What You Need To Know About Soldering Wires

If you are a soldering technician, then you know the job like the back of your hand. Soldering is a complex process and needs deft hands to get the job done well. There are a number of components which a technician needs during the soldering process. One of the them is a soldering wire.

What is it?

A solder wire is a fusible alloy which acts as a joining element between two wire or metals. Available in spools, solder wires contain 60% tin and 40% lead. In some wires the composition differs in the range of 63% tin and 37% lead. The wires melt and fuse at a melting point in the range of 361 to 421 degrees. More the amount of lead in the wire, higher will be the melting point. You can also buy solder wires online that are lead free. Lead free solder wire have a mixture of tin, copper, silver and antimony. Pure tin has the highest melting point of 449 degrees.

Solder sizes

Solder wires are available in a form of thin wire wound on a spool as this makes them easy to handle and work with it. There are different sizes available and you have to make your choice depending upon the purpose you are using it for. For the record, the thinner the wire is, the better it is for your work. For normal soldering though, you can consider going for a slightly thicker joint as it is take a lot of wire if the wire is thin.

Benefits of lead free solder wire

Anything free from lead is good, be it water or wire. Though lead-free solders are expensive, soldering from lead-free wires are pretty solid and lead to fewer problems as compared to lead solder wires. They allow better lead spacing and are moisture sensitive too.
