as hemorrhagic stroke. These complications of hypertension account for 9.4 million deaths worldwide annually.


What is blood pressure?

ďƒ˜ Blood Pressure is a common term. It can be defined as the pressure/force of the blood exerted on the walls of the blood vessels that carry it. ďƒ˜ It is a primary diagnostic measure used for conditions related to the heart.

Systolic Blood Pressure The pressure on the walls of the arteries when the heart muscles contract to pump blood.

Diastolic Blood Pressure The pressure exerted on the artery walls when the heart is at rest/relaxed in-between beats.
