Chipotle becomes first national fast food chain to go GMO free

Chipotle, the fast-casual Mexican-styled restaurant’s, Co-CEO Steve Ells ditches genetically modified foods over Non-GMO policy, as they think that it causes damage to the environment and health of the consumers. It’s really surprising, but true. Chipotle is the first restaurant company to announce going non-GMO in their food products. The GMO foods are used in almost every food and drink products viz. sugary fructose drinks and many other fast food items. The reason behind ditching GMO ingredients from Chipotle’s food menu is that Mexican food purveyor wants its customers to enjoy eating healthy food items. Scientists are still making a research study on the long-term implications of GMOs. They also mentioned that a majority of the scientific studies revealed that the use of GMO in food is safe, and it does not harm to the environment. But, the evidence revealed from other sources said that the use of GMOs in food items does not show any effects in the long-term. The study is still on to find out more on the implications of GMOs. Hence, the Mexican grill is prudent to take a cautious approach towards GMOs. Moreover, evidence suggests that GMO is engineered to withstand powerful chemical herbicide that damages the population of insecticides and creates herbicide resistant super-weeds. In July, 2016, a federal court mandates to mark a label on the GMO food products. You won’t believe, but many food industries have spent more than $10 million to fund anti-labeling. Chipotle being a foodie hotspot for most of the folks is ready to spend more towards serving quality food, and by far is making the best attempts to sustain on to its mission and goals.

Duke Energy pleads guilty to causing coal-ash pollution, agrees to pay $102 million in fines

Duke Energy, the nation’s largest utility corporation, pleaded guilty in May to nine breaches of the federal Clean Water Act for the illegal discharge of potentially toxic coal ash at five North Carolina power plants and for failing to monitor the equipment conditions in several power plants there. The company also agreed to pay $102 million in fines and environmental fees. The plea by Duke Energy Corporation is due to an investigation that started in February after a pipe ruptured under a coal ash dump, coating 70 miles of the Dan River in gray sludge. As part of a negotiated settlement with federal prosecutors, the energy corporation agreed to pay $68 million in criminal fines and $34 million on environmental projects and land conservation that will be advantageous to wetlands and rivers in North Carolina and Virginia. For several decades Duke let coal ash to enter waterways, including documented problems with the 48-inch pipe that eventually caused the massive spill into the Dan River in February 2014. The stormwater pipe below a coal ash pond at Duke’s retired power plant in Eden collapsed, releasing up to 27 million gallons of wastewater and as many as 39,000 tons of coal ash into the Dan River that supplies drinking water to two towns in neighboring Virginia, according to court records. Duke has also separately agreed to close and clean up coal ash sites at 14 coal plants in North Carolina, though their methods have been challenged.

LA Times publisher, Tribune Publishing to buy U-T San Diego for $85 million

Tribune Publishing in May agreed to purchase U-T San Diego newspaper for $85 million, giving the company a grip over the publishing business in California’s two largest cities. The cash and stock deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2015. Tribune Publishing Co already owns the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun and a host of other daily newspapers. The publisher is considering changing the 146-year-old newspaper’s name back to the traditional San Diego Union-Tribune, which was named so in 1992, when The San Diego Union and The Tribune consolidated, according to the report. Austin Beutner, the Times publisher and CEO said that they will create a regional operating organization, the California News Group to house its newspapers in the state, which are focused in Southern California. The organisation would run the two newspapers as separate brands with different newsrooms. Before the deal happened, Tribune Publishing had around eight metropolitan dailies, making it the fourth-largest newspaper chain in the U.S. However, with a tumultuous newspaper market, revenues in the company’s latest quarter declined to 4.9%. Beutner said the company will be able to cut down costs, integrate resources and share stories, images, video and other content, according to U-T San Diego. The U-T has an average print circulation of between 177,885 and 216,417 on weekdays and 268,038 on Sundays, tailing Digital First Media’s combined Los Angeles-area publications. The U-T’s circulation trails the Orange County Register on Sundays but is ahead on weekdays.

Wal-Mart builds supply chain networks to fulfill growing E-Commerce demands

Wal-Mart, one of the world’s fastest growing big-box retailers, has created a supply chain network mainly designed to meet e-commerce demands. The company expects to build four giant facilities by this quarter, as it aims to triple its online sales profits by 2018 (estimated: $35 billion). Wal-Mart has built four new distribution centers, mainly designed to meet the e-commerce demands, which require a proper establishment to handle a large number of small item orders that can help the retailer generate more sales. Traditional warehouses were built to store the pallets of products that were lifted by forklift machines to and from bay, where the trucks were loaded and unloaded with the packed goods. An e-commerce facility is more like a fine-tuned parcel handling service for picking and packing individual items for individual online shoppers. With the new distribution centers, each Wal-Mart store will be having more technical facilities, and enough space to store at least 500,000 items. Previously, traditional Wal-Mart facilities’ distribution centers were holding around 30,000 to 50,000 items. Last year, Wal-Mart also opened an e-commerce center in Texas. This center was filled with more fulfillments facilities, and used both the facilities human labor and automation system to move items. Wal-Mart’s big retailers are setting up centers for a variety of channels/ distribution centers which include e-commerce, as well as the existing location, making it as stand-ins built for warehousing or as pick-up points for retailers. WalMart’s initiative for building supply chain networks to fulfill e-commerce demands will surely be an advantage, and profitable for both, physical and online retailers.

Microsoft Corporation awarded patent for glasses that detect wearer’s emotions

Microsoft Corporation appears to be taking a fresh look at the idea of smart glasses and might soon set new standards for the tech wearable industry by launching its own pair of smart glasses that will be able to detect a wearer’s emotional state. In April, United States Patent and Trademark Office granted Microsoft a patent for a wearable emotion detection feedback system, a most likely feature that will be added in a future version of Microsoft HoloLens. The smart glasses will be able to detect a wearer’s emotional state and subsequently interpret people’s emotions, with the tech being able to tell if the individual is crying or smiling, essentially allowing it to track how people emotionally react to certain situations on the screen. According to Microsoft the user of the smart glasses could get an idea of another person or even a group’s thoughts at any given point of time, based on changes in their respective body temperatures and vocal activity. The device could very well be used by the government that has been increasingly using technologies that incorporate emotional analytics. It could be used by HR executives for recruitment purposes and also by security agencies for interrogation purposes. However, the smart glasses have come in for huge backlash from human rights groups on the back privacy concerns. Currently, Microsoft has not given a time frame for the development and subsequent launch of the device. Perhaps the tech giant wants to first identify the potential legal repercussions before developing the product.

A Hong Kong-Based Company is using People’s DNA with an INTENSION to shame them for littering in public

With an initiative to create awareness and to spread a social message for creating positive social awareness, a Hong Kong-based ad agency by collaborating with Virginia-based genetic technology company is using DNA samples of those who had left behind litter, and has posted images on wanted poster by using computer-generated programs. Last month, the company’s first campaign project was launched in Hong Kong, to create a social awareness amongst the Hong Kong civilians, as reported by the South China Morning post. Yet, the idea behind using a Biogenfutures/ Vimeo has existed from several years. A New York-based artist – Heather Dewey-Hagborg, used the same techniques to make human sculptures of strangers, using a sample DNA, which people had left behind on chewing gums, and discarded cigarettes. Dewey-Hagbord accumulated those samples from the streets to carry out her project. Dewey-Hagborg accumulated each single piece of litter that was rich in genetic data, characteristically curbed in form of DNA, sheathed in dried spit or inside the pieces of hair and skin. To isolate that DNA, she did a simple lab procedure that she carried out at a small community lab in Brooklyn. She used a computer program, which was designed by researchers, at Penn State. She searched through all the DNA, she already had collected, and picked out only those genes, which code for physical human qualities- hair and eye color, and more. Ogilvy Chief Creative Officer, Reed Collins stated to the South China Morning Post that the social campaign was intended to spread a message to make people aware, and create a positive change for Hong Kong civilians.

JPMorgan Expected to Cut 5000 jobs by next year

New York-based banking company, JPMorgan Chase announced to cut about 5000 jobs over the next years, as the bank wants to close down its branches, and to decline its operations. In February, JPMorgan expected to settle down with 300 fewer bank branches over the two years that cuts off about 5 per cent of the network. At an investor conference, JPMorgan CEO- Jamie Dimon said that the average chase brand would be losing an employee, mostly due to attrition. The recent move is intended by bank, and makes it as the nation’s largest bank overhauls its 5570 bank branches, depending more on technology and eliminating human teller or financial consultants. In Delaware, the company employs at least 75000 workers, including at its offices in Fairfax and Wilmington. That number includes the totaling of around 1,200 since year 2012, as the company has expanded its presence in the state. JPMorgan Chase and Co. does not have any full bank branches in the state that will reportedly be most affected by the layoffs. On the other hand, the layoffs taking place are more broad-based, affecting all the banks’ major business units, such as assets management, commercial banking, corporate and investment banking, and consumer and community banking.

IS Tesla Uberizing the Energy Industry? 28

Industry Leaders Magazine [june 2015]

A $3,000 Powerwall home battery heralds the end of fossil fuels Energy storage is the most vital piece of the decarbonisation puzzle, and perhaps this is why the Tesla announcement of transforming world’s energy infrastructure with home power storage battery has been greeted with frantic media coverage and excitement from the tech sector.

A New Option for Getting Off the Grid

PayPal billionaire turned electric car baron, Elon Musk believes that it is within the power of humanity to solve the perpetual problem of energy storage. In April 2015, Musk raised the curtain of what he called “the missing piece” in sustainable energy: a range of low-cost, wallmounted batteries that can be used in homes, businesses to store power from wind or solar or use electricity to charge it up overnight to use during peak hours. Two billion Powerwalls – A wall-mounted, rechargeable lithium ion battery with liquid thermal controls, storing ample power to address the world’s needs. The number may appear a little crazy, but Tesla is attempting to transform the fundamental energy infrastructure of the world. The first spot to feel the battery charge is without a doubt, going to be Nevada. In 2016, Musk’s Tesla Motors is set to begin operating a mammoth powerstorage-device “gigafactory” across nearly a thousand acres of Nevada land. It is expected to contribute $3.5 billion to the local economy, in return for a $1.25 billion tax break.

Cause a Sustainable Boom?

Musk’s batteries can fuse wind, solar and electric car power into single, existing grids that would lead to huge monetary savings for broke municipalities all around the world.

32

Industry Leaders Magazine [june 2015]

Clean energy backers in North America are hoping that Musk’s presentation in April changes minds. Tesla crushed the old, traditional notion that electric vehicle were best suited as golf carts. It’s about time, the company decimates the wacked-out idea, that it’s impossible for humanity to switch from coal and gas to wind and solar power due to dependability issues. If Tesla convinces consumers to use Powerpacks, the likelihood of a more noteworthy infrastructure improvement with greater adoption of cars increases. Power provision could get a lot more efficient if cities can be induced to draw power from those car batteries, and supplying it. That would provide electricity and lessen local reliance on expensive, fossil fuel-powered generators, especially during times of peak energy demand. Nissan, is already trying to do this with LEAF, a backronym for Leading, Environmentally friendly, Affordable, Family car, in Japan. In a home, the expense of storage can turn out to be a great deal. It tackles a large number of myriad issues – the power company would no longer have to turn on a power plant during peak times. People can utilize the present wire infrastructure. If those sound like grandiose objectives, they better be: Musk will need to inspire a considerable number individuals keeping in mind the end goal to legitimize the gobs of cash that Nevada is giving him – the gigafactory will be permitted to work basically expense free for a long time and won’t pay property charges for another 10 years subsequently. Beyond that, the state is giving Tesla $75m in transferable tax credits, which the organization can offer to different organizations in the region. This is the first time, Musk has requested the government for aid: SpaceX receives $685m in aid from NASA. If Musk’s batteries can fuse wind, solar and electric car power into single, existing grids that would lead to huge monetary savings for broke municipalities all around the world.“This is within the power of humanity to do,” Musk told the large crowd gathered at Tesla’s design center in a Los Angeles suburb on April 30, 2015. “We have done things like this before. It is not impossible.”

Transform Sub-Saharan Africa’s Power Supply The company had Africa in mind, when it built up the wall-mounted Powerpacks. Just like mobile phone allowed many countries in the continent to surge ahead in internet connectivity, so a battery pack that can power a home allowing millions of natives to skip the limits of the grid. Tesla has promised to make the technology open source, so that others can be inspired to build up their own models using the data. At $3,500 for 10 kilowatt hour version or $3,000 for a 7 kilowatt hours version it is still expensive, albeit, within a couple of years, the price is expected to drop as other models start pouring into the market. Africa is the world’s most energy-scarce continent. Because of the sweeping Sahara desert, strong winds along its coasts and its flat, arid atmosphere, and geothermal reserves down the Rift Valley, the continent has the world’s most elevated reserves of renewable energy resources. Despite the fact that Africa is home to 13% of the global population, only 4% accounts for global energy demand. The Powerpacks could enable millions to jump from no electricity at all to renewables. Sub-Saharan Africa has the largest number of people - more than 600 million people - living without access to power than any other region in the world. The wall mounted Powerpack can supply five hours of power, enabling an enterprising African engineer to scale up the battery’s capability to give consistent energy to homes or businesses. The battery could likewise break Africa’s dependence on fuel chugging generators. In 2012, the total cost of fuel for backup generators used by businesses and households is estimated to have been of at least $5 billion. Today, technology hubs are springing up everywhere on Africa’s urban communities. There are as of now no less than 90 tech hubs in the continent. Kenya is planning to build a tech city, a “silicon savannah,” costing $14.5bn at Konza, 60km far from the capital in Nairobi. Ghana plans to manufacture Hope City, a $10bn innovative center outside Accra, with the objective to transform Ghana into a noteworthy tech player as well. In the meantime, organizations like Facebook and Google have grand plans to deploy wireless internet over the globe utilizing drones or hot-air balloons to carry the connectivity. Albeit, the mix of a solar panel battery and a balloon/drone internet, it might just be a matter of time before the idea of a physical tech city itself turns obsolete. Utilizing new batteries, workplaces and tech innovations hubs could become much more mobile, and turn out to be portable for people in Africa – urban or rural. Tesla’s big sell is its energy security. The batteries will turn out to be a huge relief for those who live in areas prone to storms or unreliable utility grids. The Powerwall can supply a few hours back-up power during power outages. The energy storage revolution has just begun and Tesla and Musk are the trailblazers. But it is the consumers who will make turn the switches on to success, if Tesla makes the batteries much more economic.

horticultural and historical interest. In Joséphine’s honor, Piaget has relinquished itself to a jamboree of rose-inspired gems and horology. Among the sparkling jewelry, watches are an adaptation of its Limelight model called the Limelight Blooming Rose (from £33,700), which transforms into an eight-petal rose when pivoted on the wrist. In the Rose Passion collection (from £28,500), the shape of petals is imitated by baguette-cut stones set jupon-style around the dial, a technique that bestows a naturalistic, tender crinkle to the bezel. Graff Diamonds’ signature floral jewelry watch is to be found in the name FloralGraff (from £57,000), a dainty, mosaic-like piece with eight stylized petals, each featuring a cleaned cabochon sapphire, emerald or ruby, encompassed by a fragile tracery of pavé-set jewels. This is verging on the endless tonal variety that opens a palette of hued stones to the jeweler, watchmaker, and also suits the expanding enthusiasm for métiers d’art – beautifying techniques applied to watches. Space Tourism: the Ultimate Luxury Frontier Thirty years ago, the Boulevard Room at the ritzy Conrad Hilton Hotel in downtown Chicago offered sizzling steaks, an extravagant stage show, and a flash of a teasing peek into the future. At the front of the hall was the “largest hotel ice rink in the county, on which a troupe of the tutu-wearing girls danced for the crowds of diners. Black-tie wearing diners were given a rare glimpse of a dream more grandiose than grand: Space Tourism, a dazzling dream ripe for picking. Albeit, details of the announcement are like gold dust, a Chicago-area newspaper called the Suburbanite Economist wrote that hotel heir and business magnate Barron Hilton, was dickering around the idea of building a hotel on the Moon. The idea disappeared in the coming decades, only to resurface again in 1999, when Hilton was reportedly planning to cut the ribbons at an opening ceremony of a $25 billion space hotel for the idle, space tourists with fat wallets to fly.

Orbital Space Tourism More than 650 people from around the world have signed up for Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo that will take them on an outer space holiday. Of course, the wealthiest are first in line, led by Stephen Hawking, Tom Hanks, Ashton Kutcher, Katy Perry, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to cavort in zero-gravity. If every goes according to the plan, Lady Gaga will become the first singer to perform in space. Space tourism isn’t just a battle against economics and physics. It is a steep mêlée between companies conjuring up luxuries in space to woo tourists with deep, deep pockets. For some of these flights, passengers do not need any anti-gravity training. The 5 hour trip will be stumping up $75,000 by World View Enterprises offers passengers an on-board bar to sip a refreshing drink and take a mighty view of the space from suborbital altitude, all in a luxury flight capsule hoisted by a giant balloon.

Virgin Galactic founder, Richard Branson has never been one to come up with a lackluster trip, or a party for that matter. Be it celebrations on Necker Island with Kate Moss and the likes to celebrate his birthday or the completion of an eerily delightful Space trip. The Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo Space Trip will give its A-list holiday goers access to exclusive Virgin Group events like the G-force training, text flight celebrations in Canyons and mesas of Mojave Desert where cocktails will appear to be working till the dawn. Then there’s Zero-G Weightless Experience by Zero Gravity Corporation, a 90 to 100 minute trip consisting of parabolic arc flights that would leave you flying like a superhero in weightlessness, for people who could pony up $4,950. The parabolic flight is the cheapest of all space-travel gigs that give a Lunar and Martian gravity experience. It offers Zero-G flight suit and merchandize, Regravitation celebration and photos and videos. Unlike other companies offering a host of freebies, the $20 million Dragon Space Trip is a low Earth orbital flight for mega-spenders, by SpaceX founder Elon Musk who wants to revolutionize access to space. The 370- kilometer orbital flight is the first of the revolutionary space flights planned by Musk, who wants to include flights, allowing human exploration and settlement of Mars by 2026 under the company’s Mars One colonization project. Mars One, a private initiative is also training “pioneer settlers” who will live and work on Mars, making it their permanent new home by 2023.

Evolution Of Space Tourism A Russian company, Orbital Technologies launching a hotel in space called “Hotel in the Heavens” in 2016 for the ultra-rich, is the latest example of extreme space holiday making projects. It will cost wealthy Russian nearly $1 million to travel on a Russian Soyuz rocket and a five-day stay, where they will get a glimpse of 16 sunrises and sunsets a day as they orbit Earth. Without a doubt, the prospect of zero-gravity offers all sorts of weightlessness activities that can only be dreamt of on Earth. By contrast, Las Vegas hotel and aerospace entrepreneur Robert Bigelow is betting $500 million on inflatable space habitats on the lunar surface, where opulent spenders can rent a room at $400,000 a day. Being rich has never offered so many luxurious opportunities for space adventure. The world is fast filling up with more and more billionaires and entrepreneurs who’re seeking newer and exciting ways to provide mega-spenders the ultimate hi-tech thrills in the eerily, clam Galaxy. Who knows, in 2030, people could be unwrapping tickets to exploring the solar-system and beyond for Christmas!

The Most Powerful Business Dynasties World’s Largest Family-owned Businesses Before the conglomerates, there was family business. Before the Industrial Revolution in the early 18th century, there was family business. Before the erudition of the Chinese, Greece and the Roman Empire, there was family business. In the post-war era, management experts expected family firms to wane fast, due to the greater ability of professionally-run companies to raise funds and attract top talent. Founding dynasties have held their ground, defying expectations of their demise, and in the recent years, increased their global presence. In a study by Center for Family Business, the 500 largest familyowned companies make up 80-90% of firms worldwide and 19% of the companies in Fortune Global 500, and are salient drivers of GDP and job growth. In the Global Family Business Index, the list of who’s who of brands worldwide: Wal-Mart, Ford and Tyson are all present, as are lesser-known companies like Diersch & SchrÜder, a German mineral oil company that employs only 350 people and yet pulls in $2.5 billion in income. With hard work and sacrifice, they have set the foundations of deep-rooted family culture and entrepreneurial spirit that are pinned to a multigenerational family business. Here are five founding dynasties spanning over a hundred years, across more than three generations that we find incredibly noteworthy.

Maya Penn - a successful Teenprenuer, philanthropist, animator, artist and fashionista Meet the impressive, Maya Penn who’s working to save the planet before her 18th birthday Every child has a guileless ambition to be like someone when he or she grows up. Although, the ambition changes every year, it stirs up the sublime feeling – of being invincible, and that there’s nothing in the world that could stop them. Being afraid, is not something you can find in their dictionary. As they grow, some of them never get past the dreaming phase. Call it an entrepreneurial bogeyman, but its fear that leaves them paralyzed into a limbo, consumed by fear of failure, inadequacy and risks.

Maya’s Ideas for the Planet The accomplishments of a 15-year-old entrepreneur can put adult social entrepreneurs to shame. Maya Penn may not be an official millennial, but her business-success story has already appeared in Forbes, Ebony, Huffington Post, TIME, Black Enterprise, Cosmopolitan Magazine, and Young Entrepreneur and has done three TEDs on environmental issues. A high-school sophomore, Penn began her entrepreneurial adventure by starting her company Maya’s Ideas, an eco-friendly clothing line at the tender age of eight. A passionate environmentalist, she learnt about how some dyes in clothing or the process of making clothing items was harmful to the people and the planet by generating a huge amount of toxic waste. She tied her love for the environment to her bag full of environment ideas to carry them all in her nonprofit eco-friendly clothing line. The Canton, Georgia-based eco-designer has spent a large part of her childhood designing and making hand-made eco-friendly clothing and accessories out of organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, and vintage silks and wools. Even, Samuel L. Jackson has got one of her eco-friendly scarves! Six years, and her organization had thrived, coming to nations all across the globe. Designer is one of the many titles that Maya claims. On a philanthropic side, her nonprofit is shipping eco-friendly sanitary pads to girls in developing nations by joining forces with MedShare, a nonprofit that redistributes surplus medical supplies needy hospitals in developing countries. In addition, Penn donates 10 t 20 percent of her profits to charities and environmental organizations, including Live Thrive Atlanta and the Captain Planet Foundation. The young Atlanta native has also established her own, Maya’s Ideas 4 the Planet. Penn is also a self-described coder. She codes for her company’s first website by learning basic HTML at the age of 10. Currently, she’s learning Python, and not because she wanted to start a business around coding, but she sees the importance of understanding technology tools much important to an entrepreneur. She is somewhat being familiar with coding, scripting and programing.

Artist. Animator. Philanthropist. Sophomore Penn’s sincere hope is to influence others. As relentlessly hopeful as just a 14-year-old environmental activist can be, Penn’s definitive message is that you can make a difference – fear and failure are barriers that need to be overcome. A couple of years back, she heard about a local reuse-and recycle-event called Metro Atlanta Kids Recycle Day, and although it was too little for her taste, she printed her own flyers to post around the city. While she’s especially centered around pollinators right now, she also deeply cares about other essential climate issues, for example, Keystone XL. Obviously, it’s hard not to be in awe of her legion of accolades. She’s written and designed two children’s books with environmental messages - Lucy and Sammy Save the Environment and Wild Rhymes — that are printed on recycled paper. She secured a grant from The Pollination Project, an establishment that gives $1,000 seed financing to entrepreneurs who have a strong concept to make a change in the world. She is also a part of The Pollination Project’s Youth Grantmaking Advisory Board, where she creates youth-centered environmental tasks.

Causing a BUZZ to save the Bees Penn is homeschooled, so that allows enough room for parental support and flexibility around her passion and dreams. “If I have a speaking engagement on a Wednesday, and Wednesday is a school day, I can still make the homework up afterwards,” she says. Penn credits her altruistic, love for environment to her upbringing. Her mom, Deidre Penn, who has homeschooled the high-school with her spouse, John, said they raised Maya around environmental considering. Penn’s perpetual supply of innovativeness and enthusiasm is constantly centered on environmental protection; she says her family has long been into recycling and organic gardening. Penn was always encouraged, empowered to become a multifaceted woman. Her love for the environmental isn’t limited to just Maya’s Ideas. Animation is her first love. When she was around 3 years of age, she learned about how animation works, how cartoons were made, and how animators created cartoons that she saw on a kid’s tele show. She’s wanted to create her own animated series ever since. It’s been 11 years, and she still has not changed her mind. This 15-year-old has an animated series in the works too. It’s about pollinators, in which butterflies, honeybees and hummingbirds get to be superheroes that save the planet. Oh, and she’s working on a memoir, since you know, her two children’s books weren’t really long books. Does she every watch TV or sleep?

Stay Fearless! Peen has insights that almost every environmentalist has experienced in his or her life: If there’s inaction, it’s not because we’re unconcerned. It’s because we’re overwhelmed. During her school visits, she meets young people who’re her age, who couldn’t care less about the planet. “But there are a lot who do care that just don’t know what to do,” she says. “What’s going on in the environment seems like such a big deal that they have to do a big action, and they don’t know what that action should be.” Then there’s a self-fulfilling prophecy that whatever we’re going to, isn’t going to matter in life. “The reason why it seems like there’s nothing happening,” she says, “is because people are scared to do anything because they think that nothing’s going to happen!” The issue has thus been rooted out, however take it from an ace: The most bantam activity prompts the greatest changes. It can have major expansive influence, whether that individual knows it or not. Also, that individual may have been terrified and may have been dubious. Be that as it may, they felt free to do it in any case! Her wise words, then, to all the baffled entrepreneurs out there? “You don’t need to have a huge amount of confidence to would all that you like to do. It’s okay to be afraid. Change will certainly come. Penn has a great future ahead of her. She’s a passionate, fearless entrepreneur. Above all, she’s an inspiration for social entrepreneurs who fear they’re not making enough change and give up too soon. Maya has garnered enough positive response from people all over the world. People have been inspired by her to start their own companies, the oldest person is 75 and the youngest, 8. What’s next for Maya Penn? In the middle of thinking about school, spending quality time with her family and friends and working on her ecofriendly clothing line, her nonprofit and her accessory line, she’s taking a shot at Malicious Dishes, an animated series about viruses in the computer. Penn has made it her business to find solutions to save the Earth.

A New Paradigm for Modern Supply Chain Management Emerging Digital Business Models will shake up Supply Chain Planning Market It’s been barely a week, and yet our minds are still bustling with all the great insights from a whirlwind of an event, The Gartner Supply Chain Executive Conference in Scottsdale, AZ, one of the largest supply chain events of 2015. Not many know this, but the conference is rooted in a very humble, laid-back event that was started by AMR Research way back in 1990s. After Gartner acquired AMR in 2009, Gartner imbued extra marketing and organization muscle into the event, making it grander than life. The event is today, a lot more profitable for Gartner than it ever was for AMR, with more than 1500 attendees participating every year, and a perpetually growing exhibitor and sponsor program The Supply Chain event had several keynote and presentations. Although, this year, Gartner had sorted the presentation to three fundamental types: those led by top Gartner analysts, company case studies, and vendor-sponsored sessions. There was a theme at the conference with respect to “digitizing” your business and your supply chain, as you may know, this is one of the most intriguing issues of the day. Top consultants at McKinsey and a few others discussed the importance of

digitizing their business immediately or go the dinosaur way. Digitization of business is something that stands out enough to be noticed by CEOs, it is at the top of the corporate priority list, naturally filtering down to the supply chain department. The convenient thing about digitization from a solution providers perspective is that it has turned into an expansive umbrella under which an extensive variety of technologies have found their place: Internet of Things, visibility, analytics, mobile, trading partner integration, omni-channel commerce, and more and that’s just the beginning - while noticing that any old bit of programming obviously is a type of digitization. Peter Sondergaard, Senior vice president at Gartner said that virtually everything that can be “instrumented” and connected in the following 5 to 10 years, with countless new connected devices and objects getting added to the evergrowing grid. This and the various other types of digitization listed above are going to have significant impacts both on organizations and supply chain network. Among the most intriguing will be the formation of new services associated with physical

events supply chains –since a large number of companies are already going in the nascent direction. Caterpillar’s head of supply chain Frank Crespo said his organization has one kind of burrowing machine where clients upload the geology of a given site, and the blade of the machine is controlled from a far distance through GPS. Both the executives made one extremely fascinating point: could the Internet of Things and related technologies sidestep hindrances to collaborate with customers? Let’s forget data integration efforts and reluctance to share data, your connected devices are going to report on their own what is really going on in your customer’s supply chain. How about that? Sondergaard additionally stressed on the need for “bi-modular” supply chains. Here Mode 1 includes traditional supply chains, focused on expense, proficiency, consistency, and so on. Mode 2 is centered on the problematic, the advanced, the experimental, and so on. Stodgy old chemical organization BASF has framed a new group for mode 2. After Sondergaard came Cisco’s VP of Supply Chain, John Kern. A selfproclaimed “Internet of Things” cynic, not so long ago, has now found IoE religion. Kern made quite a few decent observations, saying that digital offers a massive gain for companies that can squeeze the best out of technologies.

88

Industry Leaders Magazine [june 2015]

He offered an intriguing illustration. In spite of clearly a long-term focus on assembling quality and yield, Cisco wasn’t in the place it needed to be. Today, it has been able to process tons of data from its manufacturing processes and apply some cutting-edge analytics to discover patterns, insights and leading indicators that it couldn’t identify using conventional techniques. Moreover, Cisco has installed new sensors on every piece of manufacturing equipment in its Malaysian factory, with an end goal to better understand power consumption. Cisco can now save 20-30 % of its electricity costs using smart analytics. Isn’t this a brilliant example of how digitization can drive revolutionary benefits? Companies can similarly take monitoring and analysis to a global basis, across factories worldwide to monitor how they consume power and save electricity costs. Reuben Slone of Walgreens, one of the most renowned US supply chain executives said supply chains need to be centered on three “outcomes.” It begins with proper item accessibility - that drives income and sales boost. At the same time, the item availability needs to be achieved with maximum inventory productivity and cost productivity. The event was attended by execs from companies at every phase of the demand-driven value network maturity model. Yet, there was one common

theme, uniting all of these companies – the need to achieve better visibility at every stage of the supply chain. Albeit numerous vendors talked about visibility as an idea, the definition appeared to shift significantly, and the discussions went from the manufacturing process to product innovation stages, S&OP and S&OE, planning and logistics, all the way through to sell-side functions. What is especially satisfying to see is that the objective of end-to-end visibility is a top-of-psyche issue for a number of people who attended the event. The E2open breakout session with Dell showcased the multi-level visibility that has been at the heart of the organization’s virtual control tower for quite a while, permitting the business to respond effectively and successfully taking

into account a segment-specific approach, and track the commits across the supply network. Digital supply chains were additionally a hotly debated issue from the Gartner viewpoint. Taking into account the thought that the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Internet of Everything (IoE) will make a constant association for information at each point in the inventory network, the future hopes to turn into something significantly more information driven. This was an incredible “moment of clarity,” especially taking into account the fact that business networks can be transformed data can be standardized, transformed and put into context for greater visibility and shared in an actionable format.

International Marketing Gone Wild! Access to mobile phones and mobile phone technologies among the poorest populations are transforming how business is done, allowing vast marginal populations a chance to acquire wealth and opening up new opportunities for global business visionaries. Remember when BRIC was all the rage? Every marketing expert was touting these four powerhouses-Brazil, Russia, India, and China. This was the future; the pot of gold at the end of the overseas rainbow where millions, even billions of new customers were itching to get their paws on the developed world’s products and services. Where are we today? •

Brazil is fast heading down the disastrous road to economic oblivion and is looking more and more like Venezuela every day. Russian corruption and lack of economic cohesion has been made much worse by increased Western economic sanctions. The Russian economy was seriously ill before the sanctions, with only the continued infusion of the lifeblood of high oil prices keeping it off life support. Now, with oil at $50 a barrel, what will happen? India remains India even with the election of a pro-business Prime Minister. India, as always, is a model of controlled chaos yet it is a functioning democracy with enormous potential. But its legacy of redtape, restrictions, tariffs and inefficient business practices makes it difficult for international marketers to thrive. China, with its economic engine fueled by supplying low cost merchandise to the world sputtering, has seen its economy contract as its factories churning out this stuff have been silenced as the worlds’ markets have contracted. Economic woes just add strain to its broken political system.

Industry Leaders Magazine [june 2015]

With its authoritarian regime wobbling on the ancient legs of its leaders, China is poised for dramatic change. Eventually, this will lead to vast opportunity. But when? So, even without a quantum shift in communication technologies, it was time to look further afield for other markets. In the days of BRIC, it was still the traditional global marketing model used where “prospects” had to be upwardly mobile, middle class with bank accounts, credit cards, credit worthiness and of course, disposable income. Socio-economic level (SEL) was king. So of course that limited the reservoir of new customers. The game-changer now is the rapid adoption of mobile phones not only among the upwardly mobile but especially among the “have-nots.” With pre-paid plans, many impoverished people who once fell below the radar of the direct marketers are now accessible, communicating and becoming entrepreneurial which in itself, will raise their incomes. So savvy marketers that understand how phones are being used can tap into heretofore untappable markets. The limits will be set only by their amount of imagination and creativity. In Africa, once ignored by marketers and with good reason, start-ups like M-pesa which allow money transfers, bill payments and consumer purchases, even school tuition payments, has blossomed into a $21 billion industry. More importantly its model of empowering the impoverished has inspired 200 startups around the world. Kopo-Kopo founded by Americans, allows small retailersthe lifeblood of most emerging economies-to accept digital payments. M-Kopa is allowing poor rural villagers to switch from kerosene lamps to electric lights by making regular payments of a few pennies a day and even save money in the bargain. Money that can now be spent on other things. Can’t this model be adapted for other goods and services? 65% of households in Sub-Saharan African had at least one mobile phone in 2013 so this extends well beyond the traditional middle class target group. Easypaisa in Pakistan moves $3.5 billion in payment transfers and transactions annually. bKash in Bangladesh moves $4 billion after being in business only 2 years. India, as usual, is proceeding more slowly but the growth potential is exponentially greater. Mobile transactions over the next year could skyrocket to $350 billion. Moneyon Mobile in India predicts that within 3-5 years 30% of India’s payment transactions will be online.

So what does all this mean? And how does one not in the mobile app business benefit? Improved communications lead to less isolation, more savings and countless small entrepreneurial business opportunities. This allows wealth to develop among even impoverished populations. Even savings of pennies a day spread over massive consumer bases can create vast amounts of wealth overall. Company visionaries that can see these opportunities in underdeveloped world regions and create a service or product may harvest huge rewards. Those businesses needing more traditional marketing methods can also take advantage of large population groups that now are accumulating disposable income. Global databases are appearing now that reach well beyond the usual suspects of upper middle class credit card holders who speak fluent English. Mobile phone numbers and email addresses are being captured so the contact channels are expanding. The ever-important forums and idea-exchanges for global marketers disappeared for awhile which was a loss for everyone. But it is making a comeback now, largely through the presence of a few international conferences centering upon the new technologies like the recent TFM&A Conference in London and the expanded presence of organizations like the Global Marketing Alliance which offers annual industry summits and valuable networking opportunities among its 24,000 members in 75 countries. www.the-gma.com.

NuScale Power has created a new kind of nuclear power plant: one that is safe, reliable, and economical. The innovative design incorporates all of the components for steam generation and heat exchange into a single integrated unit, the NuScale Power Module™ (NPM). Using up to 12 of these 50MWe (gross) NPMs, a NuScale nuclear power plant can provide 600 MWe (gross) of safe, carbon-free, electrical generation. The compact design of the NPM allows it to be built and assembled in a U.S. factory, then shipped to a prepared site for easy deployment. The design eliminates many costly, complex systems while cutting-edge manufacturing cuts time and cost of production. The result: a power source that is simultaneously safe, reliable, scalable, carbon-free, and economical. Innovation: the Element of Nu™.
