China, tempted by Husab, makes £756m offer for Kalahari China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group Co., a Chinese state-owned nuclear power company, interested in acquiring a stake in one of the world’s largest uranium projects, has made a £756m offer for a takeover of Kalahari Minerals Plc. With oil prices surging, China has been scrambling to secure alternative, and increasingly scarce, sources of energy. Husab, the world’s fifth-largest known primary uranium deposit in Namibia, is owned by Australian Explorer Extract Resources. With Kalahari owning 43% of Extract, taking over Kalahari would mean acquiring a stake in Husab – a very

tempting deal for a number of major powers looking at investing in alternative energy. China Guangdong’s offer for Kalahari is 17% above the average price of the target’s shares in the 20 trading days before the announcement. If completed, the move would constitute one of the largest investments made by China in a London- company and the latest of a series of deals in which Chinese groups have acquired strategic mineral concessions in Africa.

ipad2: worth the month-long wait? TAB-so-lutely. The iPad 2, one-third thinner, 15% lighter than and twice as fast as the original iPad, was launched earlier this month in America. Reports say that over a million of the iPad2s were sold over the debut weekend, triggering off a month-long wait for those who couldnt get a piece straightway. Available in 18 flavors, iPad2 users will be able to choose from sizes of 16, 32 and 64 GB, between WiFi-only and 3G-connected models using Verizon or AT&T, and also between black and white.

The bigger screen offered by the 9.7inch iPad 2 is much easier to hold than its predecessor, thanks to tapered sides, thinner design, and lighter weight (the original iPad tipped the scales at 1.5 pounds, while iPad2 is significantly lighter at 1.3 pounds). The Motorola Xoom, at 1.6 pounds, looks obese in comparison. We also LOVE the smart covers that make the pad experience that much more colourful.

Steel luxury for “green” roads A fantastic mix of compact luxury and fuel economy seems to be making its way into the auto motive market, with the Lexus CT 200h, the Infiniti M hybrid (M35H) and Green Automotive’s Zotye SUV all coming out around the same time. The CT 200h, Lexus’s first compact luxury hybrid carwith a base price of $30,000 and an estimated promised fuel efficiency of 42 miles per gallon, is a hatchback-style with an electric motor drive. The Infiniti M35H on the other hand, flagged off on March 16, 2011, is priced much higher at $53,700 and promises to deliver a fuel efficiency of 32 mpg. Clearly, what these luxury car makers seem to have in mind is creating environmentally responsible consumers, without stressing their budget for fuel.

Banana Peels make Excellent Water Purifying System Finally, the peel gets acknowledged instead of being tossed aside! Gustavo Castro and his colleagues from Instituto de Biociencias de Botucatu, Brazil, have developed a water purification system based on banana peels, with no other complex filters or other electronics involved. The researchers have found that minced banana peel could quickly remove lead and copper from river water as well as, or better than, many other materials.

To add to the surprisingly inventive uses for banana peels – which include polishing silverware, leather shoes, and the leaves of house plants – purification of drinking water contaminated with potentially toxic metals is the latest on the list. The report identifying minced banana peel as a better performer than an array of other purification materials appears in ACS’s journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research.

The future of Cybertecture James Law’s intention while designing the Cybertecture Egg, was to bring together iconic architecture, environmental design, intelligent control systems, and evolutionary engineering towards creating this innovative building for the city of Mumbai and for India in the 21st Century. Why integrate these specific features you ask?

This enlightment gives rise to a new form of architecture – Cybertecture.”
The WOW
According to James Law, the Cybertecture Egg has been conceptualized and designed as a sustainable ecosystem derived from the concept of “Cybertecture”. Through its design itself, the building aspires to give its inhabitants both a dynamic physical world as well as access to virtual spaces of the connected world. Located in Mumbai’s new commercial business district, the Bandra Kurla Complex, the Cybertecture Egg, imagined as a microcosm of the earth, has been envisioned as a beacon and nucleus for this high profile business area.

An intelligent, interactive building While all the above characteristics are great to have in a building, it is these interactive-intelligent features that really set the Cybertecture Egg apart from all the other avante-garde construction projects coming up in India. While the Cybertecture Egg’s intelligence systems work in tandem with the building’s design to give the inhabitants the ‘best space to work in’, there is also a comprehensive series of systems throughout the building, such as the ‘cybertecture health’ in the washrooms, that monitor the health of the inhabitants. Designed to keep track of the inhabitants’ health including their blood pressure and weight, these innovative systems allow the collected data to be retrieved and also provide for this to be sent to a doctor if required. As if this isnt impressive enough, the Cybertecture Egg also allows the building’s inhabitants to “customize” their reality through the use of ‘cybertecture reality’ ; this allows a customization of one’s favorite view. So you could choose to have real time scenery all around your working world if you wanted! This is the brand new, intelligent, green, interactive, virtual India coming your way.

AT&T’s $39bn takeover of AT&T’s
$39 billion blockbuster takeover of T-Mobile marks the biggest global telecom deal since AT&T’s $89.4 billion buy of BellSouth in 2006. The latest among a series of transformational deals for Morgan Stanley‘s telecom bankers, the AT&T / T-Mobile deal will mean a whooping $145 million fee for the advisors. The deal came through after a formidable 15-member team, led by Adam Shepard, head of North American Telecom for Morgan Stanley, Jim Murray, head of Wireless Banking and Bob Eatroff, technology veteran, spent an entire year guiding Deutsche Telekom AG through a series of options for their T-Mobile USA unit, the other options under consideration being an IPO and a deal with Sprint.
Year's Biggest M&A Deal AT&T’s takeover of T-Mobile deal for $39billion figures as the largest pure M&A transaction this year, second only to the $49billion worth of preferred shares conversion into common stock by the U.S. Treasury while restructuring took place for American International Group Inc. The latest among a series of telecomrelated m&a deals carried out by Morgan Stanley – Morgan Stanley having been Verizon Wireless’s sole adviser on its $28 billion takeover of Alltel in 2008, and also Clearwire’s adviser on its $15 billion joint venture with Sprint in 2008, this mega deal cements Morgan Stanley’s lead in the league table rankings of investment bankers. of this magnitude would be approximately 0.15% to 0.17% of the deal’s value for M&A advisers on the side that is buying, while being slightly lower at 0.14% to 0.16% for advisors on the selling-side. So what exactly does the AT&T – T-Mobile deal mean in terms of numbers for advisors on both sides ?
Goldman Sachs, which was advising Sprint, missed out on the year’s largest M&A deal, and while it retains its no. 4 spot in the worldwide league tables, it did miss out on some very meaty advisory fees.
Estimates by Freeman & Co, a consultancy firm value total fees paid to AT&T’s advising banks, JPMorgan and two boutique firms, Greenhill and Evercore, at around $55 million to $65 million, to be split between the three.

Stanley, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank, are likely to receive a total fee amounting to $50 million to $60 million. Along with these hefty paychecks, being in on this mega-deal has also meant jumps in share values and higher ranks in the worldwide league tables for the involved banks. Shares of boutique investment firms Evercore Partners Inc and Greenhill, which advised AT&T on the deal, jumped on Monday in anticipation of the lump sum fees.
While the deal reinforces Morgan Stanley’s lead position, JPMorgan Chase & Co – involved on AT&T’s side – jumped up from no. 3 to no. 2, trading places with Bank of America Corp for the better. Further, while Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank rose in the tables to No. 5 and No. 8 respectively, the sharpest rise was for Greenhill & Co, which was previously not even in the top 25, and after this deal figures at No. 13. Evercore Partners rose three places to No. 7.

growth, labour mobility and demands for higher standards of living are widely recognized common factors across the world’s major developing countries, all of them reinforcing the need for more construction and better infrastructure in these emerging economies. India, Asia's third-largest economy, and a heavyweight brick in the BRIC, expects to invest about $500 billion in infrastructure, mainly in power, telecommunication, roads, railways and oil pipelines, in the five years ending March 2012, according to reports released by the Indian Government’s Planning Commission.

Why Infrastructure? The Overhaul Ahead The United Nations (UN) estimates that over the next 15 years, each week 1 million people will migrate to cities in the world’s emerging economies. While these developing countries try to grapple with the pressures exerted by breakneck urbanization on their existing infrastructure, they find themselves in a race against time to build up their infrastructure, and hence achieve savings from reduced costs and faster production cycles.
India’s estimated investment of $1.5 trillion on infrastructure in the years leading up to 2017 to overhaul its creaking road, railway and power sectors – long recognized since as a liability for the country’s comprehensive growth – is a clear indication of the scale of infrastructure-related investment that should be expected from Asia's thirdlargest economy.

GIFT City The most futuristic-looking development under-construction in India, the 500 acre Gujarat International Finance Tech-City, also known as the GIFT City is being built in the state of Gujarat.
comprises the Gujarat Urban Development Company Limited (GUDCOL) - a body of the State Government of Gujarat - and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS).
Very obviously inspired in form by the spate of financial hubs coming up in China, the GIFT City is being developed with the primary purpose of attracting finance and tech firms from across the country.
With plans to construct a total floor space of 85,000,000 sq ft (7,900,000 m2),
The means to this end? The provision of high quality physical infrastructure (electricity, water, gas, district cooling, roads, telecoms and broadband), so tempting that the biggest finance and tech firms from Mumbai, Bangalore, Gurgaon etc. where infrastructure is either very bad or very expensive, relocate their offices to GIFT City. The masterplan for the GIF City development will boast a special economic zone (SEZ), international education zone, integrated townships, an entertainment zone, hotels, a convention center, an international techno park, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) units, shopping malls, stock exchanges and service units. The city will be developed and implemented by a joint-venture company called the "Gujarat International Finance TecCity Company Limited" (GIFTCL), which www.industryleadersmagazine.com

the colossal damage magnified by stored spent fuel rods at Fukushima Nuclear Station
Fuel to Fire Japan’s government has estimated the cost of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the nation's northeast at around $309 billion, making this the world’s costliest natural disaster on record. The extensive damage to housing, roads, utilities and businesses across the seven states of Japan has resulted in losses of between 16 trillion yen ($198 billion) and 25 trillion yen ($309 billion), according to a Cabinet Office estimate Wednesday. And magnifying the magnitude of this damage manifold is the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant. Fukushima Nuclear Station

The latest among the "consequences" of the leaks in the nuclear reactors is the discovery by Japan's Nuclear Safety Agency that water near the Fukushima Daiichi plant's reactor 1 contains radioactive iodine at 3,355 times the legal limit.
And despite the eight-day half-life of iodine 131 implying that a large amount of the iodine will have deteriorated by the time the water reaches people, just the fact that Iodine 131 was held responsible for the high incidence of thyroid cancer among children exposed to fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, is enough to have people getting frantically worried about what the consequences this time might be in real terms This story

How do Nuclear Reactors Work? with the reactors at Fukushima? Well, apparently, the havoc wrecked by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear reactors, while obviously having been caused by the over-heating of the fuel rods in the reactors due to water leaks, is also being attributed to a very large extent to the non-disposal of spent radioactive fuel rods, and the practice of storing these at the site of the nuclear plant itself.
www.industryleadersmagazine.com
In very simple terms, a nuclear reactor uses radioactive fuel rods made of zirconium and pellets of nuclear fuel such as uranium, which react with water contained in the core of the reactor to set off a controlled nuclear reaction. The water in the reactor gets heated as a result of the above reaction, creating 550-degree Fahrenheit steam, which powers a turbine, generating electricity.

In lieu of the danger this could pose during a possible calamity, many countries have taken measures to minimize the accumulation of spent fuel rods at nuclear power plants. For example, the western province of Gansu has a storage compound where spent rods from all over China are sent. In another example, Germany collects and stores these in costly supertough casks.
Tokyo Electric Power released figures around mid-march which indicate that it is the spent fuel rods that contain most of the dangerous uranium at the power plant, not the reactor cores themselves, adding that a total of 11,125 spent fuel rod assemblies were stored at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, which amounts to about four times as much radioactive material as the reactor cores combined.

Unfortunately for Japan, the indecisiveness in disposing off these spent rods, instead collecting them in temporary storage pools at the power plants, where they can be guarded with the same security provided for the plants themselves, has magnified the damage caused by the reactors manifold and is going to haunt Japanese authorities for a very long time to come.

The temporary storage pools at the Fukushima site are now literally acting as the proverbial “fuel to fire, with stored water in the pools having either boiled away or having leaked out of the assigned containments. And while spent rods are ordinarily not capable of generating as much heat as new ones do, reports have started coming in about some spent rods

The worst-case scenario is a full meltdown, in which radioactive material eats through the various protective barriers and reaches the outside. ast month, we looked at the most expensive cars in the world.
A really awesome Yacht, you say? We concur.
So you’ve got that fantabulous house with acres of backyard, an awesome Lamborghini sitting in your driveway, gadgets galore, what do you aspire for next?
Like a popular ad goes, “Free man, You will always love the Sea”.

Luxury yachts have since time immemorial had this incredibly high “I’ve arrived” quotient. www.industryleadersmagazine.com
Larger than Life
So we asked our magic mirror, “which yachts are the most luxurious of them all?” Here goes a list of the 5 hottest machines that make the most of the ocean’s magic. Revealed to the world on June 12th, 2009, the Eclipse is proudly owned by Romah Abramovich, a Russian businessman, the primary owner of the investment company Millhouse LLC, owner of the Chelsea Football Club, and according to the 2011 Forbes list, the 53rd richest person in the world worth a personal fortune of $13.4 billion.

1. The
Eclipse
As if that’s not good enough, the Eclipse is also reported as being equipped with an “anti-paparazzi” shield.
Price: $1.2billion
As for his awesome set of sails, the Eclipse, at 528 feet (164 metres), is the world’s largest. What else does the Eclipse offer ? You name it, they’ve got it. From hot tubbing to helicopter pads (of which the Eclipse has 2), from a disco hall to swimming pools (again, this luxury yacht has 2 of these), guest rooms (obviously) with 6-foot movie screens installed in each of these, 3 launch boats and even a mini submarine with a capability of submerging upto 50 meters. Built by the world’s best-known yacht builders, German company Blohm + Voss, and operated by 70 crew members, defense and security have been very carefully considered while designing this www.industryleadersmagazine.com
The yacht has a stream of lasers sweeping the surroundings and when they detect a CCD, they fire a bolt of light right at the camera to wipe out any photographs that might’ve been taken. And while these are believed to not be on all the time, they supposedly get activated when guards spot any paparazzi hanging around this highly ostentatious piece of machinery. April 2011

2 . Dubai Price: $350 million Nowhere close to the super awe-inspiring Eclipse, Dubai, is quite a feat in its own right. Owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai and the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, this luxury yacht is 524 ft and 10 inches (162 m) long. Formerly known as “Panhandle” and “Platinum”, this luxury yacht has also been built by Blohm + Voss, builders of the Eclipse.
to the right of Palm Island, the Dubai can be accessed by way of an exclusive navigational channel. With interiors designed by Philippe Starck, the Dubai is run by 88 crew members, can host 115 guests, and has a large pool, a squash court, a helipad and also a small aircraft hanger: after all, the Dubai’s owner DOES rule the Emirate of Dubai, doesn’t he?

3 . Lady Moura Price: $210 million
4 . Rising Sun Price: $200 million
This superyacht, owned by Saudi Arabian businessman Nasser al-Rashid, was also built by Blohm + Voss, in 1990, much before the Eclipse.
Originally purchased by Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corporation, and currently owned by David Geffen, the Rising Sun was designed by the late Jon Bannenberg and built by Germany’s Lürssen.
Smaller of course than the Eclipse and Dubai, Lady Moura is operated by 60 crew members, and as its special feature, boasts a mock of beachfront complete with sand and palm. I wouldn’t say no to that… As an added attraction, it also has a pool with retractable roof.
This 453 feet long luxury yacht boasts a total living space of 8 000 square meters, alongwith other modest (!) facilities like a huge indoor swimming pool, an extensive wine cellar, a cinema, a basketball court that doubles as a helicopter pad , suites for 16 guests, 82 rooms on five storeys and space for a private submarine

5 . Octopus Price: $200 million This mega yacht, featuring fifth on our list, is owned by Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft.
Built by the same guys who built the Rising Sun, Lürssen, the interiors for the Octopus were designed by Jonathan Quinn Barnett from Seattle.
With 40 eager-to-serve crew members, this 416 foot sailing beauty also doubles up as a “garage” of 7 smallers boats, two helicopters and a 10 person submarine.
