Standard Chartered exits global equities business, to axe 4,000 retail bank jobs

Standard Chartered is closing its global cash equities business and is also axing around 4,000 jobs worldwide at its retail banking division in an abrupt move that underscores the bank’s efforts to achieve the cost cuts. The division had struggled to make profit since the bank re-entered the segment in 2010. The London-based company has been struggling with increasing bad loans after a decade of record profits came to an end in 2013. The bank will dismantle its institutional cash equities, stock broking, equity research business, and equity listing desks worldwide. The move will lead to 200 layoffs in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, India and Singapore, part of the 4,000 job cuts, half of which were done in the last three months of 2014, with the remainder expected during 2015, the bank said According to the bank statement, the exit from the equities business should deliver about $100 million in savings in 2016. Last year, Standard Chartered said it would aim for more than $400 million in cost cuts as it seeks to reverse a plunge in its profit growth that has put pressure on Chief Executive Peter Sands. The cost cuts in the retail banking sector will generate cost savings of around $200 million in 2015, half of the total savings determined by Sands as crucial to turn the bank around.

Schlumberger to cut 9,000 jobs due to crude oil collapse

World’s No.1 oilfield services provider, Schlumberger Ltd said it will cut 9,000 jobs because the collapse in oil prices have forced petroleum companies to cut drilling budgets. “In response to lower commodity pricing and anticipated lower exploration and production spending in 2015, Schlumberger decided to reduce its overall headcount to better align with anticipated activity levels for 2015,” the company said. Schlumberger had announced in December 2013 that it would take charges amounting to US$1.77 billion (RM6.31 billion) in the fourth quarter. These include a $296 million charge for the 9,000 job cuts, a $590 million impairment charges related to its seismic business due to a restructuring compelled by lower prices, $472 million Venezuela currency devaluation and a $199 million write-down of oilfield assets in Texas whose value has fallen due to lower oil prices. The company revealed the job cuts owing to sharply lower fourth-quarter earnings in the wake of a more than 50 per cent fall in oil prices since June. The job cuts account for nearly 8% of Schlumberger’s 120,000 global workforce. Schlumberger, which also provides drilling technology and equipment, reported a fourth-quarter profit that beat Wall Street estimates for the tenth straight quarter. Revenue increased 6 per cent to US$12.64 billion, mainly helped by an 18.5 per cent jump in revenue from North America. New Japanese hotel will be operated almost entirely by robots

Japan is set to open a hotel that claims it will eventually be staffed almost entirely by humanoid robots. The Hen-na Hotel is scheduled to open inside the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Sasebo, Nagasaki in Japan. The two-story hotel Henn-na, which means Strange Hotel in English, will operate under the motto “A commitment for evolution.” The Hen-na Hotel will initially feature three actroids, or robots that are designed in the human likeness to work as receptionists and have engaging conversations with human guests. Four porter robots will be on hand to help guests’ carry luggage to their rooms. Actroids will also clean the hotel, staff the cloakroom and also serve food in the restaurant. The actroids were developed by Osaka University and manufactured by the Japanese robotics company Kokoro, with the first version releasing in 2003. Most actroid robots bear the features and mannerisms of a young Japanese woman. The robots will be able to speak Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English, make hand gestures and determine a customer’s mood on the basis of their facial expressions. According to the company, the features will help make Henn-na the most futuristic low-cost hotel in the industry which includes facial-recognition technology for accessing guestroom doors. The amenities offered in rooms will be kept minimal and guests can request items via tablet when needed. Instead of using airconditioning, a radiation panel will detect body heat in rooms and change the room temperature. The hotel will also use solar power and other energy-saving features to reduce operating costs. The park plans on opening the first phase of Henna-na on July 17 with 72 rooms followed by another 72 rooms in the second phase, which will be completed in 2016.

Procter & Gamble to sell 100 of their least profitable brands

Cincinnati-based consumer products major Procter & Gamble recently announced that they are planning to sell off majority of a 100 brands by summer for a consolidation in various segments they operate in. The company made the announcement during the Consumer Analyst Group of New York annual conference in Boca Rato. Chief Financial Officer Jon Moeller said that the company’s decision would account for a decrease in annual sales by 14 percent (nearly $11.5 billion) which is more than its original estimate of 10 percent. He also gave information about the effect of the brand consolidation strategy on sales and profits of the company. The latest move is the largest ever consolidation announced by the company. P&G will exit certain segments and could as well spin off some of the segments by July 2016. P&G had already sold Duracell and Iams, MDVIP concierge physician service and Avril Lavinge fragrance license among others. Other brands it plans to sell include Wella, Braun, Camay soap and Scope. Duracell batteries, which makes up $2.6 billion in annual sales is the company’s largest sell-off. Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway firm will be acquiring that brand. After the latest move, P&G will be managing nearly 65 brands in 10 categories. Most brands will be market leaders in their segment, or will be among the key performers for P&G. In 2014, Procter & Gamble reported $83 billion in sales and registered $11.6 billion in net profit.

Apple to invest €1.7 billion in two green data centers in Europe

US tech giant Apple announced a €1.7 billion plan to establish and operate two data centres, powered entirely by renewable energy. The facilities will be located at County Galway of Ireland and another one at Central Jutland in Denmark. The US based consumer technology group said the centers are particularly meant for supplying power for the online services such as iTunes Store, App Store, iMessage, Maps and Siri for customers across Europe. In Europe, Apple supports nearly 672,000 jobs in which 530,000 jobs are directly related to the development of iOS apps. After the App Store debuted in 2008, developers in Europe have earned more than €6.6 billion through the worldwide sale of apps and in-app purchases. Similar to other Apple data centres, the new centers will operate entirely on clean, renewable energy sources. The tech giant will also consolidate with local partners to build additional renewable energy projects from wind or other sources to provide power in the future. Both the data centres will cover around 166,000 square metres each and are expected to go online in 2017. For the project in Ireland, Apple will use the land that was earlier used for growing and harvesting non-native trees and restore native trees to Derrydonnell Forest. The project will also provide local schools, outdoor education space as well as a walking trail for the community. In Denmark, Apple will quell the need for additional generators by basing the data centre adjacent to one of Denmark’s largest electrical substations.

Britain’s electronic spying agency, along with the U.S. National Security Agency reportedly hacked into the computer networks of a Dutch company to steal encryption keys used to protect the privacy of cellphone communications to spy on mobile phones worldwide, according to new documents provided by the former NSA systems administrator Edward Snowden. The news comes in the form of a new report from The Intercept. The documents were provided to the website by whistleblower Edward Snowden. UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the NSA apparently permitted the agencies to monitor a large portion of data mobile and voice communications around the world without valid permission from governments and telecom companies, according to the report. Gemalto officials told the website they had no idea their networks had been allegedly hacked by the US and UK spy agencies. Even The Intercept provided no evidence of any monitoring against U.S. customers of those providers. Experts say

Previously, former agency officials have defended using spying techniques to further surveillance capabilities, saying the U.S. needs to snoop on terrorists and U.S. nemesis who makes contact on the same networks as everybody else. According to The Intercept, UK’s government’s hackers targeted Gemalto engineers around the world much as the U.S. often condemns Chinese government hackers of attacking the western companies, stealing documentations that brought hackers into the company’s networks. In June 2010, UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) intercepted almost 300,000 keys for mobile phone users in Somalia. During the same time, GCHQ successfully intercepted keys used by wireless network providers in Afghanistan, Yemen, India, Iran, Serbia, Iceland and Tajikistan, according to the documents given to The Intercept.

Cities of Tomorrow According to the National Resources Defense Council, between now and the year 2050, urban development will keep on climbing: 89 million homes and 190 billion square feet of retail and other nonresidential space that will be built in the U.S. alone. Cities will need to be taller and denser. Building city of tomorrow or smart city is the best way to accommodate a populace of more than 9 billion worldwide. With more than 70 percent of world population living in urban areas by 2050, it’s going to be an awful proposition: minimal green space for the ever increasing urban sprawl. The concept of building a city of tomorrow significantly affects how and where we live and interact with our surroundings.

SONGDO, SOUTH KOREA The term “smart city is not a new concept to us. Songdo also known as Ubiquitous city or U-city in South Korea is the poster boy of what a smart city looks like. It was built from scratch in 2005 with more than $40 billion poured as investment into its creation. It finally opened in 2009, astounding hundreds of architects around the world. Songdo has sensors planted all through the city to monitor everything, from temperature to traffic patterns to help alert the inhabitants of what their day is going to be like, to escalators that move only when someone is one them. More like an internet of things concept? Yes! Instead of having garbage trucks collect waste, trash is automatically sucked out of each house into a local system and then it is further used to make compost. Schools, homes are equipped and connected with telepresence, which allows inhabitants to control heating systems as well as locks. Telepresence also offers video conferences, a much more tech-savvy way of delivering government services, health care and education. Buildings are designed to be eco-friendly and sustainable. The smart city itself is designed around open spaces. The digital mastermind behind the U-City is Cisco, which is supplying all networkbased technologies for its infrastructure. The city of the future is due for completion in 2016, and will soon be home to 65,000 inhabitants, in addition to 300,000 workers. Songdo is a brilliant example of what a city of the future could look like, and is perhaps on the very cutting edge of this revolution. But, what makes a city of tomorrow? How do we build a one? And how will it affect the inhabitants and the businesses?

A VERTICAL CITY FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING Smart cites leverage new technologies, infrastructure, planning techniques and design to create of what can be best described as a city that acts as a living breathing organism that can communicate with its inhabitants and within itself. Architects Kenneth King and Kellogg Wong have sketched out the concept of “vertical city in their latest book that is even denser than the fictional city of Gotham. It has shown a ton of skyscrapers, in addition to parks, schools, hospitals and restaurants at upper levels. Basically, it’s a complete ecosystem up in the skies. Here is how King and Wong characterize the innovative idea: High-capacity, high-efficiency ultra-tall structures will occupy a minimal car-free, pedestrianfriendly land. The vertical city will have self-sustaining infrastructure, buildings, and all the services necessary for improving living, working, sports, cultural, recreation, and leisure aspects of life for the inhabitants. The vertical city is riven into multiple levels. Close to the base is a raised multilevel podium reserved solely for pedestrians and bikes. Below, cars are consigned to circulation and parking. Above, is a first level that contains utilities and necessary infrastructure like water, sewer, and power storage plants. Further up, comes the street level with entrances to all the buildings. Further up are the sky lobbies with supporting/extension connection that would encompass town centers for shopping, socializing, exercise and drinking. The building is comprised of multiple towers each as high as one mile. The surrounding space is meant for farmland, which produces food, and also acts as a cradle between future vertical cities and the existing urban centers. The tall towers generate their own energy using renewable sources, and even future materials like grapheme and bioconcrete, in addition to mechanical innovations like rope-less elevators that can go to astounding heights.

MASDAR, ABU DHABI Masdar, is a city in the heart of the desert of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. It has been envisaged to be one of the most sustainable city on the planet Earth. It has solar power stations and wind farms providing energy and aims to be a carbon free city. Not many know this, but it is also a hub for clean-tech companies. Everything in the multi-billion dollar city of Masdar, from its water to waste is measured and monitored, becoming the ultimate source of data. It has pedestrianfriendly and car free streets. Masdar is also experimenting with a network of electric driverless podcars. It will have personal rapid transit that will run 6m under street level across the city. Norman Foster’s firm of architects has designed the buildings in Masdar. It will eventually be home to 40,000 people, with more than 50,000 commuting daily. In Japan, the construction industry is using new technology like drones into building the infrastructure of the future. Leading the change is Smart Construction. Worldwide, new cities like Sangdo, Masdar and the one proposed by King and Wong are being built, while those that we have lived in are being upgraded for tomorrow. For some, a smart city is all about data and analytics used for easing traffic congestion, or providing inhabitants better, improved information. While for some, it is all about creating a greener, efficient city.

SMART LIVING-CONNECTED LIVING DIY sensors, smartphones and apps are tools that can help us solve our city problems and create cities of tomorrow. A new DIY sensor and app called Don’t Flush me can single-handedly solve New York City’s water issues. Every time there’s heavy rain, raw sewage is sucked into the harbor at a rate of about 27 billion gallons annually. Don’t Flush me, which using an Arduino processor can measure water levels in the sewer that overflows and notify in the smartphone app, when it is safe to flush. Egg, a sensor network can alert people on problems that are often latent to our eyes. According to an estimate, two million people die annually due to air pollution. With cities getting even denser, the problem is more likely to get worse. Egg compiles data on the air quality, sending readings to people on green gases, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. Such data can help cities control pollution levels, which is just a start. With the advent of internet of things, it is even more likely to create sustainablesmart living for the inhabitants. Today, firms like IBM, Intel, Microsoft and Cisco view smart cities or city of the future as gold that not only empower technology firms, but also its inhabitants, allowing them a say in how the city will look, solving a range of problems, right from traffic congestion to air pollution. Siemens is using drones to conduct surveys work in one of the largest urban development projects in Europe. Data collected from the drones will help identify which buildings can be built to be made more sustainable. In Stockholm, California and Singapore, IBM is accumulating traffic data and using it via algorithms to predict where traffic jam will occur in the next hour. In Rio, NASA style control rooms have been built where data is sucked up from sensors and cameras put all over the city. IBM is currently working on developing 2,500 smarter cities projects and has even trademarked the term “smarter cities”. It’s nice to see that tech giants are using a more corporate-led approach to city management and solving our problems creating efficient, cities of the future. Industry Leaders Magazine [march 2015]

Posthumous Display of Art Mazzoleni London is featuring the abstract art and creations made by the late Milanese artist Agostino Bonalumi, to cater to the rising interests among international collectors and museum goers. Postwar Italian art is becoming so cult among museum lovers these days that it could be consider utterly glorious to be indulged in the rare examples of Bonalumi’s work. His creations marked the setting of the ultimate trend in Italian Art, with some of them pedestaled at the Peggy Guggenheim collection in Venice and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. What is so special about Bonalumi’s sculptures and paintings? Bonalumi, with the help of a process he called “estroflessione” (extroflection), fitted dynamically shaped objects to the rear of his paintings to give them the threedimensional look. He used various angles, light reflection techniques and studied shadows to produce such rare sculptural pieces.

Bonalumi’s use of extroflection finds an almost moving impression of the Grigio (1996) sculpture, which is made purely out of an acrylic canvas. Other arts include Blu (1993) and Rosso (1968) and his bronze inspired series, Bronzo (1967-2006 and 1969-2007).

The Future

of Clean Energy Let’s assume that human civilization will live for another 1000 years, then we will inevitably land at a 100 percent renewable energy framework. Whatever you accept about the existing reserves on the planet and undiscovered sources of fossil fuels and other flammable or radioactive minerals, they will in the long run be depleted or excessively costly to extract. Policymakers regularly go about as though we had that sort of time. Tragically, we don’t. As the field of science unmistakably shows, CO2 and other greenhouses gas (GHG) emissions must crest and start to decrease in under a decade if we are to meet the target of staying underneath 2°C of worldwide mean temperature climb, the target to which the 192 member administrations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have submitted themselves.

As the new Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report on climate change released recently unmistakably shows, much else besides 2°C, and human civilization as we know it (also whatever is left of the biosphere) is in a bad position. In this way, the question regarding a 100 percent renewable energy future gets to be not “if?” yet “how?” and in particular, ‘how fast would we be able to do it?’ and ‘what amount of will it cost?’ It doesn’t cost the world to save planet Earth, said IPCC Working Group III co-seat Ottmar Edenhofer when uncovering the mitigation portion of the IPCC Report in Berlin in April. Meeting stringent atmosphere focuses on the premise of what we know now will cost some place in the region of .06 percent of yearly GDP development for whatever is left of the century and that is not including the lives that will be spared or a great part of the atmosphere harm evaded; nor does it consider the sensational diminishing in wind and sun based costs in the last 2-3 years. Be that as it may most likely renewables can’t do it all alone? While you will discover no deficiency of experts who will say that renewables can’t completely control our energy framework, you see valuable little examination to back these statements. One by and large hears something like, what do you do when the sun doesn’t sparkle or the wind doesn’t blow? And after that on to tout their most loved innovation, whether it be atomic, ‘clean coal,’ carbon capture and storage (CCS) or some other variety on the energy system that has gotten us into this chaos in any case.

They overlook that hydro, biomass, solar thermal, and geothermal are not as variable as are wind and solar PV. They overlook that Brazil, Norway and New Zealand are about at a 100 percent renewable power supply, and that Denmark, Sweden and others are as of now moving in that course. They overlook that with more extensive grid coverage and solid interconnections, power can be moved about effectively, and they overlook the development of home owners and organizations moving progressively towards independence, basically through the utilization of solar PV and other little scale innovations whose expenses have descended drastically lately. With sufficient stockpiling (pumped, compressed air, batteries, fuel cells), sufficient dispatchable renewables, and energy efficiency, energy conservation, grids and demand management systems, it is absolutely attainable to power our economy totally on renewable enery, as different reenactments in distinctive parts of the world have indicated. Further, in the spots with vast RE penetration, for example, Denmark, you see a much more prominent part for power in the general energy framework for transport as well as for warming also. The truth of the matter is, a 100 percent renewable energy future is in fact plausible, and at low or no expense to GDP, particularly when you consider the fuel investment funds included for most economies AND the fundamental evacuation of the $650 billion/year or somewhere close with subsidies to fossil fuel generation and utilization. The question is whether it is politically practical. Industry Leaders Magazine [march 2015]

We truly do just have an exceptionally restricted time to act before climate change moves from terrible to calamitous, taking choices out of the hands of governments and place first in the hands of the emergency services, and at last, the military. The higher capital expenses of putting resources into a renewable future now will be more than paid again by fuel reserve funds down the line, also the various reserve funds from diminished consumption on refugee camps, embankments and putting out fires. The question is not whether we can manage the cost of it. We unmistakably can’t manage the cost of not doing t, furthermore we don’t have much time. Individuals don’t put resources into an industry to save the world or promote a certain cause; they contribute on the grounds that they accept the sum they put in will eventually be come back to them as a much more noteworthy total. We’ve got to burn through cash to profit and, regarding the matter of clean energy, there is a ton of cash to be made. Here are a few reasons clean energy investment will continue with its positive in the coming years.

Clean energy investment has been and continues to rise Lately buzz around clean energy investment has dramatically climbed. According to industry reports detailing the global clean energy industry’s solid 2014 investment results, investments beat expectations. While 2004-2014 saw an extended recession and high unemployment for the economy worldwide, clean energy investment grew five-fold amid those 10 years, up from $60.2 billion in 2004 to an amazing $310 billion in 2014, as per BNEF. An intermediary for this positive trend has likewise been the consistent development of U.S. funding interest in cleantech, up from $893 million (3.8 percent of total U.S. venture investment) in 2004 to $4.367 billion (14.9 percent of total U.S. venture investment) in 2013, as indicated by Clean Edge Inc. With a solid start in to 2015, these trends will continue for years to come. Let’s take a look at the transactions that have effectively occurred in the first weeks of this current year: $250 million interest in U.S. residential solar by Morgan Stanley $350 million agreement between JP Morgan and SolarCity $195 million arrangement between Investec and SunRun Over $1.5 billion in investment by Google in different renewable energy ventures For further backing of this trend, Deutsche Bank, among others, is bullish on solar investment’s 2015 prospects. Wind and solar energy costs keep on dropping abruptly As indicated by Lazard, the levelized expense of energy(LCOE) for solar and wind energy have diminished 78 percent and 58 percent, respectively, since 2009. It goes without saying that is ginormous. Likewise, as indicated by BNEF, expenses of solar PV modules have fallen in accordance with an experience curve subsequent to 1976, i.e. costs have declined by 24.2% with each multiplying of combined limit, and there are no indications of this pattern losing steam. Clean energy interest in developing nations is growing explosively, and it just getting started As expenses drop, renewables guarantee to catch and get to be considerably more alluring in the developing nations. In 2014, development in clean energy venture was most prominent in a little example of developing nations that hold a percentage of the world’s biggest populaces, in particular Brazil, China, and India, where development was 88 percent, 32 percent, and 14 percent separately. India got a vote of backing from President Obama when he resolved to help fund India’s yearning objective to increase solar capacity by 33 times – an objective which will require $100 billion in worldwide investments through the following seven years. Among the numerous reasons clean energy assets are perfect for creating countries are: Many of these nations need infrastructures for vast, conventional power plants; and, distribution generation (like rooftop solar) requires far less infrastructure; Many developing nations are at sunny, equatorial latitudes, which are perfect for solar power; and Industry Leaders Magazine [march 2015]

The Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed Clean Power Plan – which could constrain carbon emissions from existing force plants surprisingly – is an alternate guaranteeing strategy progression for clean energy. To meet these new prerequisites, utilities will need to progressively turn to clean energy tools like renewables and vitality effectiveness, further driving demand and development in these areas. For instance, Germany is experiencing a noteworthy energy change far from centralized, fossil-fueled power, and shows a nation that is proactively seeking after renewables integration can encounter monetary profits. On top of improved grid dependability, Germany has additionally seen enhanced employment and macroeconomic conditions. Denmark which as of late is seen as the most obvious nation for business is proactively transitioning to a power sector ruled by clean energy; wind generation now gives around 30 percent of the country’s power. As more nations increase clean energy while keeping up solid economies, clean energy investment should grow. The Blogger Who Turned into a Millionaire

Industry Leaders Magazine [march 2015]

075

Welcome to Ashley Qualls’s life, a blogger who turned into a millionaire in what seems like an overnight. This young millionaire who is the head of whateverlife.com was only 14 when she decided to expand her online base into a website that is worth millions today. Ashley Qualls was born on 4th June 1990 in Detroit, Michigan and lived with her mother Linda LaBreque and younger sister, Shelby in a one bedroom apartment. The twist in the story? Ashley was just 14 when she launched whateverlife.com to pursue her hobby of portraying graphic designs and pictures and later even gave out free HTML tutorials and Myspace layouts on her website to people of her age who wished to learn graphic designing. All the revenue came from various advertisers, one of them being the American telecom company, Verizon Communications.

076

Ashley had the idea of sharing interesting and fun things instilled into her ever since the beginning of this entrepreneurial journey. Whateverlife.com has an outright meaning attached to it – for whatever life you lead and claims to take great strides in fulfilling the idea. Nearly 7 million individual visitors, with 60 million page views, frequented this website on a monthly basis at a time when Qualls was just 17. This audience is larger than Seventeen, Teen Vogue, and Cosmo Girl’s visitors put together. At the same age she even sought to obtain emancipation and gained the status of an adult which freed her from laws pertaining to minors. To this Ashley Qualls even responded by saying on her MySpace.com page: “I have lived a lot in the past three years and have only a few things to say about it. There is always so much to learn.”

Ashley Qualls provides full proof of ingenuity being ageless and is a living evidence of the meritocracy on the internet. Despite being approached by buyers at the age of 17, who went out of their way to flatter her with a $1.5 million offer for her young company and a car of her choice, she chose to refute it by claiming she did have a license yet. Funny isn’t it? The only way Ashley’s websites gains any revenue is from the advertisers, who prove to be the very significant source of her website’s funding. Her Myspace layouts are freely available for the taking.

Ashley worked with the simple idea of allowing girls to have what they would really want to have on their Myspace profiles- a way to personalize their Myspace pages. Her website worked by letting girls cut and paste HTML codes of beautiful layouts of hearts, celebrities, stars , flowers, etc. from whateverlife.com onto their personal pages. This allowed followers to customize themselves with new looks on their Myspace pages every day. It is funny how the idea of naming the website ‘whatever life’ came about. It was almost in a moment of frenzy after losing in a video game , when Qualls shouted out “Whatever Life” and thought that would be a great name for her website because she wanted to live like there is no tomorrow.

In September 2006 she purchased a two-story, four-bedroom house located in a fenced-off subdivision in the community of Southgate for $250,000, paid in cash. She currently works in the basement of this house. This beautiful office is designed entirely in pink, reflecting a teenager’s idea of a workplace. One fine day Ashley’s lawyer arranged her meeting with the former COO of ePrize, Robb Lippitt. Thereafter, he became Qualls’s mentor and funnily her $200-an-hour consultant. He was aware about the fact that Ashley was running her business like a piggy bank but never failed to notice her sharp instincts.

080

Industry Leaders Magazine [march 2015]

Ashley did not want whateverlife.com to stay dependent as a tools site for just Myspace.com so she started creating new designs compatible with other websites and even phone displays and wall papers. This propelled her further into the multifaceted online career. Ashley is the living proof that you do not need a rich daddy to dream big and become something for she had absolutely no contacts , no wealthy unless or aunts, or cousins sitting in the Silicon Valley , cashing in on millions of dollars. She still recalls the days when she had to overhear arguments about unpaid bills. Ashley used to be na誰ve and trusted people beyond limits which lead her into buying her brother a used car; the same brother who later filed (then withdrew) a petition to become her conservator.

Ashley today claims that this journey as an internet entrepreneur has taught her not trust easily, be bold and be careful. Apart from employing her mother, who never even attended college, she employs several young people from around the world.

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development in collaboration with IRENA during the summit provided $57 million in soft loans to finance renewable energy projects in Argentina, Iran, Cuba, Mauritania and the Saint Vincent and Grenadines islands, to join a first group of countries that previously received such loans, including Ecuador, the Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, the Samoa Islands and Sierra Leone. “Projects funded by the agency and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development are selected based on specific criteria,” Amin said. “They must be creative, unique, reproducible and replicable in other areas, and of course, they must align with the development strategies and priorities of the governments in the countries where the projects are to be implemented.” Researchers are currently studying and evaluating the advantages and socio-economic effects of these projects, he said, adding, “The aim of these projects is to contribute to the development of sustainable energy sources and to enhance energy security.”

International Marketing Gone Wild! Access to mobile phones and mobile phone technologies among the poorest populations are transforming how business is done, allowing vast marginal populations a chance to acquire wealth and opening up new opportunities for global business visionaries. Remember when BRIC was all the rage? Every marketing expert was touting these four powerhouses-Brazil, Russia, India, and China. This was the future; the pot of gold at the end of the overseas rainbow where millions, even billions of new customers were itching to get their paws on the developed world’s products and services. Where are we today? •

Brazil is fast heading down the disastrous road to economic oblivion and is looking more and more like Venezuela every day. Russian corruption and lack of economic cohesion has been made much worse by increased Western economic sanctions. The Russian economy was seriously ill before the sanctions, with only the continued infusion of the lifeblood of high oil prices keeping it off life support. Now, with oil at $50 a barrel, what will happen? India remains India even with the election of a pro-business Prime Minister. India, as always, is a model of controlled chaos yet it is a functioning democracy with enormous potential. But its legacy of redtape, restrictions, tariffs and inefficient business practices makes it difficult for international marketers to thrive. China, with its economic engine fueled by supplying low cost merchandise to the world sputtering, has seen its economy contract as its factories churning out this stuff have been silenced as the worlds’ markets have contracted. Economic woes just add strain to its broken political system.

Industry Leaders Magazine [march 2015]

With its authoritarian regime wobbling on the ancient legs of its leaders, China is poised for dramatic change. Eventually, this will lead to vast opportunity. But when? So, even without a quantum shift in communication technologies, it was time to look further afield for other markets. In the days of BRIC, it was still the traditional global marketing model used where “prospects” had to be upwardly mobile, middle class with bank accounts, credit cards, credit worthiness and of course, disposable income. Socio-economic level (SEL) was king. So of course that limited the reservoir of new customers. The game-changer now is the rapid adoption of mobile phones not only among the upwardly mobile but especially among the “have-nots.” With pre-paid plans, many impoverished people who once fell below the radar of the direct marketers are now accessible, communicating and becoming entrepreneurial which in itself, will raise their incomes. So savvy marketers that understand how phones are being used can tap into heretofore untappable markets. The limits will be set only by their amount of imagination and creativity. In Africa, once ignored by marketers and with good reason, start-ups like M-pesa which allow money transfers, bill payments and consumer purchases, even school tuition payments, has blossomed into a $21 billion industry. More importantly its model of empowering the impoverished has inspired 200 startups around the world. Kopo-Kopo founded by Americans, allows small retailersthe lifeblood of most emerging economies-to accept digital payments. M-Kopa is allowing poor rural villagers to switch from kerosene lamps to electric lights by making regular payments of a few pennies a day and even save money in the bargain. Money that can now be spent on other things. Can’t this model be adapted for other goods and services? 65% of households in Sub-Saharan African had at least one mobile phone in 2013 so this extends well beyond the traditional middle class target group. Easypaisa in Pakistan moves $3.5 billion in payment transfers and transactions annually. bKash in Bangladesh moves $4 billion after being in business only 2 years. India, as usual, is proceeding more slowly but the growth potential is exponentially greater. Mobile transactions over the next year could skyrocket to $350 billion. Moneyon Mobile in India predicts that within 3-5 years 30% of India’s payment transactions will be online.

So what does all this mean? And how does one not in the mobile app business benefit? Improved communications lead to less isolation, more savings and countless small entrepreneurial business opportunities. This allows wealth to develop among even impoverished populations. Even savings of pennies a day spread over massive consumer bases can create vast amounts of wealth overall. Company visionaries that can see these opportunities in underdeveloped world regions and create a service or product may harvest huge rewards. Those businesses needing more traditional marketing methods can also take advantage of large population groups that now are accumulating disposable income. Global databases are appearing now that reach well beyond the usual suspects of upper middle class credit card holders who speak fluent English. Mobile phone numbers and email addresses are being captured so the contact channels are expanding. The ever-important forums and idea-exchanges for global marketers disappeared for awhile which was a loss for everyone. But it is making a comeback now, largely through the presence of a few international conferences centering upon the new technologies like the recent TFM&A Conference in London and the expanded presence of organizations like the Global Marketing Alliance which offers annual industry summits and valuable networking opportunities among its 24,000 members in 75 countries. www.the-gma.com.
