Samsung Electronics is on the edge of revolutionizing the tech industry. The tech giant along with an affiliated laboratory has developed a technique for growing large scale graphene, creating the possibility of mass manufacturing it for consumer electronic devices. Scientists at Sungkyunkwan University's School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering and the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) were successful in making big sheets of graphene by growing it on a layer of specifically treated germanium. The graphene starts growing in various places and then unites, consolidating many small sheets into one large form of seamless pure graphene. The new discovery will help researchers make use of of graphene's properties such as incredible power, sleekness, enormous flexibility and great conductivity. Samsung and other device makers are very keen to incorporate it into the future generation of wearable and flexible electronics which could lead to the possibility of the wearable technology being manufactured on a massive scale. Graphene was discovered physicists at the UK's University of Manchester, Great Britain, in 2004. The Nobel Prize was conferred to Sir Andre Geim and Sir Kostya Novoselov, who discovered the material. The UK government is still working towards developing the material, while companies such as Samsung, Nokia, and IBM are also experimenting with it.

Google's Project Loon is off to a quick start. The search giant revealed last week that one of its Wi-Fi broadcasting balloon Ibis-167 circled the globe in a record 22 days. Previously, Google had estimated a total of 33 days for Ibis-167 to successfully move around the globe. Now starting its second lap around the world, the Loon balloon marked the project's 500,000th kilometer. Google explained on Project Loon's Google+ account that it enjoyed a few loop-de-loops over the Pacific Ocean before moving east on the winds towards Chile and Argentina, and then made its way back around near Australia and New Zealand, where it was actually launched. On the way, it caught a ride on the Roaring Forties-strong west-to-east winds in the southern hemisphere that act like an autobahn in the sky, where its balloons can swiftly whizz over oceans to get to where people actually need them. Since the last few months Google's team has been working towards making the balloons stay up and on track. Google has said it makes use of intricate algorithms to manage the balloons' flight path even during rough winds when circling the polar area. In all the four seasons of the year, these devices have flown through wind speeds ranging from two to seventy- five knots. It was possible because Google has been gathering data determining the wind speeds and weather conditions from the balloons and has begun to improve forecast and balloon course twice as fast in advance.

In an effort to keep the world's second largest economy on track for steady growth, China's leaders have adopted new measures to accelerate spending on railway lines, upgrade housing for lowincome households and lower tax rates for smaller companies. The move comes as signs mount that China's economy continues to be sluggish, increasing fears it may expand less than the 7.5 percent that the country's leaders have targeted. According to the factory data released beginning this week showed that business conditions in the first quarter mostly remained dull. China's economy has been slackened after a decade of double-digit growth as its communist leaders try to shift the economy's focus to improving the livelihood of its citizens and establishing a long-term sustainable funding channel for infrastructure projects ''We will find innovative ways including fiscal and financial methods to steady economic growth,'' the cabinet said in a statement on the government's website. The government said it would reduce tax rates for smaller businesses by relaxing the criteria that allows them to get bigger tax breaks. This policy will be extended to the end of 2016, the government said.

In what would be the highest jury award ever in a patent case, Apple is seeking more than $2 billion in damages from Samsung for allegedly infringing phones. The court papers submitted by Apple representatives say that Samsung has been copying Apple's technology and products as well as features and designs. Samsung has deluged markets with devices that infringe Apple's patents. ''The evidence in this case will be that Samsung copied the iPhone and it also took many other Apple inventions that had not yet appeared in Apple products,'' said Apple attorney Harold McElhinny. ''Samsung did not stop with competitive intelligence,'' he said. ''Copying the iPhone was literally built into the Samsung development process.'' California-based Apple has also demanded that market leader Samsung pay a $40 royalty for each smart phone that supposedly has technology conceived by Apple. That is more than five times more than the amount sought in the 2012 trial. If Apple prevails, the costs to Samsung could reach nearly $2 billion. If Apple loses the litigation, costs are expected to be about $6 million. Additionally Samsung hopes to draw Google into the battle by calling the engineers who designed the search giant's Android system, which is used by Samsung's smartphones to provide concrete evidence of them working on these features independently of Apple's work.

SolarCity, America's largest provider of solar services to people who can't afford to pay upfront for a system is now looking to do the same for off-grid solar in developing nations. SolarCity has teamed up with venture firms Vulcan Capital and Omidyar Network to invest $7 million into Off-Grid Electric, a Tanzania-based company offering solar lighting services in Africa. The investment round is part of a flurry of venture activity in the off-grid solar sector. The small investment provides SolarCity a passage into the booming off-grid solar market where mobile money platforms are capacitating pay-as-you-go services in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. It's a seemingly natural fit for a company like SolarCity, which has helped pioneer the solar services model in the U.S. Off-Grid Electric offers a mobile payment platform for consumers in Africa that allows them to buy solar lighting in small amounts, rather than having to pay for the whole solar system in advance. This new approach is fast becoming highly attractive in the developing world due to the universal use of mobile phones. The model is also known as solar in a bottle, as it allows consumers to purchase solar lighting services in small amounts, just as they would kerosene lanterns.

Google on Monday announced a partnership with eyewear giant Luxottica Group, the maker of luxury and sports eyewear, to develop design and distribute new versions of the Android-based Glass eyewear. The collaboration will see experts from both Google and Luxottica who will work with fashion designers and wearable tech experts to develop new versions of the wearable computing devices to make sporting a computer on the face more fashion-friendly. Luxottica is expected to help broaden Glass' appeal. It specifically names Oakley and Ray-Ban as two brands that will be included in making eyewear with Google Glass technology implemented. However, the company also owns Vogue-Eyewear, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Alain Mikli, and Arnette, and could well expand its Glass lines to encompass one or more of them as well. Andrea Guerra, Luxottica Chief Executive Officer believes that the strategic partnership with Google is the new way forward for the eye wear industry to evolve and satisfy the needs of all consumers. Luxottica is an Italian company that led the eyewear market in 2012 with 12.4 percent shares. The company has a 10-year history in incorporating wearable technology into its Ray-Ban and Oakley glasses. Oakley has already delved into wearable tech, with ski goggles that display an athlete's speed, direction, and location and its Thump sunglasses are outfitted with headphones for listening to music on the go.

There is a certain eternal appeal of 20th century anti-capitalist classic 'The Great Gatsby'. A glamorous character delivering brilliant entrepreneurship lessons that resonate in the world of business even after 88years of its release! One of the greatest lessons that charismatic Jay Gatsby can teach is the ability to have intense knowledge of key strategic audience to project a lasting brand impression. How can a brand survive if it fails at capturing the mind and hearts of its target audience? In Jay's case it was the goal of attaining Daisy which made him do his homework - tailoring himself (the brand) to suit her likes and dislikes. In efforts to reach the target audience (Daisy) he even mastered the art of networking to reach her in an intriguing fashion. His superficially charming essence and extravagant marketing - not shameless self-promotion, furthermore made a lasting impression on the rest of the society. A businessman with humble roots (penniless) creates a successful career reflecting a vital role of focus and ambition in his life. He was poor boy from a poor family who reinvented himself; the transformation played a symbiotic role with the disagreeable steps he took in his life with extreme determination and perseverance making him a self-made millionaire at the tender age of 32. Was his ambition to be a millionaire? No. During the complete years of his transformation, he had only one goal in his mind, to win the heart of one woman - Daisy. Sometimes an entrepreneur has to balance out short term goals in order to reach long term goals in his life adaptability and determination here, are two prime skills necessary. 026

Leonardo DiCaprio portraying JayGatsby
Effective communication is where most entrepreneurs fail. Jay Gatsby made mental notes about other people much before he met them in order to connect with them in better manner. In order to reach out people's mind, he tried to see it through their eyes - it not only helped him at understanding how their mind worked but also about their interests and desires. Same applies in modern day communication.
In fact, it also helps in polishing empathy. Most importantly, it adds trustworthiness in the communication bringing a much needed element of competitive advantage. Interesting how a fictional character from the golden age can enlighten us dynamic business lessons in today's times!

Prince Hamlet's life events resonate influential leadership lessons that not just leaders but every hero must learn for his survival. A flawed hero, who can barely stand up for his own self, goes onto carrying unambiguous task charged upon him by the ghost of his own father - avenge the King's death. The Prince's behavior and actions are quickly paralyzed due to lack of 'credibility' of information given by the ghost, nevertheless the Prince sets on the mission without a plan or steely determination. Young Hamlet's psychological components are stained due to lack of willpower, refusal to get outside help from the people of his monarch, exceeding intelligence-empathy, absence of mentors, constant vacillation and wavering emotional state. Despite the clear objective of avenging his father's death, the Prince sets himself into a deep slumber of isolation and poetically enticing depression, further procrastinating and sidelining from the actual goal. In the end, the fallen prince is reduced to his own death as well as those surrounding him due to his unplanned efforts to eliminate the cause of evil. Every CEO in a company is centric to similar circumstances where a major factor is actively involved - a clear goal with information whether credible or not, leading to a goal focused activity. Naturally in such scenarios, the first task is to not only question the credibility of the information but to seek out more from reliable internal and external sources. Much alike the prince, executives have multiple people beneath their monarch to unquestionably carry out the objectives. A leader's vision turns into a personal cause the moment it is blends with passion and genius. A true visionary always inspires people to support his cause and follow him. Flat refusal to involve people in order to support the 'personal' cause either motivated by modesty or exceeding empathy is the exact moment when a leader fails at leadership test. A goal blinded by momentary distractions, procrastination and tardiness never manifests, resulting into a waste of resources - in Hamlet's case its 'time' and 'right moments'. It proves lack of strategy and indecisiveness involved during pursuits of objectives. 028

An unfocused behavior mirrors a pendulum diverting the self from task oriented activities due to emotional or intellectual excuses or in pursuit of something shiny. Hamlet failed at management due to his inept ability at managing people, practices involved, decisiveness, determination and a stable emotional state to carry out tasks.
The Bard of Avon may not have written these plays with leadership lessons in mind nonetheless his ability to plump human psyche provides invaluable lessons from the fallen hero's life events and can amusingly help CEO's turn tragedies in to success stories.

Some people are born with the kernel of leadership, while some evolve into being leaders through events that transform their lives. Some insist on learning lessons by making mistakes, while others seek knowledge from a mentor. A one-dimensional hotshot celebrity attorney, Julian Mantle, after having a heart attack in the courtroom, decides to leave behind the world he had woven and reinvent himself in the Himalayas. Transformed into a sagely monk, Julian mentors his apprentice John, providing mystic lessons. ''Get out of your comfort zone and do things that scare you, the Universe support those who are brave'' said Julian Mantle to naive John. One common trait of every leader is bravery - a constant hunger for embracing an evolved self that has knocked mockingly on the doors where fear resides. An effective leader should not only have the courage to lead through difficult situations but also accept its outcomes. Getting out of comfort zone requires pioneering efforts in the tasks adding a new level of innovation. 'Kaizen' Never ending improvement
What most leaders get confused with is that a selfless service towards the organization can be filled with compassion and virtues without being spineless or hesitant. A selfless leader often carries the torch of the welfare of the organization and his subordinates before him or his personal agenda in an authoritative and inspirational manner - which is the greatest
strength of an organization. Last of all the monk's teaching emphasizes on 'joriki' mental concentration, 'kaizen' never-ending improvement, and a mantra that ''every hour spent reflecting on the disappointments of the past is an hour stolen from seeing the possibilities that your future holds''.

Twenty-first century business success stories would be incomplete without mentioning one brand which has all American roots Coca-Cola! A symbol of consumerism, pop culture and carefree living - Coca Cola is synonymous with the American way of life. A trademark widely recognized by 94% of the planet's population, Coca-Cola is the second most universally understood phrase, coming right after OK.

From its humble roots in a pharmacy to being a multinational beverage corporation, the Coca-Cola Company represents the struggles of an average American. Following American household right from the World War II to the Great Depression to the 1928 Olympics, Coca-Cola has been a Universal symbol of American struggles, culture and way of life and it still continues to do so for years to come.
Invented by an Atlanta based pharmacist John Stith Pemberton, Coca-Cola was inspired by one simple aim - to create an elixir that would give people a moment of refreshment and uplift, something that would make the world a happier place! Using his pharmacist background, Dr. John Pemberton made a drink by stirring up a fragrant, caramel-colored liquid and combining it with carbonated water. The drink was sampled by customers who all agreed on one thing - the drink was something different, it was special! Dr. Jacob's then put the drink on sale for five cents per glass. Pemberton was a pharmacist with poor marketing skills. Frank Robinson, Pemberton's bookkeeper, stepped in and helped him register the drink's formula with the patent office naming it 'Coca-Cola', design the logo as well as write the slogan, ''The Pause That Refreshes''. The drink failed to be the cause of ringing tills in its first year. A year later, Dr. Jacob died of stomach cancer in 1888, not living to see the commercial success the drink would achieve in the coming century.

Soon after Dr. Jacobs's death, an Atlanta-based businessman, Asa Griggs Candler rescued the business becoming the first president of the company via securing the rights to the Coca-Cola Company for $2,300. What followed next were his brilliance, vision and solid brand management that changed a mere refreshment drink to the great American symbol. A born salesman, Candler hired traveling salesmen to pass out complimentary coupons for a free coke with the aim of making it a national brand. Not only coupons, Candler also tried plastering Coca-Cola logo on calendars, posters, notebooks and bookmarks in order to reach out to customers on a wider scale. With the inevitably increasing popularity of the drink due to its aggressive promotion and on the arrival of bottling in 1894, Candler set up three more syrup plants in Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles. 068

The company's distribution expanded to newer regions, increasing the significance of advertising. By the end of 1920, Coca-Cola advertising began reflecting the prosperity everyday American life. It showed middle class families taking part in activities that were once reserved only for elite Americans. It relied on immaculately dressed young women and men as its spokesperson. Its advertising promised prosperity to the American folks. It was the same decade when under the leadership of Woodruff, the world's first six pack carriers were introducted to encourage people to take their drinks home. During the Olympic Games in Amsterdam, the US team travelled to Amsterdam, with Coca-Cola rallying behind them pushing the development and distribution of the drink.

With the stock market crash, the Great Depression followed leaving huge economic impact, controlling the lives of American people and directly threatening the sales of Coca-Cola. Right before the crash, Coca-Cola has its famous slogan ''The Pause that Refreshes'' debuted in the Saturday Evening Post. With such heavy economic blows, would Coca-Cola take a step back and relook upon its advertising? No. It was Coca-Cola, it promised a prosperous future, and it assured people that everything would return to normal.

It advertising although unrealistic for some, showed an impeccably well groomed and confident man, holding a morning newspaper unacknowledging the great depression. The advertisement provided an escape into an idealized reality of America. And people bought it! It showed images of women leisurely taking a break from household chores refreshing her with a coke. It showed images of young carefree girls clad in bathing suits to the universal positive image -Santa Claus who restore confidence in people that goodness still existed. It depicted normal everyday life. One of its advertisements read: "The pause that refreshes with ice-cold Coca-Cola is America's favorite moment." And undeniably it did. In 1941, Robert Woodruff, the then president of Coca-Cola boosted the morale of US troops participating in the war with a new order, ''to see to see that every man in uniform gets a bottle of Coca-Cola for 5 cents, wherever he is and whatever it costs the Company." The new order requested shipment of 3 million filled bottled as well as materials and equipment for 10 bottling plants in different areas of the world twice every month. Around 5 million bottles of coke were consumed by military service personnels alone during the war. Within a few months, Coca-Cola opened its first plant abroad following 64 more bottling plants in Europe and the Pacific by borrowing $5.5 million. By the end of the World War II Coca-Cola emerged as a symbol of friendship and refreshment holding people hands throughout the times of conflict.

By the end of mid-thirties a new competitor had already emerged into the market - Pepsi. It offered twelve ounces of Pepsi-Cola instead of six ounces that Coca-Cola did for the same price. The company quickly started gaining more consumers. Families with tighter budget started buying Pepsi, and in 1937, Pepsi had gained a profit of over $9.5 million! Wallace Mack, the President of Pepsi-Cola, used the newest medium of advertising: The Radio using a Pepsi jingle. People would call up radio station and ask them to play the catchy jingle.

On the other hand, Coca-Cola has no counter moves this time to regain its spotlight. Instead, Coca-Cola used a series of strategies showcasing its brand through its interactive way of advertising. According to a survey by American Legion magazine of GIs, consumers preferred Coke over Pepsi with a ration of 8:1. The company was able to capitalize heavily due its favorable position in the hearts and minds as an American icon. At one time, Pepsi even complained of unfair treatment, accusing Time Magazine of favoritism, by doing a story on Coke - as the spirit of American Life due to the mere fact that Coke paid to advertised in the magazine. Those times were so innocent, who would have imagined the rivalry between the two companies that was yet to come!

It was early 1980's when people were going fitness crazy, Roberto Goizueta, then the CEO of The Coca-Cola Company introduced a new strategy called 'intelligent risk taking'. It led to the introduction of Diet Coke, the first addition to the Coca-Cola family. Within two years, the drink became the second most popular drink in the word. Can you guess which one was the first? Coca-Cola, of course! The intelligent risk taking initiative also introduced a new taste of Coca-Cola, changing the formula for the first time in 99years. It received a thunderous negative feedback from consumers who were emotionally attached to the original coke, receiving over 8000 written complaints every day. Coca-Cola management gave in to the consumers demands, and revived its old formula.

Gone are those days when YouTube was just an amateur video site on the Internet. The YouTube that we see now has become a global platform of raw talent discovery giving us musicians, video bloggers, movie-makers, and cats on world domination! Founded in 2009, Maker Studios a Culver City, California-based company is one of the largest independent multichannel networks on YouTube with over 55,000 channels, 5.5 million page views and 380 million subscribers a month. It is affiliated with YouTube channels helping them with programming, funding,
cross-promotion, partner management, digital rights, monetization, as well as sales and development in return for a small portion of the advertising money that the channel generates. Channels like Epic Rapes Battles of History, which duly receive a hundred million hits, generating thousands of dollars from advertising money, pay a
lion's share of it to Maker Studios. Co-founded by Lisa Donovan, former CEO Danny Zappin, Scott Katz, Kassem Gharaibeh, Shay Carl Butler, Ben Donovan and Philip DeFranco, the company in 2012, closed a $36 million round of financing led by Time Warner Investments.
Maker Studio earns approximately $1 to %3 for every thousand views in ad revenue of which Google takes away 45% of its share, leaving the rest to Maker and content creators.
Its other investors include Upfront Ventures as well as Greycroft Partners. Maker Studio's most popular channels include PewDiePie, a famous internet gaming persona,
whose channel has garnered more than 25 million subscribers and is currently YouTube's single most subscribed star. Other famous channels the Network owns are Epic Rap
Battles of History, Tessa Violet, KassemG, Peter Shukoff, famous celebrity rapper Snoop Lion and actors Robert De Niro and Kevin Smith.

With the acquisition of Maker Studios, Disney executives can not only receive heavy data from the world of short digital videos but also spot emerging trends. It means the company will be able to access insights on video consumption as well as video production. Maker Studio's viewership is far more than Viacom's Nickelodeon. And with the rapid explosion of smartphones and tablets used by young adults and pre-teens who watch more and more videos online to access media, Disney will now be once again at the nucleus of the prosperous
entertainment industry. According to Variety's Marc Graser, Disney has lagged behind especially in regards to youthful media consumption with its interactive business being the worstperforming division of the company. Walt Disney Company CEO Robert Iger said in a press release announcing the acquisition that ''Short-form online video is growing at an astonishing place and with Maker Studios, Disney will now be at the center of this dynamic industry with an unmatched combination of advanced technology
and programming expertise and capabilities''. Arguably one of the biggest weak links of Disney is that fact that it has been unable to tap full potential of young adults market. Although, the acquisition does not promise a green and healthy path for Disney, the amount of risk involved is quite accountable. Disney still needs to figure out a strategy to make full use of Maker Studios potential in order to garner more views and create quality content using its own marketing and production.
Maker Studio is currently planning to launch its very own video site, showcasing talents of its channels in its efforts to branch out from YouTube. This means, Disney may not get the audience it wishes to tap if the new site fails.

Industry Leaders Magazine APRIL 2014
Finalization of the deal met with several hurdles. It had ex-employees to ex-CEO's filling lawsuit, seeking to block the billion dollar acquisition. In a lawsuit, filed by Andy
Faberlle, an ex-employee of Maker Studio and a shareholder stated that the company had illegally obtained its shares from him and several others in order to outplay votes
in favor of the merger with Disney. The lawsuit requested Maker Studio voting in favor of the deal be rescind, or if completed, must be unwound.
Another lawsuit that followed in opposition of the merger was Maker Studio ex-CEO Danny Zappin and a few other executives seeking to block the shareholder votes. The lawsuit requests were denied by Los Angeles Superior Court.
In the past, Maker Studio had been funded by Upfront Ventures, with one condition that Zappin wasn't allowed to be the CEO or on the board of Directors since had a felony - drug dealing past. At many other instances, Maker Studio's board had
decided to fire Zappin, due to his increasingly erratic behavior and other legal troubles in the past. In February, Zappin had offered to buy Maker for $200 or sell his stake at a valuation of $400 million. Another company, Relativity Media, played
a surprise cameo in the whole drama, trying to outbid Disney by offering $1.5 million. However, the deal had already been finalized and it was too late for Relativity to make a purchase.

Eyebrows were certainly raised when Disney dropped $1 billion on Maker Studio which certainly hasn't made any profit yet since its inception. The case of Disney buying Maker Studio is quite similar to the one Wall Street recently witnessed, Facebook buying Whatsapp for $19 billion. Both the companies seem to have similar asset valuation system - if the company you're acquiring has a bigger user base, it is worth billions! The deal was closed with Disney paying
$500 million in cash and stocks, as well as a performance bonus of $450 million. An additional bonus of $100 million in incentive payouts is given to employees and executives. Maker Studio's roughly 365 employee's right from the in-house production department to advertising and sales will now be a part of Disney. Some of Maker Studio's senior management has already signed contracts with Disney. So what doesn't come with the deal? Technically, Disney will
not own the ownership of films which are a part of Maker Studio Network; however it acquired the rights to distribute, edit or sell their videos. Under special terms and conditions which were established, creators from the Maker Network who upload their content, agree to the site's non-exclusive and royalty-free license which allows Maker Studio to distribute, edit or sell videos. What is not likely to change is that fact that Maker Studio-affiliated creators will get to profit from their videos the same way it did in the past for a longer period.
The most exciting part of the deal is that, Maker Studio at Disney's expenses will not get to launch its own video site, which will account for very strong ad revenue if the site works. It also means that the company won't have to have any of its profits with Google anymore. Entertainment companies acquiring YouTube Multi-Channel Networks has happened in the past. In 2013, DreamWorks Animation had acquired AwesomenessTV for $117 million, Warner Bros. has invested
more than $18 million in a struggling YouTube network called Machinima network. Disney's billion dollar acquisition will not only help the company gain advanced technology
and business intelligence required in the entertainment business but will also help them explore together the future of entertainment industry and short-form online videos.
