introduction

Design is about seeing things in a new and different way and to suggest solutions that will make a positive difference to the user. This year’s exhibition celebrates a varied range of products and solutions to be used by consumers in many different situations. Developing a considered user-focused product while considering production is something that takes a wide knowledge of different development methods. The students who graduate this year have many different backgrounds, but one thing in common is their background in engineering. This gives them the ability to have both a wide and deep knowledge in this field, opening up opportunities for work throughout product development and design. The ability to express oneself visually in form, colour, surface and material is exercised throughout the education. Company environments and needs of development are also studied. Field trips and projects are carried out continuously during the education and in very close collaboration with industry. The education is mainly implemented in project form, as this gives a very real picture of the conditions surrounding product development, thus industrial design theory and practice are taught in a practical way. We believe that you are more than ready to meet new challenges, and those of us who have had the joy to work with you for these last two years would like to wish you great luck in your future carriers!

Food Packaging for Elderly People The aim of this project was to develop a new packaging concept for elderly people, in the form of ready meals tray, by focusing on the user needs. It was intended to be easy to open even for rheumatics, and thought for use in elderly care services and for the alimentary industry. The final result is a product family of paperboard and fiber packagings, easy to open and based on rounded and organic forms to make them nicer to eat from and provide an enjoyable meal experience to the end users. The use of natural materials makes these packagings environmentally friendly, creating great market opportunities facing the plastic products.

Nimbus 27 Concept This Master thesis project was made in collaboration with Nimbus boats, who manufacture leisure boats for sports and cruising. The aim was with a customer focused approach develop a new 27 feet motorboat. The product development process relied heavily on market research as unstructured interviews, semi-structured interviews and a big survey was employed early in the process. The outcome of this research strongly directed the design process. The aim was to develop a very social, comfortable and secure boat that can deliver the ultimate feeling of freedom and experience of nature. The result is a boat that admits big social areas, good comfort as well as having a vigorous, dynamic, clean and safe expression.

Extension – Improving the Operator Interface for Forest Harvesters A forest harvester operator is today facing a stressful work environment with a high demand on coordination skills and effectiveness to run the operation with positive economical outcome. The learning phase is very long compared to similar work. The vision for this project was to transform the machine, through intuitive and innovative interface design, into an extension of the operator’s body. In this way it provides higher productivity as well as user friendliness, shorter learning phase and a healthier work situation. The result is a complete seat with controls for a conceptual Gremo harvester realizable 10 years from now.

OTTOintheMOON OTTOintheMOON is the result of a design analysis for Austrian children’s furniture specialist perludi. OTTO is an ecologically children furniture, which adapts to its young owner’s changing needs form infancy up to 8 years old by means of different assemblies. It starts as a mobile crib then it converts into a junior bed and once the junior bed is outgrown it transforms into an ottoman style couch. This adaptability by mean of reassembly ensures that a single purchase can meet the users changing needs while developing a continued familiarity in the bedroom and a larger furniture lifespan. Currently OTTOintheMOON is being marketed and sold by perludi as well as being used as a tool for show-casing design guidelines and ideas for consideration in future perludi products.

Sundstrรถm SR 590 This thesis has been done in collaboration with Sundstrรถm Safety AB. The task was to redesign a Sundstrรถm SR 590 welding shield and give it an identity that is more true to the company. The current SR 590 is based on a ready for productiondesign and had therefore little connection with Sundstrรถm. The goal with this project was to implement the company values into a new SR 590. The result is a new welding shield with a design that better reflects these values and gives the SR 590 a clearer identity that connects it to Sundstrรถm Safety AB.

Diamond - A new generation of Vinyl Cutting Plotter In sign maker industry, quality means precision and it is what this market values most. The device used for cutting is called cutting plotter. A vinyl cutting plotter is a special output device that maneuvers a knife to cut shapes or letters on a plastic self-adhesive material. Diamond is a new generation of high precision vinyl cutting plotter for professional sign makers. It uses technologies of two existing plotter families in a clever combination that significantly increases quality of the product with minimal increase of the price. All functions embedded in the product are well thought out and valued by target group. The challenge with this project was to create a unique design which attracts attention and expresses quality both in form and function.

Foldable pedelec In collaboration with Fura d.o.o a new foldable pedelec - pedal electric cycle was created. The idea is that the commuters are able to fold their bicycle to a convenient size and store it under the desk in the office, in a trunk of a car, or even brought on a bus if used as a connecting transport. It incorporates the latest ergonomic, safety, display and drivetrain features in combination with a sleek singlefork design. This enables the pedelec to be folded more conveniently and save additional space. To appeal to a wider range of users they are given the opportunity to choose their own colour codes and personalize their own foldable pedelec.
