IRS Enforcement Eyes Millionaires for Tax Audit Earning more than $1 million a year? Get ready for a tax audit. The Internal Revenue Service reported Friday that workers and businesses underpaid an estimated 17 percent of their taxes that brings it to $385 billion for tax year 2006, in its latest report on the nation’s “tax gap”—an estimate of taxes owed but not paid. In the most recent year studied, the businesses also failed in returning the government a substantial $450 billion that it was owed. This means that the amount of taxes, which were underpaid, exceeds total federal budget deficit in a go.

12

IRS enforcement on income tax payers Industry leaders believe that the obedience among tax payers increases when employers report income information to the government and when they withhold taxes that are owed. The IRS has made efforts to improve compliance, such as increasing oversight of professional tax return preparers and increasing the information that must be reported to the agency by stock brokers, mutual fund companies and for some business transactions.

Heineken Beer to Use Dos Equis To Boost U. S. Sales Heineken beer was the first foreign brew to come to the United States after prohibition ended in 1933. Now, Heineken is looking to reclaim the top spot in the U.S beer market with an up-and-coming Mexican brand: Dos Equis. Sales of Dos Equis beer rose 17 percent for the quarter ending in October 2011, compared with Heineken’s 1-percent sales decline and industry wide declines of about 2 percent. Currently, Dos Equis represents just 0.6 percent of the U.S. beer market by volume, compared with Heineken beer’s 2.2 percent in 2011.

Will Dos Equis Be the One to Bring Back Heineken Beer? Even though the small Mexican has showcased impressive growth over the past year, Dos Equis might now be enough to pull Heineken back up. Heineken beer has been scaling back some distribution outlets in the United States after becoming “too ubiquitous” during the early 1990s. Although Heineken beer has slid less than a percentage point over the past five years, it’s valid to question whether or not Dos Equis will be enough.

U.S. Sanctions Against Chinese Oil Traders Over Iran U.S. imposed sanctions on China’s state-run Zhuhai Zhenrong Corp, along with two other firms, for trading refined oil products to Iran. This has definitely created a chaos among other oil traders in the industry. The move was part of a broadening international effort to target Iran’s energy sector and persuade Tehran to rein in its nuclear ambitions.

The sanctions announced today are important steps toward that goal, as they target the individual companies that help Iran evade these

efforts. The U.S. State Department believes that the sanctions against the three firms is an ‘important’ step to convince Iran to change its behavior, and highlights the potential connection between Iran’s revenues derived from its energy sector and the funding of its increase in sensitive nuclear activities. Zhuhai Zhenrong is said to be Iran’s largest supplier of refined oil products, brokering sales of gasoline worth more than $500m between July 2010 and January 2011. The sanctions are prone to have little or no immediate impact on Zhenrong because the company does very little, if any, business in the U.S.

Websites Blackout in Protest of SOPA, PIPA About a dozen websites including a couple of Business News website went dark Wednesday to protest a pair of controversial anti-piracy bills: he Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its Senate companion, the Protect IP Act (PIPA). The websites claim that the anti-piracy bills will burn down the Internet and stifle free speech.

The anti-piracy bills would directly affect libraries such as the Internet Archive, which collects, preserves, and offers access to cultural materials. The anti-piracy bills would encourage the development of blacklists to censor sites with little recourse or due process.

What’s happening?

Along with the Internet-based protests, several opponents are physically protesting outside of their congressional representatives’ offices. Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian said in Tuesday’s press conference it will “probably be the geekiest, most rational protest ever.

This is an extraordinary action for our community to take. We simply cannot ignore the fact that SOPA and PIPA endanger free speech both in the United States and abroad, and set a frightening precedent of Internet censorship for the world.

www.industryleadersmagazine.com

Do you like to perform a specific task towards accomplishing a larger goal or do you like to be in control of a situation? Do you prefer being told what to do or do you like to be responsible for a number of things? Are you a leader or a follower? In any given situation, it is essential to have

both leaders and followers to meet the task at hand. Without leaders, a team cannot function and have direction and vision. Without followers, there will be nobody to execute the decisions or actually get the task done. Leaders and followers are like night and day: they have different roles and different characteristics but neither can exist without

the other. For any organization or industry to prosper, there has to be a leader at the helm, guiding the team and there have to be followers who form the backbone of the ship. So which are you, a leader or a follower? Are you satisfied with your current role or do you wish to change? Do you want to leave behind the burden of leadership and become a follower? Do you want to set yourself apart from the crowd and wear the leader badge? Let’s take a look at some essential differences that distinguish leaders from followers.

Scope Of Responsibility To begin with, a follower is only responsible for getting his own task done. A follower has a limited, structured goal to achieve and his only responsibility is to make sure that the same is accomplished. A follower is one unit in the entire organization, accountable for a particular goal. A leader, however, is responsible for the organization at large, and not just one specific task. A leader is usually involved with managing other

people, each of whom has to meet a goal. A leader is responsible for all the other team members, their individual goals as well as the larger goals. A leader has to maximize others’ potential and strength to enhance the organization.

Do You Need Approval?

Others’

Leaders do not need anybody’s stamp of approval, followers cannot do without the same. A leader is characteristically comfortable in his own skin, and proud of himself. A leader is markedly confident, self-assured and has strong faith in himself. A follower needs somebody to tell them what to do, how to do it and whether or not they are doing it right. A leader might not always know what the best course of action is, but he is confident about taking chances and seeing it through.

Being Inspired v/s Inspiring Others A leader must be able to inspire the respect and confidence of other people. A leader has to be able to motivate other people to take action and do things a specific way to get goals accomplished. While a follower is only concerned with getting a task completed, a leader is responsible for making sure that it is done, and done the right way. For this, a leader has to have a motivating and inspirational personality. A good leader is one who is able to make people do things he or she wants done, without having to force them.

Being The First v/s Being The Rest A leader makes the first move, a follower… follows. A leader decides what has to be done, no matter how new or unpredictable or difficult a situation might be. It is often said that the leader is the one who makes sure that the show goes on, giving cues to the others, setting the stage and directing each scene. The followers turn to the leader for direction, for advice on which role to play when and how to function in a situation. A leader is marked by the decision, as well as the willingness, to jump headfirst into every situation and take charge.

”while followers ask ‘why don’t they do something about it?”

Waiting For Change v/s Changing Things

leaders say “here’s something I can do”.

In the leadership v/s followers paradigm, one of the most interesting, and oft-quoted phrases is that,

This little nugget sums up the difference between leaders and followers beautifully. Leaders are always excited about taking

control of a situation and they are typically the ones who have new ideas, offer solutions and come up with effective courses of action each time. Followers on the other hand use the leader’s solutions to affect the change, wait for directives and participate in the unfolding events.

Make Plans v/s Make Things Happen Possibly the biggest difference between leaders and followers can be understood in terms of action v/s planning. Followers are people who usually wait around for things to happen, wait for someone to suggest a change or force a change, plan to do something but don’t really accomplish it without a catalyst forcing them and so on. Leaders, however, don’t just plan and wish for things to happen but actually put their ideas in motion and act on them. Leaders

are characterized by their resolve to act on their ideas.

Choose To Lead, Or Follow Whether you’re happier being a leader or a follower, remember, it has to be out of your own choice. If someone thrusts the responsibility of leadership on you, you’re probably going to buckle under the pressure. Similarly, if you are limited to taking orders and following rigid structures when what you really want to do is share ideas and offer unique solutions and your own vision and insight, you are probably not going to be content being just another team leader for long. It is important to gauge your own personality and assess your performance style before you commit to being a leader, or a follower.

Cancun, Mexico, has a new tourist destination that combines sculptures and snorkeling. The story began in 2009, when a monumental underwater museum called MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) was formed in the waters, beneath the wise land surrounding Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc.

Cancun Underwater Experience The Cancun underwater museum was opened on November 26, 2009. Cancun underwater museum features around 400 life-sizes concrete sculptures. Wow! Isn’t it? Who wouldn’t want to experience a life underneath? I surely would want to see the relationship between modern art, the man and the environment. What a great piece of art would it be! It would truly be an experience in itself to submerge yourself in one of the most beautiful and clear water of the world, where the Cancun underwater museum is located. These crys-

tal clear waters surrounding Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc is now home to one of the largest underwater museums on the planet, located in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Forming the Cancun underwater museum is a series of underwater sculptural installations all sited within the protected National Marine Park, of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

Cancun Underwater Museum Project The project of Cancun underwater museum was founded by Jaime Gonzalez Cano of The National Marine Park, Roberto Diaz of The Cancun Nautical Association and Jason deCaires Taylor. The Cancun underwater museum consists of over 403 permanent life-size sculptures and is one of the largest and most ambitious underwater artificial art attractions in the world. These 400 life size sculptures in the depths range from 9 to 20 feet. The artist behind the Cancun underwater museum, Jason deCaires Taylor, offers a contemporary and cultural

that tourists visit the Cancun underwater museum with a tour guide.

The Cancun underwater museum is said to have a threefold purpose as stated by the officials. It is said to provide the visitors the opportunity to visit our pristine natural reefs while giving the opportunity to see the gorgeous sculptures. This way it will help in the conservation of the natural corals. The purpose of Cancun underwater museum is to also promote Cancun as a cultural and artistic developing area. The officials are also planning to continue the growth of the project, by inviting many other fine artists for many years to come. Even though the entry to the museum is free, it is recommended

The Cancun underwater museum comprises of 4 installations; La Jardinera de la Esperanza, Coleccionista de los Sueños, Hombre en Llamas and The Silent Evolution which are all created by Jason deCaires Taylor. The Silent Evolution is his most ambitious work to date, forming a vast gathering of people aiming to define a new era of living in a symbiotic relationship with nature. The goal of the Cancun underwater museum is to draw tourists away from the natural reefs that surround the sculptures, without losing the visitors who bring the area

millions of dollars every year.

Environment Friendly Sculptures in Cancun Underwater Museum The sculptures at the Cancun underwater museum are all designed to become artificial reefs and are created from special materials that promote marine life and form areas for corals to flourish and marine creatures to breed and take refuge, boosting the local ecosystem. It is believed that the appearance of the sculptures will change over time as the coral grows and marine life colonizes the structures. You cannot miss it. The sculptures are created with pH-neutral ma-

rine concrete and are based on members of the local community. The artist planned the sculptures as artificial reefs with fire coral planted in the initial sculptures. The sculptures are modeled after real people. It seems that the project has sparled great interest worldwide and will keep ongoing for years together. The total museum installation occupies over 1,600 sq. feet (150 sq. meters) and weighs over 120 tons, and will one day form an artificial ecosystem where various fish and marine mammals will thrive. I am sure, this aquatic exhibition, sharing a deep relationship between modern art, the man and the environment would leave you spellbound.

Top 5 Highest Paid Sportsmen in the World October 2011

www.industryleadersmagazine.com

- Christine Taylor

October 2011

www.industryleadersmagazine.com

Each time I see the amount sportsmen are getting paid every year, it makes me want to restart my life and dedicate myself to sports. I’m sure a lot of us feel the same way but since we cannot rewind our lives, we can at least gaze at the numbers and dream of spending it on things we love. Professional sports have become incredibly profitable and well-paid profession over a few hundred years of modern professional athletics. Business magazines state that popularity is increasing enthusiastically year after year and it makes one wonder ‘Who is the world’s highest paid sportsman?’ So, let’s take a quick look at the top 5 highest paid sportsmen in the world.

Highest Paid Sportsman #1: Manny Pacquiao Manny Pacquiao makes millions per fight and makes millions more through endorsements with Nike, McDonalds, and San Miguel Beer. He’s at number 1 on the list and sitting comfortably at $32 million. Manny Pacquiao acquires a position in the Time Magazine’s list of the World’s Most Influential People of 2009 for his boxing career and his influence over the Filipinos. Like that isn’t enough, one of popular business magazine claims that he is the number 1 ‘pound-for-pound boxer’ in the world and the ‘Fighter of the Decade’. Manny Pacquiao took over the boxing spotlight last year with victories in two blockbuster fights against Oscar De La Hoya in December and Ricky Hatton in March that together generated more than $100 million in pay-perview revenue in the U.S.

www.industryleadersmagazine.com

Highest Paid Sportsman #2: Alex Rodriguez In spite of the fact that Alex Rodriguez used steroids, he is still considered to be one of the best all-round baseball players of all time. No wonder he steals the first position on the list of highest paid baseball players in the world. Alex Rodriguez doesn’t earn much off the field these days but makes the cut, thanks to his historic $275 million contract he signed with the Yankees for 10 years after the 2007 season. The deal paid Alex Rodriguez $27 million last year and is worth $32 million this season. He also got $1 million in January as part of the $10 million signing bonus in the deal. Seems like he could’ve made millions more had it not been for theOctober steroid his reputation and www.industryleadersmagazine.com 2011that ruined made it virtually impossible for him to sign endorsement deals with the biggies.

Highest Paid Sportsman #3: Kimi Raikkonen Though Kimi Raikkonen finished at a disappointing third in the World Championship standing in 2009 after he won the title in 2007, he still remains Formula One´s highest-paid driver in the world. He is been paid $26.3 million in salary, annually. 2009 was a little tough year for Kimi Raikkonen who sat on 10th place in the standings. Not a good sign though, Ferrari resigned Raikkonen in September to a one-year contract extension keeping the Finn behind the wheel for Ferrari through 2010. Kimi Raikkonen made his Rally racing debut in January 2009 despite having a contract to race for Ferrari in 2010. On 29 November 2011, it was announced that RäikkÜnen will be returning to Formula 1 in 2012, signing a two-year contract with Lotus.

October 2011

www.industryleadersmagazine.com

Highest Paid Sportsman #4: Fernando Alonso If you don’t know of Fernando Alonso already, he’s a Spanish Formula One driver for Ferrari. It doesn’t end there. He’s young, rich, and he gets to drive ‘Ferrari’s’ all day. Dream job? I think so. He’s pulling in an estimated $22.8 million in salary alone from Ferrari. This brings him to number 4 on the list highest paid sportsmen and at second position on the list of highest paid drivers. It seems Fernando lost the number to Kimi Raikkonen. Fernando took his first podium of the season with third at the Turkish Grand Prix, having run second for a time and was only passed by Mark Webber on lap 51 of 58. He already extended his contract with Ferrari for a further four years, until the end of 2016, prior to his home race in Spain. Well, that sounds like more Ferrari driving for Fernando www.industryleadersmagazine.com October 2011 Alonso.2011 December www.industryleadersmagazine.com 39

Highest Paid Sportsman #5: Johan Santana Who hasn’t heard of Johan Santana? Well, though he’s not the highest paid baseball player in the world, his annual salary fetches him over $21.6 million. Johan Santana currently is in a six year contract of $137.5 million, with a full no-trade clause. This brings Johan Santana to number 5 on the list of highest paid sportsmen in the world. The contract includes a $25 million 2014 club option with a $5.5 million buyout.

Santana has been a two-time Cy Young Award winner with the Minnesota Twins and was also considered one of the best pitchers in baseball, with a pitch gamut that included an 88–94 mph fastball, generally considered his best pitch, and a slider. To mention something really personal of Santana, he warms-up on the song “Smooth” by Rob Thomas and Carlos Santana. That is definitely a catch. All being said and done, long standing in the spotlight will often place you higher on the list. These sportsmen have certainly placed themselves on the list of highest paid sportsmen in the world by work and cunning, utilizing both athletic prowess and utilization of marketing and public relations to capitalize. Magazine advertising also fetches sportsmen handsome dollars and endless popularity.

Samsung Pays US $934 Million as Sony Quits its LCD Joint Venture -Aubrey Chang

S

ony has been facing deep losses in televisions and is struggling to come out of it. In a move to reduce its huge losses, Sony has decided to sell of its entire stake in an LCD manufacturing joint venture with Samsung Electronics for US$934 million (1.08 trillion won). Both the companies signed a contract according to which Samsung, the world leader in flat-panel TVs, will turn the company, S-LCD, into a completely-owned subsidiary which will provide panels for Sony televisions. Samsung, the Korean-based LCD manufacturer, was established in April of 2004, with Sony holding merely below a 50 percent share. On the current deal, Keita Wakabayashi, an analyst at Mito Securities in Tokyo commented,

“For Sony, it is positive in terms of direction.” The exit from the joint venture with Samsung Electronic will allow Sony to switch to outsourcing options that are less expensive and allow it to bring around its struggling TV business again. Keita Wakabayashi also added, “But if they are making a loss on the sale, one could ask why they didn’t make this decision sooner.”

The Story So Far In November Sony, the world’s third largest flat panel TV maker, expected fourth

straight year of net losses in the current fiscal year through April. Sony was expecting remarkable losses with its TV unit alone set to lose $2.2 billion on tumbling demand and a surging yen. In a press release, Sony said, “This deal will allow Sony to acquire LCD panels from Samsung Electronics in a stable way based on market prices, without the responsibility or costs that come with operating a factory.” Sony said, “A further impairment loss of 66 billion yen, or $856 million, for the last three months of 2011is expected as a result of its break up from the Samsung joint venture.” Sony will slash costs in its LCD business by 50 billion yen a year. Sony also mentioned that it

“Aims to secure a flexible and steady supply of LCD panels from Samsung, based on market prices and without the responsibility and costs of operating a manufacturing facility.” Samsung Electronics, on the other hand, would not have any rein in producing its gen next displays with all its control over the

market from South Korean rivals Samsung and LG Electronics Inc, the largest and second-largest players, respectively.

Analysts’ Review

While Samsung is happy about the deal, analysts believe that it could really be difficult for Samsung to find another buyer for Sony’s stake. Samsung is expecting the flatpanel TV market to grow 10 percent in the coming year aiming to smash the market.

Sony has had a history of selling off its TV factories in Spain, Slovakia and Mexico in the past few years and outsources more than half of its production to companies including Hon Hai Precision Industry. Analysts forecasted a drop in the $100 billion LCD TV market by 3 to 4 percent. Global TV manufacturers are restructuring their businesses and outsourcing production as cut-throat competition and weak demand squeeze margins. Analysts have criticized Sony for not being able to snuff on the competition in the TV

The deals in the past stood as an acknowledgment for Samsung’s emergence as a universal player. It is now the consumer electronics king which is apparently passed over to Samsung from Song. Samsung also has plans to merge with Samsung LED on April 1, 2012.

For hours together, I scraped and scoured the internet, to find a list of young, rich and successful entrepreneurs who have made it big and big enough to be listed as top young entrepreneurs in today’s age. With original expert kids like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs making the way, a whole new generation of young entrepreneurs are putting their own spin on success and making a lot of money along the way. You sure might have heard of rich and successful people, but what makes it interesting is to learn about those who are not just rich and successful but ‘Young’ as well. How did they do it? While there might have been slightly different paths that they might have taken, these young millionaires all found a way to turn exclusive ideas into profitable ventures. Here’s a closer look to the list of a few young, rich and successful.

Mark Zuckerberg, 27, Facebook Co-Founder If you are not aware who Mark Zuckerberg is, you really must have been living under a rock. Mark Zuckerberg is an American entrepreneur and the co-founder of Facebook, the social networking behemoth. At 27, Zuckerberg is currently the CEO of Facebook. Hailing from White Plains, New York, Mark Zuckerberg began his programming at an early age back in middle school and it looks like that really paid off. The Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg didn’t intend for his page to go beyond Harvard, but he soon recognized the demand of being able to connect with college friends. He brought aboard his roommate Dustin Moskovitz and later classmates Eduardo Saverin and Chris Hughes, after they began enlarging Facebook to other universities like Dartmouth, Stanford, Yale and Columbia. Facebook took off, first with college kids then high school students, and in June 2006, many corporations were allowed to join. In September 2006, Facebook opened the floodgates to the general public. As of 2011, Mark Zuckerberg had an estimated $17.5 billion as personal wealth, making him the world’s youngest billionaire. www.industryleadersmagazine.com October 2011

Jack, a former Google engineer, they launched the site and it quickly became one of the most successful image sharing websites in the world. I found the site very useful in sharing and storing my pictures. So, it is wisely said,

‘Pictures may be worth a thousand words.’ But, a place readily reachable to store those photos anywhere anytime is worth even more. However Alexander was not alone in the creation of ImageShack and if it hadn’t have been for his older brother Jack, he might never have gotten the website onto the server! I must say, well done boys! Levin definitely has devised ways to be instantly rich.

Alexander Levin, 24, ImageShack Co-Founder Alexander Levin is one of the co-founders of the very popular image storing website ‘ImageShack’. Racking up a huge $56 million fortune along the way, Alexander has done very well indeed. Starting the website back in 2003 after coming up with the concept in high-school, it is now one of the largest images hosting websites in the world. Alexander Levin created the idea for ImageShack, an image sharing site, when he was 17. After sharing his ideas with his older brother February 2012

Blake Ross, 25, Software Developer with Mozilla Firefox Blake Ross is an American software developer, known best for his work with Mozilla Firefox. That’s right at the age of 25yrs he has been able to accumulate a total fortune worth $150 million. When Blake Ross was 15, he moved from Florida to California to take an internship with Netscape. This was a rather unrealistic thing for a 15-year-old to do, because Netscape was on life support at the time—its Web browser was getting the stuffing beat out of it by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Well, done little boy! Blake Ross is most well known for co-founding the Mozilla Firefox project with Hyatt. While interning at Netscape, Ross became disenchanted with February 2012

the browser he was working on and the direction given to it by America Online, which had recently purchased Netscape. Ross and Hyatt envisioned a smaller, easy-to-use browser that could have mass appeal, and Firefox was born from that idea. The open source project gained momentum and popularity, and in 2003 all of Mozilla’s resources were devoted to the Firefox and Thunderbird projects. Released in November 2004, when Ross was 19, Firefox quickly grabbed market share (primarily from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer), with 100 million downloads in less than a year. In 2005 he was nominated for the wired magazine’s top ‘Rave Award’ opposite some very popular names including Larry Page and Jon Stewart. Blake Ross also co-founded the company Parakey which was eventually bought out by Facebook.

Funnily enough his background is anything but technical, he went to a performing arts school, learned to play the Jazz Saxophone, and then he went on to created one of the best website and blog programs in the world. In 2005 he started the company Automatic, which became the backing force behind WordPress and Akismet. At the age of 26, Matthew Mullenweg has managed to become a young millionaire with wealth not less EUR 40 million (USD 400 billion). Well done Matt! It’s indeed a great job.

NASA’s Biofuel Project to Help Solve World Fuel Needs October 2011

www.industryleadersmagazine.com

October 2011

www.industryleadersmagazine.com

The interest for creating biofuels from algae and other sea-water plants have been increasing off late. Scientists at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland have been trying to fill the skies with algae and explore new means to create alternative energy source for commercial aviation. It seems like Bilal Bomani, a scientist at NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, has tied the future of space exploration to sub-aquatic life.

Salicornia – The Way to Go Green Together with experiments involving everything from clean coal to bacteria, there is a plant called Salicornia that is said to produce an oil, which can be refined into biodiesel. There are several advantages that come handy with the Salicornia. First, these plants are oil-rich and easy to grow; second, seabased nurseries leave land free for food production; and third, the process should take out more carbon from the atmosphere than what it puts in. Hence, Salicornia would be the best option that could be used to create alternative energy source for commercial aviation. Salicornia is also known as Pickleweed or Dwarf Saltwort. It’s flourishing far from the coast — in saltwater and sand tanks at NASA’s wind-turbine powered Green Lab near Cleveland-Hopkins airport.

Hopes from Algae Algae are one of the world’s most common aquatic plants. Studies have already shown it to have great potentials to create oils for the food industry as well as for various fuels; making it an excellent replacement for fossil fuels. Algae as both a food source and as a biofuel has been the subject of many projects

October 2011

www.industryleadersmagazine.com

all over the world; utilizing one of the earth’s most abundant plants that has been supplying much of our oxygen as well as food for marine life. Vegans get Omega 3 from algae sources. Bilal Bomani said,

“You know that hurricanes devastated Galveston, Texas. When we went to Galveston, Texas, there was nothing there. The oil fields were devastated, but we saw Salicornia all over the place! It can actually help with the coast line, because it has nice root structure, and Salicornia has very thick roots.” The Green Solution – Biofuel Scientist Bilal Bomani says that Salicornia is a green solution. In order for a product to be considered green, there are three metrics that need to be satisfied. One, is it sustainable? Bilal Bomani says, “Are you preserving what you’re doing for future use or for future generations”. Well, since unsustainable means eventual collapse, and this is in context to a global scale here, then sustainable means so there can be future generations. Two, is it alternative, and clearly this is alternative. Is it different in what’s being used today, or does it have a lower

October 2011

www.industryleadersmagazine.com

carbon footprint than what’s used conventionally. And three, is it renewable? Bilal Bomani future explains what exactly does renewable mean, saying,

“Does it come from earth’s natural repulsing system like sun, water and air”

the fertilizer comes from an unlikely source: freshwater mollies, which can be converted to saltwater in a matter of hours. Salicornias are cheap and they love to have babies. And that’s why scientists at the Glenn Research Center are planning to use them. And so, all we have to do is basically is seed one of the tanks outside with 50 mollies, and now each one has over 300. And that lab’s been in existence since 2009, November.

Bilal Bomani’s Work The main reason that the aviation industry has been target here for the use of biofuel or biodiesel is because, the field of aviation i uses more fuel than by every other, combined. Hence, there is a need to find an alternative. It is expected that this alternative would produce biofuel using domestic and safe ‘friendly’ resources. As we a quite aware that 97.5 percent of the earth water is saline. Why not use it? And the great news here is that entire process of producing biofuel works without precious resources such as fresh water or arable land. Even

Back in the tropical, strong greenhouse at NASA Glenn, Bilal Bomani tends his plants and works to accelerate that bio-fueled future. He knows there are skeptics, disbelievers who doubt that the jets circling overhead will come to depend on what he’s growing. There have been criticizers who are curious to know what goes on in the Glenn Research Center. Bilal Bomani says, his top most reason to work on this project is that he wants to help ‘save the world’.

Central Electricity Authority -Julia Zimmerman of Electricity Supply Act, 1948 was mainly responsible for the following:

Jaipal Singh, Director CEA

i) To develop a sound and uniform National Power Policy in relation to the control and utilization of national power resources; ii) To collect and record data concerning the generation, distribution and utilization of power and carry out studies relating to cost, efficiency, losses, benefits and such like matters; iii) To advise any State Government, Board, Generating Company or other agency engaged in the generation or supply of electricity on such matters as will enable them to operate and maintain the power system under its ownership or control in an improved manner; iv) To advise the Central Government on any matter on which its advice is sought or make recommendation to that Government on any matter if, in the opinion of the Authority, the recommendation would help in improving the generation, distribution and utilization of electricity.

Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is a Statutory Body constituted under the Electricity Act, 2003. The Act has been enacted by the Government of India, Ministry of Power. The Authority is associated with the Government of India, Ministry of Power as an attached office.

After enactment of the Electricity Act 2003, the constitution and functions of CEA have been redefined. Section 75 of the Act provides that in discharge of its functions, CEA shall be guided in the matters of policy involving public interest by directions made by the Central Government.

CEA started functioning as Central Water and Power Commission (CWPC) since 1951. Later, it was bifurcated into Central Water Commission (CWC) and Central Electricity Authority (CEA), and the latter became a full statutory body in 1975 under the provision of erstwhile Electricity Supply Act, 1948. CEA under the provisions

CEA mainly focuses on development of the power system in segments (sub-sectors) such as Generation, Transmission and Distribution besides advising and monitoring various stakeholders and utilities in the Power Sector.

Functions and duties of CEA are defined under Section 73 of the Act. However, its main functions are summarized as under: a. To advise the Central Government on the matters relating to the National Electricity Policy, and to formulate shortterm and perspective plans for the development of the electricity system and co-ordinate activities of the planning agencies. b. To promote and assist in timely completion of schemes and projects. c. To accord concurrence to new hydro-electric schemes involving a capital expenditure exceeding such sum as may be fixed by the Central Government from time to time. d. To advise the Central Government, State Governments, Licensees, Generating Companies and Regulatory Commissions. e. To collect and record Power Sector data. f. To make public information and provide for publications of reports and investigations. g. To specify technical standards for construction of electrical plants, electric lines and connectivity to the grid; the safety requirements for construction, operation and maintenance of electrical plants and electric lines; the Grid standards for operation and maintenance of transmission lines; the conditions for installation of meters for transmission and supply of electricity. h. To promote measures for advancing the skill of persons engaged in the electricity industry. i. To promote research on matters affecting the generation, transmission, distribution and trading of electricity. j. To carry out or arrange investigation for the purposes of generation or transmission or distribution of electricity. Further, Central Electricity Authority is entrusted with the preparation of the National Electricity Plan in accordance with the National Electricity Policy and notify such plan once in five years. February 2012

63

Under Indian constitution, electricity is placed under the concurrent list which means both the State Governments and the Central Government have certain obligation and responsibilities for the development of power system in India. In addition, Private sector participation particularly in generation segment is constantly growing in recent years. Various Power Sector reforms, up-gradation of technologies, massive rural electrification etc. are other significant developments. All this necessitate proper planning, balanced approach and sustained development efforts through effective supervision and control by regular monitoring and prompt advice. As an apex organization, CEA is the only statutory body in India of its kind whose functions and duties are mandated through a Parliamentary Act and which have adequate data, knowledge and experience in Power Sector to assist the Government and various stakeholder in technical matters. This makes CEA’s presence remarkable. CEA has faced a few major challenges by the Power sector in India :

October 2011

www.industryleadersmagazine.com www.industryleadersmagazine.com

(i) Historically, we have found it difficult to meet power capacity addition targets with variation as high as 50 percent in past. The situation has, however, considerably improved in the current 11th Plan through regular monitoring and other enabling measures. (ii) Coal is the mainstay of the power production in India and is expected to remain so in coming years. Supply constraints of domestic coal have led some public and private sector entities to embark upon imported coal to bridge the deficit. Ambitious generation targets in ensuing years may pose new challenges to deal with. (iii) Equipment shortages were significant reason for slippage in capacity addition targets in the past. While the shortage has been primarily in core components of boilers, turbines and generators, there has also been lack of adequate supply of Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment. This problem is being addressed by augmentation of domestic equipment manufacturing capability by establishing joint ventures between Indian and foreign suppliers and by procuring equipment from international markets. (iv) Some power plants and utilities face major constraints and delays regarding the availability of land and requisite environment and other clearances for the projects. (v) It is generally felt that availability of qualified technical manpower in Power sector is an issue and a greater focus is required on training and human resource development.

Apart from regular work of CEA, some major tasks and ongoing projects currently being overlooked by CEA are indicated as follows: • The National Electricity Plan is being prepared in accordance with the National Electricity Policy, an exercise done once in five years. • The 18th Electric Power Survey is underway in consultation with all stakeholders and utilities, which is another important exercise once in five years. • Reassessment of Hydro potential of the country in accordance with the latest techniques available and guidelines of the Minis-

I have been associated with CEA since January 2010 as Member (Economic & Commercial) and Ex-officio Additional Secretary to the Government of India. Jaipal Singh says, “As a civil servant, I have been associated with the Central Government in India for more than 28 years. The core areas of my domain knowledge and experience include finance, planning, budget and accounting besides adequate exposure in administration, human resource and information technology in the government and subordinate organizations in various assignments. Knowledge acquired and experience gained in the past have been useful in handling current job portfolio and associated challenges.”

try of Environment & Forests. • Concurrence to Hydro schemes in the country is regular and on-going activity. • Technical support to neighboring Governments of Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal for the development of Hydro potential. • Preparation of long term plan for Renovation & Modernization (R&M) and life extension of thermal units in the country. • Thermal Design & Engineering services for power projects in states. • Standard technical specifications for Sub-criti cal units for 500 MW have been prepared and specifications for Supercritical units under preparation.

• Consultancy to Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission for developing optimal long term sourcing plan for meeting the power requirements of Distribution companies of Delhi. • Vetting of transmission schemes of Power Grid Corporation of India costing more than Rs 10,000 Millions. • Consultancy services to Bhutan for Formulation of a Master Plan for developing National Transmission Grid of Bhutan. • Ongoing assistance and advice to Ministry of Power on technical matters related to distribution of power and implementation of Re-structured Accelerated Power Development and Reform Programme (R-APDRP) and Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyut Yojana (RGGVY) in the country. • Monitoring status of the implementation of National Electricity Policy and National Tariff Policy. Constantly growing energy requirements, ever changing technologies and private sector participation in recent years have thrown several challenges. Retirement and exodus of technical manpower is also a cause of concern. To meet these challenges, CEA needs to fine-tune its strategy for commensurate expansion and growth at organizational level so as to attract and maintain adequately qualified young engineers. CEA is constantly working to improve their service conditions, promotional avenues and training. The main assets of CEA contributing to its success are highly skilled, experienced and committed workforce in terms of technical manpower, and credible data bank on electricity acquired over the last several decades. The stakeholders and power utilities in the country look at CEA as an umbrella organization for its professional inputs and expert advice and CEA is making all efforts to meet their expectations.

sustainable value for our shareholders if our behavior, strategies and operations also create value for the communities where we operate, for our business partners and of course, for our consumers. Nestlé call this ‘creating shared value’. Paul Bulcke, Chief Executive Officer at Nestlé said, “We believe that all foods and beverages can be enjoyable and play an important role in a balanced and healthy diet and lifestyle.” Nestlé can trace its origins back to 1866, when the first European condensed milk factory was opened in Cham, Switzerland, by the AngloSwiss Condensed Milk Company. One year later, Henri Nestlé, a trained pharmacist,

launched one of the world’s first prepared infant cereals ‘Farine lactée’ in Vevey, Switzerland. The two companies merged in 1905 to become the Nestlé you know today, with headquarters still based in the Swiss town of Vevey. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe believes, “Our long term commitment is to enable people to make informed choices about their diets and lifestyles, helping them care for themselves and their families.” Nestlé’s nutrition, health and wellness strategy is based in three fundamental beliefs: Pleasure and health: We believe that nutrition must have great taste if it is to be enjoyed as part of a healthy balanced diet. People want their food to be both enjoyable and healthy, so if we are to win their preference our products must deliver in both taste and nutrition. This is challenging, and our team of highly qualified scientists and research experts has an objective to ensure our products across different categories not only taste better but also help people lead a healthier lifestyle. Most expensive gadget #1: The 201-carat-Chopard worth $25 Million They say “Time is Money”. I believe nothing explains this better than a 201-carat-Chopard watch-bracelet. It might be unbelievable, but yes, the 201-carat-Chopard is worth $25 million. It is the world’s most expensive watch ever made. And what makes it the world’s most expensive is the 201-carat of pure diamond. The main head of the watch is surrounded with three heart shaped diamonds which is the most unique feature with colors of blue weighing around 12 carats, while white weighing around 11 carats and pink weighing around 15 carats. The watch has an option of spring typed button which when pressed the three heart-shaped diamonds open like a flower petal. Then the three hearts- shaped diamonds are surrounded with pear-shaped white diamonds in form of a flower and in the middle of each a yellow colored diamond emerges. The total weight of the yellow and white diamonds is 163 carats, and thus the total weigh winds up at 201 carats.

This stone is sourced from Canada over 75 million years ago. But that’s not all. To make this masterpiece even more unique and one of a kind, sections of a 65 million year old T-REX Dinosaur’s thigh bone was splintered and then shaved into the Ammolite , then finished off with ultimate jewel , as single cut 8.5ct flawless diamond inlaid in its own platinum surround with 12 outer flawless diamonds.
