State-of-the-art encryption technology used in government applications is now used to verify the transactions online gave rise to Bitcoin. Till last year it was considered as a decentralized, experimental digital currency that would enable us to do instant payments online anywhere to anyone in the world. The actual Bitcoin software was released by Satoshi Nakamoto under the MIT license. Since the inception of Bitcoin, it has seen a sharp rise in the usage and acceptability worldwide. It might not be incorrect to say that Bitcoin might be the currency of the future. Our cover story gives an account of the Rise of Bitcoin and the facts revolving around it. The cover describes a caricature of Satoshi Nakamoto whose identity still remains uncovered. Leader talk as usual includes a motivational account of business leaders who have not only earned a big name but also earn ‘big money’. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in its recent report says the renewable energy industry has created around 615,000 jobs in the United States. That’s a huge number of Americans working towards providing this nation with clean renewable energy from sun, plants and wind. Renewable energy development is making a difference in this country,

Americans are looking forward to clean energy because it offers so many of the solutions that people are looking for, bringing vitally needed employment and revenue to communities, reliability, security while also protecting clean air and clean water. In a new national poll it was found that voters chose to invest in efficiency and clean energy rather than traditional fossil fuels at the rate of almost 2-to-1. A recent poll in Kansas also found immense support for pure, renewable energy and the administration policies that furthers its growth. This would require the utilities to generate 20 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2020. Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) in their preliminary analysis says that more than 78,600 clean energy and clean transportation jobs were announced across the country in 2013. Since the last couple of years, E2 has recorded announcements that could lead to more than 186,500 jobs.

Five years ago, engineers at Icelandic Deep Drilling Project, IDDP witnessed a bizarre site while drilling a borehole in Krafla, Northeast Iceland. At 2100m they had accidently hit Earth’s magma chambers, intruding into the planet’s upper crust from below at searing temperatures of 900 to 1000 Celsius that generated super-hot vents of stems. The magma-heated steam that was discovered was capable of generating 36MW of electrical power compared to 660MW of power

generated by coal-fired power station. In a special report published this month, researchers have confirmed that molten lava could lead to a revolution in the energy efficiency of high-temperature geothermal projects in the future. Volcanic regions like Iceland in most cases are suddenly activated by movements in the Earths tens of kilometers below that fills chambers above with magma. The borehole at Krafla, IDDP-1 is one of the first in a series of wells drilled by the IDDP set in Iceland for usable geothermal resources. Normally geothermal energy is generated by pumping water in heated ground such as a hot reservoir which has natural steam at depths between 4-5 kms, the molecules hold huge amount of energy. Such heated grounds are subjected to boiling and there by using steam to generate electricity – a process very sporadic and tough. The accidental discovery over five years ago happened when a borehole was set up to deliver steam directly into the Krafla power plant due to a failed valve.

Could we implement the same on robotic and artificial agents that have binaries instead of neurons? Meet Guy Hoffman, a roboticist who believes that although we have partially understood the traditional notion of learning in humans, we have been ignorant into applying it in artificial intelligence. Co-director of the IDC Media Invention Lab, Guy Hoffman researches robots with soul. According to reports the world’s foremost crowdfunding platform for the ocean energy industry launched on 10th Feb, contrived to tackle a dearth of early-stage funding for a rapidly growing part of the renewable energy sector. Clean Reach, reportedly launching five projects, provides a new way to generate an energy source that could apparently offer almost limitless supply of power for the entire world.

Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014
One of the biggest challenges facing the renewable energy sector is access to adequate funding. Clean Reach founded by ocean energy experts Stephanie and Terry Thornton, offers new funding source for a critically significant renewable energy sector. It helps the ocean energy industry subdue key impediments, enhance access to funding, amend collaboration among project developers, attain strategic advice and establish public awareness of the industry’s formidable potential. Michael Bernitsas, professor of Naval Architecture in the University of Michigan reckons that just .1 percent of the ocean’s energy could sustain the needs of 15 billion people, or double the world population. Even though ocean energy technology has terrific potential, it is comparatively new. Continued dependence on fossil fuels is obstructing the growth of the renewable energy sector, with just around 3 percent of American venture capital devoted to the energy and utility industry in 2013.

One of the most compelling and evolved peculiarities of nature is sustainability. Nature is innocuous. It banks on diversity, fits form to function and rewards corporation. It is zero-waste, zero-energy. It curbs excesses from within. Mocking as it, nature’s own children are struggling to incorporate lessons from nature’s 3.8 billion years of innovation. Human curiosity and desire to learn from nature is engulfed by a

devouring flame that is materialistically extracting the best of nature for shallow voracious purposes. To throw more on the pile, environmental issues are politicized and capitalized by superficial bodies. And as matter-of-fact we are cognizant of the key to shrink our planet’s woes. In an era where we have the knowledge, technology and all necessities to devise a restorative way of living, we are a several lessons away from entering an age of ecology. The best of innovation and ecologically sensitive adaptation for a restorative and regenerative future lies in adopting nature as a role model. Innovators are compelled to ponder over how they will be able to achieve radical increases in resource efficiency and bring sustainability. Emulating the concept of nature’s genius in its survival – Biomimicry, is the answer in developing creative solutions to the challenges mankind faces in present world.

Often, a company’s chief executive officer becomes the focus of attention on the company for reasons sometimes not strictly related to his or her day-today job performance. Instead, shareholders and the media will focus on a chief executive officer’s pay, especially if the pay is deemed by those outside the company as being “too high.” The matter of whether or not a chief executive officer is deserving of the pay she may get is for a different discussion. Here, we want to take a look at the three highest-earning CEOs around the world and what they’re doing in order to be paid as they’re being paid. It’s worth noting that, almost without exception, every chief executive officer and his compensation is a constant topic of discussion among company board members and executive compensation committees formed by those boards.

David Simon 030
Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014
The first chief executive officer that immediately springs to mind when it comes to compensation and the level of it being given is actually a person that many outside the business world may never even have heard of; David Simon of Simon Property Group, the number one ranked and largest real estate investment trust in the United States. Simon pulls down, according to various sources, more than $1 million in salary with another $100 million or more in stock awards, which are often given to company CEOs as a way to compensate them more fully yet show a cash-based salary that looks to be more reasonable in these economically challenging times. Simon, though, has apparently been getting the job done quite well, given that the property group he helms is in fact tops in the nation and has totally integrated operations across five different real estate platforms, which is no mean feat in the kind of property challenged economic environment seen in the country and around the globe. David Simon himself is the son of the Chairman Emeritus of Simon Property Group, Melvin Simon, meaning the Group itself is somewhat of a family run affair in certain ways. Simon, however, isn’t the pure product of nepotism, given that earnings of the company - including revenue of more than $3.78 billion - have never been better. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1983 and then went on to snag an MBA from Columbia University’s prestigious Graduate School of Business in 1985. Simon, however, didn’t start working with Simon Property Group right away, instead beginning his career at First Boston and moving through increasingly more responsible positions, ending up as vice president at Wasserstein Parella & Co. before finally moving to Melvin Simon & Associates, the precursor to Simon Property Group, in 1990, as its chief financial officer. By 1993, David Simon led the Group to become a public company, overseeing its wildly successful nearly $1 billion initial public offering (IPO). Since then, Simon has been the impetus behind the strong growth of his company, and the stock reflects that: It now sells for around $145 per share, up more than 30% year-over-year.

Leslie Moonves 032
Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014
One CEO who definitely has an impact on the daily lives of millions across the country is Leslie Moonves, chief of the number one rated television network this year, CBS. Moonves is currently president and chief executive officer at the TV network and has been at various iterations of the network’s former parent company, Viacom, since 1995 in a series of positions that culminated in his elevation to CEO at the network several years ago. At present, Moonves is estimated to be earning north of $69.9 million in total compensation, with a total personal net worth of more than $300 million. Moonves is another example of a CEO apparently getting the job done, because the television network he oversees is the number one rated broadcast network in the nation and has managed to make its network platform extremely profitable in an era where television itself has become increasingly fragmented among cable, streaming and other delivery methods. Leslie Moonves also can be said to have worked in almost every aspect of television, including as a former actor, having been a cast member to one degree or another in various 70s television shows, including Cannon as well as The Six Million Dollar Man, an iconic television series that started in the early 1970s. Born in New York City, Moonves was raised in Valley Stream, New York. A 1971 graduate of Bucknell University, he originally started studies there as a sciences major but switched his major over to Spanish and began acting in several plays on campus and at local summer stock playhouses. Moonves, though, is no dilettante, and has had extensive experience in management ever since he moved over from acting to management of movie and television network production companies in the late 1970s. During his time at Warner Bros. Television, where he served as president and CEO, Moonves green lighted both Friends and ER, two of the most wildly successful television series of all time. Moonves has recently been in the news defending the way in which competitor network NBC has been covering the 2012 London Olympics, a games where a great deal of the content is often shown on a tape-delayed basis in the United States due to time differences between the US and the UK. “If you don’t want to know the results, don’t go online,” Moonves has observed when asked about the NBC decision to show already completed events as if they were live when it comes to US audiences. Moonves’ tough take no prisoners approach to television seems to be just what the once-moribund CBS needed a few years ago and under the steady hand of its CEO and president, it’s managed to pull itself up to top dog status among all television networks. David M. Zaslav 034
Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014
A third television-related chief executive officer rounds out the top three highest-earning CEOs in the world these days. David M. Zaslav, chief executive officer of Discovery Communications, one of the most well known of the cable TV networks out there, is currently pulling down total compensation exceeding $52.4 million, a nice increase of more than 23% over his last contract. Zaslav himself has held the CEO spot since January of 2007. Previously an executive over at NBC Universal, Zaslav earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton and then grabbed an honors graduate law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1985. Zaslav worked for a time as an associate at a New York City law firm before joining NBC Universal in 1989, helping to found the network’s cable business channel, CNBC shortly thereafter and then, in 1996, playing a key role in the creation of MSNBC. Zaslav also has been a prime figure in the creation of OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, though that particular entity has been struggling of late and pretty much ever since its founding in 2011. David Zaslav is certainly no rookie when it comes to network television, whether over the air or through cable or other new media technologies like streaming video and audio. Currently, Discovery Communications reaches more than 1.7 billion cumulative subscribers in more than 200 countries and territories around the world. Zaslav maintains that he’s totally focused on growth, performance and operational efficiency and those particular numbers certainly don’t lie when it comes to the impact that Discovery Television seems to have on its almost fanatically loyal viewership. Chances are good that few cable television subscribers anywhere in the world haven’t heard of one form of Discovery Television network offering, series, special or other media event, with Zaslav being one of the prime motivators behind Discovery’s concerted market penetration efforts. So, then: While the top three chief executive officers in the world today might seem, on the face of things, to be “excessively compensated” it’s obvious that - given the dominant positions of the companies that each is heading - they’re pretty much delivering value for consideration received, which is just about all that any company board of directors and executive compensation committee can ask for when it comes to the men and women they put in charge of, basically, the life of their various companies. These three CEOs head up a list of distinguished men and women in business today that certainly give hope for the proposition that one man or woman at a company really can make a big difference.

As science, technology, and history move on, our society keeps encountering new ways to approach daily life. This time, the digital era has gone beyond money itself and is starting to challenge global economics. Bitcoin-the virtual currency that is opening its way among dollars, euros, and pounds-has caught the attention of retailers, analysts, investors, and costumers. Will digital cash become the currency of the future? Let’s find it out!

Bitcoin is a digital currency and a peer-to-peer payment system launched as open source software in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin currency is best known as cryptocurrency, since it uses cryptography to manage the creation and transfer of currency. Users send payments by transmitting digital signed messages to the network. Participants, identified as miners, confirm and timestamp transactions into a shared public record named the block chain, for which they are rewarded with new bitcoins and transaction fees. Bitcoin has expanded exponentially over 2013. Even though it has been around since 2009, it did not get popularity until 2011, when it was worth $2 per con. By last year, bitcoins had jumped to $20 per coin, and then climbed to $266 last April. Later, within the last couple months, it had a further price upgrade and now is hovering around $1,000.

Bitcoin digital currency has grown in acceptance in the past months. Some analysts believe that the digital cash could become the currency of the future. According to a research report by Bank of America disclosed last month, the decentralized digital currency could be considered a major contender to other kinds of online money-transfer providers. In addition, the digital cash has also gained popularity in online marketplaces and with retailers. The gaming firm Zynga began testing Bitcoin payments for a few online games in January 2014. Also, the Sacramento Kings became the first professional sports team to accept the virtual money to process payments for tickets and team merchandise. It was unveiled on early 2014 that eBay is planning to introduce Bitcoin sales under a “virtual currency” category on its United Kingdom and United States’ sites. Furthermore, today people are able to use the virtual money to pay in a couple downtown Las Vegas casinos. The Golden Gate and the D casino have disclosed that customers are now free to use Bitcoin digital currency to stay at their hotels. D’s will take digital cash at its gift shop and restaurants as well. However, both casinos will not accept the virtual money for gambling. Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014

Even though Bitcoin promises to challenge traditional economics and finances in a positive way, there is always a dark side within the utopia. First of all, the digital currency has being linked with drug trafficking. In 2013, The Guardian stated that Bitcoin was primarily used to buy illegal drugs and for online gambling. In addition, the Huffington Post reported that there were online gambling accounts linked to a huge segment of Bitcoin activity. Furthermore, several law enforcement and regulatory authorities, like the FBI and the European Banking Authority, felt that the digital currency may be used for money laundering. For instance, in January 2014, two operators of US Bitcoin exchanges–one a vice chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation-were arrested for money laundering. Nevertheless, some experts consider that the fact that all Bitcoin transactions are public will be an obstacle for money laundry in the future. Finally, let’s talk about the legal status of the virtual cash. For now, many governments have made announcements concerning Bitcoin. The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network in the United States has established regulatory guidelines for Bitcoin and other similar digital currencies. Countries like Canada, Finland, Australia, and Germany have stated that normal earned income rules apply to the digital cash as well. Other states, like Norway, refuse to give Bitcoin the label of “currency” but still collect taxes on its transactions. Singapore, Denmark, and Poland have announced that future regulations may be imposed over the virtual currency.

As you have read, little by little the digital currency Bitcoin is finding its way into news reports, causal lexicon, laws, and even your own wallet! However, have you really understood what it is? How far can this virtual money go? Should one use it? Should one wait? As described in the company website, “Bitcoin is an innovative payment network and a new kind of money.” This answers the first question, as well as the introduction of this article. For the rest of the information, we can rely on Christopher Carfi, an expert in the topic who recently wrote the ebook ‘Conversational Bitcoin: The Bitcoin basics you need to know.” Let’s check out his opinion in the matter.

Today, thousands of merchants, such as TigerDirect, Zynga, Sacramento Kings, and Overstock.com accept Bitcoin currency and means of payment. Dozens of new companies join the club every day. The list of users keeps growing every second. Therefore, the Bitcoin payment network is now distributed globally and is highly resistant to hacking and similar virtual threats.
Bitcoin was not created by any company or government. It was conceived as an “open source” technology, which means that anyone can scrutinize the network’s code for vulnerabilities or flaws, and anyone can also recommend upgrades and improvements to the infrastructure. Furthermore, anyone can send bitcoins directly to anyone else. It is like an email or Skype account which is able to transmit funds across the world almost instantaneously. All these for a fraction of what traditional payment providers or banks charge

One year ago, at the beginning of 2013, the cost to buy one Bitcoin exchange was around $13. In less than 12 months, by December, the price had gone to over $1,200, ending the year in an average of $900. Price fluctuations of 20 percent or more in the course of one single day are not uncommon in this currency. Speculators can do very well in this market; however, it still is a flip of a coin deal. It is worth mentioning that the extreme volatility of the coins raises questions about Bitcoin’s ability to function as an official currency. The Bitcoin Foundation claims that this scheme is due to insufficient liquidity and that volatility will lessen as the virtual currency’s popularity increases.
During 2013, the virtual currency startups were on the radar for venture capitalists. The most remarkable investment was the December investment of $25 million in Coinbase made by Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm.

Even though much of the speculative aspects of Bitcoin grabbed headlines in 2013, the most amusing aspects of the digital cash are yet to come. In 2014, the Bitcoin network is expected to parallel in some ways the state of Internet itself around 1994. It is filled with the same hopes and promises. This is reflected in the new generation of entrepreneurs that is currently working on developing companies and capabilities based on this platform. This kind of technology will play out over the years to come. Nevertheless, the virtual currency is not for everyone yet. The controversy keeps growing; while some believe that Bitcoin will eventually become the currency of the future, others claim that it is a Ponzi scheme or even worse. Carfi explained that Bitcoin might redefine several aspects of the international economic activity; but others obviously risk being brought down by their own hype. Concerning fields such as government financial infrastructures worldwide and how Bitcoin will fit in with these systems or even redefine them, Carfi explained that certain countries like Iceland or Thailand have been historically hostile toward the digital currency. However, the Unites States has taken a more balanced and insightful approach. For Americans, one of the major interests and concerns is how Bitcoin activities will be taxed. For now, the IRS has not given any formal regulation in this area, even though renowned sites like Forbes and representatives from the H&R block Tax Institute have offered their speculation.

Flowers are a basic spice in all relationships. Either to commemorate an important occasion, such as a birthday or anniversary, or to brighten up an ordinary day, flowers are always a fresh, natural, and classic gift. Although the typical choice is red roses, there is a variety of usual and exotic plants that are available as well. Carnations, germinis, tulips, lilies, lisianthuses, among other species are good alternatives, especially when they feature bright and romantic pink colors. Nevertheless, which is the best and most expensive exotic flower you can possibly find? Still guessing? It is an orchid! Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014

Your sweetheart would certainly go crazy for a Gold of Kinabalu orchid. This flower is endangered, unique, and only grows in a remote protected region of Malaysian national park. You would need to book the next flight there and do some research before getting the precious plant for your darling. Sounds like an adventure itself, right?! Though your natural gift would not reach its full effect until it blooms two months later, on April, your round trip would still be financially worth it since the rare orchid can be purchased for approximately $5,000 per stem Furthermore, don’t forget to checkthe legal regulations for transporting your precious gift; it would definitely be a bad idea to end up in Malaysian prison. However, if you do not feel like risking your integrity, there is always the option of trying some fake blooms. But, be careful, fake does not equal cheap, for this false special bouquet may be the most expensive in the world! Known for being presented as a wedding gift from a Saudi businessman, the bouquet is made out of origami flowers made of currency notes. Built with gracefully folded bills of 50, 100 and 500 Saudi riyals, this art craft is worth roughly $266,000. Well, at least you won’tever need to water it! Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014

Greeting cards are considered the lamest gift: a folded piece of paper bearing a salutation or message as original as a limp handshake. An already printed “Happy Valentine’s Day to someone truly special” most of the times implies exactly the opposite. Therefore, it is always better to take some time, get inspired, and do one yourself. At the end, even a blank card with a message scribbled insideis more personal than a purchased one. However, if you don’t have enough time or creativity to make the perfect greeting card, you can invest your savings in the expensive and prestigious Gilded Age Greetings luxurious store. There will be no question you did not just go to the drugstore to pick a quick card on the way home. Gilded Age Greetings will craft your couture Valentine’s card by hand, which will definitely add that extra personal touch for your loved one. Each custom masterpiece is finished with the finest materials, which include 23k gold as well as precious and semi precious stones. The most expensive card is worth $3,950 in the collection, with some Valentine’s greetings offered for just $2,250 price tag! The luxurious written message will arrive tassel-bound in an exquisite silk box and, to prevent any stain or damage while handling, the package comes with gloves for presentation. Let’s just face it; perfume and cologne have become Valentine’s Day staples. It is so easy to go and get it, especially when you have already the name of the fragrance. Despite from the nice seasonal presentations that perfume companies use to present their products, there is no excitement at all. It is just like buying shampoo or body lotion! Therefore, forget Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren, Dolce Gahanna, Carolina Herrera, even Britney Spears. Just for a change, try getting the Imperial Majesty perfume by Clive Christian. At an asking price of $215,000, you will be getting a truly unique scent for your sweetheart, since just a handful of Imperial Majesty bottles were created as part of a quite limited edition. Each perfume bottle is handmade with Bacarrat crystal and features diamond encrustations-not a shampoo bottle at all! You should not be surprised to know that this one of a kind fragrance was given the “world’s most expensive perfume” title from the “Guinness Book of World Records”. However, if you do not have time to hunt down one of the only 10 Imperial Majesty bottles across the world-we did say that it was a limited edition, right?-you can at least settle for a more accessible option: “No. 1” perfume for women. This Clive Christian creation, which includes notes of pineapple and plum, is presented in a gold-crowned 1.6-ownce bottle worth $865. Keep in mind that one of the select retailers references a high demand for this fragrance and there is a purchase limit of six per month. Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014

Unless they are allergic to them, people love chocolates. Despite the type of chocolate, milk or dark, a nice box of these delicacies is always appreciated by both men and women. In this season it is quite easy to get the heart shaped box with a nice red ribbon, they blossom like daisies in spring. A safe and not very original play! Therefore, if you are going to go for the endorphin aphrodisiac dessert, go beyond Hershey’s and try getting a chocolate that is one of its kind: a chocolate from Connecticut Chocolatier Knipschildt. La Madeine au Truffe, a chocolate that appears to have been brought back from Mar’s surface, is considered the most expensive chocolate in the planet. Priced at $250 for only 1.9 ounces, La Madeline is no more than a rare French Perigord (mushroom) truffle ensconced in a ganache made from vanilla, truffle oil, heavy cream and Valrhona dark chocolate, before being dunked in more dark chocolate and tasty of cocoa powder. Is your mouth watering now? Do not waste a minute, go and withdraw $2,100 from the ATM and get a pound of this delicacy! Just remember that these chocolates are made to order and will be presented “lying on a bed of sugar pearls”. Sounds like a good plan? Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014

Previously known as Radisson SAS, Radisson Blu hotels are mainly found outside the United States, in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). These properties are operated by Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group and have their roots in the branding merger of SAS International Hotels (SIH) with Radisson brand in 1994, which resulted in the creation of Radisson SAS. The success of the new Hotel Group was outstanding and by 2000 it opened its hundredth hotel. By 2002, more than 150 properties were operated by Radisson SAS in more than 40 countries throughout EMEA. In 2009, after the withdrawal of Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), the major shareholder in Rezidor Hotel Group, the name Radisson SAS was changed to Radisson Blu. Rezidor’s Executive Vice President of Brands Gordon Mckinnon explained that the name was the product of Rezidor’s research to find a fresh visual differentiator that replaced the familiar SAS ‘blue box.’ “The name Blu started life as the project’s working title. But it soon became apparent that it was actually the most natural of choices. It’s simple, it’s short, it’s relevant and we have applied it in a way that adds certain modernity to the identity without taking it too far,” he said. “Most importantly, it also promotes our specific brand heritage by preserving the graphic ‘blue box’ which has become the recognized symbol of the distinctive characteristics of the Radisson brand in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Radisson Blu preserves the continuity of our unique brand, while taking it that one essential step forward to more accurately represent its true position and future ambitions.”

Jim Beam Bourbon Whiskey 096
Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014
Throughout time, many people appear to have made a special personal connection with the history and tradition behind Jim Beam, one of the most famous bourbon whiskeys produced in Clermont, Kentucky. Pride of place, history, and the feeling of belonging have become essential ingredients in the formula of the consumer’s drinking experience, just as the corn, barley, and rye that go into every single whiskey bottle. Therefore, the news that Beam’s parent company has decided to sell itself to Suntory Holdings Limited, a Japanese distilling and brewing Multinational Corporation, has raised public concerns. Quite a few whiskey drinkers wondered whether Jim Beam would lose its American identity under the ownership of a foreign conglomerate. However, how harmful to bourbon’s reputation could the deal really be? Let’s just look at the facts. Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014
097
Despite its folksy background, bourbon-a type of American whiskey made primarily from corn whose name derives from the French Bourbon dynasty-has been successful in business for almost two hundred years, and the phenomenon of corporate consolidation attached to “foreign” ownership has been present in its history almost since the beginning. Jim Beam bourbon is no exception to the rule. Back in the late 18th century, settlers arrived in Kentucky and establisheda tradition of making an oak-aged whiskey made out of the corn excess from the family farms. The family-owned corporation that began producing “Old Jake Beam” whiskey in 1975-which was renamed to “Jim Beam” in 1933-managed to carry on the whirlwind of distillery closings and consolidations that characterized the industrial revolution and the Gilded Age. However, when the selling prohibition hit the market, the Beams were unable to go on in the spirit business for they were not able to acquire a medicinal-license in order to help themselves through such permit’slaw loophole. The family tried its best at a variety of unsuccessful business ventures and by the time Prohibition was revoked in 1933, Jim Beam was bankrupt. They, as a number of bourbon distillers, were unable to invest in more whiskey and had no stock left to sell. 098

This was the time when the first corporate consolidation took place in the history of Jim Beam. They struck a deal with three Chicago investors who would take over ownership of the company while the Beams would continue to run the distillery. During the 1930s, many Kentucky’s bourbon-producing regions made similar deals, in which ownership would be handed over to corporations “foreign” to the county, while the hereditary bourbon families carried on as master distillers-a tradition that lives to the present.

Keeping in mind the last historical fact, the recent Japanese business proposal for Beam Inc. is not far from reality or bourbon’s records. The agreement to a $13.6 billion cash takeover by Suntory Holdings Limited represents the first big corporate acquisition of 2014 and is also a sign of the growing popularity of whiskey, particularly of bourbon, both overseas and domestically. Also, the deal gives us a historical contrast, where the $13.6 billion cash the Asiatic giant will pay is a far cry from the $15,000 invested by the Chicago entrepreneurs for Beam’s original incorporation during the last century; nevertheless, the deal structure remains the same: profit-sharing and ownership from outside in exchange for local expertise and family involvement. While the acquisition will help Suntory expand its global growth, according to Suntory President and Chairman NobutadaSaji; the purchased firm will continue to be run by Beam President and CEO Matt Shattock and the Deerfield, Illinoiscompany’s current management. Both firms’ boards approved unanimously the deal, which is intended to close in the second quarter. 102

The purchase of Beam by Suntory is considered to be the third largest acquisition of an overseas business by a Japanese conglomerate. The only two larger deals in this category were SoftBank’s acquisition of US Sprint Nextel and Japan Tobacco’s purchase of Britain’s Gallaher, the company behind Benson & Hedges cigarettes. The dealgives the Asiatic investor not only the ownership of Jim Beam products but also of brands such as Ardmore, Teacher’s and Laphroaig Scotch, Maker’s Mark bourbons, Sauza tequila, and Courvoisier cognac. In addition, Beam owns Old Grand-Dad, Baker’s, Old Crow, Booker’s, Basil Hayden’s, Knob Creek bourbons, Starbucks-branded liqueurs, and several Irish whisky brands. The Beam-Suntory mergerrepresents the largest deal that the Asiatic firm has ever made, which will elevate it to the third largest maker of distilled drinks worldwide. The annual sales of the merged company are expected to be above $4.3 billion. According to analysts, this would give the Suntory 11 percent of the spirits market share in the United States, significantly up from less than 1 percent. Going deeper intofigures, the Japanese firm will pay $83.50 per share, a 25 percent premium to Beam’s closing price of $66.97 on the Friday, January 10, previous to the announcement. The total cash-and-debt value of the contract is $16 billion. Suntory plans to finance the deal with available cash and fully committed funding from the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ. All in all, this merger will put another American beverage and spirit firm into foreign hands. Of the 10 most famous and largest international spirits firms, just Kentucky’s Brown-Forman Corp, which possesses Southern Comfort and Jack Daniel’s, will continue to be headquartered in the United States. 104

Suntory Holdings Limited is a Japanese distilling and brewing company group headquartered in Dojimahama 2-chome, Kitaku, Osaka. It was first established in 1899 and is one of the oldest firms focused in the distribution of alcoholic beverages in Japan. The Asiatic corporation makes both award-winning and best-selling Japanese whisky, including Yamazaki, Hibiki, and Hakushu whiskies. Also, it owns Midori liqueur and BrowmoreScotch whisky. In addition to the spirits business, Suntory has expanded to other fields which have allowed it to offer a great variety of products which go from soft drinks to sandwiches. For instance, in recent years, the Asiatic corporation bought French beverage maker Orangina Schweppes Group, as well as Ribena drinks and GlaxoSmith Kline’s Lucozade.

According to statistics, the traditional American drink has become successful in the last decade. The Distilled Spirits Council informed that the sales volume for bourbon or Tennessee whiskeys, like Jack Daniel’s, have increased by 26 percent over the last 10 years in the United States. In addition, exports of American whiskeys have doubled from last decade’s numbers to about $1 billion in 2013. For instance, since demand was so robust last year, Beam even considered decreasing alcohol content for Marker’s Mark in order to cater the shortage. “We’re basically in the middle of a global whiskey renaissance,” said Frank Coleman, a spokesman for the Distilled Spirits Council. Beam holds some of the most popular spirits brands in Pennsylvania and is the state’s third most popular whiskey trademark, just behind Seagram’s and Jack Daniel’s. The liquor Control Board informed that the firm sold 1.15 million units during the last fiscal year and that it is one of the top 20 spirits and wines brands overall. In addition, Jim Beam is the top-selling bourbon in the state and Marker’s Mark is among the top 100 brands, which had a sales increase of about 12 percent during 2013.On the whole, Pennsylvanians paid more than $20 million last fiscal year on Maker’s Mark and Jim Beam bourbons.

Now that the American firm will become part of the Japanese distilling conglomerate, consumers have reflected a generalized concern respecting the impact of the foreign firm in the quality of the spirits and production processes. Therefore, a Beam spokesman guaranteed that there would not be modifications on the ground in Kentucky and the transition concerns just business. Jim Beam won’t be moving its distilleries to Japan, neither messing with the formulas of its famous products; however, the spell of its homemade national mythology has being distorted. Bourbon seemed like a powerful symbol of the freedom and pride of American identity. Today that ideal is merely a comforting fiction. The truth in this story lays in mergers and holding firms, in pure business and transnational distribution rights. The real fairy tale of the modern whiskey industry is just another version of the American true core. The country’s “native spirit”, as bourbon is usually called, is just another metaphor of the capitalization and consolidation which assembles the spine that holds together not just the United States culture buttheglobalized world’s economy.

Beijing 112

If your next target for a business trip is People’s Republic of China, Beijing is certainly a city to pay a visit. Being the country’s capital and one of the most populated cites in the globe-with about 20,693,000 people as of 2012-Beijing is the second largest Chinese city after Shanghai. Its name means “Northern Capital”, quite literally considering its geographic location. While Hong Kong (SAR) has the nightlife and is the financial hub of China, and Shanghai is known for the fashion and art trends, Beijing stands out as a dynamic destination for its cultural, political, and educational aspects. With centuries of story behind it and plenty of remarkable sights close by-such as the Great Wall of China or the Forbidden City-Beijing could undoubtedly feature on your top traveling business destinations in the near future. In contrast to European or other Asian countries, Beijing can generate a strong cultural shock for foreigner business travelers. The city goes beyond the regular standards: starting from the language-which is basically indecipherable to most English Foreign speakers-to the obviously smoggy atmosphere and the never ending crowds. Therefore, if you want to cash in on the growing business opportunities that the capital has to offer, you will also need to love its rich-and perhaps unfamiliar-culture. Depending on where your plane takes off, the Chinese metropolis can be between 12 to 15 hours ahead of the United States. A good trick to easily get adjusted to the new time zone is to set your watch to Beijing’s time as soon as you board the plane. Avoid drinking alcohol and stay hydrated by only drinking plenty of water. Several frequent international fliers rely on melatonin to sleep while being up in the air. However, once you get to Beijing, it is essential that you keep yourself awake, especially if you arrive during the day. Try taking a short walk after checking-in. It is likely that you will wake up early next morning, so, if this happens, use the early hours of the day to your advantage. Try going early to Jing Shan Park, behind the Forbidden City, and enjoy the calm environment while locals do their morning exercises. The park’s birds’ eye view of Beijing is not to be missed! Believe it or not, before planning any business dinner in Beijing it is of great importance that you mind your manners. In words of Ann Mah, author of Kitchen Chinese, “Chinese culture depends a lot on something called ‘Face.’ It’s a really complex idea that depends on giving someone face or losing ‘Face.’” Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you take your business partners or associates to a place that will make them feel like you are showing them respect. A good choice is a restaurant that features private rooms that you can reserve for yourself and your guests. If you do not speak Mandarin (official language of PRC), be sure that the restaurant has an English menu or pictures of the food on them. Why? Let’s just say that you will not only order your own food, you will be expected to order for your guests as well. Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014

Arrive a bit earlier than the rest of the group and select the menu. Try to start out with some cold dishes like raw vegetables or pressed tofu. For the main course, order seafood or meat. “Seafood is considered very expensive, so to treat someone, you should order shrimp or fish, Mah suggests. In addition, according to the writer, remember not to order rice, noodles, or dumpling too soon, for these things are considered filler food and should be offered after the more expensive dishes have been served. As for the table manners, you will find one napkin on the table folded differently than the rest. That is the seat of the host and you should automatically go to that place if you are hosting the dinner. Continually, fill your guests’ plates and glasses. If someone hands you a business card, do not forget to take it with both hands and look at it thoroughly. Just putting it right in your pocket is considered disrespectful. There will come a moment in which the language barrier, the back-to-back meetings, and the jetlag will get you. Do not worry, for Beijing is well prepared for all the overwhelmed business travelers who want to experience something more than a quiet time in their hotel room. The chief of all is the obvious alternative for a stressed traveler: a massage. The Chinese capital can get you one at a fraction of what it might cost you back in the United States or other Western countries. Bodhi or Dragonfly Massage Centers are recommended for their high-quality and low-cost massages starting merely at and hourly rate of $22. Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014

Another good choice to relax is to simply stroll around. You can have a peaceful time walking around the acclaimed 298 Space in the Dashanzi Art District. There you will not only find a great variety of galleries to explore but also the Timezone 8 book store and eatery, which offers American tourists a taste of home, thanks to its Texan owner Robert Bernell. Furthermore, another neighborhood you can pay a visit to free your mind is HouHai. There you will find a manmade lake in the middle, which dates back to the 19th century. The entire area is surrounded by inviting narrow alleys all dating back to the Mongol times. Finally, the last alternative to get away from anxiety and tension in the big Asiatic city is simply grabbing a drink! For that, the famous drinking zone, the Sanlitun, has plenty of options; though the main strip of neon-lit bars is a tourist trap full of overpriced drinks. Q Bar, a rooftop bar inside the Eastern Inn Hotel, is among the top spots here and has an outstanding view of the city. You can also try checking out the side roads. You will find places like the Union Bar & Grille, Xiu Bar, and LAN Club. It is good to keep in mind that business in China is usually carried out over meals and that you will be expected to have some drinks with your hosts. Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014

Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014
Paying a visit to Beijing should include some interesting and enriching sightseeing. The Chinese capital has become unrecognizable from what it was twenty years ago. Now it is a world city; thanks to the foreign investment, economic development, and the impact of 2008 Summer Olympics. Before leaving the big metropolis do not hesitate to spend a day in and around Tiananmen Square, which is the nerve center of Communist China. The remarkable square is surrounded by museums, which include Beijing Working People’s Cultural Palace and Mao’s Mausoleum—lines can get quite long. Follow the multitude to the north side of the square, walk through the tunnel and get in line to discover the Forbidden City. There, a vast complex of palaces, storehouses, temples, barracks, and idyllic parks and gardens wait for you to discover them. You can also visit the offices that housed the imperial government of China for centuries and the emperor’s former living quarters. It is possible to see the place in a couple of hours; however, try to spend a full day to see as much as possible. Industry Leaders Magazine | February 2014

Another interesting place to explore is District 798, a former factory complex that now holds galleries, shops, studios, cafes, and a small contemporary arts museum. One cannot miss the visit to the Great Wall of China. With sections of it dating back over 15 centuries, the Chinese government has restored parts of the wall to resemble the architecture look of the 14th century. Thanks to its closeness to the city (about 40 miles), the Badaling section is among the most visited areas. Also, if you prefer to go a little bit further, the Mutiyanyu section is known for its picture-perfect views and slightly less touristy atmosphere. The last stop you should make is in the Silk Street Market, where you will find over 1,600 stalls. You can bargain your way through the market that holds products from toys and home furnishings, to clothes and electronics. An extra suitcase for souvenirs is always welcomed!
